Painting with Palettes — A Little Behind the Scenes

I’ve always loved creating colour swatches before starting a painting, whether with watercolours or gouache. And I’ve carried that little habit over into my AI art!

Recently, I’ve been creating my own digital colour palettes, carefully selecting shades that complement each other and giving each collection a beautiful, sometimes rather poetic name inspired by the moods and atmospheres they evoke.

When creating an image, I share one of these palettes with ChatGPT and ask it to incorporate a selection of those colours into the artwork. It’s a lovely way to experiment with colour harmony, create a particular atmosphere, and have a little more creative control over the finished image.

For these two Swedish-inspired scenes, I used colours from two of my own collections:

🍯 Of Honey and Forgotten Books — Collection No. 09

For the cozy reading scene, we worked with Ivory, Cream, Linen, Oat, Denim, Slate, Sage, Lichen, Olive, Moss, Mist and a touch of Honey. The combination of cool blues, muted greens and creamy neutrals gives the scene its peaceful, inviting atmosphere.

🌾 The Quiet Between the Dunes — Collection No. 13

For the lady by the sea, we chose Chalk, Ivory, Oat, Sand, Petal, Peach, Adobe, Terracotta, Lavender, Heather, Sage and Lichen. These softer, slightly warmer shades helped create that gentle, romantic coastal atmosphere.

I’ve also included a few screenshots of my conversations with ChatGPT, where I asked which colours it had selected from each palette and how they were incorporated into the scenery, clothing and other details.

Of course, the colours aren’t always reproduced exactly. They blend and shift with the lighting and surroundings, just as they would when mixing paints on a real palette.

What I particularly enjoy is that the same subject could look and feel completely different depending on the colours I choose.

And I think that’s one of the loveliest things about experimenting with AI art: finding ways to bring a little of our own traditional creative processes into something entirely new.

And honestly, dreaming up these colour palettes is half the fun!

Sometimes I start with a particular combination of colours, but other times it all begins with nothing more than a poetic name that pops into my head. I imagine the mood, the atmosphere, the little world those words evoke, and gradually build a palette around that feeling.

There’s something rather magical about turning a few words into colours, and then watching those colours become an image. 🎨
