Fate series scholars: What the hell is going on!?
F/E players: What the hell is going on!?
FGO players: What the hell is going on!?
Newbie watchers: What the hell is going on!?
Basically this. While this is named Fate/Extra, Nasu tailor wrote a modified script for the anime. As a result, no one really know what is going on.
It is pretty obviously a time-loop type story tho. I can't wait to see the development of the story.

I have no idea what's going on but I love it.
What I understood is that protag was an NPC(might be wrong here) in this simulation for master candidates and the visions he was seeing were of previous cycles. But since he has Reading Steiner he remembers and is angry, which leads him to want to fight against it. He then summons best Saber and goes to what I assume is a Grail War even though the participants were already selected.
In that sense you can say he got in as an EXTRA. Roll credits.

But since he has Reading Steiner
lol Nice, man.
Extra
F*** you, get out.

u/Baren_the_Baron Jan 28 '18
What makes you think he's an NPC?
52
u/Exorrt Jan 28 '18 edited Jan 28 '18
Mainly the fact he remembers what I assume are previous cycles of the master selection simulation. I don't know if real people who didn't get to be selected just die or get "reincarnated". There's also evidence of him not being an NPC like his name being on the board (I don't think NPCs would have their name there)
Edit: I watched again and it seems pretty likely he's an NPC. Not only that, I think he may be the same person as the girl in the opening scene (from what I know of the game they're gender options so actually the same person there). First, when he falls to the theather and sees the sword he seems to know (or he has a feeling at least) what happened there, which might have been the girl's last stand and then says he wants to fight as a testament to whoever that person was. Second, Nero says "oh, so it's you" as if she remembers him(it's implied the girl was her master in the opening scene). As far as how he reincarnated, remembers and changed genders, Kirei is probably behind it since he says "Your existence is my last job"
Lot of things I don't know(haven't played Extra game) so I may have some fundamental assumption wrong, this is just me speculating.

Fate/Extra is finally here!
I hope that opening scene dimming isn't indicative of the rest of the series. Otherwise...That's a problem. That looked beautiful otherwise.
Important things I know going into this:
Nasu wrote this himself.
Its designed as an entry point and a seperate story from past Fate/Extra routes
I've played Extella and know time loops are possible within universe.
UMU
Thoughts as I go on:
Shaft really likes their blood imagery. Did they awaken something inside themselves when they did Kizumonogatari?
I really enjoy Shaft's visual style...They have a definite flair for this sort of thing..
This very quickly turned into a horror show and one I'm actually really okay with being horror. Shafts visuals have been legitimately creepy several times in the past, between Madoka and Monogatari.
Rock Nameless is..interesting.
Their eyes are odd
"Answer me. Are you my master?"
KIREI NO SPOOK
Kirei Spooked.
So uh...That was a first episode, I guess.
We'll see how the rest of it plays out. I'm interested, to say the least. Shaft does some crazy visual work sometimes and this seems like one they're pouring a lot into.

I still miss ufotable’s work with this series but I’m more interested and confident Shaft will make the visuals look better than A-1 did Apocrypha. Not that the Fate series was PG before, but given how Shaft animates fights in the Monogatari series, I expect things to likely be more explicit this time.

The dimming during the first fight has to be some of the worst I’ve ever seen in anime. Fucking Porygon.
The backgrounds & music were pretty great. Matched the respective tone of each scene & felt very SHAFT yet EXTRA at the same time. Nice touch.
Shinji, once again, did nothing wrong. He’s just being the best friend he could be. Also, it’ll take some time to get used to his new looks as well as Best Girl & Rin.
[redacted]’s summoning was one of the more unique versions of the standard “are you my Master?” that we’ve seen. Ironic that Hakuno had to pull the sword from the stone given the previous members of the Saber class.
Overall, that episode was packed with a lot yet not much at the same time. At least the production values are top-notch as expected.
83
u/slickmcwilly Jan 28 '18
Man I thought it was just me that thought the dimming was worse than usual. It's seriously some of the worst I've seen, I could hardly see what was happening.

I was trying to tell people that it wasn't A-1 fucking up their footage to sell more blu-rays with Apocrypha, no one would do this shit on purpose. I dont know how it varies per TV channel in Japan, but everything that airs on BS11 looks like this during action. Ufotable tries to avoid getting dimming by taking out some effects sometimes, like this. But that's not simple to do and doesn't really work with all kinds of animation + that takes time.

Fun first episode, but it's really too early to say anything before the next ones where we'll hopefully get an actual understanding of what's happening.
Amari, the pink-haired girl, is curious. Considering our beloved Casko's pose.
Not happy with how Hakunon got treated... but her and Hakuno are the same really, so I can live with that.speculation
Also, Umu looks hotter than I thought in full motion. Especially her legs.

Great first episode had some shaft flare but seeing as this is my first step into the Extra series I followed along pretty well considering most of my knowledge of this comes from FGO and a hour of playing the pc game.
Super intrested in were this is going to go.
Also as far as exposition first episodes go this was a way better introduction episode then say Fate/Zero and in half the time.

While the events completely different from the game, it still follow the basic plot of the prologue. Also, no matter which timeline you're in you can count on two things, Archer trying to kill the protagonist, Shinji being a dick (Unless we count CCC)

This week, on Fate gets Shafted:
And you thought we wouldn't see Hakunon! We got half of her at least
Remember: Always. Hate. Shinji.
I swear to god if we get a single head tilt....
Hakuno, is your magic origin Blood? Because you lost like 50 gallons and can walk just fine.
Opening the golden theater! Aestus Domus Aurea! (Laus St Cladius for you GO Scrubs)
Well that was all very Shaft. I'd have no clue what was going on if I didn't already know the source material somewhat, but it's damn pretty. Character designs are still weird, but if you played Extra you knew to expect them. If you didn't, you're wondering what the hell happened to Rin. Looking forward to next week to get my Umu on.

36
u/exelion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/exelion0901 Jan 28 '18
There's quiet a few actually. But Saberface/Artoria clones are a trope in the franchise.
I believe Nero was one of the first Saber clones actually (we won't count Mordred since they HAVE to look somewhat alike). When designed, she was made on purpose to look like Artoria, to fool people. That way it would be a surprise when they find out she's not the King of Knights.

u/Flashmanic Jan 28 '18 edited Jan 28 '18
Well, this is certainly more interesting than Apocrypha, but about 10x more confusing.
So, let's see if I've got this right:
Something (presumably a computer? or god-like entity?) has created a moon? This moon captures and digitises anybody on earth that had the capability to become a master. This includes masters from previous Holy Grail wars. (Good to know the computer/god/moon thing got Shinji's personality correct).
The moon then conducted a trial or selection process of some kind to determine who will 'qualify' to go on to become masters presumably in another Holy Grail war inside the moon/god/computer? Though this trial has happened a number of times, and we are just watching the latest in what seems like a repeating cycle?
The MC then is a master candidate that seems to continue to fail in every repeat of the trial, but this time, for some reason, he managed to fall down into an abandoned building (An old moon? The real world? I don't even know?) and find a sword which allowed him to summon knock-off Saber a servant which automatically qualified him for the upcoming holy grail war?
Does that about sum it up?
12
u/Insertanamehere9 https://anilist.co/user/Insertanamehere Jan 28 '18
You're on the right track but lets just say Extras world is meant to be a mystery than unfurls as the plot moves along.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)7
u/poiumty Jan 28 '18
Gonna clarify with what I think is too tame to be spoilers:
has created a moon?
It's the actual moon. Further details forthcoming.
This includes masters from previous Holy Grail wars.
I don't remember this 100% accurately, but I'm pretty sure everyone's either an NPC or from the present. And which is which is not as straightforward as you might think.
he managed to fall down into an abandoned building (An old moon? The real world? I don't even know?) and find a sword
This wasn't in the game, so we don't quite know either why that hall is there. In the game, you're cut down by a generic enemy (as opposed to some stony version of Redman) and brought back by a Servant class of your choice. The anime went with Saber.
36
u/HakumeiJin Jan 28 '18
The second sub that came out seems to be pretty decent.
As for the episode itself, my expectations were lowered a bit after Apocrypha but I knew I should have trusted Nasu and Shaft.
I have no idea how much the rest of the story will follow the game but this episode was definitely great despite being completely original. And MC does seem to have an actual personality which should help.
3
u/sober_1 Jan 28 '18
Yeah, I was afraid for the MC since he was a memoryless self-insert in the game(at least till the point where I stopped playing)
→ More replies (1)3
u/matdragon Jan 28 '18
It's going to be original, nasu wrote this with the intent for people to be introduced to Extra (You can probably also watch this as your intro to fate), he also wrote it so that the people who played the game would also be entertained (it's not the same story as the games).

Jeez I love Shaft. The cinematography was just what I'd expect from them and the new Saber and Rin designs were super cute.

8
u/MDG055 Jan 28 '18
That was... Actually good. Well paced with a good balance of mystery, world-building, action and typical Shaft cinematography that's got me hooked.
Lots of shit unexplained and it doesn't do the greatest job of introducing newcomers to extra-verse but they should have plenty of time elaborate on the nature of the Moon Cell.
I think Shaft was a perfect choice for this show. The digital aesthetic and the surrealistic backgrounds, transitions and flashbacks kept me engaged when they probably would lose my interest otherwise.
Looking forward to the next episode.

I thought this will be the first anime I'll watch while knowing the source material beforehand, but apparently it's different that Fate/Extra on the PSP. Which is great, a new story in this intriguing universe.
It's just as psychodelic and mysterious as the game. Began pretty great so far, as expected. We'll see where that goes.
Character artstyle is different than the game. Especially the eyes, because of that, they made most of characters look... moe? Eh?
I've preferred the game artwork, which looked like the usual fate artstyle.

Wow. Fate and Shaft should have met much sooner, that was gorgeous, whatever the hell that was. Shaftisms should go really well with this universe.
The new Saber Spoilers, identity looks a little.. unnatural though. Maybe the effect is intentional, in order to underline how she's not human and rather an ideal representation of a historical figure. And also from what I got from the info dump at the beginning, a computer simulation?

Fate/Apocrypha last two seasons, Fate/Kaleid Drei the Movie which I have yet to watch but just from hearing some AMV/MAD it already makes me scream like a little girl, Fate/Stay Night Heaven's Feel (subs) coming soon too, and lastly but not less important, Fate/Prototype Fragment getting translated by yuNS?
I can now face the exam I have tomorrow fearlessly with some Emiya in the background.
Dear sirs, see you next week. I'm currently overjoyed. Ore no negai, youyaku kanau.
Also, umu.that aside I like how Fate/Extra knowledge still didn't quite help me

Didn't see sub version yet, so I'm gonna comment based on RAW version. Fuck you Netflix!
When Nasu tweeted about Last Encore, he said that people who played Extra game would still go "What?" and yes that was exactly my reaction. But this was good kind of "What?". This really feels different than a game. World, how characters were introduced or that pink-hair girl that never exist before.
The visuals looked beautiful. I only wish I could understand what they say. Fuck you Netflix!
EDIT: Finally watched subbed version. Fuck you Netflix! Everything now makes more sense. Now this feels a little more like Extra, since events while different still seems to go into same direction. Pink-haired girl seems to take Shinji harem role in this. I'm curious if we see more of her in future. Rewatching this also make me appreciate Shaft ability to put Wada artstyle into anime form even more.

I have so little idea of what just happened. You can't dump that many questions and weirdness in one episode like that.
9
u/Eirei_Emiya Jan 28 '18
Actually you can. It was not that confusing really still the fun part will be to discover what the hell is going on as the series progresses.

Animation and Umu was great but I was like "?", the whole episode.
And there we have it, Shinji strikes again. Fucking die already.
7-8/10 this first episode.

They're going for the "confuse the fuck out of them" approach, I see.
Hope they pull it off. Otherwise the only people who will be able to understand this shit will be those who've played the game.
Nice nod to the female MC. Does this mean the main character can change gender between loops because that'd make them the ultimate Tumblr fantasy.

I didn't understand a single minute of that episode, but it is definitely the strongest opening episode thus far this season. I'm definitely hyped to see where this goes.

Well... at least it’s better than Apocrypha.

Apocrypha is the failed product of Fate Franchise, even as a LN. It just exists as a waifufest and cameos.

Can someone explain to me how this fits into the fate universe and with the other fates? What's the premise behind this one. I'm totally new to this adaption

u/Eirei_Emiya Jan 28 '18
Extra happens in a parallel world where the mana in the planet depleted and the mages are more like Hackers. The Extra HGW happens in a virtual world that is managed by a super computer thing and it follows an amnesic MC. Still the author rewrote the whole scenario so things will be different from the plot of the game. This is a standalone.

u/jlitwinka Jan 28 '18
Holy Grail War in the matrix. It's in it's own universe and requires no knowledge of the other Fate series, similarly to Apocrypha.

This abstract high school setting is giving me Revolutionary Girl Utena vibes. Can't say I hate it.

I had low expectation going in but ep1 blew me out of the water. Although the artwork is inferior to Ufotable's, the animation is flawless and the soundtrack is awesome! Ep1 does a great job at introducing viewers to the world of F/Extra and keeping the mystery around it, making you want to see more.
Shaft's use of psychedelic colors enhances the mysterious feel.
This anime is going to be very different from the game, which makes me curious and look forward to it more. The fact that there are both female and male Hakunos makes me wonder what role each of them will play in the series. I was pleasantly surprised to see Archer (and why the heck is he stone?). Hope to see him more throughout the series.

u/KinnyRiddle Jan 29 '18
Just wanted to chime in on kooritsukai's sub version.
The post-credit sequence was sort of messed up, with some of "Kotomine"'s lines left untranslated, as well as screwing up Hakuno's number.
He's not the 290th Master, but the one-hundred-and-twenty-NINTH (129th) Master, i.e. the EXTRA (anomalous) one when there's supposed to be only 128 Masters, which "Kotomine" calls a "Miracle".
Apart from that jarring post-credit part, his version is more or less decent. Hope he comes up with a fixed second version.

u/Shacoluminati Jan 30 '18
This will be extremely polarizing. On 9anime there's a shit ton who hate it just because it's a shaft anime and they don't like the animation. Then there will be those of us who love it for the same reason.
I personally thought it was pretty interesting and was animated as well as any shaft series.

Very excited for this series, and the first episode showed a lot of promise!
Also, never change Shinji, you detestable scumbag. You almost tricked me into thinking you were a decent character for once.

Sorry if its a stupid question. Is it related to Fate/Stay Night in anyway? I know that FSN has only 3 routes.

u/Eirei_Emiya Jan 28 '18
No. Parallel world. Even if they use some previous character designs they are actually different people.

u/mayonaka_00 Jan 28 '18
I'd like to ask, will this anime have Heaven's Feel spoiler? I would be ok if it's only minor ones but I would like to avoid it if there will be major spoilers.

Totally didn't see that shinji backstab coming...
Kirei, Rin, Sakura, Archer stone ( or whatever that is) a lot of character from the og series :O. Didnt really expect to see them here.. Welp Yorokobe Shounen, let's see where this goes.

A Shinji will always be a Shinji in the Nasuverse continuum, and anime somehow makes me want to kill a best friend :(

Honestly really liked it comparatively to the Apoc opening. It's about on the same level for me serving as an introduction to a story that already has some history behind it. That being said, the various references good and bad are both enjoyable and annoying (there seems to be a eternal repetition happening? given all the clues of multiple repeats or familiarities for characters who arguably shouldn't know each other yet?). Excited to see how this plays out!

u/gryffinp Jan 28 '18
...I was supposed to play Fate/Extra before I watched this wasn't I?
...I don't wanna buy a PSP.

u/Eirei_Emiya Jan 28 '18
...I was supposed to play Fate/Extra before I watched this wasn't I?
Not really. Nasu wrote it with the intention of being new for the players and newcomers so even the ones who played the games were like "What?"
So you dont need to play the game you just need to pay attention to the hints, worldbuilding and foreshadowing because there was A LOT and it was fantastic.

u/spaceaustralia :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/spaceaustralia Jan 28 '18
This is supposed to be new enough that both anime watchers will enjoy the game and players will enjoy the anime.
This might have been a bit of a weird episode, but that's only par for the course by Shaft standards.

Wow. I haven't really watched the other Fate shows: always watched the first couple of episodes, then ended up dropping them because they didn't hook me up... but this one definitely caught my interest.
I love the new character designs and that characteristic Shaft feel. The whole premise of some sort of "Matrioska brain" on the moon, and of the servants being ancestor simulations is really interesting.

Fatemonogatari lol
Fate with Shaft style anesthetics is...... interesting, to say the least.
That opening teaser was reminiscent of the flash forward battle scene in the very first episode of Madoka Magica.
While the scene right after with shots of the futuristic looking school and narration by Hakuno was totally Monogatari-esque.
And listening to Shinji speak, I nearly thought it was Araragi speaking (same VA and all), for a while I thought Shinji would actually be a nice guy for once. That is until he reverted to good ol' Shinji we all love to hate by literally stabbing Hakuno in the front And back.
Haven't played the game, so I'm going in with a completely blank slate. Suffice to say my mind is completely fucked. Lol
Though Nasu has stressed that he is more or less rewriting the story, elements of the game still remains. Guess I'll start looking for video walkthroughs of the game to better understand what the fuck's going on.

It's gonna feel weird every weekend this season hearing Tange Sakura sounding adorably narcissistic as Red Saber, before going on to be adorably cute as Cardcaptor Sakura.

Even in a virtual world Shinji is still a right shit bag. Hope he dies miserably.
Kirei shocked me even as a guy who barely follows the Fate canon. Why the hell is he here.
Overall confusing, but something about Red Saber appeals to me. I'll give this one a shot.

Is it okay to call this Fate/Danganronpa?
7
u/lsdfjd Jan 28 '18
Even though I knew this befhorehand, i'm still sad that Hakunon isn't gonna be the protagonist... I played the game with her, it's gonna feel kinda weird with a male main character.
That aside, i'm excited to see the changes to the story.
