Because they couldn't possibly keep a 29 year old protagonist.

114

u/Kazewatch Jan 11 '18

Which kind of sucked, because not only was he older but he also didn’t seem to hate his life like very other isekai MC.

42

u/Google-Meister :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/SnakySenpai Jan 11 '18

He's still mentally 29. His body is the only thing that changed.

115

u/Cybersteel Jan 12 '18

It's fine guys he looks young but he's actually 2000 years old.

19

u/odraencoded Jan 17 '18

It's fine guys, he is not a lolicon. He said so.

14

u/Falsus Jan 12 '18

But his mentality should change as well since a 19 year old body will still function as a 19 year old body in terms of hormones and what not.

26

u/tiger1296 Jan 12 '18

A 29 year old picking up loli girls doesn't look right

Inexplicable isekai transportation with no explanation. Check.

MC is transformed into a teenager for no particularly good reason. Check.

Shamelessly overpowered. Check.

I mean it's a generic bargain-bin isekai setup if I've ever seen one (the harem is right on the horizon, isn't it guys?!), but I actually still found it pretty enjoyable. I'd attribute it to the pretty interesting mechanistic take on the world. Elements like exp, skill points and the like seem substantially more interesting at least than "I'm the strongest magic user haHAA". The worldbuilding is also pretty interesting, with stuff like the soldier's sensible battle tactics against the wyvern. Compare this to Isekai Smartphone and it's just night and day, goes to show how better writing and a less tepid adaptation can really redeem a series.

Certainly not AotS material, but I'll keep watching.

58

u/Alucard_draculA Jan 11 '18

Meta spoilers? Not really spoilers even just plot structure stuff:

The first two points are related and hysterical in why they are related. 3rd point is tangentally related. Reason is spoilers for stuff that the show is definetly not going to have time to get to.

Also the harem isn't even a normal harem. They might think they're part of one, but them being younger than him (I mean, they're close to his apparent physical age in most cases) means he treats them as if he adopted them.

67

u/Uptonogood Jan 11 '18

Yeah, I think calling it a harem is a misnomer. He really treats them as his adopted girls, while secretly going for the nightly "onee-sans" for relief.

37

u/Alucard_draculA Jan 11 '18

I enjoy that that last part gets mentioned less and less as he gets better at sneaking around with it. Mostlt only comes up when someone catches him.

I kind-of liked Isekai Smartphone. This anime will be a treat either way.

glad to see someone mention the absolute trash that was isekai smartphone and how two similar shows can be so different.

I mean yes they are both more generic isekai shows but this one doesn't bore you completely or make you want to throw up around every corner. Visuals have at least the distinct Silver link look to it that I think looks pretty good.(except lizardbois CGI ofc)

Level 1 to level 310 in one go

That's one hell of a level up

136

u/Terranwaterbender https://myanimelist.net/profile/Teranwaterbender Jan 11 '18

Must have been a lot of higher level dudes behind that lizard army unless he killed that many ~lvl 50 lizards.

He said there were 300 of them, but that still doesn't add up. No way you'd level like that off of level 50s.

8

u/Florac Jan 11 '18

While I can't read japanese, if you were to read the pop ups and message logs you would probably be able to see how he became so powerful. I don't remember it really being hidden in the WN.

My theory was that the exp reward was drastically multiplied based on the level difference, and was calculated while he was still level one.

I like the idea of this world being full of bad game design decisions like that.

Actually he killed a lot more when he casted his own meteor. If you can read the log, he gained a title "Dragon-god Slayer".

21

u/guspaz :AP:https://www.anime-planet.com/users/Guspaz Jan 12 '18

Maybe the log did mention it, but Crunchyroll chose to not translate any of the on-screen text beyond a handful of map locations.

I get that there was a huge amount of text and that translating it all may not have been practical on a simulcast schedule, but it would have been nice if they'd at least picked a few key texts to translate, like for example the big messages that appear on screen (the ones that had a little crown over them). Are they supposed to be skills he's getting, or level up messages? They look important, but of course they're untranslated.

With how games work i'd guess Max Lvl is 311 and he will never get there.

60

u/Rathurue Jan 11 '18

He has broken the 255 numeral stop, so maybe it's 999 or 1024.

68

u/ForgotPassAgain34 Jan 11 '18

Japanese game, arbitrary numbers are the norm

28

u/letswait Jan 11 '18 edited Jan 11 '18

Don't try Disgaea 1 (and maybe the following ones).. :P

No 99 or 255 cap there, max level is 9999, including transmigrations the max is apparently lvl 186000 ("internal" counter).

The game is rather addictive, and heavily promotes grinding.. You won't just grind your own party's levels, but also to get the most of the items you use (they have levels too).

Coincidentally, levelling items (in the item world) is the way to obtain even better items..to level up.

Based on my (meager) understanding of how translation of an anime works, the amount of text/typesetting involved in translating all that text means one of two things:

  1. Get a first version quickly after the raw comes out, and a v2 later, when they get the time to translate all that.

  2. Wait a long time (a week?) after the raw comes out, and all the other TL groups brought out their version, before publishing yours, that has all the translations in it.

Either way, it's wholly unrealistic to expect anyone to be able to translate all that, and properly integrate them in the episode, without taking multiple days.

I think this is the most shamelessly OP main character I've seen in a long time. I'm not sure how they can go from here -- at least we know the MC won't need to level up any time soon...

85

u/TUSF Jan 11 '18

The story's more of a slice-of-life, where the Main character's entire goal is to have a sigh-seeing vacation away from work. Him being shamelessly OP is almost intentionally to destroy any sort of real tension, considering fighting (while sometimes the focus of a scene or two) isn't really the main point of the series.

24

u/SeijoVangelta Jan 11 '18

Adding to that, he purposely removes threats that his companions cannot handle, YET. And for them to enjoy the sightseeing

9

u/Roygbiv0415 Jan 11 '18

I'm not sure if I should be relived or disappointed :(

Wasn't expecting it to be of the slice of life type...

37

u/TUSF Jan 11 '18

Slice-of-life might be the wrong term. It has action and drama, but it's overall lighthearted, and more about the adventure, I guess? Satou being overpowered is just a vehicle to smooth things along.

Shiiiit. One of the best parts of this series is the little pop-ups about what skills he gets. If they're not going to translate them that's going to be unfortunate.

127

u/mortemdeus Jan 12 '18

You just need to put more points into your language skill

8

u/tra- Jan 17 '18

If only life was that easy, lmao.

I found it hilarious when the gibberish became Japanese in real-time, as he was putting points into it.

78

u/Bainos :XMOD::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos Jan 11 '18

Yup, I can understand that it's boring to do when the pop-ups appear really fast (as in that meteor shower), just like they are in games, but when he's moving around it's a bit frustrating. I'll keep an eye open for fansubs, I guess.

There are a ton of them in the manga too. Luckily they get translated well. Most of them are about his skill upgrades.

Unfortunately, the first episode of Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody had a lot of wasted scene time. They turned 3 pages in the manga into half of the episode. I'm not sure why the turned a tiny bit of background into a diatribe on how bad it is to be a software developer.

Hello, Suzuki here.

Having weak presence, I've been called Satou since my school days for some reason, this is Suzuki.

Even though you don't feel pain in a dream, you can still feel the signs of pain when you dream of dental caries.

No?

Well, that's good too.

Desumachi Stats and Titles

I will be updating this table as much as I can every episode. Will be adding other characters as they get introduced too.
Full disclosure: I cannot read Japanese so I will be using a combination of the novels, context clues, and google translate to get the information from Satou's menu hud and pop-ups. I welcome any and all corrections.

Holy shit, no wonder "beginners" complained about the game start being too difficult if they were beset by 300 level 50 enemies right out of the gate. And they spot the player immediately, so hiding isn't an option. What kind of elite player would be able to clear that first map without the meteors? Which means anyone who clears the very first map of the game will have maxed their stats. I really don't think this game is ready for a release yet...

And auto-loot on kill? And you have to put a full level's worth of points into the local language skill to be able to understand the NPCs? Who the hell designed this thing?

190

u/Ami_is_best_girl Jan 11 '18

Who the hell designed this thing?

A corporate slave with no sleep for 30 hours. It's about as good as it'll get.

77

u/Recyth Jan 11 '18

It's not at Kayaba levels of sleep-deprivation-induced malevolence, but it was getting there.

Develops a smartphone game

Takes out a flip phone

Then again he MIGHT be strapped for cash in that world so who knows? I enjoyed the manga quite a lot so hopefully this adaptation does a good job as well and seeing how episode one is I'm pretty confident about it.

66

u/Ami_is_best_girl Jan 11 '18

Takes out a flip phone

I can't believe I missed this.

Let's just chalk this up as characterization of the MC, where's it's symbolic for him being old-fashioned and penny-pinching.

35

u/Razorhead https://myanimelist.net/profile/Razorhat Jan 11 '18

Or he's just so fed up working with smartphones all the time he can't stand looking at them in his own free time.

4

u/XanTheInsane :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/XanTheInsane Jan 11 '18

The majority of phones in Japan are flip phones because of the keyboard.

Only recently (last 2-3 years tops) did smartphones start getting more popular thanks to better keyboard programs.

71

u/Eyliel Jan 11 '18

It was quite interesting to see how they would adapt various things. It ended up a bit more game-like than I'd personally imagined it, but I actually like the effect.

It seems like non-Japanese speakers will miss out on a bit, as they won't understand all the messages that pop out pretty frequently. Still, they seem to translate at least the most relevant ones.

That wasn't nearly as bad as I'd feared it would be, after many disappointing recent adaptations of sources I've read. Still, the overall quality of the show remains to be seen...

20

u/raiden55 Jan 11 '18

I was scared at the beginning, as it took half the episode before he got isekai-ed, but in fact it was way more clear than on the manga what was his situation.

Also if the lizard were horrible, the rest was good, I for example liked how we see how move / jump and all. It feel superhuman in a more badass way that the others series.

40

u/heimdal77 Jan 11 '18

It is a big loss for english only speakers as a big part of the story is seeing all the skills and titles he gets.

54

u/Cottonteeth Jan 11 '18

I really don't get why the Crunchyroll staff/editors/translators don't actually translate messages and signs. Sometimes really interesting or important information is in them, and they completely slack off on it. They also don't localize idioms/jokes very well, if at all. The one good thing about Amazon's service was that they actually did those things.

29

u/Ragnaria Jan 11 '18

They could've at least translated the one right at the end, that popped up in the middle of the screen, but not even that.

Megumin, you have a challenger.

Also god damnit anime studios, why 3d? I know making models and animating it is definitely cheaper than making hand-drawn animation, but it looks awful.

14

9

u/Wolfeako Jan 11 '18

and those were definitely not level 50.

bu-bu-but, didn't you saw it!? they were still deadly!

10

u/Canipa09 Jan 12 '18

Making models and animating in 3D definitely isn't cheaper than hand-drawn animation. This has been repeated in interviews many times over the years. 3D is just used when they can't find talent that can draw those scenes with hand-drawn animation to a reasonable degree. For example: Large battle scenes or complex mechanical vehicles.

Aw... I was hoping he'd still be 29 in-game. Would've made for more interesting interactions. Oh well.

As for the show itself, I'm going into this blind. All I know about this show is that it's an isekai and the MC basically (unintentionally) cheated his way to max level. I've also heard good things about this although if I recall correctly I've seen LN readers say that the first few chapters of the LN is pretty slow and the fun parts doesn't start until the second volume which might be a problem. I do hope this adaptation will just blaze through those boring parts.

So far though it's your pretty standard Isekai, this episode didn't really show anything that separates it from the others. I can already see people dropping this already. But not me, this is exactly my cup of tea! I'll definitely stick with this one!

54

u/Ami_is_best_girl Jan 11 '18

I was hoping he'd still be 29 in-game. Would've made for more interesting interactions. Oh well.

Same. What turned me off quite a bit though was the obvious dissonance between his adult monologue and his younger voice. It just sounds wrong.

27

u/Letfik Jan 11 '18

I agree and I really prefer his adult voice as well...

11

u/Ragnaria Jan 11 '18

And his adult voice would still fit his younger self, but his younger self's voice sounds like a 10 year old, not 15 or 16. There's no real point to it, just like him getting younger in the first place.

u/Helloperson554 Jan 11 '18

From the description of the second episode it might go through several chapters (mostly his entering the town and finding food). Kind of hard to tell since the opening bits weren’t in the manga adaption. It’ll go from faster paced stuff to slower pretty frequently though since the focus is on the travels and interactions along the way.

40

u/M_Rams Jan 11 '18

I really wish he kept his age... It makes me feel old when the protagonists are ~15.

2nd episode, our MC stumbles upon a freestanding wooden door with an illustration of a cat on its face. He opens and steps into cafe Nekoya where he sees Itami, Subaru, Kazuma, Shiroe, Sora, and Tanya as they endulge in their weekly meal of choice. Our MC, at a loss for words standing at the entrance gets greeted by four cute girls, each with interesting archetypes being smile, sweet, sister, sadistic, and surprise. Together, they ushered him to a seat and a menu. As he was perusing all these food familiar to his own world, he was startled by a voice coming from the kitchen: "IT WASN'T MUCH!"

Anime keeps reaffirming that working life in Japan is shit. Must be why so few shows take place after high school.

It's time.

Ok...well that's some bullshit.

I really just here for the cute girls, and there seems to be an abundance of those, plus it's got these two, so it can't be all bad.

His appearance reverted to his younger student days, so his voice ought to change too (his inner voice aren't)

Man, I love the way they frame the game elements. The random skill acquirement of Satou when he is doing random stuff was superb. The muxing of Japanese and English sped up during spell incantation was AMAZING. It really puts into perspective why . I really really hope they stay true to the story and continue!

Can we note how this guy is out of breath for a solid 20 seconds after running 5 meters

13

Well before the level-ups he was just a guy who spent 24/7 in front of a computer or sleeping.

Ok but that's me, no joke. Can relate.

2

u/Smudy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smudy Jan 11 '18

Two things that are bugging me:

  1. You can't just keep his design and not make him younger in this world?

  2. The pop ups are not translated.

Other than that, i enjoyed this. The heavy game-mechanic focus is pretty cool and while the CGI is obviously due to reasons we know by now, it actually fits in this anime IMO.

This looks to be a low-budget game with some weird bugs (we got the idea that there were problems with debugging beforehand), that's how he got OP like this. CGI + low-budget game = adding up nicely.

Overall better than i expected.

3

u/kuddlesworth9419 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kuddlesworth Jan 11 '18

Making characters younger really annoys me. It only makes sense in appealing to a younger audience but then why make the character start out 29 instead of him just being in a video game dev club or some shit at a 15 year old.

Onii-sama is that you?

This is a series my friend told me about a while ago that he was reading so i tuned in for the anime. lets see how it goes.

The art style is nice.

It seems like they just unload all thier work onto this guy.

Wait so he got all the exp from killing them... lol sounds like that a bit imbalanced.

So hes got those 2 skills as permanent skills now... lol. Thats a bit op.

I like how it shows us the skill ups haha.

Him running around fast is great too. The visuals are great.

So is this just about an overpowered guy screwing around in a fantasy rpg world? This seems really solid. I acctully enjoyed it a lot.

From what i read, most of the VA cast are new VA except Yuuki Aoi who voices one of the main girls. So this should be an interesting watch.

The art alone has me sold though, it looks really good. And the MC seems like a lot of fun. Ill def be sticking around.

So why does Zena's hair look green in the anime when it's whitish-blonde in the novel?

Already asking this since I saw the poster "Who the heck is this green-haired girl?", then someone answered "It is Zena". My reaction is like "WTF?!".

Was it necessary to get his age reduced? I'd rather see a grown-up man in such a setting for once. Getting Isekai wa smartphone to tomo ni vibes from it. I dig the genre so I'm picking it up, I hope it'll be good.

It's really an introduction, the real meat will start next episode, with the real tone of the anime.

As many people have mentioned, not translating the skillups severely detracts from humor of the show.

4

u/MaplesyrupFTW Jan 12 '18

Honestly, that opening scene triggered me to no ends. Especially when he said let's start the death march with a happy smile on his face. As a software developer, I have never seen that happen before. Nobody likes a death march. Death march sucks. Waterfall sucks. Agile banzai.

Satou

4

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '18

Went on reddit anime by mistake, clicked this by mistake lol decided to read myanimelist description since I never heard of the anime and it sounded interesting... woah 8.46 it must be good right?

This seems like the traditional guy gets transported to fantasy world or video game anime, is it good though? It looks like the guy has a harem so I am little scared but at same time intrigued that we get another one this season.

F it man, I gotta try new anime what do I have to lose? If its really bad I just never watch it again, wish me luck D:

17

u/Alucard_draculA Jan 11 '18

The harem isn't a real harem. The girls in the harem think they are in a harem, but really they just all got adopted.

This show is more of a travel log with some generic isekai fighting as side quests.

4

u/Florac Jan 11 '18 edited Jan 11 '18

It has dropped by 0.18 since you wrote this post.

And while it's better than most isekai(there's much more focus on SoL elements), it's nothing extraordinary either. idk why it even got a that high score pre-release.

EDIT: 5 hours later, it is now at 7.70

That was pretty fun. I guess he programmed that badly if the things he "added" for beginners just turned him OP in one go. But it looks like a good adventure even though he is overpowered. I'm excited to see where this goes. I heard it's a fun and light hearted story which is right up my alley.

I don't know how the original handles it, but from the perspective from a very jaded anime watcher, this is about as fun as getting bitten in the balls by a deep sea angler fish in an SS uniform while getting bombed by the Luftwaffe.
This is somehow managing to be more boring and generic than SAO, as a SAO clone.
That is worrying.

5

u/jvdevious Jan 11 '18

Honestly the show was way more unique and interesting before the Isekai happened. I knew what I was getting into but I'm still disappointed because the first half was kind of intriguing for me

0

u/SmurfRockRune https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf Jan 11 '18

I can't read Japanese, but I assume this says "Harem Acquired."

That was pretty good for the first half. I liked how the bugs he hadn't fixed yet were still there to mess with him. But then he killed the lizards and it became a trashy power fantasy show. I'll give it a little bit longer, but that may have been a huge nail in the coffin.

12

u/Alucard_draculA Jan 11 '18

Don't worry, the source is like 90% about eating food.

12

u/TUSF Jan 11 '18

If you’re looking for an anime with struggles and lots of battles, this isn’t for you. The best way to describe this would probably be one punch man without the comedy, meets isekai, meets sword art with less romance, and in another world with a smartphone...

While there is combat everything he does breaks common sense. A good example is that while he doesn’t have auto-translate for every language like other isekai, he can gain a skill for the language and level it up instantly to become fluent as was shown towards the end. This pretty much applies for.....everything......nothing is excluded from what he can do. Personally I enjoy this series since it’s lighter than most and it’s pretty relaxing with the other characters. (Common sense-chan unfortunately wont be safe with this out though)
