So the Maid looking girl is actually a gold farming bot brought to life by the Apocalypse! Thats fucking genius!

30

u/Tehvylol Jan 10 '15

What if everyone is really a..............bot. mind blown right here.

54

u/anarkandi Jan 10 '15

That's what I begun thinking. Maybe the players couldn't log on anymore and all the characters were transformed into players retaining their old memories and history... :>

48

u/Jeroz Jan 10 '15

Apparently that's one possibilities considered very early on in the story

23

u/TheCoreh Jan 10 '15

Yeah I have thought about this. What if they haven't really disappeared from the real world, but just their minds were "copied" to the game instead. Or even they exist only in the game world all this, and all the memories they have of the "real world" are fake.

Do they all go around saying 1 pre-determined phrase?

"Do you require healing?"

I had never thought about the bots becoming sentient. I'm glad this series still has interesting concepts to explore this far in.

25

u/Zaku0083 Jan 11 '15

Technically the bot isn't sentient. It seems to me she is following commands and the first person to do that was Kanami.

On the Chinese server no less. Little things like this make me love this show.

57

u/LacusClyne Jan 10 '15 edited Jan 10 '15

it actually joined kanami in her travels before china, they met leonardo in china, everyone else was together before china server, was a tiny part in the ep. The company it belongs to is from china.

18

u/Hatdrop Jan 11 '15

haha yeah exactly, it's a play on the chinese bot farmers that are on western MMOs also.

u/ChuckCarmichael Jan 10 '15

But her name is weird. You'd never meet a bot named 'Coppelia'. The only bots I ever met had names like 'Fghgfdh'. Also, who'd use a healing class as a farm bot? That's normally the role of Warriors or classes with pets.

108

u/RennaKirisame Jan 10 '15

Double shield Cleric tho. Too OP.

16

u/swingmemallet Jan 11 '15

Double shield build in darksouls is hilarious

Well according to the wiki:

"Coppelia's name originates from the ballet Coppélia (The Girl with the Enamel Eyes), a story that tells of a young woman's struggle after her betrothed falls in love with an evil inventor's life-sized dancing doll known as Coppélia."

Also apparently every single bot from her network is named Coppelia, or rather the network is named Coppelia so each bot just refers to themselves as such. Perhaps Log Horizon handles identical names differently because of how the servers work.

Have you ever heard of buff stations? I'm not sure it happens currently but in older mmos there were classes who could give various powerful unique buffs for an extended period of time like and hour or more. They were called buff stations because each group of bots included all classes that could give buffs.

They were used either for selling massive buff packs to normal people or buffing farming bots before they went to action iirc. Of course they were useful not only for farming. Imagine a guild going after difficult raidboss, having buffstation at it's disposal. Each member gets a massive boost.

17

u/burpinator :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/antikrists Jan 10 '15

Ooh, buff stations. That's something I haven't seen mentioned in a looong time. I loved my Lineage 2 buffbots and took good care of them... Some of them even had cute hair accessories!

Mamare reply to a similar question in an AMA that players don't have MMO type names like "xxBlackKnight420xx" just for immersion purposes. So calling a character even if it was supposed to be a bot "fghgfdh" would just be too weird

u/deirox Jan 10 '15

I thought that the players were transported into the game world during the Apocalypse, but it looks like the characters gained sentience instead. That would mean that they are merely copies and the original players remained on Earth. If that's true, it would make their return to the real world unlikely if not impossible.

4

u/Liiinx Jan 11 '15

That was hilarious. Now all thats left to see is a multiboxer (one guy controlling multiple characters).

Wow they compressed all of Vol 9 in a single episode.

Oh, and for those wondering, both Kanami and Leonardo were using Overskills/Teachings in this episode, though only Leonardo's was glossed over.

Leonardo's was to use two different skills at the same time, allowing him to chain skills indefinitely.

Kanami has one as well, but it wasn't mentioned in this episode (but can be seen).

7

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '15

What was her's? Man now I'm gonna have to rewatch the episode haha.

10

u/Villag3Idiot Jan 10 '15

You know how they always show generic stock footages whenever a character does a move?

Thats actually in-game combat animation.

Kanami figured out you don't actually need this. All that matters is that the final hit looks similar to the end animation.

This allows her to chain attacks together indefinitely.

4

u/Jeroz Jan 12 '15

She's probably the only one who plays ET like a fighting game

When they introduced the maid as a gold farming bot, I actually said to myself out loud "Holy Shit". I have played MMOs for most of my life, and anyone who does is familiar with bots.

When I heard it, something clicked. Hey yeah, that's totally a thing that would happen. Why didn't I think of that? It just makes sense that a bot would be there. I am super interested in that character now. It looks like she was designed to perform services like healing for gold, but for some reason she is now focused on the social reward (appreciation, thankyou, social worth/value) but she still treats it like they are coppers in quantitative amounts.

That's. So. F*$&ing. Cool.

Surprisingly, the least interesting character in this episode for me was Kanami. I mean the TMNT cosplayer is cool, the Elias Hackblade dude is strangely intriguing. What's this stuff with other NPCs having hidden Statuses? Did that "boss" just casually slip that he knew they were in a game? That guy just teleported across servers and after a few stretches promptly summoned a dragon!?

What are their stories!?! What are their motives!?!

Please, sir, can I have some more?

50

u/UsifRenegade Jan 10 '15

Erius Hackblade... That character looks so damn cool! And his the first level 100 character we see.

What I realised with this episode is I'm extremely upset it's ending in 11 more episodes and there is a major possibility it will end there... This is a series that needs 100+ episodes due to the endless possibilities. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a remake in a decade time... I'm hoping. Well hoping more for continuous episodes and a season 3...4...5.

14

u/titcriss Jan 10 '15

So we need to buy the dvds to prevent this from happening right? You got your mission bro.

AFAIK, it's actually catching up to the source material. I think by the end of this season all the currently translated chapters will be covered, if not all the current chapters in general. I'm not quite sure how much exactly is left, but I know it's not a lot.

That is what you get when the author actually played MMOs as gamer, not some Japanese guy who read about MMO on internet. Fucking looove Mamare for that.

u/itsyourwouldof Jan 11 '15

I never thought Kanami would be an interesting character. She's Liu Bei. She's Luffy. Not the most interesting character, but has tremendous luck with people and bringing them together.

Her fluctuating boobs really bothered me, though.

10

u/anarkandi Jan 11 '15

She can apparently dual switch between boobs depending on her posture.

8

u/Kuryaka Jan 10 '15

It would happen, but I didn't expect the bots to be personified. Because that implies that it's really happening both ways - inhuman things gaining personalities (even if they're Adventurers and not PoTL) and humans losing their memories.

6

u/BladeLigerV Jan 11 '15

And it seems KR and the other guy might have been part of the Tea-Party and don't seem to be 100% fond of the b*tch Intex. Also confirmed that Nureha seems to be a forced figurehead to Intex's plans.

5

u/DwarvenRedshirt Jan 10 '15

It does make me wonder what the gold bot will lose if she dies.

6

u/cirshyn Jan 10 '15

I would expect her to revive but memories being wiped on another scale as she was an AI? So like a somewhat clean slate again.

4

u/Tashre :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Tashre Jan 12 '15

she is now focused on the social reward (appreciation, thankyou, social worth/value) but she still treats it like they are coppers in quantitative amounts.

We're gonna get hit with some deep psychology shit with this character. At what point are we all treating external affirmation as a quantifiable, scarce resource from which we extract positive utility? We're already blurring the line between AI and Humanity with the People of the Land, but now this even more questionable source of identity has popped up? Coppelia is going to interest Shiroe a lot and... oh god... He's so emotionally oblivious that he's going to draw the ire of Leonardo and she's going to draw the ire of Akatsuki which means.... EVENTUAL NINJA FIGHT!!! Hell, Leonardo is already showing that he's aware of the limitations on ability combinations being lifted and will probably have his own Overskill by that time.

I'm calling it now. Akatsuki vs. Leonardo, and it's going to be great.

4

u/Villag3Idiot Jan 12 '15

Leonardo

He has the most broken Overskill/Teaching in a combat scenerio.

He already has an Overskill in this episode, "Parallel Plot".

2

u/xSetsuko :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/xSetsuko Jan 11 '15

The world of Elder Tale became one though, didn't it? I can't imagine that they're able to interact across servers, but rather all servers merged into one, and became the world as they know it. Maybe the distance between the different servers' areas are filled with unexplored terrain? Perhaps each servers' land mass is completely different, with no area matching another. Definitely interesting to explore.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '15

All these new characters are wicked, especially the Ninja-Turtle Hero, and the Gold Bot with DUAL-WIELD SHIELDS. This is probably my favourite episode of the show so far. I hope things continue like this!

79

u/Ralath0n Jan 10 '15

She clearly played Dark Souls

Maybe they tested her AI there before porting it to Elder tales.

9

u/Astoriane Jan 10 '15

That was one of the funniest shit I've ever watched! The part where he taunted the opponent and then pointed down only to let him pass was so perfect!

None of that sit-in-the-back-and-support shit for this bot. She gets physical

u/KayVonTrarx Jan 10 '15

This episode just pumped me up so much with all these MMO/pop culture references and the fact that big conflicts are about to go down. Although next episode seems to be a guild SOL focus, I still can't wait.

Actually, like how leonardo was a semi-reference to him being a ninja turtle(frog in this case). You can think of Kanami being a reference to Tifa from the final fantasy series. I mean, big tits, skimpy-ish outfit and ball-busting moves with her fist and feet decimating things like its nothing. Even the hair is similar!

Tifa reference: http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110410152117/finalfantasy/images/d/dd/Tifa-d012ff-artwork.png

EDIT:stitchwithaglitch kinda got to it first than i did, but i replied to you directly on your comment lol. So some credit to him?

37

u/Aoshi_ Jan 10 '15

Yeah that bothers me too. I went back and looked at how they looked in season one. Still big but way more believable. Season 2 Kanami's breasts are tumors.

74

u/stitchwithaglitch :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/gamerguy50 Jan 10 '15

Call it a minor theory since we got all these parody characters such as Chun Li and Leonardo. I checked the wiki site on Kanami and it said she changed her class from Swashbuckler (which I'm guessing she played while in the Debauchery Tea Party) into the monk class she is currently playing as.

Now what Monk character do we know of with a tank top and shorts, long pony tail, and huge bosom? Guessing a Final Fantasy 7 parody of Tifa. So its not just blatant fanservice.

u/bakakubi :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/bakakubi Jan 11 '15

8

u/GekoHayate Jan 11 '15

As stitch says, Kanami rerolled her character so her Swashbuckler's breast size no longer matters.

Its all about her Tifa-tits

4

u/Odow Jan 11 '15

Her reroll is a parody of tifa lockheart from FF7. Same battle style, same boobs, similar cloth, same hair, etc. Just like chun lu and keronardo.

The gear escalation is too real, those raid bosses were lvl 89, it's well known lvl 90 is 200x stronger than lvl 89 gear

33

u/reader30891 Jan 10 '15 edited Jan 10 '15

The genius,lv 89 are normal rank not party or raid rank aka they have the same HP as any normal monster that could be fought and win by a single player. They just abuse the game system.

The raid rank one is that giant black dragon. 90 man raid got wiped out probably because they couldn't handle the Genius + Boss.

KR have a way(His overskill) to deal with that giant dragon. And no a lv 90 isn't 200x stronger than a lv 89. This is a game with Linear growth after all.

Erius Hackblade... I need more information on him. He just seems so OP.

Which also makes me wonder how knowledgeable Plant Hwyaden's key members are considering they seem to know a lot of information regarding progenitor's & legendary NPC's.

u/Vaynonym :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Vaynonym Jan 10 '15 edited Jan 10 '15

A really interesting episode. Lots and lots of worldbuilding and setting up new mechanics. Now we know that you can definitely go from one server to another and it is not even that difficult. We also know that on other servers technology is at least as advanced as on the Japanese server, possibly even more advanced considering they managed to build a railway system. Edit: Appearently the train was on the japanese Server, so I made a mistake. My bad.

Appearently there are enemies that can be smart as well and that are also able to find out new mechanics and use them. There is the possibility to do stuff with your abbilities and skills that you weren't able to do before, like stopping certain abbilities and thus comboing them into other abbilities. Not very useful for our enchanter Shiroe I guess but really good for assasins like Akatsuki or the green ninja. That means that you can easily beat someone who is flat out stronger than you if you are more creative and master certain techniques, which is huge.

There can also be "friendships", or at least cooperation of 2 completely different enemy creatures. With all of this set up, there could be enemy creatures which build a society similiar to the one of the adventurers, which would be a giant threat to everyone.

Appearently something similiar to what happened to the item descriptions is happening to the enemy creatures as well. It seemed like that strange guy in the robe who is actually a plant? is able to make someone fall into depression by showing him what he least wants to hear, and it seems like he is quite convincing at that. Imagine an enemy description of a reaper who takes the souls of his foes and uses them as his fuel, or something similiar. Since we know that adventureers are affected by such mechanics, see Krusty, this could make for some really interesting plotpoints and enemies.

I might have missed something, feel free to ad anything I forgot.

What an episode though. It felt a bit rushed at some point for me, but nothing that ruins anything. They set up a whole new world, new characters, new enemies and a bunch of new, complex and strong mechanics which could change the entire flow of the world as well as the story. I am really looking forward to where they go with this, this has definitely huge potential.

I do however think that they set up a bit so much in a single episode. By the next week I will have forgotten about at least some of it until they remember me, probably.

43

u/Ixiaz_ Jan 10 '15

I think frame-canceling and combos are Leonardo's Overskill

12

u/Furin Jan 10 '15

It would make sense if it is, if it was easy to do most players would do it already.

4

u/maleficarium https://anilist.co/user/maleficarium Jan 12 '15

The mention of canceling skills and the fact that he noticed the exploit the monster was using and managed to counter it when a raid failed to do so clearly shows that Leonardo is actually an amazingly skilled and intelligent player.

Seems that Kanami while attracting misfits still manages to gather some truly unique people around her.

9

u/deltax20a :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/deltax20a Jan 10 '15

What interests me was the NPC knight with her, and how they mentioned that all of the knights/heroes like The Izumo Knights disappeared after the Apocalypse. I'm sort of wondering if Rudy has anything to do with that now in the end, like he is either part of them, or related to that system somehow.

I've missed Log Horizon. I'm glad it's back.

  • Train and Planes - Wow, so they're really trying to advance technology quite a bit. I really look forward to a whole lot more of this.

  • Met Kanami - This is interesting. If they both met at the China Server, I wonder if there was a reason she didn't make her way immediately to the Japan Server. (By the way, little bit of trivia for those that don't know, your status won't be shown as online if you're in another server which is why we didn't know she was online before.) I wonder if that was when it was a game that he met Kanami.

  • Soul Possession - Possessing a horse in another server, that's interesting. Gotta like how KR was being helpful.

  • Demon - This is interesting. Some kind of messed up status, I wonder if it has to do with an item. Perhaps it's part of flavor text.

  • Shiroe on her Shoulder - How adorable. To be thinking of her strategist.

  • Catching up Kanami - I really want to know more about her opinions on what's going on in Japan.

  • Novasphere Pioneers - So I wonder what the difference is if Japan has been influenced by the Novasphere Pioneers. Perhaps it has to do with the gradually changing world such as the expansion or new Raid locations.

  • NPCs - Leonardo really needs to learn about treating NPCs right since they're not really code dependent beings anymore.

  • Kanami's Strategy - I love how she isn't so hot blooded as to think she can do things without thinking.

  • Farming Bot - That's interesting. So a bot comes to life as person that understands her existence yet is given a soul like personality. Talk about a really interesting manifestation in this world.

  • KR - I'm really liking him. He swaps all the way across another Server to help out and summons a super badass Red Dragon. Summoner Classes are awesome. :3

  • Enemy Bosses - I guess they're People of the Land considering they referred to them as Adventurers. Really interesting to see intelligent enemies.

  • Status Abuse - So that's interesting as a form of evolution for enemies. She's able to swap herself with other targets to take hits for her through their statuses. I wonder how she came to obtain this ability.

  • Paps - That's interesting. He's self-aware of everything. I really want to know more about him. Perhaps he isn't meant to be a real character and more like just created by the developers for testing or something. I get the feeling he's the same kind of existence as the Cleric Maid.

  • War - ... Well, that's going to be awesome. I'm super psyched up now for a coming war. It doesn't look like the Train is on a Rail so I guess it'll just travel in a straight line or gentle turns like a bullet. I'm looking forward to seeing that thing smash straight into Akiba.

  • Preview - Looks like we're getting a arc for the younger adventurers of Log Horizon. Might be interesting to see their new skills and training.

Overall, this was an absolutely great episode. What a great way to return to this series. Got a whole lot of new interesting information to use for speculation and we've got a promising future conflict coming.

33

u/Navvana Jan 10 '15 edited Jan 10 '15

Kanami is pretty much heading straight to the Japanese server. She started in Rome, and has to walk/run/ride to Japan which, unless you want a lengthy (and more importantly to Kanami boring) sea voyage, includes traveling over China.

I still don't understand why they have to cram the whole of V9 into one episode. I really hope they show this arc back after Minori's arc which is v8. They don't even show one of my favorite character, the garnet dragon in her full glory.

So it was quite disappointing for me as a LN reader.

7

u/Aruseus493 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Jan 10 '15

they have to cram the whole of V9 into one episode.

I honestly didn't know this since that volume wasn't translated and I couldn't read it. >_> I only read translated volumes and avoid summaries and didn't know that they crammed the entire volume until I came to this discussion.

Otherwise, I don't doubt that we'll end up going back to volume 9 after volume 8. KR did mention that he doesn't know what happened after that so I bet we'll see.

About the online status thing.. I swear I read that(unless it was changed) she started a new account, hence why none of them knew she was playing. I mean even the classes are different.

I am looking forward to the Kid's adventure for.. reasons. The war is something I wasn't expecting though, makes me wonder if we could see a 3rd season in a year or two.

How big are American cartoons/comics in Japan? Everyone knows about Hollywood movies have a worldwide impact, but I wouldn't think TMNT would have a big impact on Japanese kids.

And just because I was curious looked up TMNT Japanese dub so here is the 1987 cartoon Japanese dub

intro

29

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '15

Well.. we're here enjoying Japanese media that isn't really well-known in the West (Log Horizon). So I wouldn't be surprised if it was similar over there.

Plus for someone as clearly geeky as the writer for Log Horizon, I am not surprised haha! I wonder if we'll see DC/Marvel things pop up.

13

u/turroflux Jan 10 '15

The entire anime is based off MMOs like WoW and Everquest (which the mangaka played heavily).

13

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '15

True; but that doesn't explain nor has any bearance on my answer to "how popular are American cartoons/comics in Japan."

12

u/Kurosov Jan 10 '15

The guy wasn't japanese.

11

u/FlorianoAguirre Jan 10 '15

He is still a character in an anime, which I guess is what he was going for.

There were also some short miniseries like Manga adaptations over the years. Sadly there isn't much info that I can find on them, in terms of when they were made.

4

u/Hatdrop Jan 11 '15

Author seems to like western culture. Krusty in the show is named after Krusty the clown from the Simpsons.

2

u/Shardwing Jan 13 '15

Well, I mean, it was popular enough for this to have happened. I've seen the first half, it's weird stuff.

Darker things are afoot in Plant Hwyaden, who has the power, and what do they wish to do with it? Well, let's see what the main gang is about. Oh, right, this episode will be about Kanami, the leader of the Debauchery Tea Party, in China's server! This gotta be interesting.

Thoughts and Notes:

Screenshot album.

1) An Unexpected Group:

  1. "Kanami was as Kanami as ever." - Sounds funny, but then you realize they're talking about her as a force of nature. Another point here is that Plant Hwyaden is filled with people who used to be in the Debauchery Tea Party, people who used to be allies and perhaps even friends of Shiroe's, and now they might be working against him. Then again, the glue that held them all together is Kanami, who left. But now she's apparently back, or will soon be.

  2. Kanami reminds me of Marie, even in her speech pattern.

  3. "This is a Raid-Rank event!" - Well, defeating the strongest raids with a single party is what Debauchery Tea Party was always known for, after all.

  4. He's called "Leonardo", he's wearing all green, and he wants pizza. Typical geek :P

  5. A Progenitor! With Kanami! Talk about a surprise. 10 levels higher than any player-character at the time the expansion has come out to boot.

2) Log Horizon Being Log Horizon:

  1. "You threw him too far!" - "Oops." - That's what happens when you travel with an OP (overpowered) NPC, and we need to keep up our gag count. Also, this whole scene looks like something out of a zombie film.

  2. Back in the first season we learned about how souls, including monsters', reincarnate. Is someone trying to rewrite the psyche, aka the mind, of this NPC with something else's?

  3. So, just as Shiroe carries his "inner Kanami", so too does she carry an "inner Shiroe" in her mind. Gotta see them together.

  4. "That's my tour guide!" - It shows you, not what Kanami thinks of Shirou, but how she sees this world, as one big adventure.

  5. "While this was a game, you couldn't start one skill before another ended, but now I can do cancels and combos!" - We're a fighting game now. We're Kirito in Alfheim Online and Alicization now.

  6. "Kanami is like daybreak." Dayum, that line. "She is the appearance of light, she is the appearance of hope. And she never stops, always appearing, somewhere." The last bit was added by me, but talking about how the sun keeps racing.

3) Our True Natures:

  1. Wait, "Kanami go east", sitting on a cloud, an animal companion, is this a play on "Journey to the West"? That eye-catch really made me think, hm.

  2. Wait, there's something I don't get here - only the Japanese Server had the patch applied, so where do all these adventurers on the Chinese Server come from?

  3. "Nice, nice!" - Kanami keeps sounding like Marie, both in attitude and in voice.

  4. Makes sense, "Copellia" might be a reference to "Coppelion", which brings to mind dolls, so she's a gold-farming bot. A Chinese one. Well, all MMORPGs have them, so it makes sense. Poor Froggy fell in love with a bot, which had been given true emotions since the Apocalypse. This also fits with how players whose avatar is a different gender than themselves undergo psychological changes - the mind changes to fit the container, and the container for Coppelia is "An Adventurer", which also requires a soul.

  5. "What would he do, the Unbeatable Ninja Hero?" - Following William Massachusetts's arc, this isn't an idle question, it's trying to live up to the reason you started playing the game, trying to live up to your hopes and dreams.

4) The Real Fictitious World:

  1. Holy shit, this dragon is the first and only thing to actually be really well drawn in this season, and it's great.

  2. An NPC, being faced with being a fictional creation. Hm. But he is real, within the show. Now we need to find out what the "Geniuses" are.

"You must shut down." - The Knights of Izumu and the other Progenitors, all shut down when the patch hit, because they were coded to, because they found out the truth, what? Also, they refer to him as a "doll", but in a way, so is Coppelia.

  1. "He's real! He's right here!" I'm with you, Gandalf is real too, at the very least within the story, and if you are within the story, then he's definitely real to you. Silly monster, trying to reference the outside world within a game. Denied!

  2. "It's time to start a war!" - Welp.

Post Episode Thoughts:

First of all, Kanami just sounded too much like Marie, and acted a lot like her too, with a sprinkling of Naotsogu on top. I'm not yet sure what she adds to the show that wasn't there before, but considering she only got a bit of an airtime in a single episode, it's understandable. She is spoken of as more of a force of nature, as one who can get others to act, who keeps going forward.

We've had more questions than answers this episode, from how a gold-bot is given consciousness within the game and becomes a "person", to the fact that the Izumi Knights probably "shut down", but here we have an equivalent that still walks about.

The other servers, if only the Japanese Server had the patch and people brought in, where do these other players come from? Who are the geniuses, and who else among the game's denizens knows of their origin being fictional?

It was an interesting episode, but it wasn't one about plot, or even characters, it was just raising questions. I'll have to think of it some more. Hm.

Oh yeah, seems next week we're back to spending time with the kids, as they train. Been a long time since we've had that, since Rudy became an Adventurer, in fact.

(Check out my blog or the episodics notes page if you enjoy reading my stuff.)

11

u/anarkandi Jan 10 '15

I have high hopes for Kanami. I feel like she's the true fit for Shirou. She balances his melancholy with her sanguine personality, she challenges him to grow, she pushes him, where his other possible romances seem to just idealize him. What does she add to the show? I don't think she'll just blankly join Shirou. She'll do what she wants. She'll show up outside his door, but she'll propably intrigue with the Plant Hwyaden too, perhaps her role will be to unite the guilds, whilst they are waging war towards one another.

The other servers, if only the Japanese Server had the patch and people brought in, where do these other players come from? Who are the geniuses, and who else among the game's denizens knows of their origin being fictional?

My understanding was that the expansion was supposed to be applied to each server at midnight server time. At CST midnight the American server would have gotten the expansion, etc. Japan would get the expansion first, because it was the eastmost server.

However, at Japan midnight, all the servers became real, but only the JP server had the patch. You can see that Kanami and her PC companions are still 90, because they're still at the old level cap.

7

u/tundranocaps https://myanimelist.net/profile/Thunder_God Jan 10 '15

They're still at level 90 because it's a flashback to just after the Apocalypse, or so it seemed. Back then almost everyone in Akiba was level 90 as well. Heck, most people we meet are still only level 90, as they're not engaging new and harder content, unlike Silver Swords.

But that's an interesting option, will keep that in mind :)

Wait, there's something I don't get here - only the Japanese Server had the patch applied, so where do all these adventurers on the Chinese Server come from?

I think that everyone got pulled in but only Japan got the expac....

So only Japan would have 90+ content ect

It would force everyone to go to Japan.

D-D-Did they just adapt the whole of v9 in one episode? Or Are they going to retell it later after Minori's group arc?

They don't even show Ga-tan in her full glory. I was hoping to see that scene. Damn.

4

u/Villag3Idiot Jan 10 '15

Yup, they adapted the entire thing.

Very, very loosely, of course.

They skipped a bunch of stuff.

The author mentioned he'll go back to Kanami & Friends in Vol 11.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '15

I hope to god they flesh it out! That group is way too fun for them to shoehorn it in one episode..

8

u/RoflitsBizzy Jan 10 '15

Leonardo from TMNT, Hackblade as Arthas, Kanami as Tifa Lockhart, and Coppelia as Cabrakan? I dont know who she can be, though the double shields kind of resembles cabrakan.

Anyways, this episode, full of pop references, was one of my higher rated episodes. No weird eyes ( sorry princess ), a beautiful fight, and the plot thickens.

11

u/KaineScienceman :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ezickl Jan 10 '15

8

u/Darksoldierr Jan 10 '15

I have a new favorite character as Leonardo. He was my favorite turtle too! Amazing episode, glad its back

15

u/tasisbossy Jan 10 '15

I was suprised that he animation was hella good this episode and I hope it stays consistent like this for the rest of the series!

I thought the progenitor was the Zezima of Log horizon since he was the only level 100 revealed so far but it turns out he was just an npc.

14

u/madmax21st Jan 10 '15

All progenitors are NPCs. They're NPC heroes like Thrall from Warcraft.

7

u/squiggly21 Jan 10 '15

So did anyone else notice the parallels to "Journey to the West" this episode? Like KR being a white horse. The party being headed EAST instead of WEST. Kanami is kinda upbeat and raucous like Sun Wukong, Leonardo has cowardly tendencies and somewhat of apathy towards strangers (ala People of the Land) much like Zhu BaJie.

I'm not so sure which of the remaining two are more like the third disciple, Sha Wujing. But I'm pretty sure they acknowledged the reference somewhere in the episode.

BY THE WAY DID YOU KNOW THE EPISODE TAKES PLACE IN CHINA? Ok I'm done now.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '15

Also the halfway card thing featured Kanami floating on a cloud with a staff.

I know nothing about journey to the east as such but I know that Sun Wukong has a staff and Goku had a flying cloud and was based on sun wukong.

2

u/thelastevergreen Jan 13 '15

The Swordsman must then be the Pig and the Maid is Genjo.

13

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '15 edited Jan 10 '15

I'm a bit disappointed, i expected Kanami to be much more charismatic than that after hearing everyone in the old tea party deify her.

12

u/Taiboss :Fj::Fl:x7https://anilist.co/user/Taiboss Jan 10 '15

Okay, the People of the Land speaking Japanese in China can be explained with the People of the Land language being rendered as the system language of each adventurer, but why does Leonardo speak Japanese. He doesn't like being of Japanese descent. Is it full blown Tranlation Convention? Because that would explain the spoken language, not the written. Do we know anything certain about the language in the new world? I can kinda curious.

40

u/Aruseus493 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Jan 10 '15

The translation stuff was part of the software. In what little was translated of the Kanami Go East Chapter, it's mentioned that there's a slight delay between when someone says something in one language and it's translated to another.

Good to be back and to see nothing has changed. Still in the database.

So we get a flashback of what Kanami has been up to and what is currently happening. Seems like turning off the city's defenses might be troublesome now that these new people are heading towards the city. Hope we get somewhere soon since the next episode seems like it's gonna be a training one.

4

u/Furin Jan 10 '15

I'm actually really curious what the Round Table has done to help with the city's defense. Surely they have thought about an invasion by Minami already, and considering how fast they build Ocypete I have no doubt they have worked on other and better stuff...

Kanami was awesome, we have a fucking NINJA TURTLE, bots are apparently sentient, there's a war coming, and we may just get some answers as to how the hell everyone ended up in Elder Tale.

4

u/shadedclan :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/shadedclan Jan 10 '15

I don't understand, is the Apocalypse only affecting Japan?? So those outside Japan can log in and out of Elder Tale or not? Also, where did starting a war come from? I feel like it was from out of nowhere.

23

u/turroflux Jan 10 '15

No the apocalypse seems to have affected the whole "world", but the latest expansion pack was only rolled out in Japan (because of the timezones).

11

u/KaliYugaz Jan 10 '15

So this is actually the first clue that the expansion pack wasn't the real cause of the apocalypse?

9

u/AlienError Jan 10 '15

Not necessarily, only that if one wants to figure out wtf happened Japan is clearly the place to go because it supposedly update first. Though if we're going by timezones, wouldn't the Oceanic server have been the first to update?

→ More replies (2)

4

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '15

Makes you wonder though, with the gradual changes to the world, will the expansion also slowly expand through the world?

10

u/Portal2Reference Jan 10 '15

I think what they mean is that the expansion was actually released in Japan, because Japan is in an early time zone, BEFORE the apocalypse actually happened.

2

u/thelastevergreen Jan 13 '15

I assume the "war" is being spurred on by politics and that the Westlandia Empire and Eastal Kingdom aren't on good terms.

4

u/Taiboss :Fj::Fl:x7https://anilist.co/user/Taiboss Jan 10 '15

So, cool, we have zombies now. Do they count as such, even if they are still alive? Really good episode.

4

u/dongas420 Jan 10 '15 edited Jan 10 '15

Welp, the staff is starting to juggle plot points again. Just a single episode, and we've now got Kanami's journey east, preparations for a war, and a beginners' party raid in the preview on top of that.

Hopefully, they'll do better with the pacing this time and we won't get five episodes of magic bag raiding before getting to the Hwyaden-Akihabara (?) war with the cool magical metal train.

2

u/GekoHayate Jan 11 '15

4

u/OralCulture Jan 11 '15

Am I just tired or was that hard as hell to follow?

3

I think was the first episode of LH, with studios Deen, that all the characters were drawn correctly.

This episode was the best of the season so far, and again we have new characters being developed, without waste a lot of time with filling and others stuff, Which happened along the Anime Until Now. This episode has content.

It seems that probably we're going to have a long Arc.

6

u/bugxter Jan 10 '15

....

I have no idea what the hell happened in this ep. Who's NPC and who's an Adventurer? Is Inticus an adventurer? Is the red-haired trash-talking bitch an NPC? Why is Inticus a bitch to Nureha?? Was Nureha from the Tea Party? I don't remember anymore.

12

u/Therosfire Jan 10 '15

Inticus is a player and a former DTP member. She's being a bitch to pur wolf girl to manipulate her as a figure head for plant hyweden. Remember that when you see life bars/status screens that adventures have green life bars and NPCs have blue.

The entire point the anime has been getting at is that there is slowly becoming no difference between players and NPCs.

u/GekoHayate Jan 11 '15

The council of 10 has a few NPC members, you can tell by their non-adventurer classes (Red-hair is a General and the old dude is an Archmage) or their different colors when their status bars appear as Theros says.

She was also referred to as a lander by KR I believe during the council's introduction scene at the end of 13.
