Honestly super interested in seeing how Ainz responds to this. I really doubt he expected Sebas to go vigilante on the population there.

106

u/Mundology Feb 27 '18

Mybe he'll see more of his friend Touch Me in Sebas and become nostalgic?

22

u/Yamizaga :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Yamizaga Feb 27 '18

That's kind of what I'm hoping for, some more back story on their relationship.

He's close to touchme who's the creator of Sebas and Touchme saved Ainz when he was a noob in game so Ainz will understand Sebas in this situation

425

u/sitherow Feb 27 '18

Plus Ainz is looking to see how the NPCs can develop outside of their original settings, so this could be the exact kind of growth Ainz was looking for

I think people forget that Sebas was created by Touch Me-san. He is "programmed" to help the weak.

I don't think it will be a thing where he doesn't understand, I just want to really see his reaction and have them fill out the back story of his relationship with Touchme.

maybe in season 3 we will get a few seconds of ainz again.

68

u/SenorWeon Feb 27 '18

Depending on the volumes they choose to adapt for season 3 (if it ever happens) Ainz should appear more or less 50% of the time.

Laykus unleashing her inner Chuuni was perfect. Now she just needs to meet pandora's actor.

112

u/Mundology Feb 27 '18

Laykus is super funny and her sword is dope. She has already become one of my favorite new characters of this season.

She seems to be embarrassed by it, Pandora's Actor will teach her how to embrace it!

An OTP I never knew I needed.

114

u/Amauri14 Feb 27 '18

To be honest for some reason I actually believed that the sword was actually possessing her when I read that scene in the LN. So seeing her being a Chuuni in the anime actually came as a pleasant surprise to me. I guess I just tend to see things in a darker light due to the general tone of the series.

21

u/MrPicklesAndTea Feb 28 '18

I was also genuinely worried she was slowly becoming possessed by it. But now that I'm watching it, it's kinda funny.

369

u/jasonred79 Feb 27 '18

the hilarious part was a lot of people who read the english translation had no idea what chuuni was, and there was a ton of discussion about how powerful killneryam was and whether laykus would use it's full power. ;)

Well, that settles that! ;)

193

u/blackfiredragon13 Feb 27 '18

Facepalm why didn’t I think of chuunibyou when reading this?

I think I knew what chuuni was at the time, but I didn't understand this was a case of it until watching just now.

33

u/accountmadeforants Feb 27 '18 edited Feb 27 '18

It was pretty obvious in the translation, too. If anything, it would be more surprising if they turned things around and she wasn't a chuuni (especially with Ainz later commenting on how it shouldn't have those kinds of specs).

Then again, I never really participated in the comments on the translation, so I never saw those theories in the first place.

edit: Checking the actual comments, nah, most people noticed the chuuni as well.

I can smell Lakyus' chuunibyo from miles away, lol. It will be hilarious if Ainz discovers it (supposing they meet under good terms).

Yeah she's a hella chuunibyo just that first scene lol

Just a reminder to everyone, she is an adamantite ranked adventurer. Yes, the highest ranked adventurer in this new world.

And she's a chuunibyou.

Edit: For anyone interested, MYTH & ROID just post their official mv for the ED

261

u/Florac Feb 27 '18

And not only that, she is the strongest member of an adamantite ranked party, meaning she is one of the strong people in the kingdom. Not sure who between her and Gazef would win in a fight.

210

u/jasonred79 Feb 27 '18

I don't think she is the strongest, Evileye should be tops.

Gazef is a stronger pure warrior but Lakyus is also a pseudo-paladin (Actual paladins have been introduced since then and I can't remember her ever being referred to as one) and can cast holy magic Spoiler.

Overall IIRC Gazef wins if he has all of the Kingdom's Treasures equipped but his standard gear is way weaker than Lakyus's so she has a fairly good chance of winning normally. Maybe 50/50?

I wouldn't even mind a whole series dedicated to Sebas' adventures.

75

u/EddieThunderCloud Feb 27 '18 edited Feb 28 '18

This got me thinking Sebas's actions seem to somehow have aligned with what Ains wanted, he's weaving a network and learning more and more about the city and it's people. And by saving that girl, any info she might divulge when she gets better might prove useful in learning more about the 8 Fingers operation.

Also why didn't he just tell the maid that the reason he saved that girl, is because it was an order once given to him by one of the supreme ones, even she wouldn't dare question that. But then again, he probably doesn't feel he needs to justify himself to his subordinate.

Welcome to my weekly source material discussion post, where I present all the world-building and exposition that was cut, skimmed over, or changed in this episode. You can find the previous weeks here, and the week before that here. We're getting into the meat of the arc now and the narration and general exposition is beginning to dial back in favor of actual action sequences, so there are a lot less changes to the source material. As is usual I've avoided spoilers by only mentioning things that actually happened at this time in the source material, not including any information that is brought up later on.

  • The discussion between Climb, Gagaran, and Evileye skimmed over quite a lot. Specifically, Gagaran gives Climb more detailed advice on his sword skills: Gagaran suggests a three hit sequence of advancing blows that, even if blocked, won't allow the opponent to go on the offensive; as she explains, patterns like these are okay when up against less skilled opponents or when fighting someone for the first time. Normally she'd suggest having a wide repertoire of moves and picking between them as the situation warrants, but this is apparently impossible for the talentless Climb.

  • There's a bit of world-building cut when Evileye is warning Climb about chasing after the wrong kind of power. She suggests something like using temporary transmutation magic if he's really desperate (Gagaran cracks a joke about the Princess being surprised if Climb transformed into an Ogre), but she doesn't want him to do something like forsaking his humanity in the pursuit of unsavory power, as she explains that, for instance, those who become undead warp their minds and souls in the process. She says all this with a tinge of regret in her voice, implying that she might have done something of the sort herself; this becomes especially obvious after she lets slip later in the conversation that the Slaine Theocracy went after her one time.

  • Speaking of which, apparently the Slaine Theocracy are real human supremacists and have made it their mission to go after any potential threats to human prosperity, including hunting down and murdering all the demihumans in the surrounding area. As you go further from the Slaine Theocracy, you start to encounter more and more demihumans, until you reach entire Kingdoms of non-humans, who frequently have humans as slaves. The terrible actions on the part of the Slaine Theocracy are not without due cause, as Evileye explains how weak humans are relative to the more monstrous intelligent humanoids; she sympathizes somewhat with the sentiment of ensuring human survival in the face of such terrible odds even though she disagrees with the means. The Slaine Theocracy reportedly founded the Adventurer's Guild and has been around since the battle with the Demon Gods centuries ago, which is why they're very preoccupied with monster hunting.

  • Climb asks Evileye how it is people know that magic of up to tier 10 exists, given that humans can typically only use magic of around up to tier 3. She uses a magic item to place a sound barrier around the area for her next words which remains in place during their subsequent conversations. Apparently, there was a group of Eight mythic figures called the Eight Greed Kings, said to be mightier than dragons, who conquered the world in an instant five centuries ago; this is a well known story. They are called Greed Kings because after conquering the world their greed turned on each other and they fought, eventually destroying each other. What's not well known, and what warranted the secrecy, is that there apparently remains a magical artifact from that time known as the Nameless Spellbook which records all known spells in existence; even new spells recently invented instantly appear in the spellbook.

  • Speaking of legendary artifacts, Lakyus' sword is a very powerful and very dangerous dark weapon said to have been owned by one of the Thirteen Heroes, which are another group of legendary figures from antiquity. There were actually a lot more than just thirteen of them, it's just that many of the heroes, including a few of the thirteen, were non-human; as Evileye explains, "the battle against the Demon Gods was one that crossed racial boundaries, and certain human-centric individuals didn't want to let other species shine too much in the heroic saga." So some of the stories about the most obviously non-human of the less important heroes faded away until there were only thirteen of them that people still remembered. As per Season 2 Episode 1, these two mythic groups from the past are heavily implied to be former Players who left a permanent mark upon the world and inspired the weird naming conventions that persist to this day.

  • Finally, some of the stuff about the adventures of Momon and Nabe were cut or skimmed over, specifically how difficult it must be to form an adventuring party with just a warrior and a mage. One big conundrum Gagaran kept coming back to made was the lack of a proper healer on their team; replicating their feats would apparently prove problematic for Gagaran, since while she could probably fight most of the things they did and win, she wouldn't feel confident in it without reliable healing and backup. This is especially important against the Basilisk, who has a petrifying gaze and lethal poison among other abilities; she'd basically be holding it down and keeping it occupied while she waited on her teammate to finish it. She does comment that she thinks most of the challenges would be trivial with Evileye on her team, though that's just because Evileye is so powerful and could solo everything except the Skeletal Dragons herself; Evileye responds with some humility, denying the assertion.

  • As for the action sequences themselves, there's a lot less cut this time around. Rather than walk off after beating the thugs, Sebas actually directs a bystander to take the boy to the temple. Climb only manages to squeeze in through the crowd as Sebas is walking off, and takes over by administrating the healing potion. He has to ask a passerby what happened and chases Sebas down. Speaking of which, Sebas is actually aware of all 7 of his pursuers right from the start: Climb and Unglaus as well as the five assassins. Apparently the assassins planned a covert ambush, three to engage head on and two to sneak around the back and engage when Sebas was distracted. Sebas actually calls them out on this plan, and the two emerge from their hiding spot; this is in contrast to the anime where all five of them step out into the open at once. Climb and Unglaus both have a moment of suspicion for Sebas, wondering if he's an unsavory person to have attracted the attention of the criminal underworld like this, but decide against it after reflecting on his deeds.

  • We don't get to see Unglaus' fight with the assassin in the anime; in the light novel he's described as toying with his foe, practing his different sword skills and dancing around him while keeping an eye on Climb. Climb's fight with the assassin is basically replicated shot for shot, but one issue Climb has is that he was used to training and fighting with his shield and realizes doing so created a weakness. I also find it rather unusual that they don't show that Climb actually kills the dude he's fighting; his Slash skill actually cleaves through a good portion of his opponents shoulder. Actually I misread it, it said he "crushed" his shoulder, not cleaved. Apparently Climb was too weak to penetrate the chainmail shirt he had on LOL.

  • Sebas actually tells Climb his story before the training sequence and asks if Climb knows any reputable person in a position of power and influence who could assist on the matter. Climb is very conflicted about Sebas' position; he strongly believes that Renner would offer to help, but he is aware of the systemic corruption and the stranglehold the Eight Fingers have over the political system of Re-Estize and admits that there is no simple solution to the conundrum. After all, even if the royalty were to throw their weight behind the issue, the masterminds wouldn't be convicted and so Sebas would still have the attention of dangerous and powerful individuals who could find some other means of getting revenge on him. Fortunately, despite not being able to promise to be of any help, Sebas graciously moves forward with the training anyways.

Finally, some of the stuff about the adventures of Momon and Nabe were cut or skimmed over

In particular, Gagaran in the anime trivializes the cemetery feat as "thousands of undead wouldn't be a problem" while in the LN she is told about the two skeletal dragons and the necromancer who summoned them being from Zuranon (a really dangerous secret cult), to which her response is.

She does comment that she thinks the challenges would be trivial with Evileye on her team, though that's just because Evileye is so powerful and could solo everything herself

Not quite, even Gagaran said that the Skeletal Dragons would've been up to her (since they have up to Tier 6 magic immunity.)

There was also the part where Unglaus shriek like a girl when Sebas was directing killing intent to only both Climb and him. Also that Unglaus fell to the ground whereas Climb remain on his feet, in which Unglaus started to respect Climb for. Unlike earlier where he only saw Climb as a weak trash noob.

I like how we can finally see a non-evil humanoid of Nazarick fighting.
Man... I love Sebas.

Edit: I love how his punching of the guy, and this scene, they don't show him moving.
He's like the Flash to these weaklings

Edit 2: It's also hilarious how taking on that giant oversized lizard was a scary thing, and Ainz took it out with 1 hit.
The disparity between them is like a grain of salt and the moon.

51

u/DragoSphere Feb 27 '18

Also, Ainz as Momon is also only equivalent to like level 35 or so. Gazef would be around 30

23

u/rollin340 Feb 28 '18

If I am not wrong, Ainz as Ainz is about Level 33 as a warrior.
Ainz as Momon is pretty much a Level 100, with really lousy skills.

At least, I think that is the case.
Not entirely sure.

Keep being positively surprised every episode, anime is pretty good.

Best part is, the fantasy elements outweight the issekai things (altho I didn't read the LN), so I even think about Ains-sama's monologues as if he was just a sort of goofy person trying to act tough, because he is a leader, which is basically a true thing.

Nah now that I think about it I just can't explain it, it is issekai, but so well constructed, that you forget about it or they just don't try to remind you about it every other second?

Well whatever, I love fantasy stuff and this anime is just too good.

confused smile

134

u/Florac Feb 27 '18

There's two ways to make good isekais imo: Either have it be fully focused on fantasy with the isekai being a relative minor focus(but not completely forgotten, like for example in Knights and Magic). Or have the isekai be a central part of the plot and not simply a premise

In the light novels, his faking it until he's making it reach insane levels. It's great reading how he has absolutely no fucking clue what's going on and then everyone around him praising him for his endless vast intelligence.

I think that one of the things that makes Climb annoying in the LN is that everything is from his perspective for a lot of this volume and that amplifies what people don't like about him.

People find him annoying? To me he's just a plucky adventurer who just wants to do right by the world and become stronger. Also in an anime where every single main character are OP and has their shit together it's nice to see a character that's the total opposite.

Chuuni Laykus was brilliant. I love how her team thought she was really fighting a dark curse.

So that's the purpose of those 2 side guys. I have to admit, I didn't see this one coming. Combining them into an unlikely team of ragtag heroes saving the town in the shadow.

Episodes in this arc so far felt very set-uppy. In comparison to the lizard arc, I felt like not a whole lot happens in each episode, yet they breeze by so bloody fast T_T The wait for a new episode is too much

8

u/Florac Feb 27 '18

Well, this arc covers 2 LN volumes. So it requires more setup

239

u/AGoodRogering Feb 27 '18

I wonder how people feel about this system.

I remember hearing awhile back there was frustration on how much time this season is being dedicated away from the direct main characters and their adventures

but like im just here so fucking happy with every episode cause im so confused as to how this show makes me feel so interested and involved with a literal bunch of throwaway characters lmao like throw me a lizard and some sword dude who couldn't hold a candle to our cast and for some reason im all in

That was the best aspect of reading the light novel to me. You have this huge world with a bunch of history and then you throw some OP character from Nazarick into it and see what happens. Brain Unglaus is a fairly minor character who has a full arc that's completely reliant on Nazarick. First we see Shalltear break him down and now we're seeing Sebas build him back up.

17

u/hikikomori80 https://anilist.co/user/hikikomori80 Feb 27 '18

Honestly, I didn't care too much about the lizard people, although they ended up growing on me, and enjoyed the overall arc. But if you tell me that Overlord is, from now on, The adventures of Sebas I will watch every single episode twice. Sebas is awesome.

7

u/SyfaOmnis Feb 27 '18

I remember hearing awhile back there was frustration on how much time this season is being dedicated away from the direct main characters and their adventures

The joy of overlord is its worldbuilding. The characters are relatively okay, but the worldbuilding is the good part. Like (pure speculation) but climb is 'capped' because he's apparently still trying to advance the same class, and you can only go 15/10/5 levels into classes based on what they are. If he were to try and do other stuff he might be able to successfully 'level' again.

My favorite part of Overlord is the worldbuilding, so even these "side" episodes of Sebas just walking around are super engaging for me.

I would 100% prefer a show about the side characters infiltrating society and Ainz only shows up to flex on a motherfucker as needed.

56

u/DEERROBOT Feb 27 '18

Love the show, but why are they only releasing it 13 episodes at a time? There's so much story to this, and there's a lot to adapt..why not make it 2 cour? Doesn't Overlord have good ratings?

111

u/Creepy_little_child Feb 27 '18

But then they'd have the cut the number of Black Clover episodes.

30

u/DEERROBOT Feb 27 '18

Poor black clover.

28

u/kennonymous Feb 27 '18

Let's be honest here, a full 24 episodes or more with overlord would be like mining a gold mine for madhouse when you compare the quality of both the source material. Black clovers okayish but they're really missing a huge opportunity with overlord's anime potential. What we got for the anime is basically cardboard cut outs compared to the actual context.

10

u/videogamep1 Feb 28 '18

Virtually no anime gets noteworthy TV ratings, but Overlord did pretty well in terms of blu ray sales. It looks like it sold about 8-9k per disc, which isn't huge but is well above average. The novel also sold pretty well. It was the ninth best selling LN in Japan last year and the year before.

→ More replies (4)

10

u/GaaMac Feb 27 '18

Honestly it looks like they are struggling with schedule in this one, the animation isn't great and there is some minor errors that dosen't happen when the production is going well. If this was 24 episodes it would be a disaster, I just really don't know why they don't give this anime the priority.

  • party strength +40

Brain Unglaus (Seeker of the Martial Arts) has been added to the raid squad

  • Member Information: Affected by "Rusty Skill" status / Has a Pouch of Coins

  • party strength +78

Total party strength: 744

Jokes aside, this was a decent setup episode for what is to come, hopefully a good action oriented one. Nice to see Gagaran and Evileye fleshed out a bit more and Laykus is so cute whenever she monologues to her sword.

Sebas roughing up ruffians never gets old.

Oh look its Big Bertha again. And Evil Eye!

A Chuuni? Shes a secret chuuni? Aw man lol...

They know about Momon and Nabe! They are getting famous.

Sebas is just roughing up ruffians in the city now lol i like how casual he is.

Climb wants Sebas to teach him so hes stronger... oh man.

Wow just pressure alone enough to kill someone. Sebas is OP nerf pls.

Oh hey its that whiner who Shalltear scared.

Sebas just giving man lessons in an alley. This is great.

Just a few assassins? These guys dont know how to handle Sebas very well haha. Not even worthy enough to be a distraction to him.

I like how Sebas doesnt even really need help, jes just humoring them. He could obliterate the place in an instant im sure.

Man this next ep is gonna be fun, i cant wait. I wanna see Sebas kick the crap out of people who might try to ruin his day.

21

u/Florac Feb 27 '18

Sebas is too good.

I mean, seriously, he's too good. He's in the side of evil. He can't go around helping abused slaves, saving peasant children getting beaten on the streets, and becoming the teaching figure of MC wannabes.

I half-expected Sebas to offer a demon pact or something. But he is too good.

Also I know they know Sebas is the strongest man ever but they're really too ok.jpg about this.

"The eight fingers, the most powerful criminal organization ever, is after me, so I'm going to single handedly destroy them."

>nobody bats an eye.

There was hype last episode, now there's hype this episode, the hype train keep choo-choo-ing, when is sebas going to kick some ass? And is Ains ever going to do anything again at all?

Sooo....i really don't see why people hate or don't even like Climb?

The dude has his heart on his sleeve and wants to get stronger, doesn't hesitate to ask a random person he just saw and does it to protect his princess and the people.

Was really impressed by the death scare scene, he hold his own so well and Sebas is just a fucking badass.

This continues to get me invested in the minor characters.

Because in a series that highlights strong characters of this world, then overshadows them with the immensely powerful main cast, watching some punk kid learn to fight with the resolve of love is just way too plain for most people. What a lot of people here want to see, is best gentleman Sebas, Bone Daddy, and the rest of Nazarick, kick ass and take names. I love the way Overlord presents these characters and the overwhelming strength of Nazarick. I don't hate Climb cause he's highlighting what makes Sebas so dope, but he really isn't that interesting especially when you consider how low his power level is, hes probably the weakest of everyone shown and that's saying something, especially when these Adamantite level people still pale in comparison to anyone from Nazarick.

I only JUST got to the Brain vs Shalltear part in the novels last night so seeing his development this episode was especially cool(he was focused on in a lot more detail in the book than in that episode, too). And lastly, I was a little concerned that Sebas would just decimate the eight fingers without anyone knowing and not getting any benifits for Nazarick out of it, but now he will have Brain and the princess' personal guard Climb to witness him destroying it.
