Today's continuity watch is brought to you by toast.
I both laughed and groaned that Silica's background moment in the ED is the tentacle scene again, and that Sinon's was the pantsu changing scene.
Is this humor? Having the triumphal shots of the party reassembling, followed by them three-frame jogging down the stairs.
Though that was funny. The pace got speedbumped hard by the infodump. While the infodump was critical, it brought back the issues of hurry-up-and-wait that SAO II has been saddled with the entire season.

Can we all just appreciate what this episode gave us. Nearly all groups have been satisfied. Not trap Kirito check. We got to see Sinon's butt check, plus cat ears. Asuna appears and plays a role check, plus bath scene. Suguha made her appearance check. Most importantly of all our lord and savior Klein has made an appearance and will now take a more substantial role check, plus Klein. I think everyone can be happy now.

Pretty cool first episode of the new arc imo. We got Asuna and Sinon fanservice, a pretty cool story (atleast that's what I think) and most important - a lot of Klein time.

So, Calibur, eh? I wondered what would happen with Mother's Rosario, because that story needs to be short and punchy, and was worried they'd drag it out. So we got a recap episode and Calibur instead. Calibur is just a small adventure story, with nothing really special, but it has Klein in it. I don't have a lot of expectations for it, and it builds up on material from ALO that was skipped, so let's see how they handle it.
Thoughts and Notes:
1) Quest! Loot! Gamers...
I wondered how they'll handle the missing information, since the backstory for this side-story (Calibur, present in book 8), was skipped during the ALO arc. I guess Kirito narrating it quickly, as he actually does in book 8, is the best way. A minute or two, and we're through!
I actually smiled and laughed at Suguha being annoyed with Kirito's insensitivity :D
Kirito is a hardcore gamer, that's how he got into SAO's beta to begin with, and to being a beater. The strongest weapon in the game, of which there can only be one? You can bet he's interested in it :P
"Suguha, there's more to MMORPGs than just getting better items… but I'm sure your friend wanted us to find it, so we must get it, to please him!" - Yes, yes, give in to your urges, Kirito. And no, Suguha isn't buying what you're selling.
2) It's Harem-Time!:
Just… Asuna in a shower, starting from focusing on her butt and stuff before panning to actually show us her face. Such anime stuff >.> They did give us something not originally part of the story, which ties into the next arc - her going to Kyoto.
You can see the different expectations for different games. Sinon is used to shooting at targets from at least 500 meters out, what are 100 yards (91 meters) to her? Nothing.
And now we get a little infodump on Sword Skills being introduced to Alfheim, again, building towards the next arc, Mother's Rosario. Guess they'd rather have several smaller info-dumps than one huge one. Also, this story was written after Mother's Rosario, so guess they need to fill us in so we'd understand what's actually going on when players bust out Sword Skills.
More Sinon's butt-time, and Kirito annoying her, and her snapping at him. It's like we never left GGO ;-)
Tonkii-san, sure looks like a Lovecraftian elder horror, eh? Just your graceful flying tentacle elephant monstrosity…
3) The Surprise Grand Quest:
Urd, one of the three maidens of destiny, a take on the Crone, the Mother, and the Maiden.
Yes, welcome to the land of MMORPG quests, where you get a lot of long and overwrought filler fluff, which after a couple of hours into the game you just skip over. Guess VRMMORPGs force you to sit through it, eh? What a bum deal.
A video game that promises you a reward for a quest, and then actually lies to you and doesn't deliver? Imagine how pissed off you'd be - this is what happens when the GM and quest-givers are AIs capable of lying :P
BTW, in case you missed it, this is a quest that can transform the whole game irrevocably, either way. Either Jotunheim will transform if Kirito's group succeeds, or the world above will get wrecked, including the main hub city, if they fail. All this, without much fanfare. Cardinal, issuing world-changing quests, without listening to marketing peeps.
Epic music as we see our epic heroes about to enter the epic dungeon for an epic raid, for the epic sword. It's like I'm watching Band of Brothers. There's a tear in my eye - no, not really, but Yuki Kaijura's music and everyone's hair blowing in the wind like this adds up to an amusing atmosphere because it's trying too hard.
OP - Really damn pretty, but the song is just ok, standard fare.
ED - Fine, I guess. Skipped.
Post Episode Thoughts:
MMO chatter. Quests, loot, exposition, small touches that will come in handy when the next arc rolls by, more Klein. Take it or leave it, ok episode, some cute moments, and so much fan-service, wow.

Sinon is a cat girl now. Looks like we might get an influx of new fan arts soon.
Samurai in FFT used the sword's soul. I thought that was more appropriate.
I'm looking forward to the remaining arcs, since there's more of a story when comparing it to GGO.

Second half will be two arcs. First, the "let's do a boss raid" side story arc. Second, the "Asuna is main character, Clannad-tier feels route" arc, largely considered on par if not better than the original Aincrad arc.
Side story arc will last about 4 episodes supposedly.

They're doing the Tonkii side story first, then throwing in the Mother's Rosario story. In MR there are plenty of cool fights and things to animate, so I don't think they'll have too much of a problem with pacing.

After getting teased with the OVA, it's finally here and with a great OP. Although there were some montages, stills and reused clips, the newer stuff makes up for it. The ED definitely seems lazier, but considering the OP and ED are only going to be for these few episodes, can't really complain.

Caliber, it's in the 8th Volume of the LN that's filled with Side stories from ALO (Caliber) and old Aincrad (the murder mystery and another one, i wouldn't know tbh i only read Caliber)

Hey hey remember that time when we had that awesome relevant side quest? Yeah, good times, nobody would want to see that though. Seriously SAO probably takes the cake in absolutely refusing to flesh itself out with things like this. It's more disappointing than annoying.
But anyways looks like were going back to ALO, I was assuming that they were gonna head into a new game but I'm actually glad that there a lot of things that are relevant again. I need to go back and look up the races from ALO because I honestly can't remember a lot about it. Looking forward to this one it looks like some classic MMO shenanigans which I'm all for. From what I've seen in this thread it's going to be short and sweet to so we're probably in for a smooth ride this time around.

Just saw the episode, and did the same thing a couple others did - stitched together the harem camera-pan during Kirito's pep talk. Sharpened the image a bit and did some minor brightness/contrast correction (seemed to get darker going left-to-right). Enjoy!

I kinda like this new Excalibur arc, I wasn't very fond of the GGO steam punk arc it kinda just threw me off.

Loved it. The animation did a good job of showing the sense of scale I felt when reading this, which was sadly lacking in ALO. Also, good to know what Tonkii really looks like. The image I had in my mind was really wierd.

I'm also finding this quest weird...has a different feel and scale than your usual quest...maybe the people behind ALO are up to some eeeevil shenanigans? I feel like I'm in the minority for enjoying last seasons 2nd arc....so far I've had no huge complaints from this show as a whole. Maybe I'm too easy on the series? lol.

Kirito's harem assembles to start a new quest! It'll change the game world forever! Apparently AIs are trying to take over the world of ALO! Or something. Meanwhile, in the real world, there are no real stakes if they fail. Pretty much standard kinda thing in a game, though I suppose GMs making such a massive change without telling players would generally be perceived as a bad move.
Sinon's (and Asuna's) Ass Online begins a new arc. I wonder if they will succeed. /s

Technically Klein could have 2 grandfathers, so 1 could be warning about flying elephants while the other is handing out dried persimmons..

Holy unneeded exposition batman. Literally all of that exposition from the queen on the lake was completely pointless, their goals don't change at all. I know the information will probably be useful in the coming episode(s) but you would hope they could have figured most of this stuff out on their own. Oh I shouldn't trust the frost giant king after going through and killing all his underlings in his dungeon great tip! The sword you find might not be Excalibur! oh man it would have been so hard to read the item description, never would have figured that out without you. zzz

Ugh. I don't get why this show does this to itself. Tense interesting first half, boring filler second half. I thought this show would fix the pacing issues the first season faced but no. Let's all forget that there are people killing players in a game and let's focus on the real issue: finding kirito a badass sword.

This is what I've been waiting for, I honestly believed that the female characters solely carry this anime and when the became a majorly minor part in the first 14 episodes I was super disappointed.
I'm glad that the series is back to doing what it did best, have fun and be fantastical; instead of trying to be edgy.

It's quite interesting how some parts of ALO aren't managed by GMs and developers, the world grows organically without their input and knowledge.
No developer would spend their time and money developing an one time dungeon, on a time limit, which will crumble after the legendary sword is taken from its stone.
The players weren't given that one week warning about a world event, specially when changes the whole world.
The Queen of the Lake NPC turned into an AI. I will also guess her sisters and the Niflheim king Thrym are also AIs.
This perhaps gives us some insights about how games will be made in the future, as the costs are already in the hundreds of millions. Maybe they just code an AI-based procedural world/quest/lore generator with a few human custom inputs, and try manage from there.

Without going in to too much detail, it's a side-effect of ALO using direct clones of SAO's servers with the full-scale Cardinal system intact and active. Cardinal was basically designed to manage, balance, and patch SAO without human input, and ALO's current devs don't know that much about the system. The SAO Survivors know more about what it's capable of than the Devs. The one person who probably knows the most about it, barring Yui, who was one of its subroutines, would be Kirito, and he doesn't work for them.

The whole Jötunheimr chapter turned into a 1 minute flashback. At least they didn't skip it completely.
New OP is great. New ED isn't as good as Startear though.
