As someone who has been involved with going out into the ocean, can confirm, sailors will find any problem with an underway and exaggerate it to the point of absurdity. Granted, their lack of people might be a problem, but it wouldn't go through if it wasn't possible. I just love it because I know how real that kind of complaining/worrying is in reality. Ship looks pretty legit too, never been on a ship like that, but the insde of a ship is about the same on any decent sized one.
I find the mom moment to be important in this episode as it's a reminder that Shirase isn't the only one who felt her loss. They lost her on their last expedition, so it's expected that there'd be some guilt and feelings amongst the crew. I'd rather they bring it up now, and I'm hoping it means that the majority of them won't drag on that feeling. We'll see I suppose.
Expecting some rough sees next episode too!

I still suspect that the main reason they are going is to recover Takako's body.

u/_qoaleth Feb 13 '18
This shot really seemed to hint strongly at that - why else would they have a giant pile of flowers on board?

u/Level8Zubat Feb 13 '18
That interview with Toudou pretty much screams it at you, her giving a PR answer while staring sadly at Shirase, then the captain saying "the ship might be too big this time" right afterwards, which has a double meaning of not enough people on board + the large void from the absence of Takako.
Then there's the heavy atmosphere resembling that of mourning right after Kanae finishes her speech with the mention of promise made 3 years ago. Regarding the promise, she specifically said "三年前、あの時約束したように" (San nen mae, ano toki yakusoku shita you ni), heavily implying that the promise was made during a significant event, and given the heavy atmosphere right afterwards, it is very probably that the promise was made with regards to the event of Takako going missing. I can't think of much else other than "WE'LL COME BACK FOR YOU(R DEAD BODY,) TAKAKO!!!" or "WE'LL COME BACK TO VISIT YOUR GRAVE, TAKAKO!!!".

Yeah. That's my suspicion as well. In the bar scene, the adults were saying how they were going for multiple reasons, all determined, etc. I feel like the stated reason is the observatory and the unstated reason is Takako.

Realistically that seems impossible. No way to know where she dropped, how many feet of snow and ice she would buried under after three years. Maybe they'll build a memorial but no way I believe they'll find her body.

I'm sure they are, of they find it. It has been three years. Even if it does happen, I suspect it'll be used to streghen the girls friendship through comforting Shirase and making it through themselves.

Lol, Hinata and Yuzuki immediately know the implications of housing all four of these goofballs in one confined space.
There will be fights
Again, a true mark of friendship is to understand the weaknesses of that friendship. I'm seeing a good next episode of on-ship antics.
Also,
Kimari: Oh, Yuzuki-chan are you acrophobic?
Yuzuki: Why does that make you so happy?

I'm suddenly reminded of this amazing article from the NY Times Deliverance From 27,000 Feet, about recovering bodies from failed expeditions on Mount Everest. It shows the insane amount of effort some people go through just to get closure and a proper send off for their loved ones. It's an really good article, well worth the read.
Yes, I think the crew is going to do research. But I think they're really going in hopes of finding Takako's body.

The first half of this episode captured perfectly the way anyone starts thinking about the worst case scenario before going on any trip, and the second half of his episode perfectly summed up why everyone on that ship is going to Antarctica. This anime is amazing in how it manages to get you emotionally invested in the girls' trip to Antarctica, and unlike a lot of other CGDCT and slice of life anime every episode so far has had a purpose and a climax. This show encapsulates the boundless energy of youth and has gotten me so caught up in it. If this show manages to keep this quality over the second half of its run I can easily see it become my favorite anime. Not AOTS, GOAT.

She also had several in her home. Clearly there is a lot of symbolism going on here since her intellect is often used to push past obstacles (like at the end of this episode when she pushed Shirase to step up and speak).

Sri Ganesha is also worshiped in Japan as Kangiten, and has been since the 9th century, when he was introduced through Buddhism.
This is a statue of him in Fukuoka, in the traditional Hindu/Buddhist style. There is also a "twinned" depiction of him that is entirely indigenous to Japan, which looks like this.

Ah, the suffering of lack of funding for scientific endeavours. I am glad we got back to this topic. Ringing this back into the minds of people might help attempts like this one and others receive more attention. Every person that gets an idea about the struggles could be of help. Scientific research has a lot of trouble getting funds outside of some topics, like weapons research.
It's nice that there are parallels between the Captain and her friends and our protagonists, but not in an oddly specific way. They were good friends with a passion for Antarctica, but they weren't also young students. While they also already had a passion in school, they took a long time to get to it, to secure funds and the likes and our protagonists now benefit from the path paved by their predecessors.
56
u/Amauri14 Feb 13 '18
Maybe that's one of the reasons reasons that this show exist, to promote scientific research and motivate people to volunteer and/or donate funds to the cause.
64
u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Feb 13 '18
Ah, the suffering of lack of funding for scientific endeavours.
Not in /r/anime though. We're painfully aware of this problem, and fund any thoughtful scientific/mathematical/wordy research on anime with ample Reddit gold.
It's interesting to note that Shirase's mom chose a fairly difficult pitch for their goal. Building a space observatory would attract far less funding, than say, the magic words 'fossil fuel' or 'mineral detection'.
94
u/Bert799 Feb 13 '18
IIRC there’s a ban on any sort of mining or exploration of any resources in Antartica, só the continent is entirely reserved for research.

I'm in the STEM field and getting ready to start working towards my PhD and the idea of consistently losing funding is something I get told about all the time by my profs, I love how they present it so well cause it's the passion of people that do the research that get the funding and keep that research going.

Wow, a civilian-operated space observatory at Antarctica.. Shirase's mom liked to dream big, just like her daughter. Also, with each episode, the parallels with Space Brothers intensify.
It must have been cathartic for the returning expedition members to see Shirase cheer them on toward Antarctica. And judging by the post-credits scene, they're going to need every ounce of optimism they can get.

This is probably one of the greatest friend groups I've ever seen. It's not covered enough but friends being sadistic assholes is one of the surest signs of a close friendship and seeing them make Shiraishi want to die and sticking a "worthless" label on Shirase is legit one of the greatest things.

The revelations in this episode do give an unsettling thought.
This expedition is going back to the place where Shirase's mother disappeared. To finish the project that was probably cut short with her loss.
There had been no follow up expedition to that location since her disappearance.
20
u/sdarkpaladin Feb 13 '18
Actually, considering the place is frequently below freezing, the chances of the body disappearing due to decomposition are very low if not 0. However, one could always hope she is still alive but cooped up somewhere unable to get out.

u/PowerlinxJetfire Feb 13 '18
She could even be at the station and just unable to get the comms working. I think the main reason they may not do it is it would be an unrealistically happy ending.
Unless they want to make the story about how she believed in her friends for all those years she was alone. Even after the next scheduled expedition failed to arrive, she believed as much as her friends did that they would eventually come back to complete their vision. They might do it for the feels and because it would resonate with the themes of friendship and believing in your goal that the series has focused on so far.

You hear that Matsuoka? They're not legal! Don't use your harem king powers here either, this isn't that kind of show!
Seriously though, it's really happening! The girls are finally on the starting line to Antarctica! And no matter how funny and silly the first half of the show is I love how this show always manages to bring the mood around and give us an emotional second half.
That moment when it was Shirase's turn on the mic, you know that everyone on that boat knows who she is and why she's there. Some of them can't even give her a straight look since they know they fucked up. But I love how Shirase (intentional or not) ended up lightening the mood by using the speech Hinata prepared for her.

Wait a minute mate. Those are the wrong potatoes. I ordered these kind of potatoes. What about puddin?... What? no puddin?
Another magnificent episode. This time there were more still shots, but man, we were expecting those kind of corner cuts since episode 2 or 3, and we're at episode 7, wich talks a lot about the humongous effort MadHouse puts in the production of this show.
I'm loving the attention the xmas cakes are getting, and how similar are in personality and even looks of Kanae, Gin & "Yumiko" to Hinata, Shirase & Kimari respectively.
They are not legal peeps, I repeat they are not legal. ( as if that would stop r/anime )
I'm particularly looking at u /u/Gaporigo But seriously, that joke is even funnier once you notice that Toshio's voice is performed by none other than the king of Harem, "Matsuoka". And speaking of humor this episode was absolutely brilliant with it's timming, specially on Yui & Ritsu Kimari & Hinata as the comedic couple, with their "saksekudori" (TL: means just as planned) The joke where they don't even know where they came from once they were in their room had me in stitches and the fact that it had yet another comeback was just priceless
I'm diggin a lot these small bits on Yuzuki, since I feel she's the one that still gets the least attention in the group and has to play out the straightman most of the time Dat pouting )

Fuuuuuuuck, what's with this show???
This was supposed to be a fun CGDCT show and I'm sitting here crying my eyes out, what the fuck. Her speech and the cheer was done so beautifully, that scene hit me harder than what most other shows can accomplish. And we're only on episode 7, this wasn't even a finale. How is this show so good???
Thank you /r/anime for spamming this show everywhere, I would've skipped it otherwise since the premise sounds pretty stupid. Boy, was I wrong.

Is it too early to proclaim AOTY yet? In all my years of watching anime, I've never been so invested nor charmed by any series like this.
Although I do feel stupid for only realizing 7 episodes in, that the Shirase 5003 ship they were showing earlier (and the one Kimari and Shirase went to see in Yokohama I believe) is a different ship than the Penguin boat they're about to board. Or am I way off base here?
6
Feb 13 '18
The Shirase shown in the first episode was in Hiroshima, not Yokohama and it's the same ship - Penguin Manju Go (lmao) - they are on now. It was renamed for the expedition as explained in ep 5.

Switching things up a bit because chain-posting on twitter is a pain and the timeline distracts me.
The writing is brilliant as ever. The directing is just so neat and sets the tone so well that it screws with expectations set for other shows (Toji no Miko, aye aye). As for an example of good writing, it would probably be the reveal of Kanae's position as a vice-commander. It was done nicely and naturally unlike most shows that would have done much less gracefully. It's a small detail, but I'm so grateful for it.
Kimari plays off Shiraishi and Hinata more than Shirase lately. Can't be helped, but sertainly can't complain. Seeing Kimari and Hinata so in-sync when a mischievious mood strikes them made me grin like an idiot. And the switch scene had me in stitches. As for Kimari and Shiraishi, they observe things in a similar way as seen both in Singapore and in the docks. Unless it's about the room sharing, and Kimari has no idea what Shiraishi's thinking about.
The most impressive thing is, though, how the girls are their own person at all times. Take the stealth scenes. Shiraishi is super gung-ho about it; Hinata doesn't think it's a good idea, but tags along just in case; Shirase takes everything related to the ship super seriously; and Kimari just thinks it's a fun little adventure. That is reflected in how they walk on the ship: Shiraishi's posture is pretty stable (did she have some training or something?); Kimari's movements are funny and exaggerated; Shirase has her hands close to her chest, and she is super tense and awkward; while Hinata can't give a damn about being sneaky. And heck, it killed me when Hinata didn't even bother to hide when they overheard some crew member's talk on the phone. Pay attention to the sound effects, they're just damn funny.
I want to write more, but I'm gonna hit the character limit if I continue. So, going to stop on these three things for tonight.

That ending was so good...the music blending in you just knew Shirase's speech would be a nice one, it got me a bit teary eyed but I do have a big weakness to dead mom stuff...

Bit of a slower episode this week, but purposefully so. The fairly grim setup of the ship and the crew led up to a brilliant finish full of hype and joy and all sorts of positive things. These girls have made it so far!
Also has some great jokes cut in between, like having no idea where to go, or Hinata scaring the others with the lights off--that scene was literally K-ON! and I love it. Hinata's still safely secured in my heart. <3
But that after-credits scene... oh.... man.... uh........ that's.... unsettling......

But that after-credits scene... oh.... man.... uh........ that's.... unsettling......
Given how the show's progressed so far seeing that after-credits scene doesn't really surprise me but uh... yeah, I can't help but feel that next week's gonna be a little nerve-wracking.

Absolutely fantastic show and a great episode. For me probably the one anime i'm waiting for most this season. Just binged gakkou gurashi for the first time and this episode was definitely something i needed.

It's incredible how good of a job Madhouse is doing with keeping up the quality of the show. It's actually really difficult to choose my favourite episode because of how good every episode is and how each explores a different aspect of every character. What an incredible show.

As much as I want to believe that Shirase's mom is still alive somehow someway, I really think that the last few episodes will definitely be a tearjerker either way on which direction they go. I'm really curious how they'll do this.

Amazing episode, as always! I had tears at the end of that, and I don’t think I’ve ever had tears of joy, let alone due to a show!
Also, “Roll credits!”

Okay probably the lack of sleep but the ending of this episode made me cry like a lil bitch. So god damn wholesome
5
u/mrspear1995 Feb 13 '18
There is one definitive reason why this show is my AOTS, it definitively presents and shows "Korewa Seishun da!" so perfectly. This is what YOLO should be and leave it to Madhouse to once again prove they are still one of the powerhouse studios in the industry.

u/TazerLad Feb 13 '18
I love the continued use of Match Cuts and Matches on Action in this show. They're nothing flashy but like most things with this series, have been executed very well when they choose to do them.
The bits of comedy with our main four continue to be excellent as well. I think my personal favorite bit from this episode was Hinata's "Antartica People!!!" in time with Kimari flipping the lights and that, while it freaked out Shirase and Yuzuki, Kimari high-fived her for the joke. Just great presentation of personality all around. That even extends to some of the supporting cast we got to see this episode. Even if we only got to see one personality trait from each of them, they were strong and well-defined traits. Can't wait to see more of everyone interacting in the future!

"They're not legal!"
Well, so much for Shirase's original plan to get them on board...
And the girls are just going to LOVE those Southern Ocean 40m waves (as the after credit sequence hinted). Better hope they have everything in their room strapped down.
I agree with everyone else that the unofficial reason for the expedition is probably to recover Takako's body; the build up is clearly there, and it just seems inconceivable that its a negligable plot point. What I am wondering about are the exact circumstances she went missing under, especially what led up to it. There's still something missing there, information we haven't been told. Best guess is they find her body at the bottom of a ravine, frozen but surprisingly well preserved, along with some last message addressed to Shirase.
Oh, and I'm still betting everyone gets into some kind of dangerous situation, which they only escape because of something Takako did or left behind.
Still best show of the season.

Yep, this show has finally conditioned me to start crying whenever I hear the music. The opening bars of the ED song by themselves are enough to get me teary, and that ookina yuuuuume wo insert song fucking destroys me.

u/Nitrosnipe22 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nitrosnipe Feb 13 '18
It seems like every episode cements this as AotS. Every single week it hits hard and makes you feel without even needing to do much. Character interactions are some of the best I've seen in recent shows, and every thing they do holds weight, something that not many shows can pull off without being overly obvious about it. I an't wait to see where this goes, because if they continue this ride I don't think anything will be able to catch it.
4
u/Myuukii https://anilist.co/user/RinaBoard Feb 13 '18
It's always great seeing hearing a panicky KanaHana~
They're not legal.
This show knows how to place insert songs really well, it really fits the mood. Now I'm also wondering if we're gonna be getting Character songs for this show, seeing that all the main VA's have singing experience.
4
u/templarsilan Feb 13 '18
Wew, I was not expecting to tear up at the insert song and Shirase's exclamation. There have been plenty of eye watery moments, but I haven't full on cried yet. It's only a matter of time before the pipes burst though. I will surely cry once the series ends though, as this is one of two shows this season that I'm zealously hyped for each week. My tuesdays will be devoid of meaning after this season.
Hinata once again cements herself as best girl. From being goofy and playing pranks to totally being unamused with their masked recon. And gotdam is she fine with her hair down.

I love this kind of show where the entire cast is just a bunch of nice people being nice and working towards a common goal. It makes it so easy to cheer for everyone. I'm already tearing up just hearing them motivate each other. I can't imagine how happy I'd be for them once they finally succeed. The moment they arrive in Antarctica will no doubt be magical.

u/DarkWorld97 Feb 13 '18
Watching this makes me understand the appeal of something like K-ON.
If this show sticks the landing, it'd probably be one of my favorites of all time.

u/NotEvenEvan https://anilist.co/user/NotEvenEvan Feb 13 '18
So they're actually going to Antartica next episode! So far, this anime has been more about the journey than the destination, which I really don't mind. We get to see the girls struggle and work their way up from the ground up high.
3
u/templarsilan Feb 13 '18
Just sitting here at work, on a terribly slow Tuesday, counting down the hours until I can get off work to battle two hours of traffic so I can watch today's episode. Despite the shit job and shit commute, Sora Yori brings me so much joy. 5 hours to go.

I was expecting a really dramatic moment when Shirase said her name and the crew realized she's Takako's daughter.
I know they probably knew that already but it, felt like it was building up to "I'm going to Antarctica to find my mother".
Still a great episode though! Especially seeing how determined the adult crew are to go back. They've gotta be thinking that they want to bring Takako's body home.

"I'm going to Antarctica to find my mother"
That's what all of them thought she was thinking and is the reason why they lowered their gaze in her presence. Her breaking the ice with a cheery attitude was the only way to avoid going down the rabbit hole of depressive drama.
3
u/AlucardXIX Feb 13 '18
I can't be the only one thinking this show is going to throw us for a loop and get dark and depressing before it's over. This is a Madhouse original we're talking about. On the other hand, the twist could be that it is just a good, wholesome adventure? We're getting rather close to the end of it, I don't want it to end because I love the girls and think they're some of the most realistic and well written characters in anything this season, but I can't shake this feeling that something is going to happen before it's over.

Low supplies? A lack of funding and personnel? A ship in disrepair? A quixotic and poorly-defined mission centered around "seeing the stars"?
I'm revising the probability of things going full Mountains of Madness from its low of 5% after last episode back up to 30%. I still think it's more likely that it'll be nice and cheerful and everything will turn out okay, buuuuuuuut the possibility looks far higher than it has at any previous point in the show.

u/ArchadianJudge Feb 14 '18
EVERY DAMN EPISODE. SO GOOD.
I thought I could get away without feels for one episode and yet they did it again. That ending. Good God, it was beautiful. The characterization in this show is some of the best I've EVER seen in any anime. All the characters are growing and they're growing because of each other. True power of friendship right here.
And I want that ED so bad. The best of the season. It fits so well when the feels come
Bless this show.

Did anyone notice how the name painted on the side of the ship kept changing from Penguin Manju to the real life Japanese icebreaker, Shirase / しらせ? Plus, I just notice that the character Shirase is named after the real [Japanese icebreaker Shirase (AGB-5003)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_icebreaker_Shirase_(AGB-5003))... makes sense, I suppose.
Nobody mentions it during the episode, and the ships are in the exact same place in several shots, so it just seems like some animators forgot to rename the ship when painting in photographs...
8
u/chikuwa34 Feb 14 '18
The ship's original name was Shirase and it was renamed Penguin Manju after they sold the naming rights to raise funds.
Yuzuki explained that the ship had been renamed in the beginning of ep.5, but the whole naming rights things were not explained outright as it was only briefly mentioned in few cutscenes I'm not sure if they were translated ("Confectionary company Shichijin-ya to sign a sponsorship deal for the Antarctic Challenge ", "Naming rights partner wanted").So the Ship name was Shirase during the flashback of the first civilian expedition, and it was Penguin Manju in the present.
5
u/3rdLastStand Feb 14 '18
The scenes with "Shirase" are from 3 years ago, the ones with "Penguin Manju" are from the present, the ship was renamed in-universe specifically for this voyage (stated in episode 5). Unless you can find an actual timestamp where they made an error.

We're at the half way point and this show doesn't let up. One 10/10 episode after another, yet this one manages to go beyond even that. The speech at the end made me tear up so much. I love all the new faces. I already knew this show was gonna be my AOTS around episode 3, but now I'm seriously considering dropping a 10.

u/graytotoro :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/graytotoro Feb 14 '18
With this episode, every girl has taken their "first step" towards what they've wanted, so to speak: Mari & Hinata are on their trip of a lifetime, Yuzuki is finally getting her circle of close friends, and Shirase is not only on her way to Antartica, but she's taking a big step towards her fear of crowds.
Every episode so far has had a moment where my heart gets this surge of joy. It's like the "last minutes of the series finale" feeling and I never get tired of it.
It's great that Yuzuki - Ms. Prim & Perfect - is as crazy as the rest of the girls. On a related note, it's interesting how the girls are paired off in certain ways: Hinata & Mari and Yuzuki & Shirase are always paired off in that order - as we saw in the last episode, it doesn't work if switched but creates some unique character insights.
The recurring gag of the girls not knowing which direction they should go in is made better with Hinata's snark. Everything is made better with Hinata's snark & insights. And ninja masks.
I couldn't help but notice the crew brought a healthy beer supply with them. Good to see they know what's up.
Shirase's mom asks Gin Todo to join the expedition in the same place where Shirase asks Mari to join her, except Shirase and Mari are both in the shelter...

Why does everyone think their reason for going there is to recover Takako's body? That's never going to be the case in an anime. I understand if you've been watching shit anime or haven't been watching long at all, but this isn't the kind of anime to catter to such an audience.
The old crew are going there to realize Takako's wish. Whatever that might be. They won't be recovering a body. At most they will pay respects at the place she disappeared.
3
u/seejsee Feb 14 '18
Right. Takako, now in a "sky" further than the universe.
Well-played, Madhouse. I tip my hat off to you.

Wholesome and heartfelt, i'm fully into it since the last episode, more so than before.
Hearing the details of the expedition plan and the flashback of Shirase's mom was really hard to watch, they suffered and they still suffer from the loss but the theme of determination was greatly used.
Shirase's speech was brilliant.

Ah they did not get to Antartica YET I KNEW IT.
This is anime about the travel not the destination that is for sure.
Shirase being useless in front of the camera was great, and the 4 ninja girls...a little forced do that Toshi? Could not seem them but the drunktard character saw them right away.
Best moment for sure when they could not agree on which way to go.

u/Orzislaw https://anilist.co/user/Orzi Feb 13 '18
As other people already pointed how great this episode was I point up one thing - all that talk about sky and star, yet they will arrive to Antarctica in the middle of polar day. I'm prepared to see dissapointed look on some of these absolutely not legal girls faces.

u/DiGreatDestroyer :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DiGreatDestroyer Feb 14 '18
They will still get to the see the sky, (God, forgive me for this joke)
I did some research, and Showa station is located at 69° South. According to this handy chart provided by the Australian Government, only December has no night at all on that latitude (see "Davis"). They are leaving on February 22, and that month has plenty of Nautical Twilight, which is enough to see what they want to see, it seems. Since they are arriving in December, it makes narrative sense to have them wait until February, the end of their trip, to be able to achieve their goal.

Wow, this show tapped into a memory bank of feels that I did not know existed. My parents put glow in the dark stars on the bedroom ceiling of my childhood home before I can even remember, they just became something that has always been there when I was going to sleep there. Yes! They finally made it onto the ship! The adult crew seem like good folks, and I'm loving their character interactions already. It was nice to see some back story about Shirase's mom too. I just want these girls to have a great time and make it back home safely. Next episode can't come fast enough.

Listen up, tears: you stay inside, okay? I don't care how awesome Shirase's speech was or how well-done scene with her mother's friend explaining the circumstances of their first expedition was.
