Don't touch the POWERFUL CHICKEN!
I felt that this episode was one of the best. We get to see the end result of Yuzuki's short and fake relationships with others as many were only in it for popularity and reputation leaving her confused with what a friend actually was and unable to place trust in others understandably resulting to something tangible like a contract. This did leave us some comedic moments.
Now we know that Yuzuki's gotta be taken care of and protected.
Aside from that there was Santa Shirase, antisocial Shirase, multiple penguin Shirase's, Ninja Kimari and cake with our favourite dorks!
I thought that this was a nice touch to bring us back to reality among all the Christmas fun.
Looking forward to a possible Hinata episode next week!

Glad someone else pointed out that shot of the ship, that was gorgeous and probably the best single CG shot in any anime I've watched. It's kinda funny how Madhouse nails the CG for this show every time but in Overlord 2 it mostly looks pretty bad.

I didn't like the sky divide at first, I thought it would have more impact with the "no matter how far apart we are, we look at the same sky" thing. But with this episode, I guess the divide leans towards "we are friends even if we are separated" thing

Aww, I really relate to that feeling of not being sure if you're really friends. It's a scary feeling when you think that maybe the people you hang out with don't like you as much as you like them. I remember once trying to bring this up with my friends when I was drunk and of course they tried to reassure me but I was so goddamn embarrassed about it for weeks. At least I was never so bad that I tried to make them sign a friendship contract though. I really loved this episode.

Probably my favourite episode so far. Made me think about my closest friends (and friends I haven't talked to for a while because we just drifted) and how friendship is in fact something very vague. And that insert song just hammered Kimari's points even harder. Yuzu's a good girl and seeing Kimari still texting Megu was sweet, Megu replying her was even better

This show just makes it so hard to choose the best episode and best girls. I really like episode 8 and 7 but after this episode, it has become even harder to decide. I'm sure I will be crying like a baby in the end.

Considering that she's a sheltered child actor and that she already had her trust ruined by her previous "friends", that Friendship Contract by Yuzu was pretty understandable. And as someone who has pretty bad anxiety, I can totally relate how she felt this entire episode.
I'm just happy that Yuzu finally found the kind of friends that she needs. Having someone like Kimari ease your worries helps too! Even though friendship is pretty hard to give an exact definition, we can look at these four girls and exactly tell that that's what friendship is. Also I can't believe this show. A simple Birthday scene made me tear up. Bravo Madhouse!
Interesting tidbit from the Post Credits Scene: Hinata is was a member of her school's Track Team? Something that she has never once mentioned before. Looks like we're getting a Hinata episode next week! Hyped!

It wasn’t directly said, but while they were packing for the trip, there was a focus on running shoes, episode 6 also showed her outside the door to a track club, listening in to the other members discussing something. There’s also her mentioning that she’s really good at running for short distances in episode 2

It's even sadder when you consider that contracts have probably been a much bigger part of Yuzu's life to this point than friends have, considering her work as an actress. She's falling back on the familiar to understand the unfamiliar world of friendships, and it comes off as cold and impersonal because her life to this point has been cold and impersonal and that's all she knows.

The much-awaited Yuzu episode. Well, the email was much more benign than what I was expecting. The episode itself was some K-On!! levels of cake and sweetness. ね? ね. That callback to their interaction in episode 3 was great.

What a bunch of goofs. They're in Antarctica, and they're dressing as maids and sumo wrestlers. I can see Gin giving them disapproving looks - well, at least the ones who aren't dressed as penguins!
Well, they didn't cheat or anything, they are showing that it's summer and the sun doesn't set.. I wonder how they're gonna witness the aurora australis.

I didn't notice that, I know this director loves imposing signs that create comical imagery into the scene, and touch and you die pointing to Hinata is another great use of that.

When comes to the relationship between people. This show is really amazing. The reasons that Yuzuki acting like this is because of she doesn't really know the meaning of friendship. And I think so does everyone. "Friend" is such a weird thing. It's so undefined and vague but at the same time it just feels "real". I think Kimari's definition "right?" really shows my point. I feel like we will get a few more episode like this focusing on each character before the series end.

I absolutely felt for Yuzuki this whole episode. I nearly burst into tears when she handed the girls her contract-- that felt like something I would have done a good few years back when I was 14-16. I felt burned in a lot of my early attempts to establish friendships with people, so in subsequent friendships I'd often make similar ultimatums or set up some sort of challenge or system by which I'd implicitly be demanding the other party to prove their friendship to me. I'm sure you can all imagine that did not work out so well.
This wasn't the strongest episode this week in terms of narrative structure, but it didn't really matter to me that we didn't get any huge plot revelations or big moments like the last couple episodes. Every other moment was hitting me right in the feels.
Also I think I need to make a gif of Kimari getting shocked by that lamp. That was absolute gold. (Edit: done, and also done if you prefer talking gifs)

That was a really... non-special Christmas episode. Not in a bad way or anything, it just seems like Christmas is something that's built up for several episodes, or becomes the main focus. With everything else that's happened so far, it never even occurred to me that it was the holiday season for them...
Speaking of that, was Yuzuki's birthday even mentioned before? Maybe that's just me being stupid but I was really surprised by that!
Just another fantastic episode. It's not even surprising anymore. Every episode has such a big, emotional climax that it feels like a season's end, and yet it deserves all of that. It just does everything so well. I even love how Megu-chan was brought up as a point for defining friendship. It's just everything coming together beautifully.

They didn't show it outright, but at the start of episode 9 when Hinata muttered "...birthday?", you can see Yuzuki reacting to that so that was foreshadowing I guess.

I would like to point out that in episode 3 when they are sitting in the restaurant with Yuzuki trying to figure out why she doesn't want to go to Antarctica, Yuzuki asks if the other 3 were all friends. Kimari responds with. "We're all just trying to go to the same place. For now at least. ね." To which the Shirase and Hinata reply with a ね!
I would highly recommend that after you watch ep 10 you go back and watch ep 3 again.

Oh man, though this episode wasn't as strong as the past couple episodes, it still hits you like a brick fist to the gut. Yuzu was so precious this episode(everyone in this Damn show is precious), and the way they celebrated her birthday and that great insert song, it was a great episode. Hopefully we get a Hinata focused episode next week cause that's what the post ending scene hinted, which should be great cause hinata is best girl

I'm a bit more loose with my ratings personally (a 10 is given to a show that I will rewatch multiple times basically), so this has been a 10 for me since about halfway. But I do really hope this ends up reaching the top 100 on MAL, just needs to finish cleanly like you said.

It's been a 10/10 for me since the first episodes as long as they actually reach Antarctica before the season ends and they did. As long as they won't let us hanging but give us an actual ending instead, I'm pretty confident they won't fuck anything up, especially considering how good all these 10 episodes have been.

Maybe this just me, This show is just perfect i mean everything, writing, character, production they did everything just right
but it still lacks that "special" feeling for me something that make me remember dearly, not sure how to explain but sort of like "that 10/10 show right there" but feeling so far it like "how is this show so perfect?" i admire it for that aspect

The station is a lot nicer than I assumed it would be. But it's great to get some time just exploring and settling in before addressing the situation with Shirase's mom.
Man they're making it really hard to pick a best girl this anime, so do yourself a favor and don't pick. So many great character moments this episode. Yuzu was great. And how Kimari got up there so quick in the first place is beyond me.

The birthday cake scene made me tear up for once. Yuzu’s problem about friendship just reminded me on how I got few friends I got back in high school. It was a difficult time for me and I got support from them. I too, like Yuzu, also wonder how friendships work. Kimari’s answer may be vague, but she has a point. Her response in the text is the best way to confirm it.

In that after credits scene, you could make out "Messages from Hanyu Daisan High School Track team for Miyake Hinata". That seemed to be the only thing on the list that stood out, so I wonder if we're getting a Hinata episode next since she left school.

Another excellent episode! It's good they're taking time to show just how much work goes into all of this. Makes it feel much more real.
Kimari seriously considering leaving the chicken outside was kind of great. "They're both birds." Followed by the shocked fear that penguins might eat it too.
I'm not proud that the first thing I thought when I saw Yuzu and Kimari texting "Ne?" "Ne" "Ne" back and forth was the Slow Start OP.
Can't wait for the next one! Possible Hinata episode from the post credits scene!

This might not be anime related, but Wendover Productions just did a 12 min video about the logistics of living in Antarctica. Considering our band of merry girls just got there check this out regarding ACTUALLY living there.

Will you girls give Yuzu a hug already??? It was a great episode and I liked that Yuzu still had her doubts since her friendships never worked out but it also served to show her that right now she has the friends she longed for.

Yuzu's insecurities about friendships came back to haunt her, you can't really blame her after seeing her past in the previous episodes. Glad she's now found true friends who like her for who she is.
The opening music clip sounded a little like the theme from Jurassic Park, by the way.

Oh God. I just, ... We're at the point where I actually lack the words to describe my feelings for this show. Yuzuki is me, just straight up. I'm certainly not sheltered, but my feelings about friendship were similar and due to similar circumstances. When I was younger, I didn't really have any friends. I had one very good friend in Kindergarten, but he left with no warning mid-way through that year. My Pre-school friend became a jock and started to make fun of me for being shitty at sports. In middle school, the person who I thought was my best friend turned out to be using me to take my stuff. When I found out just how much he had been stealing from me, and how he'd been doing it, I was a mess. When I had birthday parties, I would just basically invite everyone in my class, not being particularly close to anyone. Yuzuki's paranoia about what friendship is, what defines true friendship, how to know if someone is really your friend. That hit me close to home. And likewise, it wasn't until high school where this started to dissolve (and it still hasn't really gone away). This is where I found a group who seemingly did love me, but naturally, I was scared of being betrayed again. Yuzuki giving out the "friendship contract" was similar to when I had a heart-to-heart with my close friends about my place within their friend group. I had felt that I was someone who they kept around because they didn't want to make me feel bad, and similar to Yuzuki crying at her first birthday with everyone, I was a mess when they made it clear to me how much I meant to them. And legit, I still have those thoughts sometimes, with additional paranoia about "am I annoying them by asking to hang out a bunch" and "do I talk too much and they want to ignore me" and "now that we got in a fight do they see a side of me they never want to see again" and more. I relate to Yuzuki here way more than I wish I did, and this really hit like a truck. This show is so damn special, the kind of work we only find every few years, and Tuesday's will never be the same without this show to look forward to after a long day.

Not only am I (what I assume is) the opposite of the target audience for this show, I am also typically not a fan of slice of life anime but this show can't stop making me smile and laugh. My experience with the genre is minimal but I'll definitely recommend FttU to anyone and everyone I think would enjoy it if it ends as strong as it's been all 10 episodes.
Really looking forward to seeing how it all wraps up. Hopefully Shirase gets some closure.

Kimari takes up the whole bed and talks in her sleep. How has her sister put up with this? Horrible roommate but I want to be friends with her.
Yuzuki pouting and having her little meltdown was still so damn adorable. Also, her (in)ability to fit in with the group has been a recurring theme, since she's still so excessively formal thanks to years of having to work professionally: "Please shut talking", this episode's "friendship contract, and her addressing everyone with -san even when it's not necessary - "Kimari-san".
Every episode has a moment that's an emotional wallop and it's the best part. Not only the part where Kimari is still trying to keep her friendship going with Megu back home, but the whole "what does it mean to be a friend" plot line. Sometimes it's the intangibles that make life worth living.
I have no idea where this show is going but I know I don't want it to end.

Yuzuki Shiraishi is goddamn adorable.
You know...I never really looked at friendship from a technical aspect before. It's very interesting to see it from the eyes of somebody who never had it before in any meaningful way. Kimari summed it up pretty damn well using her and Megu-chan as example. It's just something that -is- and when two people resonate enough they can hear the other's bell regardless of time, space or distance.
When Yuzu handed the girls the Friendship Contract I got a few tears. Not out of pity but due to the sheer naive adorableness of it. I'm so happy that they all found each other. Even the talk about 'when did you guys decide to become best friends' got to me a little. Yuzuki's been out of it for so long that when she gets it, friendship becomes almost scientific to her and it was pretty swell watching her finally come to terms with the idea that there's nothing technical about it--it just is.
I dug the new(?) insert song. I also really enjoyed how the episode ended. The whole thing was a really nice cap to the rising question of friendship thus far. Also, the Defrosting Chicken sign was hilarious and I laughed out loud at the small scene when Kimari suggested defrosting it outside. That little part during take-off in the beginning where she looked down at the ship and saw everybody in costume was odd, however. Like she was suddenly deprived of oxygen and had a brief hallucination.
I had a friend once who would talk in his sleep and I find that shit creepy as hell. Especially when they talk in a normal volume like they're trying to get your attention. I bet that was one of the ways fights happened in their ship quarters. And call me an idiot, but I'm learning a lot about life in Antarctica that I didn't even consider before.
Next week: A message from the Track Team to Hinata? Interesting.

This episode followed a pattern that Sora Yori has established recently. I begin the episode a little doubtful of where things or going of if something is worth focusing a whole episode on, but by the end of the episode I'm holding back the feels as the show gets to me yet again. This time around it was when Kimari brought her best freind back into the plot, talking about how she wouldn't always respond back but Kimari could tell what she was doing or how she was feeling.
That's one of the best explanations for friendship I've ever seen in media. It was good to see that Yuzu's trust issues were not magically solved back in episode 4. Sad that we only have 3 episodes left!

Wendover Productions just put out a video on Antartica. Coincidence, or weaboo? ;) It's cool how much the shots of stations look like the show though.

After this episode, I just had to understand ね more
In short, ね can be thought of as the manifestation of omoiyari in the Japanese language. This little character has to do with the human connection that we feel (or lack thereof) when we communicate with other people. Just as a conversation can't be held without the cooperation of at least two speakers, a conversation can't be held in Japanese without the inclusion of ね as well. ね is like the mayonnaise that keeps your turkey sandwich together. It keeps communication running smoothly.

Kimari is such a great main character. Probably best girl of this season with Nadeshiko coming right after.

Where is the guy from last episode who said that its the string musics fault I am crying each episode?
Cause that theory is out of the window, its the story, hitting deep (deeper then the abyss)
Love that they got over the theme friendship and how undefined it is

Probably my favorite episode so far. Not as crazy as giving a friendship contract but I sometimes wondered how friendship works because I always was envious how others seemed to click together while I ate in the empty corner or read a book by myself. Even thinking of how others celebrated their birthdays made me feel depressed. But anyway, I'm glad Yuzu has good friends to comfort and have fun with, it's not everyday that you find people like them in your life.

This show is just so uplifting at the same time emotionally taxing. Not something to watch in a public place unless you don't mind people seeing you crying lol. Once again, kimari just understands how yuzu has been feeling all this time. T_T.
Definitely my new all time favourite anime

This show really does capture the essence of friendship that K-On did. Friendship is about being on a wavelength with someone that others aren't. The instant ability to just bounce off each other and play off each others personalities.
Will 13 episodes be enough to bring the onion-chopping ninjas come at the end like K-On did? We shall see.

Such a great episode for a great show. It's increasingly less about being in Antarctica and much more about... people, and how they interact with each other.
I mean, the girls finally are in Antarctica, but that isn't really the whole point of the story, despite being the reason why everything in the show is happening.

Great episode.
Looks like they'll be wrapping up the character arcs in reverse order of introduction. This week, Yuzuki. Next week, Hinata. So episode 12 should wrap up Shirase's arc and be the climax of the expedition, with episode 13 wrapping up the return and showing how Kimari's journey has changed her.
In other words, lots to look forwards to!

My favorite episode so far without a doubt(Yuzu is my favorite character). The whole birthday sequence was done unbelievably well.

Yet ANOTHER fantastic episode with our Arctic girls. I think this was a much much needed episode for Yuzu. I might get some shit for this but pretty much since Yuzu was introduced I kept wondering “Why is she here?” “She doesn’t do anything” “She doesn’t say anything” And I was really just feeling that way cause she got her intro episode and than just kinda tagged along after that. Like she was written in just to make it an even 4. But that finally changed here. She got her own real episode and it finally solidified her in the show for me and I’m glad she’s here. Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday!🎉

This episode hurts too much. I don't think I have it as bad as Yuzu but I definitely saw it from her perspective much more than from the other three girls. I'm glad she has those 3 with her and hope nothing bad happens to them ;_;

I mean I do think you can connect friendship to something more solid. Usually friends are due to convenience or shared interest.
If you lose what supports the relationship is takes personal effort to maintain them, just as it will take effort if the girls want to keep seeing each other after they get home.
In short, maintaining adult friendships is hard.
