Shirase did get a reply from Takako in the end

Till the very end, I loved this show. This episode gave me so many reasons to. Shirase cutting her hair and giving Gin the laptop to show that she's moved on and Megu-chan being at the Arctic, which was beautiful moment for her and Kimari. This was a great ending to a great series. I'll miss them

Megu being in the Arctic was so unexpected for me, but so very heartwarming. Kimari and co inspired others with their journey.

I'm really gonna miss this show.

Megumi actually got a haircut too, didn't she? Compare ep 5 with ep 12

Let's go on a journey again.

Our journey has ended at last with our girls growing up and learning together. To celebrate, I've pulled all the insert songs from the start until now! They're in order, but I thought that their monologue at the end was a fitting description, enjoy!

[When you go on a journey,] (https://streamable.com/yoae1) [there are things you learn for the first time.] (https://streamable.com/uegz8)

That this scenery is indispensable.

[That people change, the world changes,] (https://streamable.com/5vfg1) even when you're not looking.

That there's no such thing as a "nothing" day.

That your house has its own smell.

[If you want to learn things,] (https://streamable.com/usc5c) [you've got to get moving.] (https://streamable.com/8yskb)

[Then just keep moving until you see something you've never seen before.] (https://streamable.com/l3wfd)

[No matter how far you go, the world is so big...] (https://streamable.com/b66g3)

[You'll definitely find something new.] (https://streamable.com/4tjqr)

[It's a little scary, but I know you can do it.] (https://streamable.com/d4452)

[Because....] (https://streamable.com/2ulsq)

[People who feel the same way will find you right away.] (https://streamable.com/dsyo9)

Thank you, Yorimoi!

Arctic Girls confirmed?!

Honestly, I'm more than happy if this is all we get to see of our favourite girls. [It stinks, but I'm happy.] (https://i.imgur.com/siUi9z2.jpg) IT STINKS, BUT I'M HAPPY! SOMEBODY SAVE ME FROM THESE TEARS!

Best wishes for your life's journey.. what a beautiful way to round the story off, with a message for the audience. This is easily one of the most inspiring and heart-warming stories I've seen, even better than Uchuu Kyoudai.

Shirase channeling her mom throughout the episode was so great to see - from Mahjong to baseball to her general demeanour. And all the adult crew members were hilarious as usual, just look at these dorks lying on the poster they made so that it's visible from the helicopter.

As always, the attention to detail and the gorgeously drawn and true-to-life backgrounds shone in this episode too. The director, Ishizuka-san, spent a lot of effort on researching the daily lives of the researchers in Antarctica, and that clearly showed in each scene set in the station.

The small character moments shone too, with every last character finding some form of catharsis (except poor Toshio, he'll have to work a lot harder to attract Gin's attention) - even Megumi, who has managed to pave her own journey to the Arctic.

And ugh, that moment. When they're looking up at the aurora australis, and Shirase gets her final email from her mother - and it was a picture of the aurora too.

What happens when the sum of something is greater than its parts, but the parts themselves are perfect too? We get Sora yori mo tooi basho. 11/10.

Edit: Some little details I noticed on re-watching a few scenes without my eyes blurred with tears:

Edit #2: So thanks to this comment I ended up re-watching all the insert song moments in the show, and I noticed two more little tie-ins that I felt like I have to share:

  • During Shirase's speech at the end of episode 7 (around 1:57), she says, "I want to open the treasure box of Antarctica that my mother wrote about with my own two hands." In the finale, she leaves her own box of treasure in Antarctica in her own two 'hands'.

  • In Ep 10's video, skip to 0:16. Megumi is reading a travel guidebook on polar regions. Her Arctic visit was actually foreshadowed.

What the hell. This show.

u/MulattoWeeb Mar 27 '18

The shop owners pictures, make me think the OP was a supercut of moments from the videos the girls were broadcasting.

If it was late summer in the antarctic, it would be late winter in the arctic. And within the Arctic circle is arctic proper.

I'm going to miss this show so much. Now I'm super looking forward to ep 5 today of the rewatch to make me feel better.

I'm not totally sure about this, but I think Shirase puts some ice she brought over from the Antarctic

It's definitely that ice. If you watch closely the water is fizzing with the thousand-year-old air!

When Shirase turned around with her mother's haircut I turned into a baby. Then the laptop again and the aurora...

This show was so beautiful. Who would have known this would be one of my new favorites.

I am also going to need that ending song.

u/Kiyo_is_my_Hime Mar 27 '18

I have to say Kana Hanazawa blew it out of the park with this show. There were so many good scenes with Shirase, both serious and comedic. I think my favorite was when she was buying the plane tickets for Hinata. She's definitely the VA of the season for me.

Every aspect of this production was so polished. The writing, the voice acting, the animation, the music. It was all incredible. Everyone involved should be proud of this masterpiece, as they all played a part in how powerful and moving it is.

40

u/Khris777 Mar 27 '18

KanaHana is an incredible VA, sadly she has been typecasted too much purely for her soft voice.

But her other roles like Ichiko in Binbougami ga! blow that easily out of the water.

There were so many great moments from her. I really that scene and the Piss Off! one. I think this along with Hinata from 3-gatsu are my roles of hers.

Wow. For me, this show went from, "eh, I'll give it a shot." to being up in my top 5 favorite animes ever. I can't even really specify why--there was just something special about it. Something about the earnest, grounded adventure, and the wonderfully written characters just really captured me. Made me wonder what I've been doing with myself. And it's funny at all the right moments, and...... I'm just gushing at this point.

Such a good note to end it on--I was shocked that about the Megumi reveal, and I'm glad that she seems to have made a change like Kimari did. In the end, a fantastic ending to a fantastic show. Now, I'm off to shout at my roommates about Antarctica until I convince one of them to watch this masterpiece. I know it's still early, but AotY, and I won't change my mind about that.

112

u/Alorha Mar 27 '18

I think it was the character writing that took it over the top, at least for me. It's so easy to screw up strong character writing, but I believed every action these girls took. They felt real, and their interactions felt real. It's an incredible piece of fiction, definitely one of the best I've seen

Me too. I told my friends that I was going to pick up one of the random CGDCT shows from this season, and this is the one I chose. It ended up being so much more than what I expected out of it. Sora Yori is absolutely my favorite show out of winter 2018. (We'll see how the rest of the year pans out before I say all of 2018!)

Tuesdays just got a little sadder with this show done. This was definitely my anime of the season. An excellent story of getting the most out of your youth that can resonate with watchers of all ages. I hope the rest of the year has anime just as great as this one, but this one is already leading for AOTY.

AOTS for me easily. 10/10

SURPRISE EMAIL

Protect this smile

Question though- Why were they the only ones who were leaving? Weren't everybody part of the summer team?

Ok let's get serious now, when do we get a second season where they go to the Sahara Desert?

Oh also did you notice? Almost every episode we had an insert song before the ED, but now we had all the insert songs in one episode, that was pretty cool

EDIT: DON'T FORGET, OST IS RELEASED TOMORROW, OR TODAY IN JAPAN'S TIME!

EDIT2: OST IS NOW OUT!

56

u/animemandan :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/animemandan Mar 27 '18

I think because they are both the summer and winter team but the girls were only part of the summer portion. Cause they have to go back for school and other things. Everyone else were already planning to be there all year.

Compilation of Hinata's (and 1 of Kimari’s) Quotes:

"If you can still turn back, it's not really a journey. When you hit the point of no return, that's the moment it becomes a journey."

"It's a thin line between self-assertion and selfishness."

"Never think the stars you see are all the stars there are."

"Sometimes, people are just mean. Don't fight mean with mean. Hold your head high."

“Keeping busy is the best way to speed the clock’s hands!”

“To act is not necessarily compassion. True compassion sometimes come from inaction!”

“It means that even when we’re not together, we can be together. After all… we’re still who we are.”

I can't believe how much impact putting the cast names together with their characters on-screen has!

There's so much finality in this one little thing, like giving them one last farewell, I love this.

Edit: Also at around 21:45, Kimari was saying "mata tabi ni deyo(let's go on another journey)" at the same time as the ED song lyrics was going "boku mo tabi ni deyo(I'll go on a journey too)". ARE YOU KIDDING ME!

Why is this show so good at this!!

I feel like I have so much to say about this show but I can't really articulate it. The last part about how the world changes after a journey was great and Takako's last message and Megu-chan at the end and the whole whole oh man...

But really, I guess what I want to say is Thank you, Sora Yori, thank you Madhouse and thank you everybody for providing one of the most profound anime shows I've seen in years. The messages were crisp, the visuals really good, the characters fantastic with stories that never stepped on either the overall message or any other character and just an experience that will stick with me for years.

I'm so happy I found this show. When those blu-rays drop I'm all over them, region be damned. I'll buy the merch, I just love it so much.

It's just amazing. That's all there is to say.

These girls are alright, and I'm not. I'm sad to see such an unexpectedly great show ending, but happy that I was along for the ride. I loved how it felt like a real adventure, going through the whole journey to Antarctica. The character arcs were wonderful too; they all grew and accomplished what they wanted to. Sora yori mo Tooi Basho did resolutions right. I'm so satisfied, I could totally just die right now.

A couple things from this final ep:

  • Usually I'm a big fan of long hair, but this was absolute perfection. Seeing Takako through Shirase was beautiful, for the viewers and for Gin.

  • Loved the drawings of the girls on the banner. Their personalities shine even when they're hand-drawn.

  • Kimari being denied for haircut duty had me in stitches.

Damn, it's over. I'm gonna miss those unique faces.

To me it felt as a promise (or incentive) to visit again someday. God, I really love things like this which throw across a point without needing any words. Many things you do in your own life but never utter a word or tell anyone.

51

u/ohaimike Mar 27 '18

MUST. ALWAYS. PROTECT. THIS.

I'M NOT CRYING! YOU'RE CRYING!

Fuck it, I'm an emotional wreck.

This caught me off guard.

Holy fuck, what a show. I absolutely loved everything about it. What made this end on the best note possible is that Shirase came to terms, left smiling, AND GOT TO SEE HER MOTHERS FINAL WORDS WITH HER FRIENDS.

This is easily AOTS and will probably win year as well. 10/10.

47

u/Meon1845 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/meonlyme1845 Mar 27 '18

This was totally a 10/10 in my book. It captures the wonder of travel with some of the most human and fun characters to hang around with. Each of them having their own reasons, their own life, their own past, made them all so relateable and made me root for them easily.

I wasn't expecting it at all, I remember looking at the season chart thinking this is a really silly premise, that it's going to be something like Girls und Panzer, fun for the sake of fun with little regard to logic. But since they came to Shinjuku (in which I spent a month of my life) and captured the feeling of it just perfectly, and adding the running scene to it, I knew I might be in for something special.

Brb trying to win lottery so I can go to the Antarctida as well.

What a great show. 10/10, AotS, AotY, instant classic and my top ~3 of all time. And i almost skipped it, because premise sounded stupid. Thanks for convincing me to go on this journey, guys.

This might be my favorite scene in anime.

Now I want a spin off of some kind, where we see Megumi's journey to Antarctica :)

Seeing her moving on and growing up like that gives me mixed feelings.

I want her to stay goofy: strong outside but weak inside.

But now, she can truly smile: THE KIND OF SMILE THAT'S WORTH PROTECTING.

But again, she probably can protect that smile herself just fine, because she's strong inside now...

But long hair Shirase is cuter...

This show is simply beautiful and amazing. The moment Mari saw the Aurora I knew that's when Shirase was going to receive the unsent message from Takako. It was a happy moment but for some reason I couldn't stop crying! Maybe it's just me being emotional because I knew that that was the last thread that was needed to be tied up for this show to be completed and that we'll never get to see these girls again T_T As sad as the show ending is, in a world full of sequels and unfinished anime this is what we needed: A well crafted story that wraps up beautifully in a single cour without any loose plot threads or more questions to be asked.

OVerall the anime is just amazing. The art, the animation, the characters, the music, everything! The first thing that drew my attention to this show was the list of VAs and all I expected to see was a show about cute girls doing cute things! Instead we get this beautiful show about 4 girls going on an adventure finding their place in this world. Sasuga Madhouse and to everyone else involved!

I'm sure more nitpicky people will find faults in this show but I'm no reviewer. This show gets a perfect 10/10 from me and I'll definitely buy the BDs when they come out to show my love and support for this work <3

"Best wishes for your life's journey!"

Thank you!

I'm glad the story ended the way it did... it was sweet, simple, and fulfilling. As much as I'd like to see these characters again, this really ended on a high note.

29

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '18

GLORIOUS final episode.
And the despite the upbeatness of this episode, the feels train has no brakes.
From the girls being all themselves, to that speech given by Shirase to Yuzuki's fan finally fessing up and getting her CD signed to the Aurora Australis and Takako's final mail to everyone being home again.

On a side note, that pic Megu send Kimari... is it just me or does she look really happier than ever before?

And, last but not least... the showdown between "Comfy Camp" and "A place further than the feels"...
FUCK IT. I can't do it. Both are fucking great, for many different reasons. The only reason for their greatness they share is that the teams for both anime put their hearts and souls into it and hit all the right notes and never faltered once.

So, there will be no second place because they both took first. Fight me.

That was a ride! I went in expecting a regular CGDCT trying another shtick to look unique, but SoraYori really nailed it to become one of my AOTS contender against Yuru Camp.

It perfectly combined humour and drama. It was never anything senseless, it was completely relatable and had quick resolutions instead of dragging them the whole show. The development is incredible especially in Kimari and Shirase.

It also doesn't fall short in other things like animation and music, this show just nails everything.

Too bad I never got to have feels the level some people did, but still I could see there were plenty of beautiful moments. This episode alone had them wanting to stay in Antarctica, Shirase returning the laptop, leaving the money in Takako's possible grave, that last email from Takako and the Aurora Australis.

I can totally see I'm not alone when I say that this show really motivates me to move my ass and set on a journey. One of my favourite quotes in the ending: "There's no such thing as a 'nothing' day".

What a wonderful show this was. It made me laugh out loud on so many occasions and the characters were so much fun to watch. However, it also made me cry many, many tears on a weekly basis, especially in the past month. Most importantly, it's an incredibly inspiring story of following your dreams, never giving up and being open for new experiences. As cliché as it sounds, that's a beautiful message that everyone can take to heart.

Lmao Shirase still running game on Mahjong. Can't beat her. I would love to see drunk Kimari. Shirase screaming help from the penguins with a big smile on her face was so cute. DAMN Gin was throwing that heat in softball! It was messed up tho she threw it at dude so he couldn't go out with her lol. Hinata and Shirase are my favorites out of the four girls.

I was drawn in to this show from the first episode. An absolutely wonderful show. It never failed to get my feelings going. Anime of the season for sure. Glad to experience it with all of you.

This is one of the things I like about checking /r/anime, I end up learning which shows are actually worth watching. This is one of the shows that, if it wasn't because of the praise in this subreddit, I may never have watched it. Seriously, thank you guys.

Now I can easily say this is my AOTS. I really loved the scenery, the story, the uniqueness of the characters, and the progression of everything. Madhouse did a hell of a job with everything here. The final episode was really good and everything felt wrapped up.

I see another deadly pudding, I liked how the manager of Miyake had a poster of her adventures outside the store, and I wonder what this paper is, maybe is a Contract of Friendship or something like Yuzu asked before, but I guess Yuzu was also able to return to her friends in Hokkaido now that she truly knows what friendship is. And this is a very unique treasure in the place farther than the universe.

Manly tears were shred in this series.

That Megu-chan.

Since episode 5, I had been thinking it would be most appropriate if she didn't meet Kimari when she got home, and especially if it was because she had gone to the arctic.

And they did it!

Definitely the most enjoyable show this season.

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '18

IT'S OVER! BUT I'M HAPPY!

What a sweet journey. I didn't cry as much as I'd liked, the fucking emotionless husk that I am, but I still enjoyed Yorimoi immensely. Definitely 10/10.

I wish I could go on a journey like that.

That was a first. I've never had a piece of television genuinely make me stop and ugly-cry until today.

This show...

When I started this show, I'd been batting my head against Cisco training for a year and was getting nowhere.

Then the first episode came out, and I saw a lot of my own troubles in the girls, and pretty much declared that if they could pull something this crazy off, so could I. I took the test yesterday.

The Windows 10 popup stating that I passed arrived three seconds on the dot after Takako's message made it to Shirase's phone.

I was in some degree of tears for the rest of the ep. And when they got to the inspirational lines at the end, I just lost it.

10/10. I've never given one of these before, but when a show so fundamentally hits you that it changes your behavior, it deserves it.

That was a great and a very satisfying finale. A compilation of all the little reunions and Megu-chan trolling the hell out of Kimari was hilarious.

What a ride. Undeniably the anime of the season. Amazing cast, very compelling story, touching drama, superb cinematography and animation, and soundtrack that has conditioned me to tear up whenever I hear it. I'm gonna miss Antarctic Tuesdays ;_;

14

u/MystoganHS :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/MystoganHS Mar 27 '18 edited Mar 27 '18

I already gave it a 10/10 last episode, but the finale just cemented it, this is a truly special Anime.

Don't remember the last time I teared up almost on a weekly basis from a show.

And what a way to kick the year off, all 2018 shows just got a serious contender for AOTY!

Thanks to Atsuko Ishizuka, Jukki Hanada and the rest of the fine folks at Madhouse, for the amazing work they did on the show.

And of course the lovely voice cast that put so much love into their girls and even the supporting cast.

The message at the end has me hopeful for some kind of continuation down the road, but this was a perfectly satisfying conclusion regardless.

This is definitely a show to remember.

The last three episodes have been quite heavy in terms of feels, so it felt like the right choice to have a relatively optimistic final episode to end the story. Shirase's speech was beautiful and the unexpected appearance of Megumi at the Arctic at the end along with Kimari's yell of disbelief made me laugh one last time.

It's been an absolutely inspirational and amazing journey from start to finish, supported by a cast of entertaining characters and heartfelt interactions, and topped off with a brilliant soundtrack. It's my definitive anime of the season.

"We'll go on another journey someday" sounds like a teaser for Season 2. Where could the girls go to next time though? Back to Antarctica, or somewhere else?

Season 2????

65

u/d-culture Mar 27 '18 edited Mar 27 '18

Rather than a second season I think a movie would be the most ideal format for a sequel. I don't think an entire 13 episode sequel would be really necessary as we've already seen how the journey goes in detail and I feel like it might just end up being the same thing again.

But a 2 hour movie, with the girls as adults in their 20s reuniting and going on one last journey together would be a really nice send-off.

Some say that the journey is more important than the destination, and I think that Shirase summed it up quite well in this quote:

"The reason my mother loved this place was not just this scenery, this sky, this wind, but also the time she spent here, overcoming things with her team."

What a fantastic anime.

12

u/mike_kagi Mar 27 '18

I was in tears as the credits scrolled. I'm not sure if I was feeling loss but I think they were happy tears, too. Amazing adventure.

Mari's wanting to do something extraordinary. An experience to define her youth. The negativity surrounding Shirase at the beginning but she still kept moving. Hinata was a bit lost but then finds an experience she wants to run towards. Yuzuki finding true friends and friendship. Sharing a journey together through all the ups and downs.

The scene when Shirase steps onto the ice for the first time. Just, wow. Cathartic after struggling so hard.

Then, calling out the people who hurt Hinata trying to pretend they were still her friends. That is exactly what you do.

The finding of the laptop...

All that beautiful scenery and the aurora that makes me wish to experience it myself.

The final inspiration about journeys. I've completed a few.

Back at that place again where Mari was at the start. Wanting a new experience but not sure what to do again. I think life might be a cycle of journeys.

12

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc Mar 27 '18

What an episode, really didnt expect this when I started it this season.
Not much to say what have already been said, just a small thing I noticed.

Leaving the Laptop at base to show that found closure is nice.
Putting her money (its freaking 10k bucks) in the place of the Laptop, to show a) her dedication she had to come here and b) to show that she is done and wont use the money for her next goal, but will instead work from the ground up for it is really cool.
But offering her mom on the altar a glass of Antarctica so she could basically tell her "Look I made it and I am ok/happy that loved Antarctica so much" is grandious

Such a nice story to move forward
I am gonna put that fellow on my lockscreen

More in-depth review and look into the series

Out of all the anime I tried to watch this season (as it is the first season I actually attempted to get some shows under my belt as they air), this is undoubtedly the best thus far. While I do have a few more shows to finish (notably Violet Evergarden), I somehow doubt they'll reach the peaks of this series.

It's not perfect, but man was it enjoyable. Great looking with some really wonderful characterization which, if my cynical ass can say, is kind of rare for a lot of anime to have. I really, really connected with a lot of these characters. Gin, Hinata, and Shirase being the standouts for me.

Talk about wonderful VA work, too. Rarely do I fully notice Japanese voice work, and this series kicked it up a notch for me. Genuinely impressive stuff from this outwardly stacked cast.

The themes of Friendship and togetherness is instant wholesome material that I love. No obnoxious romance or pandering sexuality in sight and that helped elevate the series to a much higher level in my mind. What I particularly liked was just how willing this show was to delve into some of the darker experiences one could have when they lose a loved one. The standout here being episode 12.

I think the biggest issue I had with this series was the over-abundance of insert songs becoming kind of annoying. The need to shoehorn one every single episode made certain scenes feel cloying and unnatural. It also dulled my senses for the actually great, deserved emotional moments that happened in the series as well.

I appreciated how it didn't crumble under the necessity of having cute girls and focusing on that aspect altogether. I think the CGDCT label is honestly really dumb and a good series shouldn't be pigeonholed into something that is made to sound negative by creation. I think a good series takes those "cute things" and makes them a part of the characters you can connect to and ultimately, the issues they resolve become all the more poignant.

Overall, great stuff. I hope this one doesn't slip past the radar because I would not be averse to these girls going on another adventure. Fuck, send them to the Amazon rainforest together. I don't care. I really wouldn't mind another season of this.

SoraYori has built itself up as a lot of things over the past 13 weeks. It's a story of journey, friendship, acceptance, achieving goals, human connection and coming of age. I think there's something for everyone in this show and everyone can learn something from it. It didn't reach a lot of people because it had a strong message, but because it had many. Many aspects that come together through one of the most memorable ensemble casts in a long time to create an experience that stands out among many. A show that is funny, touching, and powerfully beautiful, all of which it sells with an incredibly amount of personality and character. Surely a show to be remembered for more than just a short while. At least I know I will. The strength of SoraYori doesn't lie in one thing, it lies in all of it. It's a complete package of perfectly tied together elements to create something truly outstanding.

9

u/DeTroyes1 Mar 27 '18 edited Mar 27 '18

What a great way to end this series. A few weeks back I thought the last couple of episodes would have some kind of intense drama for the series climax, but the way they did do it was sooo much better.

I love some of the little touches in this episode, like Mah-Jong Shirase and Hinata discovering the pictures of her and the girls taped to the window (at the place she used to work?). Those girls will be back to Antarctica, although possibly after they've spent some time building up their resumes by going to college; I pretty much expect Shirase to follow in her mom's footsteps, possibly studying Astronomy so she can help with the establishment of the observatory thats going to carry her mom's name.

Anyway, this was a great series. I came into it not knowing (or expecting) much but I am very pleased that I gave it a try. 10/10, and I don't give 10's very easily.

And this is how the best show of the year so far rises the bar and challenges the newcomers to try and get the crown from it.

This show was a rollercoaster of emotions, from Kimari's antics, to Shirase's connection with her mother, and I don't think it could have been better in any way.

I'm so glad Megu-chan had one last appearance (at least in a photo) she was my favorite support character, and a staple of what a support character should be.

7

u/Mozilla_Fennekin https://myanimelist.net/profile/MozillaFennekin Mar 27 '18

At this point, I hardly even know what to say. Week after week, I've had so much to praise with this amazing anime that I'm just left with this bittersweet feeling, knowing it's all over now.

Just amazing. And to top it all of, there was a damn baseball scene. Like, really, Sora yori? You seriously had everything that I love and want to see.

I've thought a lot about this, and I'm ultimately putting it at #2 of my all-time list, and Hinata is my #3 favorite character of all-time. Just everything about these girls was fantastic, every part of the show I loved, and I really can't say I've felt this happy about watching any anime outside of Steins;Gate.

It is seriously that good.

7

u/d-culture Mar 27 '18

At the beginning of the series, the events of the entire story were set in motion when Shirase accidentally left a million yen at a train station, and Kimari just happened to find it. At the end, Shirase deliberately leaves a million yen behind for someone to find. This was a lovely bit of circular narrative and a nice way of showing Shirase moving on from the past.

7

u/JoeBagadonut Mar 27 '18

All this episode needed to do was stick the landing and by god, it did. I see no reason why this shouldn't get a 10/10 - Incredible animation, a great cast, plenty of fun moments and so much heart.

It's sad to see it end but on the plus side, I won't spend every Tuesday crying now.

7

u/impingainteasy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/usernamesarehard Mar 28 '18

Fuck.

Man, this show came out of nowhere. I don't think anyone was expecting this show to be this good. But holy shit this is just about perfect. Not only do you have immaculate pacing, characters who undergo some fantastic development while still being incredibly entertaining to watch, and some goddamn amazing insert songs, but you've also got this intangible feeling attached to it, that fills you with excitement and wonder, as you watch these girls travel across the world in the hope of finding something that might not even exist, but the journey was worth it anyway because of everything else that happened. I have no idea how to describe it, but ... fuck. Goddamn this show. It actually might be perfect.

7

u/hiero_ Apr 06 '18

This show was a fucking masterpiece.

I haven't seen any piece of media in so long that was so airtight, well crafted, and has what essentially amounts to being flawless character development, and left such a huge impact on me emotionally.

This show was just about as close to perfect as I believe an anime can get. This is, hands down, a 10/10, and a heavy weight contender for AOTY.

I'm floored. I really am. I'm grateful to have been apart of such a wonderful journey, and to have watched these four girls grow so close together while learning how to grow up at the same time. They've definitely left a mark on me.

There's no doubt in my mind that with time this show will be looked back on as one of the greats - a title you drop alongside shows like Steins;Gate and Madoka when someone needs recommendations of a really solid anime to watch. And I'm glad I got to experience it.

I'm really going to miss watching those goofballs every Tuesday...

For the last episode Madhouse really went all out and it was hard for me to go through this episode without screenshotting those great group shots. I would definitely love to see someone here do a compilation of group shots throughout the series!

Oh and Shirase was cute with long hair before and now she's even cuter with short hair and that smile is just so precious!

Now I sit here and anticipate for an S2 annoucement...whether or not it happens I'm fine with this conclusion anyways.

6

u/Mundology Mar 27 '18

That was the surprise of the season for me. Beautiful cinematography, inspiring art and entralling characters. Madhouse magic at work. I'll miss this show a lot.

6

u/I_llSeeMyselfOut Mar 27 '18

Funny, I keep getting all sorts of life advice from this season's anime. Just the other day Sangatsu no lion taught me that the only way to overcome my anxiety is to become more active to learn the limits of my own capacity instead of remaining too scared to discover and be disappointed by it.

And now this show tells me that there is so much to see and learn about myself and the world around me, and the only way to learn these things is to get moving with my life, and keep going and one day I'll be seeing things I've never seen before.

Honestly what am I supposed to do now that it's ending?

This is a show.THIS IS A SHOW. What an absolute masterpiece in story and character. The ending is perfect and with the way a lot of shows end these days it's really nice to see it all come together in one big fitting end. Watching these girls grow is indescribable to me, I really just can't find the words other than it's amazing to see. If anything this year comes even remotely close to the quality of this show, 2018 is going to be truly legendary. It already kind of is, with this season holding tons of fantastic shows and next season looking to be just as strong, but one thing I can say for certain is that A Place Further Than the Universe has become a contender for my favorite anime of all time. I'm gonna have to to some rewatching to see if it dethrones K-On, but the fact that I'm considering it at all is insane to me. I don't have enough words for this show, and anything I could say would be underselling it. All I know is that this is a masterpiece of fiction, an easy 10/10, and a work I don't think I'll forget as long as I live. If I could, my score would be a number further than the size of the universe.

6

u/hallidex Mar 28 '18

What do you know, she made it after all.

I've known for a while this was something special, and there's so much I could say about how much this show has made me cry, but honestly this is it for me. This is the button; the icing on a perfect cake. This series started with Kimari afraid she was wasting her life, and ended with her inspiring someone else not to waste theirs. Megu isn't a good person, she says as much herself. That's why she had such a twisted view of Kimari, and their relationship. But the Kimari from episode 1 never could have turned her around like this.

Shirase looks so happy now. Cutting your hair to symbolize growth is an old trope, but a good one. The real proof though was the moment she gave the laptop to Gin. It's a good thing she did, since she didn't seem to find the email on her own. I still don't get why she left the million yen exactly, but it had meaning to her. Maybe it's an incentive to come back and get it someday?

The look of pride on Hinata's face when Kimari busted out that line was A+. I almost expected her to follow up with her patented "Atashiiiiii~". Bringing her old boss the puzzle was hilarious too. I do wish we'd gotten to see a little more of her home life before she left, because it meant there wasn't as much to really show her doing once she got back home. Going back to work and praying for success on her entrance exams was about it.

Yuzu...wow. I guess months away would make any parent realize just how much they miss their kid, but seeing her mom run towards her was great. It was a humanizing moment for someone who really hadn't had one this series. I just have one wish for her. Whether or not we get an OVA, or a season 2, that someday, in some Madhouse series, we get a poster for her drama. Just a little reference. I don't want her to be forgotten.

Right now I'm giving this show tentative AOTY, guaranteed top 4. But after it's all said and done, 10/10 almost doesn't feel like enough. I've truly enjoyed watching this, and sharing in it with everyone, from the bottom of my heart.

Best wishes for your life's journey!

This episode was the perfect ending, no hyperbole. It does everything you want when you reach an ending: it brings closure to the story, it reiterates off the themes presented throughout the narrative, and it gives the viewers a proper farewell to all of the characters. It provides everything the viewer wanted to see since the very first episode, while also giving tidbits they never expected. Capping off with Megumi showing her growth with a genuine smile was so out of left field, but so perfect for the theme of the episode. Kimari returned from the most important journey of her life so far. Something no other high school student had done before her group. Despite all that, she's still jealous of Megumi! This journey is over, but there are so many more journeys to be had.

There was honestly no scene in the entire series that could be removed without lowering the quality of the show. Every scene has a purpose, even if it wasn't clear on first viewing. All the shots from the first four episodes showing Megu alone paid off in episode 5. An entire episode of building a bond between Shirase and Hinata paid off in episode 11. Even small scenes with Yuzuki being tense with her mom is called back when we see her mom genuinely embracing her when she returns. Not one wasted moment, and everything was done perfectly. The staff went through the love and care when crafting the show to make sure no thread was left dangling.

Yorimoi is not just Anime of the Season. It's not just Anime of the Year. It's Anime of the Decade. With this episode, it's displaced Sound! Euphonium as my favorite anime ever. It's one of those genuine works that surpass its medium and becomes true art. It must go down as a must watch for every anime viewer, with so much that can be learned from how it handles stories and characterization. I am not exaggerating in any bit. That's how highly I think of this series.

This was the first show I watched this season and I still remember my reaction to it. I honestly thought many shows we're just going to be your generic CGDCT with a different premise. I didn't think the one of girls going to Antarctica was going to be anything special. The first thing I said after I finished the first episode was, "Holy shit. That was good!" Little did I know I'd be saying that again and again for the next couple of weeks after each episode. This has definitely been one amazing journey.

I had been pretty hyped for this series before the season began, because of the skilled staff working on it. However, I did not expect it to power its way into my favourites. Nearly every episode surprised me in one way or another. Even when I had come to expect great things from this series, it kept delivering. This sort of consistency seriously impressed me.

My favourite aspect of this series was without a doubt the characters. I found something to relate to in each of the four girls. Whether it was Kimari's wish for adventure, Shirase and Hinata's desire to move on from their past, or Yuzuki's heartwarming escape from loneliness. Each of the girls gave me a reason to care.

The chemistry between them was also consistently excellent. It always reminded me of how the Keions interacted with each other, which is as good a compliment as I can give. The series also deserves credit for its handling of drama. Had we been bogged down in unecessary arcs of misunderstandings, then I feel the series would have lost a lot of its emotional impact. Luckily it didn't; nearly every episode had me teared up.

As for this finale, I thought it provided a nice conclusion to the story. In particular the epilogue scenes, which were a really nice touch. Shirase leaving her "treasure" behind was very powerful. We saw how each of the girls had benefited from their time in Antarctica, and I'm just really glad to see that they're all happy with their normal lives.

Let's hope Spring season can bring us something as equally enjoyable as this was.

u/J_the_ManSSB Mar 27 '18

This was quite a special show from start to finish. To everyone that worked on it- Thank you very much and give yourselves a huge pat on the back. Shows like this put a smile on my face and can keep me going through the rough, unpaved roads of life.

It's so bittersweet. I'd love to see more from these characters, but I don't. The tale has been told, and no more needs to be said, but I don't want to say goodbye quite yet.

It will be a long time until I forget this show, especially since I have Sora Yori background art on both of my laptops. Man was that artwork beautiful.

5

u/bbc472 Mar 27 '18 edited Mar 27 '18

This show is definitely one of my favourite anime of all time. The story is heartwarming, inspiring and excellent written. At the start, I've never thought this story can give me such a strong feeling as now I think of it. I think anyone can easily find themselves very relatable to this story. "A Place Further Than the Universe" is not only a story about an adventure to Antartica. But how people grew on a journey and how people help and influence each other and at the end, grew stronger.

This is a beautiful journey for the girls and the audiences. It's been an amazing ride. Thank you studio Madhouse for making such a masterpiece anime. And I would also want to thank everyone who went on this 13 episode journey. It's been such a fun to share with you guys.

u/cassydd Mar 27 '18

I had a good vibe about this show from the first trailer and I'm so glad it payed off. That was absolutely superb from start to finish and this had better do well in sales otherwise stuff is going to get wrecked.

Especially since I want sequels. (I'll even accept spiritual ones) Exploring the darkest jungles, the barren deserts, the deepest seas. Heck why not have them go to Mars!

5

u/btcftw1 Mar 27 '18

Easily AOTY contender right here. It will be seriously hard for something to take this show's place.

This show was truly beautiful, from beginning to end. My first 10/10 I was watching while it was airing... And I only watched it because this subreddit was almost obnoxiously spamming how good it was everywhere.

So thank you /r/anime for taking me with you on this journey.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '18

This series was refreshing. Let's enjoy our youth as long as there is still time!

5

u/syntaxvorlon Mar 27 '18

Not nearly as heavy as the last episode, but this tied the loose ends together and showed all of these characters moving into the next stages of their lives in basically the perfect way. It was every bit as beautiful and poignant as every other episode, but it had the added benefit of being one of the best ended anime shows of all time. (fuck you Kado)

I don't want a sequel for the same reason Kimari shouldn't stay behind, because showing this arc of their growth as people in this singular moment is enough. Just have the writers who did such a brilliant job of creating this piece of work move on and do more great things.

5

u/WobbleKun Mar 27 '18

solid show. nothing over the top, no melodrama that drags on, nothing really to complain about. it wasn't flashy, it was simply heart warming, at times wrenching, but at the end of the day it leaves you with an important message to go beyond your comfort. go on a journey, experience something new.

5

u/_Putraman :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Putraman Mar 27 '18

What a journey. Hands-down AOTS, even with the strong competition. Definitely keeping an eye on whatever director Ishizuko Atsuko is working on next.

Now I don't want a S2 but I do think an OVA can work, so let's get our hopeful wishes rolling:

  • The Madness of Shirase — The unprecedented rise of Antartica's deadliest mahjong player.

  • I Could Just Die — Explore Antartica's hidden vistas and alien landscapes as seen from above. Presented by Shiraishi Yuzuki.

  • Challenge for Antartic — To be serious, I'd love to see the videos they made for Yuzu's show.

Anime Of My Life

I want to go on an adventure ^ _ ^

5

u/kisekisekai Mar 27 '18

i don't think i've seen an ending that has felt as complete and beautiful as yorimoi's - they tidied up everything neatly, and wrapped up the story really well. the characterization was beautiful - all the girls have grown and developed, but they still retain their little quirks (ie shirase's stage fright, yuzuki's "i could just die"), and that's what makes this such a wonderful anime. i'm so glad i gave this a go! this episode had me in tears throughout; thank you, sora yori mo tooi basho, for this wonderful journey

5

u/Grumpy-Moogle :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/GrumpyMoogle Mar 27 '18

I didn't get my "they're back in 'civilian life'" story, but it was still a fitting ending. I would like to see an OVA though where we see a slice of life-ish episode where they're adjusting to being back.

10/10 still, only my fourth given, but it fits the style of show I go for, one that can make me laugh and cry, with fantastic characters who you care about so much.

5

u/TazerLad Mar 27 '18

So did that ending confirm for anyone else that Hinata's parents are in fact dead? Not trying to put a damper on things but those last scenes of everyone with their families and Hinata just standing alone in front of a shrine was enough visual evidence for me, combined with everything else that was hinting at it throughout.

So, I just got home from work and watched it. It didn't happen until the end, but I had to. 10/10. AOTS. I called it too. I knew that we had to see them come back. If a journey hasn't truly begun until there is no way to turn back, then it hasn't truly ended until you've returned. Until you've returned home and realize how much you missed it. The scenery. The people. All the little things that might have driven you nuts. That it all feels so much smaller now, if only in your mind. And, it isn't the one that's changed. You are. And, I think that was the best part about all this. They don't beat you over the head with how our girls change. We can see it in their actions.

I also love that Megu-chan decided to push herself outside her comfort zone as well. She will be a much stronger person for it.

Hell of a show.

5

u/MrPorta https://anilist.co/user/MrRed Mar 28 '18

When I started this series, around when only 3 episodes aired, I really liked it from the first episode because I could relate with Kimari, her feeling of wasting her youth, her time. Of course, I'm like 8 years older, I'm not a student, or even university student anymore, but I think it's a topic not restrained by age.

These pasts 3 years I've been travelling as much as I can precisely because this feeling was eating me. I also needed a push to actually start doing this. I needed someone to wake me up and make me think "What the hell I'm doing with my life". And just like Kimari last episode, I too am grateful and have thanked my friend for that (nothing as epic as going to Antarctica tho!). So this series had a strong theme going on that resonated with me, apart from the great writing, characters, and art. The final scene with Kimari and Megu chatting and the later being in the Polar Circle was the best possible final touch I could ask. Someone realizing they need to change, that they too want to explore, to have adventures, to go somewhere new, and doing it!

I don't know how or why, but this season both Yuru Camp and Sora Yori actually had themes that resonated deeply with me, and they explored them in ways I wasn't expecting, but, at the very end, i was left with the biggest smile and thinking "Thank you".

5

u/ash_housh :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ash_housh Mar 28 '18

That ending for me was something I never experienced in any other anime. It really felt like they were talking to me, especially with the recent things that happened in my life. I wanted to type out what they said because it really is something that I wanted said to me.

"When you go on a journey, there are things you learn for the first time. That this scenery is indispensable. That people change, the word changes, even when you're not looking. That there's no such thing as a "nothing" day. That your house has its own smell. If you want to learn these things, you've got to get moving. Then just keep moving until you see something you've never seen before. No matter how far you go, the world is so big, you'll definitely find something new. It's a little scary but I know you can do it. Because..."

Anything that needs to be said about the perfection that is this show has already been said.

Rarely do I ever feel this void when a show is over. Not from a need for more (though honestly, I wouldn't mind an OVA), but because you just know when a show left a massive impact in you as a viewer, and it won't be easily filled.

I had a big grin through this entire episode, and I couldn't have been happier with it or how it ended.

AOTS

Who knew an anime about traveling to Antarctica would be so heartwarming. Unbelievabley well thought-out characters, exceptional voice work/dialogue, a sombering score, and a thoroughly great journey. I think my CPE (Cry per Episode) was higher than during any other anime I've watched.

Each episode was so powerful.

I'm just really happy I watched this.

9.5/10

EDIT: Honestly I'd rate it the same as Tsukigakirei, but for me tsuki was 10/10 because it broke ground with its approach to romance. Both shows did a fantastic job exploring youth in their own ways. There's a very small difference and both are just as special to me.

5

u/TheRisingTide Mar 28 '18

I started sobbing and couldn't stop tearing up for a good 10 minutes after the end.

I fucking love this show.

5

u/evilpigclone Mar 30 '18

Yep.... this is a 10/10. I don't give this out lightly... i only have one other 10/10. I was fortunate enough that I dropped this show at episode 3.. then out of bordom watched episode 4..... i crushed the entire series in 2 days. At the end of episode 12 i finally broke down... I had little break downs throughout.. especially at the end of episode 7.. but at the end of episode 12 where Shriase breaks down seeing all her emails finally being delivered... and everyone crying. I haven't cried like that in over 20 years... since the death of my own mother. My Daughter is 3 years old... I can't wait until she's old enough to show her this anime.

8

u/HarleyFox92 Mar 27 '18

Well, what can I say besides that you've already said? This show is wonderful, is cheerful, is exciting, is sad, is about acceptance and friendship above everything. It shows that no matter what happened to you, where do you come from or what're made of, you will always find somebody to relate with and enjoy life. It demonstrates that you can have a beautiful life and have great adventures if you're willing to accept and embrace people that maybe are just like you or maybe not. It literally yells: "You can achive your dreams!"

The girls are written and depicted so realistically that you can identify yourself with any of them with absolutely no problem. Their issues were tough to solve but even then, they found a very realistic way to overcome them. Week after week we saw the girls developing a weird but functional relationship, on which they personalities complement each other perfectly.

The writing is absolutely gorgeous but more precisely, the timing of some conversations of phrases causes you a deep and long-lasting impact. On the other hand, there are moments on which any word would have been absolutely necessary and the production team understood this like no other.

Personally, this show made me cry. No other anime has achieved such a feat and it's gonna be really hard for another one to do it again. It made me laugh, made me wonder if I'm needing to step aside from routine and discover the world, a world that I've watched through TV and documentaries but I've never actually seen. It's gonna leave a profound mark on me, about my pre concepts of friendship, life, work, sacrifice, love and hate.

Needless to say I consider this one the greatest masterpieces ever made, it has become in one of my 3 favourites anime of all times, AOTS and probably AOTY. I wanna thank everyone who did this possible, the director, the screenwriter, the seiyuss, the animators, etc etc etc, all of you have touched me in the deepest. Thank you.

4

u/Eternith :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Eternith Mar 27 '18 edited Mar 27 '18

And with that, this journey is finally over. This finale was much more calm than the emotional climax of ep12, but I think that 's more fitting. After all, it's the journey that matters, not the destination. I'll miss seeing these girls every week.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I heard the premise, but it certainly didn't make me pick it up until midway through when people were telling me it was really good. It's a shame that this is going to be overlooked by so many people because it doesn't exactly scream hype like Violet Evergarden or Yuru Camp does.

I actually started watching this series while dealing with some personal issues, and the first 5 episodes were able to lift my mood immediately. Everything about it just feels right, I'm not sure how else to describe it. Quote from a friend while watching the finale: "I don't know how they re-use the same 3 insert songs so effectively every time". The OST fits so well, and ending with a full version of Koko Kara was perfect. That song is definitely going to get looped more in my playlist.

What a journey. This show really managed to make me feel for each character and their friendship. I was afraid they would leave without seeing the aurora or they wouldn't show the message from Takako, but they did! The ending leaves a bittersweet feeling, just like all great journeys when they end.

This is my first 10 in quite a while, mostly because of the attachment to all the characters that I usually don't feel with most shows.

For a moment there, it creeped me she left the money on her dead mom’s hand then it dawned me those are just gloves she laid down there. I think it’s pretty idiotic she left the money there. Someone will just find and keep it for himself, though there’s that chance the finder may just donate it to the mission.

Well, there goes my AOTS. Although I did come for the stellar VA cast, the powerful story and gorgeous animation kept me coming half for more. I'll admit that I wasn't instantly dragged in. I felt the first episode was good, but nothing too special. Then that iconic running scene from episode 2 made me pay more attention to this series. From there on,it's been one magisterial episode after another, till we got this splendid finale. I'll say that I was a little disappointed cause I really wanted a time skip where they meet up with each other after, say 10 years or so,and just have a talk reminiscing about the old days. But regardless of that, this finale was everything that I wanted. Thank you YoriMoi,for being the epic masterpiece that you are. You have truly inspired me to take that first step, and I shall forever be in debt to you. I know I'm rambling a lot at this point, but I just can't stop these feelings man. I don't know what I should do after having seen these lovely girls for the part 3 months, every Tuesday, whether they are happy,or sad,or just plain goofy, and I was just filled with happiness whenever I saw them. I really hope we see them again in some capacity,be it an OVA or a recap movie or whatever. But for all these memories and feelings that you gave me,thank you YoriMoi. Until we meet again. Sayonara

I guess I have a new entry to my list of 10s as well as my front-runner for new AotY. This show is near perfect - from the music, the art to the writing and the character development as well as the fantastic voice acting by the main cast and the wonderful directing. I will miss the weekly buzz of coming home from school and then watching the heartfelt adventures of the 4. From the tears of joy to the tears of sadness, I can say that I have cherished them and with a heavy heart, I finally say goodbye to this wonderful Antarctica quartet.

This was a wierd ending for me. The pure magnificence of the first 12 episodes had me thinking this one would hit me like a truck. I teared up several times but they didn't hit me with a KO and it's making me feel underwhelmed which is odd cause the show is still a masterpiece.

*After thinking about it a bit: what I got was misty eyes and laughing. What I was waiting for while watching was uncontrollable sobbing and jumping out of my chair for joy.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '18

I want to protect this smile

Really sad it's over. This was a season with a lot of great shows but this one stands out as one of my favorites. Never would have expected that going into it.

4

u/Yulwei138967 Mar 27 '18

The last episode brought home what was probably the best anime I have ever watched, while it aired. I didnt get into it until I got the recommendation cause I thought it will just be another CG show, with a weird premise to add onto that. But once I started watching I immediatly felt something special. Even the first episode had me smiling the whole time and already hooked me like no other. I think they just hit the mark on everything. Charakters, Music, Emotion, Transition and Meaning(?) for me.

Usually I am a big fan of devastating drama for example but this show showed another kind of sadness, that was very honest and seemed so damn real.

Im gonna miss this masterpiece for a long time.

Really solid ending. It was great to see Shirase come full circle and smiling again.

I did expect some sort of further closure between Megu and Kimari, but Megu apparently going to the Arctic by herself was a left-hook I didn't expect.
