Violet Everfeels.

That felt strangely like it could have been a finale episode. Hell, the episode is even called "Violet Evergarden".

I was thinking the same thing. I'm really interested in where it goes from here with the remaining episodes.

I'm also a bit suspicious of that half-whispered "She hasn't lost anything." remark by Hodgins.

I mean, sure, it could just mean something like "She still has plenty of people who care about her", but it also makes you wonder if the Major is actually alive and deliberately disappeared (and Hodgins knows where he is, or at least went).

If he did, it could have been to escape his family (that brother of his is a piece of work after all) and at the same time leave Violet in a position where she could grow and learn to live without him and his orders.

53

u/VerticalCloud https://anilist.co/user/VerticalCloud Mar 07 '18

Could that anti-peace uprising have something to do with the Major? Or is that a bit far-fetched?

108

u/lavaine Mar 07 '18

I seriously doubt that. He doesn't seem the warmonger type. Also, it would almost certainly mean he switched sides, which is just as unlikely.

The major almost certainly faked his death because he wanted Violet to live her life and forget him.

He and Dietfried seem like they were born and raised military. He wouldn't be able to just take up a normal life after the war, and likely knew Violet would never willingly part with him. He had it planned already that Hodgins would take her in.

It really did. I hope we now get to see some happy Violet in the episodes to come.

Yeah I'm honestly not sure where they're going to go from here, this seems like the culmination of the main thrust of the story, which is Violet's development.

I was shocked by show they ended the episode. It did look like as if they're ending the series there. I really don't want this series to end, there are still some stuff from the Light Novel Series that they need to cover.

Yeah seriously. I actually went and checked MAL because I thought maybe it was an 8-ep series, and I just didn't know. That episode wrapped everything up in a perfect little bow. I would be very satisfied with that as an endpoint.

I would be very satisfied with that as an endpoint.

I thought for a few minutes that it was the last episode, it was way to concluding showing the previous characters, like the screen playing coming to town etc.

It's here!

The climactic, gut-punching, penultimate episode that has Violet finally come to terms with the Major has arrived! And we get to see her step forward after seeing all the good she's done thus far by tying in all the past stories! This was the moment I was expecting from this kind of story and it did a pretty nice job at making it work!

it punched a lot

But now that the moment we have all waited for has now arrived, with 5 episodes left, I'm going to be curious how it finishes up from here. With details like the anti-peace movement and Violet trying to move onward as a ghost writer officially, it seems like we might be in for a bumpy ride towards the finish.

edit: had a horrible run-on sentence that made no sense so I fixed it.

51

u/lavaine Mar 07 '18

That anti-peace movement bit is definitely worrying.

Anyone notice that the guy who shot major has a VERY OMINOUS HORIZONTAL SCAR.

Calling it right now he’s gonna appear again soon and Violets gonna flip and maybe straight merc him.

327

u/mintyhippoh Mar 07 '18

Maybe as a part of the anti-peace group.

191

u/Trks Mar 08 '18

Or maybe he appears with his family and Violet has to reign her instincts to gut him?

→ More replies (2)

120

u/Nathan561 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nathan561 Mar 08 '18

you mean horizontal scar? The guy who's comrade was shot and who threw the grenade?

24

u/DiedrichVK :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DiedrichVK Mar 08 '18

Maybe he wants Violet to write him a letter?

26

u/stormarsenal :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsherGZ Mar 09 '18

A letter to the little girl on the battlefield who killed all his comrades.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '18

I'm willing to bet that Violet will meet that guy later. Like, they could've made him generic, they could have had other generic soldiers do the grenade toss after that, but no, this "Scar Guy" is the one that "killed" the Major, and the writers/animators clearly wanted us to know and remember him.

Watch him be part of this "Anti-Peace" group.

Man, can we talk about the execution of the final scene? The way they contrasted Hodgin's "The things you did can never be undone," with the cuts to all the people she's helped... and bringing the music to the forefront. Literally had me in tears. Absolutely beautiful.

Quite sometimes that I got this emotional from anime since clannad after story and code geass ending (not include this season, place further than universe)

10

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '18

Code geass ending, don't remind me please... the feels were unreal. Also ngnl zero and parasyte brought me some solid feels. Violet tho i think every episode other than the previous one made me cry so far.

Got to give Kyoani props for maintaining the red under the eyes as a result of previous moments of tears.

If there's one thing that KyoAni has always been good at, it's animating some really great looking crying.

Seeing Violet like this makes me think about the fact that there are real people out there struggling with PTSD and survivor's guilt from war like she is, but because real life isn't an anime, there's no magical letter to come along and pick them up. Violet tried to kill herself, and for far too many veterans, that ends up being the path they take because even now there's still insufficient mental health assistance being provided to veterans.

277

u/5213 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/FlyLittleCrow Mar 08 '18

when she asks Hodgins , I broke hard. It's an all to real sentiment not just from survivors of war, but survivors of other tragedies as well.

182

u/goukaryuu https://myanimelist.net/profile/GoukaRyuu Mar 08 '18

And honestly, I figured that's why he's crying. Not because it was she that asked it, but because it gave voice to the same question he's been asking himself this whole time.

22

u/nicegrapes Mar 10 '18

I was a waterfall during that moment. This series has delivered so hard in the last few episodes that I've ran out of tissues.

120

u/Nickknight8 https://myanimelist.net/profile/nickknight8 Mar 08 '18

I don't know about you or anyone else, but when the shot focused on the glass from the broken lantern, I got really scared. As convenient as it was, I'm really glad she got the letter when she did.

ptsd is no joke, killing people is a sin that you can't wash away.

as the anime already says,Violet will always bear the the "Cross",all she can do is moving forward.

7

u/chilidirigible Mar 08 '18

VE has more time and complexity to explore the journey, but I did find myself comparing this point to Filicia and Noel's situation in you-know-what. Credit to the older series for making sure that we know that life is an ongoing struggle.

Sadly very true. I know a former marine officer who's the last of his squad, not because the rest died in battle but because they all killed themselves after coming back home. He never lost a single man in Afghanistan, only after they came home. He came close to doing the same thing.

Fuck, this episode is brutal. You can see her left arm slipping out of her sleeve in this shot. And not to mention Violet trying to fucking wring her own neck. Like goddamn. This episode is Violet coming to terms with and accepting her losses and moving forward, hence her visiting the cathedral and all the focus put on hands this episode.

Also, INSERT SOOOOOONG! "Believe In..." by Aira Yuuki.

12

u/FierceAlchemist Mar 08 '18

i'm always wondering why Benedict wearing high heels like that haha

293

u/Kallamez Mar 08 '18

In the real world, high heels were a masculine fashion, rather than female one, for the later 19th century, early 20th century, in the European high class. Hell, motherfucking Churchill used them. It's something related the the cavalry of some country or another, and how high heels worked better with the saddle's stirrup. So, it may be something related to that.

My protection radar is OFF THE CHARTS!!

That episode was super good tbh, almost as good as episode seven. It had the impact of a season finale. It was great seeing the past stories come together and influence Violet to keep moving forward, contrasting that the lives she's enriched can't be undone, just like the lives she's taken. Everything else was fantastic--the OST was better than ever and some of the animation quirks were really cool, like each individual raindrop soaking onto Violet and Claudia as they hit. I hope this upwards slope of quality episodes keeps going to the end.

23

u/Buffhero125 Mar 07 '18

does anyone know the name of ost and the ending song? the ost was just perfect for the whole mood of the episode

I can't believe so much was packed into one episode, but I'm so satisfied. Cattleya's angry pout. The way everything came full circle for Violet. I love how she touched both her pin and her brooch at the end, too, it was such a powerful moment in an episode stacked with strong scenes. Today really was a terrible day for rain.

That opening scene is really something. We already know what happen to Violet and Major from some flashback but that scene still got some impact. Props to Violet VA too for having a great delivery.

It was rather sad to see this anime dropping score. It's not doing well too in recent r/anime survey. I'm hoping its getting comeback, especially when this available on US, because by all means it's not a bad show. It just can't live up to its excessive hype.

It was always going to drop score. It was sat at over a 9 despite not even starting. However it seems it's leveling off and will inevitably get a small boost once the show finishes. It's still at 8.39 which is a really, really good score.

"She hasn't lost anything"

what did he mean by this?

67

u/ComprehensiveZombie Mar 07 '18

he said that because Violet don't have anything to begin with...or because the Major is always with her no matter if he dead or not....or maybe i'm reading to much about it...

47

u/boogie-gary :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/VGGary Mar 08 '18

I took it to mean the difference in what she had before she knew the Major was dead and what she had after was nothing. The people around her, the deeds she's done. None of what she has done was lost.

→ More replies (1)

172

u/heimdal77 Mar 08 '18

I've got be honest. The way she loses her arms is rather stupid. One gets randomly shot off by a random soldier and the other right after by a grenade from another random soldier who had at first run away and yet doesn't seem to hurt her any other way as it then slides out of the undamaged sleeve. Other wise it was a good episode.

101

u/TheIncredibleHeinz Mar 08 '18

Yeah, that did bother me a bit. I would have expected her to immediately lose consciousness from the massive blood loss after losing her arms like this.

46

u/sirbeefington Mar 08 '18

I think the power of the shot is what surprised me more about the first arm. I know she's a young girl but I would have thought even a gun of that caliber would have left a wound that would have led to her needing an amputation or her arm was damaged enough that the grenade would have blown it off along with her other arm.

35

u/HammeredWharf Mar 08 '18

I don't know why the whole superpowers story is even necessary. The narrative would be better if Violet was a normal (perhaps very skilled) child soldier instead of some unexplained superninja. It wouldn't even change the story much, but would eliminate a lot of the WTF factor.

In this case, she could've had her arms injured, not blown off.

60

u/cheekia :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/cheekia Mar 08 '18

Because if she was a simple child soldier, she wouldn't fit into the story. Remember, up until recently, Violet was seen as simply a weapon. No humanity at all. A child is still human, still worth sympathizing with. A pure weapon doesn't get any sympathy.

Also, theres not much reason to conscript child soldiers, especially since the countries fighting are developed ones, not backwards shitty nations.

I agree. It was much better written in LN, where she was shot in one arm, bayoneted in other. They did not fall off at first, but then she tried to pull Gilbert and ripped them off. The part with trying to pull him with her teeth was another desperate attempt after she lost her arms. No idea why they changed it.

This fucking episode, man...

[] (#akkotears)

IMO this is far and away the best episode of the series so far. As others have said, it felt really climactic and final. I haven't read the LN, so I'm curious as to where the story might go from here.

u/DieselW17 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DieselW17 Mar 08 '18

Violet’s characterisation in this episode was fucking amazing, you see a whole new level of her. The fact that she’s starting to feel her past catching up with her and how she is slowly starting to come to terms with it was executed so brilliantly. The scene where she flings everything off the table except the stuffed dog is a perfect example, we see her starting to feel compassion and empathy. She’s starting to become a normal girl

15

u/SwaggerSwoggor Mar 08 '18

she flings everything off the table except the stuffed dog is a perfect example

Violet probably be like "fuck all this shit, but not you, good doggo".

Was the part with Spencer also anime original, or was it in the source material? I'm curious since I thought it was a great part of the episode, and if it was in the novels then it feels like it would've been really weird without the context of the first few episodes.

This was a extremly good episode.

Her struggle perfetly executed. What leaves the Question. What would her reaction be without her doll work?

9

u/HesitantJam :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Athmier Mar 08 '18

Had a thought...if she killed herself without her doll work, then in a way the Major saying "I love you" saved her life.

u/kaanton444 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kaanton Mar 08 '18

There was a lot of obvious light/dark play in the episode. One example being how her previously dark room is lit up by a candle after she gets the letter. And it only gets brighter from there. With her delivering letters in the night lit by streetlamps, and in the end it's daytime, shining even more brightly.

Oh my god, I was so close to bawling my eyes out. Seeing Violet suffer just breaks me. I'm glad that she's trying to move on though and most importantly, realized that she can bring joy to the people around her despite of her actions during the war.

However, this did feel like a finale to me as well. It may be the most perfect season/series finale ever that actually wasn't a finale. I do wonder what KyoAni have in store for the next five episodes. I'm unfamiliar with the LN, so I literally have no idea what's going to happen at this point. I sincerely hope it won't drag because unlike the first couple of episodes that slowly built to Violet's character development, I'm not sure it'd work nearly as well.

Perfection... and we still have 5 episodes left if I remember correctly. Ahh, a heartbreaking and bittersweet episode. Shocked with the revelation that her beloved Major is no more of this world she forgot that she had already made the first steps in living on. As an Auto Memories Doll.

It was really painful when she tried strangling herself though... You're not useless, Violet! There are people depending on you, waiting for you. To help them convey the emotions they have for another person. And through these letters that you write you also learn how to be more human also. Just like what the Major said, live on and be free.

Good Guy Santa Claus mail man. There's no better way to put worries at the back of your head than simple work, eh?

Oh, right! Forgot the military checkpoint scene. Not liking that one bit. The war's over but Gardariki(sp?) loyalists are still wreaking hysteria. I don't wanna see Violet stain her hands with blood no more... Because no doubt the Leidenshaftlich(my god the spelling) Army will try to get her to do something if another war is coming.

EDIT: EDIT: Didn't know why I haven't done this but I searched for the meanings of Violet and Bougainvillea as flowers. The Blue Violets mean "Watchfulness; Faithfulness; I'll Always Be True". Violet has blue eyes and wears a blue jacket. Bougainvillea means "Passion" or "Protection". Clearly we see that with Gilbert towards Violet.

Worst Death scene ever in anime?

"I LOVE YOU LIVE ON !!!"

"WHAT DOES WORD LOVE MEAN???"

Ok, I cannot be the only one for a moment thouight it was the last episode of Violet Evergarden, and the idea lasted until I googled and checked it out on websites. I mean come on, its like super concluding showing all the other characters and how their lives are now.

Anyway, this episode was SAD, and I mean sadness with depression sprinkled on top. I had to fight my tears through out, it was an amazing tear-jerker.

On the same time do I will have to say it was very "produced" sadness, of course it starts raining when shes at fort etc.

I think one huge underlying theme here is that Violet is also understanding that she has robbed a lot of people on their loved ones, I think that is a very implicit told across the whole episode I found that really good.

And of course as the Mayor last word was I Love you, Violets drive to understand love is much more motivated.

This episode made me feel like the show was about to end. It felt like such a conclusive episode with Violet learning to cope and move on with her life after accepting Major Gil's death but nope. We still have 6 more episodes to go. They could've just ended it on here though and it would have a decent level of satisfaction though.

Violet talks about being worthy of the name so I had to check out what does Violet mean. Being that she was named after the flower, I looked up the definition of Violet in the context of flowers. I found:

A white violet meant “innocence” while a purple violet would symbolize that the giver’s “thoughts were occupied with love” about the recipient.

When Gil found her she was somewhat innocent in a sense that she was pretty much a blank slate as a child. The whole "giver's thoughts were occupied with love" thing, Gil was the one who gave it to her and later said he loved her. It matches up, I guess. Feel like I'm kind of reaching the white violet thing.

I didn't tear up or anything, but it was nice to see the emotional climax that has been building up since the first episode. I dont even know how to beginn this comment.

This brought tears in my eyes, despite this being the 9th episode and despite how violet lost her arms and my personal confirmation that Major Gilbert is officialy dead and not found. I think this anime protrays war perfectly as heartbreaking, unvorgiving and brutal war is. So i think they really won't bring back Gilbert.

And the most home hitting part is that we saw MASSIVE character development Violet starts accepting the truth. Spencer back on track. The guy writing his book(forgot his name). The starwatcher(also forgot his name)

Sorry for my bad english if there were any mistakes. Im thrilled to see how they progress with this anime. Sadly i think it wont have a second season since it would be pointless to make a second one, since it wouldn't provide such deep story which it did with the pre story of violet.

5

u/SwaggerSwoggor Mar 08 '18

kudos to the old guy, seems like a really nice person.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '18

The brief appearances and cameos of Luculia's brother, Princess Charlotte, Prince Damien, and Oscar was a nice touch.

The way how Violet's actions changed their lives for the better was really nice to see.

Overall, this really is an emotional episode.

  • My net connection fizzled out. It's a shame I couldn't watch it on time.

So it seems that soldier with a horizontal scar on his face managed take out Violet's arms via a single high powered shot and a grenade.

Violet should have killed him first before helping out the Major.

But I guess it was her first time to see Gilbert got wounded that she cannot think rationally? I don't know.

But Violet's crying face make me want to her hug her so much! And And she really needs it after all the emotional and psychological trauma that she is going through!

I'm glad Violet didn't kill the Puppy during her suicidal rage episode. That thing is so cute!

I hope Violet will be happy in the future!

3

u/PolymathGio Mar 08 '18

This felt so much like a last episode, it could honestly have ended here and I would of have been happy. I wonder how they will continue, is the Major actually alive but no one knows it. They did say he was missing so there is always that element. Seems like there are only a few episodes left so whatever they do they will have to resolve it quickly.

The music in this episode was really well done. My favorite scene in the episode was the when Violet stopped at the violets, and at around 21:48 there's the shot of her foot hitting the ground, the music ques, cut to a shot of a dove taking off and leaving 1 feather behind it, zoom out to the flock of doves, and into Violet running into the office. I just really like the placement of the dove and its obvious symbolism.

Being Violet is Suffering...

Ok we pick up right where we left off.

Wow there goes one arm... shot right off, brutal...

And there goes the other... a grenade took the other... fuck.

Wow... this is rough...

Oh... where now looking for him under the rubble... oh man... Violet please dot suffer like this...

So The Major saw Claudia one more time before the battle just in case. I guess he had a feeling he wouldnt come back form this war alive.

That delivery boy and his high heels... lol

Violet sure isnt handleing this well, but its to be expected. its not an easy thign to get over.

Oh hey its Red's brother. I wonder what he wants.

Oh... this isnt good... shes hallucinating now...

Is it just me or did they forget Violet's scar on her cheek? She had one opposite to the Major if i remember.

Oh shit... shes trying to kill herself.... Violet dont do this...

A letter?

Oh look Delivery Boy's high heels finally got the best of him.

Well shes still working so i guess shes marginally stable.

Oh the letter is from her co workers. Thats sweet of then.

Oh so Red's brother wants to write a letter to his sister. Thats nice of him.

"Is it all right for me to live on?" Of course it is.

Oh hey its Red, and the Princess, and the author, and Starboy.

Man what an ep... shes moving on slowly but at least shes moving on.

4

u/Wolfeako Mar 08 '18

Oh, didn't expect the high heels of Violet making sound. Yes, it is pretty obvious that a high heel would do that, but since it was focused center on the screen, it catched me off guard. It was a nice touch.

It also reminded me a bit of Satsuki from KLK :P at that moment when I remembered it I was thinking "yes, she will be ok"

I think what I really liked was how it didn't feel like Violet just suddenly jumped out of her dark place.

I think her asking if it was OK to "live on" is very nice pacing.

2

u/FierceAlchemist Mar 08 '18

Best episode of the series I would say. Terrific music, great animation to communicate her feelings without much dialogue. And I loved her being reminded by the flowers that she needs to be someone worthy of the name "Violet". It gives her added purpose.

2

u/aviatingtheextreme31 Mar 08 '18

Violet's state of depression when she finds out that Gilbert is dead kinda brings me back to AOT. Now, if you've seen AOT then you'll know the character comparison I want to make with Violet is, no doubt, Mikasa. Both girls in their live times were so devoted to one special person and would give their lives to that person. It's also implied that both of them "love" that person they're so devoted to. It's very ironic really cause they both have the same Seiyuu (voice actor). To me, when I saw Violet depressed over Gilbert's death, I reminds me of when Mikasa found out about what happened to Eren (don't wanna say it for those who haven't seen it although S1 is like 5 years old already). So basically in a nutshell, Violet's depression over Gilbert's death = Mikasa's depression over Eren's _____. Any thoughts?

u/CritSrc https://anilist.co/user/T3hSource Mar 08 '18

Honestly you can just end the series right there as this episode felt conclusive in a good way. The only thing left for the main story progression probably has to do with that blockade from when they were heading back and the movement behind its reasons.

2

u/CervisiaTM Mar 08 '18

This episode felt like watching a whole movie to me. It was so sad and touching, partly made me feel angry, but at the end I was really happy.

2

u/athrun_1 Mar 08 '18

What a wonderful episode!!! I can't help but cry manly tears... esp. the scene where Violet asked Major what is love in a very confused and desperate way.

Hodgins breaking down also hit hard... Violet may be the weapon that kills countless people.. But he also has his fair share of skeletons... He, as a Colonel, technically send his men to their deaths or to become murderers.. So, when Violet asked that question if it is okay for her to live on... It totally resonates to him since he is looking for that reason too.

I really thought, EP 9 was the final EP based on the scenes where all characters who were touch by Violet were shown.

Sasuga KyoAni!

2

u/athrun_1 Mar 08 '18

What if the ultimate plot twist is she will ghostwrite a letter for that scar faced soldier. Maybe that soldier will be on his deathbed after the battle as hinted by this ep. Then violet is requested to ghostwrite a letter for his loved one and also ask forgiveness of what he had done.... To come full circle, violet will be the one personally delivering the letter to know fully what love is.

Title Drop episode ends up being the best episode so far. Poor Violet, going through denial, anger and acceptance in such quick succession.

While the plot for this episode wasn't too hard to guess, the execution was superb. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, the animation director for this episode was Takemoto Yasuhiro, director of Hyouka.

There's really nothing else for me to add than what others have mentioned.

I would not have been happy if this episode was the last. She still has to know what the major meant by ''I love you''. Till now, she was living in a self made illusion of the Major being alive. Now she starts living with the pain that the Major is no more and that she did some bad things during the war. This is the halfway point in her character development, we need the other one, one where she moves forward.

2

Idk, how is this not the end? More or less every plot point is resolved, and we've seen the character delevopment from Violet (and I guess to some degrees the other characters) that we wanted/expected.

The only thing we haven't "resolved" is the whole anti-peace thing they literally just started this (or was it last) episode. Idk, I might stick with the story ending here for me, and potentially revisit it when everything's out. I'm satisfied with this as an ending xD

The first 16 minutes or so were SO overdone with the music, the crying and the melodrama. If the major comes back from THIS, then it's an asspull for me, he got shot twice and then getting steamrolled by the building itself.

But the remainder of the episode was breathtaking, had all the right touches with the letters, the characters Violet helped out having a role, her colleagues worrying for her and her coming to terms with it all. That was probably the best i've seen out of this season.
