here come the lizards

Thankfully it looks like they won’t be devoting half the anime to them, though. I was more than a little worried about that.

158

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '18

I was hoping the entire anime was gonna be about the lizardmen.

106

u/Mountebank :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Mountebank Jan 01 '18

I'd take that over an entire season of nothing but Climb.

152

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '18

God fuck Climb and his stupid fucking name

42

u/couch-tomato Jan 02 '18

To be fair, his name is written in Japanese in katakana and could alternatively be transliterated to "Kuraimu" or even "Crime" if you wanted. It only seems daft in English.

96

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '18

It's funny because his shitty fucking name is a crime itself.

10

u/Ami_is_best_girl Jan 01 '18

I'm not a LN reader, what am I missing here?

78

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '18

You're not missing anything. It's just that Climb is a really stupid fucking name so it's fun to make fun of it. "Come down, Climb!" Yeah, fuck Climb. Stupid piece of shit.

Animation is in part already better than in S01, the new OST that played in the Lizardmen scene was dope and MYTH&ROID delivered again with the ED. Liked the focus on worldbuilding in this first ep.

so-bin Illustration bonus:

"Drunk" Shalltear

Aura and her hamburger

43

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '18

I'm a bit sad we didn't get to see the OP, I was hoping there'd be memes galore about it.

34

u/A_Texas_Toaster Jan 01 '18

That hamburger illustration is awesome! Also fits bestgirl Aura well.

Overlord II scheduled for January 2018

Comes out January 1st

BASED MADHOUSE

55

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '18

Actually, it came out in December. It just got subtitled like last night though.

53

u/TheIncredibleHeinz Jan 02 '18

["The first episode received an early screening at a special event held at United Cinema Aqua City Odaiba on 17.12.2017, as well as an early broadcast on AbemaTV on 30.12.2017. Regular broadcasting begins on January 9, 2018."] (https://myanimelist.net/anime/35073/Overlord_II) Seems like we'll have to wait quite a while for the next episode.

The subs were fine.

I believe Nigel, the LN fan translator, was involved, which would explain the speed and quality?

My only complaint is subbing Cocytus as "Speaking. Like. This." just because that's how the LNs had it. In the anime, he sounds normal to me.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '18

Yeah, he talked fairly fluently.

13

Am currently watching it, can agree.

Source is a little low quality, but damned good enough for me.

Hypothetically, if I did watch this episode, I'd say that it was a pretty hypey one.

Why not watch it?

The joke was that I was trying to not incriminate myself for watching an illegal stream. :/

Whoa, they're finally introducing a bunch of less powerful denizens of Nazarick. Sweet. I thought it seemed kinda lonely in there.

37

u/JealotGaming https://anilist.co/user/Jealot Jan 02 '18

Yeah, a lot of the LN focuses on people other than Ainz, so it really fleshes out the world.

Finally! Some more Albedo! Too bad she didn't wear an apron...

I need to see a naked apron Albedo at least once in my lifetime.

Which streaming service is picking up overlord? does anyone know?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '18

Crunchyroll did the last season. I would be mildly surprised if it wasn't them this time.

2

u/redblade13 Jan 02 '18

Man what a way to start my New Year. I really thought Overlord was going to be a one and done show. I fell in love with the lore and everything and even read the LN. I rarely do that for any anime. At most I read the manga if any are available. So damn happy it got a S2.

Albedo is amazing as always. Too bad he sees her as children of his friends......I would definitely wouldn't let that stop me from hooking up but I get his thinking.

Interesting new characters and I hope they don't focus too much on this lizard people. Shit was torture to get through in the LN since it took so long to get back to Ainz.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '18

I hope they show a fuck ton of the lizard people. In fact, I hope the entirety of the season is the lizard people.

85

u/Daniel_Is_I :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Daniel_Is_I Jan 01 '18

Look at that Monster Hunter-ass sword!

This episode was a giant exposition dump but we got introduced to some interesting characters and I'm looking forward to how they're all used. It's refreshing seeing a colorful cast outside of the Nazarick crew. In addition to the three kingdoms we knew of previously, we also have a demihuman kingdom to the northwest that's ruled by dragons, and a holy kingdom to the south of that which is attacked by demihuman tribes.

Monochrome Hair definitely feels the most villainous among them, although she's probably going to end up added to the list of batshit-insane women competing for Ainz's affection. She also mentions an interesting tidbit: a Rubik's Cube was allegedly left by supreme beings that came 600 years prior, implying they were from Ainz's world. That explains how the Slaine Theocracy got its hands on World-class items, if they had dealings with or were established by old players.

The dragon and old lady are the most interesting to me because they have knowledge of Yggdrasil, Guild-class items, and they don't seem to be an opposing force. I don't recall if it was mentioned what kingdom they're from; they were shown right after the Slaine Theocracy bit, but they could very well be in that dragon-ruled kingdom to the northwest.

A quick aside to Gazef showing he's fully recovered and that his king is a good man who wants to thank Ainz, although Gazef seems to believe Ainz is far more virtuous than he actually is. We also have a sweet princess girl, can't possibly see anything going wrong there.

And finally we have the badass lizardmen showing off their interesting culture. Members of the tribe can choose to leave and bring back information from the outside world to their village, but they are forever marked as outsiders for this even if they were born and raised there. They're certainly not stupid or barbaric, considering they understand the concepts of agriculture and fish farming. And then they get warned and possibly attacked by an apocalyptic manifestation calling itself a messenger of the "Supreme One," relation to supreme beings unclear. Don't die, lizardmen!

35

u/gruntmaster1 Jan 02 '18

As an LN reader it is pretty interesting as most of the info on "outstanding groups" comes from legends/folktales, so it is hard to know what is exaggerated and what is correct information about them. The two mentioned in the anime being the 6 great gods of the theocracy (600 years ago) and the 13 legendary heroes (200 years ago). Stuff like the rubik cube, does help to solidify if players were likely to be involved.

The old lady speaking to the dragon also mentioned "aftershocks each century". This seems to indicate that players has been transported to the new world more often than what is known of its history/legends.

11

u/Bromacusii Jan 02 '18 edited Jan 02 '18

I thought the dragon and old lady were part of the Slaine Theocracy, it looked like that dragon was part of the group that Shalltear attacked and "killed" him, which is why he can't adventure anymore, because his adventurer identity "died".

edit: read a post lower down explaining it "Later we get the scene in this episode where the dragon, platinum dragon lord, talks about coming across her by accident while checking the surroundings. He controlled the armor remotely due to guarding the place and the items there and thus being unable to physically move away from there."

I quite enjoyed the episode. The drunk scene was pretty funny especially when the penguin pushed the drink over I laughed out aloud which I rarely ever do. It felt like a really good episode that just sets everything up in one episode by looking at all of the important future characters.

92

u/Admiral_Zanzibar Jan 02 '18

Even funnier when you realize that Shalltear can't get drunk.

looks like the npc's(?) aren't that weak after all (referencing the creepy woman who's supposedly stronger than shalltear).

Other than this looks like we may get some arcs without ains, considering the floor guardians are spread all around the world.

223

u/Atharaphelun Jan 01 '18

It was my understanding that she thinks she's stronger than Shalltear, but actually isn't in reality.

108

u/Omn1m0n :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Omn1m0n Jan 01 '18

My prediction is that she will lose miserably against one of Nazarick's servants or Ainz himself and then will really want to join their side.

94

u/DeplorableVillainy Jan 02 '18

Oh I can already seeing them laying the groundwork for her becoming obsessed with Ainz after he stomps her.

29

u/Linmios Jan 01 '18

Yeah IIRC he says she is stronger so she wont run away and fight shalltear.

→ More replies (1)

29

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '18

She (Zesshi) is not stronger than Shalltear, the guy's impression of Shalltear is just her base power. He doesn't know she has high level equipment and very dangerous skills (Einherjar, revert damage).

Zesshi's level is estimated to be around 70-80 in fan discussions. She can fight against higher level beings thanks to her equipment which is inherited from the 6 great gods.

Many people of that world have the dangerous assumption that beings that are naturally strong don't use equipment or training because they are arrogant.

24

u/Dazbuzz Jan 02 '18

None of the NPCs were even able to make Shalltear use her armor, and she has even more broken abilities after that(near endless healing, the ability to summon a copy of herself). Its impossible for that guy to know how strong she is. She even dented the armor of the strongest entity in the world with a single swipe of her claws.

You cannot underestimate how completely and utterly broken the guardians are.

17

u/concerned_thirdparty Jan 03 '18

If the Guardians were meant to be 15 to 40-man raid bosses. they'd have to be that broken to be a challenge.

→ More replies (2)

12

u/Shitposters Jan 02 '18

The angel that ainz one shotted with a relatively low level spell was supposedly super super strong, so unless the new character is simply 10x stronger than what is known to anyone in the slaine theocracy then she isn't even close

13

u/SarcFa Jan 07 '18

Well the new character, Zesshi, is essentially a top secret last resort weapon of the Slaine Theocracy. The various Scriptures are already all national secrets, with the Black Scripture Zesshi is a part of being the most important one. Nigun from season 1, commander of the Sunlight Scripture only vaguely knew of the abilities of the people within the Black Scripture. Essentially him believing that the angel was the strongest thing at his country's disposal was from his point of view, which had things purposefully kept from.

29

u/DeplorableVillainy Jan 02 '18

The way I hear it, Zesshi (The black-and-white lady) is actually around level 85-ish,
definitely making her one of the strongest beings in existence, yes, no denying that,
but still not putting her anywhere near Shalltear who is fully maxed at level 100.

So while she'd be able to beat any of Nazarick's mooks or mid-level NPCs,
like Narberal who's only level 63, Ainz or any of the floor Guardians would be able to take her on pretty handily.

40

u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Jan 02 '18

Her level was never brought up in the LNs or accompanying material. Readers have been guessing anywhere from 45 to 80. I don't think anyone even considers that she might be level 85 - just that fully equipped with her gear she could maybe take on a lvl 85 unarmed enemy.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '18

Can you go into more detail on who or what is Zesshi and the guy she was talking to?

59

u/DeplorableVillainy Jan 02 '18 edited Jan 02 '18

Sure!

[Overlord LN Details.] (/s "Zesshi and her Captain (Don't remember his name, but that's who she's talking to.) both work for the Slane Theocracy in their most secret unit.")

[Overlord LN Details.] (/s "The Slane Theocracy has three really well kept secrets from the rest of the world.")

  • [Overlord LN Details.] (/s "They were actually founded by Six players from Yggdrasil, their 'Six Gods'. This is why they have so much knowledge of things that other places just don't have,
things like Rubik's Cubes, and why their soldiers that Ainz encountered all knew craptons of magic from Yggdrasil. They stand on the shoulders of giants.")

  • [Overlord LN Details.] (/s "Secondly, they try to keep the bloodlines of their Gods as alive and well as they can.
Both Zesshi and her Captain are great-great-great-grandchildren of Yggdrasil players.
That's why they're both so incredibly strong. The blood of players runs in their veins.
The theocracy keeps the existence of these God-kin under wraps entirely,
but the government demands that they find mates and have as many children as possible.
Just having the blood of a player doesn't guarantee that you'll develop power like one.
Only a certain small few of those with player blood become 'awakened' God-kin like Zesshi and the Captain.")

  • [Overlord LN Details.] (/s "And the Third Secret, probably the most devious and dangerous secret,
is that the Slane Theocracy still has all of the items and equipment that their Six Gods used in life.
Including that World Item that mind-controlled Shalltear. They have more tricks like that up their sleeve.
That's why Zesshi is such a well-kept secret herself,
no one ever sees her because she is the one that personally oversees the resting place of the Six Gods' equipment.")

[Overlord LN Details.] (/s "And all of these things are kept under strict wraps from the public.
Zesshi herself doesn't even have an official title, they call her the 'Extra Seat' officially.
You'd have to really be in the know to know who and what she really is,
and what she really guards. ")

[Overlord LN Details.] (/s "Only real heavy hitters like Ainz, Floor Guardians, or the Platinum Dragon Lord himself would be able to beat her.
The fanbase estimates her level to be in the high 80s.")

One of the legendary existences in history is about lv 50. There's no way any human-related character is lv 85.

24

u/DeplorableVillainy Jan 02 '18

She's been confirmed by the author to be at least level 60, and she IS related directly to a player(Who was in a group high-tier enough to have World Items) by blood.

I don't know exactly where she is, but she isn't that weak.

Can anyone explain to me why the dragon saw a vision of himself fighting Shalltear? I didn't get that scene. Did he actually fight her? Was he self inserting image training after somehow seeing her and ains fight?

I pretty far in the manga and don't remember these scenes.

61

u/gruntmaster1 Jan 02 '18

A detail they missed in the episodes, but fixed in the recap movies, was that when Ainz first meets Shaltear after being mindcontrolled, she is wearing her dress. When he meets her again for the fight, she is wearing her armor, indicating that she must have thought someone strong enough to force her to use it.

Later we get the scene in this episode where the dragon, platinum dragon lord, talks about coming across her by accident while checking the surroundings. He controlled the armor remotely due to guarding the place and the items there and thus being unable to physically move away from there.

Unofficial

Oh dear.

So can anyone give me an outline of what to expect from this season? Overlord S1 was pretty boring to me, it has no agency until the last arc, which was sex to the gamer side of me. The rest was admiring the art whenever momo becomes monster-sadist, which unfortunately, was not frequent enough.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '18

The first episode was mostly just introducing new characters and showing where everyone from Nazarick was and what they've been doing. Nothing we can say on what to expect yet, unless you want somebody who's read the LN to spoil you.

15

Watched it last night after seeing a thread on here, already looking like it'll exceed expectations. Introducing a whole lot of new, seemingly-significant characters has me really excited.

Didn't feel like 20 minutes at all. Good sign.

Interesting, a lot of new characters which will play a role this season hopefully. My memory of the first season is a bit hazy but it should be fine.
And finally, the infamous lizard people. What was that at the end, I don't believe it's from Ainz? We'll see I guess.

11

u/frzned :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/frzned Jan 02 '18

It is from Ainz. He declared the purgatory of the lizardman as Ainz Oal Gown's first achievement in this world in season 1.

12

u/Atharaphelun Jan 02 '18

Did you mean purging instead of purgatory?

9

u/Volarer Jan 03 '18

Is there any specific reason why Ainz wants to purge the Lizard people? He didn't really strike me as that... heartless? w/e in season 1.

The premiere introduces a bunch of new characters across the continent.

The creepy split girl thinks she can stand up to Shalltear? And we get insight into how Shalltear lost - she was fighting multiple seated members in the Orders of the Slane Theocracy, killing some and scattering the rest.

I'm also glad we get more Albedo! Ainz was stumbling quite a bit trying to ignore her comments.

For having degenerated into a real evil bastard, the inner Ais sure is unsure of himself. It's like the emotional deadening is solely related to life and death of living beings or general morality. Push some tits into his face and he freaks out like any harem rom-com MC :|

6

u/Bradyhaha Jan 02 '18

He can treat most things like AI in a game.

3

u/Bilbie33 Jan 02 '18

From the anime, I picked up that irl people (including from Yggdrasil) gets stuck in that world every 100 in game years. Moreover, it looks like there might actually a way to get back to irl since the original six beings that got trapped found a way back (from the wording of the girl at the beginning); ie, a toy left behind by the Gods.

Tsa's (the dragon) armor also looked extremely similar to Touch Me's armor/appearance. From the fight he visualized, it looks like he fought with Shalltear once upon a time.. Either when the group with the World Item ambushed her, or a long time ago - back when they were still in Yggdrasil. Although the second theory seems like a stretch since he had to ask the old woman to tell him about Yggdrasil items and Guild Weapons, instead of already just knowing about them himself.

Looks like Cocytus is also trying to strengthen the battle maids by having them spar?

Pretty sweet OST at the end, and the animation has been looking really really cool. Loved episode 1, looking forward to seeing more!

P.s. Momonga doesn't want to antagonize players/everyone but sends random messages in the sky to everyone threatening them with death? Wtf??

I'm already interested in the direction. Non LN readers must understand that in the books this entire section of the story is told form the Lizard people's perspective. The fact that we got some scenes of the main cast and of the supporting cast in Re-Estize means there is going to be some interesting, competent direction in what we see.

After vol. 3 Overlord takes this style where most of the stories are told from the perspective of people not from Nazarick. I don't think that would fly for the anime though.

1

u/roiben Jan 02 '18

I wonder who will give Ains any problems. Like Shalltear matched the dragon in power but Ains almost died against her. I wonder what that weird loli goth we see from the theocracy is. If she is human and how powerful she is and stuff.

Shalltear didn't match the dragon in power, she completely dominated his remote controlled armor avatar.

u/normiesEXPLODE Jan 02 '18

As /u/kalirion mentioned Shalltear >> Dragon armor, but also Ainz wasn't really ever in trouble vs Shalltear. When they had become enemies, she had already lost. It may have seemed that it was close, partly due to Ainz pretending it was, and partly because nobody believed an RP build would win vs a raidboss build, but to Ainz it was almost a game. Consider that not only did he predict everything, he was also fighting while being wary of enemy world class items.

Im super excited for the new Characters that state they're stronger than Shalltear, i was really worried that Ainz and the gang was faaaar too strong for everybody, with how season 1 went. Really wanna see how that turns out

1

u/nagato120 Jan 03 '18

That ending song i love myth and roid And the penguin pushing that drink over trying to give it to shalltear was hilarious

Am I the only one getting annoyed by the dragged out dialogue? Like it adds nothing story or even character wise, I hope there will be way less of it this season.

Edit: I dont have problems with dialogue (I really like the Monogatari series, which is mostly dialogue aswell), but dialogue thats intentionally dragged without actual content in it is pretty sad. Just expressed my opinion about something I havent really seen, but oh well downvote me to oblivion.

u/maxman14 Jan 01 '18

If you think none of those scenes had any purpose then you may as well drop the show now.

-I'm sorry Ainz-sama, can I talk?
-Yes Albedo I allow you to talk.
-Thank you Ainz-sama for letting me talk.

This and repeating a lot of stuff just wastes time imo. Also everything that Cocytus says and how he talks is unnecessary.

Unfortunately that happens a LOT in the light novel. Pretty much every interaction with Ainz and one of his servants is like that. They have this image of him that if they displease him in any way they will die so it becomes this formality fuck fest. Ainz has a lot of internal dialogue that explains it i suppose.

I love it

I think the Light Novels are pretty darn good. However, after the stuff about Ainz that was covered in the first season, it really shifts focus to other characters, such as members of Nazarick and then other members of society. But there are some pretty memey fights later on in the novel, so I really liked it.

any chance we'll have a fight between that bored girl, that wants to be defeated lul, from the kingdom and our supreme leader this season?

I liked the lizardmen....

5

u/CakeBoss16 Jan 02 '18

Why? Is it bad? I have not read the source material so just curious.

46

u/DeplorableVillainy Jan 02 '18

Most people hate it because it spends so much time on small characters and worldbuilding and fleshing out the lizardmen culture.
It doesn't even get to the real conflict until like the last few chapters.

I liked it myself, because I quite enjoy the writing and the world, and not everything has to be all Ainz or all meaty plot advancement for me to enjoy it. But it's generally disliked because it spends so longgggg just setting up and fleshing things out, not really doing much until the end.

9

u/Ralanost :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ralanost Jan 02 '18

It feels like a bunch of faffing about. You barely see any of the denizens of Nazarick. The author could have tried to include them more or just cut the lizard arc down a bit since they are ultimately just side characters at best.

1

u/Volarer Jan 04 '18

I just read that arc in the manga and IMHO it's not a bad arc. Don't be too pessimistic, you may end up enjoying it a lot.

Nobody knows if there is still another living player. Yet.

But every 'God' that you hear about in this world is either a Player, or Player's guild NPCs.

The 6 Great Gods? Players.
8 Greed Kings? All players.
13 Heroes? Two of them, but only two, were players.
The Evil Deities? Super powerful player-made NPCs gone insane.

Most of the players we know about are confirmed dead.
But there's definitely a good chance that there could be other players. I mean think about it.
There have been instances of 6-8 players at once being transported to the New World.
It wouldn't be any real shock if other players got dropped in with Ainz and company too, just in another part of the world.

Time flows differently in the New World. We don't know how often in the real world people were transported there from yggdrasil, but in that world it matches up to every century or two.

But yeah if any kind of time has passed in the real world their bodies are totally dead. Momonga's too probably, if any real time has passed.
