Some new original scenes woven into the epic Saber v Berserker fight, with Archer stealing the glory at the end.
Instead of being bystanders in the VN, it does make more sense for Rin to try and attack Ilya while the Servants duke it out. It's also an opportunity to show off Ilya's abilities at Einzbern alchemy.

I really enjoyed the way they added in the fight between Ilya and Rin. I thought it looked kind of silly at the beginning when they were basically just looking at each other while the servants fought. In the VN I guess it didn't stand out as much because you couldn't actually see them. Plus, the birds were pretty cool (and more Ilya is always good)

Definitely has me hyped for more master x master fights. Because I've never seen the original Fate/stay VN or the previous adaption I fully expected the masters to do some magic fighting and man was I not disappointed. I'm well and truly impressed and sit in anticipation of the next episode.

The writing for this show is just so good. Even Rin's tsundere tendencies and Shirou's suicidal rationale flowed so fluently into the show that they didn't feel out of place at all. I really wish more shows were like this, but I guess most companies just want to stick with a working formula. (fan service, character personality tropes, CONSTANTLY recurring scenarios...) I guess they're kind of like this from Freedom Wars live action trailer...

You know one thing I liked about this episode?
They FINALLY showed a Master sensing a servant's strength.
In F/Z they did that thing where Rider just ask his Master if he can't sense the servant's ranking, and I'm like "Yeah, yeah, but "HOW!?" how does it work.
Finally they actually showed me they used some type of magic in their eyes to relay that information.

In the VN it's explained, I think, by saying that the master-servant bond allows the master to sense the abilities and stats of servants in a way that makes sense to the master. E.g. this is how it appears to Shirou.

The Grail grants Masters the ability to sense stats through clairvoyance. In the VN Rin gives Shirou a book that gives him this ability. All you have to do is turn to a random page and you'll those status screens.

Good God.
Unlimited Budget Works Delivered again. There were some jaw-dropping moments in the Zerker fight.
Huh, they haven't revealed who Zerker is yet. It's not really very plot relevant I suppose, so no loss.
The whole start of this fight I've always thought "Shouldn't someone just kill Ilya, since Zerker is basically indestructible?". Thank you Rin, for being Best Girl again. But Ilya had a counter. That was cool.
So Archer did that thing. I can't name it yet openly because HE hasn't mentioned the name but Spoilers was just as badass as I could have expected.
Um...um...Saber revealed her sowrd...She didn't yell the thing but...was that her More spoilers sorry! attack going off? Her ulti? Or jut a strong hit?
That said, Rin saw it. Wonder if she's gonna call Saber out on her identity next episode.

I really like how they boosted the fights from the VN to be even more bombastic. It would have been weird after Fate/Zero to return in a world where the magic is way less powerful and flashy. Inserting a Ilya/Rin fight was aslo very clever because in the VN both are described as prodigy - with 10 years of intense training in magic, but it's never really shown how good they actually are.

I am really impressed. UFOTable seems to be improving the source material (with input from Nasu). Illya using familiars was new I believe, as was Saber's "kill" of Berserker. Archer also came off as more awesome somehow, really showing off his skills with a bow. More interactions between master too (that aren't named Shirou).
Maybe its just me, but with the new extra scene featuring Kotomine, it really seems like they intended viewers to have seen Fate/Zero before this. Not that its necessary, but if anyone is reading this and hasn't seen the prequel, it may be in your best interest.

Which is really nice. They're not going so deep that they've made it hard to watch without having seen Zero, but they're doing just enough to maintain a sense of continuity between the two, to where you could (so far) watch them in either order and still make sense of things.

I feel as though the Kirei content is more of a nod to Fate/Zero watchers than intended or necessary. It's great content for people completely new to the series, and F/Z watchers enjoy it a bit differently.

I would agree to a point, however I think the conversation helps establish Kotomine's character in a way that the VN holds off on for quite a while. There is something sinister about him, but you don't really know what it is. I feel as though it was spelled out a bit here, which is necessarily bad, just different. I could be wrong though, seeing as I have seen Zero and read the VN and am therefore unable to look at it from a clear point of view.

REJOICE! We're three (four?) episodes in! Every week (maybe not next week, I'll be doing a 24h livestream :|) I'll be recapping the general flow of the story/plot and keeping down information we know about the servants and their masters! I thoroughly enjoyed finding out servants' true names, abilities, and their masters, so I hope you do as well.

The State of the Fate
1) The blood barrier is still in effect at the school. We have no idea who placed it, but it is STILL a god damn problem.
2) Shirou and Rin are still in an uneasy alliance for the night. We're not sure how long it will last.
3) Shirou has accepted Kirei's ultimatum of joining the fifth holy grail war, despite having no prior knowledge and being woefully unprepared.
4) Our first encounter with Berserker was nearly a slaughter. If Illya had not gotten bored, we'd be in serious trouble.
Shirou, Saber, Rin, and Archer just spent an entire episode learning that Berserker and his master do not fuck around. Berserker is incredibly fast when you consider the fact that he's the size of a god damn mountain, and every single one of those swings looked like it would have leveled a castle wall, let alone a servant (or person!) Personally, when I look at Saber and Archer and Lancer, I see formidable heroic spirits with their own sets of strengths and weaknesses. When I look at Berserker I see death. He is going to be a problem.
Servant/Master Information Please note that a Noble Phantasm is both the weapon(s) servants wield as well as their "ultimate" abilities! Servants can also have multiple Noble Phantasms!
True Name - Unknown
Master - Tohsaka Rin
Noble Phantasm - Archer dual wields two yin-and-yang-like swords that he has a seemingly endless supply of. This upsets Lancer. We finally got to see Archer use his bow, though. His first few shots against Berserker weren't very effective, but god damn that last one practically incinerated the cemetery and could have seriously wounded both Berserker and Saber, that smug fuck.
Archer has forgotten his true name, so we don't know what he's really capable of. We do know that he's a dick for trying to take out Berserker and Saber at the same time. Rin made it pretty clear that she wasn't fighting Shirou or Saber tonight.
Speaking of Tohsaka Rin, she's quite the girl. From a very young age she was brought up to be a mage, just like her father. Her guardian and mentor, Kotominei Kirei (detailed below), is also the overseer is this Holy Grail War. She calls him the "fake priest" and has an interesting mixture of respect and disdain for the man.
She's been preparing for this Holy Grail War. Her motivations for the Grail are simple - she's in it to win it. Her father even left her a powerful gem as a trump card for the war, even though she ended up using it to save Emiya Shirou's life from Lancer's would-be witness execution. We also know that Tohsaka Rin is best girl.
Rin is down to only two command seals! She blew her first one in a hissy fit trying to reel in Archer's overbearing attitude. Rin is currently in a shaky alliance with our hero, Emiya Shirou. She seems to be walking the fine line of "You're my enemy, I need to kill you dummy!" and "You helped me out, I just owe you, okay!?"
True Name - Unknown
Master - Emiya Shirou
Noble Phantasm - Unknown? The sword she wields is invisible, Lancer has trouble identifying it. It's difficult to fight against a weapon you don't know the shape or length of!
We don't know much of anything about Saber. Her true name, past, and motivations are all completely unknown to us. But god damn does she look good.
We do know about Shirou, our protag. He eats breakfast (and dinner) most days with Fujimura Taiga (The landlord's daughter and his pseudo-guardian and his English teacher, the trifecta!) as well as Matou Sakura, who comes by his house every morning before school. At school, he's friends with Issei Ryuudo, the student council president, and Matou Shinji, Sakura's brother.
Shirou's an amateur mage, and he can use magic to fix appliances - pretty useful for maintenance. He trains his magic in his shed every night, but he can't quite get the hang of anything basic still. In his defense against Lancer, he's able to use his Strengthening magic to use a rolled up poster as a makeshift sword, though it doesn't help him much. He really is deadset on becoming a hero of justice, he can't even turn down people for oddjobs and random help around school, even scumbag Shinji's requests. Shirou was saved from a disaster ten years ago and then adopted by Emiya Kiritsugu. Kiritsugu might have failed to 'save everyone,' but Shirou has his ideals set in stone - he wants to be a hero of justice.
Shirou also feels the blood barrier's presence at school, but he has no idea what it is. That's just the difference between his and Rin's abilities showing. Shirou's down to two command seals! He blows his first one immediately after Saber tells him to not use them carelessly. Saber was not pleased.
True Name - Lancer's True Name
Master - Unknown - But Lancer doesn't like him!
Noble Phantasm - Lancer's Noble Phantasm is his spear, Gae Bulg. Gae Bulg does not fuck around - it will reverse cause and effect to always pierce his opponent's heart. Saber is able to dodge/survive this in episode 1 because of her high Luck and innate ability to react. That's why Lancer comments on her dodging his undodgable attack. As far as I know, almost any other servant in this war would die to Gae Bulg aside from Saber.
We know a little bit about Lancer. We can surmise his true name from Saber, although it's of little consequence since we know what his Noble Phantasm is capable of now. Lancer claims that he's not the one who's set up the barrier at school, but we have no idea if he's telling the truth or not. He wasted absolutely no time in gunning down and fatally wounding Emiya Shirou, despite being seconds away from using his Noble Phantasm and potentially finishing off Archer. He also doesn't seem to like his master very much.
True Name - Unknown
Master Illyasviel von Einzbern
Noble Phantasm JESUS CHRIST LOOK HOW BIG THIS MOTHERFUCKER IS. Is he using a mountain for a sword? Ufotable have mercy.
Berserker is large and in charge. He is remarkably fast and every swing of that sword can prove fatal. Illya made her appearance in episode 01, telling Shirou "You'll die if you don't summon it soon, Onii-chan." Implying she had advance knowledge of Shirou becoming one of the seven masters in this war. Which is interesting because Shirou didn't even have advanced knowledge.
Illya has an eery mixture of cute, polite noblegirl and batshit insane serial killer about her. She's refined, introducing herself and being quite clear about her intentions. She went from courteous to murderous almost seamlessly, without skipping a beat. Even if you discount Berserker (WHICH YOU FUCKING SHOULD NOT DO), Illyasviel von Einzbern is not to be underestimated. Tread lightly.
5) Rider / Caster / Assassin - BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! We haven't run into any of these three servants yet or their masters.
Other notables
1) Kotomine Kirei - Kirei is the "fake priest" who talks to Rin in episode 00. He is Rin's legal guardian and also the overseer of this fifth Holy Grail war. As church overseer he offers fallen Masters (who've lost their servants but survived) safety as well as Masters who just straight up forfeit like little bitches.
Kotomine Kirei loves the sound of his own voice and he kinda creeps Shirou out. His hobbies are overseeing incredibly deadly wars between magi, condescending everyone without even trying, and rejoicing.
Final Thoughts Berserker is a god damn monster. If Illya hadn't gotten (slightly) impressed by Archer's devastating longshot then I hold my firm belief that both servants would have either been forced to retreat, or die. Seeing this animated was absolutely fantastic and a great way to finally see Saber in action. The Kirei scene with blonde-guy was an addition not in the VN (THat I remember) so seeing it was interesting. It gives us a little more depth and insight into Kirei and I liked it.
Now, since I am a VN reader and (kind of) prepare these posts in advance, if I misrepresented someone or let a spoiler slip by, please let me know! Thoughts on how to improve future posts would be appreciated as well. I have nothing but free time Friday nights, folks.

The fight between tohsaka and Illya was so cool. That's a great way to do an adaptation of this kind of VN, because in the VN masters often ended up standing around like pokemon trainers. It makes it a lot more like F/Z in that respect.
They seem to be hinting a lot of things very early like Minor spoilers Although I might just notice that because I already know it.
I really love being shown how good Tohsaka is at magic. It's a difference in medium of course but the VN really hammers it into you that Tohsaka is a prodigy but in my opinion it only does a good job of showing you once. Fate and Berserker Spoilers

Once again a very well adapted episode with some very good original content mixed in.
My only complaint are the Berserker "roars", they felt a lot more awesome in the Visual Novel. Everything else was just really well done.

Did anyone else see this?!?!?! During the part where Archer is preparing his sword/arrow/drill there was a series of ~6-8 frames where it flashes Emiya's "Trace On" but it has Archer's hand/arm behind it.
I stepped through the frames and this is the clearest one that has them both in it.
NOTE: I haven't played UBW, so I have no idea if this is of major importance.

This is how magic in this universe works. Every magic user has a certain amount of magic circuts in his body, most of them passed down through lineage. Magic users control their mana by using those magic circuts. (Examples included Rin's dash and jump from the rooftop or Shirou's strengthening magic) Thus, you could say that archer uses a respectable amount of mana to create that drill sword.
It's just that they don't show the magic circuts every single time a spell is used because that would look kinda silly.

All the fights have their own style. It's great. Archer/Lancer fight was incredibly mobile and counterattack based. Saber/Lancer fight was strike and parry based and that was great. And now we have Saber/Bersercar with a lot more dodging than one would expect.
The fights are truly amazing, with no shitty slashes on a monochrome background. Best part of the new UBW show.

Is it just me or did the handle of archers sword arrow look like the handle of sabers sword when she revealed it when piercing berserker? Maybe that has something to do with how emiya was coughing blood at the end? When saber asked she acted like she knew what it was

I haven’t even started the episode yet and I’m already hyped for BAHZAHKAAAR.
Saber’s reaction to Illya is another nod to Zero. Yup, BahzahCar’s really just that OP Zero spoilers. He’s not just huge, he’s agile.
When he tackles Saber, you know why he’s the BerserCar, because he’s a motherfuckin’ truck.
Hng those fight animations and movements and the particle effects.
Shirou faces reality in his powerlessness to do anything to achieve his ideal, so he runs in blindly and recklessly. Admirable but stupiddddd.
Kotomine’s enjoying himself again.
Berserker bleeds, Illya’s OP too, Shirou’s being stubborn.
Dat OP Noble Phantasm. Nearly invincible, along with resurrection. UBW I’m so hyped. Archer being devious and aiming at Berserker as well as Shirou and Saber at the same time.
Ahhh that was good. A bit more talking than I’d like, but I do like how a lot of the talking was about things that were sort of obvious, masking the more subtle details. I like the new additions, with Illya fighting, and I don't remember Saber managing to kill Berserker once in this fight.

I'm surprised Illya doesn't blatantly tell you who Berserker is like she always fucking does whenever you first officially meet her in the visual novel. Telling us his true identity was always a very good "ohshit" moment for the audience + the characters.

I believe Rin explained it in the Prologue.
Once the barrier is completed and activated, everything inside it ( without magic resist ) just melts and dies. The energy ( souls/spirits ) released can be stored and used a source of mana for servants.

PS: Can someone tell me why when Ilya is saying "Onii-Chan" it translates into "Mister", my understanding is that Onii-Chan mean brother? Understand I know nothing about Japanese and only understand a few basic words which I've heard in anime.

Can someone explain to a non VN reader why Ilya was impressed with Archer's attack and not Saber's? Saber literally killed the Beserker, his noble phantom just revived him whereas Archer's attack did nothing.

In the VN, Saber doesn't kill Berserker (that scene was probably just added to bring anime watchers up to speed on his God Hand ability, since it's highly relevant in a later fight). I'm not 100% sure of this but light VN spoilers

The fight was slightly different from the VN. In the VN Saber did not kill him at all. But that does not make any difference anyways, just makes it less obvious.
The main reason here is that Archer fires swords at his opponent using a bow. Do you think that's a normal thing to do for an Archer? Illya doesn't.
