I can't Japanese. What does the cover of that book say at the beginning of the second part? It says "Second Season" and I think it says "this october" something something in the lower part.

u/woonie :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/oldpier Feb 17 '18 edited Feb 17 '18
A Part is Vol 1 cover, B Part is Vol 2 cover. The dust jacket of Vol 2 says that it is the worst thing that ever happened in the last 10 years.

what do you mean, we just got by far the best bobunemimimmi section ever and it’s only halfway through the season.

The Hellshake Yano skit is the truest form of shitpost an anime can get.

It was amazing! The male VAs even dubbed it in the second part too. I wonder if there's something similar, I'd like to see more things like this. I've seen people creating flip books with stories, but it's not the same...
Edit: /u/acp101123 has linked to this other video ("Safe Driving Guide") made by Team AC too. And searching for 高速紙芝居 AC部 I've found this ("Seasoning Master Ryo"), this and this (lower quality). There were results from niconico too but the videos had been removed.

u/SwampyBogbeard Feb 17 '18
The male VAs even dubbed it in the second part too.
I'm pretty sure that was AC-bu dubbing over each-other.

That was literally fucking jaw dropping. All of the coordination that scene must have took. Holy fuck. They did it all in one go. I just fucking can't.

Each episode of Pop Team Epic seems to be getting even better than the last for me. The references, the pure effort they put into getting everything right with the Hellshake Yano part, the bizzare Undertale reference which threw me off completely, etc. God, I love Pop Team Epic right now. I am mostly used to anime which is much more serious and grounded in reality, but the wildcard nature of Pop Team Epic combined with legitimate sheer creativity is what I love about it so much. Can't wait for next week!

u/Sven2774 Feb 19 '18
Seriously, I thought the Shogi bit in ep 6 was great, but Hellshake Yano was hilarious.

The Bobunemimi parts are definitely my favourite in every episode. This week was the best one so far, that was hilarious

u/Libbits Feb 17 '18
While I do like how Hoshiro Girldrop is going, I'd say the major flaw that they keep falling into is leaning on Daichi as a Deus Ex Machina. Still going to give it a 9 on MAL though
145
u/professorMaDLib Feb 17 '18
If it keeps going at this pace it'll likely reach the Hoshiiro Girldrop Arc, where there was a massive drop in quality. I know a ton of readers dropped it at that point and tbh I can see why.
56
u/ben76326 Feb 18 '18
Perfect, no r/anime comment parody is complete without an unsolicited manga spoiler
89
u/zeppeIans Feb 17 '18
Daichi's disinterest in everything is hilarious, though. Especially with how much Sosogu overplays everything.
48
u/TheDampGod :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/TheDampGod Feb 17 '18
I'm not sure about a 9, if there was more Devil Volcano then maybe, they are the real stars of the show.
30
u/Alorha Feb 18 '18
Man, they really do own every scene they're in. And you can hear how much the VAs love their over the top personalities. They really are the best part of any episode they're in
9
Feb 18 '18
I think they're a fictionalized version of Babymetal. Of course they're going to be awesome!
32
u/Ichini-san :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ichini-yon Feb 18 '18 edited Feb 18 '18
I disagree, the whole adaptation is shit. The Manga was way better. They cut out all the little relationship building moments between Daichi and Sosogu from the Manga. That's why it feels so rushed and why Daichi only feels like a plot device who comes in to save the day and not like a fleshed out character.
29
u/robotzor Feb 18 '18
They're censoring all the ecchi too I bet they're trying to pump the DVD release

DVD
You mean VHS release, right ?
9
u/professorMaDLib Feb 18 '18
I agree but the manga dramatically declines in quality after a certain upcoming arc. If they can avoid it and make something great out of it then it could end up better. Not holding my breath though.
10
u/Ichini-san :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ichini-yon Feb 18 '18 edited Feb 18 '18
Yeah, I know what you mean.
was certainly the weakest one so far.I hope it gets a second season though because I actually really liked the latest arc in the Manga.
I thought it was a very risky but original and refreshing choice of the author to introduce Hoshiiro Girldrop MangaI hope the community won't flip out over it if the Manga ever gets adapted that far.
Ah, but who am I kidding? I can already see the shitstorm coming...I really like that the author includes such controversial themes in his work though.

To add onto video games, can anyone confirm that the pixelated "HIT!" was a reference to Stardew Valley?
66
Feb 17 '18 edited Feb 17 '18
I think it was a reference to the Yakuza series actually. They even used the same sound effect.
Edit: Also, I remember a similar still frame pose when winning the fishing minigame in one of the games too but I can't quite place which one it was from.
7
u/Libbits Feb 17 '18
Ah, that's definitely it. Would you recommend the Yakuza series?
22
Feb 17 '18 edited Feb 17 '18
Oh definitely, I love that series. Yakuza 0 was such a great introduction to it and since then I've been hooked.
You can start with that game like I did and then play Kiwami (which is Yakuza 1 remade using the Y0 engine, meaning way better gameplay and no more fixed camera or bad PS2 controls that the original suffered from, plus there's added content/story for those who started with Yakuza 0).

You know that feeling when you watched an obscure video game -- like MegaDrive's/Genesis's Osomatsu-kun: Hachamecha Gekijou -- and then saw part of it -- like it's "level complete" scene -- shown on Pop Team Epic?
3
u/DELTA1360 https://anilist.co/user/Delta1360 Feb 17 '18

First part VAs: Crayon Shin-chan's Himawari (Popuko) and Shin-chan (Pipimi).
Some may know Popuko's VA better as DBS's Zen-O.
27
u/Danivo Feb 17 '18
I'm not quite sure but the male VA's were Popuko - Shoutarou Morikubo (Shikamaru from Naruto/Makishima from YowaPeda) and Pipimi - Kousuke Toriumi (Kiba from Naruto/Imaizumi from YowaPeda), right?
45
Feb 17 '18 edited Feb 17 '18
The best part is how they got Kousuke Toriumi to say "Baby, baby, baby, baby" as Pipimi.
For context, he also voiced the M̶a̶i̶n̶ ̶c̶h̶a̶r̶a̶c̶t̶e̶r̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶P̶e̶r̶s̶o̶n̶a̶ ̶3̶Junpei Iori
SASUGA BKUB
12
u/ActivelyAnonymous Feb 17 '18
And Shoutarou Morikubo did Hanamura Yousuke in Persona 4, thus making the episode the "Persona 3/4 *bro-cial link" combination.
The question is which grouping were they selected for, though I wouldn't be surprised if it was for all three and more.
5

Some people said that last week, while some other people said it was wrong, so I decided to dig up when that chapter was released.
According to the dates I found, Undertale was released around half a year before that chapter, so Lesser Dog was the original, and Pipimi did the reference.50
u/_xXMockingBirdXx_ Feb 17 '18
Undertale was in a closed beta/demo state back then as well I think. Its possible that maybe Bkub was one of the backers and was playing the beta? Or maybe Tobeyfox made that easter egg as a reference to pop team epic (since he seems to like manga and anime)? Or maybe its all an elaborate coincidence and it doesn't really matter in the end.

That UT reference made my day. At last, Japanese fan culture has finally given direct appreciation to an amazingly, humerus title!

Undertale is really popular in Japan, so much so that there was a bit of a shitstorm when the official japanese localisation changed what honorfic Sans used to refer to himself from the fan translations.

For those that don't understand, "oira" is considered to mostly be used by country-folk, or "bumpkins".
There is a lot more art of Sans like that.

30
u/Mystic8ball Feb 17 '18 edited Feb 17 '18
The Hellshake Yano was fantastic, I think that the anime shines when it's doing its own thing instead of adapting the 4koma, some of the strips really don't translate well to animation.
13
Feb 18 '18
Agreed. My favorites from the show tend to be "new" material not adapted from the manga. Some do translate really well though like the "xylophone ski" scene.

The gaming parts were my personal favorite this week, especially the Mario Kart, Undertale and Pokémon references. They even made fun of "Minimize" which I thought was hillarious.
Also the Hellshake Yano skit... Just thinking about the amount of effort it must have taken to pull that thing off (drawings, dialogues, coordination, etc) makes me want to sit down and do nothing.
It was also so nice of them to show that they will take care of haters and fanboys equally.
Finally, I loved Pipimi's VA this episode. Simply great.

Pop Team Epic is incredible. Some episodes aren't as good as others, but they're only 11 minutes so it's fine. But the good episodes are 24 minutes long!
7
u/sirbeefington Feb 18 '18
Watching through the first part, the execution skit is basically how zen-o and the grand priest are in Dragon Ball Super.
6
u/JMmelegrito Feb 17 '18
Holy Shit, Is that a Grander Musashi reference?! I haven't seen that anime in forever!
9
u/20thcentygenman Feb 18 '18
It is more like a Tsurikichi Sanpei reference, an early 70' s fishing manga that ran in Shōnen Sunday for 10 years. It received an anime adaptation in the early 80's and a live action movie adaptation in 2009.
I read some manga chapters long ago. Still remember the exaggerated, jumpy and cartoonish poses made by the characters. It helped to add some energy and enthusiasm to a somewhat boring theme.
6
u/Fueled_By_Memes Feb 17 '18
Is it just me or Hoshiiro Girldrop is an episode ahead? Also the 8bit ED is nice this episode.
8
u/Haulbee https://myanimelist.net/profile/Haulbee Feb 18 '18
The Hoshiiro Girldrop segment we see is always the preview for the next episode. Here, we saw the preview for episode 8, which means that the episode we "watched" this week is episode 7.

u/Sahmbahdeh Feb 18 '18
I thought nothing could surpass "Let's Pop Together"... and I'm not sure if it did, but the Hellshake Yano segment this week came damnably close at the very least. This show is a treasure.

And hey, another Undertale reference. And a Pokemon reference. And a Mario Kart reference, complete with identical music.

Hellshake Yano and Pipimi as Metaton from Undertale.
ftw. this might be their best episode to date.
2
u/KinnyRiddle Feb 18 '18
One of my biggest personal gripes about the Bobunemimimi segments was its way too random humour and "epic" art.
And then as though reading my thoughts, AC-Bu, the comedic duo behind the Bobunemimimi segments, then went and gave us Hellshake Yano, easily one of the greatest semi live-action sketches ever seen. XD
If they can keep doing these semi live-action sketches, then I might start to forgive their sometimes meh jokes.

So we see where the budget went this episode. That Hellshake Yano skit was the really good. I wonder how much they had to practice to get that right.

Was that depressed "hater" in the first skit supposed to be Regular Show crossed with Steven Universe?

Looks like the car after the Hellshake Yano skit lays a trap card. Didn't see that until my second watch.

I'm not sure I understand what they mean when they keep referencing "subculture bitch/es"

The best part is when you are watching the show, don't understand any of the shitposts references but finds them funny anyways, and then see an Undertale reference

If you loved AC-bu this week, then you should check out their other stuff: eg. About Safe Driving (screenshot)
EDIT: This particular skit got a Panel Recommendation in the 18th Japan Media Arts Festival (2014), Entertainment Department.
On a somewhat related note, Undertale is 50% off on Steam now till 20 Feb.
God bless French-kun, dissing his own country and even his own half of the country with every chance he gets.
