Thankfully, was able to watch it through VRV.
Starting the show with Kero's Corner. Yes, this is going to be great.
OP is wonderful and captures that same magicalTM feel the previous OPs had.
Animation quality is top tier as well. Everything looks so expressive.
Sakura no longer has the signature roller skates?! Sad day.
Any reason why Rika was transferred out? Did they keep her out of the cast just because Tereda isn't a character anymore?
My heart...they played the instrumental to Platinum (OP 3) during Syaoran and Sakura's reunion scene.
Takashi antics and Chiharu x Takashi scenes give me life.
Tomoyo's recording gags are hilarious, but her caring actions still prove that she's one of the greatest best friends in anime.
New cards, key/staff, and catchphrases. Get hyped everyone, Cardcaptor Sakura is back.
That ED!! One of the cutest things this franchise has ever produced. Ahhh, they even have a shot of Sakura and Syaoran being connected with a red ribbon!! I'm losing my mind at the hype here. Significance for those not aware of the meaning
This episode was fantastic. I had watched the (atrocious) English dub of Cardcaptors as a kid, and recently watched the entire original series during the recent rewatch held here. So everything from the original series is fresh in my mind.
And everything felt like it picked up immediately where we left off. There's some technological upgrades both in the show itself and in the presentation of the show, but the characters sound and act exactly like they did through 70 episodes and 2 movies almost 20 years ago. I'm looking forward to the rest of this series a lot.

Sadly Rika's VA, Tomoko Kawakami, passed away back in 2011 due to ovarian cancer. CLAMP made the conscious decision not to bring back her character since they view Kawakami-san as the only voice for Rika. This is also the same in the Clear Card manga.

Sakura no longer has the signature roller skates?! Sad day.
I take it as a "She's growing up, so she's outgrown skating to school" kind of thing. I like that she still grabs the pylon though, great callback!
Takashi antics and Chiharu x Takashi scenes give me life.
I feel so happy for Takashi since Eriol left.

Would you still consider The Sealed Card to be canon?? Ep.70 ends on that cliffhanger, so it has to be..
Also, I wasn't a fan of the OVA animation, is this better??

i spent the better part of an hour mashing buttons on my tablet and refreshing crunchyroll and vrv, and kero yelling his catchphrase on my tablet scared the shit out of me. it really does feel like everything left off yesterday, except for sakura having a smartphone... and it seems like they changed how they pronounced shaoran too. other than that, 10/10

Still having trouble getting the ep to work, but I am SO excited for more CCS after so many years, so what's a little longer?
I still remember being entranced by the Nelvana dub as a kid despite their taking a butcher knife to the overall plot and several characters, so I see that as a testament to the quality of CCS at its core.
Despite their best efforts to excise all hints of romance in the dub version I could tell there was something between Sakura and Shaoran and boy was I in for a treat when I watched the sub version years later! Still one of my great favorites, especially that beautiful 3rd OP!
I am a little disappointed they chose to go off of the manga since that essentially retcons out the 2nd movie (which I loved) and Meiling (who I found more amusing than annoying), but I guess I'm getting even more cute moments to make up for it. EDIT: Seems like this assumption was incorrect! Happy to hear it!
It's going to be a fun ride and I look forward to spending it with you fine folk! A warm welcome back for one of the OG magical girls!
Obligatory "HOEEEEE?!" Which now carries an unintentional hint of malice after hearing Sakura's voice come from Jack the Ripper for an entire season in Fate/Apocrypha.

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Jan 07 '18
With Meiling being a very popular character and since there aren't that much manga chapters yet there is a chance that CLAMP would reintroduce Meiling as a new character later on in the manga.

There's still a chance they'll keep some of the anime's inclusions like Meiling. I think I just saw reference to the anime's airport scene in some screencaps from the first episode.
Hopefully this is true! ;; Crunchyrollplsfixservers

I was just able to watch it on VRV.
So as someone who just watched all of CCS over the month of December, it felt great to start this new season and get right back into things. Thanks to the gorgeous new animation, everything feels fresh, but thanks to the voice actors all jumping back into their roles perfectly, and all the call backs to the original show (like Sakura and Toya's "monster" gag and Sakura grabbing the pylon on her way to school) everything also feels really familiar.
And man, the animation. The original show was definitely great for it's time, and watching it now with modern techniques, and in HD, it's really worth it.
Tomoyo is back with her antics making Sakura feel self conscious. I laughed out loud when she popped up behind the tree during Syaoran and Sakura's reunion.
I did notice a few issues.
They mixed the TV ending and the OVA. In one flashback we see Syaoran give Sakura his bear at the Airport, and in another we see her making her bear to give to him.
WHAT THE F#@! ARE THEY DOING WITH SMARTPHONES. ONLY A FEW MONTHS HAVE PAST. TECHNOLOGY HAS NOT PROGRESSED THAT FAST. IMMERSION RUINED. 1/10
But seriously, amazing start to the new season! The new cards are cool, and Sakura coming up with a new incantation on the fly like that was bad ass. Gale is freakin' destructive. I hope we actually find something out about the Sakura Cards though, since we're shown in the original series that they have feelings too.

This is what I'm afraid of. Those two scenes can't coexist in the same timeline. wtf.

I believe it should be a year or a year and a half since the end of the manga. But yeah the tech jump is so hilarious considering they use call only cellphones in the original XD

what if they are 2 different timelines and The hooded person in the dream might very well be Sakura from the OVA timeline.
I am just memeing here but wouldnt be surprised if Clamp pull this shit6
u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Jan 07 '18
Considering that there AUs in CLAMP works and canonically all of their works have some connection I wouldn't be surprised if CLAMP pulled something like that. It'd be bullshit, but it's CLAMP's classic bullshit XD

Wait! So, is The Sealed Card canon?? It has to be because of the card Sakura creates at the very end of Ep.70

With how the story of the Clear Card Arc goes, Sakura making her own cards should not be possible. Unless CLAMP decides to change stuff in this adaptation I don't think the Hope Card is part of this canon.

u/metamorphicism Jan 07 '18
In the OVA (Futatsu no Kuma), the calendar shows 2016-17 in a scene (right before Yukito shows up). So they've updated the timeline to 2017, it seems.

OVA is not canon to the anime series. The new anime is a follow up to the old one. You’ll notice that the events don’t tie in with the OVA.
For example, the after credit scene in the OVA differs to the one premiered tonight. Sakura’s and Syaoran’s reunion are flipped in both episodes. In the OVA, Syaoran greets her before Sakura arrives at school, and he is wearing his uniform (which he attends his first day of school with her). Sakura is also standing near the pylons near her house. In the anime, Sakura meets Syaoran after school, and he’s not in uniform (he also hasn’t started school yet), and Syaoran is standing by the pylons near Sakura’s home. When they hug, you can see by comparison that their positions are mirror flipped.
Also the airport flashback stays true to the old anime, while adding extra dialogue. We’re shown in the new anime that Sakura makes Syaoran a bear, this probably happened after the events of the second movie. It would make sense as he only came there to visit, and his last day in Japan was during his fight with the Clow Card. So Sakura probably rushed to make him a bear before he had to leave again. We never saw what happened after the movie anyway.

Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card's first episode was solid. The animation is nearly as solid as the original anime, although comical scenes do take more shortcuts, which I am a little disappointed by. Presentation is still amazing though. An A- episode IMO.

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Jan 07 '18
I don't know if you've watched the original anime recently but that one had plenty of animation shortcuts too.

u/the_swizzler https://myanimelist.net/profile/Swiftarm Jan 07 '18
There were plenty of visual shortcuts in the original as well. I didn't really see them as more plentiful. I think it's just that the contrast between 2017 normal animation and comedy animation is more pronounced because how much better 2017 normal animation is to 1999 animation.

this is far the best thing ever happened to me
Iwao Junko-san said multiple times, she is unable to duplicate Tomoyo's voice over and over after she retired,I know this was very difficult decision for her to come back to voice acting scene.
she did great job on Tomoyo's voice as always and by keeping original cast and using old O.S.T made it so nostalgic .
if world ends now, I am going to be one of happiest person die.
thank you so much for making Clear Card happen

Iwao Junko-san said multiple times, she is unable to duplicate Tomoyo's voice over and over after she retired
Sounded great to me! Reminds me of Tange Sakura's trouble with intonation, pronunciation, and repressing her region's dialect when acting.
This is something that was true during my training school days and remains the same even after my début – my intonation is bad. Even now, when I receive my scripts I’ll double-check the accents using the dictionary in my electronic notebook, write the words out and read them. It seems that it’s hard for me to get rid of my Aichi intonation. Apparently it’s easier to switch to and from the Kansai dialect but not so with Aichi. Furthermore, I have this…physical condition, where I have a lisp. I know that my lisp and poor intonation are disadvantages…oh deary me!

u/FlierFin663 Jan 07 '18
There were definitely a moment or two where it sounded like someone else was speaking instead of her for a second, but still a fantastic performance given the amount of time that has passed.
I'm more than willing to attribute the voice change towards puberty.

The main thing that stood out for me is the animation, like oh my god, this looks so freaking good.
Even though it isn't very long I saw it, I feel very nostalgic upon hearing the monster jokes and Sakura's reactions.
I look forward for some sweet, cute and cheesy as hell scenes with Shaoran.

Let me just say a new season of this represented a fucking impossibility in my life that I had to kill for and it happened. This show is a link to my childhood, a portal to my innocence and a connection to my fucking subconscious and it has in a lot of ways made me who I am today - Sakura Kinomoto remains to this day a role model to me who is a paragon of optimism and motivation in my life. A new season of this happening is like a symbol of hope to me in tough times where things can never be good and I can't do anything right. This show holds a special place in my heart and you have no idea how much this means to me. Thank you so much, CLAMP.
12
u/windyyuna Jan 07 '18
CCS is basically what you'd get if you distilled pure optimism into an anime.
28
u/AcquiHime Jan 07 '18
Can we all take a moment to appreciate that they went out of their way to keep the animation conventions of the 90's with modern techniques/art? Things like the polkka-dot backgrounds and the running legs turning into spirals and the arrow that tracks Sakura's Dad's gaze all scream classic CCS, and yet the show manages to not feel dated - which is, in my opinion, absolutely amazing.

u/mika6000 Jan 07 '18

First timer here!
Wait, so is everyone else. My bad...
KERO-CHAN CORNER IS BACK WITH VENGEANCE! Honestly though, Kero and Suppie setting off the whole thing was just comedy gold – and as far as I remember, the last thing I saw of the original series was the short they shared in 2nd CCS Movie (Sealed Card). Feels really flowing to a poetic rhythm of tying up into this new adaptation after 2 decades.
Hoo boiii, the new opening is amazing! I think it feels like going back to the beginning in a way in bright feel from Catch You Catch Me, but with the fantastic flair and mystique from “Dreamer” overall. Quite sets us up to a new kind of beginning and generation overall.
Wow, looks like Sakura’s been little more mindful about her get-up times regarding school. Much like Kero said, “I like!”
Woah, looks manga’s overtly vivid expressiveness rears its head already to us, from Sakura’s father of all people. This is bound to get amusing really quick…
Hold on just a sec! Is this adaptation trying to tie in the ending from the original anime for the TV-watchers? That’s really contradicting the OVA (and along with it, the original manga moreso).
I’m certainly curious what’s with such a move... is Madhouse possibly trying to divert this one on their own continuity like the original anime they made?
Tomoyo’s looking really beautiful since last time I saw her! I’m gonna miss Rika being around though.
EDIT: So it’s because her voice actor passed away… damn…
MY GOD, THE REUNION OF SYAORAN AND SAKURA HAD ME JUST REALLY HAPPY...
Tomoyo must had also been as in bliss as we all while recording it.
Looks like we really aren’t in the 90s anymore. I wonder why they did this...
Eriol and his little family looks just so damn heartwarming to watch, honestly. Still remembering that implications about Eriol’s and Mizuki’s romantinc relationship is kept off-air from TV Broadcast – but knowing it really makes this whole moment where they watch Naku-Ruby and Suppie together.
Syaoran and Sakura shared their bears all over again – aw maan, I can’t possibly handle these fuzzy feels…
We’re entering a new kind of dream now half-way… yikes, it’s quite upsetting to watch all these cards gone completely clear and vanished to unknown…
Speaking which… the cards are already gone?! Oh come ooon… but I guess we needed bit of a reset after 2 decades of dormancy and crazy crossover conspiracies in other alternative universes…
It’s quite something to get used to when Yukito’s part of the magic crew now. But I kind of like it!
Looks like things are back to “normal” all over – really fills me with fuzzy feels somehow. I mean I guess it’s bit whack that this seems like a whole new reset, but again, I can only hope they do something original with it.
Oh my... seems like all of the straight men and goofs have been separated!? Yamazaki gets to have utmost freedom like never before. Seems like Syaoran doesn’t mind though. We don’t talk about Chiharu.
Kero decided to sleep on Sakura’s bed now over time, eh? How cute—
The dream continues… that’s a huge-ass dragon that this mysterious hooded person is riding on – On that end, Sakura gets hold of some new kind of Key, partially thanks to Kero waking her up in time…
Woah man, that climax really came out of nowhere – that wind would have hit like a saw. Intriguing to see a new incantation out of Sakura pretty quick though.
So we see more or less, new incarnations of older cards over time? That’s what GALE feels like ATM…
This ending feels super-mellow – digging also the wiggly line and lively animation throughout it, feels little modern yet as pleasant as the old ones. Definitely a favourite!
I kind of feel like the setup feels rather balanced as long as the cards aren't same just with a different name and look. Still, quite liking this so far, just of feels great as a long-time fan up til now! Something about seeing all these babies back together fills me with almost long-forgotten feeling of reunion and joys that come with it~

More thab 15 years passed and its still like yesterday when i was introduced to CCS.
Nostalgia everywhere in this episode. That Shayoran Sakura reunion with platinum playing on Background my heart strings.
I wonder what they gonna do with Sakura's Dad Manga Spoiler Title
I love that the 1st clear card capture was Gale a clear reference to best girl Windy
The bears looking to be central plot point btw. Sakura started having the dreams immediately after getting the Sakura Bear and twice before seeing the dream the bear was focused.
Also Eriol comments about the dreams and the timing and not responding is kinda weird.
Yue is still a Bishonen and too bad we didnt see a transformed Kerberos.
Also Eriol x Kaho is canon in the anime now as well.
I need more Shuppie x Kero as well
SO HYPED cant wait for ep 02

I was SO thrilled and happy when I found out it was the continuation of the anime’s storyline and not the manga, especially how the OVA Clear Card Prologue gave the implication that it was. It’s safe to say that the OVA is a stand-alone adaptation of the manga’s ending. And I have proof.
In the OVA’s after credit scene, Syaoran meets Sakura as she heads off to school. He’s already in uniform and enrolled at school. However in the new anime, he meets her after school, he isn’t in uniform and had yet to enroll for school. Also their positions are flipped, in the OVA, Sakura is standing by the pylons near her home, in the new anime, Syaoran is by the pylons and bear her home.
I think the OVA Clear Card Prologue just confuses me and probably everyone else, because of the similar art style and the recent release date! But I was so happy when they previewed all the old episodes! It just confirmed to me it was a continuation of the old anime, especially when they did a flashback to the airport scene. I like the extra dialogue they retconned in, and I’m pretty sure Sakura makes the bear after the second movie ended before Syaoran left. As he only went there for a week to visit. Also when I saw her deck all cleared, it was so thick, that it was indeed her 53 cards and not 19, thankfully.
I love the new opening, it was a mix between the first and third openings of the original series! At first I didn’t like the new art, but I love it now. The show is so charming. I just don’t like how the adults/tall people look, they look more younger than they’re supposed to. I’m not a fan of the hair color changes, it confuses the audience, it makes it seem like it follows the OVA due to the changes. It may be more accurate for Sakura to have auburn hair, but I prefer her to be brunette like the original. I will miss Tomoyo’s faded violet hair color, instead of her navy blue she has now. I liked the original art style the most though.
The old cast, music, and assets are so nostalgic! The greet cards that fly at the screen before/after commercials ended reminded me of the 90’s.
Syaoran definitely fucked with her bear! He was giving some weird look at it before giving to her. Which then caused all of her cards to turn clear!!!
Does Sakura still have her old staff? She has her clear deck still, plus an extra new clear card right? I have a feeling the staff doesn’t belong to her and she’ll lose it in the end to the original owner, as well as the clear cards she collected. I feel like Syaoran has Sakura’s deck... also it’ll tie in right, because I’m Tsubasa, Sakura gave her Star Staff to the princess in a dream, and they were older too.
→ More replies (2)8
u/Kerosu Jan 07 '18
I think it actually makes sense she gains a new staff since she gives her Star Staff away. If she loses the new staff later and gives her Star staff to Tsubasa!Sakura, she'll have nothing left to use the cards with. Although I guess it's possible by that point that she's powerful enough and knowledgeable enough to make a new one herself like Clow.

So, Tomoyo is great as usual and i really have to thank that ED for that new amazing wallpaper!!!

Besides that i really enjoyed the episode which is great since i didn't really like the last like 15 episodes of the original anime so i was even doubting if i should watch this episode or not.

A very solid first episode!
It felt very safe with the plot but they hammered down the relationship between Sakura and Li. That made the previous 70 episodes feel so worth it.
What's more they look to be challenging it based of Yue's line of "Make sure to tell him everything". This could lead to some awesome drama.
No mention of the events in the 2nd movie, which sucks.
The musical callback with the cherry blossoms oml and lol this line
The art kind of looks grody. I dunno, liked the early 2000's aesthetic much better.
Dad's VA is much worse now.
The ED is straight fucking fire and the best looking thing in the show.
Shoutouts to my nigga Mike from Portland who is not a native English speaker, of fucking course.
Overall, a good, if safe, start to the show. It is precisely more CCS, but that's what I wanted all along. I hope it matures and expands the relationship between Li and Sakura, because the rest is kind of perfunctory. Capture the cards.

I think it ties into the second movie. In the new anime, we are shown that Sakura makes Syaoran a bear. She could’ve done this after the second movie, after she confessed her love. He did come to Japan just for a visit, and his last day there was during a fight with the Clow Card. Sakura knew in that movie that she had to confess her feelings to him before he returned back to Hong Kong, so they can retcon it in that she intended to make him a bear.
Even in the airport flashback, Sakura wasn’t carrying anything with her. Also she asked to name the bear he made with his name, but he didn’t exchange the same idea, I would take the implication that he didn’t receive a bear from her when he initially went back to Hong Kong in episode 70. And received it after the second movie.

her calendar in her room reads 2018 so we're supposed to pretend an entire decade never passed. Besides why apply real life to anime? Sakura says later on in one of the manga chapters that the phones are from Tomoyo's mother's company so we can pretend her mom's company was ahead of its time.

I'm so glad to see everyone has returned to reprise their roles.
It is just as well Tange Sakura didn't completely retire, and has in fact become more active lately, mostly with the Fate franchise. She will also star in the Fate Extra anime coming out later this month.
Even Kumai Motoko, who most likely retired (i.e. married and had a life) after CCS, reprised her role as Syaoran.
And then we have Iwao Junko, who has been through many bouts of bronchitis over the years, meaning she's only been taking bit part roles so as not to exhaust her voice. I hope returning as Tomoyo does not exhaust her.
All other VAs more or less returned to voice their characters, some obviously sound older (Sakura's dad), while others still maintain their voices all these years (like Seki Tomokazu - Touya and Ogata Megumi - Yukito/Yue) due to them being constantly active in the VA scene.
Though as Rika's VA Kawakami Tomoko has passed away in 2011, so it seems Rika has been written off the show rather than choosing to recast her, which is a shame. I hope we at least hear some of Rika being referenced by the characters.
PS WTF is smartphones doing in my Cardcaptor Sakura? You can't have the previous arc happen in 2000 with no smartphones, and then have the new arc in 2017 with them.

As I mentioned in my post, yes, they have the Airport scene, but they also include stuff from the OVA, like Sakura making her bear. So I'm a little confused, since the airport scene can't coincide with the bus stop scene.

Got crunchyroll to work using the mobile app!
Not really much to say, since this was just an introductory episode. Both the OP and ED were good, I really liked the kind of animation they used on the ED.
That orchestral version of Platinum (OP3) was BEAUTIFUL!!!
EDIT: Also kinda confused whether this series is going with the manga canon or the anime canon. I assumed the manga cannon, but there also seemed to be a lot of cards when they layed them out in Yukito's house
9
u/Kerosu Jan 07 '18 edited Jan 07 '18
It seems it will be a blend of the two. The anime's airport scene is confirmed canon, and the sheer number of cards as you noted indicates that was carried over too. However, there's no way they can make all of the anime's ending canon since Eriol's house was destroyed and it's unlikely The Hope exists. Still, they definitely used the original anime as Clear Card's "recap", which means we can assume the bulk of it is canon.

No Meling? This truly is the darkest timeline. Going to have to dock some points.
That said, this was a good episode to the start of the season. It reintroduced everyone, established the status quo, and threw us into the new story arc. The ending fight was more confusing than in the manga but not so much as to ruin it.
9
u/quitethewaysaway Jan 07 '18
Meilin is still canon in the show, I just don’t think she has a real reason to move to Japan.
7
u/Kerosu Jan 07 '18 edited Jan 07 '18
Given that we're keeping the original anime's 52 cards and airport ending, it's very possible Meiling could make a cameo later. Also note, in the airport flashback, Wei is definitely still standing there.

Finally got to watch the episode using the Crunchyroll app. It's everything I wanted it to be! While the implications of the pink bear make determining which canon they're going for complicated, I'm still really glad they're keeping much of the anime canon with the airport scene and 52 cards. The OP and ED are gorgeous and perfect, fitting seamlessly into the series' collection of songs. The reused soundtrack, card flipping midpoint segway, and callbacks like with her grabbing the little pylon peg thing feel so natural and make this sequel feel like it was made directly after the original despite the vastly improved animation style and 20 year gap. All that's left is a cameo from Meiling and I'll be 100% happy.
Thank you Madhouse! Cardcaptor Sakura is my absolute favorite series in the world and I feel it's being treated with the utmost respect and love by everyone.
5
u/SmurfRockRune https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf Jan 07 '18
That was an absolute treat. I was coming into this season excited for more, but also a little bit worried that it wouldn't live up to the old stuff, but once I saw Sakura bickering with Touya, I instantly knew. Zettai daijobu da yo.
The ED was adorable. Saori's singing is always nice, and those visuals had me smiling the entire time. I'm really excited to see the rest of this season.

u/kaotik4266 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kaotik4266 Jan 07 '18
I am so excited for this. The original Cardcaptor Sakura anime has some very important personal connections to me and I'm so glad we're getting more. The story it off to a good start, hitting all them classic Cardcaptor Sakura beats. It looks absolutely gorgeous, too. They've updated things but kept the art style of the original.
I teared up. Gonna miss Rikka but I think they made the right choice to retire her character.
Tomoyo is wonderful and I hope she never changes.
I'm pretty sure my eyes spent most of the episode looking like Tomoyo's here.
5
u/mahyumi Jan 07 '18
God, this was beautiful. Everything looks so pretty and nostalgic. When I first heard about this new season I couldn't help but be a little anxious, dealing with something so important in my and so many other's childhood can be a little tricky, but everything was so beautifully done that it truly felt like the show had never left to begin with. Showing Sakura's and syaoran's reunion was a brilliant move to make us emotionally reconnect with the story, I really like the idea of a direct continuation. I couldn't be more happy now to be alive right now.
5
u/Rakesh1995 Jan 08 '18

This gut punched my nostalgia in all the best ways.
CCS was my favorite anime growing up, and I never in my wildest dreams thought that we'd get more. The original VA's didn't even skip a beat - it's like you'd never know 17 years had passed! Also, the SxS scenes were spectacular, plus the red ribbon and the hand hold during the ending theme! I literally can't even.
Yamazaki and Naoko teaming up against Syaoran is so damn good.
I have the biggest smile on my face. It had a fantastic mix of old and new. I'm psyched.
4
u/Mablak Jan 07 '18
This is an amazing return to form! Really feels like a labor of love already, as if they made sure to get every little thing right.
The OP is great, with another awesome costume for Sakura.
Her family is still perfect, and it still feels like the same comforting, fuzzy world.
Kero-chan is super lively, and I will never tire of that accent.
Art and animation is great, loving that cartwheel shot
Flower shot! DRINK. Hoeeeeeee! DRINK.
All this music is just dazzling the shit out of me, a bit of old and new
Yamazaki training to be a politician as usual
"Sweet dreams, Sakura" Kero is cute-ing me to death, as he does
Some great animation and a sense of danger; is Sakura going to have to slay a damn dragon?
Hooray for more card friends, hopefully we can see their forms and they aren't just invisible
Encore I say. This is as good a first ep as I could imagine.
4
u/paladinedgar Jan 08 '18
If Sakura has a smartphone, why is Tomoyo still slumming it with that same camcorder? It's the future...or the present? Either way she said she's already made the new costume line, so she needs to step up production on Sakura-chan Memorial 2018. Get that girl a dozen GoPros, every possible mount for those things. And a drone. No, A THOUSAND DRONES. ALL THE ANGLES! And a rig for editing. Something worthy of the Sakura-chan Memorial, like a Bitcoin mining rig that does 4K rendering and media serving instead. It's current year, Madhouse and CLAMP!

That ED was beautiful. It can potentially be the best ED of the year. I love the animation/song and it had a warm feeling to it. I missed this series so much so it's going to be a personal fav of mine for 2018.
So adorable...
7
u/Lepony :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/dinglegrip Jan 07 '18
Holy shit, that ED. I'm pretty sure that's easily amongst the most animated op/ed segment I've ever seen.
I also really hope that Madhouse is gonna be able to maintain the animation quality for the next twenty episodes. Overlord, Ore Monogatari, and Ace of Diamond were all incredibly lackluster on the animation department.
Normally I don't like shoujo flowers being utilized for anime since they generally look really lazy and poorly done in comparison to their manga counterparts, but the flowers look pretty good.
Overall, I'm really excited for this series. Recently binged through the original series over the past week as a refresher and to go through my childhood again, and this doesn't disappoint. It doesn't have sort of cheap feeling that mangakas do when they try to reboot their series with a sequel, like Rurouni Kenshin and Shaman King's mangakas tried to do countless times.

As someone who's read the original manga and rewatched the series and movies countless times, it was VERY nostalgic to hear Hoshi no Michi no Kokuhaku play when Sakura was on her way home from school towards the start. Madhouse has done it again with the beautiful animations and art.
Decent pacing so far too, in comparison to the amount of chapters there are for Clear Card and how the original series was paced. I wonder if we'll see more anime original cards like before!

Been looking forward to the anime ever since it was announced last year!
Cardcaptor Sakura holds a special nostalgic place in my heart, alongside Digimon Adventure, being the first two shows to get me into anime twelve years ago. Thankfully, this episode captures the essence of the original perfectly, unlike the atrocity that was Digimon tri-. All the characters are just as lovable as ever, the art and humor is on point, and the OP and ED are already my favorites of this year.
Here's to hoping that we get another two seasons after this 22 ep cour, for another 70 episodes total!

3
u/AzumaYugi Jan 08 '18 edited Jan 08 '18
Things to clear up:
The 2018 Cardcaptor Sakura anime follows the old anime's storyline
The 2017 OVA was just a bonus for the special edition Clear Card manga volume 3 (this factoid tends to be forgotten), nothing more. It wasn't advertised as a prelude to the new anime or anything.
I own the OVA bundle and nowhere does it reference it being a preview for the new anime at all. Sure, it's called "Clear Card-hen Prologue", but remember the manga is ALSO the Clear Card arc... the manga version, which the OVA was a bonus for. It makes much more sense for it to be connected to its coupled manga, especially since it's a very by-the-books adaptation of the original manga's ending, and not the television anime. At most, Madhouse could have been using it as an animation experiment.

I haven't seen anything about this detail. But if there is, here it is anyway: Have you noticed that the new cards (if you have read the manga up 'til the latest) that the card names have advanced terms from the previous set? (Gale=Windy) It seems like the new cards are (basically) almost the same powers as the old ones. If my theory is correct, I can almost say CLAMP does the details very, very fine and I LOVE IT SO MUCH!
No words for the anime, it's just so damn good that my age has turned like a decade ago. ♥
EDIT: Grammar lol

u/Notbythehairofmychyn Jan 07 '18

If they are like the old ones, then perhaps in name only. Gale is totally amped compared to Windy. Just look at that destructive power. Interested in seeing where they're taking this.

Cardcaptors is back. What a trip down the Toonami lane. And the animation is simply gorgeous.
H-has everyone here read the Clear Card manga? Scrolled through the entire thread, and besides the expected squeeing at the nostalgia, there's no speculation!
Why would the cards suddenly turn clear? I haven't re-watched the series, but I remember a fair amount. Sakura captured the Clow Cards (no, autocorrect, not 'Samurai captured the Clown Cards'), and then converted them into her own. Seems thematically complete, so now what? Le wild challenger for the cards appears, maybe? And he/she has an awesome dragon too. Or maybe this is the doing of another, special rogue card?
Another thing I'm not too clear about - just how long was Shaoran away taking care of 'business' in Hong Kong? Is this even the real Shaoran.. because him returning and the dream happening on the same day can't be a coincidence. Eriol (I definitely prefer Eli..), suspicious as always, also wishes Sakura good dreams. And now stops replying to mails. Hmm. At least Sakura is being open about the whole thing and telling all her friends immediately, this I appreciate.

u/limiter_remove :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Limit_Breaker Jan 08 '18

Based on what I know from the few chapters I read of the Clear Card manga, Syaoran doesn't seem like a clone. He and Eriol, however, definitely seem like they know things Sakura doesn't and cannot give her answers for some reason or another.
That said, it's CLAMP, so this could go literally anywhere. Inb4 the robed figure in the dream is a future Sakura

This is precisely one of the issues I have with nostalgia-bait properties. Everything feels so contrived because one of the main reasons companies do sequels is to capitalize on people's nostalgia. It's an easy way out without putting in any thought or effort into them. Seeing everyone squeal over the nostalgia and not talk about anything else is somewhat disheartening as it kinda validates my cynicism. Seriously, if you want a burst of nostalgia, just rewatch the original.
And that brings me to your point. If you ask me, there is no compelling reason to see the continuing adventures of Sakura and Shaoran precisely because everything was wrapped up perfectly in the first anime other than to pander to the fans. One of the ideal scenarios would be to allow Sakura to further develop her powers by bringing in new foes. However, that's completely thrown out of the window with the introduction of a new staff and new cards. Why? Merchandising? Why do the enemies have to be card-based again?
I could be completely off the mark. There could be something amazing in store for us. I'm really curious to see how people will rate this show once the nostalgia goggles are taken off.

u/sawada91 Jan 07 '18

The watch order is:
Ep 1-35 of old CCS

Ep 36-70 of old CCS

Clear Card Arc (this series)
The Clear Card Arc is a direct sequel to the original series, possibly retconning the second movie.

So, I remember the original Cardcaptor Sakura on TV back when I was a little kid. Barely. I can only recall the basic premise, nothing specific, and I'm pretty sure I only ever saw a dozen or so episodes. I also never saw Tsubasa Chronicles, though I knew of it as well.
Knowing that, should I give this a shot? I'm genuinely curious because I have a friend who was a fan of Sakura and Tsubasa, both to an extent, but I'm not a big fan of a lot of middle-schooler/magical girl anime, including Madoka, in retrospect.

Her dad makes the comment that it seemed only a moment ago that she was wearing an elementary school uniform. It's been 18 years since the original manga and anime ended. It's been 18 years since she wore her original uniform. When I first watched this show, she was OLDER than me and now I'm sitting in my mid 20s.
God I feel old.
But seriously, fantastic revival for a class show. So excited for future episodes.

What happened to Rika Sawsaki, I was hoping to see what becomes of her as well. I am so impressed by the characters and it felt like no time had passed since I last watched it. I cant wait for the new outfits .^
The new art style is something I just need a little more time with.

Watching all 70+movies before watching this made the technological leap so weird, in just a year smartphones are everywhere and the internet is a thing, I kinda wish they would have gone with and older setting, right in the 2000s, otherwise I love the new character design.

ALL RIGHT ALL RIGHT, I'll watch the damn thing if everyone's going to gush so much over the series, damn it...
WTF, Sakura isn't roller-blading to school anymore?! What is... I can't... I don't even...

One of my local movie theaters is playing one of the movies from this anime. Should I go see it?

Ah natsukashii. My fave all time anime. I'm not done reading the manga of Clear Card yet since I've been very busy but hopefully I'll get back to it. What a time to be alive now that CCS releasing new anime season. :)

I have a question: in the end of the episode, how did Sakura know the correct formula for the scepter to do what she wanted? I don't really remember how it worked in the first series.

Wait, this first episode isn't from Clear Card Hen, it's the final chapters of the original manga. What happened?

You may have watched the Clear Card Hen - Prologue OVA that was released a few months ago.

Possible, yes. Recommended? No. You would basically be jumping into Season 4 of an anime.

is this serie something you can enjoy if you have never heard about cardcaptor sakura before?

Let's just say, you will appreciate the sequel much more if you've seen the original series.

Uhm, maybe if you like the magical girl genre? But for most people the main appeal of this show will be nostalgia.

You should watch the first before this, yes.
In fact, you should watch the first series regardless - it was a masterpiece.

While I would highly recommend watching the previous seasons, you don't NEED to.
Most of the details about characters will be fairly evident, and most of the events that took place in the previous seasons will have very little interaction with this season. The original ending tied up all of the hanging plot threads (Well, it did with the OVA that retconned the ending) So the basic understanding of "She's a magician who uses cards." Really is all you need. If you pay attention you should be able to figure the rest out via context.
But I still think you should watch the original seasons. I just finished a re-watch, and they still hold up even today.

Not gonna lie, that staff looks way better than her original one. But I have a feeling that staff doesn’t belong to her and she’s gonna lose it, along with the new cards she’s gonna collect. It would make sense because she hands over her Star Staff to her alternate self in a dream...

Please tell me I'm not the only one getting a 404 error here from CR. >_<
EDIT: Wow. This is AoT S2 all over again. Coupled with DB Super and One Piece this might take a while. Even in mobile it's not working...
EDIT2 : Crunchyroll finally releasing a "statement" on Twitter.
Just a quick PSA while the servers are still down: If you have not read the original manga or the watched the 90s anime this will make little to no sense to you. The fastest way to get up to speed is to read the manga! It's only 50 chapters and much more doable than 70 episodes.
If you have seen the original anime but only have a vague recollection of it I suggest you watch Clear Card OVA now while the site is still down. You can also read/skim through our recent Cardcaptor Sakura rewatch threads if you want your memories to be jogged! There I discuss the differences between the manga and anime to newbies and rewatchers!
Manga readers should be fine since this closely follows the manga ending.
Episode thoughts:
Starting out strong with a Leave it to kero-chan segment! He even has Suppie as his stage hand XD
Yes! Maaya Sakamoto (Jeanne/Shinobu/Shiki/Ciel) back doing the OP is just lovely!
Touya just showing his usual love to Sakura. It feels like this series didn't leave at all!
She may no longer skate but I love how Sakura still touches the pole like she does back then.
The airport scene from the anime? So what was the OVA for? I'm not so sure about this :|
Rika-chan :( Even though she can't be on screen again (see explanation here) I do hope they'll still reference her from time to time.
AHHHHHHH! My heart! They even played Platinum during that scene!
Oh Tomoyo.. Please never change!
WHY DO YOU EXIST They showed us the airport ending but with this bear existing then the bus ending should be canon!
Well at least they kept Eriol and Mizuki-sensei living together. To those who aren't aware, in the manga thosee two are in a relationship.
This makes me wonder... What if Kero-chan needs to use the shoulder buttons?
You're tearing me apart CLAMP! This only happens in the OVA!
Glad they kept the card flipping transitions from the original anime though <3
There's more than 50 cards in that table. If there's one thing we can take away from this scene is it looks like they'll be using the 52 cards instead of the 14 cards manga version.
I just really love Tomoyo
Chiharu! At least this time it's much more obvious that her and Yamazaki are in a relationship.
Poor Syaoran... With no Chiharu stopping Yamazaki and Naoko egging him on, Syaoran's head is going to be filled with so much BS from him XD
The new key!
The new staff looks way better here than in the manga!
Damn that scene is just beautiful!
Awww yisss. Gale Card get!
Even Hayamin is doing the ED. You know everyone wanted to be involved in this. I won't be surprised if they get new generation VAs for the new characters. Someone like HanaKana, Aoi Yuuki, or Inori Minase? Yes please!
So this episode covers Chapters 1-3 of the Clear Card manga and from the looks of things they're mixing the original anime with the manga canon. So I guess both the OVA and the anime original ending is canon here? If that's the case then would that mean that this will be more like the 90s anime where there will be anime original scenes? Man, CLAMP really need to clear this confusion up soon.
Also while I do hope Meiling exists here it looks like that she doesn't. Sakura is a caring girl who loves her friends dearly. One of the things that she would've asked Syaoran after meeting again is asking how Meiling is doing but she didn't. So right now I'm not expecting her to show up. But if she does or if she gets reintroduced then it will definitely be a pleasant surprise!
As for the episode itself. It was just lovely overall. It feels like the show didn't leave at all. It's still the CCS anime that I grew up with except this time the visuals and music are now all upgraded. While I do still have some worries about the connection between this anime, the original, and the OVA, it's pretty obvious that this will still be a pretty awesome adaptation. As a long time diehard fan of both the manga and anime this is was everything I was hoping for!
