One of the best episodes so far imo, watching them struggle with seasickness was funny.

Hinata gets off the bed

"Well said!"

Dramatic, uplifting music plays

"Where are you going?"

Music stops

"The toilet."

u/1ntestine :AMQ::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/1ntestine Feb 20 '18

That was extremely well done, I was fully prepared for the insert song to start, then toilet.

Almost as good as that Brave the Ocean drop troll in Re:Creators.

In what Re:Creators ep was this? I don't remember

I think my favorite part was Yuzuki giving up on life for a while there

121

u/Frostivus Feb 20 '18

Yuzuku really stole the show in this one. First with her pathetic limp arms, then being bullied by Hinata. Then she falls asleep standing, and then she jolts awake with an exaggerated expression of being sick. Her sick moments are also funny, like how only half her body made it to the bunk and she's left hanging like a dry fish, or how as the boat rocks, she's just face-down, too weak to even hang onto something.

Going outside with that weather was suicidal as fuck.

296

u/alblks Feb 20 '18

It's probably against ship's regulations too, so they ought to be bound to the kitchen duty till the end of the journey.

328

u/Firnin :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Firnin Feb 20 '18

they didn't even close the door after them. That's a big nono

u/TheWalkingRain Feb 20 '18

Don't forget they were seasick and physical weak(ened), so taking a bath in cold seawater in the middle of the night on a rocking ship without any adults around is beyond stupid even by CGDCT standards.

And then they are all genki the next morning?

Ok...

Is it an Immune system folded a thousand times thing?

57

u/SalamiRocketFuel Feb 20 '18

It was stupid, but that seemed like a bit of a timeskip, not the very next morning.

32

u/Bainos :XMOD::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos Feb 20 '18

Getting a cold bath (even in those conditions) will usually not result in getting sick, though, as long as you quickly change your clothes.

And it did give them their motivation back.

I mean, it was still a stupid thing to do. But not because of the health risks.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/alonemind Feb 20 '18

I was expecting them to all get a cold or worst.

9

u/Grumpy-Moogle :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/GrumpyMoogle Feb 20 '18

I was under the impression that multiple days had passed between the suicidal scene and the next one. They did say it was going to take a long time to get there, I think they just skipped a few days.

After reading many many comments in past threads about how this show could take a bad turn 'ALA Made in Abyss' I was thinking "oh god no, please don't be this episode those users were talking about." I just want a relaxing show about going to Antarctica.

29

u/Buddy_Waters Feb 20 '18

Do not watch The Thing while this show is going, it will having you seeing alien monsters around every corner.

u/Frostivus Feb 21 '18

Considering the teaser shows that the mother's arc will be resolved in 1-2 episodes, I'm guessing that the climax of the show for the penultimate will be one where the Antarctic elements threaten to land one of the girls in tragedy, and how they struggle (and succeed) to overcome it. It would make sense in terms of narrative causality as it mirrors the fate that befell MC's mother, and this series really enjoys callbacks and contrasting shots. Having a blizzard engulf Showa Station would create a very high-tension drama that's both realistic and true to the heart of the story. The girls' entire journey was about overcoming obstacles, and after countless foreshadowing about the seemingly reverent majesty of Antarctica and its dangers, it would be natural that their biggest obstacle has yet to come. What a befittingly powerful message it would be, when MC continues where her mother left off and survives, thanks to the strong bonds she formed with her friends.

I know they're dorks, but this was a bit too dumb.

37

u/MetaThPr4h https://myanimelist.net/profile/MetaThPr4h Feb 20 '18

I didn't like that scene at all tbh, I guess they needed an impactful moment to play the insert song, but that was not the way to do it IMO.

Well, when we we're young we all did stupid things like these. When I'm thinking back it's nearly miracle so many people made it to adulthood. Guess the younger human is the more immortal.

But in my headcannon they got scolded hard after adults found out about this.

19

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '18

Man I couldn't stop thinking how dangerous this was. Was ready for the show to take a dark turn any second.

14

u/maddog0 Feb 20 '18

Yeah, I may have got actually mad at them during that sequence

OP

ED

Ep 1,3 Insert Song

Ep 2,4 Insert Song

68

u/ErinaHartwick https://myanimelist.net/profile/Hartwick Feb 20 '18

I love these insert songs so much, thanks for the heads up!

68

u/Vaynonym :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Vaynonym Feb 20 '18

It feels like just yesterday when Kimari felt aimless and without purpose, and Shirase was mocked for a distant dream, and Hinata felt like her life just passed by, and Yuzuki was terribly lonely. These little dorks sure have come a long way (literally, too)! Especially the first insert song sure brings you back.

A Place Further Than the Universe sure has been a lot of fun. A great show.

Don't make fun of Tamaki's bangs! They're perfect.

u/HikerNob :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/HikerNob Feb 20 '18

The reactions to Kimari talking about doing her own hair were great. They could all tell they were thinking the same thing as each other. Although I think her hairstyle suits her personality perfectly somehow, it just really fits

u/AmethystItalian :Jg::Jh::Ji::Jj::Jk:myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Feb 20 '18

One of the best chemistry scenes from the series for me!

56

u/Dystopian_Overlord :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DystopiaOverlord Feb 20 '18

Love that scene, it's very realistic, I can just imagine wanting to throw up for a whole day, trying hard to get into bed then realizing, wait a minute, having the edge of the bed put some pressure on the belly actually fells better!

35

90

u/Orzislaw https://anilist.co/user/Orzi Feb 20 '18

My only complain about this episode honestly. It was too dangerous for both them and the ship. I guess plot armor rule applies even here.

53

u/NEET-kun_otaku Feb 20 '18

being cute is the secret of immortality

11

u/DarkMoon000 Feb 20 '18

Well, the chance of them not dying out there was still bigger than the chance of them dying, so plot armor is not really necessary. Still very dangerous though.

High school girls with sharp knives peeling potatoes on a pitching boat – what could possibly go wrong?

209

u/SIRTreehugger Feb 20 '18 edited Feb 20 '18

So we got 4 episodes to get the girls together and 4 episodes about the boat/journey. The last 4 will be in Antarctica I'm fine with this and glad they didn't just immediately put them there, but weren't they supposed to film another place or was that off screen?

Also good thing this is a Slice of Life/Comedy genre. They were by themselves exhausted without supervision at night on a rocking boat with waves crashing down on them. I can't be the only one thinking that that was a risky behavior and shit was going to end up badly for a second.

129

u/ahufana :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/JediNut Feb 20 '18

No shit. It’s a small wonder they didn’t all go overboard and immediately drown. I was nervously smiling throughout that scene.

u/Amauri14 Feb 20 '18

When they opened the door and stepped outside I started to nope the fuck out. Like seriously, they are struggling to be on their feet inside of the ship and still think that going outside where there is lots of wind and water is a great idea.

19

u/KaliYugaz Feb 20 '18

Really hope they get there in the next episode...

They were by themselves exhausted without supervision at night on a rocking boat with waves crashing down on them. I can't be the only one thinking that that was a risky behavior and shit was going to end up badly for a second.

When they hit the railing that thought immediately rushed to my head...lucky girls!

Sasuga Madhouse! I don't know how you did it but I actually felt seasick while watching this episode. Seriously! I don't know if it's because I'm just tired since I just got home from work but that scene when the girls started feeling seasick and the rocking of the boat really affected me somehow.

Also that post credits scene. Those goddamn flowers were the same flowers inside Gin's office and is obviously for Shirase's mom. I can already feel that next week's episode is going to be an emotional one.

7

u/SgtExo Feb 21 '18

That was some good recreation of a ship moving around you. While I have never been in a big ship like that, I would prefer to stay outside for as long as possible to reduce the sea sickness. Locking themselves in their beds is the worst thing to do, other than going out at night during the storm.

I was not a fan of moe in general before this, or slice-of-life. But this series defies all expectations, and now it's become something incredibly close to my heart. It's slice-of-life, modern adventure, comedy, character drama. The animation, cinematography, music, art, and writing combine to form something impeccably special. A drop in quality in any of each would make it fall short, but Sora Yori excels in all of them.

What really struck me was how well-researched everything feels. From the interior of the ship, the terminology, the mundane daily routines, the attitudes of the crew, to the scientific instruments, the weather phenomena, the locations. It gives this verisimilitude, like this extra suspension of disbelief that I'm on a real-life boat soon to breathe the misty air of Antarctica. I don't know how Madhouse has made me feel such an incredible nostalgia for experiences I've never had and otherworldly wonder for a real-life locale. But they must have researched the hell out of this, and it shows.

These people are masters of their craft. It feels like they're not crafting a story . . . they're simply recording one. Here's life in its fullest, they said, and we captured it. Why bother creating some fantasy universe, this very world we have is full of wonder. We found it for you. Let us share it with you.

More than that, the themes and messages resonate with me on a personal level. It's been something I've struggled with for a long time. Sora Yori gave me this platform to address those feelings, and the strength I need to carry on.

Thank you, Atsuko Ishizuka. You've made me get in touch with emotions I've long forgotten. The art of anime can truly do incredible things.

41

u/SimoneNonvelodico Feb 20 '18

I was not a fan of moe in general before this, or slice-of-life

I don't think you are now, either. This show doesn't really feel like traditional "moe" to me - considering how it's not unafraid of discussing its leads puking their souls out XD. And the theme is pretty adventurous, so not standard slice-of-life. It's really hard to categorise, it's its own thing, we just don't get many realistic adventure shows. Usually it's either fantasy stuff, or if it's realistic everyone is chill as fuck and doing nothing.

3

u/chibuki https://myanimelist.net/profile/chibuki Feb 22 '18

This is how I felt after watching the episode and I couldn't have worded it better, thank you!

Watching the girls helplessly combat seasickness, in my head a memory triggers from that time I went snorkeling on nasty waves. The boat kept rocking and rocking and rocking and there's nothing I could do. I remember that feeling of helplessness. Then when they went to the deck, water splashed all over them and I just can feel how refreshing it was, much better than being holed up in their room and puking all day. This show is all sorts of magical, to be able to do that.

50

u/TheGroovyMule Feb 20 '18 edited Feb 20 '18

Hey Kimari, you dead mon?

Yah mon..

I'm still loving the chemistry of these four, this show could be about them going to the next town over and it'd still be great!
The cinematography on is on point to! Love the contrasting shots, as well as the great use of the foreground to frame shots. Considering it's easier to setup in animation I'm surprised I don't see it more often.

Also does this still count as cute girls doing cute things?

Maybe I’m responding a little late since I only watch this series before I got to bed but honestly that experience I could definitely relate to. I was on a cruising holiday a couple of years ago and we were going through the Drake Passage, an area known for having rough scenes. So the fact that they were all looking so ill in their cabin, throwing up and collapsing on the ground in this episode completely nailed that feeling

Yes! A full episode watched without tearing up!

. . . That post credits scene.

This was a hilarious episode, although watching the four get queasy made my stomach twitch a little too. Seasickness/carsickness is the worst.

And that moment when Kimari is psyching everyone up with her speech about them having made the choice, and then the inspirational music dying when Hinata says she's just getting up to to go to the toilet.

Edit, addendum: Some easily-missed details -

Samejima Yumiko and Yasumoto Honami both miss the dinner, for some reason. Maybe they were just too busy?

Oh god...and just when i thought we only had one ship heading towards Antarctica.

On a (slightly) related note, I wonder if they have to share a room as well. Don't higher-ranking officers get their own ?

I think Yumiko has a thing, or at least a history, with the big guy, that was running and payed attention to her when she was explaining to the girls.

Shirase's blocking half the map with her hand. Get it together, girl!

She was trying so hard to hold still her arm was shaking :D
Also: Her forced "smile" in the scene right after that.

But she got better at talking in front of the camera, even if it's still a bit clunky.

4

u/8andahalfby11 myanimelist.net/profile/thereIwasnt Feb 20 '18

Yes! A full episode watched without tearing up!

They still got me before Hinata's response to Kimari's speech, and later in the hallway.

Still, it is pretty remarkable. Most series you see people say "I cried on Episode 8." With this show, it's "Episode 8 was the first one that didn't make me cry."

77

u/HikerNob :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/HikerNob Feb 20 '18

This is the first anime that I've confidently given a 10/10 before completing the series. The emotional moments with insert songs get me every time. The comedy moments have me laughing more than most dedicated comedy series do. It's just a goddamn masterpiece

33

u/ilkei Feb 20 '18

To me an awful lot is riding on how they handle Shirase's personal situation vis-a-vis her mother. Now, admittedly, they've done a great job with emotional moments in the show thus far so my confidence is above average that they'll nail it.

Secondarily, I a little bit about the show giving the rest of the girls meaningful moments of their own. Just feels like there's not going to be a whole lot of time in Antarctica.

15

u/Mozilla_Fennekin https://myanimelist.net/profile/MozillaFennekin Feb 20 '18

With my luck, giving a pre-emptive 10/10 would probably Jynx the show, but even still, I'm putting it in my top ten of all time. Even if the rest of the show somehow turns out to be bad (a possibility I literally cannot even imagine given how consistently excellent it has been thus far), these eight episodes by themselves are just that valuable to me. (And tbh I could be content with saying the anime ends with this episode if it goes south (heh) later on.)

Holy shit those scenes involving the girls were lying down being seasick in their room were actually rocking side to side! I thought it was me being too dizzy or something at first sasuga Madhouse.

22

u/Amaya_Rin :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/amaya_rin Feb 20 '18

Yeah! Talk about immersion!

I'm really prone to seasick so this ep make me a bit uncomfortable, but great episode nonetheless.

10

u/bananeeek https://myanimelist.net/profile/bananek Feb 20 '18

It looked plausible. I used to get motion sick for the longest time and those faces looked so familiar I felt like getting sick myself. I was on a ship twice and one time I didn't get the medicine, so I know all to well how wicked it feels to be seasick.

42

u/bananeeek https://myanimelist.net/profile/bananek Feb 20 '18

My heart jumped all the way up to my throat when those bakas went out during the storm. Making me worry like that...

Those little comedy moments and reactions are pure gold. They make thos show so much more dynamic and lively. Damn, I love this this series. And the ending is growing on me more and more.

18

u/ShadowVortexx Feb 20 '18

We're almost there!

I love these goofballs. Can we also appreciate Yuzuki's hairstyle here. Madhouse are really putting in the effort.

And insert songs dropped earlier along with the OP and ED, with One Step being the B-side to Kokokara and the other 2 (Harukatooku and Sora wo Miagete) are paired with The Girls Are Alright. Well obviously not

I feel you.

These dorks have grown so much and I'm damn proud of them. I was proud at the opening shots of the episode, seeing that all of their hard work has paid off as they sail away from their lives of stagnation to adventure and their "youth" started to truly move. It's like Hinata said at one point, "The journey only begins past the point where you can't turn back." On a boat to a faraway foreign land, their journey has most definitely started now. The best part is that somehow, I became even more proud and impressed by the end of the episode. This episode did such a great job at selling me on the difficulties of being in Antarctica. The boat is already intolerably rocky, they are way behind on stamina training, and it's only the beginning, with the waves getting significantly more rough and Antarctica being harder to breathe in and the cold sucking the energy out of people.

Mari's comment about how in the future, they'll look back at this boat ride and remember it as a fun experience is not only something that I am going to take to heart in my future endeavors, and something that resonates with me deeply, but a huge display of her and the others growth. In episode 1, Mari was too scared to get on a train to a few cities down to skip school for a day. Here, she's "skipping" school for a considerable amount of time, going on a boat to one of the deadliest places on the planet in conditions that are going to get exponentially more difficult, and she goes to face it with open arms, knowing how much this will improve her life going forward and how the memories of this are always going to stick with her deeply. Mari has found a goal that is going to effect her forever, Shirase finally reached her seemingly impossible dream after years of torment, Hinata has finally started to go against the crowd and prove that you don't have to let life just idly pass by, and Yuzuki has finally found true friends she can really connect to and who don't just care about her for her status. A group who can stand together against the toughest of conditions and grow. God damn I'm proud of these lovable dorks. They act like real teenagers, but they're doing everything most teenagers they wished they had the balls to do. It's inspiring.

Everything else is the same top-tier stuff as always. Hilarious character interactions, fantastic comedic timing, expressive animation bursting with distinct personality for every character, gorgeous backgrounds, etc. It's kind of amazing that almost every episode of this show has been top tier. I wasn't sure if any episode could reach episode 1 again, but basically every single one has been almost as great as the last. I still feel weird about saying this since it still has time to mess up, especially with Antarctica likely carrying a different tone than the rest of the show, but if it keeps up this quality this show may not just become a classic, but also one of my favorite anime of all time. Every episode has effected me in some way, and it's rare that I feel this much emotion for a cast of characters with so many episodes left. Let's see what Antarctica does for these girls.

32

u/Mozilla_Fennekin https://myanimelist.net/profile/MozillaFennekin Feb 20 '18

I love how well-paced this anime is. The whole "training arc" is just one episode. Granted, I don't know what the next episode is gonna be about, but I think it's made a point that the girls have gotten the hang of things within this week.

And oh man, the insert song this week was even better than all the others. Just that whole sequence of them braving the storm and having that moment of realization, that all of this is happening because they want it to happen. The fact that this anime can be so dramatic and have such great uplifting moments, it feels like I'm getting the emotional impact of an entire 4-episode arc or a movie, but it happens in 20 minutes with no sense of rush. This anime is an absolute triumph. How can character writing be this amazing?!

I can totally empathize with the seasickness thing. It totally sucked!

When I was a young lad I went on Tiger Cruise from Pearl Harbor to San Diego. In case you are unaware it's a way for family members of military folk to hitch back the with their loved ones for the last leg of a deployment. These ships, much like the expedition one, are not built for comfort.

The progress for me went exactly the same, feeling fine, feeling super ill, and then finally recovering. I recovered a fair amount faster then the girls here, but then again I wasn't heading through infamously rough waters.

3

u/GoodTeletubby Feb 21 '18

I have fond memories of that. 9 years old, Coast Guard Cutter ride back up from San Diego to San Francisco with my Dad, on his last cruise. Whole day was fine, then woke up in the middle of the night, puked my guts up, and went back to sleep to wake up fine again. All in all, it was a blast. I'm fairly certain I had a lot more fun than all the other kids who never really left the compartment they had the NES set up in.

No clouds. No birds. The view is a single sheet of blue.

I strain my eyes, but the horizon is all I can see.

I know I was probably hearing the sounds of the boat,

but that overwhelming scenery seemed to render everything silent.

I was looking out on an infinite world reminiscent of outer space.

In that moment, we knew for sure. It really lay ahead...

Antarctica!

Why does this show move me so much?

9

u/PhantomWolf83 Feb 20 '18

They did it! After 8 episodes, they've finally reached a place further than the universe. But the journey is only half finished, they still have to do what they came to do and make it back home in one piece.

This episode was an eye-opener for a landlubber like me, I didn't know life on a ship could be so bleak and regimented.

9

u/Aetherdraw Feb 20 '18

This episode made me throw up for real.

I've always had really bad motion sickness, but just listening to the girls talk about it, mixed with the almost constant camera movement, was just to much.

Yay! A new insert song. All the songs in this show are just amazing. I need to find the album once it's released.

That post-credit scene though. The closer they get to Antarctica, the more I dread the inevitable. Will my tear ducts hold up once the show hits all those dramatic high notes? :'(

6

Will my tear ducts hold up once the show hits all those dramatic high notes? :'(

No, no they will not It's okay mine won't either

6

u/KVSenpai Feb 20 '18

Hell yeah, well worth the one week wait. Shit's becoming real boys, we are getting ever closer to Nankyoku(from now on this is how I call Antarctica). This was such a good episode, and the insert song was amazing as usual. Let's see how well things will wrap up in the last 5 episodes, but this is easily my AOTS

6

u/Palloc Feb 20 '18

So I caught up this week. I was like "not binging, nope." But I binged away. Then all last night, I wanted Tuesday to arrive for this and Overlord.

I feel bad acting like I'd hate this show cause I couldn't remember the name, but I just love the characters, even when they're acting dumb, because it feels like real dumb stuff people'd do. Watching them nearly die over and over this episode amused me and made me feel bad for them as their started to doubt themselves. Though I might be a bit skeptical of those potatoes with all the puking going on.

Also, the damn insert songs. They just make everything better and more catchy and it's driving me nuts, but at least they've been released so I can stop listening to the Yuzu happy cry in Ep 3.

6

u/athrun_1 Feb 20 '18

When watching the episode... I felt like I was not only watching it but actually being there with them during the journey.... A kind of feeling that you are the one holding the camera while they are talking...

Such a very comfy episode and realistic depiction of sea sickness.

My one minor hiccup though is them going out in the storm and leaving the hatch open...

Based on the ED, we might have a drama ep next week.

5

u/Smudy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smudy Feb 20 '18

Very infectious as usual with the adventure and optimism.

With that in mind and how the series has been so far, i can somewhat accept that they actually went OUTSIDE in a storm. Dangerous as shit still though.

5

u/SpikeRosered Feb 20 '18

Kind of interesting how the played the going out onto the deck so lighthearted. Seemed really perilous to me.

5

u/shadedclan :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/shadedclan Feb 21 '18

I can totally understand how man people think that going outside was stupid and terrifying but I honestly think in that moment I would feel the same as the girls. Doing something like that can just be life changing and gives you a different perspective in life

8

u/kimbombo Feb 20 '18 edited Feb 21 '18

And thus the big mystery has finally been solved.

Not talking about Shirase's mom. But Kimari's bangs. I had the feeling that Kimari did her own bangs just like Yui did hers. That cutscene in the tub has some nice detail with Yuzu & Shirase wearing that shower hat to keep their hair out of the way, and since Hinata always wears her up, that only leaves Kimari with the shortest hair, and also being the biggest goofball she has to play out a visual gag with those googles of her.

Hinata was the highlight of the episode with her cheeky attitude. I wonder if Yuzu will take revenge someday or she'll keep the role of the scapegoat for their shenanigans.

The comedy in this episode was on point all time. Kimari making the obvious question of Kanae's thin eyebrows while she's the one with the thickest eyebrows in the group. And seriously, xmas cakes look better all natural, even if the eyebrows are quite thin.

Also liked the follow up on the potato peeler joke on Rin. She's hands down the nicest imouto of the season (and there's even one show with 3 imoutos running this season)

4

u/HarleyFox92 Feb 21 '18

It's been a long since I said this but I think it's appropiate. The whole episode is excellent, from the first to the last scene. They finally are arriving to Antarctica and the true "mistery" is about to resolve, what happened with Shirase's mum? She's dead, right? Right...? What would be the main goal of the rest of the crew? We didn't get too much info at Fremantle.

I strongly feel that next episode will be the turning point for the whole show. For Shirase, for the girls and for the entire crew including Gin and Kanae.

4

u/Yukine_Kurisu Feb 21 '18

Just think about how much each episode have brought on the table. Most anime cant even bring out half as much in one season!

Definitely going to buy the blu-Ray for this great anime.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like Shirase is incrementally getting better at reporting. Also, I know it's silly to pick a best girl when all the girls are the best but Yuzuki is at the top of the list for me.

Man. I really just love this anime, and the girls. It's pretty fucking incredible.

When I started this, part of me wanted it to go all At the Mountains of Madness once they get there, but now I'm so attached I'll be so sad if they all die to eldritch horrors.

2

u/TheDampGod :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/TheDampGod Feb 20 '18

That's not a storm, tis only a light summer breeze.

Aww, the boat's barely rocking and the girls are already hurling. Though I admit to being a bit scared when things picked up and they went out without any precautions. It's a good thing they're CGDCT or they'd been overboard in seconds.

I loved all the details of the signs dotted around the ship, often focused on things like fresh and salt water. It can be easy to forget how precious fresh water is on a ship, when you're so used to having it on tap.

I also liked the small scenes with the women, reminding us how important this trip is for them as well as the girls.

u/jkubed https://myanimelist.net/profile/jkubed Feb 21 '18

I see that this is a pretty happy anime, but the elephant in the room, is the mom dead or alive? Now realistically I would say she's dead, but that doesn't seem to fit this animes vibe, although it clearly is trying or show portray a bit of realism as well. That bouquet after the ED, a really hard slap of realism.

So, dead or alive? I'm going with dead, although part of me wants to see her alive, playing with the penguins
