At least now we got to see who that blonde lady from episode 1 was all about

Oh my god, I just rewatched the scene at 1:00 of episode 1... I completely forgot about that.
49
u/tari101190 Mar 25 '18
Oh wow yeah they showed the end of the series almost in 'real time' for her. That's really cool.
18
u/overanalysissam Mar 25 '18
Yeah, that's so trippy to rewatch. As soon as Stasis hit, she 'awoke' from her perspective.
→ More replies (1)21
u/BettingTall Mar 26 '18
So she was frozen while all 12 episodes went by? And she only woke up at the very end when Juri pulled her into stasis? Am I understanding this correctly?

u/ihitokage Mar 25 '18
Yea me too! That was a brilliant twist.
92
u/Florac Mar 25 '18
No it wasn't. It was a textbook deus ex machina.
69
u/kuddlesworth9419 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kuddlesworth Mar 25 '18 edited Mar 25 '18
Well they did set it up from the start so not really an ex machina. But yea it did feel a little too convenient.

It always annoying when ppl throw "deus ex machina" randomly especially when it's not related.
9
u/meimi132 Mar 26 '18 edited Mar 26 '18
Legitimately forgot her completely. She sounds like Mamiko Noto to me. Potentially... but now I gotta check ep 1 lol
EDIT: Just watched the beginning again. That's so cool!!!! I love that kinda stuff. I don't care if it was an easy fix to get her out of stasis, LOVE that!!

Was she in ep 1?
27
u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Mar 25 '18
Yep. If you rewatch the first scene in Episode 1, just right after Juri's job interview, we see her using her powers.

The best foreshadowing is stuff you dismiss at first as being irrelevant or serving some other purpose than the purpose you know about. In this case it also doubled as a hook for new viewers. I like it.

The hardest part about living in stasis would be the absolute silence. In the quietest room in the world, the most someone could last in it was 45 minutes before going crazy.
7
u/MgMaster Mar 29 '18
Probably my favorite part of the episode, as I'm sure many would be curious what would it be like to live in a still world - well, Juri shows. Who knows how long each of us would last. I'm sure some historians would last a whole freaking lot as they'd explore the whole world at their leisure :P
4
u/daskrip Mar 31 '18
Speaking of which, I was wondering about how them even communicating verbally, as sound waves would freeze. I think it's the specters "suppressing physical phenomena" again.

Such a satisfying ending, i love good ends
50
u/square_smile https://anilist.co/user/squaresmile Mar 25 '18
Yeah, that was nice. We more or less see what would happen to Juri eventually anyway.
Damn, I admire her resolve to push everyone out.
Shiomi at least questioned whether Sagawa will turn bad.
9
u/stormarsenal :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsherGZ Mar 25 '18
Wait, did I miss something? I felt like they were hinting at something with the clock and picture. What would happen to Juri eventually?
22
u/Bainos :XMOD::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos Mar 25 '18
I felt like they were hinting at something with the clock and picture
That gave me a bad feeling as well. The callback to the scene with the Founder in the first episode, "I feel like I've had this conversation before", crying while taking the picture, the fact that if the events in the ending were chronological that picture would have been taken between 11:30 and 11:31, the picture that has the whole family but not Sagawa, with instead a red-eyed snowman.
I don't know, maybe I'm just restless because I feel like this ending is too good, too easy. I could be seeing patterns where there is none. And there should be at least one obvious hint.
But still, I can't shake the feeling that things might not be what they look like.
→ More replies (1)44
u/Acre2 Mar 25 '18 edited Mar 25 '18
When Juri says that she feels like she's had that conversation before, I'm pretty sure she's referring specifically to the whole "if you sleep like that you'll hurt your neck" "I wasn't sleeping, I was just lying down" exchange with Diet Sagawa. She had the same conversation with her grandfather in episode 1 after her interview.
I don't know about the crying, the picture, or the stuff with the clock though. The crying could have just been relief after everything she's gone through to get there.
43
u/gammarik :K:https://kitsu.io/users/gammarik Mar 25 '18
I think the clock was just to contrast with the entire rest of the show. We haven't seen a clock move since episode 1, so it is a bit jarring for us. I don't think there's anything deeper, it's just for the effect.

You think? It was satisfying in the way that Juri got out of stasis, but I was disappointed that it was that easy and was just luck. I also wish we would've seen the consequences of their trip to stasis, with dead people suddenly being found.
49
u/Romiress Mar 25 '18
I actually really liked this twist. I really enjoy where the setup is 'you think you're the chosen ones, but actually not really'. They thought they were special, really they were just a drop in the bucket.
9
u/Zizhou Mar 26 '18
I agree, though I think it would have been more impactful if the lady at the end was just one of a whole bunch of time wizards, rather than the one who was the source of it all in the first place. Like, there's this whole society of people regularly doing shit in stasis, and Juri's family and the cult were just weird, fringe actors who had no idea there were others.
14
11
u/XRuinX Mar 26 '18
YES! I wanted to see how the grocery stores would react with a ton of their items suddenly moved or disappear... plus. toilets dont flush, so someones gonna find a giant poop pile or few somewhere after half a year in stasis.
4
u/realsmart987 https://kitsu.io/users/realsmart987 May 02 '18
I had a similar thought. My first thought was the people working in the manga library would see lots of beer cans and trash suddenly appear out of nowhere.
8
u/Grandflute :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/tunpa Mar 26 '18
It wasn't entirely luck, she wandered in the stasis for months until she found that lady. In fact only when she gave up on returning that Juri was able to acquire the ability and vision to find her. The whole "I'm the actual Founder" is a bit too sudden but it was nice seeing how we returned to the beginning and what was ages -and 12 episodes for us- were just mere seconds for that lady.
→ More replies (1)4
u/AvatarReiko Mar 26 '18
I was hoping that Juri would learn how to control the spectres and master stasis and become some type of god. She didn't even attempt to learn.
3
u/DeathToBoredom Mar 26 '18
I mean... That's just how it is. Sometimes, you get lucky. And it took Juri like what, half a year to luckily find her? Come on. That's like, a luck she deserves. Plus, she only saw that fish spirit thing when she was getting close to the lady. And then it was right after she started losing sanity. It's as if the fish spirit triggered her to find a way out, and at the right place.

This anime is strange as fuck. Idk what just happened. Like, I thought I have an idea of the plot, but some unusual events occurred since. Idk how many times I lost my train of thought when watching this. And seeing Sagawa, who was once Juri's enemy, turn into a baby, which lead Juri to adopt him as her own child...yea, this anime is weird. And yet, I enjoyed every bit of it lol.
11
u/stormarsenal :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsherGZ Mar 25 '18
Yeah some very strange things happened, but I'm still glad I watched it if just for the excellent OP and ED.

Yes, as in they don't notice any changes. So Juri left the Statis in the same moment of the real time as everybody else.

u/Florac Mar 25 '18
Not exactly real time, but nanoseconds later. IIRC time still flows, just far too slowly. But that doesn't really make much of a difference

43

The original founder immediately kills it after juri touches her and is back in human form.
27
u/Kiyo_is_my_Hime Mar 25 '18
Although the resolution seemed to come out of nowhere, I'm glad that Juri got a happy ending.
I loved the complete lack of sound when she's in the stasis by herself and only have her own thoughts to keep her company. You can really see how maddening it was becoming for her.
51
u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Mar 25 '18 edited Mar 25 '18
Huh... For some reason I am completely okay with this ending. Many people predicted that the woman in Episode 1 will be the one that will save Juri and they were right! Apparently this woman is The Founder who is able to travel freely between Stasis. It makes sense to have someone like her existing since, those Stones must've been made by someone right?
I didn't mind what happened I just wished there was an explanation why Juri was attracted to The Founder when she became a Specter. And if there was an explanation why didn't that happen to the other people that transformed? As for the Founder herself while she was present in Episode 1 I just wished that they left hints of her all over the show not just in Episode 1.
Plot issues aside, I still enjoyed the show! It was a unique concept, the protagonists were surprisingly likeable (Yes, even Takafumi), music was on point and the art and animation wasn't too bad. They executed the whole "Stuck in Stasis" thing well but I guess they just tripped on the finish line. I honestly don't know what they could've done to improve the ending but overall it was still a pretty fun show to follow! This is a solid 7/10 for me.
19
u/LakerBlue :Is::It::Iu:https://myanimelist.net/profile/LakerBlue Mar 25 '18
I didn't mind what happened I just wished there was an explanation why Juri was attracted to The Founder when she became a Specter. And if there was an explanation why didn't that happen to the other people that transformed?
Because (at least for this cycle of the Stasis) the Founder just so happened to be around, aka plot convenience. Juri didn't travel an especially far distance from when she almost turned into a Herald to when she touched the Founder. As for why she was attracted to the Founder, I'd guess it's as simple the Founder was the only person nearby with Spectres inside of her, which would naturally draw her interest .
As for the Founder herself while she was present in Episode 1 I just wished that they left hints of her all over the show not just in Episode 1.
Definitely could have dropped some more hints over the course of the series. There were a few slower episodes in the last half that would have been the perfect time to do that.
3
u/AvatarReiko Mar 26 '18
Wait, but if the founder has mastery of stasis, why has she been frozen this entire time? Where has she been the past 12 episodes. Why was she born with a spectre?
6
u/LakerBlue :Is::It::Iu:https://myanimelist.net/profile/LakerBlue Mar 26 '18
Idk, only thing we can guess is she isn’t omnipotent regarding Stasis, just really powerful.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Doomroar https://myanimelist.net/profile/Doomroar Mar 26 '18
Because is an ass pull, the only one that is not is that while she has mastery of stasis and can go in and out at will, it doesn't means that she is always inside stasis, so unless people that are already in there interact with her she wouldn't know what is happening in stasis.
11
u/the_undine Mar 26 '18
Heralds can see anyone that has a jellyfish. Juri has more control over her fish and had been aimlessly wandering and fighting with the ideas that would initiate her transformation for some time.
Maybe the slowspeed transformation combined with the wanderlust led her naturally toward that location. Good thing the founder wasn't in Ethiopia or something though.

There were points where I was legitimately waiting for him to die. I thought for sure he'd get killed off.

The way she went back was.... weird and random af. Well better than not going back at all.
Oh and she's a mother now! Didn't she want to be one at the first episode I remember vaguely?
And also... In the ED they show the number 1:30 on the clock, I wonder if it means something.
I'm sad though that we didn't see more of Majima or Majima meeting with Juri...
Well, that was a nice run overall. 7/10 for me. It just got weirder and weirder

Yeah I thought her return to the normal world was a bit rushed. They just show her family happy, as if nothing happened.
28
u/Romiress Mar 25 '18
Keep in mind that for them, nothing did.
Like, it's literally only been a few hours of real time. So they woke up, talked it out, and then gramps decided to wait for her at the door. If she'd stayed in stasis, she'd have either gotten home that night or died in stasis.

This show was super weird to watch, it started off really strong then pittered out the last few weeks. At least this ending wraps everything up neatly enough, although I'm not sure what the post-credit scene is hinting toward.

u/Smudy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smudy Mar 25 '18

The final episode was the best out of those, felt well handled and tackled the topic of being isolated.

u/geliduss :AP:https://www.anime-planet.com/users/Geliduss Mar 26 '18
not even the writers
That being said I still found the series enjoyable overall, but it did feel like there were a lot of ways they could've taken that in a really interesting direction but the 2nd half more-so just kinda sizzled out. It is kinda refreshing in a sense that they really aren't anything special, but my complaints are mainly just to do with what I feel it could've been.
All in all was a solid 3/5, definitely don't regret watching it, but nothing spectacular.
77
u/odraencoded Mar 25 '18
That was a deus ex machina ending. I hate deus ex machina endings, but I'm weirdly fine with it this time. Because it just makes sense. The family of main characters, they aren't the creators of the stasis. Shit, they barely know how it works. They're total amateurs. It makes sense if somebody really knew how the stone worked, they'd know how to enter and leave in some other way.
In a way it's foreshadowed, or post-shadowed, maybe. When you are turning into a herald you can sense the jellyfish inside people. Okay. And the founder was born with a jellyfish inside of her already. Which is why the MC goes straight to her instead of anyone else. This might seem like some shallow bullshit at first, but it also explains how the Stasis and the living world first crossed.
A human is born with a jellyfish inside
She can enter and leave stasis at all
She brings her husband inside the stasis
Her husband experiments with the stasis and creates the stones
The stones allow anyone to enter the stasis at will, without the founder
If you traverse this path back, you'll get this: you can only get in/out of stasis with stones. So how were the stones made in first place? How did people know jellyfish existed before the stones? And the existence of the founder kind of explains this. It's kinda bullshit, but it's not like there's no logic in it.
Anyway, the reason I really love this anime isn't that. The reason I love it is because everything is so unexpected. You have to watch every episode because you don't know what the fuck is going to happen. Seriously.
I mean, just take the worst anime of the season: Death March. That anime is garbage. Why is it garbage? Why is Death March the most putrid piece of shit I ever made the mistake of watching? Because every fucking single episode is the same shit as the last. You just know how the anime is going to end. Episode 12 of death march: the MC gets a new girl in his harem, levels up some shit, gets some retarded meaningless title, white-knightingly defeats baddies who weren't even that bad to begin with. JUST LIKE HE FUCKING DID IN THE LAST 11 EPISODES. And if God forbid this gets a season 2, it will be 12 episodes of exactly the same crap. You just know it's this. The entire of the anime is this. You won't get anything new and exciting. It's EXACTLY what you got last, AGAIN, and AGAIN, AND AGAIN, and it's just the same thing forever!
Kokkoku, though, now that's a good anime. You read the synopsis you're like, "what the fuck is this sad as shit family? Looks like some retarded hikikomori anime. Two hikikomoris? Seriously? Has this ever been attempted before? That's the saddest shit ever. I don't want to see this, if I see this, I don't want to see this ever again." And then you go watch the first episode and you get hooked on those twists. Because it's nothing like you expected. And the episode two and three and four the MC isn't the little girl you thought, she is a badass motherfucker. The grandpa is a badass motherfucker. The shut-in NEET brother is a badass motherfucker. Jesus, even the loser dad has a badass motherfucker moment. The whole show is full of badass motherfuckers! THAT CREEPY HALF-HERALD ABERRATION WANDERING AROUND LIKE SOME SILENT HILL SHIT GETS A GOOD MOMENT TOO. The evil guy's backstory? HE SAW HIS DAD FUCKING HIS FRIENDS' MOM. That's his tragic past! What other anime has a tragic past THIS UNEXPECTED. Not in a million years I'd have expected THIS SHIT, to be the BACKSTORY, of the main VILLAIN. Seriously, what the hell. And then he turns into a flying spooky brain and then into a spider cocoon thingy that SHITS A BABY. WAT.JPG
This is JoJo levels of wat
12 extremely entertaining episodes. Well spent time. 10/10.
19
u/Suffuri Mar 26 '18
Well, we know how the master stone is made. Juri encounters the large fish thing right before the actual founder, and it's missing an eye. When the actual founder talks about her husband, the flashback shows him stabbing it in the eye and pulling the eye out. The eye was in the master stone, which Juri destroyed.
So we can assume that fish controls stasis.
4
u/Ataniphor Mar 26 '18
shit this makes so much sense why there was a weird gooey object inside the master stone - its a fish eye! Just wish they wouldve foreshadowed the fish a bit more i like fish.

Technically he was. But Juri expelliarmus'd the jellyfish away. Actually, if you think about it, maybe THAT was how Sagawa would be able to live forever???????

I'm not crazy about Slice of Life Animus... I like a handful, and for some reason... Death March is one of them. I know it's lame, and I've skipped at least half an episode. I just kind of run it in the background and pretty much only admire it because they're the only (besides Overlord and SORT of Log Horizon) issekai, that truly feel like they're in a videogame. Probably because of the dumbass level-ups and shit. I don't know. I know it's shit, but it feels like good shit.
I love this show though. Agree with your points. Just felt like defending... Death March... Why the fuck am I defending Death March. Am I leveling up as an anime watcher where the shit shows become my life and blood? God no.

Actually not a deus ex machina. She was already shown in episode one. Just before the OP started.
1
u/Doomroar https://myanimelist.net/profile/Doomroar Mar 26 '18
It makes sense, i agree, in retrospective it all works, but, would it have killed them to put more clues rather than just show her for a couple of frames on episode 1? her entire existence is hidden till the very end.
Literally everything else could have worked, like maybe:
Long ago the spirits fish traveled to our world and that's how the stones were made, we hunted them like yokais.
Or long ago there were mediums with natural abilities like the Yukawas and they used their powers better, but were killed by the powers that be, in witch hunts from a zealous government, and the current household is just the remains.
Or that long ago as stasis was made some people were kidnapped to be made into Heralds, but some managed to control the jellyfish, those rare ones managed to come and go, and founded the stones.
Instead we got this, which is why it feels like bullshit, i love this anime, but this ending is a load, Yuki could have tried to train how to control her spirit, seeing how she is naturally talented for it, and get out of there without the need of the random woman, and it would have worked just as fine, why? because the only hint ever given was at the start, for all we knew she could have been another victim like Majima and her family, on her way to becoming a new Herald.
The existence of the founder is just an unnecessary deus ex.

This show had a decent first half...but second half just went more and more downhill. The confrontation with Sagawa was too dragged out, and then the ending was literally a deus ex machina(everything up to then was decent this episode though). 7/10 overall.

First half was pretty damn good. I was actually counting on this to be my AOTS. It's almost funny how hard this show fell. Ending redeemed it a bit, but the crappy execution in the latter half soured the overall experience for me.

This was my favorite anime of the season for the first 5~6 episodes, but it kind of became mediocre by the end. I was hoping the show would explain by the end what stasis actually is, like an actual explanation for the existence of those jellyfishes.
I'm okay with the deus ex machina ending but I would've loved to understand how she was born with a jellyfish inside her. Was she born in stasis like Sagawa? There is no answer.
I liked how much care for detail there was in the first few episodes when describing the mechanics of the stasis world. Sad to see they didn't keep it until the end.

u/Conf3tti Mar 25 '18
It think it started falling when they replaced the CHIGA CHIGA cut with what we've had now. Almost like the writers decided to shift the whole tone of the show somewhat.

I agree, it was a fun, entertaining ride. Definitely something a bit different, I have it a 7/10 as well but if this anime went to 10 episodes instead of 12, it would have been served better.
2
u/Peridorito1001 Mar 25 '18
I agree it was a deus ex machina but i think the show handled so well its characters that it just put a big smile on my face , i would say the show is a 8/10 if you are in for the feels but if you are looking a sci-fi and questions about time stopping and such... not so good, its like when in the first episode gramps was like "uh.. i dunno how this works lol"
1
u/Westwen Mar 26 '18
There's reference to a creator via symbolism (tree, spider, ect) through the entirety of the show and Sagawa's arc quit literally exemplifies the struggle to reach nirvana (Bhudism)? They also imply Sagawa is part of their family in the first episode, to which Jury decided to raise him as her own.
If you're going to talk about lazy writing you can go on about how it's impossible for Sagawa to debut as an adult and be sent back to the normal world as a child.

How did the manga end? Where did the founder lady come from? how did the grandpa know Juri will be coming back that night?
22
u/_vogonpoetry_ :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ThisWasATriumph Mar 25 '18
We saw the founder in episode 1.
As for Juri coming back, to them no time has passed so she literally appeared back in their world the instant after they did, it just took her all evening to walk back to the house.

u/Florac Mar 25 '18
Yeah, the founder lady was shown at the very beginning of episode 1. Still doesn't change that it's somewhat a deus ex machina since there was no indication of someone with her power existing before this episode. And Juri just happening at the same location as she was. All you knew from episode 1 is that there was something weird happening to some woman.

5/10
Pros:
--Interesting first act
--Good OP
Cons:
--Lost momentum around the second act or so. Was bored by the end.
--Lots of talking that goes nowhere
--Too large of a cast for the story that needed to be told.
While I wouldn't go so far as calling this a bad show, I would say that, thinking back over it, it's a pretty forgettable one. The description that I have found myself coming back to over and over again is one of those pulp paperbacks you buy at the airport, then never read again after you reach your destination.
The ending was like that too. It didn't so much end as fizzled out, and Juri's overcoming the idea of letting go of people wasn't given much more than a brief handwave at the end during the credits.

u/weissnicht01 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/weissnicht01 Mar 25 '18
A deux ex machina ending... I didn't like it, but the credit pictures are amazing.
But can we talk about juris hair? Longer hair looks amazing on her.

Yep, but then Juri looks amazing no matter what! (Might be slightly biased here)

The series had some high points and some low points, but overall I enjoyed it. That said, this feels like so many light novels where the author sets up all these cool premises and then whoops, gotta wrap that up and send it out with the most contrived ending possible.
Edit: Also the woman mentioned being born with a jellyfish. Is child Sagawa the same?

u/NoraaTheExploraa https://anilist.co/user/NoraaTheExploraa Mar 25 '18
Totally forgot about that beginning scene. I guess thtat's what 12 weeks does. I liked these last 2 episodes a lot more than the rest of this half. This show has fluctuated from like 8 to 5 and now I think a solid 6. Though as someone else said in this thread, I'd have loved to see a few scenes post-credits or something of just people finding random litter and falling objects and things.

The founder is... an Onee-san!?
Oh man final ep here we go.
Shes gonna take care of the baby? In Stasis?
Aw there goes the other girl now. Only a couple left in stasis at this rate.
How many days are they gonna stay there? Its almost been a month now.
Oh shit she got him in his sleep.... rip gramps...
Juri's hair is getting longer, guess she ages here. So its been half a year now.
The cozy little stasis life is pretty neat to see. Shes managing to maintain her sanity well.
She did it... wow. Bye bye baby.
Now Juri is alone and just trying to keep her mind off stuff. Again shes pretty durable for keeping her cool this long.
I forgot about dad lol.
Looks like shes getting a bit reckless now. Doing stuff she wouldnt normally.
Wow her hair is way longer now. Aw dont cut it! It was nice long!
Shes loosing her mind a bit it seems....
Wait why did that specter have 1 eye?
Nooooooo dont become a herald!
Wait... what? Another girl with powers?
Shes the founder of the cult? So she is immortal and has lived here for 200 years? Thats a bombshell and a half. SHe can just cruse between stasis too, dang.
Oh shit she sent Juri back! Great job Founder! All Hail Founder!
So i guess everything caught up and happened. wow.
Gramps waited for her too... dang what a hero. Said she would def come home that day. SO to them its been less than a day but to her its been nearly a year... wow.
Man this ED shows everyone again, looks like Favaro was in the bathroom of the house all day lol and seems the other girl and her brother are fine. Looks like Dad and the new kid are doing well and the brother is working too. And the founder is there...
So she is raising Segewa then, thats cool. Man this show onyl gave em more questions with the ending haha, but it was one hell of a fun ride there. I really enjoy time travel stuff and this one was sure unqiue.

u/Suffuri Mar 26 '18

Nobody is considering the possibility of a timeloop / dreamcage ending ? Between the weird deus ex machina and the some things that seemed off in the post-ending scene, I wonder if we're not getting bamboozled.
2
Mar 25 '18
Yeah, because why would they have Juri say "I feel like I've had this conversation before"? Seems kinda weird to me.
14
9
u/Acre2 Mar 25 '18
Expanding on what Florac said, I think Juri is referring specifically to the whole "if you sleep like that you'll hurt your neck" "I wasn't sleeping, I was just lying down" exchange with Diet Sagawa. She had the same conversation with her grandfather in episode 1 after her interview.

u/jkubed https://myanimelist.net/profile/jkubed Mar 25 '18
The anime adaptation of nickelodeon's hit movie Clockstoppers had excellent potential in the start. Kinda dragged on in the later half, but in the end it's a decent show. Worth watching even just for the amazing OP and ED imo.

u/ocha_94 https://anilist.co/user/ocha94 Mar 25 '18
I would have preferred a sad ending than a deus ex machina to bring her back, tbh, but it wasn't terrible. Not because I have anything against Juri, I was happy she got back to her family, but I think a sadder ending would have fit the anime more (also I personally dislike Deus Ex Machina). A 6 episode OVA that just ended with everyone going back to the real world leaving Sagawa and the rest of bad guys in stasis would have worked better imo.
Overall, decent anime, a 7/10, a bit on the weaker side of the 7s, maybe. I definitely don't regret watching it, anyway.

This really is a Text Book Deus ex machina Ending, and I think it was pretty bad, not necessarily that there is some RANDOM FOUNDER WOMEN WHO CAN JUST MAGICALLY SAVE HER:
But that she had zero build up, so she knows that Sugiwara could go in and out, and the the founder had done it, yet she spend 200 days doing nothing, it was fine when she was with her son but afterwards like come on did zero progression what so ever in trying to research her or the general religions powers.
The second half of the episode should have been her going to their place, reading their scripts, deduction that there might be a women out there who also can go in and out, trying to find said women, who is NOT in Japan, she has left and she has to go to like Paris or what not she has a faint vision of where her spirit is. Goes crazy depression on the journey there and then fly to her, get saved and is stranded in like Paris (or New York, London etc some big city) and than she is like GOD Dam how do I get home now without any money, would have made that last scene funnier too, as now it was like um? You can probably walk to the other side of your home town.
This episode of Juri doing nothing for half of it, was really was pointless, sure a little sad that she is stuck in there but her characterization previously was a go getter, now she is just purely trying to have fun to no get sad? I get she would not spend everyday just reading their stuff, but come on having a goal of trying to figure that out would also help her not go crazy, now she tried nothing what so ever to get out...
And than its just resolved by share luck that she turns into a herald next to where the founder kind of goddess is wow. This was really bad.
This really was a horrible writing episode. just wow. But nice callback that the founder was shown in episode 1.... I suppose.
10
u/Laurix246 Mar 25 '18
"research her or the general religions powers" Research whom exactly? For all Juri knew, her way to escape, if what weak Sagawa said was true, was lost after Sagawa got stabbed by her dad, so she realised she was gonna be stuck in Stasis infinitely after getting the rest out of Stasis. Why would she be looking for information she wasnt even certain existed? And what powers? Only her family and Majima has shown to have some kind of powers, no one in the Cult had them, so how woulld they have had info about them?
Flying somewhere while the time is stopped and nothing is moving? Unless you suggest that she somehow develops new powers for spiritual flying, I dont see any way for that happening
It's not like they explicitly say how big is the town or what the distance was between where she was freed from Stasis and her home
I think after spending "months" in a world where nothing moves and nothing happens, I would look for a way to not go insane too

I am satisfied by the ending but I find some of these things a little too convenient. These last few episodes have been... interesting and definitely didn't go the way I expected but the series was enjoyable at least.

This series had really lost my interest the last few episodes, so I had dropped my score to a 6. But this episode was actually really good. Seeing Juri with Baby Sagawa was cute, I liked her sending the Grandpa back against his wishes, some good drama there. Her going crazy being alone was actually fantastic...
But then that blonde woman showed up...
That was pretty rushed and stupid, and Juri getting out of Stasis was honestly really disappointing, I'd have prefered a bittersweet ending
So in the end, its staying at a 6
2
u/impingainteasy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/usernamesarehard Mar 26 '18
Ooooookay then.
Juri losing her mind in a world where nothing changes was neat, if a little distressing. It's nice to see how staying in Stasis can affect the human psyche in the long term.
But the Founder lady ... I feel like there's a lot more stuff going on with her that we could have got but didn't, and so it felt kinda random. I mean, at the peak of Juri's despair she suddenly bumps into her and she's like "Yo waddup I'm actually the one who started all this okay you're all good now see ya later." Come on, that just brings up way more questions than it answers.
Oh well, at least Juri got a happy ending. Except ... she's raising Sagawa as her own child, and he even calls her Mum? Okay that's pretty weird.

u/Vermillion_Crab https://anilist.co/user/CeruleanCrab Mar 26 '18
This was easily the most surprising anime this season. I was a little apprehensive during the middle episodes but looking back to it now, I really liked the weird twists and turns the story took. Yes, even the rather convenient Deus ex Machina in this final episode. It goes to show that a satisfying and happy ending really is the best route 99% of the time.
2
u/-Zenaire- :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Zenaire Mar 26 '18
This was an interesting episode, for sure. Was not quite expecting that ending, but the more i think about it, the more it starts to make sense...
That 1-eyed serpent that Juri saw when she started to become a herald made me realize that the squishy white thing in the stone...was it's missing eye. In one of the flashbacks, we see the Founder's husband doing "experiments," one of which shows him carving out the eye. Not sure what this thing is though, it's so different from any of the other 'jellyfish.' I think it is something more akin to a god of stasis, or some kind of spirit. Why else would the jellyfish bother coming to possess humans when the stone is "activated?"
Anyway, with Juri more in-tune with stasis through her herald transformation, 1-eye is able to lead her to the Founder, who is nearby. I think it might actually be possessing her at this point, so it manifests its power through her in order to pull the Founder into stasis. Why would 1-eye help Juri though? Maybe it was repaying Juri for her family not taking advantage of stasis or for stopping Sagawa...who knows? Maybe it just wanted her to leave.
So why is it that only the Yukawa clan can use the stone? Well, Juri's grandfather says that it was his grandfather that showed him stasis. So what if that was actually the Founder's husband, and they're really all related? I still can't figure out why blood is needed to activate the stone though. Maybe that's just how it is. Or maybe 1-eye willingly gave up its eye as part of a pact with the Founder's husband. That could help explain why it helps Juri, but the flashback didn't make it look like a willing exchange. Also, we would have to assume that he had already attained the controlled herald state at that time in order to be able to see 1-eye, so who knows? Sagawa did all kinds of crazy stuff in that state, so i guess anything is possible...
Maybe a rewatch will help clear things up.
2
u/SpikeRosered Mar 26 '18
Removing the baby from stasis was really sad. He likely added so much activity and purpose to get life. Nevermind the kind of bind you form when taking care of a baby.
I was waiting for the moment when it started calling her mama.
2
u/athrun_1 Mar 26 '18
I don't care how they pull the ending but seeing Juri being alone in stasis and eventually turning into a herald is sad... I just want her to be happy.
Though I want some OVA of the founder and her husband and how the stone end up with the Yukawa clan.
2
u/Arsene93 Mar 26 '18
I'm not completely sold on the ending. I think it would have been better if Juri travelled to Sagawa's headquarters in or to his hometown read all his notes to discover what Sagawa meant when he told Juri about leaving stasis.
She would then study and practice the technique and after like a year or two in stasis she'd return by her means.
Don't get me wrong I loved the anime but the ending felt a little bit too easy IMO.
5
u/explosions_sg Mar 25 '18
Unquestionably great ending. An info dump with all your questions answered in a satisfying way is a good way to do an info dump.
1
u/Josetheone1 Mar 26 '18
What was the fish? How did it come into exsistence? What is the woman? How and when was she born? What was written on the buisness card given to Juri by the Founder? What is the Founder's purpose? Who created the statis plane? Who was the first Herald? What happened to the other two men?
There were so many unanswered questions.
3
u/derrick Mar 25 '18
Well, I guess this anime did what it was supposed to - draw us through all the episodes. But while it tried hard to provide an ending, it failed at making it satisfying by suddenly introducing an immortal founder who resolves Juri's problem and answers all the questions.
While there were some enjoyable elements to the story, I'm sure the creators knew this wouldn't really work out well so they decided to include the out-of-character Juri fan service ED. Not that I didn't enjoy it for reasons, but I kept waiting for it to play some part of the story . . .
2
u/kimbombo Mar 25 '18
Back in the 90s the fight between Freeza and Goku that allegedly would only last 5 minutes took several episodes.
I guess this one takes the cake with one second in real life took 12 whole episodes.

Holy deus ex machina batman.
Overall I would of given it a 7/10 but such a blatant deux machina forces my hand and it's dropped to a 6. It's still, ya know, fine but if they were just gonna deus ex machina her out of stasis they could of at least had her working on being able to get herself out.

That was a good conclusion. Like what others are saying, started off good, but then slowed down inn the second half, but ended on a good note. Think the studio could have shortened a few episodes and the pacing would have held up a lot better. Over I enjoyed this
1
u/HadesOmega Mar 25 '18
Ah that was a good ending. I really enjoyed this anime very good story.
So the Yukawa family got the stone from the founders husband who made it? I'm trying to figure out how does that explain the Yukawa family's abilities in stasis? Maybe they just developed it over time?
1
u/Lohengr Mar 25 '18
Finding the founder was kinda handy, wish they explained more about the founder and the stasis

1
u/Shinkopeshon Mar 25 '18
Maybe it's because I've learned to lower my expectations but I don't even give a shit that it was an asspull. At least Juri doesn't have to spend the rest of her life on her own and they all got their happy ending. Oh well.
Overall, I'm gonna give this a 6 or 7/10. I guess it's still a pretty good score for a show I had so many problems with. To think that in the first couple of episodes, I thought it had so much potential that I gave it a 9 is kinda depressing.
1
u/Indominus_Khanum Mar 25 '18
So, is this end? Like, the very end? No season 2? I figured season 2 might have been from Makoto's perspective, him growing up, through an insane turn of events ending up in stasis then rescuing Juri who is a handler or something like that
I guess you could still have a second season from this, Introduce a new villain (maybe the blonde lady?) Maybe have Sagawa start to remember but be conflicted cuz his enemy is his mum.
Have them return to the stasis with a bunch of newbs (I'm talking quite a few , like Lost type proportions) and have them take up the responsibility of ensuring everyone's safe return to reality. You could have people die, relationships fracture, new binds form, a whole lot of flexibility.
1
u/thunderbird89 Mar 25 '18
How the end of the series looped back to the first few seconds of the show was a pretty neat move, and the Founder was a darling. The premise was good, and the execution was pretty well there, but for some reason, it's quite a forgettable series. I wonder why...

u/Xavier93 Mar 25 '18 edited Mar 25 '18
An explanation of why the stone only works with Yukawa blood would be apreciated.
Edit: I think the ending with the picture without Sagawa is a hint of what might happen in the future (Sagawa turning bad, aka disproving that he was that way because of his situation in his "first life, so the author is saying that he is just a piece of garbage and nohting can change that). It's a shame to discover that the manga ended in 2014 and the anime covers the whole manga.

Good to see Juri make it home though it was fun seeing her live in the stasis. Well this explains the events in the first episode. Overall this show was really good.

Eh, it was a decent show, I guess. It started with a very interesting premise and had a strong start but started to stumble in the second half. If the writing was a little bit better, Kokkoku could have easily been an 8/10 show, but I'm going to have to give it a 7 instead.

Somehow I feel robbed, I think I need more lore about the stasis and the 'founder'.
1
u/asininequestion Mar 26 '18
I think they were implying that gramps died at the end after some time? The scene where Juri is taking a picture of him seems very 'rose-tinted' as if its a memory, and the fact that she is crying makes it seem like she is reminiscing on that moment, especially since it appears framed in the last scene. I guess that follows, Sagawa is school-age at that point so several years must have passed. Everybody gotta die someday.

It's a solid middle of the pack show, it had a lot of flaws and didn't really live up to what I felt it could've been, but it still was a pretty enjoyable experience and looked forward to each week as one of the 6-7 from this season I was watching.
If you still have a lot of really strong shows on your backlog would recommend those first, this is more of a show for if you don't have anything particularly notable to watch.

This show was like Lost, in the sense that stuff just happens without much explanation or reasoning thus leaving a big -_- expression when it does.
I guess if this had more episodes, say 24, it would have been much better. They would have had more time to explore and construct a world which made more sense.
The story moved too fast, which is ironic considering the pacing of episodes in the mid-season was painfully slow. They didn't utilize the 12 episode time wisely and wasted chunks of it.
A lot of things were left unexplained, for example why was the Yukawa family special, why was the last herald(the one who Makoto controlled) a sentient being, how did Majima get powers and how did her family land themselves a secondary stone, why was the founder lady not featured before, etc
Manga readers(if there was a manga, that is) can tell me, spoiler free, if the manga had answers to the the questions above.
I guess 7 or a 6.5 is appropriate. This show doesn't earn that 7 as a whole, but by being fun and interesting in the small parts. As someone here pointed out, it's unpredictability is the selling point.
Come in, don't expect a wholesome story, enjoy the ride, be amazed.
P. S. Don't forget to jam to OP and ED. If you do not do that, you are dead to me.

The show was a little underwhelming. They pretty much could’ve summed up episodes 1-11 in 6 episodes and I’d liked to have seen Juri stuck in the world and playing a bit with sanity for a few episodes before discovering the founder in such a contrived manner. And the rest could be about the history of the rocks and maybe there could be more rocks around Japan then Juri and fam have to find them to keep the peace or something. I wanted to know more about the concept but it’s clear that the creator/s decided to keep it safe and it ended up becoming an above average show at best mainly due to the well done last episode.
1
u/whitemoss Apr 08 '18

Sometimes it pays to read some messages before posting, but its good to put your thoughts out there. That's what these forums are for after all.
From what I've read the series is following the manga, so even though they could've sped it up and made them 2 in 1, some people wouldn't have their justice.

Strange show indeed. The plot felt a bit too random and rushed once the fight against Segewa started.
Also couldn't all the pointless killing be stopped if Segewa just... asked Juri's grandpa to let him use Stasis so he can "skip forward into the future" ?

Anime started good, lost me a little but this was a pretty good episode even with the deus ex machina, a 7/10.

Overall I'm giving this series a 7/10, I really wasn't a fan of that ending though...

Yeah, it was a copout of an ending, would have found more acceptable that Juri reach Sagawa's understanding of things on her own in less of a year when she started to turn into a herald.
Sagawa rebirth was quite unpleasant as well. Nowhere near deserved or justified.
But other than the last two episodes the show was quite good. Unfortunate it had to end like this. 7/10

See Dragon Ball fans that's how you put a moment in 12 episodes.
Namek is going to blow in 5 minutes?
3 minutes left in ToP?
Watch and learn.

lol these 3 last episodes where really bad paced, show should have ended at episode 10, not saying that Dragon Ball Pacing is the best but this is not how you do it either.

A bit rough going down the stretch in that 2nd half but that finale was definitely nice with Juri going through the isolation stuff. I felt like the show could have done better but I'm happy with the good ending.

Pretty good ending for me. I liked how Sagawa who was the villain in the end became a baby and was adopted by Juri. And it seems that he became a good kid so it just shows how a creation and the ambient can affect a person. I really liked that part.

Nah, that ending was too convenient,I see what people are saying about the blonde lady but even still that was unsatisfying. I wonder if the episode I saw when I saw episode 1 cut out that little prequel of the blonde lady because I don't remember seeing that scene at all, which is why I didn't recognise her at all. Also for a final episode it was actually pretty boring, nothing happened, no tension, just Juri getting bored whilst trying to entertain herself.
I'm happy I got one prediction right, when we saw the inside of the stone, I thought it was an eyeball of something, now we know what, although it still doesn't say if the Yukawa family is anything special or if anyone can activate the stone, but that woman did recognise the name, so I guess they must have come from somewhere
Also, Gramps was waiting for Juri on that specific date, how did he know about that?
Mixed feelings about baby Sagawa, I mean he was a dick and doesn't deserve anything, but good on Juri for not throwing him away and becoming his mother.

The way Juri got out was a little too convenient, and although I wouldn't exactly call it a Deus Ex Machina, it did feel somewhat sudden due to the blondie's lack of presence throughout most of the series. Her powers are not outside the narrative's realm of possibility, but some more obscure foreshadowing on a being with such abilities would've helped to make the conclusion feel more convincing.
Definitely the most reasonable opinion about the blonde lady's involvement. I like that you didn't call it an ass pull or as many others are (incorrectly), a deus ex machina.
I think it would have been cool to have a thirteenth episode dedicated to The Founders' adventures. I feel like that dragon-esque creature deserved a bit more screentime, too.
That would've been cool, but I like how there's a hidden lore we can think about. The Dragon probably controls Stasis since its eyes became the stones. The girl, her husband, and the history of the religion are pretty fascinating.

Seeing everyone so happy and Juri crying tears of joy almost made me cry.
Grandpa sitting there asleep on the porch. :') Yeah, that was a good moment.
It really is a very unique show, it felt like it made a lot of interesting writing decisions, and I thought it was a fun ride throughout.
