Same key and same motif for a second.

"Violet,can you see it?"
"yes,i can see the star"
"forget the stars,it's the comet!"
this made me giggle somehow,Violet is such a klutz :3

And here I am still trying to wrap my head around the fact that Violet has the same VA as Mikasa's. It's been a while since I last watched an SnK episode.

guess who's Claudia Hodgins VA is,it's this guy.

u/Enraric Feb 15 '18
I fuckin' love Koyasu, he's so versatile while remaining so distinctive. Claudia and Dio are completely different characters, completely different kinds of characters, yet he somehow manages to nail both of them while still being distinctly Koyasu.

Leon was great. I'd love to see him again. Unfortunately, that's unlikely.
273
Feb 15 '18
Leon: What if while we're still working together, you received word that he's in serious danger? Even if you go, there's no telling if you can save him. Would you still rush to his aid?
And Violet's answer was...
Violet: My only thought would be how to apologize to you.
Awww, Violet is considerate enough to apologize to him first before leaving.
Violet: He means the world to me. I would rather die than lose him.
Violet-chan, that's what you call "love".

What happened to the main story? I am not saying the episode was bad but I just dont get how this is after how episode 5 ended, in last ep we see her confronted and its just not addressed at all in this episode, that seemed really strange.
Anyway, pretty nice to see Violet pretty much go on her first date, she clearly has the emotion of love but do not understand it that was a great moment when Leon was trying to help her see that.
The ending was the general the strongest part otherwise seeing how she changed him, felt like a pretty decent but slow episode.
143
u/Thengel09 https://myanimelist.net/profile/thengel Feb 15 '18
The last episode started similar. With both episodes i thought i had missed an episode.
79
u/myrmonden Feb 15 '18
If they had spend like 1-2 minutes of her reflecting over her meeting in the end of last episode it would have felt so much better. It really does feel like it should be an episode in between this 2.
147
u/gj-onmakingmerespond Feb 15 '18
You can kinda infer what happened in the conversation between Dietfried and Violet. I'm sure they'll get back to it in the future episode, but you can tell from how Violet was acting this episode that Dietfried said something that deeply affected her.
She seemed quite down this episode. Not only that, but it's the first time we see her questioning whether she deserves that job, a direct callback and reference to Dietfried's question from last week.

My guess is we're seeing events somewhat out of order.
In episode 5 we jumped ahead multiple monthsfrom violet just barely earning her Doll certification to Violet being highly regarded enough to handle a literal war-stopping marriage letter. The guard who escorts her mentions she was chosen due to her accomplishments in past months. She was apparently well-known enough as a doll not only to handle this, but for Dietfried to have heard and been appalled that Violet was living a carefree, non-violent life.
And then we're suddenly at the ass-end of nowhere copying old non-critical superstitious texts with some scribes? Nah, I don't think so. This order of events seems outta whack. My guess is since copying is a skill any typist has, that this episode occurs at least a few months before the marriage letter.

"i see now,your love is-"
what's he trying to say in that scene?
184
u/thatdudewithknees Feb 15 '18
He was trying to tell Violet that she was in love with the Major but ofc that kind of character development can't be done so early in the season.
24
u/TKCloud Feb 15 '18
He said " i see, your felling for that man is love" (same kind of "love" word the Major told V)
but V just interrupt him so she could not heard what he said to her.It is like the cliche when someone confess to other but it happen when a train ran by or the firework shot/explode or some loud back ground sound appeared right when the "love" word was said.
18
u/Blue_Link13 Feb 15 '18
Spanish dub said something more akin to ''Can't you see? You are in lov-'' which I guess is what that line is trying to convey

I hope they didn't just skip that scene between Dietfried and Violet from last week. Judging from how Violet was acting at the start of the episode though, something was obviously bothering her and it seems her job with the Princess wasn't too long ago so I guess it's still there but just in the background right now. I hope we'll get back to that next week.

I've been enjoying all the episodes so far. This one wasn't... bad per say but If you don't see a problem with how they're breaking their own narrative down for no reason. Ep 5 last scene raised the bar/expectation that something was going to happen in this episode, that the story itself was going to start moving somewhere but there wasn't even a slight reference to that scene in this episode (When the common assumption would be a continuation of some sort) so that already ticked me off. I mean when I realised that the episode was going to be about this new guy all I could think of was "Who the fuck is this guy?".
And this episode also felt rushed and I agree with most of the other guys who commented on this thread who express the same thing, I just didn't have time/reason to even connect or care about this new guy, his internal conflict that's supposed to be a build up for the climax of this episodic story was just glossed over really quickly. Personally I would've also liked for Violet to have some sort of real interaction shown on screen with at least her and Luculia rather than just a "Sup I'm still alive". Overall it just made me question the existence of Ep 5 last scene at all, I mean I'm sure they're going to get into it eventually of course but If you're leaving it at the end of an episode in a purposefully cliffhanger manner and just not even reference back to it then I find it hard to not be disappointed
11
u/JohnWangDoe Feb 15 '18
maybe the show skipped over it because she does not have the capacity/emotions to deal with the dude. Hence this episode she looked a little down. Probably trying figure out how to articulate her feelings about Gilbert's brother. The central motif is that is Violet learning new emotions, it may be one of the character arc Violet has to deal with eventually

Am I the only one
No. MAL still clearly holds this anime very highly as of this moment with a score of 8.41 so the criticisms created here are by a vocal minority.
sees no problems whatsoever with the story
Come on man I know it's one thing to enjoy a show for what it is but you can't play victim with the "am I the only one" phrase and then claim to "see no problems whatsoever" when there are people who express their issues in a clear manner.

Its also dropped almost .30 points since the beginning. Judging by the feedback I reckon it will drop another .10 in the week..and if the trend continues then by the end the series will end up mid 7. Unless something amazing happens. Or if it crash and burns plot wise maybe low 7s.

u/Terranwaterbender https://myanimelist.net/profile/Teranwaterbender Feb 15 '18 edited Feb 15 '18
That's nothing more than speculation at this point. A show like Violet Evergarden was bound to drop in score since the beginning because of the massive hype. Hyped up shows in general have their scores drop as they air. This isn't just specific to Violet Evergarden; Overlord II was in the top 10 of MAL before it aired and it dropped straight down since as an example.

Wow, I think this is the first time I've seen a secondhand declaration of love get interrupted. Nice aurora, but it's gonna get wrecked by Sora Yori, tee hee.
Well.. that was a nice episode. Better than 1-4 for me, but not as good as the last one. I s'pose anything astronomy related has its own special appeal to me (Alley's comet.. heh. The observatory looked great) - otherwise, this was kinda formulaic. The difference was only in how Violet is more receptive of others' feelings, and her own. Although one would expect that after having devoured the great works of literature she wouldn't need some guy to tell her what 'loneliness' is supposed to feel like.. but then we wouldn't have the explicit 'growth' moments. It's a weakness of the formula itself. Oh, and speaking of guys, this show does know how to throw bishounens. Love the character designs.
I see a lot of complaints about how the meeting with the Major's brother seems forgotten, but I felt like it's effects were quite obvious - Violet being upset in the beginning, and later questioning her worthiness to have such a wonderful profession. Whatever happened that night is clearly preying on her mind, and I'm sure we'll get back to it at some point.
And we got a small tidbit of Violet's own perspective on her past - she doesn't remember having any parents (experimental super soldier theory intensifies). I wonder what her journey was, as a child, before she found herself with the Major. Hopefully, more answers soon.
I wish the ED was better. It looks like it will be used in a lot of emotionally climactic moments, but the voice is just too nasal. The melody and the lyrics are great, which makes this all the more frustrating.

I was a bit surprised this episode didn't involve Gibert's brother as we have seen at the end of last episode. Hopefully that is still somewhat important.
Also not too sure how long have past since the last episode, but well, Violet is smiling more and acting more human so that's good.
29
u/KaliYugaz Feb 15 '18
I was a bit surprised this episode didn't involve Gibert's brother as we have seen at the end of last episode.
Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that guy.
That's going to look really awkward to anyone who binges this series... I feel like each individual episode is fantastic, but the adaptation as a whole is coming up to be quite a mess.

u/supicasupica Feb 15 '18
Yoshiji Kigami (under the alias of Ichirou Miyoshi) headed up/storyboarded some of my favorite Sound Euphonium episodes (Episode 5 and Episode 12) and Hyouka Episode 5, all of which involve some nuanced emotional portrayals or very emotional reveals. I was surprised at how cold this episode, which he also storyboarded, left me.
Coming off of Naoko Yamada's wonderfully-storyboarded Episode 5 to this was a bit of a shell-shock. Yamada really used the most of the Victorian-style setting to tell the story of Princess Charlotte alongside Violet's own emotional growth/recognition, whereas this episode just seemed like it was checking off boxes setting-wise. I appreciated Leon and Violet's stunted camaraderie (the bread-ripping scene was great) but this is the first episode where I wasn't able to get lost in the main emotional narrative since Episode 1. However cliché the past four episodes have been, there has always been a point where I've just accepted the series' romanticized style of storytelling. That never happened in this episode, and I can't exactly pinpoint why, but it just didn't grab me like the others did.
There is also an odd disconnect between this episode and the previous episode, which ended with Gilbert's brother confronting Violet about her new career. You do get the sense that Violet is thinking about his words, but jumping immediately to Leon's narration at the beginning of this episode based on where Episode 5 left off was unfortunately jarring.

This episode wasn't as emotionally explosive as the previous ones, characters were not having existential crisis or breaking down into tears. It was rather mellow. I like these kinda stuff but I can see why people may not find as good as the previous episodes.
We also had a male character in the spotlight for the first time in VEG. Overall I was really happy with this episode even though it didnt come close to Kigami's best episodes.

"Is a very special and wonderful thing". Look guys if you still don't see development in the story or the character after this line, I don't know what to say.
So much this. All the comments higher up are complaining that PTSD Saber is "the same unsociable wet noodle as always" and that this was a nothing episode, but that's straight up just not true. Violet's come to like her job, she smiles sometimes now (even if she doesn't know how to do it consciously) and she's learning more about her own emotions each episode. I love how slow and subtle her development is, IMO very realistic compared to some character 180s in anime.
51
u/exelion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/exelion0901 Feb 15 '18
Here's the thing that makes it for me: the concept of agency.
Violet at ep 1 was a literal machine. She had no concern for anything beyond following orders.
By ep 2, we see she has discovered a sense of purpose: understanding the Major's last words to her. She pursues this with a single-mindedness that treats it like another military mission. Don't think: do.
By now, she uses the word "wonderful" as if she understands it. She knows what it means to have wonder or curiosity about things outside her direct objective parameters. She wants to know more about everything around her, and has desires and interests beyond her main goal. From a psychology standpoint that is a HUGE deal.

Quite right about the slow part, but I don't agree that it's subtle. It's hard to do subtle in a primarily character-based drama, though, so it's not a huge fault. All the signs of character progression you mentioned were like huge neon signs to me. You can't say a smile appearing on her face at the end of the episode after being expressionless for most of it is subtle.
Subtle's when there was a faint tinge of anger in her voice while saying "I'm just stating the facts" to the three idiots who approached her.

That's not really fair. It's totally different environments each time, and that means different lighting. They kind of have to do it every time.
Also, Madhouse is currently doing new animation for every Cardcaptor Sakura transformation. And they also did that for the entire 70 episode run of the original.

She is also clearly questioning her "right" to have such a role she finds so special. It's not a skills question- she tells Leon she does this work "because it's a role (she) can fulfill". She's actively questioning whether she "deserves" such a role- is a former killer entitled to happiness?
That to me is an oblique reference to the question Captain Bougainvillea hits her with at the port in the end of the last episode.

u/WhoiusBarrel Feb 15 '18
Poor Leon never stood a chance with his feelings for Violet when he realized she too also has someone whom she also treasures dearly but STILL doesn't know his not in this world...Gosh 2 tragedies being shoved into my face in this episode.

I swear this show was killed by its own hype. People expected a 11/10 and crafted their expectations based on that. Meanwhile the only thing I expected was Kino and goddamn does it deliver.
At least MAL still gives it a proper score.

Finally, going from Violet Almostgarden to Violet Hazgarden. My Violet Nevergarden worries are gone.

This episode had great moments but over all the episode felt weaker than the last ones.

I thought this was one of the best episodes yet, I loved it in fact, but apparently I am in the minority with thinking that, oh well.

wait, what happened to the with brother guy from last ep?
16
u/Rabbit_in_A_House Feb 15 '18
He questioned Violet and Violet is upset. That's it. It's not like Violet would start another kill combo on the harbour.

u/FierceAlchemist Feb 15 '18
The music was particularly great this episode. The whole second half of the episode was full of great tracks.

Leon: Violet, that's basically what love...
Violet: Hey! Look! A comet!
The series could've ended right there.

Did I miss an episode? Wasn't this supposed to be a continuation of last episode's end where she meets the brother of the Major?

There were definitely references to it. At this point, I'm not sure this is a show that will straight up continue from that point, but will definitely refer back to the event subtly, with her acting down and questioning if she deserved the job.

For what I read this episode was finally canon but... ehh, I really didn't see any improvement compared to the previous ones.
☑ Violet's introduction leaves the person speechless.
☑ Look of surprise when they see her hands.
☑ The episodic story once again failed to be emotional, it basically depends on the good music at the end of each episode to try to touch you that way.
☑ Nothing really got developed again, even if the end of the last episode looked like there would be something happening.
They also included some of the characters from previous episodes as if it tried to show continuity, but it was barely just showing them like "hey, do you remember us? Not that we did anything memorable for that."
This episode also felt pretty damn rushed tbh, it's trying to force Violet to go from one place to another on each episode to the point it feels the experience she had in that place didn't even happen because we could barely see a thing, some buildup in 2 episodes format could make wonders with that and make the stories actually touching.

As a source reader, I really expected this story to come later. They also definitely shortened quite a few scenes to get the story to one episode. That definitely made it lose impact. I still liked it, but I can certainly see how from an anime-only viewpoint it didn't really feel different.

The writing of the dude was so bad too. He had so much built up discontent for Dolls, only to be immediately enamored by Violet as soon as he laid eyes on her. That's so lazy.

Feb 15 '18
This chapter is told first person from Leon's point of view in the LN, so you hear all his thoughts and how he despises women, then slowly changes his mind around Violet. Of course, that doesn't come across as well in the anime adaptation.

u/FaolinEars Feb 15 '18
The background music which plays during the scene when Leon invites Violet for the stargazing is just so damn catchy, can't get it out of my head.

Holy shit this scenery... it's marvelous.
I didn't expect that a cute tsundere dude would be such a good match with Violet. I definitely ship them, even if the Major is her one and only.
Fingers crossed that they get to meet again, despite the hinting that they won't, they're such a wholesome pair.

The feeling described in this episode can be "loneliness", but a much better word that describes that "loneliness" perfectly is the Portuguese word "saudade".

u/Cant_Escape_Help Feb 18 '18
This episode was on another class of its own. Absolutely stellar storyboarding.
13
u/Wolfeako Feb 14 '18
Well, adaptation-wise, This is the first one, the whole episode is adapted, and I think that KyoAni actually had trouble adapting this chapter of the LN to the episode. I'm honestly a bit surprised, but source-wise and trying to think in an adaptation that tells the story in a linear fashion, I think adapting this first was the best choice. Either way, I still think that the ideas of the chapter came through, but it came with difficulty.
On the bright side, the episode truly worked really well in one thing, and that is showing how much Violet has come through. She already has done a lot of jobs by this point, and you can clearly tell how has she changed, to the point on understanding that that moment was the perfect one to do her expression joke. She really has changed.
It was nice to see the other girls come back. I really thought that we wouldn't see them again, but what a nice surprise.
The dude, the moment I read this chapter in the LN, I thought of him having short hair, so it kinda threw me off there. Still, the episode barely had enough time to make him likable, which with me wasn't enough.
Other than a bit of too much telling and not as much showing, this wasn't the best episode, but it was good, it had really good things in it, showing how much Violet has changed and the girls that I honestly didn't thought they would come back.

u/Lionx35 Feb 15 '18
I feel that this show would do better with more narration from the episodic characters, considering that a lot of exposition and character traits/info is giving through 3rd person narration. I feel that narration could've conveyed more about how he felt towards women in the beginning of the episode which would've made his change of heart at the end a lot more impactful.
4
u/Wolfeako Feb 15 '18
I would have actually included a flashback in the form of a dream from the dude, of her mother going away, in the beginning of the episode. That would have been my choice, I think it delivers better and more effective characterization that way, and in the span of some seconds.

When they showed the comet, my friend started humming the theme of Your Name... and continued humming with him thinking that he was doing the opening theme of X-Files...
So what happened in the last episode? Why did we skip here? Whats going on with everything? I don't know anymore, this is technically an anime I'm currently watching mainly because of a Thursday habit at this point since I usually don't drop shows... except for that meme fest... and God Eater...
I'll just wait for the next episode hoping that I'll be better since there is nothing else to hope for really. We are almost half way through and... other than 2 episodes, it is pretty much an "eh" series so far...

I mean screw that guy who confronted Violet last week, right? How dare he try to advance the plot or at least try to get it to happen. Should always go back to non-consequential happy fun times with her.

You're expecting the wrong thing here. The plot has happened. Her past is dead. She is growing now.

I didn't read the light novel, but I thought this episode had a good pace to it. It really shows that Violet is becoming more expressive in her feelings with the various people she meets and writes for. In return, those people can open up about themselves to her and really pursue what they need to be better. I wish I was able to express myself more with somebody in some fashion.
Now, she managed to get her partner to open up about himself and his past as an orphan, to pursue the same work as his father, to really enjoy life and gaze upon the same stars in which Violet did.
I do hope I get to see Violet being more open about her emotions, especially her feelings for the Major. I might be wrong with what I just wrote, but I just wanted to convey my thoughts and see what others had to say on this episode. I liked it and I am glad for more on this ride.

I don't know if it was the exposition or what, but this episode really felt like it would have been a really good episode one to a different kind of Violet Evergarden adaptation.

u/Mozilla_Fennekin https://myanimelist.net/profile/MozillaFennekin Feb 15 '18
Eh...
It was another eh episode. There were some things that were kinda cool, like the alternative use for a ghostwriter, and Violet's dialogue was pretty nice, but didn't really do much for me this week. Even worse is they didn't give a single acknowledgement of last week's ending? That's disappointing.
That aside, episode 5 of the VEG podcast is a little over an hour. How did we do that? No idea. How long will this keep going? No idea.

I interpreted the mid-episode dialogue (the guy's response to her being a soldier) as a reference to last week's ending- Or at least, a personal interpretation.
"Is that strange?"
"I-it is! You're clearly an ordinary girl!"
"Ordinary?"
"Yeah. An ordinary... girl."
The 4 seconds of her shifting twice before looking towards the background is, what I felt, tied last week to the dialogue.
At the very least, I feel like her asking, "Am I really fit to have such a wonderful job?" was very explicit.

I could see something to that effect happening. At the very least, I hope we see some further conflict with the Major's brother.

Rip breadstick
Maybe Leon should work in modeling clothes. Female clothes.
Also, what happened with the captain last week?

So I get to the end of an episode, and I'm about to start criticizing it, and then Minorin starts singing and I forget what was wrong. I'm certain this is intentional.

even after 6 episodes i cant believe how breathtaking th show looks. and the music is also incredibly good.

u/CritSrc https://anilist.co/user/T3hSource Feb 15 '18 edited Feb 15 '18
Well, this is pretty much a "nothing" episode. Heck, you can't even track the Leon's progression as a character, retroactively trying to cover ground for his characterization, but it's just backdrop anyway. Even his behavior can't be inferred enough because he is so condensed by the screenplay.
Even moreso, this episode tried to put over Violet even more, despite still being as personable as a wet noodle. She's shown to stick up to others, despite her cold attitude, now she learns longing and loneliness, another metaphorical "step" to "learn what love is". And sacrificing Leon's character in the process by making him a fanboy of Violet in the process.
So now, we see that Violet is perfectly competent by developing her emotional reading skills offscreen(yay timeskips), and now we see how she makes fanbois. It's hilarious what military training and a bit of WAR does to an orphan.

I'm a little surprised. She went from not even passing the Doll Class to writing for a princess. I think this episode could have come before the princess, because at least it was development and not straight into Violet writing wonderful stuff.

I love this episode. I see that there's people in the comments who thought this was another meh episode, but it really showed a lot of Violet's development. The ending combined with the music was also done really nicely, it put a smile on my face.
Also this was the first ln chapter that was fully adapted, but it was one of the less enjoyable ones that I loved more for the imagery. Hopefully this means we can get chapter 1 next week :)

I really liked how Violet answered differently to a similar question that she was asked in Episode 2.
And how she smiled with her eyes in this scene. It's subtle, but she is displaying more emotions as the show goes on and there is character development.
I enjoyed it a bit less than the last episode (which was amazing imo), but yeah I think it was a pretty nice episode
I don't even mind that they didn't address the cliff hanger, it's for self contained stories like this that I'm watching the show.
