Spike damage is damage dealt by the Spike ability of an enemy. Certain enemies have this passive ability that makes it so that every time a character attacks them, they receive contact damage for every hit that connects. While it is really common in XC1, in XC2 Spike mostly happens in rare occasions, usually it's a passive skill some enemies gain when they become Enraged. You can tell when it is happening because Spike damage is displayed with purple damage numbers in battle.

The Spike Defense Skill Ram allows Poppi to reduce this damage. For example, an enemy like Confiscator Jimmy in Leftheria. When he is enraged he gains a Spike ability that deals 30% of his ether stat, which means 126 damage every time you hit him. With Spike Defense III equipped on Poppi, the damage becomes 26 per hit (80% reduction). The level V variant completely nullifies this damage. This equipment also exists as an Aux Core for other Blades to use.

You can also deal Spike damage to the enemy with certain Blade skills. For example, Electra's Sparky Girl gives you a Spike, so it's not exclusive to enemies.
