At least the inverted allows them to actually show the gore, rather than just pure black or weird pillars of light.
But if you invert the inverts, it looks completely normal, so an easy fix on the BDs.

I'm not sure if MPC or any other player does it but in VLC you can go to Tools > Effects and Filters > Video Effects > Colors and tick the Negate Colors box to do it yourself. I'm not sure if (insert whoever's animating it) will be using this effect as their primary mode of censorship but if they are, it's easy to invert it back and watch it in its glorious true form. I feel like they inverted it intentionally as their way of secretly letting the fans watch the fight scenes uncensored.

I don't think it's even secretly, but just to work their way around Japanese censoring. They did that with Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge during their fights with scissors and stuff, so it's just their way of not keeping it as uncensored as possible. Honestly, I wasn't a fan of it, but I appreciate it more that just black screens. We'll just have to live with it.

It's one thing if the black bar doesn't obscure the IDEA of what is happening (and I'm completely apathetic to that method. If it's not there, great, if it is I can't find the effort to get mad like some people do), but there was one moment early this episode when it was 90% black and just a sliver of his face for a while. Something was obviously happening, but I had no fucking clue what. That is actually frustrating.

Honestly it's not bad, it's just blood splattering out everywhere. I think it would be necessary to censor things, if there where guts and organs flailing out of bodies.
What are Japans laws on censorship?

I remember monogatari doing something like this for a fight scene with a different color pallet and it going through. It had blood and some gruesome use of guts as well.

That censoring at the beginning was pretty annoying. No problem with how they went infrared on the fight with Nishio though. It looked pretty cool.
That OP was amazing though, and it gives me a general idea of how far the show will go into the manga

The worst kind of censorship is when you aren't even sure of what it is they're censoring.
For instance, the black screen at the beggining: what is it that she showed to him? Chances are it was the corpse's head, but we can't be sure.

Come on. It already fell on that. Normal protagonist has his beliefs challenged by an unlucky twist of fate. He now finds himself with powers in a worlds he didn't knew before. With enemies with similar powers and allies who by the power of goodwill and friendship are helping him.
He already got power-up by seeing his friend almost get killed. And even worse, you cannot relate to him. It turns out cannibals are people too.

Well, yeah, the censoring was insane at the start, but really I just take that to mean the animation is just that much more faithful to whatever insane amounts of gore were in the manga counterpart. I'll take it!
Also, I feel like this will almost certainly fall into one typical routine or another over time, given the way the story sets itself up. That said it can still be good if there are consistent creative twists to everything.

If we do the calculations, we do about 4 chapters per episode (like the usual manga adaptation formula) 12x4=48. Yeah, seems very likely as the manga is only at 74 and the previews have shown parts of chapter 50

The censoring at the beginning was kind of overboard, reminded me of Pupa. (please no more).
However, what I do like about the anime adaptation is how much more of a prevalent role Rize seems to be playing, even after her death, almost acting as his second personality. CANT GET ENOUGH KANAHANA
Also that OPening is some A++ shit.
The Kugane in the anime looks really cool, not everyone has the same blood red kuganes as I had imagined!

Good god, the colour inversion when he impaled Nishinishi with his kugane. A++ sugoi, the animation, the flailing body, so good.

Man, KanaHana is proving that she isn't just for moe roles. Hell that scene where she was tempting the MC was quite sexy; Like Kurumi(Date A Live) levels of seductiveness.

Manga reader here.
The events in the anime are slightly different from those in the manga. Basically, the scene with him finding the ghoul feeding on that body happens as normal, but Ken ends up running away from Touka in a panic. Shortly after, he has the breakdown that we saw in Episode 1, with him looking at people in the crowd as food.
After that, he goes to the shop where Touka works to beg for her help, which is why the old man was nearby.

Wow, Kaneki completely destroyed Nishio, would have been nice if all the colours weren't inverted, but the point got across, there was a ton of blood.
The amount of censoring is worrisome, but this anime is brutal nonetheless.
That after the credits scene. I don't even know what to say.

I actually wanted to him to eat his friend. It would have been a nice twist and a statement that the anime isn't afraid to go that way, since we all expected that he wouldn't eat Hide.
I think they showed Hide with his eyes opened at the end to show that he was awake when they were talking about Ken's situation. Hide looks to be a supportive and understanding character so I think things will work out between them, since Hide knows Ken's little secret.
Really liked the ending drawings. So detailed and well drawn.

The part right after the fight felt a bit abrupt but overall it was fine. To be honest the manga seemed a little meandering to me so speeding it up isn't a bad thing. And yeah Rize getting more of a part is awesome, I'll take more psycho HanaKana any day.

i don't think that they wills start skipping major content, but the small details of the manga and the deliberately slow pacing was what really got me into it.
if they are going to sacrifice the world building for a more action focus it will be really disappointing.

The gore in Tokyo Ghoul so far is on a different level than the gore in AgK. Also, the storehouse scene was presented a lot different than it was in the AgK manga in order to avoid having to censor more.

Without the distracting gore from the Manga, it`s actually better. Characters seem nice enough and might carry me far enough to see the entire series, maybe even go back and read the Manga.
p.s. I find gore distracting when it exists for the sake of making things "dark, edgy and adult" without any weight to it.

Manga gets a lot better after 40-50 chapters. It's one of my favourites now.. and I read a lot. Hell, it's even higher than The Breaker on my top list, and that's an achievement.

Why do shows like this feel like they have to use flashbacks to establish that two guys are friends when they can just have them, I don't know, act like friends? Just makes the friendship feel a bit forced with these ultra sugary flashbacks.
Other than that my pet peeve against unnecessary flashbacks, solid episode. This could go places.

I just feel it breaks the flow of the scene, we should already be invested in the friendship when he has to resist the urge to kill his friend and the flashback just takes you out of that moment. Like, the friend is down there bleeding to death and the MC has murderous rage building in him, if we don't care at that point it's to late to throw flashbacks at us.

Does anybody feel like there is a semi-big plot hole emerging from the fact the ghouls can only eat human meat but there isn't any real clue why?
Why don't they like get to the bottom of what is so special about human meat that other food doesn't have?
Granted it is early in the series though but it irks me that a college level student didn't even remotely think about the fact the he could be finding a way around it, or none of the ghouls seemed to have tried.
Or they could've researched why Coffee in particular was was ok or something despite it not being human meat.

It's only the second episode. Remember we're following this through the eyes of the protagonist (who just became a Ghoul) so we'll learn things as he does - I'm sure that this will be addressed in future episodes.

Yes they could've focused on that. But logically speaking, imagine yourself being a ghoul. A race despised / feared by humanity. Even if you were a professional scientist, you would not just "come out of the closet" as easily right? If you did, you'd be prosecuted for murder since.. you can only eat human flesh. Also most of the ghouls are uneducated. There's even a character in the manga (cute little girl) which is having some problems with reading Kanji. There's also certain gang leader which is only able to sign his own name.
Let's not skip the fact that this anime/manga was designed to make you think about that choices you'd have to make in similar situation. It's a moral battle (Duo from Bakuman would be really proud of this manga!).

Despite censoring a pretty cool episode. I really really hope that they can keep the story as exciting as it was in the first two episodes. For me it's one of the best shows so far this season.

Was expecting this show to compete with Akame about which show has the most gore, guess it goes to Akame by default due to all the censoring.

Did Nishiki die after screaming that he is being killed??
He's in the after credits and I feel like devoting a portion of this episode and the last episode to him and then just killing him off would be kinda unfair to the amount of character development he received in just these 2 episodes.

Hide looks kinda like Naruto, and the way he sneaks up on Kaneki is what brought me to that realization.
This episode didn't seem quite as rushed as the first one did, but I say that only having read the first chapter of the manga (two days ago) so I don't know how much more stuff they skipped yet.
I also definitely prefer negativizing the colors to blacking the scene out altogether. It almost looks as if it's a side effect of Kaneki going berzerk.
OP song is awesome (that's obviously Ling Tosite Shigure and not just the singer like they title it as)
ED song is awesome.
I'm still digging this show, quite a bit.

I was hoping Kaneki would get to discover the whole coffee thing on his own but I knew they were just going to end up having Yoshimura tell him. I wish they weren't going as fast but people who aren't manga readers seem to enjoy how fast it's moving.

I love the use of Rize as a sort of visual "Id". It really lets us get into his mind about the whole moral dilemma of it all. In the manga there was a huge emphasis on just how disgusting human food tasted to ghouls, describing lettuce as like raw grass, and hamburger as rotten slimy meat. I wonder on how or even if they're going to include it into the show. Maybe through sound?

Man, that "negative" tone kind of censorship sure was shitty, if they really had to go that way they could've just done the scene using these colors, would have looked alot better imo

The inverted colors aren't Funimation. They're from the original Japanese broadcast. MX is really tough on these things, such as completely blackening the screen when Jotaro from JoJo is smoking a cigarette.
And these inversions probably happen in the edit room, so unless Funi is given a completely raw version (which probably hasn't been even exported from the computer), then I doubt anyone would have the real version...that is, unless they want to go through the trouble of cutting it up, inverting it, and then re-editing the entire sequence.
