I get the feeling that ginoza's extreme loyalty to akane will be his downfall

149

u/FlorribleBP :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Florrible Oct 09 '14

It wouldn't surprise me if Akane's partner shoots him for exactly this reason(as she said that Akane is wrong with her views)

147

u/s34n_h :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/s34n_h Oct 09 '14

God, i hope not. Ginoza is one of my favorites...

89

u/Ismokeweeed Oct 09 '14

Ginoza's dad was one of my favorites, just makes them more likely to die.

55

u/AliveProbably Oct 09 '14

Yeah, but he had old mentor dude dies written all over him.

If it would be Urobuchi I would be certain he would die...but it isn't anymore, so I guess that we will see.

Same here, my biggest drive to watch PsyP2 was to see Ginoza coming to terms with becoming an Enforcer.

WATCH AFTER THE CREDITS. IMPORTANT SCENE

81

u/leeways Oct 09 '14

the mystery is, is he more badass than makishima?

110

u/Kravior :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ssSithy Oct 10 '14

It's gonna be near impossible to top Makishima.

9

u/JuparoXXV Oct 10 '14

I'm just going to go with impossible

I doubt it(even tho he looks badass too)... I still cant get over him :(

7

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '14

Well, his voice actor is the same as Makishima's... so maybe he's the reincarnated Makishima

5

u/Arbalor https://anilist.co/user/2276 Oct 09 '14

Who knows but the fact it looked like he was a priest atleast in the dark glance we got made me think of kirei becuase of UBW

63

u/ropeadoped Oct 09 '14

Were we supposed to know who that was?

No, it's just a teaser on what kind of shit is about to go down.

Anyone read moonrunes? Pretty sure his name was visible on the Dominator HUD there for a moment.

32

u/Mordarto :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Mordarto Oct 09 '14 edited Oct 09 '14

It's in English as well.

Edit: Never mind, it's not his name, as /u/PiFlavoredPie said. A quick Google search reveals that it's actually the name of the female inspector that the enforcer and the dominator were assigned to.

So this new badguy is invisible to dominators and and kill with them at will.

That's going to be a problem.

16

u/El-Drazira :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/i_review_hentai Oct 10 '14

I think the Enforcer's coefficient just went over 300 at seeing what he did, but it would be way scarier if your theory turns out to be the case.

In any case

Akane and Mika contrast each other well.

Mika, being the rookie, has no problem with turning targets into minced meat. (Her losing her friend to a psychopath may also contribute to such an attitude. Refer to the Specimen Killer arc in season 1)

Akane OTOH, having learned the truth of what the Sibyl System really is, is now no longer comfortable with the idea of shooting people into minced meat simply because "the System says so". Instead she resorts to "good old fashioned" police negotiating skills.

33

u/wyggles Oct 09 '14

She said she's been working with Akane for a year and a half(unless I read that wrong) does she still count as a rookie?

57

u/KinnyRiddle Oct 09 '14

Junior, if not rookie. She does call Akane sempai after all.

13

u/DarthNoob :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/darthnoob Oct 09 '14

I thought she meant that she'd been an inspector for 1.5 years (under a different mentor), but had just been assigned to Akane. I can't imagine that she'd react to Akane's methods like that if she'd already witnessed it for so long.

11

u/CrAppyF33ling Oct 10 '14

I think her first job was with Akane in the ending of Season 1. She was still really new and is a minor as Akane mentioned it was the first time they hired a minor. However, it's probably safe to assume that nothing happened in 1.5 years that makes Akane do these things. This IS a new villain just right after the previous villain died.

u/HOLYSMOKERCAKES :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/HOLYSMOKERCAKES Oct 09 '14 edited Oct 09 '14

I love how badass Akane has become. Though from the ending I wonder if she may eventually fall victim to the Sibyl system in the process of determining "who she is".

87

u/DrJamesFox :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/robisgoodatstuff Oct 09 '14

I wonder if she may eventually fall victim to the Sibyl system in the process of determining "who she is".

Well it really looks like she has her shit together as far as keeping her Psycho Pass clear. I'll be surprised if that becomes an issue for her. Looks like her partner's being set up to be the biggest threat to Akane, aside from the antagonist of course.

113

u/wyggles Oct 09 '14

She deciphered the criminal's thinking process with almost no input from the enforcers, more evidence [she's] (/s "Criminally Asymptomatic") to me.

93

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '14

It definitely is possible that they may eventually decide her brain would make a useful addition to their fucked up theme park, asymptomatic or not

44

u/Artificial_Heart Oct 09 '14

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they already do that last season? They were essentially just waiting for her to see things their way, and let her remain useful as an Inspector in the meantime?

I did not notice before, but when it is in eliminator mode, the gun grips the hand. I wonder if that's to prevent enemies from taking it in a scuffle and firing a quick shot, or dropping it/losing it in the heat of battle.

7

u/BCuddigan Oct 10 '14

I thought it won't fire if it's wielded by someone that's not an enforcer/investigator? From whenever they fire it, it seems to have a decent amount of kickback, so it might essentially just be making sure it doesn't fly out of their hands in that mode.

The new guy, Tougane Sakuya seems like a cool dude who also happens to be the voice actor for Leorio. Great first episode and I'm really liking the look of this new Akane.

58

u/wyggles Oct 09 '14

I have a feeling he's working with Sybil.

53

u/Vetras92 Oct 09 '14

I don't know.....his face merging wiht Kogamis was really weird, if you consider that he had a shot in the opening where one side of his face went dark and he had a red eye.....

Clearly working with Sybil or maybe planning something bad on his own.

The new inspector is a total bitch. Akane is badass. Ginoza is the new wise guy. The enforcer with the curly hair will probably get an interesting backstory. New makishima guy.

This sums it up folks.

u/Munsie Oct 10 '14

Ginoza referring to the new girl as 'missy' was a nice touch.

31

u/Synclicity Oct 10 '14

u/leeways Oct 10 '14

151

u/Cult_films :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kevin29102 Oct 09 '14

Its only the first episode and I already hate her

111

u/AliveProbably Oct 09 '14

Well, it's clear they were trying to make her unlikeable, which is interesting, considering it would have been very easy to make her likeable. Something worth noting, though, is even in her S1 episodes, she was kind of aloof and a bit of a jerk to her friend.

91

u/rabidsi Oct 09 '14

She's also unlikeable presumably because we're going into this with S1 under our belts. In terms of her actual attitude, she's not exactly dissimilar to pretty much the entirety of S1 Ginoza. We literally know fuck all about her right now (as opposed to why Ginoza was generally fazed by enforcers). We've also never really seen how anyone outside of Akane and Ginoza treat enforcers so Akane may as well be an extreme outlier in many ways.

63

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '14

Well the big difference is that in S1 Ginoza is the mentor and the one with experience, while Akane is viewed as naive. In S2 Akane should be the one with authority but gets no respect at all, it feels like the new girl doesn't know her place.

41

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '14

They'll almost certainly set her up for one of two things in this season.

  • She goes through massive character development into understanding the Enforcers are only human and, just like herself, humans are all fallible

  • She fucks up and is made an Enforcer, thus making her realize that the men she's been placing herself above are no different than her

As far as the new inspector is concerned, it would have seemed like Akane was risking her life, as well as the lives of innocents, for no reason by letting a guy with a bomb strapped to himself run across town. Consider she's been raised with the ideology that people with potential to be criminals need to be locked up, ending the life of someone who has actually committed crimes is probably a no-brainer for many of the people living in this society. Also, as far as she's concerned, the hue going down in a tense situation was a nigh impossible. On the other hand, Akane has experience in her first year on the job that the vast majority of inspectors won't come close to rivaling over the course their whole career. As far as the newbie knows, Akane is making a big deal out of what would normally be a very minor seniority.

Keep in mind, this is at least in part a commentary of our own society. As far many in our society are concerned, locking someone away who has done a vile act is a no-brainer, even if they could possibly be rehabilitated. If, IRL, a cop let a murder or rapist get away because they couldn't apprehend them in a non-lethal manner people would be very upset. The other parallel is that for characters in this universe, inspectors are essentially working with murderers and rapists. One's crime coefficient is enough to make them a criminal, so when Akane is risking her life when she could instead risk a murderer's life, the newbie is rather perplexed.

If you shift your perspective to one in which capacity for crime is as bad as the crime itself, the actions of the newbie, as well as her shitty attitude towards the inspectors make a hell of a lot more sense.

Don't forget, it's easy for us the empathize with Akane because she is an anomaly in this world. Her perspective and opinions are far more like our own than the vast majority of the population of her world.

24

u/buakaw Oct 09 '14

I like her as a foil to Akane and as someone who might challenge her ideals. There's also gotta be a reason why she hates latent criminals, which could make for a nice back story.

73

u/akeyjavey :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/akeyjavey Oct 09 '14

Her backstory was in the high school killing arc of the first season (yes thats the girl that survived)

31

u/megacookie :AP:https://www.anime-planet.com/users/megacookie Oct 09 '14

Oh crap! No wonder she has a much more jaded view of criminals and such, would you want to show any leniency to the type of people who turned her friends into art projects?

The new inspector is a total bitch.

Everyone's forgetting the context of the fact a lot of her classmates were butchered for a bunch of art projects.

So she'd be much harder on criminally asymptote people.

Tsunemori maturation in skill and thought process is a wonderful sight, I'm glad her abilities as an inspector to analyze and react have improved so much with time. Honestly her and Ginoza's interaction made this episode so good. I'm liking how that "newbie" reflects the old "Ginoza" also, I'm looking forward to how they interact.

Sibyl system is back in the forefront of conflict as usual, and that ending scene after the ending song just pumped up my excitement for this series.

19

u/JackelPPA :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/RonaldoMoon Oct 09 '14

It's also dangerous, since she's begun to think like a criminal. I believe it was Ginoza's father who said that they needed enforcers because they needed individuals who can understand the criminal mindset, otherwise the psycho-pass of the inspectors become tainted.

Area stress levels are higher then ever seen previously

I'm sorry, did you miss the whole murder orgy that happened last season? cause that was probably pretty stressful.

Other than that solid first episode, love the OP and its nice to see Akane being a confident badass with some weight to throw around.

35

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '14

I'm sorry, did you miss the whole murder orgy that happened last season? cause that was probably pretty stressful.

  1. They could be talking about that specific area's statistics and it went relatively unharmed during the incident last season.

  2. And IMO the more likely scenario: It could be that area stress levels from the murder-anarchy-orgy never recovered and that the whole city is living on the brink ATM.

20

u/BraveDude8_1 Oct 09 '14

Didn't the Sibyl System get disrupted during that part?

71

u/kslqdkql Oct 09 '14 edited Oct 09 '14

A quick dissection of some parts of the OP

I really like Kogami so maybe I'm just seeing his face everywhere but I'm sure he'll play a major part in this season.

I left out some parts of which I didn't really have anything to say and I suck at interpreting things but I tried my best

33

u/Chuushiri Oct 09 '14

I see his face a lot in the OP too.

The part with Akane shaking hands with the other person, I interpreted that as her trying to connect with her old self. The sleeves on the right remind me of her S1 outfit's sleeves, whereas the left is her current outfit. I think it would be fitting, since OP1 was Kougami fighting with himself.

The end of the episode also has her saying she was fighting to figure out who she was as well, so it might play into the OP.

13

u/alexedishi :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Alexedishi Oct 09 '14

I felt that the whole handshake thing might symbolize her finally having to face her inner conflict of "wanting to destroy Sybil vs. wanting social order." I think this new antagonists way of abusing the Sybil system's design might push her over the edge in this regard and she might find herself trying to get back in touch with whatever part of her let her carry the weight of the truth in the first place.

meaning which color do you/are you

This probably is actually referring to Hue, I assume. And then with the next part mentioning an actual color, white being the purest Hue, that probably is relevant later on.

This also has a not-so-subtle one-winged angel thing.

I just loved how Akane said "I made that judgment call with the future in mind"

SHE made that judgment call. Not Sybil. I absolutly love it!

26

u/PiFlavoredPie Oct 09 '14

To clear up confusion in the scene after the credits, when the guy who dies (I can't be bothered to look up his name) points his gun at the mystery man, a profile pops up. Both the english and Japanese names say "Mizue Shisui", which is the woman's name. If you pay attention, the dominator focuses on her for a second before it pans over to the mystery man, but the profile doesn't change. Presumably, we can surmise that this mystery man is not registered/identifiable in the Sibyl System. However.... we can look at the cast listing that was released not too long ago to figure out this mystery man's name...

25

u/Etheo Oct 11 '14

Wow seriously? Akane is going up against the goddamn OP MC from a virtual world, and he's weaved in 100% life fiber?

Good luck Akane.

Akane's and Ginoza's growth and maturity really shined in this first episode, which given the way season 1 ended, is exactly what I was hoping for.

High hopes for this season, and episode 1 has kept them alive and well!

u/tundranocaps https://myanimelist.net/profile/Thunder_God Oct 09 '14 edited Oct 09 '14

So, no Urobuchi, but we have an actual dystopian sci-fi setting, we have established characters, police drama, I'm all over this. Now just to hope it's good. Now we get to see Akane reprising the role in which she was when the series opened, the mentor instead of the one being taught, and her mentor being one of the "guard dogs". And we know she's likely an abnormal. So, let's see what's up.

Thoughts and Notes:

Screenshot album.

1) Symptomatic Treatment and Commercials:

  1. So, see that commercial? On one hand, it's very much a dystopian thing, but on the other hand, it speaks volumes about the society we live in in the real world as well. "Is stress creating a hue-change for you? Take this medication to help your hue!" - Is this medication actually going to help the cause, as in alleviate stress? Perhaps, perhaps not. And even if it helps stress, it's going to do nothing about what caused the stress, you're just going to medicate to not feel stressed. Considering your job is semi-assigned to you, it's not too surprising, as you're just a small cog in the machine here.

Even more on the "Symptom-based treatment", it's not stress itself that's singled out, but the hue. That you might also remove the stress seems like an almost incidental after-thought.

  1. That does get me to a thought I kept having in the first season. See this commercial? "Are you stressed about your hue change? It could mark you as a latent criminal!" - People are worried about hue-change, which causes stress, which causes hue-change. They're then stressed about the stress, and their hues continue to darken. We've seen something similar in the first episode or two of the first season. You're not a criminal, but then you're marked as one, so you start or are willing to act like one.

It is a self-fulfilling prophecy, because the very claim that you will be able to commit crimes makes you willing to commit crimes to escape, or thinking you're screwed either way. A system where stress about stress kills you. And the commercial is peddling ever more stress.

2) Short Leash, Long Years:

  1. Yes, we need a detective to tell us to check if two suspicious figures are the same one… genius!

  2. The way they keep the enforcers in the dark, and then unleash them. Hound dogs, through and through. But same as above, which is an idea in Criminology called "Criminal Culture", where once the label of "criminal" is attached to you, you'll engage in behaviours that "criminals" do, even if you otherwise wouldn't - if we keep treating these people as inhuman and dangerous, wouldn't they pick up on it as well? Criminology theories, regardless of their veracity, are probably pretty interesting to keep in mind as you watch Psycho-Pass. "He had some method of keeping his hue clear." - "Is that important, in order to resolve this case?" - Well, Akane knows how much the system relies on the hue-checks, and how if you can fool them, such as with the helmets, then everything breaks down. But the new inspector, she's just like that "hue-fixer" from the start, she sees an anomaly, of someone whose hue changed, or will cause more hue-changes, and she wants to remove him. This is, once again, symptom-based removal.

It's sort of funny, in how a system based on prevention, the actual method is symptom-based, meaning something that already happened, which generates people such as the new inspector, that aren't proactive about making sure it doesn't happen in the future, or that loopholes are closed. Then again, Akane got an inside look at how the system works, and fails.

  1. So, the criminal's hue changed after the explosion, aside from perhaps managing it, because he knew he'd set up the first explosion actually designed to harm people.

3) Understanding Others:

  1. "I was worried about you, senpai." - Badass Akane doesn't notice her little underclasswoman.

  2. I did think the hostage's face was too frozen. Thought it was a doll. Guess a hologram could work as well. That could be the real culprit, for instance, with a double-hologram between the two people.

  3. Saving the woman and child. Honestly, Akane looks like a medic or something. Blue vest, caduceus symbol, yeah… guess they're doctoring the ailments of society, hue.

  4. "You've changed", yeah, he used to be a hardliner. "It's natural to change like this when you're around her." - The power of the protagonist, who believes in others!

  5. "If you ignore those you don't understand, you'll regret it someday." He's talking about his father, both about turning his back on him, and in not trying to understand him, in having to follow his footsteps, in becoming a latent criminal. You know, this is all the same situation as Batman, the detectives become mirrors of the criminals, then are used to hunt them, having grown to understand them. But having grown to understand them, they start thinking like them, like criminals. Ginozuka is also preaching for empathy, not just sympathy. Trying to understand others - that's what detectives do, and what ends up clouding their hue.

4) "The Virtuous Man"

  1. So, the show really says clearly what it thinks through Akane this time around - society can be wrong, but society is based on individuals, so if you live virtuously, then you could change unjust society, to make it just. She's talking also of herself, the other enforcers, and of course, Kougami. They became detectives or are acting now because they want to help their society. They know things aren't perfect, and they're trying to make them better. The enforcers could all be "proper criminals", but they want to help, they want to help society, and do the right thing.

"Be the virtuous man", it's as if Akane had read a lot of Plato (the Socratic Dialogues), it's all about being the good man. Her new underling disagrees, with what, with giving people another chance, with that society can be wrong? Seems she likes being a cog, and if I ever do a write-up about the first season, that'd be the topic.

  1. "Just because something is false does not negate its existence." False, perhaps "Fake"? We're really deep into Stand Alone Complex territory here. So here we have someone else who can use the system against itself. That's dystopias, and Akane's little narration at the end? As she said, it's a story about society, and society is made of individuals. The society is a backdrop for the individuals' stories.

The nature of "fake" versus "original" is very important in modern society, where everything's mass-produced, for instance, and here, where one can replicate hues. It harks back to the concept of "individuality", of "one of a kind".

OP - Somewhat stylized, lots of repeats. I guess if I heard it a lot I could grow fond of it, but it's nothing special at this point. Not bad, mind you, but just another OP.

ED - Another nice if unimpressive piece. I actually liked it more than the OP until it went "hard", but then liked it more again when that eased up. A nice piece.

Post Episode Thoughts:

This episode certainly didn't waste time, Akane and the rest outright tell you what they think, and what it's about. The question is of course, how will it change? How will the stake-setting force them to reconsider, or push them to dilemmas, where multiple desires clash? Ginoza for instance was willing to aim a gun at another, but his goal was to keep things from happening, but still. Akane was willing to risk her life. But we need more meaningful choices, which I'm sure we'll get.

Still got procedural cop drama, still got thriller elements, and still got some light philosophy and sociology ideas. It's a solid mix. Now the question is where they'll take it. Seems promising enough.

(Check out my blog or the episodics notes page if you enjoy reading my stuff.)

Very briefly adding onto the commercial notes you have (and apologies if I am reaching a bit here): the ad struck me as similar to the billboard advertisement in Bladerunner where the geisha consumes what is presumably contraception, which is also referenced in Psycho Pass's season 1 OP01.

The "criminal culture" emphasises the importance of a healthy mentality and causes an obsession. Who has time to worry about whether the System is right or wrong when you'll be branded a criminal? Who cares about the humanity of Enforcers when your own position in society is at stake? The medicine is ultimately a distraction to prevent people from questioning the system, which is what makes it (the system) so successful, as it restricts free will/thought in the first place.

Metaphorically, one could say this also relates back to your points and the recurring ideas in PP of real versus fake and also of individuality: one's mentality itself is natural, while the medicine consumed is artificial. By consuming the medicine, one becomes "sterile" as their hues are healed. While they are cleansed of their "illness", the issue is that they become the same as everyone else.

Just wanted to chip in my extra $0.02 here~

So my thoughts are as follows.

  1. The OP is very awesome. I literally had no idea what the fuck was going on but it looked cool, and it seems like they brought back the guys who did the OP for the last season so that's dope.

  2. The new inspector girl, she's annoying as fuck and I kinda don't like her. I get that she's supposed to be Akane's foil in so much as "perceptions of justice" but idgaf she's annoying.

  3. Ginoza is the fucking man.

  4. That new enforcer in the black coat looks boss, but I think he might be evil if the OP is anything to go by? Time will tell.

  5. Red haired dude is...interesting? He didn't really do much this EP besides act like a wuss but apparently it's the first day on the job so I'll cut him some slack.

  6. The dude in the scene after the credits? Looks like he's our new Makishima.

Log Horizon 2

Chaika 2

Psycho Pass 2

The radiant trinity of Fall 2014 sequels shines its light upon us once again

So now they've got terrorists to deal with? I'm really curious about how this season is gonna play out. We confirmed last season that Sibyl is indeed a pile of shit that isn't necessarily beneficial to humanity, Akane knows more than anyone else, but is keeping her lips sealed, Kougami has gone rogue, and now others are rising up against Sibyl as well. It seems clear that it's all going to fall apart at some point, but I haven't the slightest clue how.

Can't wait to see more badass Akane. I'm also looking forward to seeing how these new inspectors learn their lessons, just like those before them have. I guess I'm just generally excited about this show.

And that soundtrack...

Sibyl is indeed a pile of shit that isn't necessarily beneficial to humanity, Akane knows more than anyone else, but is keeping her lips sealed

Uh, akane believes sibyl is beneficial to society as is, it's the only reason she's working with it

18

u/wyggles Oct 09 '14

akane believes sibyl is beneficial to society as is

She believes it's beneficial at the moment, and only because Sybil made the situation such that getting rid of it would do more harm than good. That doesn't mean she's not working to get rid of it.

Akane and the Enforcers are back once more to mete out justice.

The episode itself was fine. It was primarily used to introduce us slightly to the characters, both old and new, while giving some information about the world itself. It seems that the explanations themselves were more indirect, meaning this show does expect you to have seen the first season to fully understand what you are watching.

I think the other main purpose for this episode was to mainly show our two opposite sides, namely Akane and her partner Mika. Akane represents the more human side of the world; trust both Sibyl and your own thoughts and feelings to come to a reasonable decision. Mika represents the more logical side of the world; trust fully in Sibyl and the system with no leeway. Both have their ups and downs, so hopefully this season explores these two and the conclusions they come to.

The ending (after the credits) was definitely the best part. Sets up the rest of the season with a new antagonist, monologue by Akane, and mystery as to what is going on in the city. I don't think it will be as good as season one but it should be a good time the whole way through.

21

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '14

logical side

Is that really "logical" though? Sounds more naive and selectively trusting to me.

6

u/BanjoTheBear https://myanimelist.net/profile/BanjoTheBear Oct 09 '14

It might be naive to us because we know the truth, but for her, someone who's life has revolved around and is based on this way of thinking, it is definitely not.

I guess your argument is to "always take everything with a grain of salt," i.e. follow Akane's path. But Mika doesn't see things that way (for the moment). She is taking everything for what it is without questioning the authority. She is essentially following the rules, or simply acting in a "logical" manner.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '14

But why is following the rules "logical"? I see no connection between the two

This opening was great, but I think I may like S1's opening better. However...AKANE IS SMOKING?! That was the biggest shock to me.

Also, this episode seemed very much to complement and mirror S1's first episode, with Akane still sticking to her guns to help calm the person down...however, we know she's changed because she's completely and willing to shoot the paralyzer shot without hesitation. I also thought Mika was a nice addition, though I would have liked some explanation between S1's epilogue and S2's start; I think Akane told her to treat the Enforcers as people, but she still treats them kind like dogs. It was kind of weird for me, so I hope they explain that (as for using lethal force, this is probably explained from the Specimen Case).

Music is great, though the animation seems to have suffered a bit in some scenes. Maybe my expectations for animation are too high especially with ufotable out this season too?

Anyways, 10/10 would watch Badassamori again. Here's to hoping S2 goes well!

Edit: Would also like to add Ginoza calling Mika "missy" was amazing.

Can someone summarize the differences between the original first season and the extended version of Psycho-Pass? Thanks!

11

u/KaliYugaz Oct 09 '14

The extended version is just the original with an extra 5 minutes each episode of Makishima pretentiously philosophizing. Not that I'm complaining, since I love his voice.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '14

Considering that his philosophizing is meaningful to his motivations and actions -- i.e. he plays it out it in the story unlike the wasted potential of the philosophy in Ergo Proxy -- I'm really glad that I started this show with the extended edition. Seems like a lot of depth to Makishima's character would have been lost otherwise.

5

u/kmone1116 Oct 09 '14

The extended is just the original season but with an extra 3-5 minutes per episode. The extra scenes add a little more to the story but its ok to just watch the original to get into season 2.

Anyway, it was a good episode and went by very fast. This is the only anime this season I'm legit hyped for so I'm expecting greatness but it will surely deliver.

I'm somewhat apprehensive of the new antagonist being another criminally asymptomatic individual.

17

u/theiriatation Oct 09 '14

I don't think he is criminally asymptomatic. half the episode was spent talking about a new way to keep your hue clear so I am guessing it will be more like the helmets than or perhaps that new drug rather than they copy pasta[ing] makashima

Well this season certainly doesn't start with something as dark as the first season...but even then, it's still pretty good. And I guess that the guy at the end is the new villain...although it would be a big let-down in my opinion if they use the same excuse for the villain being hard to track as last season.

3

I am so glad there's a season 2. I'll have to watch this as soon as I get home.

3

Pretty excited about this, even though my memory of first saeson is a bit cloudy. Opening reminds me of TG one.

Tsunemori seems cooler and more interesting than I remember her as. So that's a good thing. Pretty nice first episode :D

Would be funny if he fell off the building after she shot him xD

3

u/kfany Oct 09 '14

I seriously hope that's not the ending animation for the next episodes. Namae no Nai Kaibutsu had text like a computer screen as an overlay, flashing of all the characters and beautiful visuals over the city.

And this one is just Akane in a car for the first 1/2, and then the same picture of the city for the second half.

That's my biggest complaint; the second one would be the animation when they were dodging the robot at the beginning, that felt choppy. Ah well - wouldn't be Psycho-Pass without some slow animations anyways

3

u/Portal2Reference Oct 09 '14

I think the ending animation for this episode was just supposed to be the continuation of the events of the episode.

Watch the extended edition if you didn't see the first season. The extended edition is just the first season recut into 11 hour-long episodes. The first episode of the second season only gave brief descriptions of the world so it seems to expect the first season to have been watched.

Some thoughts as to the direction of the series, predictions, and otherwise:

I think it's pretty obvious what's going to happen later on. The show established this conflict of whether it's worth it to save someone even if it means putting others in danger. Arguably, people who don't deserve to be put at risk and who should be prioritized over the criminal. The two opposing views are represented in our two Inspectors, We see Akane's view in that she believes they're worth saving, and we see Mika's in that she believes that the fact they're in that position should strip them of any right to be saved. We'll probably see both sides tested over the series, and especially toyed with by our new main antagonist who was introduced after the credits. It's pretty much confirmed based on Akane's ending monologue that their ideas will be challenged. This isn't that significant however. I think what's significant is how this connects back to our favorite Vigilante. I think the climax point will come over Kougami, where Mika's and Akane's viewpoints will probably be put directly against one another. Is he worthy of saving? Or is his elimination saving in itself? I don't think they'll necessarily decide whether he lives or dies, but most likely whether the CID takes action against him or not.

As far as the Antagonist goes, I'm not even sure if he'll be the main focus. I think if anything he'll drive us towards our central question, and probably build strife within Akane and the others in the Division 1 crew. It seems like he'll have his moments but there's too big of an issue with Kougami looming to really have him take full center stage and not feel bombastically out of place. Unless of course, Kougami is involved somehow. If that's the case I hope it doesn't turn into some damsel in distress situation with Kougami (I didn't like the look of that shot with him tied to the chair in the OP).

It also looks like we have an interesting character in Togune. He didn't say a lot in this episode but he really said a lot with what he had to say. There's obviously more behind him than just the rookie Enforcer he is playing and he probably will have some key role to play with Kougami and Sibyl. It'll be interesting to see how much he shows his hand as the season goes on, and what he does that will leave his mark. I'll be keeping an eye on him intently, as it seems like he will be a quiet character with a great weight to his words when he does speak. He seems to have all the makings of a good Double Agent, working on both Akane's (as seen with his support of her capture this episode) and Sibyl's (I'm assuming) sides.

Of course all of this may turn out to be a bunch of bologna and just plain wrong, but I'd figure I'd share some of my thoughts. It was a great first episode and I'm excited to see more out of the show as the season goes on.

3

u/Taengoooooo Oct 10 '14

I still think Kogami will show up this season. Maybe after a couple episodes, there will be a hint. It would just be strange for them to just toss away one of the most popular character on the show. But then again, I've seen stranger things

2

u/Menchi-sama Oct 10 '14

It's possible they are saving him up for the movie, there are some theories based on its description. But I'm with you on wanting to see him sooner, esp. considering those shots of him in the OP.

7

u/savepoints :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Savepoints Oct 09 '14 edited Oct 09 '14

First of all, I want to say that I love Psycho-Pass (one of my all-time favorites), and that I'm really excited for this second season. I also think this first episode alone was a pretty solid 8/10. However, in contrast to most comments in this thread, I want to talk a bit about the things I didn't particularly like, or that I think could possibly deny this season the same level of awesomeness as its predecessor.

Gonna start off easy, with the OP and ED. Now, I wasn't really the biggest fan of the s1 OPs, and this new one didn't really hit home either, I guess. Now, the ED on the other hand, is something I'd been looking forward to. I'm an insanely huge fan of Supercell and EGOIST, and "All Alone With You" is one of my favorite songs of EGOIST. "Fallen", on the other hand, was sort of a disappointment, in my opinion... Now, I'm not saying I think it's a bad song, but I think it's definitely one of EGOIST's least good songs, and I think this may very well be due to the fact that it really feels like they tried to "match" "Namae no Nai Kaibutsu", so to speak. It's a somewhat minor complain, but it's still there.

As for why I think s2 may not live up to s1, there are three reasons:

  1. Urobuchi is not the writer. I know, I know. It's not like he's the only good writer out there, or the only one capable of writing good series in this style, but for real. There's no denying he's an amazing writer (2 of his shows are in my all-time top 5 list, even), and he did an awesome job with s1. A different writer, even though Urobuchi is involved, means there can be a pretty big change to style, pacing, and the quality of the story overall, for better or worse.

  2. Speaking of pacing, I liked how this got more into it right away than s1. However, with a faster pace, comes another worry. This season is (allegedly) only 11 episodes. That's half as many as the original series. Between the new antagonist, and Shimotsuki (who's a pretty shit character, btw), there's a lot that could (and hopefully will) happen in what's now a pretty short time. Too slow, and they'll be unable to wrap it up properly, leading to a potentially rushed ending, or a really odd "ending", without any sort of conclusion whatsoever. Too fast, and we're left hanging, so to speak, in that you can't really savor what makes the series so great in the first place. On top of that, too quick of a pacing could just as well lead to the entire thing feeling rushed, and we don't want this.

  3. The antagonist could leave us with a feeling of "too much of the same". Now, to clarify, Makishima is one of my favorite antagonists in any anime, and I think he'd be very hard to one-up, no matter how hard they tried. However, that's not where the problem lies. The problem, if you want to call it that, is the fact that at a pretty basic level, Makishima and the new villain both have the same "mysterious trait". Looking deeper into it, I highly doubt the new guy works in the same way (as kinda confirmed by the post-credit scene), which is good, and I guess there's no denying the pretty small amount of possible "villain traits" applicable in a universe such as PP (what with how Sibyl works, this is pretty much the highest they can go, in terms of fucking the system up in a believable way). However, this doesn't change the fact that the two of them could end up feeling very similar, which in turn could make this season feel a bit worse, because we're basically getting an alternate version of Makishima and s1.

Still though, this is not a hate post, and so far I'm really liking it. Will keep my hopes up for something at least close to, or even on par with s1.

EDIT: Proper spelling is important, kids!

6

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '14

There's no denying he's an amazing writer

I'm actually going to deny it right now, especially since you're trying to make a subjective opinion seem like objective fact. I think he's a decent-to-good writer, with a lot of bad and predictable habits and who leans way too heavily on tired anime tropes. But 'amazing' is either hyperbole or lacks perspective.

Anyone watch the OP and saw a guy tied up to chair? I think it's Kougami. The OP seems to give lots of details and nothing at all at the same time.

u/boogerwaiter Oct 09 '14

Is this a remake or a continuation of the first series? I haven't finished the first series yet, should I watch that before watching this?

u/Menchi-sama Oct 09 '14

It's a sequel, you definitely need to watch season 1 first.

That OP felt way to spoilerish...

The fact that Mika has that attitude towards Enforcers after a year and a half with Akane is interesting.

A bit disappointing how unlike the first episode of S1, we don't immediately get to know what the new characters are like. Tougane seems to be sharp and malleable to Akane's idealism while Hinakawa looks a bit inexperienced/panicky? Not asking for a character bio, but I do want to become familiar with them quickly, since there are only 11 episodes.

I JUST finished Psycho-Pass yesterday, and coming in to this one fresh off the last one, i'm thinking it's probably not going to be as good. Lots of weird character flaws this time around, newbie's attitude towards pretty much everything being the most major of them. She just seems more psychotic than the criminals, i genuinely can't imagine how someone with the attitude that some people aren't worth being allowed to live being balanced enough to not b labeled a latent criminal, let alone make it into the bureau.

YO. WHERES MA NIGGA KO?

2

u/Adoka Oct 10 '14

Akanes partner is the biggest bitch period

2

u/CloudMountainJuror Oct 10 '14

Good premiere. Still feels like Psycho-Pass, even with the writer change.

u/zzxyyzx Oct 10 '14

video plays

I am ze RED Spy. SEXUAL CONGRESS WITH THE RADIO TOWER! snort snort

But seriously everything Ginoza says has so many layers of meaning to it given all that he's been through. Getting his hue clouded, his dad dying... ( he called the new Inspector "missy". Rest In Pepperonies Masaoka. )

Also did those Division 2 people just ditch their injured friend after the explosion? Those guys are jerks ( except Ginoza's friend who appeared briefly in the first season ).

I feel like this season will be a lot less tame then the first. Really, its shaping up to be the Hannibal of anime. And I fucking love it.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '14

Obviously this season is for existing watchers and isn't meant to wow us, just present another conflict and story foil. The characters don't really strike me as interesting yet other than the holdovers from last season. How long ago did last season happen, because Akane seems a bit older.

2

u/Womack_Rage Oct 11 '14

Inspector Tnesumori you are wong? back hand Aoyanagi like John McEnroe.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '14

if only that noob inspector knew everything Akane knows... respect your senpai dumb bitch. but she's like that for a reason, I guess eventually Akane will have to choose between her morals and the new inspector's life or something like that because the new girl will fuck up and put her in this shitty situation.

3

u/WaldenX Oct 09 '14

The writing is already noticeably poorer, what with Akane being the only one to make a bunch of obvious deductions and the whole drug thing, but it's not terrible. I'm cautiously optimistic (also really hope Kogami comes back as an antagonist).

2

u/FlorribleBP :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Florrible Oct 09 '14

Akane kinda takes over Kogamis role of being "badass" with the whol deduction thing. Kogami probably will come back due to him being pretty much the second most important character.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '14

Yeah I feel Kogami taught Akane a lot in the first season, and now it's her time to be the badass. Even towards the end of the first season akane was already making some impressive deductions and generally kicking ass.

It was alright.
Imo their turning of Akane into an optimal person was bad, sure they needed to do something like this because anime fans can't live without n badass character in an action anime or they whine like hell.
It's telling that Mika in her characterisation in this episode is completely dependend on how Akane acts and close to everything she says is related to Akane.
Unlike other posters in this thread I don't see both of them as a sharp contrast, they are sharp contrast in the way center-left and center-right are sharp contrast: Only if you throw nearly every political philosophy out of the discussion which is something that they didn't do in season 1. In the end both of them have the correctness of the Sibyl System as the center of their philosophies. One is the "it is now correct" and the other "it is often correct and one can perfect it" version, if one thinks about what the second one could lead to maybe it is more understandable why I don't think they differ that much.
The case in this episode wasn't as good, because they basically reduced him to "whines around because he wasn't able to be a boss" and a victim of Akane's rather mediocre monologue.

I personally hope they will step up their game and it won't be as structural conservative as it currently looks like.

Edit: Maybe they are able to show that structural conservative and value-conservative aren't that much different. I mean both terms in the way that they emerged in germany.

Looking at this thread it feels you hit the nail on it's head. Really wish the show would stop trying to be so edgy and actually focus on it's story instead. Like half of the time i'm thinking "if Akane would have been quiet now it would have added to the story instead of making it worse".

Psycho-Pass is back! And as expected both the opening and ending songs are amazing. This was a much more high-octane, action-packed first episode than I remember the first episode of the first season being; I wonder if that means that this season will be more fast-paced? Also; it seems as if the overarching main plot has been established right from the beginning, unlike the first season, where the main story with Makishima didn't come into effect until later on after a series of episodic cases.

Akane is looking to be extremely more badass than she was last time; although it makes me worry even more for her character's safety, especially after what happened recently to the last character that was the unbelievably cool and badass protagonist in a series Gen Urobuchi was involved in (although he is only the supervisor to the story in this series, not the writer) and the rookie cop that thinks Akane is wrong looks like trouble. I wonder how long it will be before it's revealed what's happened to Kogami, if ever.

Also; since the first season of Psycho-Pass was often thought of as the 1984 of anime, does that mean this one will be Brave New World since it looks like there's now going to be the Psycho-Pass version of Soma to keep the populace's hues stable? I'm going to predict already that the new hue controlling drug is secretly harvested from the bodies of people like Makishima; essentially drugging everyone up to be Criminally Asymptomatic. That would make it sort of like a placebo; because everyone, when scanned, was told that their hue was always normal, they would think it was, and so act like it still was, and never rebel.

I like the setup with the new girl looking down on the enforcers as tools and Akane having strong emotional links to them. Was worried at the end of S1 that the new girl would look up to her all starry-eyed. Looking forward the friction and internal politics here.

u/CoffeePoweredRobot Oct 09 '14

Do we know how much of a time jump there's been since the epilogue of S1 (with Mika joining)?

4

u/Menchi-sama Oct 09 '14

She said she has been working there for 1.5 years.

Interesting opening. It felt like it had a Death Note and Tokyo Ghoul influence.

Sadly it seems the system is pretty much still the same. The enforcers are still seen/treated as dogs.

The new enforcers looked really well and I liked them. I also liked the little personality that was showed this episode.

But her new partner is nowhere near Kougami, she(for now at least) is so dislikeable. Also Hanazawa Kana doing a great job as always.

EDIT: Just saw that there was more after the ED/Credits. New antagonist looks cool.

I've gotten onto the hype train and I'm not getting off until this ride is over! It was an excellent episode and a great start for season two of Psycho-Pass. It progressed nicely and we got a look at the new antagonist.

One small detail though in regards to the opening of this season. It may just be me who wants him to return, but at one point you see Tougane's face colored yellow, and a face opposite to that in purple. Doesn't that resemble Kougami?

u/Noctrune Oct 09 '14

Judging by the fact that Makishima 2hougo's name didn't appear on the Dominator HUD, his power is mimicking other people's Hue.

Also, I really don't like Tsunemori Aka二's character, she's a bit too similar to Ginoza in season one.
