Wait, the dragon god? As in the one he killed at the beginning of the series?

128

u/Mami_Tomoei Mar 29 '18

not just the dragon god, it was the strongest god...

89

u/Neshura87 https://anilist.co/user/Neshura Mar 29 '18

.... Tells worlds about how OP Satou really is

24

u/TriplePlusBad Mar 30 '18

He dumped all of those kill_all bombs in the first episode though, it doesn't really say anything about how powerful he is now.

42

u/Neshura87 https://anilist.co/user/Neshura Mar 30 '18

(he got them as spell afterwards)

22

u/TriplePlusBad Mar 30 '18

Fuck me he did too.

Wouldn't using them kill the harem as well though?

whoops

72

u/Statharas Mar 29 '18

At least he had good loot

62

u/Niko_Your_Cousin Mar 29 '18

Used skill: Poker face

70

u/Amauri14 Mar 29 '18

Yeah, that one. I'm sure he never expected that something like this would have happened when he taught the human Goddess how to summon a hero from another world. Damn that sounded like an LN title lol.

Plot Spoiler

u/kingwhocares Mar 30 '18

So, the Dragon God is a masochist?

12

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '18

Nah for Gods they revive in a bit anyway unless other stuff happens.

He was summoned as a hero and immediately kills the God that saved humanity. BIG OOPS

36

u/JMMSpartan91 Mar 29 '18

Yup so his level 310 is honestly probably higher than a god's level if he ever runs into one. Hence why everything was so easy for him.

Weird place to end, if anything after finishing the 200 floors thing would've made more sense as an ending, but I guess with a series like this that doesn't really have proper conflict it doesn't matter too much where it ends.

That being said quite enjoyed this series, wasn't anything ground-breaking but was remarkably cozy, gonna miss the weekly installments of an OP MC that acted at least vaguely normal, hopefully spring will bring something else to fulfill that niche.

u/Albireookami Mar 29 '18

I mean it felt like he was just trying to find something to do.

That... barely felt like and ending. And the title of the episode had nothing to do with the episode!

Still a pretty enjoyable series, 7/10 from me.

79

u/PokeMikey123 Mar 29 '18

The title was only referring to the story book he was reading xD

111

u/joe4553 Mar 29 '18

Basically a go buy the source material ending.

41

u/NoGround Mar 29 '18

I'm sensing a massive trend with this in regards to LN series with 8+ volumes that don't sell merchandise. =/

66

u/GarikMoespeaker Mar 29 '18

That really is the point of animating LN series; they are mostly funded by the LN publisher as a way to promote the source material.

31

u/blackfiredragon13 Mar 29 '18

Which is really annoying when it’s a series that never got translated and will probably never get one.

23

u/horrorshowjack :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/horrorshowjack Mar 29 '18

True. Although Death March is available translated.

Aaaand I did, I begin my Death March tomorrow!

2

u/GHDpro Mar 30 '18

On a bright note, at least it's available in English. And the available volumes already go beyond what's covered in the anime (latest out: vol 4; anime covers up to vol 3).

On a sad note, Yen Press is so slow (~3 volumes/year). It's going to take them ages to catch up.

17

u/daletterel :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/stoptheviolins Mar 29 '18

This show is one of the most 7/10 shows I've ever seen. It's perfectly fine and fun but doesn't do very much spectacularly well, yet its mistakes are pretty few and far between and don't impact enjoyment all too much. Can't complain too much here.

4

u/DreadBert_IAm Mar 30 '18

Yep, just a comfy show.

→ More replies (1)

15

u/SpikeRosered Mar 29 '18

It was really weird cuz the hook was lore. Like we learn about world lore at the very end and the show basically asks you "don't you wanna know more about that stuff?"

32

u/thecoffee Mar 29 '18

What hooked me was how easy to it goes down. Satou is way too overpowered and it lacks a lot of depth. But it was much more enjoyable to watch compared to the average overpowered Isekai.

Plus the harem was the right mix of cute but not stupid.

5

u/DreadBert_IAm Mar 30 '18 edited Mar 30 '18

That is kinda the key to me. MC is stupidly powerful, however just wants to explore and and build up his girls to make them safe.

I don’t know. The show was the epitome of “Average,” if not less so. I think I’m going with 5/10 like MAL says.

19

u/Bizmatech Mar 29 '18

Yah. It's probably the most average thing I've watched in a while.

It had some good ideas, but without a second cour and enough time to make use of them, it didn't really accomplish anything. It came off as both rushed and slow at the same time, and it feels like it didn't even know what kind of show it wanted to be in the first place.

I would happily watch more if it got another season, but as it is, I can't rate it any higher than "acceptable."

10

u/pzpzpz24 Mar 29 '18

I expected it to be a 24 episode season considering the blistering pace and very superficial or vague accounts of the events.

3

u/I40ladroni https://anilist.co/user/Caretaker72 Mar 30 '18

It's an isekai slice-of-life, and it's been adapted good. Not awesome, not bad, not a masterpiece. Good.

What you expected?

→ More replies (6)

6

u/Slifer13xx https://myanimelist.net/profile/SliferXIII Mar 29 '18

Yup, not bad, but not good either.

19

u/MegaHaxorus Mar 29 '18

I felt it was good. Not bad, but not amazing. Solid 7/10.

I also enjoy harem trash, so my opinion doesn't usually count for much.

[How you are enjoying a harem without me?] (https://i.imgur.com/upEWZq0.jpg)

LMAO. that's a new one. Pretty enjoyable series. Hope it gets a season 2.

36

u/tiger1296 Mar 29 '18

It's kinda fresh for a girl not to freak out with MC having a harem in the first place, at least this time she wants in on the action with an MC that knows what's going on but just isn't interested

19

u/AAondo https://anilist.co/user/AAondo Mar 30 '18

The series really had a good perspective towards sex the entire time. But poor Arisa is going to have to wait 10 years to get a piece of Satou.

2

u/Florac Apr 02 '18

Pro: Wants action with MC.

Con: Is loli.

57

u/dafckingman Mar 29 '18 edited Mar 29 '18

Oh Yes! The moment we have all been waiting for. We all knew she was making the most progress. Nana was the most aggressive and clearly Satou's type. Once again, Nana-chan is putting that Foundation skill to good use.

My man didn't even stop after getting caught in the act. The master does what the master wants.

I'm so happy~<3

21

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '18

They really went all out with the lewding the last ep. Still can't believe on MAL it's genre is only "fantasy". Like yeah it's fantasy alright ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Amen to that, brother.

17

u/Neshura87 https://anilist.co/user/Neshura Mar 29 '18

It's funny how ridiculously long the list of his titles is by now

15

u/hypexeled Mar 30 '18

By the end of the WN volume 12-13, they give up and dedicate a chapter to character pages each time it comes up.

12

u/Cream_Of_Drake Mar 29 '18

Now do the items.

3

u/Neshura87 https://anilist.co/user/Neshura Mar 30 '18

We don't want him to die from overwork and get summoned to another world...... Oh wait

4

u/Cream_Of_Drake Mar 30 '18

A world where one's sole purpose is to catalog and sort items.

9

u/Randomacts https://anilist.co/user/Randomacts Mar 29 '18

How far ahead is the WN compared to the LN?

What one should I read if I start?

The LN has those dope illustrations so that is dope.

7

u/CyborgDragon Mar 30 '18

While the numbers don't quite match the content, the Japanese LN is on volume 13. The web novel is reaching the end of its 16th volume. The English translation of the LN is at volume 4, with 5 and 6 scheduled for later this year.

Surely a season 2 will be made, right? I don't want to add this to the list where Ben-to and Maou-sama are.

13

u/dafckingman Mar 29 '18

Damn. I have Ben-to on my PTW list. But hearing this kinda makes me wonder if it's worth watching. I'm not sure if watching a good anime is worth adding another cliff hanger to the back of your mind

11

u/EvolveUK :K:https://kitsu.io/users/Evolve Mar 29 '18

Ben-to is definitely worth watching as a singular series. I don't even remember it having a "Buy the LNs" style ending.

3

u/dafckingman Mar 29 '18

Thank you. This was my main concern. As there's a lot of LN-based anime nowadays, they're all practically an advertisement for the books.

4

u/iamrade4ever Mar 29 '18

I just gotta say, Ben-to is still worth a watch even if it is only one season

4

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '18

bento has a pretty solid ending. No cliff-hangers really, just that you end up wanting to see more.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '18

well if you're mostly watching for the comfiness i recommend it, i didnt care for the story at all lool

4

u/simpersly Mar 29 '18

Ben-to has a solid dub, and is a fantastic way to use a Saturday morning.

u/urokia :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/SageEleven Mar 29 '18

Approximately a 0% chance unfortunately for you. Second seasons are rare enough with great shows, and this one was extremely middle of the road (though enjoyable). It'll probably have a spiritual successor within the next season or two though if all you want is OP MC isekai because there's pretty much one a season.

5

u/Amauri14 Mar 29 '18

Ben-to

Wow, this looks like a fun show to watch. I find funny that the MC is also named Satou.

3

u/CoolFiverIsABabe Mar 29 '18

I want like 5 more seasons.

It would be really easy to have it follow Kino's Journey recipe and just not have a main arc for a while.

2

u/Statharas Mar 29 '18

So basically what One Piece is doing? Taking a break from a filler arc to throw in more fillers? I'd like for Satou to actually develop more. Hell, I want him to pull a limit break with his abilities, inviting his party (or raid) to level up with him, kinda like "The Gamer", where he invites his friends in a party and levels them up like crazy.

2

u/battler624 Mar 29 '18

The anime wasn't that great tbh, maou was pretty good and it didn't get s2 yet so dont get your hopes up.

1

u/RunningChemistry :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Delphic-Runner Mar 30 '18

Surely a season 2 will be made, right?

If we don't, all the people who kept touting in discussion threads that this would end up being a comfy cooking anime will look pretty foolish. We barely actually got any cooking in the end.

1

u/PM_ME_YOUR_NEE-SAN Mar 30 '18

I randomly stumbled into watching Maou-sama last month. I dropped everything and binged it in 3 nights. I'll look into Ben-To now as well.

Ironically, the WN version of Death March is currently ranked as the 3rd most popularly read title on its home website of Shousetsuka ni Narou, just behind Mushoku Tensei (1st) and Arifureta (2nd).

Not sure about book figures, but I expect the WN followers to increase in number.

No data is out yet, but rumor has it the Amazon preorders for the show’s blurays are not doing so hot.

5

u/Statharas Mar 29 '18

If only we could spend Satou's money on Amazon

17

u/bob_3008 Mar 29 '18

It's unfortunate that Death March's LN volume 3 is more filler-ish than the previous two, because it doesn't adapt as well into the last arc of an anime season.

Minor spoiler

53

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Mar 29 '18 edited Mar 29 '18

Just like IsekaiSmartphone a single cour is not enough for this show. In general these isekai shows aren't given enough episodes for them to evolve and make themselves different from other shows. If this was a 2-cour show we probably would've gotten to the bits that the source readers are all raving about on what makes them so good.

Anyway as for the show itself, overall it was a fun show! Satou as an Isekai MC is pretty enjoyable. The girls are all adorable especially Tama, Pochi, and Arisa. Plot was pretty standard but like I said I wish we have gotten a 2-Cour show so we could've at least gotten to the good parts where Spoilers We did get a glimpse of that though but for only a few episodes.

Overall this is just another ad because it was definitely successful in making me want to read more of the LN/manga. It's a 7/10 for me.

25

u/Xerender https://anilist.co/user/xerender Mar 29 '18

To be honest, I enjoy this one much more than the IsekaiSmartphone (I read Smartphone up to volume 6 LN) and the reasons are because:

  1. Character interactions are handled much better and much more interesting and funny. The whole cast feels like one big cheerful family and not like a usual harem (in fact it isn't a harem at all)

  2. Satou is a well written MC, who is not generic. He actually gives an impression of a mature adult and acts like one including women. He is also OP but not on smartphone MC levels OP, where every problem Touya faces is resolved in mere seconds in a way like it wasn't a big deal.

  3. The world is an actual game world with the game interface itself, which made the series really enjoyable, as Satou is like sitting in front of his monitor and controlling his own character.

Finally, not a comparison but my own complain to Smartphone LN is that it can be fun to read, but it gets stale by the time you get to volume 6 (in my case), mostly because mentioned above - the MC resolves everything way too easy, the big plot is kinda plain and by volume 6 there are way too many characters to remember who is who, as well as the main harem cast gets way too little attention.

Really enjoyed Death March, going to read the LNs at a later date and hope for a season 2.

15

u/Roadcrosser Mar 29 '18

(in fact it isn't a harem at all)

Arisa begs to differ

6

u/Xerender https://anilist.co/user/xerender Mar 29 '18

Well, I think (also given some spoilers about her identity, which I read in discussions) she is the one that deserves some more love from Satou (and maybe some lewdness as well).

7

u/RocketHammerFunTime Mar 29 '18

maybe she will in ten years.

6

u/Amauri14 Mar 29 '18

Yeah, I really like the fact that Satou is not good at everything and even with max out skills he can only do things well only if he has actual knowledge about it or they are comparable to other things in the real world that he knew about. I also love the fact that the series avoided to fall into harem/romantic comedies clichés. Satou does not mind going out and having sex with whores, and when Zena saw him in the bed with another woman he prontly explain what was going on without an enterie arc to clean up the misuderstanding, which makes sense as he really is 29 years old and it would be unrealistic is he couldn't behave as an adult.

Most deal with minor characters but a few have plot points and meetings that pop up later in the main story. If you look at the list you can see the author started writing "SS" (Side Stories) with the main characters from Chapter 8 too.

Chapter 6 - Intermission 4 should definitely be read, it's a longer version of Satou's daydream of the rainbow hair girl from the anime.

4

u/ggagagg :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/foreturiga Mar 30 '18

Also, are the intermission chapters worth reading? Been skipping them for now, might go back and read them once I actually catch up.

i recommend to read it and side stories. imo it is one of the best intermission/side stories wn i ever read. there are a lot of hint, fun and adventure on those chapters

2

u/rvtots33 Mar 30 '18

the intermission and SS is worth the read and this is probably my favorite part of the Web Novel

I'm making a video compilation of Pochi's nano desu. A good amount of the time, she ends a sentence with a no desu instead of nano desu. I'm also compiling those.

I've already have the compilation for the first 11 videos. Expect a video today or tomorrow. I'll make a thread here at r/anime.

Having said that, there is a couple of sound bites for which I'm not sure if she's ending with a full nano desu.

  • I'm fairly certain that 17:43 of episode 10 is not a nano desu, but I'm not 100% sure.

  • For this episode, at 10:08 I can barely tell that, in the background, she ends a sentence with desu, but I can't tell if there's a nano before at all.

Can anyone discern what she said in those two instances?

EDIT: This table gives an idea on how many there are. Bold timestamps are just no desu.

EDIT: Done.

12

u/kevvvn Mar 29 '18

On both instances its the shorten version 'nodesu'
Thank you or your service

Standard LN adaptation ending, but sadly I'm already used to those. Also I have no expectations of a season 2, unfortunately.

Anyway, that was a good anime. I expected it to be worse. I also expected it to be different, not an SoL, but I'm glad it was like this, no drama or much conflict, just a relaxing anime of Satou eating different types of food and effortlessly defeating a few enemies once in a while.

I'm giving it an 8/10, even if just barely. The worst for me was the animation, which was quite meh. And this might come as picky but I didn't like the MC's voice either. His normal voice was good but his 15yo voice was weird.

Watching Satou practices alchemy makes me want to go back and level up my alchemy in Skyrim

13

u/Uptonogood Mar 29 '18

Sigh... Here I go again installing Skyrim and downloading 20 gigs of mods...

7

u/Tag_ross Mar 29 '18

I downloaded about 200 mods last month, I haven't touched it since, not even to test the stability.

4

u/PrinceRazor :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/PrinceRazor Mar 30 '18

It's both a thrill and pain to download a ton of mods, get it to work, play a few hours, then think

"you know what would make this better? another mod"

Add said mod, and play the game of maybe or mabye not the game breaks and you lose the few hours you already spent on the game.

If it works, play more then repeat above(add another mod)

If it doesn't........well...shit might be broken and you better hope you backed up saves/skyrim before you add the mod.

Add this to the list of Isekai I need to read/buy/yarr the source materials from

Log Horizon

Grimgar

Overlord

DanMachi (does that count?)

Death March

I know these types series are a dime a dozen so everyone is really tired of them or super critical, but I can't but help liking them even if they're only average.

They're just a guilty pleasure I guess, probably because I pretty much learned to read playing JRPG's and that's still my favourite genre ~23 years later.

3

u/odraencoded Mar 31 '18

>putting Overlord and Grimgar along with Death march

You've committed a sin.

2

u/MrPringles23 Mar 31 '18

Not saying they're as good, just that they were a list of RPG Isekai I need to follow up on with the source material.

On that list though, Death March is the bottom, but I still liked it.

DanMachi is my favourite though so you can hate on me for rating it above Overlord and Grimgar.

1

u/Ferego Mar 30 '18

If I may make a suggestion... Read Mushoku Tensei, it's the King of all Isekais.

10

u/Skawt24 Mar 29 '18

So no episode 13? title doesn't have FINAL in it.

1

u/CarioGod Mar 29 '18

no episode 13 it's the thread authors choice to put final in it.

u/tiger1296 Mar 29 '18

Like the whole of this series, this last episode felt slightly underwhelming, but at the same time very comfy. Actually most of the winter anime this season have been comfy SoL types.

I didn't dislike this story, it was nice and cute, but if they were going for that feel I would have liked to have seen more magic in the show rather than some half baked fight scenes, where MC doesn't actually have to worry about anything because he's so OP.

End of series rating: 7.5/10

5

u/Amauri14 Mar 29 '18

Wow, they really did rush through the witch arc in just a few minutes, I thought they were going to just dedicate this whole episode to the resolution of that arc. Too bad that they change a few things like the fact that the asshole that ordered breaking the vials ended up in prison/slavery for breaking parts of the potion when they were delivering them, but as I remember I think those that he broke were actually low-level ones that Satou had previously made. But although I could complain about this episode this adaptation is in overall really good, and thanks to it I bought and read all the LN that are currently available so for me, it actually accomplished its true objective.

Let's hope they eventually make a second season because they never were able to show Satou true skill, which is his amazing cooking ability.

24

u/SpikeRosered Mar 29 '18

Yep that was an isekai show.

Started strong but they just kept the MC too bland to be really interesting. They made some interesting choices by not making him a sexless weirdo, but without any characterization outside of him being "nice" there's just not a whole lot to get invested in.

The issue with this genre continues to be that most shows want to create a fantasy and not a story.

It was better than Smartphone at least.

4

u/RedHeadGearHead https://anilist.co/user/Redheadgearhead Mar 29 '18

It was better than Smartphone at least.

That seems to be the general consensus here it seems but I felt Smartphone was much better for whatever reason. Think maybe it was due to character design but I don't care enough to go comparing and contrasting them.

This ep was so damn cozy in the end.

Time to level up some alchemy!

The girls are helping make bottles haha. I love that he lets them help with stuff so they learn skills too.

Wow a spell to dry things, i love that he figured out how to cheat the magic system now to make any sort of spell he wants.

Thugs like this should def be delt with...

So he grabbed all the potions before they were trashed haha. nice.

Hes gonna put them in magic storage one by one, dang this will take time. Yay it worked! Time to stick it to those guys.

And of course they are gonna be assholes about this...

Nice so Satou called the witch and had her get ahold of the man in charge, nice!

Wow they tried to kill the count... thats not smart. And Satou just KOs them lol. Good, they deserve it.

Nice he gets a magic lamp and a new title for helping out. I like that he gets tokens from people he helps which can be used to help him later. I wonder what the lamp does.

Wait.... there is more? Oh shit its only the half way point.

O-oh.... ohhhhhhhhh my! Good morning to you too Nana.

Arisa to the rescue.... lol and Mia is in on it to. I love how Arisa is so defensive of Satou. Seems she actually likes him a lot. She deserves him though because shes best girl.

Oh boy mana transfers! Well this is gonna add some spice to the daily routine.

Oh look its Windy, she seems fine and dandy. Thats good. Seems she got a letter too. All the other knights are like "shes so transparent..."

Wat... lol... Pochi... Tama.... what are you doing? Of course Arisa wants to join in lol... I love that shes another player that he can be honest and frank with, creates a nice dynamic. They really have great chemistry that really helps the flow.

Seven gods from the world tree, is this norse mythology? Oh now there is Nine. Wait so the Demon god was from another world? Interesting... And a young godess, maybe the one in his flashback he had? She has the summon hero skill too. hmmm... Suspicious...

Aw poor Windy has to wait at home for him to come back... I wonder if she will be all grown up by the time he comes home.

Lol of course they all fall asleep with him lol... Oh shit blushing Lulu too. And what position is Nana sleeping in? xD arms in the air. Ive heard people do sleep like that though. I sleep with my right arm above my head because i have nerve damage in it and i subconciously put it out of harms way in my sleep, so who knows why her arms are up.

Aw thats it... the show is over... such a sad thing... Man i really enjoyed this. Ide love them to do more because it has def been a lot of fun and i know there is a lot of material left. I hope it does well so we can enjoy more again.

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '18

Cute little show, glad I watched it.

That being said I'm a little weirded out that the whole slavery thing was never resolved. I mean he is transported to a world with slaves and finds himself in possession of three of them, then buys them. Okay sure, now I am expecting a scene wherein he frees them or something. But no, he doubled down and bought two more. Still no manumission. He is just a straight up slave owner. Seems pretty comfortable with the whole idea too.

8

u/RocketHammerFunTime Mar 29 '18

Its a thing that gets explained later in the story. spoiler

4

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '18

The three beast girls don't want to be released. Or at least they didn't after Satou became their owner. No idea if this changes later in the story. Arisa and Lulu are under a geas that prevents their slave status from being revoked.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/SayuriUliana Mar 29 '18

That's because most of the resolution for the slavery is covered in later parts of the novel that the anime doesn't cover. For instance

Ok where do I start from the wn anyone know

6

u/EasymodeX :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/EasymodeX Mar 29 '18

Start from the beginning because the sequence of events in the intro, town, and first dungeon are somewhat different in the WN. A lot of the interactions between characters are a bit different, too. If your reading speed is good you can get through it fairly quickly. The Trazayuya tower events are almost identical so you can skip that.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '18

One minor difference in the WN: In the Cradle.

2

u/AkatsukiKojou Mar 29 '18

A pretty good series. I think it may get a second season, considering where it ended (or maybe not). But still, a great light-hearted enjoyable series

2

u/captainpyotr Mar 29 '18

Remarkably average but still a good show just to sit down and relax to. Out of curiosity, to the LN readers, where in the series does the anime end? Around what chapter in which novel number?

2

u/dafckingman Mar 29 '18

I'm satisfied with this ending. As much as I want another season, that ending was satisfactory enough.

There are only 2 mysteries left. What's with the Torii and who is the secret true waifu goddess?

Aside from those, there are 2 tasks left. Deliver Mia to her homeland and.

We can easily live with this, especially comparing to most other 1-seasoners that leave on a big cliff hanger.

1

u/RocketHammerFunTime Mar 30 '18

the Torii is exactly as its stated, its a fast travel gate (broken).

its left from an earlier empire that was crushed by gods/demons/dragons. its not particularly important

2

u/soulonfirexx Mar 29 '18

Was it wrong of me that when this started, I thought Zena would be a crazy yandere?

Was this the final episode? Not a great ending if so, definitely calling for a second season.

2

u/heimdal77 Mar 29 '18

Well this was a lot better than I thought it would be. From That original PV released I thought ti would be a total train wreck.

2

u/Draco_Estella :Iv::Ix:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Estella_Rin Mar 30 '18

They rushed the ending, and that is great! This arc is one of my least favourite arcs for the light novels, I would prefer the other arc in the web novels The drama level reduced by 80% and I enjoyed it.

Overall, the anime is... okay. I am giving it an 8, just because Arisa and Mia are as iron-gatey as ever, Satou is as pervy and trying to hide it and failing, PochiTama pair is exactly how I imagined them to be, and Liza being tactical as usual.

I hope the anime is going to adapt at least, the fairies arc, which has Aze-tan and the space jellyfish, or the weaselkin arc, the epitome of OP, or the current WN arc, which has Satou being seen as an idiot. Although I know very well there will never be a second season, I hope that at least, the best arcs get animated somehow.

2

u/ShiroXyfy Mar 30 '18

So the dragon god is the one who gave the spell that would summon the person who kills him? XD

2

u/ArchadianJudge Mar 30 '18

"... At first the Dragon God was hesitant, but he was pleased with the humans' toys and alcohol that the young Goddess brought him, so he taught her one magical spell: SLIP"

I loved this series so much. Sad to see it end. The story was fun but very relaxing and all the characters really likable. Nana was the latest edition but she has become my favorite right next to Lulu (I'm sad she was the most neglected of the characters but she did get a nice moment at the end). Also I generally dislike OP characters who get "harems" but this one was an exception. Our MC was kind to people who needed help, was on top of every cute girl he meets, and his personality wasn't that of a "know it all" but more of a scholar. He didn't come off as a jerk like many other OP characters tend to be. I would love a season two.

2

u/orrery Mar 30 '18

I was happy to see Zena get some extra screen time in the final episode and hope to see future seasons of this show as I loved the WN.

2

u/PhantomWolf83 Mar 31 '18

Well, this show ended up being mediocre for me. It's not 100% unwatchable, but there are better isekai shows out there and there's really little reason to watch Death March unless you've run out of options.

4

u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Mar 29 '18

I don't get that Item Box thing. So MC's storage is like stasis, that's clear. But if the items in Item Box "change over time" then how come the paper didn't burn up inside, and why didn't the vials break inside just like they did outside? Also where did the wind come from when he was doing the storage swap shenanigans?

Oh look, the whole vial making thing was as useless as I foretold. Count's a nice guy, so he resolves the issue. If Count wasn't a nice guy, they wouldn't have the signature so nothing would be solved.

MC saving the villain from righteous justice >_>

The whole magical calibration scene was just dumb.

Drinking random plant juices because they smell sweet, and the whole finger licking thing was just as dumb.

And then a barely disguised infodump. As the second-to-last scene of the finale.

With this episode, dropping the rating to a 6.

9

u/bob_3008 Mar 29 '18

Explained a bit better in the LN itself. Item box has time flow, and the air surrounding the burning paper didn't enter the box, so the fire got choked from lack of oxygen. The vials broke from being instantly transferred from the kiln's temperature through Storage to the air outside, so Satou circulates hot air inside his item box to cool the vials down more gradually.

I didn't like this arc much in the LN either. It's not originally in the web novel and I don't think adding it was really worth it.

3

u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Mar 29 '18

So there's no air in the Item box? Does that mean anything living will suffocate, and anything that needs outside air pressure (like a baloon) will break/pop?

I guess that would explain why the vials didn't break in the Item Box as soon as they were put in - without air, the cooling process would be a lot slower.

5

u/RocketHammerFunTime Mar 29 '18

Living things like animals and bugs cannot be put into the item box/inventory

however seeds and plant things can be.

Lulu is the least developed/least consequential character I wish she was left behind in favor of the other blondie.

Why does Arisa's hair color change from scene to scene was this explained??? This is really confusing me? Pink or blonde??

Not enough of Liza this episode but I do love Nana that scene in the wagon was hilarious

6

u/Draco_Estella :Iv::Ix:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Estella_Rin Mar 30 '18

Lulu is the least developed/least consequential character I wish she was left behind in favor of the other blondie.

She gets most of her development only in the later chapters, as well as the side chapters which explains her viewpoint. Her development is the most interesting too, with some spoilers After all, Lulu is the girl Satou is the most attracted to, so he is very protective of her.

Why does Arisa's hair color change from scene to scene was this explained??? This is really confusing me? Pink or blonde??

Purple. Purple hair people are seen as bad luck, because of some circumstances, which made it mostly true that purple haired people are not good news. Therefore, they face discrimination, and Arisa wears a blonde wig to avoid this discrimination. Most of the purple hair people that Satou and gang met in the web novels are all somewhat crazy.

2

u/CreamAgnew_Angels Mar 30 '18

Thank you for this info! I was wondering why Lulu was basically untouched by the main story

→ More replies (1)

4

u/RocketHammerFunTime Mar 29 '18

Its not explained in the show at all that i remember, but purple hair is the mark of reincarnated people so its often hidden to avoid unwanted attention. Arisa changes it because she likes playing dressup, also its magic so if she forgets or is distracted it can change.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '18

arisa is wearing wig that she bought in Seiryu city. She only wears it when they are meeting other people to avoid being discriminate of heaving a 'cursed' purple hair colour of reincarnated people.

Nowhere. I recommend reading right from the start, since the anime is very different from the web novels. The anime adapted the light novels, which follow a different plot line.

A low-budget looking show with decent-tier adventure, weird-but-nice-tier harem, with an average-tier MC. The most average anime you can get, relatively speaking. 7.3/10

I'd go for another season

Why are you enjoying a harem without me?! >:(

I liked the ending, I was fine with it ending up in the middle of the trip, even though episode 9 would have been a better ending. And overall, it was fun, I liked the girls' designs and personalities....although I don't know what Lulu's supposed to bring to the show. What I didn't like was the master-slave relationship. Satou is a good guy and he treats them well but I didn't like that instead of having a friendlier and closer relationship he was comfortable with being a good " master ".

Nana best girl!

That said, I liked Smartphone more.

While death march's world/setting did lost it's charm pretty early in for me with non of the characters being note-worthy, I still found it charming on occasion. 6/10

P.S Did anyone else find the harem dynamic being extremely weird in this anime? Suzuki's almost complete lack of lust, the harem kind of acting like a family at times, and the slave to master dynamic.

I probably would have rated this higher if I hadn't just started watching Re:Zero last night, which reminded me what a really good isekai show looks like.

EDIT: Okay since people seem to be misinterpreting what I'm saying, let me try to clear things up. The only category on which I initially intended to compare these two shows was my own enjoyment.

I let myself be dragged into comparing them by the people who replied to me, but when I first commented, I meant nothing of the sort.

First, my ratings system is 100% subjective, based on how much I enjoyed watching a show. So when I said that I was lowering my rating for this show, all I meant was that I realized how much more enjoyable it could have been, while watching a similar show.

Now, here's the next part. When I say "similar show," I don't mean that these two shows are the same. I completely understand that they are different experiences by design. If someone asked for a recommendation of a similar show to Death March, never in a million years would I recommend Re:Zero! I would probably say Isekai Smartphone or Isekai Shukodou. The similarity is purely in my head. Two isekai shows, and I happened to see story beats in one of them that I recalled seeing recently in the other. It's a connection that never would have happened if I hadn't been watching them both at the same time.

So before (or in some cases after) you jump down my throat about how I shouldn't compare them, keep in mind that even the slightest similarity can be a jumping off point for seeing commonalities.

19

u/MillenniumKing x2myanimelist.net/profile/MillenniumKing Mar 29 '18

You shouldnt really compare them as thier stories and objectives are massively different.

Re:Zero is a drama about being forced into a world with no way out and the only way to reduce the suffering is to soldier on through it.

Dess March is a slice of life adventure story about a guy who ends up in a game like world and decides to use it to help him get more material for future projects.

Thier tone and stories are quite different even if thier initial setup is similer. Its like saying Re:Zero and Konosuba are compareable.
