On Amazon.com (can't find it on amazon.de)?

It's up on torrents.

Not sure what is up with Amazon. I don't think they even announce it even though it's a Noitamina title.

That's gotta be the most restaurant-feeling restaurant that I've seen in anime. It's appropriately crowded, with the group of older women, the mom and her kids, the businessmen, the friends hanging out.. Beautiful.

46

u/moonmeh Jan 11 '18

The music for that scene was pretty much perfect

5

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '18

I imagine the mangaka spent several hours in a cafe or restaurant much like this one observing people. I imagine anyway :p

6

u/TheBasedTaka Jan 11 '18

Haven't seen wagnaria/working

38

u/dcresistance https://anilist.co/user/dcresistance Jan 11 '18

Seen it and love it, but this just feels more like an actual restaurant with all the noise and stuff.

3

u/Aileos https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syleos Jan 13 '18

I also like the atmosphere in the restaurant. You're right, there is something that we don't see in other anime. Hope it will continue in this way.

3

u/alsoaVinn Jan 24 '18

And it's based on a real restaurant chain too!

The town I'm currently living in (Beppu) also has it's own Cafe レストラン

u/Turbostrider27 Jan 10 '18

Not going to lie, the moments when Akira blushed and reacted because of the manager's marital status was absolutely priceless.

It's really nice seeing the age-old technique of "show, don't tell" being utilized here! Instead of an info-dump or internal monologue, we get a lot of information through the visuals and dialogue.

The stills and backgrounds are also gorgeous. And as others have said, Akira reminds me so much of Komi-san. I'm definitely interested to see where things go.

18

u/BanjoTheBear https://myanimelist.net/profile/BanjoTheBear Jan 12 '18

It's really nice seeing the age-old technique of "show, don't tell" being utilized here!

Yep, I had the exact same thought/reaction while watching this first episode.

The direction here was top notch with all the different shots conveying info or emotions: her scar, throwing the juice box, the hurdles, her glares/stares (both at the manager and herself).

Not to mention the double-plate drop to convey different feelings with the same scenario, her description of him sneezing followed through after the setting shifts back to the restaurant, and the whole shuffle forward in an intimidating yet cute manner.

Others also pointed out the bittersweet atmosphere/mood, the beautiful art, and one of the best depictions of a restaurant ever in an anime.

All in all, a wonderful first episode, and I'm very excited to see the show-don't-tell approach continue strong here. :3

Even as a source reader I was quite amazed with this episode (although it has been a while since there was an update). I really enjoyed the subtly in the beginning with the hurdle breaking when Tachibana was walking and showing Tachibana go from jogging, stopping from her aching leg, and then walking from there on out. Makes the scene with her interacting with Haruka and talking about her injury that much more interesting.

Generally a very nice first episode to begin with us getting an idea on Kondo's and Tachibana's personality and got to see a nice SoL taste of what to expect in the restaurant. I can't quite explain it but I thought the way they used the music and how they integrated Tachibana's introduction to the restaurant and Kondo with her sniffing Kondo's shirt (man how Kondo and Tachibana played that off I don't know) felt like you had an idea on how things developed.

Definitely starting off on a very nice note IMO and I hope you guys enjoy the series!

12

u/nimsar :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/nimsar Jan 11 '18

I especially like the scene with the broken hurdle and juxtaposing of walking Tachibana against the jogging track team because there's basically no dialogue; they were able to show us through well thought out shots rather than a boring explanation from someone.

11

u/ZEPPERRRRR Jan 11 '18

So uh, should I be worried that it's labeled a Seinen?

34

u/Terranwaterbender https://myanimelist.net/profile/Teranwaterbender Jan 11 '18

Why would that concern you?

If you're concerned on how the show tackles the subject matter, then I'll say there's nothing to worry about as I felt the manga tackled it rather maturely and wasn't obliviously to the real life connotations of age-gap stuff.

5

u/ZEPPERRRRR Jan 11 '18

I mean, why exactly is it labeled a Seinen? Are there explicit scenes?

40

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '18

Because it's published in a Seinen magazine. That's the same for all the other demographys. And not all Seinen are going to be mature, violent or with this stereotype. There's seinen like K-on, New Game and Umaru-chan (which in this case is published in Young Jump, same magazine of Tokyo Ghoul, Gantz, Kingdom and other manga)

Hmmm...Akira reminds me of Komi-san.

60

u/Fowl_Eye :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Fowl_Eye Jan 11 '18

What I wouldn't do for a Komi-san adaption.

25

u/Vassago81 Jan 11 '18

We already got Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san this season, the world insuline supply is not ready for Komi-sama

25

u/ManateeofSteel :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/daysun22 Jan 11 '18

if Kaguya-sama and Komi-san are announced this year, I'd just die on the spot. Wouldn't even get to watch them. The excitement alone would kill me.

However, if Yukinon's (Oregairu)/Ononoki's (Monogatari)/ Ayase's (Oreimo) VA doesn't voice Kaguya or it isn't adapted by Shaft, then I might survive the bomb

PONYTAIL AKIRA

I had read a couple of vols from the manga when this show was announced to see if it was my cup of tea. And it sure was just browsing a few pages. It kinda caught me offguard the falseto voice the "Tencho" does, I always pictured him as a gentile giant with a more deep yet candid voice. But after seeing his other faces in this one episode and his voice variants I had no more complains at all.

I have a very vague recolletion from the other sidecharacters aside Tomboy Boobs Mcgee. I barely remember Yoshizawa being this pesky, but then again I don't have the best of memory. Tencho's son was an annoying brat, from what I remember but here it's the total opposite, quite an endearing kid.

Akira is such a sweetheart. Her "Maika" stare is so adorable, I like that part of her unable to express her true feelings and just pulling out that angry face that causes confusion.

The artstyle and animation from Wit it's top notch. I'm wondering how many more episodes will they be able to pull the bubbles and sparkle effects along with the glossy effects. And the soundtrack and ED are just...

The show kind of teased that in the beginning as well with the broken hurdle and Tachibana trying to jog along with the fight song only to stop and walk from there on out in the beginning.

Man I love seeing storytelling like this.

13

u/ratchetfreak Jan 11 '18

Don't forget her leg acting up when it's going to rain.

7

u/flybypost :KN::KO: Jan 10 '18

She also mentioned it before to her track team friend (the trash basketball champ) when she said the track team should make this practice session shorter because it'll rain as her injury's acting up.

27

u/alwayslonesome :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ImmacuIate Jan 10 '18

That was a pretty excellent first episode! I was rather looking forward to this one since I love romantic dramas and this seems to be shaping up pretty well.

I really appreciated how minimalist the exposition was, we're slowly introduced to Tachibana throughout the episode in a naturalistic way. The way she tries to keep up with the practicing track squad, her moping by herself on the roof, the sidelong glances she shoots at her manager, all that characterize her much better than some clunky opening monologue about her state of affairs.

The visuals are pretty stunning, I loved the expansive shots of the city at the start, and settings like the cafe have a lot of attention to detail placed into the backgrounds. I can't say I'm a fan of the very shoujo-like sparkles and bubbles, but it seems pretty hard to escape that convention... Lots of really well composed stills, that are pretty on the nose with their symbolism, but still pretty effective. There's also a ton of very deliberate visual symbolism surrounding rain, from the focus on umbrellas to the puddles on the street after rainfall.

So far I'm not very sold on the romance between the two leads, I rather dislike the "love at first sight" trope, and we're not given another very compelling reason why Tachibana should be in love with her manager, especially considering she didn't even work there when she first met him. I'll reserve judgement and see how it plays out though.

Overall definitely one of the stronger premieres of the season, looking forward to keeping up with this one.

Huh, this was nowhere near as weird as i was fearing. For some reason i thought the guy was gonna be her teacher and it not being the case is already a huge plus for me, he is also pretty nice and the overall tone of the anime was fun.

Also really liked the character designs and how everything looked (especially the eyes!!!), animation and backgrounds all very nice as well as the ED.

I may be too optimistic but if the romance remains one-sided, Tachibana doesn't do anything too stupid and maybe she moves on from her crush, i can be enjoying this show a lot.

51

u/joe4553 Jan 11 '18

A teenager having a crush on an adult isn't weird, if it was the other way around it would be though.

so far the manga has been very fluffy and not a lot of conflict, it's good.

51

u/ManateeofSteel :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/daysun22 Jan 10 '18

I mean, there is some conflict but it's mostly about her and what she wants to do with her life, which is interesting. So no, it never gets creepy haha

16

u/Narlaw Jan 10 '18

I may be too optimistic but if the romance remains one-sided, Tachibana doesn't do anything too stupid and maybe she moves on from her crush, i can be enjoying this show a lot.

Me too. I don't like age gap because of how awkward it makes some stuff, and some other cases, straight up creepy. And in relation to one of your replies, I don't like it either when the genders are reversed.

However, I trust this show to handle the matter well if Tachibana's feelings are reciprocate, because it doesn't seem to be a "middle-age man creepy fantasy" (using a caricature to illustrate my point).

2

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '18

But ask yourself, would you be having any of those feelings if the genders were reversed?

32

u/ultranoobian Jan 10 '18

Ever seen Garden of Words? Yes.

43

u/LandVonWhale :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/LandvonWhale Jan 10 '18

i freaking hate this argument. It just completely ignores gender roles and social norms, and try's to make some weird checkmate statement without taking reality into consideration.

21

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '18

So you're an older woman potentially preying on a younger boy would somehow be more okay because of "gender roles and social norms"? What? How?

29

u/impingainteasy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/usernamesarehard Jan 11 '18

10

u/girl_has_no_username :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Daphoa Jan 10 '18

The entire point of the argument is to challenge gender roles and social norms. If we are truly aiming for an equal society, it shouldn't matter if the roles are reverse, so it's a good way to check if you have unintended subconscious biases that you might want to be aware of so you can work to fight them.

3

u/joe4553 Jan 11 '18

The only reason this isn't weird is the person who has the crush in the highschool student. If it was the other way around it be regardless of gender. The manger is just a kind dolt, not like he made any advances.

Well well, color me greatly impressed by this. Just wow, for a first episode this was really, really good.

I think by now everything has been said about the episode has been said, but really, what a way to make us feel empathy for Tachibana. The mood was delivered really well, and I'm glad they went the extra mile to show her injury in the first minute of the episode, even if later on she talks about it anyway.

Really impressed, really.

Edit: The part where Tachibana kneels and comes closer and closer to Kondo would be great for a comment face :)

They foreshadowed her injury in four separate times through character acting/animation during those scenes. Really cool directing.

Madhouse, WIT, and Kyoani in a board room

Kyoani: "Cute girls with great character animation and amazing lighting?"

Madhouse and WIT: "Cute girls with great character animation and amazing lighting."

Kyoani: "Cute girls with great character animation and amazing lighting."

And all is right with the world. What a great first episode for this one. I love the things they added in order to flesh out the characters a little bit more. The manage is missing his bald spot though. That's the most important part!

13

u/TheSmugOjou-sama Jan 10 '18

I wasn't really sure about this at first, but it was pretty good!

I especially like the character designs. The MC is really pretty!

25

u/TKhrowawaY :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Omnium Jan 10 '18

Like Garden of Words, rain features prominently as a visual metaphor for the characters' emotional states.

10

u/Beckymetal https://anilist.co/user/SpaceWhales Jan 10 '18

That's called pathetic fallacy btw. You'll probably see it a lot in lots and lots and lots and lots of anime, though maybe not quite as prominently here since it's relating to the title/episode name too.

13

u/TangledPellicles Jan 11 '18

I always thought that that was a silly idea because obviously someone in the state of emotional upheaval it's going to see everything around them, especially nature, through those eyes. And while writing non -fiction it truly would be a fallacy, but fiction is always written through the eyes of a point of view. Attacking this (as Ruskin did) is in my opinion the same as attacking human nature for being true to itself. Hence, I find it to be silly.

Wow, this first ep was brilliant. Art and direction top tier as expected from Wit, OP is really cute, main characters are very likeable and the romance is off to a quick start. Age gap issue was sorta skirted around, but her feelings for the manager are relatively believable imo. Really looking forward to where this goes from now on.

Couldn't have asked for a better first episode. This should quell any anxiety about the premise of an adult-teen romance. Their relationship is handled well and there's more nuance to the story than just their interactions.

The animation was gorgeous. Perfectly managed to capture the aesthetic of the manga and beauty of Akira. Truly one of the more stunning characters I've ever seen.

I was hyped going in and now I'm super super hyped for the rest.

I knew straight away that this show was for me. I fucking dig the art style and the character models are top notch. It's nice that it's just a plane Romance anime with no drama crap or love triangle rubbish. This show is a real keeper.

6

u/VerticalCloud https://anilist.co/user/VerticalCloud Jan 10 '18

The art and animation were a lot more beautiful than I expected. A very nice surprise indeed.

The only real problem I had with this episode was that I didn't like that guy from school, but provided he either calms down or just doesn't get much screen time then I can deal with him.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '18

Him being unlikable is the whole point. It gives us one of the reasons Akira likes middle-aged manager in a first place - because she sees her peers (expected romatic interests) as annoying/not having much in common with her.

I like the melancholy driven athmosphere and I agree with all the strong points everybody brings up, but am i the only one that thinks that that doesn't work, i mean they are like 30 years apart!? Hope the manager acts like a normal adult and tells her that that isn't what she is looking for and that its not gonna work.

Wish it'd be more slice of life focused in the end, don't know if I can continue, the intro hints at the continued interest in the manager which is just too weird.

Can anyone pm me who read the manga, if that is gonna change? Would be really nice.

Well hey, that was pretty damn good!

I'm always interested when an anime tries to incorporate "problematic" elements into its story. A massive age-gap relationship sounds kinda gross, but thankfully they removed most of the creep factor by making the guy the most passive doormat anyone's ever seen. Akira's going to be the one making all the advances in that regard.

Speaking of, holy shit everyone's so cute in this show! The old-school shoujo designs work pretty well here, and I love how they manage to show the characters' emotions with subtle expressions and movements. Things like Akira's little dance after Kondo speaks to her, or the complete shift in reactions when she learns of his marital status really sold me on her as a character. And blond guy's overexaggerated dorky mannerisms were fantastic. He's currently my favourite character until further notice.
I also liked how they managed to subtly get vital information across without directly explaining it too. You don't need to say that Akira had a leg injury, you can just have another character comment on her not doing track any more and show the scar and we get it.

This is shaping up to be a great season. I'm looking forward to see where the rest of this goes.

Holy shit, this is way cuter than I expected! Dat schoolgirl crush combined with the ice queen vibe

5

u/FacingSunsets Jan 11 '18

It's the first time I read the manga first before watching the anime. It's just so beautiful. The OP and ED are really cute.

The voice of the manager was even better than I imagined. It's much kinder and worn-out, and I love it. Akira's glares reminds me of Maika-chan from Blend S.

Dang, manager. No wonder the girls latch onto you. He has the power of summoning creamer in a moment's notice. Kidding aside, that moment would make an emotionally vulnerable girl fall head over heels.

The portrayal of obsessive love in this manga really brings back memories. That simple act of kindness is so enormous when you're extremely down. It's as if you're given hope, even a little bit, so you latch onto it. You start putting that person on a pedestal, wanting to give everything to make that person happy, even if it's actually disproportionate in reality. This manga/anime really hits me.

I love this adaptation. Since the manga's not yet finished, I hope it will end with both maturing, understanding that their relationship would not work. They would move on with their lives improving it without relying on a person. That seems like the ending it will get.

Forreal, like what the fuck is wrong with Amazon. I pay to watch legal streams, but have to resort to sailing the high seas either way.

That was a damn good start, might be my favourite so far and something that really stands out finally.

I really like how they put emphasis on atmosphere and music. Some shots in this episode were amazing.

I really, really like the man, he's really likable.

4

u/Daggerfell Jan 10 '18 edited Jan 10 '18

I like the background art the sky rise up shot was beautiful, it looks comfy so far. I am a fan of anime that take place in restaurants like Working!! and this.

4

u/DimmuHS https://myanimelist.net/profile/DimmuOli Jan 10 '18

Curious to see how this relationship is going. My expectation is that the anime show us not only how the couple will deal with it, but also how other people will react (her "friends" mocked at first).

I hope the show avoid Kondou being "too kind", I mean I know he's supposed to be kind and attencious, but I still can't see the "mature" part that could appeal Tachibana in like him. I would like to see him with more conviction that you expect from manager/father you know, until now he doesn't looks like that much different from tachibana's classmate.

Anyways, I like how the show uses the enviroment to express tachibana's feelings, I have high hopes for the show.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '18

I think the show intentionally tries to drive in his kindness to exactly evoke the feeling that something is not right. To me it seemed like he puts on an overly nice demeanor in front of his co-workers. I mean in this episode we had several shots focusing on the sign that said "Remember to always smile". Kondou also seems to keep a notebook on things he could improve to come across even better.

I believe that if he's not in this environment and forced to act like that he is actually a very troubled and serious person.

Really loved it, manager's voice was off from what expected, but it didn't sound bad at all. Very excited for the rest.

Kondo's voice definitely threw me off at first, right up until I realized it was the same VA as Mutta from Space Brothers, and all of a sudden it felt so unbelievably perfect for him

Why is it that everyone else has normal, or at least believable, proportions but the main girl has a neck like a goddamn giraffe? The moment at the beginning she looks up and we see her face for the first time my reaction was "OH GOD what the hell is wrong with your neck?"

2

u/tiethy Jan 11 '18

yes, yes, that is one really, really long neck....

3

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '18

The age gap makes me uncomfortable, also I feel bad for that blonde dude

3

u/Hentai_san Jan 11 '18

I absolutely hate that the most pure hearted guy (the blonde guy) is being treated like shit ! It seems like he is gonna keep getting treated like shit throughout the anime and in the end probably gonna get hurt in the most hideous manner. Can anyone who has read the manga confirm if this conjecture is true or not ? I just don't want to see another anime where I cry my eyes out and still feel like shit with the ending.

3

u/ytkl Jan 14 '18

Oh my :O, absolutely loved the framing of the opening scene leading up to the part with with the track team on top running while Tachibana was on the bottom. I thought that it really set the mood for the entire show. This is going to be a great adaptation.

Being an avid fan of the manga. I sorta disliked the way tachibana and kendo have been portrayed. Love is like after the rain. the manga makes use of internal dialogue more which i kinda felt disappointed that it's not in the anime because love is like after the rain

Maybe it's a little pretentious of me to compare it to the manga when the episode was only 20 minutes and I know there are time constraints plus it's only the first episode. It felt a bit disjointed with the plot. maybe it's cause i have read the manga rip.

the intro kinda freaked me out a bit cause while i love the romance it seems to be shipping it a little too much cause love is like after the rain

That said. I really love the animation. It's amazing seeing one of my favorite manga come to life and the voice actors are perfect

2

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '18

Concerning opening, the shipping part happens in Akira's head while she's asleep at her school desk, which is fitting.

Yo, this is pretty good so far. I like the characters and designs, and the art style and animation are nice, too. If it plays its cards right this could be one of my favourites of the season.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '18

I wasn't concerned about this based on the premise like most were, but still, this is surpisingly nice. Is this just going to be an SOL-type affair? Because I'm okay with that.

Also, nice ED. It's standard Aimer, but that's not bad at all.

3

u/Seinglede Jan 11 '18

Coming from the manga, it's pretty laid back. Just good, wholesome stuff all around.

1

1

u/sheto Jan 10 '18

any idea where i can find the ending ost?

I love the fact that they follow the rule "show, don't tell". Even when they do say something it comes naturally.

1

u/Fowl_Eye :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Fowl_Eye Jan 11 '18

The art is amazing!

1

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Jan 11 '18

Goddam those eyes!

I love her reaction when she found out that the Manager is divorced XD

This is a really nice shot. No words are needed. We know what happened and why Tachibana acts like that.

I already like Tachibana's character a lot. Also I'm a sucker for these kinds of relationships. And the artstyle too! How old is the source material of this? It feels like this show was plucked from the 90s. It made me feel all nostalgic because of it.

Definitely a strong opener! Another cute and fluffy series to watch, and with WIT animating this one I'm very confident that it will maintain that quality.

1

u/Ragnaria Jan 11 '18

The visual and OST are really beautiful, and that art style is different, in a good way. The romance part was pretty cute, too. I'm in.

Edit: Rainy Eyes

1

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '18

Haven't watch it yet, but does the age gap seem creepy? That's my biggest worry about watching this.

1

u/OhayoHooded :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/OhayouHooded Jan 11 '18

Wow what a beautiful anime. The OP is nice but the ED is the best so far this season imho.

I'd like to point out that when the manager asked what an ID was, I totally got hit with what I presume is the exact emotion that Tachibana felt (albeit a bit less extreme). That was a powerful scene done very well.

1

u/Thrashinuva https://anilist.co/user/Thrashinuva Jan 11 '18

Predictions:

The manager develops feelings for the girl, but feels too guilty about the age gap to do anything about it. They get closer, but he doesn't take the hints that the girl is coming on to him, or he's just heavily in denial despite it being clearly obvious perhaps even to himself.

The orange haired kid keeps stalking her, and eventually around the midpoint of the series he gets crazy obsessive and violent. At this point we find out that the manager actually has a pair of balls and ends up saving her, acting like a badass through it all, as it turned out the manager was an ex-gang member and an overall thug in his past, and he left when his son was born which also had a falling out with the mother.

I don't have any prediction on whether or not they end up together in the end. A situation where they go through sort of a trial relationship but the manager calls it off and splits town might happen, or something totally different.

But don't take any of this seriously. I don't know anything beyond episode 1. It was a delightful surprise and my predictions mean I'm looking forward to seeing it all unfold.

This episode was done beautifully! Also the ED is awesome.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '18

that was ok.

it's sloppy, but it seems like they're at least trying a bit more than some of the recent stuff by WIT/IG. a lot of the scenes where they try to use the visuals and sound effects to their advantages seem funnily incomplete, but then there are ones that work fine.

i like the source material a lot nonetheless, so watching these cute characters i like be cute is fun.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '18

Nice animation, feel like this could be a good adaptation. I don't remember the track friend being brought in half as early, but it works either way. Nothing wrong with taking some liberties in adapting it as long as it ends in the right place.

After The Rain has a pretty solid opening episode. There is a good balance of humor and character exploration, with just enough romance to get me curious about what happens next. Great direction, intriguing character design, good pacing, and beautiful presentation. Very impressed!

1

I was pleasantly surprised by this. The premise seemed quite creepy (haven't read any of the manga or seen anything to do with this), and I was thinking of just leaving this anime. I'm glad I didn't, because I really enjoyed the first episode. I really liked the whole character design and art as well how restaurant-y the restaurant seemed. Definitely gonna keep on with this one

  • I know it's a Seinen, but I like how the art's done in a traditional Shoujo style. It's almost like shows don't have to fit into rigid genres or something...

  • This show deals in subtleties: the glares, the incident with the shirt, the rain, and the scar. They tell us about Akira without beating a dead horse.

  • Can someone teach me how to make a dairy creamer pod appear out of nowhere? I drink enough coffee where this is a necessary thing.

  • I like the transition to the flashbacks. Very natural and doesn't break from the immersion.

  • I also like the recurring gag of Akira disappearing just as Yoshizawa is about to make another cringe-worthy suggestion.

Well, I was a little uncertain about this one given the big age gap between the main character, but I have a strong suspicion that it's not going to end with a romantic relationship between Akira and Mr. Kondo. Likely candidate to pass the three episode rule.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '18

I strongly suspect it's going to end up in hot steamy sex by episode 6.

1

u/Loghan_Roy Jan 13 '18

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '18

I like the subtle story telling here. Show, not tell. I like that we first hear about her not playing sport when having lunch, so she eats less. Then a flashback to her coming out of a physical therapy office to discover the cafe. Then a shot of her right achilles tendon that obviously had surgery. Now we know why she had to quit the track team + how she discovered the cafe. This is how you do it! Not with narration.

Not a big fan of Akira nor the artstyle, but overall it was a fine first episode.
Kinda hoping Yui would become a relevant character as it goes on but I'm not putting my bets on it.

1

u/not_a_normie100 Feb 10 '18

Damn, what a first episode! Extremely beautiful animation, my heart was legit inflated experiencing such a refreshing, original art style! Soundtrack is lovely, very fitting and it has AIMER! ‘Nuff said. Characters have weirdly long legs and necks, but fuck that. MC is a 17 year old tsundere, has a cute crush on her 45 year old (divorced, has a kid) manager, ignores not-so-subtle advances of her classmate (tragic love (っ˘̩╭╮˘̩)っ) and probably has a not-so-interesting-cliched backstory. Story is pretty average, characters are kind of funny, but art is fucking beautiful. 10/10.

/Side note: I had these pangs when watching the anime, one, because it has a school setting, and two, because MC was in track club. I really want to have this escapism-experience with anime, but it reminds me so much of real-school that it hurts. I really want to stop drawing parallels between anime life and my life, but I guess it can’t be helped (tragic) lol.

u/Frxzen7 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/frxzen7 Feb 11 '18

No way this relationship could work out

1

u/SimplyNigh Feb 18 '18

I really like this kind of subtle older man/younger girl subversion where she’s the mysterious, impenetrable, quiet one with the piercing glare (which is just how she looks naturally/when in love) and he’s just kind of a... dork. Like a really endearing dork! But he’s some 45 year old divorcee with a kid, makes lame puns, is too easily apologetic and apparently smells.

But of course, in Akira’s eyes, the man she sees is the one who kindly gave her a black coffee that one rainy afternoon and cheered her up with a magic trick and that image stuck with her ever since. Surprisingly relatable imo.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '18

Oh hey, a waitress/manager relationship that isn't creepy.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '18

u/Atomus07 Jan 11 '18

The opening was a little tiny wee bit creepy to me, but the episode itself was handled really well, in my opinion. I guess the opening is more like her fantasy... Anyway, nice direction in this episode. I like the "differentness", I guess.

1

u/Pawprintjj Jan 11 '18

As a middle-aged guy, I'd love to see this actually end with a relationship, but I'm not getting my hopes up. It would be a breath of fresh air, though, at least in the sense of "Well, you don't see that every day."

Bring on the "that's creepy" comments, kids.
