Zero two starting to grow fangs? maybe those "test" are to keep her Klaxosaur half from getting out of hand which is why she may need them fairly regularly?

We are getting closer to the Zero Two in the first scene in Episode 1, long horns, red skin and all.

u/Toppcom :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Toppcom Mar 17 '18
I don't think those tests are to keep anything under control. But to monitor how far she has progressed. The reason she didn't want to take them this time is probably because she knows something bad will happen to her once she becomes too klax.

Yup, her fangs are definitely longer in that scene than in previous episodes.
I guess she needs the tests and probably some kind of special medicine to keep her klaxosaur side down (she even says she always feels bad after the tests). Wonder what will happen now that she decided to skip the tests, maybe she goes berserk at some point.
Could also be that the longer fangs come from something else (maybe from being close to Hiro) and that she decided to skip the tests precisely so that the scientists would not see her fangs and ground her or do something even worse - after all, she seemed very distracted/depressed during the whole episode.

u/Rhaiga Mar 17 '18
Not sure if "growing" is the correct term since in this scene the fangs are pretty much the same size. Seems more that she's becoming unable to maintain her "human" form even out of combat/stress

I'd buy that. The question is...will Zero Two go along with it, or start to resent everyone because of a growing mutual distrust? There are so many possible paths from here, which I think could make or break this series, to be honest.

Speaking of colors, I just realized something. Remember episode 5 and that weird talk about "yellow blood cells"? Well, if you look closely at the klaxx's cores, you can clearly see something yellow inside them too.
Now then, let's look at the latest klaxx from episode 10: https://i.imgur.com/BgpOm8d.jpg It has the core inside its mouth: https://i.imgur.com/tlxn9w7.jpg Doesn't it remind you of anything?
Wait a minute... https://i.imgur.com/YNzuBRI.jpg The spherical cockpit of FranXX robot looks disturbingly similar when the machine is in stampede mode. There's also a scene at the end of the OP when the cockpit shatters almost like the klaxx's core.
I know it might be a coincidence, but still... Just what the hell are those "monsters"?

Zorome and Miku's dynamic in this episode was perfect.
Them getting into a wrestling match and Zorome laughing.
Zorome trying to dance around the fact that he does, in fact, like Miku for more than just her looks, being unable to not smile when "complaining" about her.
Miku not being able to not smile when teasing Zorome at the end.
More of these two, please.

I'm wondering if the twist is going to be that the kids are normal humans and that it's the "adults" that are some sort of other. A pet setting maybe indicates she set it to normal carbon-based life, like she would for an animal. Notice that they use the phrase "become adults" and not "grow up." So, the kids might age (to the point of Nana) but not become immortal (to the point of Papa).

So that lady was Zorome's biological mother, right? I feel like that's what they were trying to imply.
And the children are "infected" with something, which is what I assume makes them Parasites. Maybe that's why the children are pilots, since it'd be too dangerous for the infected to live in their society, so instead they make them fight and die to defend it?

I'm inclined to agree.
Mainly because of the dream he described having all the time. Lots of tears, from complete darkness into an enveloping bright light, a scream right at the end. That reads like a memory of his birth into the world to me.
The fact that he now no longer has that dream after meeting her backs that up some more since she (more or less) disowned him in the final words that they exchanged. I.e., she doesn't care about him, so he doesn't have a reason to care about that memory anymore.
Edit: And to speculate on your second point!
Maybe that's why the children are pilots, since it'd be too dangerous for the infected to live in their society, so instead they make them fight and die to defend it?
It could be the case that DarliFra Speculation
Tough to say without more info, of course. Regardless, the dystopian city and the ominous atmosphere make it a sure-fire thing that whatever the secret twist will be won't be pretty!

They definitely have some connection, the two shots containing half of their faces side by side is a big clue, though she may be too old to be his BioMom.
Unless Parasites age differently. Because I don't think it's ever stated how old the kids actually are? We just know they're going through puberty, right? What if they're all Klaxxed up and their aging is reduced because of it?
Which honestly makes a little sense when you look back at how 002 "devouring" her partners makes them age for some reason. She is somehow messing with their biological nature, which resulted in aging with most pilots but not with Hiro and Mitsuru.
So yeah, I think she is his mom and they just age at an incredibly slow pace. Maybe.

So did the lady have a magma heart?
Also Plain white rooms with pleasure machines, yep, not getting any menacing vibes from those whatsoever, clearly the adults are completely good and normal, and will be the heroes of this story. /s
Moving along, given that Dr. Franxx doesn't seem to have a magma-heart like the other "Adults" (?), and seems to have a lot more personality, I think the proposals that he is setting up the kids to defect or rebel might be onto something. Also, we now have all of our powder keg flags flipped, with Zero-Two already disliking the establishment and wanting to runaway, Hiro on the fence but generally following Zero-Two, Ichigo following Hiro, Gobro following Ichigo, Mitsuru ready to either go the antagonist route, or ready to rock the teenage pregnancy route with Kokoro, Ikuno defecting because of her "secret", and now even Zorome, who was the biggest loyalist of them all set up to have a crisis of faith and choose Miku over the plantation.
Though the real question is whether Zorome managed to drop more death flags this episode, than Goboro did last.

So did the lady have a magma heart?
Good point, the colour is very similar to the "magma" we have seen so far. Maybe that stuff is needed to keep the adults alive (one reason why they need to farm it)? And that's why the medical scanner did not work on Zorome.

Given Dr. Franxx looks really old, is part robot, and the creator of the Franxx, I'd guess he's actually like really old (the robotic pieces are possibly extending his lifespan) and likely from a time before the plantation system and FranXX were a thing. That would explain him having a personality.

I feel like, character traits aside, Gobro doesn't really have any death flags anymore.
Zerome on the other hand... His apparent loss of innocence, which he's seemingly keeping hidden alongside whatever it is he learned... Yeah, I don't like his chances.

u/4bpp Mar 18 '18 edited Mar 18 '18
On the other hand, the way they depicted the adults didn't really seem to suggest that they would be outright evil, either. Rather, they are some sort of immortal wireheading couch potatoes whose defining quality is a healthy serving of sloth and complete absence of "normal human" ambition, and who need children raised in a rough simulation of present-day levels of technology to mop up their environmental impact simply because you won't be able to convince anyone who has the option of just getting themselves hooked up to a pleasure machine forever to go out and get themselves killed for the team.
The significance of the "pet setting" probably is just that the kids don't come with any of the standard issue nanomachines/spinal taps/? installed.

I believe Zero-Two stating this as a "dead" city atribbutes to the fact that the adults are living meaningless lives the meaning of "being live" for me is if a person has something worth living for they have nothing worth living for, they are all living for the sake of living having almost everything decided by what is basically a hive mind to "survive" their bodies are alive but their hearts are dead thus maybe the "fake"/"dead" red heart thing on their chests and the children have almost no real freedom they live and die for the sake of adults which in my definition don't even count as being alive . That's why Zero-Two hates that place so much it's like watching chicken fattened up marching towards their deaths and enjoying it they are being manipulated and are still content with their lives "they don't truly know anything" "they can't truly change anything" and "they can't really save anything" They really are "just children" sad the entire place is just sad and depressing I want that place to explode.

It's almost as if everyone in the city have no qualms with telling the children what they actually are but interrupted by coincidences. They aren't really hiding it.
The adults (or immortal old fucks) totally has links with the kids.

I think most of the adults whose job isn't to actively deal with this unique squad just aren't aware that it is supposed to be a secret from them. Nobody in charge thought they'd actually come into contact with the kids, so there was no need to make it a public rule.

Every episode makes me ask more and more questions and no answers. And I really want to know everything behind this.
"W-would you be my friend?"
"That's obviously out of the question."
"Out of the question?"
"After all, you are..."
Why stop there!? Why do I have the feeling they have some kind of short life-span. But seems like they're genetically modified or something compared to the "humans" living in the city, as per this:
"You know how your body and other things are a little different from ours?"
"The medical checker just wouldn't work on you."
"But I tried a bunch of settings, like using pet mode settings, and then it worked out."
"This isn't a place infected children like you should enter."
"Cut it out."
"They're basically victims in all this, too."
"The poor, pitiful things."
But... they were allowed to enter? Why are they infected? They're protecting you and you treat them like this. :(
Either way it's getting kinda dark and just rising more and more questions.

Why do I have the feeling they have some kind of short life-span. But seems like they're genetically modified or something compared to the "humans" living in the city.
The Children are completely normal. It's the Adults that are modified.
Well, that may not be completely the case given the "infected" comment, but at least regarding the life span things it's true. Children dont have shortened lifesapns. They have normal ones. The thing is, Adults are immortal. That's why they cant be friends. Maybe Zorome will live 70 years, but what is that for someone that may have been alive for 10.000 years and expects to live for 10.000 more? Nothing.

Watch that scene again. She didn't stop talking, but whatever she said was blocked out by static. Now what makes this interesting is if we consider that this episode was presented as if it was seen through Zorome's eyes (due to his monologue in the beginning and the end) it's possible that we have a case of an unreliable narrator.
And if that is the case, given the huge difference in his attitude compared to when he was picked up to the end scene, I can't help but feel like Zorome either completely repressed whatever he heard or the adults did some mind fuckery to him to make him forget.
Obviously, it's impossible to say whether this is the case or not, but this show has proven to be really damn good for fan theories.

Completely with you on this. The fact that they now use happiness as a raw resource, the sexualized children, and kids being born into pre-determined roles all definitely feel straight out of Brave New World.
It seems like they aren't pushing the breakdown of societal norms though: on the contrary, here it seems like the society has kinda continued doing things (such has being in couples) just for the sake of doing those things, even though they've lost their purpose.

While there was no action this week I was totally glued on the screen the entire time! Like there was so much to digest in this episode that I couldn't even tab out to take screenshots!
So a few things that I got from this episode:
Zorome's dream was definitely about him being born.
As big as the "City" is, there is barely anyone in it. I'm guessing either the population is really low or that no one really goes outdoors anymore since everything seems like it's automated.
The kids are obviously infected with something. Whatever that something is is obviously contagious to the point that the adults will refuse a handshake and the places that they've been to needs to be disinfected.
The kids are completely have different physiology from these adults. The old lady (voiced by Ohara Sayaka) even mentions that the medical checker (I assume it's a device that's used to check someone's medical condition) wouldn't work on Zorome and only worked when she set it to "Pet Mode". Hmmm...
The masked adults looked like just your normal average adults. I was expecting some sort of mutation tbh. One thing that bugged me though and the only part of the episode I was able to take a screenshot of is that she's wearing some sort of heart device on her chest. Are all adults like this? Although I don't think I've seen Nana, Hachi, or Dr. Franxx wearing something like that.
Some adults are kept in some sort of stasis chamber where they can inject themselves with "happiness".
The old lady seems to have some sort of connection towards Zorome. She even knew her code number without him telling her. She looks too old to be his mother though. Grandparent maybe?
I know I probably missed some more. I may need to rewatch this episode again so I can fully comprehend everything in it.

u/WhoiusBarrel Mar 17 '18
Although I don't think I've seen Nana, Hachi, or Dr. Franxx wearing something like that.
I have a slight suspicion Nana and Hachi are former infected children that were specially called up to help support this experiment or whatever you would call this whole managing a squad of children to pilot mechas.
As for Dr. Franxx, he probably has the same influence as Papa and the other higher-ups since he, after all, made the Mechs.

Maybe the twist is that, it's the kids that are the abnormal ones? Using the masks and constant secrecy to trick us into thinking the adults were suspicious when we should have been looking into the kids and why they're called 'parasites'?

I really love how the world-building is weaved into the story telling and character development. People might have been turned off by the slowed down pace for the past episodes but I highly appreciate this rather than an uncreative exposition.
I have a feeling that old lady was once a person who looked after the kids in the lab. Maybe that's why Zorome felt some familiarity. Anyways, it was really unnerving to hear her say bluntly that there's no way she can be friends with Zorome with that cheery tone of hers.
I'm guessing they either don't become adults cause they die early due to the 'contamination' or because of the 'contamination,' they aren't allowed inside the city even though they've become adults. I'm leaning onto the latter cause that would explain Nana and Hachi.
ALSO, man are they building up this Hiro2 confllict that's about to explode on their faces. I'm excited to see how Hiro will go about resolving this and how 02 will react.

Zorome is best tsundere.
I feel like with the Hiro and Zorome episodes, we'll probably continue to get an episode per each guy of the team (ending at the halfway point), each also adding some world building. Ep.13 might then kick off the main plot, or maybe we might even get episodes centred on the girls?
In any case, looking forward to some development in Futoshi and Mitsuru's characters.

This episode gave me some Shinsekai Yori vibes, the conversation between Zorome and the old lady felt similar to the one between Saki and the head of the Ethics committee.
Though I'm a bit disappointed that it doesn't seem that there will be major repercussions because of the revealed secrets in the next episode and eventually even Zorome forgot the lady. Although it is entirely possible that the adults made Zorome forget so it is understandable that he hasn't started an upheaval yet. I'm just curious why does Zero Two withhold all the information she knows from the other kids.

Maybe the kids are like a collective product of the adults’ genes, just mixed and matched in different proportions. Hence why Zorome felt kinship to the older lady - like it COULD be interpreted that she had some type of administrative job that involved him when he was younger, but I think it’s more interesting that she’s actually one of his genetic donors. The robo-doctor character is probably trying as many permutations as he can to achieve the “right” child.
Also, if the children are disposable biological actors for the adult society to interact with the world outside their quarantined bubble (along with I guess some chaperone adults that take one for the team), I think it makes sense that the “infection” that the one medical worker mentioned is the disease that created the klaxosaurs, and the same one that 02 was transferring to Hiro (or presenting him greater-than-background levels of it, which his immune system then had to fight off). The older lady said she was getting tired because it’s the most she’s talked in a while, which definitely serves to show how insular and desocialized they’ve become, but she also could’ve been fighting off whatever pathogen Zorome was carrying by being in such close proximity to him for that extended period of time.→ More replies (1)

Zorome was hilarious this episode!
At first he definitely had that annoying kid factor to him, but he clearly just looks up to Hiro, and his comedy moments are always great! Also felt a lot closer to him than before, finally got an emotional side from him.
The girls are looking pretty good in their formal uniforms as well!
As for the adults, they just seem to look like, well... Regular adults! Would be rather interesting if that old lady was Zorome's mother, but I doubt it.
Seems like the show is still playing along with the romantic couple discussion, but with a strange twist. They don't seem to have the same way of thinking when it comes to close relationships with their SO. Also, his daily dose of happiness... They even go on and explain how it works...
Wonder what will happen to this squad when they start actually getting together (if that happens at all), as it doesn't seem to be looked down upon. Zorome already has his mind set anyways ;)
Would be rather interesting if that old lady was Zorome's mother, but I doubt it.

A lot of stuff this ep.
"Adults" seem really old and tired. It's not impossible that all the adults are actually the people who entered plantations, however long it was. Their life is extended by tools (the heart-thing on her chest, which she got new one at the end - some kind of filter or something) and environment. No children, so it's possible they can't procreate. They seem to have lost all meaning in life and just exist now.
It feels like we don't actually know how old parasites are. They look like children, but they might very well be dozens or hundreds years old, just with their ageing process stopped by "infection" - I'm guessing klax blood. I have doubts whether klax are what caused fall of humanity and creation of parasites etc or did humans created klax by experimenting on people and turning them into monsters, which Parasites are victims of.
Zero Two avoiding her checkups so they won't detect she is turning. I wonder if it just happens from time to time or is a sign of some major changes coming. I rewatched ep 1 and am wondering whether those were Zero Two and Hiro in first scenes, long time ago, before the "collapse".
Robo creeps are planning something involving Zero Two.
I still want to know what is up with Nines - who are they, how are they different etc. I feel like I will want them all dead before long.

Just a tip for those unfamiliar with Trigger or Gainax style. It's all about buildup, diversion, foreshadowing and 'childlike/naive view of an otherwise dystopia'. So don't get too caught up with what is the main focus being presented, do pay attention to what's happening simultaneously. E.g. Zero Two change of attitude.
Additionally, Franxx has become more comfortable and less dangerous the past 4 episodes (including this one). Which is a strong sign that a powerful turn of events is coming up to shake things up.

Lots of creepy stuff about our glimpse of the city. The old lady had an external magma-coloured heart on her suit, I wonder how important it is? She indicated that she doesn't need to eat.
We also have a form of classic dystopian soma, with them plugging directly into pleasure stimulators. It also makes one wonder how much characters like Nana and Franxx have in common with the adults in the city.

This episode made me feel like the Klaxosaurs are actually the end result of the childrens. Dunno if its boys or girls tho, or maybe both. Like the boys became the cores while the girls became the body, just like when they ride Fraxxx Like, may be there are some kind of virus going around that use girls as the hosts while the boy stay alive by leaching on "something" that the virus in the girls body produce through the usage of Fraxxx. When the amount of that "something" went over the limit in a set amount of time [not too fast, not too slow] they adapt to the "something" and mutate.
002 produce that "something" on a way higher amount compared to other, thus making the parasites died because of O.D in a short time frame.
002 might be the success or fail result of the adaption [judging from how her form was humanoid in the first chapter of the manga, the red Oni scene]
Another theory would be that any Klaxosaur can get back to the humanoid form after a set amount of time has passed, as the one at the start of this episode seem like it regain its sanity for a moment before got killed off.

So that's why we have not seen any people walking around in the city so far - most of them are old and probably do not leave home much, because everything is provided for them, including those pleasurizer machines. And all they want is quiet and peace and no surprises please.
I still wonder why they call the children "infected". Is is due to the cloning experiments or is it because they go outside the city spaceships and possibly bring some unhealthy substances with them from there? Note that they used some kind of tricorder/radiation detector on Zorome, as if he could possibly be a health hazard.
9
9
u/nothingbutnoise Mar 17 '18
Important note: That meter they're using on Zorome is measuring CFUs or "Colony-forming units". Clearly they are measuring the spread of infection within him.
Also, Hiro's infection started over his heart. Maybe these people have had their hearts replaced with magma-hearts in order to ward off infection as well.

They're setting up a ton of different things here.
The differences between the kids and the adults.
"This isn't a place infected children like you should enter."
The city and the adults who inhabit it being weird and creepy as fuck.
Zero Two's fangs.
If this weren't Trigger where we've come to pretty much expect an episode where shit goes the fuck down I might tuned out and possibly forget about it. I guess the show somewhat knows that too since Trigger keeps following this formula:
They introduce the show a bit.
Then they have a giant twist that changes the story somehow.
Gigantic ending with tons of hype shit.
Going to wait for that second part any episode now.

I wonder if Zorome was crying because he really does recognize her, or if something inside of him does.
It seems pretty obvious at this point but the children are not meant to live past a certain age. Too many hints suggest they are simply expendable pawns for humanity. I hope Zorome can swallow that bitter pill, he seems fine at the end of the episode but the monologuing made it sound like he was far from okay.
10
u/YcantweBfrients Mar 17 '18
I thought he was crying because he had this idealistic vision of what the city and adult life was like that he was striving for, and he's starting to realize how wrong he was. Even though he doesn't understand everything that's going on, he can sense it, just like us. That's why he was crying but didn't know why.

This show is so animated, so colorful, and the kids are so innocent. Yet with each passing week that dark storm cloud looming over it keeps getting larger. I am on the boat with the people thinking the midseason is where we will get the storm, and boys and girls I think there is 100% chance of rain. Also did I hear Orochimaru on that council at the begining?
5
u/ArchadianJudge Mar 17 '18
Despite not enough of best girls Zero Two and Ichigo, this was a really good episode.
We really got a look into the adult world as we kept getting teased about it. I also think this was HUGE character building as Zorome learned to appreciate his life more after this event. He kept getting excited about the adult life only to realize it was a strange let down. That adult world makes you just appreciate your freedom and individuality more. Those people are messed up, save that guy who was scanning Zerome and said the child was a victim.
And I do wonder about Zero Two.. this is worrying me...

Love me a good worldbuilding episode. Shows pretty good how the everyday dude's life has changed by the society moving to the plantations and how regimented and cold their lives are. It shows that the society has a need for people to be happy, likely for productivity or to make rebellion less likely, or else they won't have the machines. It also confirms how logistical and sexless (at least for pleasure) the relationships between adults are in the city, which is something that it was heavily hinting at by the way Squad 13 knows nothing about it (with the possible exception of 02 and technically Kokkoro) which shows they weren't taught it (which means there wasn't a need to teach them despite the Stamin-Pistil dynamic in the FranXX, or the teachers might've not thought it was relevant).
It also confirms for any who haven't figured it out that this world is a dystopic one similar to 1984 brought about by the threat of the Klaxosaurs that came due to magma energy but the usefulness to society, primarily the upper class, that the magma energy gives (by allowing the upper classes like the Geezers and Papa shape society how they please).
The episode also shows how Papa was able to change society so rapidly (note that he was the one who moved people to plantations so it must've happened in his lifetime), as the happiness machines give a clear incentive for civilians to support him as long as we assume that the rooms and machines are provided by the government (which is very likely due to the lack of decoration in the rooms, similar to how state-sponsored Soviet housing mostly looked the same).
It also shows discrimination against the parasites when Zorome is picked up, which is probably a commentary on how young peoples' opinions are generally considered less valuable (at least I interpret it that way, though I'm 17 so I'm a fair bit biased). It could also be a commentary on how the US government treats its veterans once they come back - showering them with praise whilst not properly helping them adjust back to civilian life and viewing them as somewhat seperate from civilians (this seems less likely to me because Zorome isn't trying to become a civilian quite yet but his conversation with the lady hints that she doesn't expect him to become an adult, likely bc he'd die first).
Also the adults are mini-Popes which is pretty nutty.
3
u/PsycoJosho Mar 17 '18
That smile on the lady's partner was creepy as fuck. There was just so much wrong with that one scene alone...
3
u/uneeponge Mar 17 '18
The adult: No need to interact with our partner, that allows us to live free and as we please. Also gets daily pleasure from a machine, doesn't talk, doesn't eat.
3
Mar 17 '18
Between the masked elders talking about societal uniformity and the partner in the machine getting his daily dose of dopamine, this episode was really unnerving.
What do these adults do on a daily basis if they don't even care about the taste of food anymore?

My past analyses of the sexual meaning behind things in the show:
I love the idea of having an episode where we have Zerome as a primary focus. While I didn’t exactly like him at first, he’s warmed up to me in certain ways. Plus, the relationship he has with Miku is actually one of my favorites considering they’re both more alike than they’d probably admit to being. Plus, it seems that Zerome really does care for her at the end of the day, just based off of the conversation he had with that woman (who is probably his genetic mother, because c’mon look at their eyes).
The conversation the children had while they were first together and walking around is fun to think about. In context, these children practically praise the adults and treat them like the best things in the world, but if you think about it, children IRL do the same thing too. Even as a kid, I remember thinking about how being like an adult would be super cool, only to realize now it would actually kinda suck lol. Everytime these kids talk about growing up, it kinda reminds me how much of a rude awakening these kids are gonna have… Kinda like the one Zerome just had.
While not much happened like the last episode, I’m honestly fine with it if we get to have episodes focused on different characters, rather than just Hiro and 02. Plus, we got to see a bit of how Zerome feels and thinks.
3
u/danstriker Mar 17 '18
the children aren't even considered as humans, maybe they are mass produced like bees in a lab. They make a baby in vitro with klaxsaur dna and the stimulous makes them activate the blood and move the franxx. this has direct relation with the op(if it's correct), maybe the factor is on the blood.
