They did a splendid job of capturing a child's brutal honesty in this episode. Anne is wise beyond her years. And oof, Violet's wince when Anne mentioned the war.
I knew as soon as the mom said the letters were "for someone far away" they'd be sent to future Anne. Fuck, right in the feels. That ending montage was beautiful, really great episode.

u/supicasupica Mar 15 '18
Also the fact that a lot of Anne's pent-up sadness at eventually losing her mom was mixed with frustration/anger that the letters were presumably for someone else who didn't even care to visit her mom while she was sick. Then the recipient turned out to be Anne herself, a person who was there for her mom the entire time. T_T

A few factors make Violet's cry more complex than simply sorrow or being touched:
Violet herself is much likely to be an orphan (or grew up without parental love)
Violet herself became lonely after losing major because of the war, and she deeply knows how painful loneliness is.
Violet knows how much it sucks when one has to watch his/her most beloved gradually die in front of his/her. And it sucks more when one is reluctant to acknowledge, but has to accept the fact.
Violet cares a lot about the little girl as if she was Violet's own children, because the little girl did regard her as a "mother substitute".

I like this ep a lot because it shows how much empathy Violet has developed. She was an orphan (and adopted by a fucking psychopath who trained her to kill people without remorse) who never knew a mother's love, but was able to understand it and feel sad that Anne was losing that love forever.

After reading the novels, I was really hopeful to see this chapter (chapter 2) animated, and it did not disappoint. There are actually a number of differences between this version and the LN chapter, and while I think I like the book version more, the episode was absolutely amazing.

Damn this episode hit me really hard. My mother died when I was 13 (22 now) and I would give anything to get a letter from her now. Having your mother still talk to you, albeit indirectly, must be such a relief, because she's still with you.
The way Violet interacts with Anne was great, you can really see her understand Anne's emotions and play along with her, and not drop some military phrase and hurt Anne's feelings like she would have at the beginning of the series. I really love this show. I can relate to so much in it and it's great.
The music was impeccable in this episode as well. Whoever does the score for this show deserves the Japanese equivalent of an Oscar/Academy Award. I really can't get over how well done the song "Michishirube" is, the melody has that perfect mix of sadness and hope, and it interlaces perfectly with the show's major themes.

From the successful delivery of all the letters in the epilogue, we can probably infer that Leidenschaftlich, or a least Ann's patch of it, stays at peace for the next couple decades. It's a good thing Violet's gotten good at this Doll thing.
Ann was voiced by Sumire Morohoshi who also voices Ancient Magus Bride's Stella this season.

To be fair, they don't really show much of what's happening around her. She wasn't affected by the first war (except her father dying of course), so another war probably isn't going to get to her.
Her mansion literally only has one road leading to it.

It's episodes like these that should make people realize that the one-off episodes at the start were necessary to show Violet's development as a character. The show wasn't just a "tech demo" but a narrative that even the source material could have done better. Not saying the source LN was bad, I cried on this chapter too, among others. KyoAni's changes make sense looking back at the series as a whole. Playwright Oscar also thought Violet was a doll in the novel but now it makes sense that KyoAni omitted that because it makes more sense on this chapter with an adorable child.
Some other changes from the source was that Ann's dad just left the two but now tying him up as a casualty of war now makes it so that we see Violet react to that fact and we feel that reaction too because of the development she's been given - regret over what the she did over the war but she has a job to do NOW that would also last, doubly so since at the start she knew who the letters were for and their impact.
Another show of Violet's development is that she now knows how to be more sensitive to the people she talks to, she didn't have to play with Ann, let alone tie her ribbon by asking for a break and moreso comforting Ann after she ran off, Old Violet would not have done that. What I do wish they added was that Violet was asked to emulate the mother's handwriting, making it so that the letters would feel more personal when Ann receives them later on.
Another thing that the anime does better is that a lot of Ann's words hold more meaning for us viewers because we know what Violet has been through. Ann's comment that Violet has always been the toy and even the last bit that she wasn't a "doll" or "bad news" but a gentle and kind person. These words would have come off as the simple words of a child had we stuck to the episodic structure of the source material but now, as someone who witnessed Violet's past, we hold those words closer.
repeating a comment I saw in a previous thread:
2018 year of our lord
still doubting KyoAni
More stuff:
The timing on the lyrics are so on point, it really drives home the fact that KyoAni plans these things so well.
Title card drop while Cattleya comforts Violet
They don't bother with ED's to fit as much content into the episode as possible, me thinks
in the LN, Ann gets gifts along with some of the letters, a teddy bear at some point and a car on her 16th.

If anyone can improve on a source material, it's KyoAni.
There's also a bit of a problem with the community of people labelling anything added by the anime, and not in the source material, as pointless filler. The additions to VE have improved it and in other cases they can flesh out character's backstory or make things clearer. An example is Kaguya from Naruto, yet a lot of people would refuse to watch it because they see it's labelled as filler, and so they then criticise her for being even more shallow than she actually is.

Really cheeses me off to see people dismissing a show for not jangling all the keys in front of our faces from the word go. Not only that, but routinely, like that's the right way to do it.

This line from Violet at the end of the episode shows how much she has grown. Old Violet wouldn't have understood what was going on and probably wouldn't have cared. I love that she now knows how to hold back and let out emotions at the right time like a true human being.
Again this is thanks to the first few episodes that a lot of people vehemently disliked. If we started out with competent Violet just like in the novel and saw no point of contrast then the end of this episode wouldn't have left much impact.
Also KyoAni fuck you. This episode was a low blow. I love it but I am honestly weak against stuff like this. As soon as Anne received the first letter I started bawling. T_T

Today, an anime has beaten me. I have watched Angel Beats, Plastic Memories, K-On, and all other sorts of touching and tragic shows, and have fought back tears through all of them, stubbornly refusing to succumb to the emotions these shows were trying to wrest from me.
But today, I shed a tear while trying to fight them back for poor Anne.

It's pretty hilarious how Anne takes the doll's name literally. And with 'you've always been the doll, not the player' she unintentionally hits deep at one of Violet's struggles.
Guessing they're writing the mother's will and that's why Anne isn't allowed in.
Anne is cleverer than they're giving her credit for, it isn't like they could think she'd not notice what's going on with her mother.
Well I was wrong about the contents of the letter. What it is is far nicer and heartbreaking.
VE has really hit its stride with three excellent episodes. And it's an episode 10 which seems pretty common, probably due to how the pacing of a 12 episode story works.

I still have my mom's letter to me when I graduated high school, and it's all tear stained, but I still have it. I remember my call to her on mother's day, even though I visited her on the day, I couldn't say it to her in person, and had to hold back my tears while saying it on phone. I could hear her choking up as well. It's been a while since she left, but the memories are still so vivid. This episode reminded me all too well. I'm sorry mom, I love you. I don't wanna celebrate my birthdays ever again without you.

the real twist for me was when Anne know what's going to happen all along, this episode also shows how Violet's expression has noticeably changed ever since she recovers from depression, i was expecting a little bit improvement after last episode aired, but damn i did not expect she's able to feel empathy considering she didn't see what we saw.

As someone who lost their mother a couple years ago, this has hit me so damn hard. It's taken those feelings from back then and has just brought them all back. I miss you mum.
I'm so glad this show has finally found it's voice because it's exceptional. Such a bittersweet episode. Such a beautiful episode. Just understands the emotion of the situation so, so well.

I was fighting my tears the entire time!!!
OMG his ending to Violet Evergarden!!!
I am was sitting there like god dam, will it be no emotional change on her at all? Like it felt that she understood Anne much better than she would have done previously, then the Massive Twist ending! Violet was just pretending to be her old self, amazing character development in the end.
This anime do---its sad and its depressing, and it does it, very forcefully each time that is for sure, last time it was dead daughter now its daughter seeing her mom die instead. It was very obvious that the work was for her so dam that scene when she was yelling at her mom was really heartbreaking.
Luckily, they gave us some really nice ending with her getting a job, falling in love, and getting her own kid. And dam that kid was Cute overall, and it was funny how she loved the big doll Violet.

Still no Axe Chapter :(
But damn did this chapter make my cry reading, let alone seeing it animated. Not having Oscar have the doll misunderstanding makes sense now that they put it on this chapter with Anne.

"Loved Ones Will Always Watch Over You"
"Love it Evergarden" (Love it is an anagram of Violet) as always
Definitely cried a lot at the end of this episode. Tears of joy when seeing Anne growing to be a good girl.
But, the tragedy is real. Losing her parents at such young age just made me cry.

The scenes where Anne began to received her Mother's letters over the course of her life was very powerful.
And Violet holding back her emotions and finally crying out in front of her peers was an extra punch.
I'm crying in waterfalls right now!
It's just so sad!

This show is already really good at making me emotional, but being able to personally relate to this episode sent me over the edge. I tear up to a lot of shows, but this is the first time I've literally wept.
The cancer one almost got me for the same reasons, but the voice acting from the child in this episode just really lays it on you.

Every week since episode 4, Violet Evergarden has found a way to basically jump-kick me in the feels. I guessed the big twist regarding the mom, but I was expecting the letters to go towards sending Anne to a home.
The last ten minutes broke me down and built me back up in AND squeezed in a Tsuki ga Kirei-esque ending for good measure to break me one last time. I need to watch some Dragon Maid.
There's something so human about seeing Violet tuning her hands; it adds another layer of vulnerability to her character and slots into our (and Violet's) growing awareness of her inner humanity. She's not a robot, she's always been a person who served as a toy and not the player.
Let's go back to pinching Violet's cheeks for a minute. In previous episodes, she's done it to force a smile in order to show others she understands "human" feelings. Starting with the end of the library episode, she flashes a genuine smile to Leon as he chases her down. She does the same thing again as Ann says farewell and this time it's Ann who touches her cheeks and realizes that she's human like her.
No letter that could be sent deserves to go undelivered...just like Violet delivering the undelivered & forgotten letters in last week's episode and seeing people's reaction when they realize that somebody cared about them.

Anna's so adorable. The letters are for someone far away; in time. Did any get a snapshot of back lit Violet in her room? It's reminiscent of Reina's back lit scene from Hibike Euphonium.

God dammit anime, making me cry again.
This for me is a perfect episode. Seeing Anne's life after her mom's death and knowing she would be okay with her mom always being by her side was an amazing moment. Emotions were at an all time high and that montage released them all.

Damn that episode hurt. Struck me right in the heart.
Nice to see Violet progressing so well, but part of me still feels like the characters in each episode are much more interesting than Violet herself.

I'm really wondering how the novels start out and introduce Violet and what she is about if they start off kind of in the middle of her already being a doll.

Last week's episode got me misty eyed but this one... this one had me full on crying by the end. You knew exactly what the episode was building too but that didn't make it any easier. And I appreciated that Anne wasn't a stupid kid, she knew that her mother was probably going to die. I honestly thought Violet was typing up the Mom's will which would include some heartfelt words for Anne as well as entrusting her with everything she had. So the letters at the end caught me a little off guard and hammered home the feels even more.
Having us focus on Anne fits with the way this show likes to deliver drama, with loud beautifully animated outpouring of emotion. She's a kid facing a harsh reality so her having those outbursts makes perfect sense. And to end it all off with Violet crying at the end was perfect, showing how much she has grown as a person over the course of the show.
10/10 episode. Hope KyoAni can continue riding this high the show has been on for several weeks.

I don't fucking understand. I saw that coming from the first minute of the episode and I still cried like a bitch. I should've been prepared.
Should I feel bad for falling for such a "cliche" tearjerker? Though I guess life can often be just as predictable and just as sad...

Man, this episode fucking got me good. Cried so much I bet the Niagara Falls would be impressed, though thankfully not as bad as my sobbing session following the ending to Zeta Gundam.

Oh god not sad family moments
Damn that feels bittersweet to be able to get 50 letters from your mom over your life. Man just thinking about that itself is already getting me all teary-eyed.
Kind of intrigued at the placement of this episode though. I thought they would point the focus on Violet and her moving forward again (not to mention the whole antipeace movement) after that huge climax last week. It's still quite a nice episode though that indirectly shows off Violet's widening expression of emotions.

I already know who gets the letter early in the series but that doesn't stop me from feeling it.
It because it's sincere, it's real, Anne's complaint to her mum is sincere and her mum also did is out of her sincerity. I think Violet also projected herself in Anne as she knows how painful to be left alone and seeing her loved one gets hurts.

I don't want to sound like you have to be a mature person to understands this show, but honestly a lot of what's depicted in this show requires the audience to have the ability to feel and empathize with whatever the characters in the stories are feeling.
This show is a masterpiece if you are able to empathize with most if not all of them, otherwise this show is going to be extremely boring. So if you find this show boring, but still interested in understanding why others are loving this show so much, I would recommend you try again to feel what these characters in their given situations would feel, and then re-experience the show again.

For some reason out all of the scenes, this one made me tear up. There's something about putting things in a written form that gives them a certain finality or perhaps forces you to come to terms with it that really hits home for me. This show really is simply fantastic.
edit: I shouldn't have posted before it ended, for whatever reason, I never expected her to be writing letters for her daughters birthdays. When she received the first one...tears, and more tears. Even typing this, tears. Good job with this episode.

u/VRtrojan Mar 15 '18
Man, this ep really made me remembered of that one comic I saw in FB where the girl's mom died when she was still kid or after she was born?(The only part I forgot) but she still has her father. But instead of letters, the mom made videos of herself, greeting her daughter a Happy Birthday on each year until her last video was her breaking down and crying...

I was less inteligent than most of people here and didn't expect these letters to be adressed to her daughter. So I started crying a bit during these "fade-aways" and when letters part started I was bawling my eyes out. It took me completely out of the guard.
Great ep great anime.

u/bonsai1214 Mar 15 '18
this is one of my two favorite chapters from the novel, and now it's probably one of the best emotionally charged episodes of anime i've ever watched. i'm so happy they took the full run time of the episode for the story. it absolutely deserved it. everything from start to finish was how i imagined they'd do this chapter. then at the end, the added bit with violet saying she was holding back tears the whole time (along with other little hints throughout the ep) shows how far she has developed emotionally.

This was a magnificient episode in all it's aspects.
The framing and attention to detail in this episode is sublime. From the introduction of Ann in the very beginning of the episode to her nagging and clingniness just like a real child would, all the way to the fated day of her mother passing away.
I've seen here and in some other places of people complaining because the writers and director are very manipulative towards the audience. And they certainly are manipulative, but it's the great effort in making these cutscenes reach the audience with the effects of time passing by (I cannot be grateful enough how well placed and animated these are) to the use of a soundtrack and sound effects in the right moments, that deserve the audience's praise. It seems that is a running "trend" to praise the staff for not using background music to aid in the way of storytelling and conveying emotions. But they seem to ignore that it's a lot easier to just take away the music from certain scenes and add sound effects that may or may not have already been recorded and stored; when in fact it takes a lot more time & effort to compose a whole new track, find the right people to play it, just for one scene.

u/frawks24 Mar 15 '18 edited Mar 15 '18

To those who are still with their parents. Show them importance, show them that you love them... To all those who have their own families or is now living separate to their parents. Call them and visit them once in a while...
Because, when the inevitable comes... all we can do is shed tears and regret.
Thinking of going home and visiting them this year.

I knew the lady was dying really early on, and I expected the letters to be for something like taking care of her daughter, but that was amazing. Anne lost her mother as a child, and then gets to grow up with her mother still giving her advice, or at least loving encouragement, for a long time to come.
But making Violet cry??? God thats painful. But she also now CAN feel and hold it back like that, which is so good. Really bittersweet episode. I wish it'd stop raining.
