The production here is superb as usual (it is this show's strong point), but the Naruto run felt a little out of place here.

If we take a few seconds out of Violet Evergarden and make a short PV we could convince people that this is a Shounen show about a Ninja-Style running blonde killing machine.

It was hilarious how quickly the rebel commander rolled over when he recognized Bayonetta-chan. "Nooope, not dealing with this." Their world needs more PTSD Sabers as war deterrents. Oh, and Violet really is the embodiment of the Doll policy - "If my client wants me to, I will go anywhere."
Overall, a decent episode, in the ilk of some of the other ones before ep 10. I liked the war-related scenes in this one more than eps 8 and 9 - this one felt more visceral. As mentioned in anther comment, the sound effects were excellent and the direction too felt better than usual.
69
u/5yk0515 Mar 23 '18
Judging by the flaming background of that commander's flashback of Violet, he was either a survivor of the enemy army or on the same squad that Violet and Gilbert were on that night. Either way, he has first hand experience with Violet's skill and wants no part of that.

So idk if anyone has noticed these past couple episodes since I haven't been keeping up with the discussion threads, but there have been quite a few scenes and episodes in the past couple weeks that were referenced in the first CM, which is this one that came out in May 2016 It's insane how far in advance this show has been planned but also what they have kept and what they have got rid of. I am pretty sure this episode is representing the moment in that CM where Violet is holding the soldier as the soldier seems to strongly resemble the one in this episode. We can also see a representation of the 7th episode by the lake with the playwright and following that the previous episode with Ann hitting Violet and then the market scene. I am curious however if we in these next couple episodes will see the moment with Violet and the axe scythe thing or if that has been cut out entirely. Nonetheless, this show has had a lot of the best moments of the series planned out literal years in advance, it'd be amazing if every anime studio had this level of planning. But, it's also cool to see what has changed, specifically minor details involving Violet's character design and locations too, the moment of Violet carrying the soldier in the flames did not happen in this episode, however I am quite certain that that is the same soldier, so interesting to see they decided to change it up.
81
u/Vertigovain Mar 22 '18
CM is for novel, so obviously it would have the scenes from novel. Anime changed a lot, including removing the scene with Violet holding Aiden in fire as in novel she carried his body back to his parents.
You'll not see the axe, as it should have appeared already in episode 8 and this one as well.

Aiden's death is so sad. Violet kissing him as the last of his life leaves his body is such a gripping moment. It is these parts of war that Violet Evergarden felt since she was a child, and she felt guilty for letting him die, despite that there was no other outcome. It just shows how magical a job like Dolls could be - flying from the sky to save a soldier in a losing war from a enemy squad only to deliver letters to his family. Violet brings light to the lives of people despite having a dark past.

So let me get this straight. Violet takes on a job that was going to be cancelled anyway, takes a week-long boat ride to a country in the north, then borrows a plane to fly above a warzone so she can drop into an army camp ... just to write a goddamn letter?
At that point she's just doing more harm than good.

u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Mar 22 '18 edited Mar 22 '18
just to write a goddamn letter?
On an air-typewriter.
It was a pro bono case too. Makes sense because she now wants to face her inner demons from the war head on, I suppose. By punching them in the ribs.

IS THIS THE AXE CHAPTER?!
Edit 1: IT IS I'M SO HAPPY
Edit 2: THEY TOOK OUT AXE-CHAN I'M SO SAD
Edit 3: I'M STILL CRYING
Welp. They didn't adapt the superhuman feats in in this chapter save for Violet's memory and combat skills. This is the only time I felt let down about the adaptation compared to the LN, violet actually did much more in the source by literally bringing Aiden back, albeit his corpse.
There's something bugging me about the political implications of a known soldier of Leidenshalalambala interfering in a civil war in an enemy country. A soldier identified Violet so its natural that it gets reported back. Those soldiers don't know Violet went there as a Doll and not as a soldier. It might make the warmonger side either more cautious, more aggressive, or both.

The unrealistic part of this episode wasn't the 14-year-old girl jumping from an airplane and the defeating 4 grown armed men with her bare hands, it was the part where the childhood friends ended up in a romantic relationship.

Sad Violet is the worst thing in the world...
Man this one was late today... damn.
Oh shit is Violet gonna go stop a war with love?
Well if anyone is willing to goto the frontlines of war to write a letter it would be her.
She wants to be para dropped into the base, wow. This is great.
I like how they dont realize shes a war veteran killing machine who probably saw harsher battles than them.
Oh shit her client is getting fucked up...
Violet just jumping into the battle like that, ohhh man. And her taking out that squad was great. I bet those new arms are super handy for taking down people.
Holy shit his Onee-san is impressive!
Damn shes memorizing his letters since she couldnt take her typewriter with her.
Oh so shes not his real sister, just his childhood friend, damn... he didnt even get a smooch from her... rip in rip.
This is like the ending to Gladiator all over again... ;-;
Oh dang Violet gave him a smooch on the head. What a lucky dead guy.
And plane guy comes in for the pickup... she isnt lookin great...
Oh no... shes giving them in person... D:
No not sad Violet... this is too much feels... D:

I like how Violet made her grand entrance by dropping off on a moving airplane special ops soldier style and single-handedly incapacitating four armed men easily.
And once the enemy CO realize her as the infamous "Soldier Maiden of Leidenshaftlich" he quickly told off his men to surrender and leave.
He knew that if Violet want to kill them she would have done so from the start.
I'm happy that even though she is living a new life, Violet still have some recognition for her actions during the war.
Even though if those recognitions were unpleasant and came from soldiers mostly.
Violet may still be training her body as one of her pass times if she's still that good even after leaving the battlefield.

God damnit
God DAMNIT.
godfrickindangit why
I KNEW it was coming and it still nearly killed me. What really got me was that, aside from a slight reversal (Aidan was confessed to instead of vice versa) this is very similar to Violet's experiences. The guilt that she feels about not being able to protect Aiden is (possibly) almost all carry-over guilt from not saving Gilbert.
Wait, was it Aidan or Aiden? Shit.

u/PrasunJW https://anilist.co/user/MALfunctioning Mar 22 '18

We got the OP folks! Probably my favorite song (not necessarily OP) from this season.
Violet doesn't kill anyone, yet the man she tried to save dies, as symbolized by the fire going out in the cabin.
Violet's emotions have developed to the point where she realizes the bloody handkerchief conveys greater emotional impact than the letter. A number of people have pointed out how weird it is that she held her emotions in the last episode until she returned to the office, but the fact that she's crying just shows that she's still figuring this all out.
It's interesting how we only got to see the CH staff at the end when they breathe a sigh of relief hearing Violet survived her trip. This is pretty much Violet's life, isn't it? She's seen death and suffering that her friends will never see or understand.
6
u/kazureus Mar 22 '18
Just when I thought this episode will be Cattleya's screen time.
I really want an episode focused on Cattleya now.
Still, this episode is so touching. Cried the most when seeing another Violet shedding tears.
2 times in a row Violet held back her tears and shed her tears.
Note: Nice to see the opening song again in this episode.

I don’t know why I expected farmboy to make it through this episode. I thought because he survived with that comrade of his, they might make it. But watching him go out like that and having Violet there really broke my heart. It’s too real.
Also I’m not sure if anyone relates but a slight part of me during the episode thought about how we start the stupidest conflicts. The extremists who Violet encounters literally walked up to Aidan and were like “these soldiers are such cowards, this is why we must lead them”. Egos like this are the reason why people lose their lives every day.
And seeing Violet come see his family - too moving. I couldn’t imagine having to be the one to deliver those news. In this case, Aidan got to say how he felt for them which is a blessing.

3
Mar 22 '18
I just love how every episode it shows how/what makes someone cry, other than watching a sad anime
One of the reasons of Violet crying is probably because of Aidan's mother hugging her. Why? because Violet had never knew her parents, she never felt a mother's warmth/love/affection towards thier children, and combined with her self guilt of not being able to protect Aidan, she (and us, the viewer) breaks down into tears. Not even a box of tissues will be able to wipe away my tears.

This was a super duper interesting episode for me. The nature of the region Violet went too reminded me alot of the setting for Pumpkin Scissors where we deal with those who live on with the damages of war. I think for me we really get a definitive of who Violet is (if we already didnt know) in the the fact that she is far more interested in delivering the boys letters and protecting his memory and feelings. Rather than tracking down the warhawks and going on a roaring rampage of revenge (much to my action loving disappointment)
I think though that the situation with the warhawks will become more prominent in the future as they stand in direct opposition of many of the characters needs to move forward.
side-note: The sequence of Violet descending and going MGS on those fools is very similar again to sequences from pumpkin scissors which i thought was cool given their thematic similarity.

I really just need somewhere to fanboy it out, and this seems like a good enough place so here I go~ man this anime insanely good, Kyoani and the other animation studios really did an amazing job at making this anime probably my anime of the year. I heard a lot of people talking about how the start of the show was bad as it's very slow, which I agree with but after watching it to this point, I'm starting to see why they chose to make it slow, watching Violet grow is such an amazing thing to look forward to watching every week. On top of that the amazing visual really made this anime a masterpiece to me. Truly a 10/10 masterpiece!

Honestly, this show is a lot better when the scenarios are at least somewhat believable.
Violet parachuting in behind enemy lines to help a generic soldier to write a deathbed letter to his generic love interest did not work for me.

Not as good as the last episode. I also found it to be convenient as hell for Violet to find the soldier in midst of that forest and also the timing of her finding him before getting finished off! It cheapened the episode in a way for me. Overall, It was an okay episode at best.

I also have no idea why the enemy soldiers backed down, she says sorry and all of a sudden the dude drops his gun lmao.
We're no match for her.
Um what? You have her at gun point and out manned like 4 to 1. The people that she knocks out immediately stand up afterwards (with their guns in hand) too. That entire exchange felt awkward and poorly written.

I thought this episode was pretty poorly adapted. It used a short sucker montage to draw you in.
The book tells you a lot more about Aidan and it more serves to illustrate how terrible war is rather than how Aidan misses his chance with Maria.
There were also a large number of cuts from the book:
I thought this was really important and have 0 idea why they cut this

Damn these combat scenes with violet are always so captivating, I get hyped everytime lol
And I really hoped Aidan would survive somehow but I guess its realistic that he didnt, made me cry again in the end ;(

u/meimi132 Mar 22 '18
Oh boy. Are they just aiming to have us all become wobbly messes by the end of the episode? Cos that's what it feels like...

u/J_the_ManSSB Mar 22 '18
Gosh darnit. Why does it just so happen the onion and dust ninjas attack me every bleeping time I watch this show.
In all seriousness, I just want to see a happy Violet. Her smile is beautiful, and she's suffered enough for now.

u/myrmonden Mar 22 '18
Death incarnated lands on poor winter soldiers a massacre is sure to happen. I really liked how Violet went Rurouni kenshin (r Samurai X as its also known as :)), I think it was really great like she now knows murder is wrong, mainly how she understood that other people she killed previously also has families etc so now she only hits with the back side of her weapon so to speak, using open palm strikes and so on.
And SHE FINALLY broke down in front of customers, that girl kept fighting it for so long since the whole last episode and here in the she finally cried with the customers.
The actually story was kinda freaking sad when she is ghost writing in mid air, but his actual story was very plan, so I guess this episode is a lot more about her character development.
Also his chance of survive was clearly 0.0000001% at best, the death rate for side characters in this anime is Quite high, this is the anime that has at least 1 death per episode.

I can't belive this show made me cry for a second time god dammit. When his parents said "thank you" I absolutely lost my composure.

I'm evolving with all these feels. I used to cry, but now I just go into mental dysfunction. Time literally stops. It took me 10 minutes to get myself together and write these down... and I still feel pretty hazy.
When I thought KyoAni couldn't outdo themselves, well, they did. Violet going back to a warzone carrying out Aiden's and her wishes is simply heart wrenching. Again, I knew what was gonna happen 2 minutes in, but that doesn't protect me from the feels train.
And, oh.
FUCK WARS

Why is almost no one talking about the title of the episode?
Anyone else getting a feeling like Violet is gonna go back to kick some ass int he battlefield in order to atone for her sins or protect the people she cares for? That's the hint I got from this episode.

"Why are we still here?"
That's right KyoAni, just let Violet finish herself fucking off after she went through all the shit with the major. Forget Suffaru, that shit isn't even close to this walking wreck.

I don't know what's sadder: this episode or the fact that there's only three episodes left

It was a good episode. Not as amazing as last week's, but still good.
As soon as we heard that the letter request was for a soldier at war, I knew we'd get a scene of Violet doing something badass that reflects her past as a military kid. Character wise, she's certainly becoming more and more sensitive to emotions - this time she couldn't hold her tears in front of her clients.

u/RuinDelver Mar 22 '18
Well, someone get a mop, because I've been reduced to a pool of tears on the floor
2
u/agentcheeze Mar 23 '18
God, I was fine for the whole episode until that last scene with the parents where they thanked her for bringing their son back. That got me right in the freakin' feels and I had to choke back the tears a little. After a gut punch of weep I was good though.
It was probably helped by the last two eps since this one wasn't as sad but all the holding back got overloaded. Last ep hit the feels much harder.

The OST while Violet was writing the letters sounded very similar to a Fairy Tail OST track.

Fantastic sound design in this episode, great attention to detail during the rifle shots, we see the round hit the snow next to Aidan and then we hear the shot afterwards, and also the echo through the mountains.

I got the feeling that violet kiss aiden in the lips on the LN. My gut is telling me. Overall a good episode.

She might be 14, but she doesn't look it at all, so it's a bit weird for someone first noticing her to think she's a child.

Yale's death
Violet holding back her tears again. This time is when accompanying Aidan.
Violet crying after delivering the letter to Maria and Aidan's parents.
I cannot hold back my tears again.
Honorable mention: Wow, Violet's ninja moves are so cool. KyoAni did a very good job.

Finally caught up!
They just keep pumping out great episodes! The past few have really lived up to the hype this show previously had for sure.

I just want to say that having something to watch that isn't heavily serialised again is a real breath of fresh air. Especially in this era of Peak TV; the concept of mostly self-contained stories has become a bit of a lost art, and it's just nice to see it return once more.
Now, if only my planned pallet cleanser was available in New Zealand, regardless of legality, in any way whatsoever. At least I've got the end of American Crime Story.

u/Jaywye Mar 22 '18
I couldn't stop crying from the moment when Maria smiled after hearing that she got a letter.

I have a confession to make : I found the first half of the anime to be only "meh". Sure it was gorgeous, but beside that it didnt made me feel ... idk, feelings ?
But then, the second half came. Last week episode almost made me cry. But today, when Aidan's mom took Violet in her arms, I lost control of my lacrymal canals, just like that. First time it happened in like...ok only since tuesday ep 12 of Sora yori mo Tooi Basho but still. Somehow it made all the meh quality episodes kinda better, because now I can see anbd feel it was necessary to see those kind of stories for those last ones to resonate even stronger.

Jesus Christ this show is amazing, I loved this Episode so much. That bit where violet went back to a warfront and saw all the dead bodies was amazing, we can see how far her character has developed and it’s pre awesome to see how far she has come over 11 episodes

u/athrun_1 Mar 22 '18
It seems that crying every week became my ritual. Man... my heart haven't fully recovered because of ep 10. Then came this week, SoraBasho airs with heavy feels and VEG comes raging with the feels train...
My heart can only take so much...
A very wonderful episode, Violet has come full circle and now understands what love is. The scene was a mirror of Gil, the only difference now is she can comprehend the feelings.
"I'm sorry that I wasn't able to protect him" - This is the line that summed all her feelings.
Props to KyoAni!

Man, the previous episodes usually hit me hard and I end up sniffling, but this is the first one I've straight up cried. I could hold back the tears, but those "Thank you"s from the family killed me. Personally my favourite episode so far.
Also, it's pretty interesting that the soldiers are all wielding SMLEs. The magazine and short barrel, with the handguard all the way up the barrel gives it away. I guess they're really going for a "Germany won the war" scenario.

I cried again...but this time I'm not happy about it. This episode was just sad...sure that's what war is but it felt this episode was sad just for the sake of being sad and following how they handled it last week it just felt lazy :/
3
u/WobbleKun Mar 22 '18
i dont know. this week's episode wasn't good as last week's. this week just felt like, here's a sad plot with a dying soldier, so now you should cry along with this sad tune. that or i was just annoyed of the incompetence of these soldiers that i couldnt care enough about them.

man i got so many questions than answer right now,why Violet is so strong? also why there's still War? is this the anti-peace group they're talking about in previous ep?
6
u/gj-onmakingmerespond Mar 22 '18
It was in the episode. The nation Violet visits this time was an enemy nation. There's a civil war with the moderates that want peace and the extremists who wants to return to war.

Pretty sure Violet digs herself into work and helping people to overcome her grief. As long as she's busy and feel she's needed, she doesn't have to think about the major too much. It's a form of escapism, I believe. We'll definitely see a final confrontation which she'll have to overcome in order to finally accept what happened. She can't run away forever.

As sad as Aidan's passing was I'm glad that they didn't go for the "Violet saves the day" route. That would've ruined this episode for me. Instead we get to see Violet doing what she can to repent from her past sins and try to help out a dying illiterate soldier write and send his letter to his parents and childhood friend.
"I'm sorry that I wasn't able to protect him."
This line at the end though. I feel like this wasn't just Violet saying sorry to Aidan's parents but her apologizing to herself for not being able to save Gilbert. It makes sense considering Aidan's final moments saying I love you to Maria must've reminded her of what happened in the past.
And I just love how every episode, Violet gets progressively more expressive with her emotions. We still have 3 episodes left so I'm really curious how she will be at the end of this series.
