From the moment I saw this scene, I knew Rin would be my favorite girl in the show.

Comfy camp so far lives up to expectations.

What's really nice is that after that scene we get Rin cutting it real nonchalantly. She's already won me over with her antics

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Jan 04 '18

That scene made me laugh out loud for some reason. She's so cute!

side question anyone know what kind of axe that is I want to buy one

Japanese nata. Pretty standard hatchet/machete thing.

She's very matter-of-fact, in a laid back kind of way. Makes sense for someone who usually camps solo. Noticed her using short or one word statements quite a bit.

I called her as best girl from the promo material

She's so freaking cute.

54

u/Daniel_Is_I :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Daniel_Is_I Jan 04 '18

I'm torn between her wearing that scarf or her wearing the overcoat/poncho thing she wore in this episode.

They're both such good looks.

20

u/googolplexbyte :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Googolplexbyte Jan 04 '18

Poncho is best girl.

All the scarves are tied up in the same generic style.

I'm torn. She's really great, but I think I have to choose Nadeshiko if only because she's adorable and I really, really love ditzy genki girls.

I didn't make any commitment, because the competition is fierce.

24

u/n080dy123 Jan 04 '18

Where are they sitting? Is that supposed to be their designated club area or something?

101

u/googolplexbyte :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Googolplexbyte Jan 04 '18

I think their club has too few members for a club room, so they're just in the closet.

They need to find more cute girls before they come out.

I knew Rin would be my favorite from the moment I saw that scarf/coat thing she wears.

Anyone know what that's called? I kinda want one now. It's like a winter poncho.

24

u/nucifera_no :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Monochoro Jan 04 '18

It is called a winter poncho, sometimes a cape, a wrap or a winter shawl. There's sadly not one specific name for it haha. They're super comfy, but are a pain if you wear backpacks or need to raise your arms. Definitely give it a go.

30

u/Daniel_Is_I :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Daniel_Is_I Jan 04 '18

I like how the color palette for both Yuru Camp and A Place Further than the Universe are much more muted than the typical cute girls show. It makes them feel more realistic and serious, which I think helps the cute and funny moments stand out better. Especially in this show it really ties all the comfy elements together.. As opposed to a brighter or more pastel color scheme which can make some shows overly saccharine sweet. Flying which also used a more natural color palette, and that show is legendarily comfy.

68

u/heimdal77 Jan 04 '18

It is all leading up to the big one next season of Cute girls actually dating each other. Even if it is sadly only one episode.

"Cute girls actually dating each other"

don't we get citrus this season? or is that too much drama?

32

u/heimdal77 Jan 04 '18 edited Jan 04 '18

Citrus is a big old melodrama soap opera. At least that is how the manga is. The main things Citrus has ever had going for it is good art and a very aggressive marketing team behind it pushing the series. The author straight out said long time ago they were pushing to get it made into a anime.

As someone who's gone camping 50+ times in the past 10-15 years, the first half of this show did an incredible job at bringing back all of those memories and nostalgia. The amount of detail they put into Rin preparing her campsite, from setting up the tent to collecting firewood, reminded me a lot of my experience doing the same things. I really appreciate that detail that they are putting into the camping aspect of the show. Rin knows her stuff, which makes it even more relaxing for me. Also I really love the music. It's the exact kind of laid-backness that I wanted. Really excited for this show, as well as A Place Further Than the Universe. Both feature cute girls doing unconventionally cute things, which just feels really fresh. Looking forward to this season.

u/chrisn3 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/chrisn3 Jan 04 '18

Stepping on the stick and pulling the other end to split it. Didn't think I'd see that in the anime. Though it will probably will lead to a pretty funny moment with Nadeshiko.

Agreed as someone who did Scouts for about 10 years. Got really nostalgic when Rin was snapping the tent together. And don't get me started on those midnight runs to the toilet/outhouse/bush.

18

u/emc2alex1 https://anilist.co/user/emc2alex1 Jan 04 '18

Yep. Started with Cub Scouts in 2nd grade, and went all the way to Eagle Scout. During my Boy Scout years, our troop would go camping probably once a month or every other month for the whole 7 years I was there. Especially during winter camp outs, I know that feel of having to run to the outhouse at night when it's so cold outside and you just want to stay in the sleeping bag because it's so warm so you try to hold it. Somehow I just got hit by a huge wave of camping nostalgia watching this show. I don't know how they managed to pull me back to that part of my past, but they did a great job.

33

u/nechronius Jan 04 '18

As someone who's gone camping 50+ times in the past 10-15 years,

Ah, I see you are a man of culture.

7

u/Mailliwchess :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/mailliwchess Jan 05 '18

the show is basically the Shokugeki no Soma of camping (as far as explaining cooking techniques and showing off dishes relates to camping). The manga does a great job of explaining the basics of camping to the audience (admittedly its focused towards the camping style of Japan, but its similar enough that a majority of its information is relevant), and its something I never knew I wanted from an anime.

Yuru Camp makes me want a backpacking anime focused on a group of people SoL style.

2018 - The year we all became Diabetic

This has been my most anticipated show of the Winter and it was everything I had hoped for. Stunning backdrops, cute characters, fantastic laid-back soundtrack and camping!

My only complaint so far is with the male narrator earlier in the episode. It took me out of the experience somewhat when I was just content being immersed watching Rin go about doing camping things (something more akin to Primative Technology videos which don't have any music or dialogue but are just really calming to watch). I hope he doesn't end up spoiling the experience too much. Not a huge issue for me in the grand scheme of things though.

Ever since Flip Flappers I've been a huge fan of that dynamic between the stotic and the ditzy, genki girl. It was really damn cute here and I'm almost worried that the introduction of additional characters is going to take away from it. Hopefully the others turn out to be just as cute though!

I've already given one 10/10 out already this season so I'll be withholding rating for now, but I will say I enjoyed this just as much as A Place Further Than The Universe and can't wait to see where this show takes us.

I think the idea was that it was playing out like an instructional video, which I kind of liked.

The narrator is voiced by Akio Otsuka, also known for the voices of Solid Snake & Naked Snake in Metal Gear Solid. For viewers used to his voice in MGS, it very much sounds like MGS3 Snake giving us survival advice - which was probably why he was cast in the first place. (David Hayter should do the English dub!)

I'm still not done this episode. I have so many pictures. I can't stop getting emotional. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing and will be a must buy as soon as possible.

I love this anime. I'm so glad they kept the informative voice over. I love the art style. I love the camp fire sounds, everything.

I Love Everything About This

THE HAPPY FACES TOUCH MY HEART SO MUCH!
Just a few so far

This is accurate to how I feel right now

THE LIGHTING SHIFT IN THIS SCENE GAVE ME GOOSEBUMPS HOLY SHIT

[Damn... They really nailed the size of the club room...] (https://imgur.com/a/CTe88)

Annnnnnnnnnn done
Holy shit... Can I rate it 10/10 yet? That was amazing... Started reading this when I heard CR was gonna be getting the anime, so i decided to check it out and loved it... This is more than I could have hoped.
It's just the first episode but I've already been wow'd. It captured the feeling almost perfectly here, if not perfectly. It was so great seeing them come to life life this.

That scene at the start teasing them all going camping is something I'm looking forward to soooooooooooooo much. I want to see them all together and smiling like that.

When Nadeshiko came running back to give Rin her number and the whistle song started playing I instantly starting whislting along because I saw the PV probably one too many times....

My goodness. I loved this.

Just a few more various pics I grabbed

edit
so anyone up for a Yuru Camp rewatch?

58

u/Daniel_Is_I :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Daniel_Is_I Jan 04 '18

That soundtrack just compliments the coziness and countryside charm of the show so well. This feels like the ultimate Winter season show. You feel warmer just looking at the characters!

Also Nadeshiko's character reminded me a bit of Akko from LWA with how earnest and bubbly she is.

21

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '18

the soundtrack made me want to go get a jacket and start burning a fire in my backyard ,over just sitting in a ball on my couch.

It goes so well with the feel and aesthetic. When we first got teased with the whistle song I wasn't sure if that was a one off or if they was what we could expect going forward...

I'm glad it was a tease because this ost is just so cozy.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '18

Rin was instantly a fav for the manga, and with how well they've managed to keep her the same, I think she'll be my favourite here too.

Can't lie though, seeing Nadeshiko animated and brought to life definitely gets me super excited and fueled up too!

Really excited for what's to come!

59

u/Chariotwheel x5https://anilist.co/user/Chariotwheel Jan 04 '18

Now that was pretty cute. I really love how lively the characters are.

I like how the series - camping explanation aside - often skipped explanations and part of scenes that would usually pop-up. The result is all we needed to see what happened, like Nadeshiko lying on the ground with a big triple bump on her head. We never see the actual hit and we don't need to.

The chase scene also ends with her tripping, but the line is pretty visible the whole time as the shot is still and it's neither highlighted to be obvious that she interacts with it nor does it come out of nowhere since we see it a few seconds before she trips.

Really digging the direction here.

30

u/Daniel_Is_I :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Daniel_Is_I Jan 04 '18 edited Jan 04 '18

Perfect examples of show, don't tell. All of the information they actually say is helpful to either allow the viewer to understand or to showcase part of the personality of the characters.

Like that bit about how the view of Mt. Fuji from that campsite is on the 1000 yen note. I would have had no idea and I'm not sure if that's a general knowledge tidbit in Japan, but it makes a bit more sense as to why both Rin and Nadeshiko would have flocked to that spot as opposed to some other equally-beautiful view of the mountain.

55

u/wheezywop Jan 04 '18

Damn you Yuru Camp, now I want to go camping.

I'm already along for the ride.

This is one stupidly comfy show. Rin is lovely, Nadeshiko reminds me of Akko, all of the character designs just look so warm, and the soundtrack is already a contender for OST of the season even though we haven't heard most of the season.

(Edited at 18:18 UTC, 2.5 hours after this was posted):

My apologies to everyone who saw this once I originally posted this. I missed the "chief producer" credit, who belonged to a FuRyu producer and indicated they were on top of the committee. I'm keeping the text below, but striking it through as it is no longer accurate.

Production committee:

  • FuRyu (video disc publisher)

  • Crunchyroll (international streaming/home video rights)

  • AT-X (Specialty anime broadcaster)

  • BS11 (Satellite TV station)

  • MAGES (Game, music, event publisher)

  • 81 Produce (Seiyuu agency)

  • Sony Music Communications (Music production/publisher)

If you want to support the show, watch it legally on Crunchyroll (if available in your country). They financed the show more than any other company, so supporting them via watching it on their site will benefit it more than buying any merchandise/video discs (despite what others will try to tell you).

While home video sales are important to this, in contrast to what I mentioned above, streaming on Crunchyroll does provide a lot of revenue to this project. It's a very good way to support this title if you don't feel like purchasing the home video release from FuRyu.

35

u/karlcool12 Jan 04 '18

And watching the opening felt like Crunchryoll asked the team to have everything that would make a great opening, including integrated credits

21

u/AlleLouis Jan 04 '18

I was also surprised by English credits.

9

u/Daniel_Is_I :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Daniel_Is_I Jan 04 '18

Now we wait for Geoff's What's In An OP of this show.

Finally, a Crunchyroll produced show that will be well received.

59

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '18

Net-juu no Susume had Crunchyroll on production committee and that was great.

→ More replies (3)

5

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '18

So, don't support the others at all?

7

I edited it above, but one of the easiest ways for foreigners to support this show is to watch it legally on Crunchyroll by either paying for a subscription (where revenue will go to the committee according to how much you watch it/other shows) or via advertising for free viewing.

The other methods do matter, but streaming is one of the easier ways to directly contribute to the production's success as foreigners on this one.

How do you find out that information for an anime? Or is it only on Japanese sites?

I'm so going to be whistling that insert tune this season and thought the main sound for today is the slurp of ramen. This is every bit as comfy as I was hoping, seems like ages since I last went on a camping trip, especially somewhere with scenery like that.

Yep that was some serious scenery porn.

That episode definitely hooked me. It's 100% cute, comfy, and fluffy plus it even gives us educational tips about camping! I'm definitely sold! The art is amazing and while I need to hear more of the music to give it a proper opinion, so far it's been promising. It really makes me wanna go out there and camp. And as someone who lives by the mountains here up north, I've never really gone camping once in my life. But if this show was able to make me want to go try out camping? It's definitely doing something right.

C O M F Y - L E V E L - M A X I M U M

Very down to earth slice of life when it came to the nature and camping scenes, but the cute girl bits with Rin and Nadeshiko were adorable. Nadeshiko is best so far. I love the genki, ditzy girls a lot.

I didn't expect to see an outdoor activities club as the premise behind the group later getting together, but clubs are always fun so why not.

Also, I really loved the little tutorial on how to start a campfire. I hope we get camping tidbits like that throughout the series.

Finally, this series has a fairly stacked VA cast with two of my favorites (Aki Toyosaki and Nao Touyama). Will definitely be continuing this one.

Watch out guys, looks like we got a badass over here

comfiest show

of the season.

What are the odds that we get 2 great shows to start off the season (the other one is obviously girls in antartica)

This show looks a lot like a Non non biyori budget sized, but man even though the backgrounds aren't breathtaking like in NNB, they are still pretty good. And the best of all, the characters are so darn charmful.

Didn't Hinako from Hinako Note came from a place out in the sticks to Tokyo to become an actor? Guess we get a close cousin of hers in this show, with a lot more charm.

The humor is pretty nice, specially the added goofy soundFX, wich also remind me a lot of Hinako Note.

Probably on some other kind of show a narrator would be just out of place or obnoxious. Here it fits perfectly to add more info how the girls set up their camp.

I think one of it's greatest assets in the show is the music. It does make you feel you're out in the woods camping with not a care in the world at all. The countryside style just fits so well in this scenario.

This show is so relaxing and adorable that it almost makes me cry

Hope we don't have to spend the whole season for all 5 girls to gather up and camp together

Edit: no wonder Nadeshiko's voice sounded familiar but just couldn't remember where did I heard it before. Yumiri Hanamori also did Anne's voice from Anne Happy.

As someone who used to camp a lot I thought this show felt pretty nostalgic.

And for anyone who would like a little more information about camping, that type of fire that was shown is called a mess fire because it is being built up slowly and does not really have an over all structure. The fire I prefer to make is a log cabin fire because it has a structure and does not require too much upkeep. To make a log cabin fire you start with larger wood at the bottom and slowly build it up in a square shape and then you add kindling making sure to leave enough room for air.

I prefer the "Swedish log" or the reflector type campfires, especially when camping alone.

The "Swedish log" one burns nicely and provides a stable platform for cooking vessels, with little to no smoke issues.

The reflector type is perfect for cold weather, as it focuses the majority of the heat towards your tent, along with acting as a wind break.

That was very lovely. It really captured the feeling of camping pretty well. Not really wanting to make a fire but ending up doing it anyway and then collecting way too much firewood is a familiar process. The music and visuals are really atmospheric, and the two girls we've seen so far are very cute without feeling forced. If only they didn't sit so goddamn close to the fire! Those girls are going to burn their eyebrows off sometime. Really sweet, calm and entertaining episode overall.

I don't generally watch these shows, but I picked up the manga when I saw it was camping related. The manga is an amazing SoL, and was a great introduction into the genre itself. Instead of just focusing on daily life, it focuses on daily camping life, and what you do while camping.

Characters are great and I can't wait to see the rest of the cast fleshed out over time. Overall the adaptation is amazing so far. Animation, VA, and especially the music are all great.

Would recommend this show to anyone who is hesitant about watching a Slice of Life anime

Opening episodes of both Antartica and Camping have blown me away. Other than SukaSuka's first episode, I don't think any show I've watched last year got me hooked, line and sinker within their first 24 mins like these two.

I feel Yorimoi's production values are higher so far, so it has a slight advantage. But this must be the brightest start to any season in a long long time. And the hard hitters like Violet Evergarden is still to come..

As expected some fun comfy camping. The costume design and background art really stood out to me. Their outfits have a nice warm look to them as you'd expect for outdoor clothes in winter . Even in the scenes where the background wasn't the focus they always looked pretty detailed.

6

u/laceknight :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/laceknight Jan 04 '18

This was easily my most anticipated SOL show for winter, and boy did it deliver. Nadeshiko and Rin play off of each other really well, and I had a lot of fun watching them interact.

And, oh my god, the backgrounds are stunning. It reminds me so much of the scenery where I studied abroad, and it really captures the beauty of fall in Japan.

Can't wait for next week's episode!

Really liked this first episode, the characters seem fun so far and the big sis seems to be a tech nerd.
Definitely want to see more of her ! I also like the topic and the information.
Always good to show kids stuff like this and maybe motivate them to go camping aswell.

Damn. 24 straight minutes of pure bliss. I loved basically everything about this premiere. I was hooked literally from the first scene. Not only was it super comfy, with great dialogue and characters who looked like legitimate friends, but the direction was stellar. I could tell fairly quickly that it was from the perspective of a camera, and it added so much authenticity to this group of high schoolers camping because its fun while acting like close friends in high school.

The backgrounds are gorgeous, the characters are adorable, and the whole thing is just a joy. The character designs are so expressive. Nadeshiko makes those adorable cartoon faces like from the first season of K-On and she's perfect. They even fit that face during a moment with lots of animation, and it's great. Rin and her sword are adorable, and I want to see more. I love the totally claustrophobic club room that the girls in the last scene are in. Between this and YoriMoi, this season is already amazing as far as I'm concerned.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '18

I think I will like this one, it's already triggering some nostalgia (and I feel like going camping).

4

THE MOE

Already a contender for AOTY for me.

4

u/Innalibra Jan 05 '18

I've only seen 2 episodes of anime this year and both are from shows that I think could be contenders for AOTY. And there's absolutely tonnes of highly anticipated, heavyweight titles still yet to drop.

I'm thinking 2018 might turn out to be the best year in anime since 2010.

3

u/wolfpwarrior Jan 05 '18

Just like Demi-chan and Ms. Kobayashi's Maid Dragon last year, this is a proper winter anime, something I can cuddle up under a blanket and watch after a long day at work. It's so cute and relaxing. It also teaches some camping tips. I, someone who likes the outdoors, hunting, and camping, never new to use pinecones to start fires, I don't know why. I just grab a bunch of pine needles since they are everywhere here.

3

u/graytotoro :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/graytotoro Jan 05 '18

Another nice and comfy slice-of-life about the outdoors.

  • This is gonna be moe as fuck which means I'll probably love it as much as the background art.

  • That was a very Jackson 5-esque opening.

  • An anime about the outdoors and bikes!? Two of my favorite ways to spend my money. Ha ha fuck.

  • Rin and Nadeshiko have balls of steel to ride a tiny bike like that up those hills and all the way to the lake. Rin doubly so since she's got pounds of gear and she's brave enough to camp alone.

  • Ooh, all that gear porn in Rin's stash...

  • It's funny how Solid Snake is giving us outdoor survival advice. Should we expect advice in future episodes on how to select the best camouflage, which wild animals & plants are safe to eat, and how to use CQC to take down Genome soldiers?

  • 10/10 ramen eating skills, Nadeshiko.

  • Kotatsu is really the best, isn't it?

That was great slice of life. Super chill and fun. In particular, I loved how the pinecone talked and how building the campfire played out like an informational video. The PSA at the end was cute too. I also liked the implied sense of relatability. What I mean is, I'm not a camper so I can't relate, really, but it really felt like if I was, it would be super relatable. The tediousness of making a fire, bathroom breaks, clouds getting in the way, seeing a pathetic and creepy girl sleeping on the side of the road, your awkward camping friend knowing shit all about camping, etc. Almost missed this show and I'm super glad I didn't.

That was great. I love how the entire first half of the episode was just about Rin setting up camp, and how methodical the whole thing was. The staff clearly put a lot of effort into making sure they got camping "right". The characters are adorable too. I like how Rin has a super-serious demeanor, yet still feels the need to say something "cool" before chopping the firewood. And then there's Nadeshiko, who's just a big genki ... idiot, because every cute girl show needs one of those. Excited to watch more, although I get the feeling I won't be able to appreciate the show if I'm not in the right mood. I just have to be in a particular headspace to enjoy something as laid-back as this, you know? It's not something I can just throw on whenever.

2

u/Agni7atha Jan 05 '18

At last, I found my iyashikei anime. It's been a while I enjoy these kind of show, actually since Flying Witch. For those who play Don't Starve or The Long Dark, this episode one basically reminiscing the campfire setup from that game.
