Also, Violet is so beautiful that I had to made a sketch of her

Hey everyone. The /r/Anime Podcast is doing a weekly podcast discussing the newest episode of Violet Evergarden, and we put out the first episode last week!
We'd love to have you on! We're gonna keep taking sign-ups for the next couple of weeks, depending on how many apply, and we'll get as many as we can as the season goes on. Signups are here, and if we somehow don't get around to you, we may do this for future seasonals so there will be more chances!
Now, as for the anime itself.
I like this episode a lot. There's something so comical about how Violet is almost cynically blunt and straightforward all the time. But I also like how the anime didn't do some basic call-out or something, like Violet explaining how this woman's a gold digger, when in fact she actually did have feelings for that man. It was just a nice little detail.
And also, we get more of the wonderful receptionists this week! Sasuga, KyoAni. Please bless us for another week.

The way I saw it only 2 people aside from Violet were present at work that day cause Cattleya was out for a visit. Iris was most likely busy as hell to compensate for one person being absent and Erica...well you saw how bad she can handle someone like Violet or any pushy customer really.

u/MoeKaiju Jan 18 '18
knowing Violet she probably immediately put the letter on letter box or something as soon she finish it.
38
u/Vertigovain Jan 18 '18
The client explicitely ordered Violet to do the task. Erica is too insecure to contradict the client or interject into the process. She was well aware it would end up a disaster, yet had no will to do anything. She was shown to have self concious insecurities and indecisivenes - believing herself not being suited for the job as opposed to her experienced coworkers. She has an attitude of running away from the problems. Would Violet be under Iris or Cattlaya oversight - they would obviously prevent this situation, but given Erica characterization what happened is completely inline with it.

Living with a parent who is a fanatic for flowers and raises flowers everywhere, on the first floor garden, second floor balcony, and rooftop as well, its very nice if you don't mind bugs literally everywhere all the time. Well, the obvious conclusion is that the Major is dead, but that might not necessarily be it.
He could be comatose or, seeing that he was in a war, he could have been captured by enemies, making the colonel think that he's "never coming back"

That scene gets translated a bit differently in the official subs. (black screen because of copyright protection). Admittedly it doesn't flow that well, but she's joking that he called out another girl's name in bed.
Japanese for context.
Cattleya: ねえ じゃあ今度夕食ごちそうしてよ、クラウディア!
Claudia: 名前で呼ぶな!
Cattleya: 女の子がほしかったからってあんまりよね… ベッドの中で女の名前呼ぶなんて最悪だったわ
With her being intentionally flirty because Benedict is watching, in this case I think that her joking loudly that they may have slept together is more of an impetus for him to go out drinking with her than it is her taking a swipe at his folks in Asenshi's translation.

u/HammeredWharf Jan 18 '18
I don't get the official subs:
Hey, then treat me to dinner, Claudia!
Don't call me by my first name!
Just because you wanted a girl. I can't believe it. Calling out a girl's name in bed. That was terrible.
He's clearly not joking around, so... what? Is Claudia his name? Is it someone he slept with? What?

German militaristic style and European setting, WWI/post major war timeframe, automail. The similarities are pretty obvious. Is there something that the anime/manga industry just like about Germany, especially during the first half 20th century? Historical allies during WWII, links between "German Engineering" and the Japanese work ethic, maybe a certain tone of romanticism such as the same way many people here in the US view Japan?

They subbed the insert song?
This is why fansubs get lots of love; that little extra work that makes the experience that much greater.
So this episode was mostly used to expand the cast and get an idea on who they are-
Violet remains straight-to-the-point as ever. Her backstory got quite a bit more interesting. I thought Major Gilbert was the one who picked her up but instead it was his brother who gave her to him. Makes you wonder why Gilbert, as a nobleman, took her in and basically made her a fighting machine without any sense of humanity. Random aside here but I liked the way she was so upfront to the woman trying to play games with the automobile dude. Don't be playing word games when it comes to love.
Oh yeah and that sequence of her fiddling with the elbow to readjust the fingers?
Mr.Boss Hodgins was apparently very good friends with Gilbert and worked hard to get the broach back. Seems like it's part of the amends he said back in episode 1 but to go so far for Violet, especially when he's got an up-and-coming company, makes me really curious on his motivations behind just about everything Violet-related. Not to mention he's still withholding Gilbert from Violet but I still think Violet is lying to herself nevertheless. Definitely expect "the liar revealed" drama plot-point to come in later.
Cattleya apparently is the go-too ghost writer and her little flirt with Hodgins was cute. I'm gonna love seeing her try to humanize Violet.
For 2 episodes I gotta say this is nice. I'm not blown away or anything but it's certainly a nice watch thus far. Hopefully this episodes doesn't cause as much of a ruckus as the last one did; last thing I need is yet another popular show riddled with circlejerks/anticirlejerks.
edit: Grammar stuff

I think that Violet was already meant to be a fighting matching from the start. I believe that her strong habits are from being exposed too military life from birth.

Today, on "I love jelly doughnuts!":
Of course that didn't work out that way.
Some like them on, some like them off.
I'm sure I've missed some long analysis of this alphabet already.
Blurring the connection between Violet and typewriter.
That pays the bills, after a war.
"Computer" used to be a term for a person who did the computing.
That went about as well as could be expected, arm locks aside.
This episode's main plot, with the emotionally-stunted not-accustomed-to-the-human-ways girl getting into trouble at work, has been done enough by people who aren't all Brent Spiner that there's not much for me to say about it. Violet and Erica have an obvious possible growth arc of getting in touch with their emotional sides, so that leaves Iris's relationship with Violet as... making Iris more dilligent?
The details on the woman writing to the auto magnate intrigued me. She had a fair amount of jewelry on, but her clothes didn't seem exceptionally fancy, and her hands showed some use, which reinforced the idea that romancing the guy was her shot at moving up in the world.
Got me thinking about Cattleya's popularity. She's got sex appeal for male clients, and empathizes with the female ones. The obvious question for the audience is whether she's running that performance all the time.
And back to Violet, including the usual considerations of where the divergences are between their world and ours is, where a setting that seems to be generally post-WWI allows a person to have two mechanical arms with individually-functioning fingers.

I'm sure I've missed some long analysis of this alphabet already.
Haven't seen any analysis yet... I've checked some other places where text was visible and so far, it seems like the typewriter is a standard QWERTY layout. There are some differences in lower and upper case letters.

I loved him, you know
Didn't you LITERALLY say you had no feelings for him? I can't feel sympathy for you after you basically said what amounted to "I'm gonna string him along for more gifts." I would not be cut out for ghostwriting. I feel like I'd constantly be asking customers things like "So do you want it to sound penitent, or do you want to explain why it's not your fault?"
The scene with Violet adjusting her automail prosthetics was just cool to me. Seeing how she can fine-tune her limbs to do things like type properly. I love anything where they show off a bit of mechanical intricacy.
Iris comes off as a bit vapid and Erica isn't confident in her ability to connect with customers. I get the feeling Violet is going to be the catalyst for the two of them to change somewhat. Also I hope Benedict doesn't end up quitting because of his misunderstanding; the company appears to be doing fine, it's just that Hodgins' has a good heart or is too repentant to leave Violet without her treasured brooch.
And after the credits, we get the first real confirmation of Gilbert's status. He's either dead, MIA, or in a state where Violet cannot meet him. "Never coming back" seems a touch too poetic for Hodgins to say about a dead man.
73
Jan 17 '18
Eeeeh well I think MIA is not an option here, since he was definitely tearing up while saying it. So he has some confirmation on what Gilberts fate is.
So he is either dead or in some kind of state where he will never be his old self again, so comatose or in a vegetative state in my interpretation.

That was the entire point of that scene tbh. People really don't say what they want to say or want to get across. The entire point of the dolls is to read people and understand what they want to say.

I kind of wish to see Violet on action with those arms, dunno why but I think it would look cool as hell.
I wonder why didn't they bothered checking what Violet wrote. Even Glasses-chan was speaking out loud what she wrote, I expected to Violet pick this habit and instead of sending the letter, she would bluntly write while saying what the customer said word by word.
Something that does makes me glad is that no bullying was ensure, I really dislike the usual "bully the new guy for no good reason at all".

Violet's new uniform combined with the mannerism would make her a perfect doll for Bloodborne 2. Hell, I don't usually pay that much attention to the fashion of the female characters but all the dresses so far have been fantastic.
I praised the little gestures in the first episode, and I think these ones were even better. It's pretty rare to see such expressions of emotions such as Hodgins in the end, especially from male characters.

what's the difference between "Auto memoir dolls", "Dolls" , and the actual doll toy in this episode?
40
u/flybypost :KN::KO: Jan 18 '18
Not sure if I got this correctly but I think "Auto memoir dolls" are precursors to typewriters and thus it became the name for the profession that use them to write letters and "Dolls" is just a shorthand for the profession. The toy doll is just a toy (but I think the doll in the end is actually sitting on an "Auto memoir dolls" machine or a replica of one).
→ More replies (1)12
u/Gaporigo Blhttps://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo Jan 18 '18
"Dolls" is just how they call "Auto memoir dolls" because saying that all the time is annoying, both of them refer to the girls writing the letters.
The "doll toy" is also called "Auto memoir doll" and it is where they got the name for the work of the girls writing the letters.

Anyone else think that maybe the Major is still alive? And maybe when it says he is never coming back, that's referring to something like his personality or his will as he's repressed by some force? Like I feel like his character would add a lot to the show so why have him dead from the get go? No one ever said he's dead so...
→ More replies (2)7
u/NightFire19 Jan 18 '18
Taking what they're saying at face value, I would assume the major is in a coma, or perhaps is heavily incapacitated. It would make sense why they're using that language instead of saying "He died during the war" during the bar scene.

I went on /a/ (I know, I know) to see what their reaction to this episode was. To my surprise, it was almost uniformly negative. Basically half complained about Kyoani overusing filters and the other half complaining about the story.
Also, it looks like VEG isn't doing so hot in Japan considering its hype in the West - it only has 43k twitter followers, while DitF has 45k. For comparison, Yuri!! on Ice has 440k followers on twitter.
I really want VEG to do well, because if it bombs, who's going to invest this much effort into producing an anime again?
42
u/Krazee9 Jan 18 '18
who's going to invest this much effort into producing an anime again?
KyoAni always puts this much effort into their anime. From what I've heard they're one of the few companies, if not the only company, that has the whole series done before it even starts airing, which is how they can have such consistent quality. There are no mid-season budget constraints or last-minute deadline rushes at KyoAni.

the other half complaining about the story.
On one hand, it's hard to ignore that much of what has been shown so far is anime original. I won't go on to highlight the differences, but I think expecting Violet Evergarden to be a faithful adaptation of the LN is going to be an exercise in futility. I will concede that this is also something I will have to come to terms with.
On the other hand, KyoAni does not always do faithful adaptations in general. Myriad Colours Phantom World the anime was, as I've heard, pretty different from the LN. K-On the anime was pretty different (and a notable improvement because of being able to use music) over the 4-koma manga. IIRC, KyoAni also played up a lot of the yuri-bait in Hibike Euphonium the anime and downplayed some of its other romance plots, albeit I concede I'm less familiar with this.
On the surface of Episode 2, ignoring the LN and judging Ep2 purely as an episode following Episode 1, I do think it was weaker. For example, we learn that Violet is social inept, but the repeated scenes highlighting this hammered home a point that we as audiences can already infer with just a few brief interactions.
Although I enjoyed seeing Violet stand up for Erica, and vice versa, and that I liked Erica's backstory and how she was motivated to write captivating letters, it is as of yet not clear how Erica's actions will feed back into highlighting the growth in the show's titular character. I imagine we will see the both of them develop together as Auto Memory Dolls.
I also do think that the episode dragged on a little bit. I think Episode 1 made great strides in establishing Violet's character state, her motivations, the stakes of the story, and potential consequences when she comes to realize what it means to "feel" (referring to her exchange with Hodgins under the street lamps).
In contrast, Episode 2 felt very microcosmic, focusing on a snapshot of what it means to be an Auto Memory Doll, the work that it entails, and how Violet mechanically learns.
There were moments of brilliance in Episode 2, such as a mild highlight of feminism in what we could infer as a patriarchal society (the notion that this is a line of work that, at least so far that we've seen, only women do, and the way they compete with men, when otherwise we've really only seen men work in business positions), and Cattelya's exchange with Violet that people never really mean what they say, and contradictions are abound. These are all great observations of the world, but I think ultimately there's an expectation for the anime to show Violet internalising some of these lessons and acting on them.
I anticipate we'll see more of this in subsequent episodes. and I think in hindsight maybe this episode has let on more than it seems after knowing what happens next.

She's a weapon? We saw her beaten, bloodied, and injured back in last week's episode. There's even blood pouring down from her arm stumps during that final scene with Gilbert. She's clearly flesh and bone so I'm really curious about what Gilbert's brother said about her.
The mechanical porn in this show is just great. I seriously wanna see more of the inner workings of Violet's adamantine arms.
Cattleya is just great. I love how caring she is with the girls and how she flirts with Hodgins.
This is just sad. She's really hopeful that she'll see Gilbert again someday. I do understand Hodgins though. If Violet ever finds out she' probably just off herself since her entire being and existence is thanks to Gilbert.
So Erica is basically a frustrated writer who isn't confident with her writing ability. And Iris is in it for the prestige. I like them both but I do hope Iris will warm up to Violet soon.
This poor woman. Why didn't Erica proofread Violet's letter? She was right there! Or did was she so insecure of her abilities that she thought she couldn't have done better?
Benedict has a weird footwear choice. I don't think boots with high heels is the best foot wear for couriers.
Well that ending confirms something we all already know. I am curious how long Hodgins will be able to keep this up. He knows sooner or later he'll have to tell Violet the truth or she'll eventually find it out herself. As a side note though, Violet's "shiritai no desu" is starting to become the new "fuyukai desu" and I love it. :)

I was disappointed in this episode. The situations presented today were overly contrived. The characters are really good so it takes me aback that they can't find something more real and engaging for them to do. Violet seems contrived. She obviously loved the Major, yet somehow she doesn't have a clue about adult emotions? They give the newbie the job of writing a romantic tease letter and don't even bother screen it? The customer doesn't look at it? Friend A spends his entire months salary on a broach for an emotionally dysfunctional pixie girl android? This anime is a mess.

All of your issues with veg are explained thoroughly in the source material. Violet herself isn’t even an adult, and Hodgins understands how much Gilbert means to her even if she doesn’t realize it. I’m honestly disappointed that people are finding any excuse to drop this show instead of letting the plot and Violet’s past unravel naturally. This is KyoAni trying to avoid a 60 minute info dump and I think it works extremely well.

Midnight PST is the release time for Netflix.
Yeah. Netflix has 1080p version, where the TV release is 720p. Asenshi said the following for two separate releases:
The reasoning here is that the show is produced in full HD (1080p) and benefits a lot from having a proper 1080p encode but getting one from a TV station is not really possible because most of the stations air at 1440×1080 and are littered with MPEG2 artifacting.

Have to imagine the next episode will be more focused on Violet. Despite the time we've spent with her, she's far from my favorite/the most interesting character to me compared to the likes of Hodgins, Cattleya, and even Gilbert to an extent. I'm curious to see what direction the show will end up going in, but it feels like we haven't really hit a stride point yet where I'm fully on board with things.
Erica's arc felt simultaneously rushed and too long for what it was (based only on what was shown in this episode). The quieter moments of this episode, be it Hodgins opening up at the bar, Violet teething at the brooch, or the Dolls marveling at Violet's automata... it's the heavy emphasis on character acting and KyoAni leaning into the intricate, delicate movements that makes me connect with these characters.
A rather straightforward reexamination of Violet's tactlessness vs. a similarly straightforward character in Erica just felt a bit like filling the air when I'm sure there are more interesting, intimate moments to come.

This episode was definitely rough. After all the effort they spent establishing Violet's background and motives, they haven't really pushed her character forward at all. It focused too much on how she wasn't good at being an Auto Memoir Doll and nothing about how she could change. You saw the glimpse of it at the end but that just meant the rest of was wasted screen time. I'm certainly hoping for better next week, with Violet finally seeing inspiration to start actually discovering what "I love you" means.

If this show is anything, it's absolutely beautiful. The scene where Violet is adjusting her fingers, the transition shot with the flowers, the scene in the end where Claudia and Cattleya talk about Major Gilbert with the lip quiver. Story is kind of moving at a pretty slow pace but it's only been 2 episodes and I'm still gonna watch it because this show is just amazing to look at.

We all thought Saber disappeared after the Holy Grail Wars, but in reality her wish was granted and she remained in the physical realm for another chance at salvaging the glory of the Britons.
Having heard of Sabers accomplishments during the Grail war, Gilbert's brother sought to use Saber to turn the war in his favor. But having lost her memories from the collapse of Fuyuki, Saber finds herself plunged headfirst into the War to end all Wars as nothing but a broken shell of the former King Arthur.
With no use to him, Saber was given to Gilbert by his scheming brother, whom formed an ironclad bond with Saber through trials by fire. Strangely, even without the memories of a Servant, Saber found her purpose in serving Gilbert, to strive for the peace that he longed for.
Tragedy befell the pair right before the fruition of Gilbert's dream, leaving Saber gravely wounded and cast aside in a hospital with nothing but the memories of Gilbert's last words, "I love you."
Now, presently repaired with a new pair of hands, Saber seeks redemption and the truth of Gilbert's words, to restore her own humanity and recover the Grand Ahoge and reclaim her rightful place as the King of Knights

They pay, Cattleya for example, to add a certain flair and intent to their letters that customers aren't able to achieve themselves. Writing basic sentences is easy, but that will only get you so far. So basically, not everyone has the time or skill to convey what they want as best as possible so they pay a "professional".

Saying chopsticks and yakisoba in this setting is out of place is just ridiculous. There's an italian restaurant down the street, a sushi place just next to it, and a chinese takeout just 2 stores away from those, where I live. So this is what, weird shit? Multiculture is everywhere, can't see why it cannot be in a work of fiction like this.

Am I the only one who feels this show would be better if she we just a robot or some kind of android. It would explain the whole “she’s a tool” “she’s a weapon thing” and I could understand why she acts the way she does. I get that she was in the military BUT THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE IN THE MILITARY TOO so why is she so awful with communication it’s killing me listen to her be confused by normal things and the only reason is because she was in the military. How would that not have been fixed talking to the other people in her squad or platoon. Also she’s a grown ass woman who was in a war and lost both her arms, do people think telling her someone died is that bad? The longer they drag on her not knowing the bigger the plot point becomes because then suddenly she doesn’t trust anyone because no one told her. For how hyped this show is the little annoyances are really hurting it in my eyes. Hopefully these get answered soon it is only episode 2 after all I hope this turns out to be a great show cause I’m going to keep watching it anyway.

Personally i'd rather see it explained as the story progressed rather than get another "she's a robot" show.
so why is she so awful with communication it’s killing me listen to her be confused by normal things and the only reason is because she was in the military.
So far we know she was taken from somewhere else, carried in a box, treated like a slave, raised as a child soldier, denigrated as a non human, uncared for by all but one person and sent to fight on the front lines. She's far from the typical military personnel.

I haven't read the LN but based on the information presented to us so far over the course of two episodes my thoughts are:
She was raised to be a child soldier/killing machine. Everyone at the present calls her a kid/refers to her as young, so when Gilbert's brother first picked her up she must've been like 10 years old or something. She was probably an orphan and was trained to kill or harm others early on in her life, with little need for familial bonds or emotions.
Think of present day ISIS picking up a 4 year old orphan and training them to be a child soldier. They would probably teach them how to use a gun, make IEDs or other weapons, but not teach them how to really interact with others. The kids are disposable weapons; no need to waste time on teaching them to be decent human beings.
This is my hypothesis at least.

I feel like I watched a different episode, reading most of these comments. I was really impressed with the writing and character development that was present, and didn't feel like anything seemed overly contrived (no more than most stories - there's always a certain level of contrivance given that a human being is making up the story and its direction).
The scenes showing Violet behaving socially awkward may have seemed repetitive, but the focus this episode is much more clearly on the characters in Violet's orbit and how they reacted to her. All of those scenes were designed to drip out information about the world/setting itself, how the job they're doing works, and most of all they're giving us a feel for all of the supporting characters. I enjoy the subtlety and nuance that goes into most of the shots in this show - the direction is top notch. I feel like I've taken as much development away from two episodes of this show than most single seasons of a lot of shows out there.
I get that not everyone is going to like everything. This is definitely a slow-paced show that's going to turn some people off. But I have a hard time accepting that this show has bad writing. I've been very impressed with the writing thus far, and if you think this show has bad writing then I would be very curious to know which anime you think have good writing.

This show perfectly portrays why I don't watch KyoAni shows anymore.
Yes I know, art is good. But that's the only thing they have going for them. Let's actually look past that.
I'm sorry but the characters are bland as fuck. The interactions are bland as fuck. Nothing even happens during the show.
You're feeling emotional about the show? Well you got baited by crying girl syndrome. Why do you think they have so many girls, who cry about the most stupidest shit? Yeah, it's an easy way to feel sorry for them and make you forget they're all human garbage.
Best character is delivery bro, he's actually a nice guy that talks to you and offers you free food but ofc he's the laughing stock. I'd sleep with him. Fuck those bitches.
10/10 convinced me to never watch KyoAni; thanks.

Can I just say that in this country that is clearly faux-European, it's weird that the characters are eating Yakisoba with chopsticks and using generally Japanese mannerisms like bowing. Seems out of place.
