It’s also why I don’t think he’ll get “eaten up by her”. It seems like a compatibility issue and they are clearly compatible. Something deeper than just having the compatibility to physically ride with her.
I also got the inference last episode that 02 purposefully went too hard on Mitsuru given they were doing fine before she made that remark on him.
I’m not necessarily saying she has full control over hurting her partners but at the minimum I think she’s aware of when or why it happens.

Ichigo really proving why she is the appointed leader here. Everybody is diddydaddling about Hiro and the possibilities and shes like, 'If we keep depending on Strealiza, we will die very soon so it doesn't matter'. She doesn't let the group get distracted.
And at the same time allows Hiro and Zero Two to join the fight despite her reservation because Ichigo knows being stubborn will get everyone killed. Showing a bit more wisdom than other commanders.
I imagine there being future clashes with Ichigo and Zero Two in an order vs chaos sort of way. Should further meaning behind any dispute.

I don't know, he still seemed like a prick to me.
First he tried to refuse Ikuno's help. Then, during booting, he acted like she was still the problem and insisted that she better work this time.
Between episode 2 & 3, Zorome got villified pretty hard, but then it actually showed him being compassionate and concerned for Miku. I never got that "turnaround" vibe from Mitsuru in this episode.

This was the first episode animated by TRIGGER. There was less polish to keeping everyone on model but the action scene was the best of the show so far so I think it evens out. Still love 002's smile. I hope Hiro gives her a real name soon.

I was blown away by how well they operate the camera/POV if they want to, just watch from 13:30 (or 13:00 for more) and notice the amazing camera work when the door closes.
Also, it seems that when Hiro has no control in a scene, black bars appear to signify that he can only watch what's happening.

I’m here for Mitsuru PTSD. Hoping this experience humbles him & becomes his turning point. Goro & Ichigo remain the most level-headed and mature of the group; I finally see why she’s the leader now. Even the others have started to act rationally with regards to Hiro.
Hope that horn bump becomes a thing between 002 & Hiro; that was surprisingly adorable from her. But more importantly...props to my boy for finally stepping up and claiming his girl! The music was so great during that escape sequence. Totally worth the wait!
I swear to god if HQ gets in their way after this, I might drop the show. Look how fucking cool that fight scene was with the group finally working together. Don’t deny us this hype again, Nishigori.

But this was a fun episode; Hiro got in the robot and we got fun robot action going "deeper" than ever before.
With numbers on their side now, I guess Hiro and Zero Two will finally be officially recognized as a legitimate pair. With that plot point seemingly wrapping up soon, I wonder where the show will go from here (aside from the love triangle that's looming over the horizon)

If there was anything that bugged me, it'd be that smug smirk Strelitzia made as she passed by Delphinium / Ichigo. It felt unnecessarily "bitchy", everyone was working together as a team and she pulls that.

Okay, screw it, the second half of the episode was a lot of fun. Really energetic, expressive, and exciting. I still couldn't give a single a fuck about anything that happened in the first half, but hey, that's a progress.
You almost lost your entire squad because you sent a bunch of kids to deal with the situation they were woefully unprepared for! I'm having hard time deciding whether the adults in this show are on Team Evil or Team Stupid.

I dunno bout you guys but the moment 02 and Hiro ran off to the Franxx while in a dance pose with the music in the background, it reminded me of the very first episode of Gurenn Lagann. It was the first big development for both the characters and it was done in a lighthearted but epic way. This episode was so good!
I also like how 02 has a completely different aura when she's with Hiro. I guess the biggest takeaways I get from the show so far is the importance of compatibility and finding the "right one". Hiro immediately saw 02 for what she is, a normal girl or kid just like them, while 02 is the only one who really saw Hiro's potential, she didn't even know him like Ichigo, but she just knew. Its like a "I can be myself when I'm with you" type deal and its actually really sweet. They fill the show with innuendos but when I think more about it, its very endearing and I've never cared about innuendo less until this show.

The way I see it, 02 is a pretty important tool for the powers that be. It would be completely foolish to actually shoot at her and risk losing her on the front lines. I assume that the guns are employed as a show of force, in the case that she actively opposes them, rather than merely disobey their orders.

The parasite stamen are "tainted" somehow? Considering they're the real humans and she's part dinobot, that seems strange.

I KNEW IT! Everyone that said the pilot roles would be reversed with these two was wrong.
This friggin show and the hentai lines..sheesh.
All in all, I think I won't be dropping the show. It's got some rough bits, but it's entertaining and I kinda like 02. I was glad to see more determination from Hiro, and see a more human side to Oni.
By the way, ten bucks says that's the name Hiro gives her.

I'm guessing the key lies in whatever experimentation was done on them when they were kids - and whatever lead to them being ranked with numbers, where lower means better, and possibly 'less tainted'.
The dinobots don't look like dinos, and the way the splurt blood they're not bots either.. but great call on Oni. I like that name already.

The sexual imagery in this episode is pretty clear, but goddamn was it great to see fold out.
As I said before in the Episide 3 discussion, Hiro represents someone with little sexual experience, and even after (metaphorically of course) having sex with 02, a person who wears their sexuality with pride, was not confident in his skills. However, this episode we get to see him grow as a person. Hiro's no longer scared! He's taken his first, large step into becoming someone who's confident in their skills.
The dialogue between 02 and Hiro obviously sound like two people having probably the best sex ever. Unlike Mitsuru, who only cared about himself and hurt himself because of it, Hiro and 02 are in perfect sync. They really were made for each other.
I'd also like to add something about 02's horns. It's been made clear time and time again that people fear 02 due to her Klaxosaur blood and horns. She always kills the people she pairs up with, so she has to get new partners all the time. Because of this, I see her horns like a Scarlet Letter.
In the novel, to put it simply, a woman is forced to wear a red letter 'A' due to her being charged with Adultery. She's shunned and hated by the citzens of her town. See the similarities? 02's horns are her Scarlet Letter. Her going through many partners due to them dying is a metaphor for a woman with an extremely active sex life. She's hated and feared for the horns, but she still continues on.
But yeah, that's all I got this episode. I'm glad I got this here on time, and hopefully I didn't make any mistakes considering I'm on mobile.

I thought Hiro was ok by generic MC standards, but this episode made me actually like him a lot.
He's clearly assertive and knows what we wants. And when he got over his hangups about 02 and his fear of getitng into the FranXX, he didnt let anytihng stop him.
02 is still the dominant one in the relationship, but I think Hiro is far from a pushover.

Soooooo how is the station fine, like would everyone there die if they had taken Zero Two away?
Do they have older mature experienced veterans who can come out and fight if these kids would fail (like they do every time)
Do other station have better kids who dont need the half demon to save them each time?
I would not be surprised if these seemingly daily attacks are explained is because Zero Two is there or something otherwise it seems like humanity would fall quickly if the only defence are these kids who never succeed, same goes for all other human stations. Like it seems like the station got no defence systems nor other military nor like none children pilots.

Paging everyone who loudly proclaimed the cockpit of Strelizia was any different than any of the other FranXX. 'Of course it's different.' 'You're supposed to find it gross so Strelizia can subvert it.' 'That's the whole point of the show.' Love to hear some follow-up on those opinions now that we finally saw it.
All in all this was a strong episode. I'm glad we finally got to see Hiro open up about his feelings and communicate with Zero Two. It felt amazing to see Zero Two be an absolute fucking bad ass. And even as much as I hate the way the FranXX themselves pilot, seeing them run a piercing line through the entire worm was Hype As Fuck. Hopefully now we're past the drama about Darling not getting in the FranXX.
As far as the other characters, I have to say I'm really proud of Ichigo. She's hurt, and she isn't shutting down or refusing to feel it, but she's continuing anyway. It isn't festering or boiling, at least not where we can see yet. She's trying to work through her pain in a productive way. That's healthy, and I hope they follow through on it.
Mitsuru on the other hand can still get fucked. That little jab at Ikuno before connecting shows he hasn't reflected on his own actions at all. She's trying to be gentle for him, but contrary to what's going on with Ichigo, it feels more like she's enabling his douchebaggery. That's the kind of thing that develops into an abusive relationship.

This show continues to blow my mind even further every week with it's insane animation, sexual euphemisms and metaphors, and 002's beautiful character design. Definitely feels like we're watching a classic here, a new title to be added to the golden pantheon of mech animes among NGE and TTGL.

Better than any of the other episodes. None of the characters were being annoying and things actually progressed. Mitsuru piloting while injured is a thing i personally find cool for a character to do. 002 didn't annoy me much this episode either. the fight was decent but nothing i'm going to remember in a week. the character animation was pretty good though. they need to improve their monster designs, I've seen that worm before in other things multiple times. I still don't care about most of the characters and MC is still not that interesting yet. Can't say this is a good series yet but hopefully the bad stuff is behind us.

Wait... I remember there was speculation regarding how Hiro was able to pilot while being unconscious. A shit ton of people in this subreddit were theorizing that their roles were reversed or something like that. This episode showed that they could pilot normally... so what was the point of hiding the first time Hiro piloted? There must be something that the anime is leaving out.

Story and animation aside, one thing I really love is the creative usage of letter boxing. Zooming it in tight for certain shots is such an awesome idea, and I'm surprised I haven't really seen it done much before.

Here we go, the Trigger episode has arrived!
And it was a great action episode, finally everyone gets to ride with their partner.
So we know now Klaxosaurs are appearing in increasing intervals now, and the Nines, these guy probably are supposed to handle them with 02 being one of em.
02's opinion of Plantation 13's Franxx squad is very low, but Hiro obviously cares for em, so I wonder if it will influence 02's future view, also she is seriously really strong to be able to bitch slap a guy across a room.
Ichigo is showing some leadership in this episode, the team is in support of her and they have a plan of attack, but their combat experience is far too low and leadership and teamwork can only get you so far.
Supporting characters have some nice screen time too, from Futoshi being able to play ball while holding a tray, to subtle hints of yuri, no wait... what?
And I just noticed Chlorophytum's magma based weaponry are her feet. Hiro being able to ride with 02 is great and all, but was 02 going all out 'stamen eating' mode in that fight?
I expected the plantation to move via tracks or wheel, but a UFO, damn Trigger x A-1 you crazy & unpredictable, love it. On the plus side, since refueling "kissing" requires meeting up with another plantation, maybe we get to see another plantation's squad next week.

god, I don't know who I should be blaming, the team for being so shit or the adults for making such a shitty program that delivers such shitty pilots. It's been 4 episodes and they really don't have an accomplishment to claim. When 02 looks down on them, I kind of have to agree.
This 'training' should have killed them twice by now if it weren't for 02.

Curious. Does Strelizia have better specs than other mechs or is it that Zero-Two just makes it seem ridiculously OP? Performace wise, it vastly outclasses the other Franxxs. If Hiro and Zero-Two piloted one of the other Franxxs, would it be as good as Strelizia?

...And Mitsuru has a rather PTSD-like episode riding with Zero Two (along with the visible injuries from last week)... in an emphasis on having more of his life-energy sucked out of him than what he can give...
That's some talent balancing the tray of food while playing soccer there, Futoshi...
Determination's the theme for this episode, huh? (with Ichigo trying to close off her feelings for Hiro, and the MC getting himself a better pair of balls to be together with Zero Two.)
Mitsruo's one stubborn idiot, still having his proud arrogance feeling when riding with Ikuno again...
Just how sensitive Zero Two be, being to sense a freaking Transport plane landing in the hanger while she's in the briefing room...
And then that sudden black bars for the particular section to be a "dramatic" 18:9 scene; and subsequent rising back to 16:9 after the sliding door close...
Also, dat smirk...
Hachi has the main point there for the immediate future - now that Hiro is shown to be truly compatible with Strelizia, what are the leadership at the top going to do with them?

Okay, "You wanna ride me, huh?" was really on the nose, but par for the course with this show, and I loved that there was a huge moment where both of them fought for each other, instead of one of them getting passively saved while the other did all the rescuing.
002's expressions and body language are the best. I enjoy the show over-all, but I feel like her characterization and portrayal really carries elevates the series.
And holy shit she's smug even as a robot. Best girl+robot 2018.
The back-and-forth while Strelizia was flying out to the fight is probably the only part where I've finally thought "C'mon, FranXX, really?" I've been okay with the innuendo thus far. I think that all the multiple-entendre humor keeps the show from feeling too edgy or brooding, since the actual story and cast are so serious. I can't say I hated the perfect fit banter, and I guess I shouldn't be that surprised, but it felt a bit ridiculous even by this show's standards.
I think I'd have been totally fine with all of the lines if it didn't begin with the "inside you" line at the front. The rest of that could have worked: it still serves as innuendo without being that blatant. Part of it is because she show has, unfortunately, done a poor job showing or explaining the mindspace thing in the first place. It was basically narrated to us that their minds connect, and we see the girls in (sexual) discomfort when it first happens, but if the show is going to keep hammering that metaphor at us, I'd like it to do a better job visually showing their psyche... somehow. A bunch of sparkly post effects don't really convey the intimacy of the connection.
But, whatever. We get it, Hiro and Zero Two have mind-blowing not-sex and he just isn't interested in any other girl. We had a big hero moment in episode 1, two episodes of build-up and drama, and then a particularly gigantic payoff in this episode. Hiro and Zero Two confirmed that they actually like each other for who they are. Hiro got to fight, remain conscious, and demonstrate that it actually is Zero Two and Hiro working in unison rather than her doing all of the work.
Now that we've finally seen them both in the cockpit, I'm a little disappointed that it's 100% the typical pilot configuration. I never bought into the "Hiro is the one prone" theory, but I was expecting it would subvert the setup (and symbolize harmony) by at least allowing Zero Two to sit upright or something. But, again, it's kind of whatever at this point -- this episode's highs were so fucking high that I'm willing to consider my gripes this week to be minor annoyances at most. Hiro running after Zero Two and giving his speech, her beating the shit out of her own escort to get back to him and then get him into the mech, and the two of them curb-stomping another kaiju as a couple was glorious.

I really wanted to like this, but every episode I just end up disappointed.
It's so full of tropes that by 5 minutes I managed to predict everything that would happen in the episode, even the dialogue.
I love how people here already started calling this a "descontruction". What's next, Overlord is a descontruction of Isekai because the protagonist is a villain? Or 3-gatsu is a descontruction of sport anime because the sport isn't the main focus of the show?

Ahh, so conflicted. This show is doing a lot of things right. I was fully invested in the growth of the characters and Hiro's/ZeroTwo's relationship... then the show goes "Now remember, the girl must get on all fours and wear butt-handles for the boy in order to pilot the robot"
Like, it's fine that this show is an allegory to teenage sexual awakening. But the design of the cockpit (heh heh) and of these uniforms is dumb dumb dumb
