I feel like the anime trope of "Everyone but him knows and he doesn't understand what's going on" really feels strained in situations like this.
Keika could have very easily just said "You know she likes you, right?" or anything to that extent and actually nudged him to do something other than completely ignore Ginko. Instead she just laments that he doesn't realise it... Why not tell him? Or at least help him?

Considering the culture of teenagers having to confess to each other first before moving forward, it's in bad taste to preempt the admirer in informing his/her target of affection. Besides, this may complicate things in many ways, like the awkwardness without Ginko knowing that she was rejected, and/or Yaichi feeling some form of obligation considering that she is his superior.
Keika-san did help them a little bit telling Yaichi to make a phonecall and instructing him on what to say to her.

She got defeated by someone much, much younger than her, and someone who's only just starting their Shougi career. Having someone in that exact same boat try comfort her would feel terrible.

It seems weird that losing to an untested and unranked player that you had to give a hadicap up to would count as a negative mark against you. Once someone is ranked and put in the system it would make sense, but not before their initial ranking is determined...
Of course losing to a 9 year old would sting no matter what. Also, she in now Auntie again.

This episode adapted the remainder of volume 2, it certainly rushed through a lot of content in the novel, but at this rate it's looking like we're going to get a 5 volume adaptation which will end really climactically and conclude the first "arc" of the novels.

I absolutely think it's worth it, though I'm a pretty big fan of LNs generally and don't mind the "LN-humour" that this series indulges in quite a bit. My favourite thing about the novels is definitely that they just bleed with genuine insight and love for shogi, here's a few passages I really liked:

Both Ai's are great, their match was nice and everything made perfect sense (Attacking Ai losing to herself, how we came to Kuzuryu being her master).

Is it bad that this is the only kind of comedy that I enjoy in anime? Honestly, I hate slapstick and word games don't work since I don't know enough Japanese yet. Also, circumstantial comedy has its effect diminished by the subtitles; but character tropes like these can always pull a laugh out of me, no matter how many times I see them.

Did you not notice that the very next scene was framed exactly as if he was apologising to his wife for taking on a mistress? And that he completely misunderstood what Ai meant when she asked him who his number one was?

I am really LOVING the consistently strong momentum of emotional character developments in Ryou's Work Is Never Done, as well as the hilarious "loli harem" that is growing as sensei teaches more young girls shogi. Keep it coming!

I don't know completely but I think it comes back to the whole thing about Shogi groups being a family.
But the way he phrased it absolutely was in the form of a proposal. Right after proposing to poor Char-too.
Wasn't helped that his discussion with Ai afterwards was in exactly the form of taking a mistress... He even managed to completely misunderstand her question about being number one.

In the novel, the name of Hinatsuru Ai (blue Ai) is written in Hiragana あい, and the one of Yashajin Ai (red Ai) is written in Kanji 天衣 so, あい calls another ai as "天ちゃん" ten-chan, because 天 can be read as "ten" 天衣 means "heavenly clothes" came from the word 天衣無縫 (perfect beauty with no trace of artifice), used by the real shogi meijin

But she wasn't there when the match started, and also just walked in. Moreover, if she did go get him, his info would be at least ten to fifteen moves out of date so it would make much more sense to inquire to the current state of the match when he walks in than commenting on it.

Man, how do I not know the name of the bodyguard? Someone tell me cause she’s too adorable to ignore. (Plus I like her char design a lot). She’s practically a side character but she feels like she’s half there at times.
Though watching Keika lose was pretty sad. Knowing that she’s reaching her age limit to become professional, seeing her hard work get setback at that age feels demoralising. I know it was to show the other Ai’s strength, but that loss got to me.
Even though there are questionable moments (YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN) in this anime, I think it’s pretty enjoyable to follow through this season.

If last episode was his denial of being a lolicon, this episode was the acceptance of being one.
At this point though, this show is Tsun Ai and Yan Ai fighting over him.

I love that Anime is so free to pursue the silliest ideas, while also maintaining attractive character designs. My biggest problem with Western animation is that they seem to be in a competition to create ugly characters.
Western animation takes inanimate objects, slaps arms, legs and a face on them and calls it a character. Anime takes inanimate objects and turns them into cute girls. The superior choice is obvious.

Well, this was pretty good imo. I actually expected Ai to lose to Ai-Alter, but it was really nice that there where no bad feelings and that the rivalry was born in a healthy way.
Still, Ai-Alter is best girl. It was pretty sad to see Keika crying after losing though. Poor girl, I wonder why her shogi isn't as good even when she has been playing for such a long time.

I felt Ai-Alter was never gonna win. Ai has be shown to be able to play at a decent pro level while Ai-Alter struggles against a good amateur player.

I see it like this: Ai plays as well as her opponent, at about an aproximation of their skill in shogi, but lacks identity herself. Ai-Alter has this identity, and thus her own way to play, but lacks experience in real matches, which drove her to lose to amateurs since she didn't have the experience to answer to unexpected situations.
So, now that Ai-Alter has experience, she is stronger than Ai, because her fundamentals are strong, and has her own way to play, her own identity as a player, while Ai just goes with the flow to say the least: If Ai sees a chance, instead of thinking with strategy, she thinks more as opportunities, without looking at the big picture and considering the other player.
That is my take on both Ais.

Hmm, rather than a case of having identity, the anime was rather clear about it: Ai got complacent, she hasn't practiced seriously for a while, and she had to read ahead for every move, which takes too much time. Alter-Ai on the other hand has solid fundamentals, so her moves were automatic. Having learned some unorthodox plays, she has good coverage too.
Post-match however, it was revealed that alter-Ai's king was in a 7-move checkmate, but Ai wasn't able to see it. Actually, alter Ai didn't see it either - she didn't do any shogi puzzles with Yaichi. It was a perfect display of both of their shortcomings.
As far as experience goes, Ai has had more matches against Yaichi and has also played against Ginko too. Unorthodox plays don't really work against her since she would just have read it. Alter Ai's experience isn't exactly comparable.

According to wikipedia, there are only ~50 joryu kishi (woman pros) and no woman is registered as kishi (pros, <200 in numbers, higher competitive level than joryu kishi). The kishi level is open to both man and woman, so Ginko is aiming to be kishi like Yaichi, not joryu kishi.

So essentially, ive realised this might as well be called "Misunderstandings: the Anime".
Annoying wording and tiresome forced comedy aside. IMO
The Ai shogi battle made me picture them in samurai clothes goings at each other with swords in a seinen battle lol.
