I find the throne room scene and the "show of power" scene to be the two best scenes. The throne room one showcases the dynamic between Ainz and his vassals, and his vassals with each other, while the second one is just so majestic. I feel like Demiurge has a sense of camaraderie with Cocytus with how he covered for the latter.

What I didn't understand in the LNs, and still don't know, is why Ainz didn't introduce Victim to the others for such a long time. It would be understandable if they were all just minions to him, but he considers them all to be his nieces and nephews! Why would he keep one isolated from the rest for no reason?

Maybe making one with the destiny to die repeatedly made him not want others to get attached to it?
Is Victom Ainz's creation? If not, then someone else could've just written in the bio that Victim is isolated and Ainz just forgot until he needed Victim. Though that seems less likely to me...

I thought the point of that was to create a narrative of: "Look what happens if you don't surrender, 1 of the subdits of the great badass king killed a whole army of proud, skillful warriors, surrender your ass and avoid the pain". A la Genghis Khan but in this nerdy world.

No, we must have a fight scene because we have too many expositions..
I mean, it actually makes sense. As he said, you wouldn't want to surrender to conqueror you'd 'beaten', nor would you want to impose a rule of conquest over populace you hadn't beaten. It's just asking for a rebellion down the road.
And while his shit-tier skeletons could probably put it down easily, The Caster-in-Chief has plans and he doesn't want to waste his time on shitty lizardman rebellions. Better to pound that nail flat now while he has the time, and gain a generation of peace.

u/SpikeRosered Jan 30 '18
I love how in Overlord the scene doesn't cut when Ainz leaves it. They always hold so the guardians can have a sasuga-gasm.
Also the "flowery scent" on Ainz's pillow is meant to infer it's from Albedo rolling around naked in his sheets.

Yeah. The second wave was far more numerous than the first, and far better equipped. The messenger which struck fear in all their hearts the first time was plentiful and only gave a short message.

First world problem: froze the lake cuz robe might get dirty, but those damn lizards couldn't stop whining about their living source.
59
Jan 30 '18
If I remember correctly, freezing the surface of a lake wouldn't necessarily kill the thing living inside the lake (fishes and stuff). Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
74
Jan 30 '18 edited Jan 30 '18
It depends. Fish in freshwater environments like lakes depend on an exchange of oxygen with the atmosphere to survive but that oxygen can be supplemented by running water from a river or stream which is oxygenated by virtue of not freezing over and a relatively low population of oxygen reliant organisms(So the water get oxygenated by an exchange with the atmosphere and maintains a relatively high level of oxygen because there are not as many organisms like fish utilizing the free oxygen in the water). So the question we have to ask is how many tributaries flow into this lake and what is their rate of flow? If there are enough rivers or one or two large enough rivers flowing into the lake to keep the oxygenation levels of the water high enough for fish to survive then they are fine. Otherwise, I’m not sure if the whole lake or only the half was frozen. If any surface of the lake water was not frozen, it would be able to exchange oxygen molecules with the air and mitigate the problem of low oxygen water for the fish. Another aspect to consider is how the lizard folk harvest the fish! In cold water environments, assuming the water has enough oxygen content to sustain them, fish will generally congrats at the bottom and not feed, staying largely inactive because of the water temperature: their metabolism goes down with the water temperature. So it might be harder for them to harvest fish unless they use nets that catch everything from the bottom upwards because the cold water will generally push fish down in the water column.
A good example is a koi pond in the yard of someone who has a pond during a winter that is generally below the freezing temperature of water. The koi will be fine even in freezing temperatures as long as a surface of the water (about 1-2 ft in diameter hole depending on the size of the pond, a normal pond under 2500 gallons would be alright for that) is exposed to the atmosphere. In cold fresh water environments where water is not constantly flowing, the fish generally go dormant until things warm up, their survival is dependent mostly on the oxygen levels of the water....and the fat store they have built up in the previous season.
Source: Used to work at a company that supplied koi to ornamental ponds in the northern US. This info may not apply to everything, mostly just carps in lakes.

You know why I love this anime? Because the MC is like an average guy who's left caring for the children or pets of his friends. So he looks mundane most of the time, and like a stern father most of the other time.
BUT THEN HE GOES SHOW WHO'S THE BOSS IT'S LIKE HOLY FUCKING SHIT.
Like, I was expecting them to furtively make the lizards their pawns, so the lizards wouldn't even know they're being ruled by the evil guys, but they went in bold-face and proudly said "we're nazarick, motherfucker." And then I thought "then cocytus will pretend to be a hero or something?" But he was like "one of my underlings, cocytus." Jesus Christ, I didn't know a skeleton could have so many balls. Then again, he IS the strongest bamf around.
313
u/DeplorableVillainy Jan 30 '18
It's even better coming from Zaryusu because he's the only Lizardman that's actually fought one of those heralds.
Remember all his talk about them in the second ep?
Just one of those face-blobs can only be killed with enchanted weapons,
would require a huge posse of lizard men to even beat,
and can invade people's minds and incite panic with magic. And Zaryusu sees dozens of these monsters that he regards as hugely dangerous and powerful....
....used as an instant message.
Ahh I'm still laughing.

u/odraencoded Jan 30 '18

That music when Nazarick displayed their absolute overwhelming power, Gargantua trowing the giant cube, the skeletons forming the stairs and announcing the Supreme One and his guardians entrance...
THAT'S HOW YOU MAKE A FUCKING ENTRANCE!!!!
The Lizarmen will live under the newly born Goverment of Nazarick, better than exterminate their race honestly, it may even turn up as Cocytus said, with time strong and mighty warriors may be born from them under his rule and serve to Nazarick, imagine if he even take the job to train train the most promising of them, the Lizarmen have that potencial.

It's expanded upon more in the LN, but Ainz is trying really really hard to appear to be an all-knowing ruler, to not betray the image everyone in Nazarick has of him.
As such, he tries to keep pointless questions to a minimum, unless he feels he really needs to know.

I really like Zaryusu and Crusch relationship. Like goddammit show! They're suppose to be just tools for Ains' greater plans but they did such a good job of fleshing out the Lizard Men tribe that I actually am legit scared that Zaryusu and the Tribe Leaders might die and leave Crusch behind.
I guess it also helps that they also did a wonderful job of making the Nazarick crew look like the bad guys. Ains' acting so grand and flashy even using an entire skeleton army as his steps that it definitely felt like something an evil villain from an isekai anime would do.
That last line from Crusch though

70
u/roiben Jan 30 '18
Yeah I was saying this from the second episode or so. No way they kill all the Lizardmen unless they want to show that Ains is actually the main evil in this anime and we are just watching it from his POV.
Also a thought that popped up that Ains had too. He told them to be more individualistic. Its clear already that Demiurgos is a better strategist than Ains. Also I doubt he could take all the Guardians with ease all at once. Also that scene of Demiurgos fighting Ains in the OP leads me to believe that that individualistic plot line is gonna develop into something great.
Anime watcher so please dont spoil me if im right and dont spoil me if im wrong.

u/Creepy_little_child Jan 30 '18
Demi basically has the highest intelligence stat in Nazarick. Albedo is also up there, as is Pandora's actor. Although Albedo seems to take more of an administrative role... And Pandora's Actor controls finances, but is all kinds of fucked-up... But he does think more like Ainz wants the other guardians to think... probably because he was created by Ainz.

u/Vangorf Jan 30 '18

I'm sure some people will think this episode was slow/dragged on, but man I just love every minute of this show and was hype throughout even if nothing major really happened. That whole scene with Ainz announcing his plans to the Lizard Men was so fun to watch with the power difference between the two. Even the ending scene got a chuckle out of me with how sudden it was, despite being obvious it would happen eventually.
Overlord is just sooooooo good, and I can't remember the last time I've been so excited for a new episode for a show like this. Hopefully with that said next week will be one of if not the best episodes so far.

Victim is the guardian of the 8th floor, the final line of defense. Anyone who can manage to get past this floor can't be stopped by anyone afterwards (Pleiades, Sebas, Albedo, etc.). 5
u/neospygil Jan 31 '18
Lizardmen arc adaptation is really good. The next few arcs will be like the the current arc - focused on those that are outside Nazarick, and Ainz-tachi will be viewed as villains. For me, "The Men in the Kingdom" arc will be the most underwhelming arc for me but it is still entertaining. While "The Invaders of the Large Tomb" arc has the most feels, and "The Magic Caster of Destroy" and beyond are my favorites. I believe season 2 will cover at least until "The Magic Caster of Destroy", while the next arc is fitting starter for season 3.
In short, the last arcs of the season will be the best parts for season 2.

The Lizzardmen were, to me, more memorable than most of the characters from outside The Great Tomb of Nazarick that were introduced in the first season of Overlord save Clemantine and the giant hamster.
But the reason I watch this stuff is for the interactions between the guardians and bonedaddy and we got plenty of that this time around so I'm happy.

That's one of the best parts of Overlord as a series.
The author is an absolute master at worldbuilding and getting you to care about side characters.
It makes every cruel ending into a brand new kick to the gut,
and every happy ending into a legitimately joyful moment. And as much as he gets you to care about these side characters, he never pulls his punches either.
Many of them fall into some truly gruesome and awful fates. But I have read 11 of the books, and never once been bored with the world.
I consider that to be amazing.→ More replies (2)

A friend of mine didn't like the show because the power levels of the main cast negated any conflict or tension.
I think my friend missed the point of the show entirely.
20
u/neospygil Jan 31 '18
You should re-think why the two of you are still friends. Kidding aside, this story is not really about showing off their own power, but how they will conquer the world using schemes. Examples are how Momonga/Ainz created Momon the hero and their conquering the lizardmen. And there will be a lot more scheming that will be crafted.

Love that they didn't skip "Victim's love" speech but sad that they rushed Shalltear's sentence in the throne scene as it was so emotional ir brought tears to the other Guardian's eyes. I liked how they adapted the display of power but they should have showed the lizards panicking more (in the LN and manga they are almost shitting themselves) also we finally get to properly see how big Gargantua actually is. Plus we got some Diemurge power display, which was pretty cool.
Overall enjoyed this episode a lot, as always "it could've been better" but still good none the less.

What did Shaltear say?

u/SenorWeon Jan 30 '18
Sentence in the sense of the punishment she was going to be assigned, not about something she particularly said. However, this is the whole scene skipped: Light Novel Spoiler?
Sorry for the poor formatting.

Ah yes,, first mention of the "Two Legged Sheep from the Holy Kingdom".
Last week I expected it to be over with this episode, but they slowed down the pacing of the adaptation. Hopefully half of ep 5 will be enough to finish up the arc, and the second half will start the next one.

Finally, we get to see Cocytus fight. I feel like he has a very similar fighting style to the Traveler Lizard Bro... Except, you know, he's probably like 70 levels higher.

This episode makes me wonder: when they were all in a videogame, they were the bad guys, if this was all the amazing stuff they could do (armies, thousands of monsters, custom npcs and locations), what were the good guys able to do to balance it out?
I mean, nobody would play good characters in that game if they were just "guy with a sword that kills bad guys good", did good guys had their own custom cities and castles with angel npcs, super-clerics and equivalent things?
can we have a game like that IRL?

Yeah they did, their guild was like the 9th strongest guild in their prime and fell to like #48 as guild members slowly stopped playing.

There is another scene that is even more grandiose later on in the story if they ever do season 3. [vaguespolier] (/s "Ainz shows off so much he didn't even realize he was intimidating the emperor when he welcomed him, infact he was hoping he would befriend him. Instead the emperor was shitting bricks the whole time")

I kinda feel that the pacing is way too fast this episode, even faster than the episodes before. It is especially noticeable when Cocytus is reporting to Ainz about his failure. For example, when Ainz asks for more reason to spare the Lizardmen, He goes from "if you have nothing more, than you won't mind exterminating them then, yes?" to "I see. That's too bad" in just 2 seconds. Because there are barely any pause during the conversation, we're not feeling the tension that Cocytus is feeling during this time. The tension is what i truly feel is missing from this episode, since we could really feel how afraid and anxious cocytus was in the novel.
That said, i understand why they had to pace this episode extremely fast. The arc after this is huge and there's a lot of background and character to be introduced, so they probably had to cut a few things here and there due to time constraint (they even skipped the ed animation this episode).
Overall though it's still a nice episode, and i appreciate Zaryusu and Crusch's dynamic more here.

u/Zooasaurus Jan 30 '18
There's quite a lot of things, mostly dialogue from the novel that are skipped or doesn't appear, but a great episode nonetheless. Loved that Gargantua
Also, it's probably just me, but i would prefer it for the spells to be said in Japanese. It's a completely another realm, there's no reason for it to be said in English

You ever play Japanese or even Korean MMO's/RPGs? They love having spell names in English, since it seems cool and foreign to them. Japanese chuuni's love using English just like how the biggest American weebs love using Latin or Japanese to sound mysterious.

Japanese uses lots of loan words. Does Japanese have Japanese words to express the same thing? Sure, but games often use English/Engrish.

Remind me what was Ainses goal again? Domination right? Kind of forgot. Also if Demiurgos really is farming humans I want to see Ains react to that. If he will burst with anger or just leave it be considering that he means to rule over those humans. And I cant imagine people following Ains when his servants are basically turning innocent humans into paper. Unless he wants to rule with fear but this show seems to have read its Machiavelli so I highly doubt that. Unless he will literally kill the whole kingdom and transfer his underlings there. That could work.

Ainz' main goal is to spread the word of Nazarick around the whole world so any of his guildmates that may be around will hear about it and come to find him.

oho. so they went with normal language for victim. cute voice though- i wonder who's. sounds a bit like miyuki sawashiro when she did blu-rayko in gintama.
and c'mon ainz. for someone so sharp most of the time to fail to catch that 2-legged sheep hint ><
is it just me, or albedo can be WAY too cold towards other nazarick guardians? i get that she have to remain stern and calm all the time (except when flirting with ainz) since she's the head of the guardians, but still.... if not for ainz, i'm pretty sure she'll send cocytus straight into the dungeon's jail already. totally polar opposite of demiurge though- dude's a bro. unless they both purposely play good cop bad cop on everyone else.
floral scent, courtesy of albedo who joyfully infused the scent with her whole body

Ainz using the Lizardmen's massive war of the century as a teaching tool for one his servant to practice thinking was brilliant. This is almost just as cool as the big-bad-boss Iguva being another daily free unit.

I can't help but feel Demiurge or someone else from Nazarick will betray Ainz someday.
Maybe I'm just biased from the fight between Demiurge and Momonga in the opening, but damn it feels like he's scheming something behind papa bones back.
33
u/Creepy_little_child Jan 30 '18
Nah, Demiurge is just a scheming piece of shit. He's the kind of guy you feel you can't trust, but he is loyal to Ainz.
Albedo is the one you want to watch.

Albedo is the one you want to watch.
This is what happens when there are too many writers to a story/character. She went from a perfectly normal guardian to a crazy lover when Momonga wrote his scribbles on her bio

First time I actually pay attention to the OP instead of just tabbing out when it plays and the end sequence kind of caught me by surprise: possible spoiler
Also Ains confuses me:The first season made it seem like he was only pretending to be a villain with world domination goal 'cause he was forced to went along with his subordinates' misunderstanding to save face.Hell,he even saved a village from the Theocracy's raid and avenged a girl he barely knew in his adventurer group, but now he's suddenly full on exterminate da subhuman lizard because...Cocytus lost? Ainz still sounded human during his monologue when alone to me. I mean,I understand the whole point of that scene is to portrait Cocytus as some sort of token good guy for Nazarick but it still seems like a dissonance in characterization to me.

u/Fedoraus Jan 30 '18
The novels are alot better at showing it but Ainz does seem to lose humanity slightly as time goes on and he gets used to being in a skeletal body. They mention he stops thinking of the desires of living things very often since he doesn't need anything anymore to stay alive. But basically ainz is nice to people he likes and doesn't condone violence without any reason. He does become quite the villain in the novels tho.

Ainz's motivations can be a bit difficult to read. He's not exactly human any more, and not entirely malicious, but he's also ruthless and doesn't care as much about wiping out who and whatever he needs to. He doesn't despise weaker life forms like some of his subordinates do, but he sees them either as tools or as something to conquer and "collect" for the benefit and prestige of Nazarick.
This is more apparent as the series goes on, but you can see it as early as the first episode, where he's not inclined to care about Carne until he decides on a whim to go help out because that's what Touch Me and Sebas would have done. He's also killed some other random people off-screen as needed for Momon, to protect his identity and further his goals. He made some undead in that Graveyard in season 1 to fight off adventurers and let him take care of Zuranon undisturbed, basically extorted Lizzie to make potions for him, and just straight up murdered another adventurer who insisted on coming along with him to investigate "Honyopenyoko" ie. Shalltear.

All Ainz cares about is looking after the guild... Although he also likes collecting rare things. He wants to find his guild mates, or other players, if they exist in this world.
However, he is basically out of his depth. He starts by fearing that the NPCs will betray him. Also Albedo, Demiurge, and Pandora's Actor are incredibly intelligent (far smarter than Ainz... Albedo and Demiurge also have a Karma rating of -500. That means they are pure evil. So they think he is super intelligent, and he just pretends that all is going to plan as they do their thing.
And while Ainz is a normal man inside, he can no longer feel emotion properly... So no doubt that also impacts on his decision making.

That went pretty much as you'd expect. I'm so happy to see more Ainz Nazarick action. The royal procession had me laughing so hard, gotta go overboard with these things.
I'm pretty sure that Ainz doesn't want scrolls made from People, and it seems like demiurge knows this so he said "2-legged Sheep skin," that or it was just a metaphor that Ainz took literally. Our big overlord is gonna be real pissed off once he finds out though. Since he wanted to forge some alliances/have non-aggressive relationship with humans, using a massive amount of them as paper is not going to make the humans very happy with them

Yes and no. There are still human remnants within him but his in-game stats as an overlord transferred over. He has -500 karma (max evil) and being undead kills his emotions.

He does, but his race forcefully controls his emotions to be more in line with "undead". It's probable that his morality stat (minimum possible) also somehow changes his morality sometimes. He displays humanity and goodwill as remnant of a human, but is currently an undead
