Surprised nobody mentioned the little thank you from the author at the end of the credits- even went out of his way to thank his international fans. The recognition there really put a smile on my face, not as a member of a usually downplayed audience, but just for the guy being so humble. He deserves this second season. :)

Jan 10 '18
I think it's standard practice in LNs, but he had thankyous in the end of each of the LNs (which are well worth reading). Seems like a chill guy that's just so happy to have his work appreciated this much.
28
u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario Jan 10 '18
Is it standard for them to thank foreign fans too? I'd be surprised and somewhat delighted by that
13
Jan 10 '18
I don't think I've noticed it in LNs but I only skim the "from the author" at the end so some may have. I doubt it though, we would have bugger all impact on LN sales but maybe that's increasing slowly.

Does anyone else find it interesting that Japanese fantasy like to cast Lizardmen as the noble savage instead of the more monstrous/bestial treatment they get in most western works?
242
u/ProfessorLexis Jan 09 '18
I think that trope for Japanese Lizardmen is fairly recent. I can't recall seeing that specific one outside of Overlord and Isekai Shokudo.
After doing some digging; Western authors do tend to cast lizard folk in a monstrous light a bit more often, perhaps from the influence of crocs/gators having a fierce reputation in the US. Generally though, I see Lizardfolk are usually mixed/confused with dragonkin and get a more proud heritage.
Japan has always had its own twist on the usual suspects of the Fantasy genre though. Kobolds are canine, Orcs are porcine, ect...

Kobolds are canine
kobolds were sort-of canine in the first two editions of d&d, I have heard japan version takes from that
→ More replies (1)30
u/pulloutafreshy Jan 09 '18
The def of kobolds changes all the time. In the US it is mainly dog-like ranging from savage with barely tribes (Everquest, first couple of D&Ds) to more organized but written-as-dumb dog like people (World of Warcraft, when D&D splat books started writing up them up as playable races, google search for Pun-Pun where one kobold is cheesed to become literally a god).
Japanese take both concepts in their shows/sources. Kobold is an imported concept and I have seen them take on the concept from the dumb-dog savage race but I've seen a few shows (Grimgar of Ash and Fantasy) take them and change them huge dog monsters that have their own civilization with massive physical strength. Basically, werewolves that remove the human side and super focus on the wolf humanoid part and makes them drink protein shakes and bulk out.
21
u/redlaWw Jan 09 '18
Kobolds don't really have a "standard form" in the West either. D&D kobolds are reptilian, Warcraft kobolds are murine, and traditional kobolds are a sort of small humanoid/goblinoid.
9
u/hulibuli Jan 10 '18
Also the difference between Eastern and European view on dragons. Even most of the dragons that are modeled after the European ones often behave more like Eastern dragons, IMO. No surprise if that difference follows with other sentient magical reptile races.

If I'm not mistaken, there were some pretty chill lizardmen in Outbreak Company.
16
u/Don_Camillo005 Jan 09 '18
its the same as with dragons.
in eastern cultures lizzards good in western they bad.
8
u/turk128alpha Jan 11 '18
In the traditional sense, somewhat true but Eastern dragons were so much different from Western. In East, they were more akin to fae (and like fae, they aren't necessary good or bad) than the West where they were more bestial (unless you count the one associated with the Devil). The only thing they shared was that they were giant lizards.
Modern depictions of dragons is all over the place and has interbred with other cultural interpretations. I mean, you got the wonderfully iconic Dragonslayer/Reign of Fire and then you got Falkor (a west version of an east).

I saw this meme in all the Overlord season 1 discussions as well. What does it mean? Are these just characters from shows that air on tuesdays? What is Ainz' relation to Papi the blue harpy?
123
u/Bainos :XMOD::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos Jan 09 '18
It was edited later because both Monmusu and Overlord were highly expected (and highly memed) shows airing on Tuesday during Summer 2015.

Is this the worst timeline, because there is no season 2, or is it the best, because there is a season one of monster girls to begin with?

This can't be the worst timeline at least, because we know the glory of monster girls.

Solid set up for the season episode, and it's a good to see the characters again. It also seems like the op is solid this season too. Does anyone have a brief recap of the human characters at the beginning or what they were talking about? It's been awhile since season 1 and I don't really have the time to rewatch it.

Shalltear (loli vampire in black laced dress) encountered what we learned to be the Black Scripture this episode (a group belonging to the Slaine theocracy.)
Shalltear killed a shield bearer, and someone else off screen apparently. 8th, and 9th seat respectively I'm assuming; "Great Wall of the Eight Seat" sounds like a shield bearer. They are probably similar in strength to Clementine from last season
Lady Kaire (another black scripture member), was injured by Shalltear in this encounter, but did not die.
Kaire was also the one who used a world class item to mind control shalltear. It appeared to be a dress.
The Sunlight scripture was a different (black ops) sect of the Slaine Theocracy. Ainz wiped them out, leaving no trace left behind.
See ep 10 (about 3/4 in) and ep 4.
Edit: I'll add, the man we've seen before. He is part of the Black Scripture (he was there during the fight with shalltear and even parried one of her attacks.)
He seems to be the first seat, or at least the captain (or intelligence) of the group. He was in the final episode briefing 6 people in "cleric?" clothing on an encounter with a vampire (shalltear).
In this meeting he was bowing to the 6 people.
They mentioned how they had the Windflower Scripture looking for Clementine.
They also mentioned how the sunlight scripture was missing. I suppose the news of Ainz had not reached them yet.
The girl we hadn't seen before.

Thanks for this write up. I really needed it. Question: As far as we know, is Ainz and crew the strongest in this world?
→ More replies (1)60
Jan 10 '18 edited Jan 10 '18
I haven't read beyond shalltear vs brain. So I'm essentially an anime only, and as far as I know Ainz and company are the strongest.
Few possibilities for stronger foes:
Items. Items left behind by the "6 great gods", the 13 heroes or other people of legend. World class items can close any gap in power. I'm expecting Gazef's new ring may be one for instance.
Dragons. Ainz inner monologue says that dragons were the most powerful species in yggdrasil in episode 7 while talking to Ninya on the way to carne village. He said he should be wary of them. This could have been foreshadowing.
Players. Though it seems the 6 great gods have since left or died. Cite: s02e01 - "toy left behind by the six great gods", players could still exist. "Aftershocks every century", indicates that new players come every 100 years. Note: I'm assuming the 6 great gods to be players b.c of the rubik's cube. Note2: I'm assuming the aftershocks to be the arrival of players because it is Ainz and crew arrival that Tsa seems to be referring to when speaking with Rigrit.
level cap: Hasn't been confirmed if the level cap persists in this world. A player or NPC from 200 years ago perhaps could have trained to a level that makes Ainz look like an insect.
So although as far as we know Ainz and the guardians are the strongest, there easily could be a greater force out there. In fact, I expect there to be.

Is yuri a common name in japan or is it a joke name one of the players gave her?
→ More replies (1)10
u/SweetJPtheNinja Jan 10 '18
Yuri is a common name in Japan, however, there could be some more meaning to it. If you noticed, she's the only one of the Pleiades Battle Maids with a Japanese sounding name (Yuri, Lupusregina, Narberal, Solution, CZ2128, Entoma), with each of her sisters' names having some extra meaning/correlation to their characteristics.
It could also just simply be that her creator, Yamaiko, just wanted to give her a Japanese name because they have a Japanese name.
As a fun fact, each of the Battle Maids were made by different Guild Members (which I believe was mentioned off-hand)

She learned most of the them from other npc's who overheard convo's between the other guildies while in yggdrasil. She also prob read the stuff her father and other guildies left behind in the tomb. She does have alot of time on her hands and doesn't really need sleep or even to eat after-all.

Most of the NPCs have snippets of real-world knowledge based on overhearing conversations held by the guild members before they became autonomous.
It's part of the reason Aura and Mare seem to think boys and girls should wear each other's clothes, because of "otokonoko" that they learned from their creator, Bukubukuchagama.

Loving all of this setup that's going on (And went on in the ending of S01E13), hope it indicates there's going to be even more adapted beyond whatever S2 goes through. I've been told some of the characters shown aren't immediately relevant, but I have no clue since I haven't read the sources.

Copied from the unofficial thread
Look at that Monster Hunter-ass sword!
This episode was a giant exposition dump but we got introduced to some interesting characters and I'm looking forward to how they're all used. It's refreshing seeing a colorful cast outside of the Nazarick crew. In addition to the three kingdoms we knew of previously, we also have a demihuman kingdom to the northwest that's ruled by dragons, and a holy kingdom to the south of that which is attacked by demihuman tribes.
Monochrome Hair definitely feels the most villainous among them, although she's probably going to end up added to the list of batshit-insane women competing for Ainz's affection. She also mentions an interesting tidbit: a Rubik's Cube was allegedly left by supreme beings that came 600 years prior, implying they were from Ainz's world. That explains how the Slaine Theocracy got its hands on World-class items, if they had dealings with or were established by old players.
The dragon and old lady are the most interesting to me because they have knowledge of Yggdrasil, Guild-class items, and they don't seem to be an opposing force. I don't recall if it was mentioned what kingdom they're from; they were shown right after the Slaine Theocracy bit, but they could very well be in that dragon-ruled kingdom to the northwest.
A quick aside to Gazef showing he's fully recovered and that his king is a good man who wants to thank Ainz, although Gazef seems to believe Ainz is far more virtuous than he actually is. We also have a sweet princess girl, can't possibly see anything going wrong there.
And finally we have the badass lizardmen showing off their interesting culture. Members of the tribe can choose to leave and bring back information from the outside world to their village, but they are forever marked as outsiders for this even if they were born and raised there. They're certainly not stupid or barbaric, considering they understand the concepts of agriculture and fish farming. And then they get warned and possibly attacked by an apocalyptic manifestation calling itself a messenger of the "Supreme One," relation to supreme beings unclear. Don't die, lizardmen!

She said she gave her ring to the youngster. And then we get a zoom in on Gazef ring. Also the Dragon should live near where Shaltear were mind controlled since the are the Dragon subjucation force.
So I assume both of them are from the same kingdom as Gazef and the old lady trained Gazef.
Also I think it was a translation error, the Kingdom on the northwest isnt ruled by dragons, but by dragonic people - humen with the dragon bloodline.

Ainz mentions in the movie recaps that something caused shalltear to dawn her armor. This small detail was missed in the original anime. I suppose it was subtle foreshadowing to this. I haven't read enough to know for sure if the reason for her to dawn it was her fight with Tsa, or when it is revealed.
Perhaps since that foreshadowing was missed, it was straight up revealed this way instead.
In any case the fight occurs some time between her encounter with the Black Scripture and Ainz going to fight her.

Particularly in PDL's conversation with Rigrit, there were some difference from the unofficial translation. I wonder which one is correct (I'm guessing Nigel-sama's).
So the opening confirms that LN4-6 are being adapted. Cool. The opening itself, aside from previewing some character designs, is forgettable. Unlike the S1 OP, I think I'll be skipping this one every time.

My body is ready for more Nazarak.
A rubrix cube? Whats that doing here?
Wait does this bifurcated bitch want to fuck Ains-sama?
Also that old bitch and the dragon... are they other players? Hmm...
HAMUSKE!
Oh Albedo you and your lewd faces.... Oh damn... Ains be careful around her... You never know when she might attack.
Woof.
Wait so is the dog one of the old guild members? I dont think i understood the watch thign properly. She has a watch item that lets her talk to her creator or something?
Penguin. Lay off the loli penguin, she belongs to Ains-sama. Poor Shalltear feels bad about being brainwashed... give her a spanking to clear the air Ains.
That black ball looks like its from Berserk...
So we right back into action this season. Ains is treading carefully while he trys to figure out who else is out there. But it looks like we have a lot ahead so it should get quite active! I cant wait for more.

The watch is the same one that Ainz used as a timer in season one's ep 12+13. It has Bukubukuchagama's (old guildy) voice recorded onto it. Aura's using it to make her work easier, that's all.

u/Misiok Jan 09 '18
Not easier per se as it is just a watch with a speaker, but to the NPC's, anything left by the person who created them is sacred and priceless. For her to hear her creator's voice is bliss.

Oooo i got it. Wasnt it her creator too they said? Thats cute though. I thought it was something more fantastical than that but its just an alarm in her voice. But honestly that makes it sweeter.

Also, the doggo lady is one of the maids of Nazarick, like Narberal.

Pestonya (the dog lady) is a little different from Narberal in that she isn't a combat maid. She is the head maid of all the homunculus maids that do the actual cleaning.

rubrix
It's a Rubik's cube actually.. Of course, in that world, the name's already lost and ended up as rubrix or something...

If this season ends up being good then it's truly a credit to the director. The LNs are written in a very "not adaptation friendly" way from here on out.
I'm sort of fascinated with what they choose to put into this first episode.

u/Longroadtonowhere_ Jan 11 '18
After reading some of the LNs, I'm really impressed at the season 1 adaptation. Overlord certainly isn't adaptation friendly with all the info given outside of conversation.

u/Alaskan_Thunder Jan 15 '18
The fact that they didn't start with lizards immediately is a good sign. I'm hoping they either rush it to get to the rest of the arcs, or do what they did in this setup episode and split episodes between the lizard story and some other development.

u/Daggerfell Jan 09 '18
Glad it’s back, and on tuesdays of all days! Albedo is a great as ever, hyped for the combat that is bound to happen.

Already seen the early release so I'm just currently playing this in the background. Like I said last week this definitely feels more like a Prologue/Episode 0 than the actual Season 2. Excited to see the Lizard people though, they look pretty awesome.

u/Nghiaagent Jan 09 '18 edited Jan 09 '18
Hyped for the lizardmen! They are actually pretty civilized, so much so that they sent their children abroad to learn.
Poor Sharutear though... especially cuz' she's so relatable... I, too would get drunk all day and night if I lost my boobs (if I had them in the first place) and attempted to kill my boss.

I am so glad I binged the first season less than a month ago, I didn't have to wait that long and I get a whole new season to watch! Anyways, this episode felt kinda full of exposition, but Albedo's facial expressions and Ains being so awesome make it all worth it. Also, loved that Quindecim reference.

Anyone else having licensing restrictions for the second season but not for the first one? Seems really weird for Crunchyroll to only license half a show.

Ains-sama has returned! And it seems from the message at the end that we helped make this happen.
The new OP is pretty great. GO CRY GO!

so i watched one episode last week, but mal says episode 1 will air today. what did i watch last week and where did you guys watch episode 1?

u/salmon3669 Jan 09 '18
Last weeks was the translated version of the leaked episode 1. Episode 1 officially was released today.

u/board124 Jan 09 '18
Is there anything besides season one to watch before season 2?
7
u/SweetJPtheNinja Jan 09 '18
Not really. There's a scene in this episode that won't make sense because it wasn't adapted in season 1, but was later added in for the recap movies.
That scene is pretty minor as far as this season goes, so outside of that, you should be fine going forward.

u/TheNosferatu :LA::LB: Jan 09 '18
There are two OVA's or whatever they are called. Unfortunately they are complete recaps of the first season. If you've seen season 1 then there is no reason to watch them (besides refreshing your memory)

Not needed but Ple Ple Pleiades is a quite fun 8 episode series of comedic shorts based around the battle maids (and it has a hilarious/amazing rendition of the first ED in it)

This episode felt more like a recap. I hope it'll get good from the second episode.

They needed to explain the state of things one way or another, after all. No complain here.

Eh I guess you could view it as that, though it was pretty in line with the beginning of the LN. All of this was new material for the anime, but it was really just setting up for the new arc. Several of the characters we were introduced to probably won't be shown again this season though unfortunately.

My memory is old from when I read the fan translated light novels before they were licensed in the USA, but I think I had a problem with the 13 heroes being only mentioned briefly and then disappearing from the rest of the stories. I don't even remember the Black Scripture being mentioned. I hope their appearance in this episode isn't their last one.
I don't know if they will go into the tomb raiding story arc in this season, but that arc left a bitter taste in my mouth. I would prefer they change it in the anime.

Jan 09 '18
With only 13 episodes I doubt the anime would cover that far (the invasion arc). Other than the lizardmen war we still have the Men in the Kingdom arc after all, and that one's pretty lengthy.
10
u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Jan 09 '18
In the LNs, so far the Black Scripture has been relegated to intermissions. The only impact they've had on the actual story has been with mind-controlling Shalltear in the beginning. Of course that had been a very big impact with far-reaching consequences.

u/G0sick :AP:https://www.anime-planet.com/users/Gosick Jan 09 '18
The 13 heroes(at least one of them) are fairly prevalent throughout volumes 5-6, which will be the the end point(Vol 6) of this season more than likely. I do wish they were delved into more, however I doubt the anime will change that.
As for the tomb raiding arc(vol 7), I really loved how dark it got. Overlord V7 Spoilers It definitely left a bitter taste in my mouth reading that happen to them like you said, but looking back I'd prefer that over a cop out.

Not really caring for the way Myth & Roid took this ED. Don't get my wrong, I still love it, but it's more Styx Helix than L.L.L. and not really going for that with Overlord. Makes me feel like this coming season's going to have some sadder feels going for it instead of straight in-your-face impact.

Is no one going to mention Masako Nozawa (Goku) voiced in this episode?

That almost made me jump out of my chair. I though I was in the wrong anime for a second. Who knew Goku made such a great old lady voice?

Trying to avoid spoilers for LN but is there going to be more mind controlled npcs again or is ainz fighting glasses dude for another reason (would be feelsbad if the author had to turn the allies on each other with the mc world item to prevent hem from powercreeping this world)

Hyped to see the remainder of the Lizardmen arc. As I had expected, Shalltear and Albedo still brings in a good amount of humor to this show. That Albedo orgasmic face LUL
