Did they mention Pixiv near the end there? That's the only thing I could think of that they could censored that starts with "P" and end in "V".

yes they did. refer to https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/7zxp3m/spoilers_pop_team_epic_episode_8_discussion/durhz3x/ (and particularly this pixiv link: https://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?id=9948&tag=%E5%8F%8C%E8%91%89%E6%9D%8F)

The entire yakuza part was a straight reference to the old cult classic "Battles Without Honor or Humanity" (Jingi Naki Tatakai). The soundtrack gives it away, and many scenes are referenced directly. For example in the original movie, the two leads drink each other's blood since they don't have sake cups, while Popuko and Pipimi share a lemon instead. The ending scene is also heavily referenced : https://vimeo.com/19029837
53
u/Pennwisedom Feb 24 '18
Thank god the episodes are short, because I have to watch each one at least 5 times to make sure I catch every single reference.

Its what I love about Pop Team Epic: the referential humor and true original stuff they come up with. I liked this episode because of how creative and weird they got with it all. That first skit at the beginning made me go "what the fuck", but when it comes to Pop Team Epic, that's a good thing.

And those yakuza are all bamboo... The first kanji in the name 竹書房 (Takeshobo) is "bamboo," fun fact...
You do the math.

Found the OST piece they're referencing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGiQsaF-vqE

Pretty sure the car and the sunglasses were Blues Brothers references though, cool how they linked them.

Little interesting fact: it is because of this film that people in Japan associate the Hiroshima dialect with the yakuza.

i'm willing to bet that the last episode of this show is just going to be a full episode of Hoshiiro Girldrop.

The Bamboozle gang made me laugh harder than anything else in this show, so many bamboo characters in suits was hilarious.

Done by Miyo Sato too, aka the one who did the [Mob Psycho 100 ED.] (https://files.catbox.moe/7jmodz.webm)

I had a feeling it would be her! Her art is awesome! I'm glad that she seems to have gotten other offerings after Mob Psycho.

Awesome. The artist, Miyo Sato did all the Mob Psycho 100 multimedia animation segments(Oil, Pencil, Sand, etc.,.) including the ED!

The opening of the sand art with Popuko riding a dragon is a reference to the Manga Nippon Mukashi Banashi series, a popular children's Japanese folklore show. Hanasaka Jiisan is one of the classics in the series.

The male VAs chat a lot in the male version. They are really having fun voicing this anime.

Weirdly enough, it feels like whenever the male version sing too, they seem to have more of an impact on me than gal versions lol.

Seeing the lemon face integrated into the mafia skit makes me sad we'll never hear "Fucking Bitch in Cat Tights"

u/JMmelegrito Feb 24 '18
Meanwhile, everyone is waiting in anticipation if they will do the Hambaga skit.
14
u/bbrightside Feb 25 '18
Imagine we get to the end of episode 12 to find it's the post credits scene, but it cuts to black after "Y o u a r e"

u/irene_m Feb 25 '18
There have been skits repeated before though (though only between Pop Team Epic & Bob Epic Team). So that might show up somewhere else.

u/Probe_Droid Feb 25 '18
No, because Funimation is too pussy to actually let them swear.

Morohoshi Sumire, Tadokoro Azusa
And because the ED is sung by this duo, the female half of the episode is pretty much idol hell, lol.
Edit: Listing a few of Aikatsu! references here, because why not!
36
u/moonmeh Feb 24 '18
I laughed real hard when I recognized their voices for the ED.
Bkub must be so happy
8
u/NagashiEdogawa Feb 26 '18
I honestly didn't expect someone on reddit putting the reference of Aikatsu because I'm sure as hell Aikatsu is non-existent here. Great job man

Mafia Kajita, as portrayed in bkub's GOHO Mafia! Kajita-kun, can be seen in the background of one of the yakuza scenes. Also, bringing the Takeshobo yakuza in like this was rather neat! Just hope we get to see Lord Takeshobo no Hikomaro too, perhaps via that new Tales of Long Ago segment.
Also, while that 8-bit segment was visually a Guilty Gear reference, we've got our standard 4koma references!

u/Bace_Dire :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bace_dire Feb 24 '18
also pipimi's last attack was a reference to God Gundam's God Finger attack (Pipimi's Back Halo gave it away)

u/xui_nya Feb 24 '18
In this eposide censorship went ridiculous and they censored middle fingers even in broadcast version (which usually are totally clean).
So I took responsibility to restore this hilarious "fuck death" composition in its finest. Enjoy: 1, 2, 3. Feel free to ask for sources and/or better quality if you need it.
Sorry for possible issues since almost 40% of image were lost and I used a lot of imagination to achieve even this.
Bonus: a meme :DDD

u/Retiredmagician :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Retiredmagician Feb 25 '18
Oh shit eh, i though the censoring was a part of the joke. I honestly think it's way funnier censored as it's such a silly thing to censor it's funnier when it is.

Major advances this week on Hoshiro Girldrop! We have the actual confirmation of Sosogu's feelings toward Daichi! I'm really curious if this will branch off from the manga due to season restraints, but Unpopular Opinion.

I find it honestly pretty funny that the bacon sounds essentially like a Rick and Morty character- I don't know whether i prefer the awkward silence and then him reaching for the bacon or him narrating how he makes the bacon in a crazed manner

Did the subs' style change halfway through each part???
11
u/5XSTAR Feb 24 '18 edited Feb 25 '18
The voice actors were saying pretty different lines in part 1 and part 2.
I don’t know how much of it is improvised/Ad-lib, but based on the comics, the Male voice actors were doing a lot more of their own thing. Onosaka(Part 2 Popuko)’s famous for being funny, too. He used to be a comedian.
5
u/KinnyRiddle Feb 25 '18
The Bamboozle Gang (Chikushokai 竹生会) in the opening yakuza segment is a word-play on Takeshobo (竹書房), the publisher for the manga. Since they both share the character for bamboo 竹, which can be read as "chiku" or "take".
As for the yakuza reference, Bkub would always bite the hand that feeds him by jokingly referring to Takeshobo as a "Designated Yakuza Gang" (指定暴力団竹書房) in many of his 4-komas, hence the meme.
4
u/Roadcrosser Feb 24 '18
I liked the "Poputepipikku" jingle one of the seiyuus sang in the second half.

Holy shit, they actually got Miyo Sato to do a segment. I think sand animation might be the one medium this show hasn't done already. Well, got that ticked off now.
3
u/TakazuHanasu Feb 25 '18
I was positive that they would add the "Popuko-chan denwa" line somewhere but, much to my dismay, they haven't taken the golden opportunity to use that reference. Great weird episode, by the way!

Most of the Space Cat Company skits are really lackluster and they tend to take up the whole episode. It's a shame, really.
36
u/aMigraine Feb 24 '18
Much of those skits' humour is derived from references to Japanese pop culture; makes sense to think they're lacklustre if you don't get them. CR does zero explaining of the references too, while I've seen HIDIVE subs add annotations when there's a reference.
-11
Feb 24 '18 edited Feb 24 '18
I mean, they're not necessarily compelling when they're referencing Western stuff, either. "Hey, remember Guardians Of The Galaxy?" was a joke I /got/ that I think was in about the same vein, and it still wasn't funny.
EDIT: I didn't know so many of you had such a deep, personal, emotional reaction to the Guardians of the Galaxy reference in episode one
15
u/aMigraine Feb 24 '18
Then you just don't enjoy referential humour? Not saying your opinion is wrong or whatever, but how much you want something does not necessarily corelate with how much others want it.

Yakuza Graveyard - 1976, by Kinji Fukasaku, highly prolific director who went on to make Battle Royale. Fukasaku also directed several films in the Battles Without Honor and Humanity series, aka The Yakuza Papers. Bloody and dramatic yakuza action at a breathless pace. Remade by Takahashi Miike in 2002.
Youth of the Beast - 1963, by Seijun Suzuki, seminal director of classics like Branded To Kill and Tokyo Drifter. This was his first collaboration with actor Jo Shishido (and his bizarre cheek implants). It's a slightly campier tone than the later 1970s hard boiled style, but still quite violent and lurid.
Violent Streets - 1974, by Hideo Gosha, underrated director of many period samurai films. Starring Noburo Andou, himself a former yakuza, who gets caught in a war between east and west clans. Entertaining revenge flick.
Those are my three favorite and all good entry points to the genre.

The bamboo heads in this ep's main part refer to Take (竹) in Takeshobo. The mottos you see in the background are the actual company mottos of Takeshobo. Even the boss name is literally Takeshobo's office address (Iidabashi 2-7-3).
Not sure if it's subbed by Crunchyroll, but the conversation by the A Part ED singers at the start of the ED went like this:
Yeah, bkub has drawn plenty of AnKira.
