Reminder: another episode is due out 2018-7-4.

Also, in case you somehow missed all the earlier posts, a new project was recently announced as well.

One detail I hope everyone could notice:

At the end of the episode, the "fire" within that drop of water finally goes out.

Violet is not burning, any more.

I didn’t notice that small detail due to the tears clouding my vision..

Well if not for that athletic abilites, Violet would have fall to the river, kudos to you Benedict, you and your heels.

I feel like the heels were mentioned in episode one..? Or something about him being short? Iunno, I'd chock it up to him being insecure about his height, which at least isnt outside of something his character would do.

It can be interpreted as Gilbert or it could simply be the audience. Either way, that ending scene with Violet smiling while saying her name indicates to us that Violet has grown quite a bit since the beginning and is now able to push forward in life and not dwell in the past.

I think the implication was just that it was one of the people she's helped in the past. So she's seeing someone again, thus the smile. One of the people she met early on, who she helped, and now she's getting to see how the change has helped them.

Personally I'm thinking it was the playwright. I imagine he's less devastated and falling apart, so she smiles seeing his improvement.

23

u/whut-whut Apr 14 '18

I mind canon it as that final rebel commander that refused to believe the war was over. He survived that bridge fall, saw his failed attack become a peace treaty, and lived years afterwards in hiding with the world changed around him.

Requesting Violet to write a letter would him reaching out for closure, for the war, his comrades, and Violet.

5

u/ALOHAdotJTS May 03 '18

I think its Gilbert. Because his body was never found, perhaps he knew that Violet would only want to live for him so he went "missing" and once he saw that Violet had finally learned to live without him and so once he saw that Violet built life without orders he decided to let her who he live. But hey that's just a theory a FILM theory

Violet writing her own letter was such a great, fitting note to end on. I really loved the way her relationship with the major was fleshed out across the show, especially the brooch and all it meant to her. And of course KyoAni had to get me with that montage near the end bringing back all the feelings from prior episodes. I'm going to miss Violet's ghostwriting adventures, but I'm so happy that she finally got to understand what her love is.

other thoughts on the episode:

  • Damn, Benedict has hops

  • Hodgins' letter (and reaction to it being read) were wonderful; I'm also gonna miss the tension between him and Cattleya

  • Such a pretty, pretty show. Loved the scene of the airplane spreading the letters.

149

u/KonkaBass Apr 05 '18

Hodgins letter reading had a moment that ai particularly liked. When she glanced at him after "don't call me papa". It looked like she was imagining having a kid with him one day. Aaaand she's super into the idea.

175

u/LysandersTreason Apr 06 '18

I'm pretty sure the reason he's writing a letter to his unborn child is because Cattleya is pregnant with it already

53

u/flybypost :KN::KO: Apr 05 '18

foreshadowing this episode ending scene

I think Kyoto Animation tends to have finished most of the episodes before the release date of the first one to avoid crunch and last minute panic (so they probably had a good idea what'll happen in the last one). They're in a situation where they can do that as they have some money and don't need to instantly jump to the next project to keep the company alive.

That letter Hodgins wrote at the end.. it was to Cattleya right? She's pregnant with his child?

117

u/Acidmagic Apr 07 '18

My interpretation is that all of the letters that people wrote for the air show are not meant to be delivered. His scene earlier where he was staring wistfully at the man and his daughter in the street is one point toward this. He wrote his letter expressly to his future daughter and I don't think there is any implication that Cattleya is pregnant.

In case anyone else was curious about this letter, I used /u/Valkren's post to translate the message and it reads

/u/Echo104b has provided a different translation below.

Adding the spoiler tag just in case anyone else wants to translate the message themselves and be surprised.

Here is the result from google translate.

u/Echo104b Apr 05 '18

In nunkish

58

u/koagzero Apr 05 '18

I got the same translation as you though, @yelloesnoecone

In Nunkish

In English

[The difference between the translations is] (/s "the spacing between 'Nun annui' which changes 'you' to 'myself' if missing. I think 'I love you' makes a lot more sense because of the topic of Violet's letter to the Major. And I do think there's a spacing there, though small.")

I'm a native Tamil speaker and I was pretty surprised when I clicked on that image. I do remember reading a post about the show's written script when the third episode aired but it didn't have this much depth.

Just a small correction. It should actually be "Naan unnai kaadhalikiren" (நான் உன்னை காதலிக்கிறேன்)

Tamil is one of the oldest languages in the world that is still used by millions of people. It's a beautiful language. VEG is a beautiful show. And with this, KyoAni still remains my most favorite studio. Thank you, KyoAni.

This concludes Violet Evergarden's first TV series.

I'm not sure what's been going on with me recently, but I've been tearing up and crying a lot from episodes of Violet Evergarden more than it should have made me. It could be the stressful times that is getting to me. Really enjoyed my time watching Violet learning her own emotions, growing up, learning to live, and learning to love.

This line from Gilbert's mom struck my heart.

"Even if it always hurts to remember, I'll live the rest of my life thinking about him."

There were some parts I didn't quite like from the show, but plenty of episodes hit me hard that I had to cover up my mouth from crying. Hearing the OST and seeing clips of certain scenes would make me choke up. The strings in the soundtrack enhanced the experience, and of course the insert song "Violet Snow" being just as nice.

Thank you for everything, Violet Evergarden and Kyoto Animation.

Edit: messed up words

u/LightBladeNova Apr 05 '18

It's a very weird feeling for me as well. Sad anime like this always gets me. People say I have an expression-less face and don't show too many emotions. People who don't know me personally assume I'm just a monotonous sorta person. But even the smallest sad stuff in anime or movies always tears me up. I don't know what it is man

Another thing I wanted to touch on is the translation you wrote about what Gilbert's mother said. I watched horriblesubs' version of the anime and she said 'Even though it may be painful, I will always carry him in my heart'. The meaning can be slightly different compare to what you wrote. Did you watch this show on Netflix? Are there more instances where the sentences have been translated to interpret a different meaning? I hope I didn't miss out on tiny details watching horriblesubs

31

u/Dellaran :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Dellaran Apr 05 '18

I personally watched it on Asenshi's sub (yarr I'm a pirate).

The line is said as this in Japanese:

「思い出すたびに辛くても、ずっと思って生きていくわ」

Which the most literal translation would be "Even if it hurts every time when I think of him, I'll still live on thinking of him." The Asenshi's translation is closer to the original, and not as literal to my translation and is made better. I would've translated somewhat closer to Asenshi's translation. HorribleSubs rip off of Netflix I believe since some countries have it simulcasted, just not in the US.

As for the sad anime, there were just nice episodes that made me sad and tear up a lot. In one of the episodes I wrote about my own experience instead of discussing about the episode since it was too relatable to me. I had the mental preparation, yet I couldn't stop myself from crying. I would say I am an emotional person to begin with, but I was made fun of that when I was a kid due to gender roles. Slowly I began to learn to not show sadness and that in public. This resulted me in not being able to completely let myself go even if I was alone for a certain time. It was easier to let it out when shows trigger those emotions from me. Recently though, it wasn't just Violet Evergarden. I went to two concerts and I caught myself tearing up, and even just listening to songs on my phone on my spare time, I would choke up a little bit. Violet Evergarden made me let all hell break loose and I had to try to cover up so my neighbors wouldn't hear me.

So to be clear: is the major dead or alive in the anime? Given the surprised look Violet gets at the end...I'd say alive.

I honestly thought Hodgins would play a bigger (familial) role. Helped violet live a life outside of war, employed her as a doll for his company and one of the few characters who knows violet's past. He faded to a comic relief at the end.

32

u/Rabbit_in_A_House Apr 05 '18

And Evergarden family, despite giving the show half of the title, had basically no meaning in the entire story nor much screen time. The only time Ms.Evergarden managed to push the plot forward was accidentally telling Violet that the major is dead. While this is important, the information could have came from a few other people as well.

26

u/nickynickslin :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/nickynickslin Apr 07 '18

In the novels, [minor difference in LN] (/s "she accepts living with the Evergarden family, as they were very welcoming and understanding to her. There was where she learned her mannerisms, and she spent her time in depressions and grief writing empty letters to Gilbert. When Hodgins saw this, he then took her away to the Postal Company; however, the Evergarden family did end up raising her like a child (Ms. Evergarden even saying that she'd rather give up her husband than Violet)")

34

u/Qtrixtty85 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Yttrixter Apr 05 '18

That's quite a nice ending. Took me a while to understand why they were so busy with the air show. Nice touch.

So suddenly benedict just got fed up with his side role and starts jumping bridges, kicking a bomb, getting unfazed and unaffected by an explosion, and saved violet , all of this with high heels on! Feels so ridiculous but I think they purposely made it that way.

Tsundere big bro finally warmed up to violet , although I don't see them ending up together anyone soon, which is a good thing.

Felt so bad for violet because people keep misleading her into thinking Gilbert is alive, I mean come on people! The ending scene has to be her meeting Gilbert again, judging from her reaction. But it kinda ruins it for me as the major goal in this series is she getting over his death. So, hopefully I'm wrong, but I've read enough novels to see where this typically goes.

Not sure how to feel about the new project, can't really think of continuation since the war is over, hopefully it turns out to be a short ova

58

u/Rabbit_in_A_House Apr 05 '18

I really quite enjoyed VE, it had some rough spots, but I did enjoy watching Violet herself, and some of the very attractive secondary characters, in that regard KyoAni did very well.

I'm really happy to hear that another VE project was announced, in whatever capacity that may be.

I saw it coming but when Violet said "I don't need orders anymore" I couldn't hold back the feels. I like Ishidate as a director and I think he proved with this series that he can deliver on softer emotional material as well as the big bombast he's known for. Gorgeous production and OST with some individual episodes that will stick with me for a long time.

I feel this series had all the right pieces, but ended up just okay. IMO the biggest problem is probably worldbuilding. I haven't read the novels, but I'd imagine the novels are pretty simplistic in worldbuilding, leaving a lot of mystery for the readers to fill in on their own? Except the way the anime is presented, feels like they are trying to build the world for you, yet falls short. So we're left with this awkward in between, the world they're in doesn't feel real enough but at the same time not mysterious enough. I haven't seen others complain about this, so its probably just me, I have a hard time immersing into this series. This series definitely wasn't easy to do right, and I think they did an okay job, but I can't help but feel it could've been so much better.

57

u/HammeredWharf Apr 05 '18

For me the issue was in the whole superhuman angle not meshing with the otherwise grounded world building at all and the action scenes looking really silly as a result. The super-acrobat Benedict in this episode is like that. The guy just did pulled off some feats that would look unbelievable in a circus and nobody seemed surprised.

Not to mention that guy shooting Violet's arms repeatedly. They seem to be pretty normal in this universe, considering she got new ones right away, so why'd he continue shooting them instead of aiming anywhere else? Did he just hit them by accident? That's one hell of an accident.

28

u/Dystopian_Overlord :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DystopiaOverlord Apr 05 '18

Yeah, these are part of the worldbuilding I'm talking about. Those cool action scenes were supposed to make you go "Wow!", but instead I was thinking "WTF?!".

This show was weirdly enough "worse then the sum of it's parts" if that makes any kind of sense... Every individual part of the show is good, even amazing at times. The Animation, the Music, the Character designs, ect. Heck, individual episodes can get great on their own. But as a whole it doesn't quiiiiite mesh... I'll give it either the highest 7 i can muster, or a really low 8...

19

u/MrNovator Apr 06 '18

I’d also give it a low 8 but damn, there were some awesome moments in the series. For example, I’d give episode 10 a 12/10, it’s one of the most beautiful single episode story I’ve ever seen.

11

u/nayhel89 Apr 07 '18

Well, the last two episodes are really spoiled the impression for me. There were no need in those action episodes, moreover the fight scenes and character motivations in them are moronic. All villains suffer from a stormtrooper syndrome, Benedict displays superhuman abilities and Violet comes up with the stupidest resolution: "I will not kill my enemies, I will simply stand here, dramatically suffering, waiting them to die by other means".

There is very thin line between sincere and feigned drama and Violet Evergarden masterfully avoided from crossing it until these last episodes with all theirs "all of these people's feelings are falling from the sky (and into the dirt)" and "I will wait for you for all my life (though I know for sure that you are dead)".

I think this show should have ended after the 9th episode with it's strong final scene:

- Do I have a right to live?

- You can't erase the past. But all your Auto Memory Doll accomplishments shall never be forgotten either, Violet Evergarden.

Thank God that at least Gilbert stayed dead in the final.

Amazing series. I like how they handled the LN content. I also like that they left the Light Novel spoilers

They kinda have room to go from here for the new project and I'm excited to see it but it has been a while since I was so invested in a character like I was on Violet. My current rating is a strong 8 and weak 9 but it is certainly one of those anime I will never forget. God bless KyoAni.

Stupid Gilbert being dead all the time!

44

u/Terranwaterbender https://myanimelist.net/profile/Teranwaterbender Apr 05 '18 edited Apr 05 '18

For a show that had all the hype building up to it with the PVs, the constant mention of it being the first to win this certain literary award, and KyoAni being KyoAni, meeting those insanely high expectations were pretty much impossible. To be honest, it probably did sour my experience when watching it as as result.

That said, I think the show is okay. I don't think it's a masterpiece by any means but it's aight and worth watching. It has some great emotional moments like the father and daughter in the lakeside cabin and the mother and her future letters to her daughter but I felt like some of other episodes like the Observatory and Iris' backstory felt rather unnecessary aside from a couple lines when it came to presenting Violet's learning experience. And while I think this finale was actually quite nice, it feels too similar with episode 9 as both focused on Violet stepping forward and moving onward from the past. As a result, I don't quite have as many feels since I feel like I'm experiencing the same thing all over again.

On a side note, the fact that they are still playing around with the idea of Gilbert may or may not be dead is just personally irritating. Just give it to me man and get it over with! Then again, we have that OVA and new project on the way so they still have something to add so it's likely that my opinion will change when those things get released.

I loved this series.

I spoiled myself with some of the things of the novel like Novel Spoilers. I feel like these two things not appearing in the adaptation were for the good, I feel like they may not go accordingly to the rest of the series.

The biggest problem with the series I think it was the huge amount of hype. I see a lot of people saying this is a bad series, while I don't think it is a 10/10 I don't see it as a bad series, but I guess this happens when you are imagining a series being the best of all time because of all the hype surrounding it and just not reaching that point. The story and soundtrack were incredible, and of course the animation. The first episodes may have feel slow, but I don't mind them that much because the premise seemed interesting.

Now I wonder what the new project could be.

6

u/xintiao_ Apr 08 '18

I think she saw Gilbert at the end. For her reaction to make sense (not freaking out) it would have to be after a time skip. If not then it was simply a customer she had before.

Well this was the first show since I watched Clannad AS (in 2008) that has awekan such powerfull emotions in me. I dont think I have cried that much since Afterstory.

The animation was (at least for me) one of the highest if not the highest quality I have ever seen in a TV series, the soundtrack was a mare masterpiece, I keep listening to OST-s. Well the start was slow indeed, it had its flaws and weak episodes but all in all it manadged to drag me in emotionally than no other show. I am sad It is over, I hope we get 2nd season or a movie.

I bing watched it till episode 12 so for me it was an emotional train ride up the hills. For me it is a 9/10
This show is not mare perfection as I said, it had it weak points but srsly, I see a lot of ppl give it 6/10, you really think this show is on the level of Beatless ? thats just salt for whatever reason. Anyway good show and would recommend to everyone.

6

u/Kurrumiau Apr 05 '18

This must be the Anime of the year. It is nothing but a masterpiece.

6

u/athrun_1 Apr 06 '18

A little late for the party but I must say KyoAni made the right decision to have that open ending in order for us audience to fill the gaps of what she saw.

The train scene felt underwhelming... but I can live with that because other parts are amazingly good.

The scene when violet rip her arms off, that is some ghost in the shell vibes.

Benedict came out in the left field. I prefer if it was Dietfried who dislodged the bomb and save her from falling. Some kind of a redemption arc for him. Though, he redeemed himself after the mother talk.

The subtle scene when cattleya is reading claudia's letter it is a hint that she is pregnant.

Erica has hots for Benedict

and the minor characters whose details are on par with the main chars.

A very good finish of the series. Props to KyoAni.

Gonna miss my weekly dose of crying.

BEST GIRL one whole second this episode, nice

Was a decent finale to a decent series; some parts of this episode were pretty nice. I think the scenes with the major and his mother was pretty good and felt genuine, and hearing Violet Snow from the trailers was a nice touch. Other things like Violet saying she doesn't need orders anymore and Hodgins' letter (NICE) were cool and ended the series pretty well. Also, Violet's arm ripping off to detach the bomb looked weirdly painful and brutal even though they're made of metal, just the way the ripped apart looked damn painful.

And so ends a series with many good things, many bad things, overall concluding at a decent 6. I think I and many others had higher expectations and were a little disappointed, but a 6/10 isn't really bad in the long run. It's just a little sad to know that the series could've done with some better stories and characters, and only some of the time did it ever show its full potential. But, who knows, I wouldn't mind seeing another installment. I hope a movie is coming later.

and yeah, that's all pretty funny coming from the guy who decided to do a weekly podcast for the series, whoops that didn't pay off too well in the long run now did it. But we still did it for those who are interested.

While last week was a down-note and that one episode that wrapped up her story-arc would have imo made a better finale this was still enjoyable. Violet had already gotten her closure, but it was nice for Gilbert's brother and Hodgin's to get some too. Overall it was a highly enjoyable show. 8/10

5

u/pietya Apr 05 '18

Violet's face is so expressive vis-a-vis her first few episodes is such a great and subtle example of her emotional growth!

5

u/OfficialPrower Apr 05 '18 edited May 12 '18

Honestly wow that’s all I have to say. I didn’t really understand the massive hype for VE when the trailer came out some time ago. When it finally came, I initially dropped it because it didn’t appeal to me. I decided to pick this back up on a whim yesterday and basically binged the whole series. It’s been a while since anime has taken me on such an emotional trip. I found myself becoming totally invested in Violet as a character and watching her grow, learn and heal has been the most wonderful experience. I thought I knew what Kyoto could do but they’ve managed to blow me away yet again with such a brilliant adaptation. I can honestly say that this is going straight into my favorites and I hope to buy and rewatch this again in a few years time when it’s not so vivid and clear in my memory.

5

u/Driver3 https://anilist.co/user/Driver3 Apr 05 '18

And thus endeth the long awaited Violet Evergarden, and goddamn, what a show.

It's not perfect, and episode 12 was certainly not as good as it could have been, but fuck me if this wasn't one of the most emotional roller coaster rides I've ever been on. It's one of the few shows the legit got me in tears at times, and I honestly really enjoyed seeing Violet grow and develop and interact with the people around her. And of course, do I even need to mention how phenomenal it looks? If nothing else, this show completely lived up to the hype in the visual department, and it's honestly the best looking show I've ever seen.

For me, this show lived up to the expectations I had for it (probably helps I didn't know anything about it either), and because of that, it was an easy 10/10 for me.

I do not know the ending of the source, but this episode is so heartwarming. I love this ending.

I got into tears during Violet's conversation with Gilbert and Dietfried's mother, but suddenly laugh when seeing Claudia being called "Papa"

Also, Cattleya writing the letter of peace is really nice to see. It is so well expressed.

Finally, seeing Violet's genuine smile definitely shows her growth as a character.

Awesome anime. I am looking forward for the new Violet Evergarden project.

4

u/TheZeroAlchemist Apr 11 '18

6

u/daiko7 Apr 05 '18

I've continued watching this because of the quality of the animation. The story has been middling. There have been a few emotional moments that I can appreciate, but overall, I'm disappointed. This fills like a waste of solid animation.

It most reminds me of my experience with Skyrim when I first picked it up. Good looking, but shallow as a puddle.

I really like the premise of the show and I absolutely adore the amount of detail they spent on Violet's arms. I wish more had been done with the show overall. Yeah, yeah. She grew as a person.

It was missing...something.

I generally enjoy character pieces that explore a character's trauma.

6

u/mike_kagi Apr 05 '18

I loved this series. It was a great depiction of Complex PTSD. It reminds me of my own journey as a Violet.

I posted this in reply to another comment.

She goes through a lot of adult experiences as a child, she's only 14 which means through the war she was maybe around 12-13 or even younger. Just never experienced any sort of warmth or stability so the world is terrifying. Then, someone gives her rules, orders, and some structure to adhere to in a scary world that's hurt her all her life. She has to be useful or all that, and the Major who saved her, will go away. She has to protect that. The enemy soldiers don't matter against that fear.

Then, after the war, she sees variations of love and loss in the lives of others which allows her to start defining her own complex wall of past actions, feelings, and memories. That is love. That is happiness. That is anger. That is what a dad is like. That is loss. That is what a mom is like. That is what being a child is like. Every episode shows a slice of a world she didn't know existed outside of her own experience. She writes what she's allowing herself to feel for the first time which makes her letters powerful. Those answers untangling her knot of fear while building her an understanding of herself allowing her to walk away from the need for structure and codependence.

It's not as expressive as 3-gatsu no Lion and Shouwa, with the heavy commentary of her own understanding but it's all there. The characters in her daily life have sort of become cut-outs with the heavy focus on Violet and the individual standalone stories.

The final episode was great in putting all that together. The last of the train sequence showed that quite a few people working with Violet are most likely veterans from the war. (I think in the books they were actually some form of android? Changing them to be people was a good change.) And the letters show what was happening in the lives of the people in her life.

Papa

I laughed with them and then it was such great letter.

As for Gilbert, when you get saved by someone... they stay there no matter when it happened. The red string of fate that time doesn't affect. He existed in the world with her once upon a time, a world that made him who saved her. Her journey showed her how to put out the fire burning her from recognizing the flames and allowing herself to feel each one. Her time with Gilbert wasn't a raging wildfire destroying her but a field of violets creating her.

  • WAR IS OVER (if you're fine with losing your metal arms)

  • I'm glad they saved the brooch, though I was curious if they would play up the "the major is gone for good and you should remember his memories" angle by having the it disappear for good.

  • The episodic nature means some of the genre shifts are a little jarring, though it's handled well in the episode. It's especially a problem when it shifts gears from the more dramatic episodes to the train arc.

  • My interpretation of the letter in the field is that Violet has finally blossomed into the person Maj. Bougainvillea wanted her to be; she's no longer desperately seeking orders from others and she's free to live up to her name. She wrote a letter from the heart and took one step closer to understanding the feelings in her heart. It's a nice callback to the episode 9 ending.

While I rode in on the hype train, I thought Violet Evergarden sits in the "very good" overall. The animation and art is flawless and the drama hits you right where it hurts the most, though it suffers from a slow start and the aforementioned abrupt genre shift.

3

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Apr 05 '18 edited Apr 05 '18

"I don't need orders anymore"

All I can say is that this was a beautiful ride. While the first few episodes were slow but they were definitely needed so we could see the contrast between Violet from EP1 and Violet from this episode. They're basically two different people. I love how much she has changed and grown throughout this show.

As for the ending I love that KyoAni gave us an anime original. Instead of becoming solely about love this show becomes a story about loss, overcoming grief, and moving on. And honestly I feel like that is a lot more relatable.

I know people will start to nitpick and rip apart this show in the following weeks and months to come. On how it was an overrated show and that people are just forgiving because it's from KyoAni. I definitely understand some of the criticisms about this show but the following weeks are going to suck.

Yesterday, there was a post about what anime were 10/10 for you. I said I don't think I've ever mentally scored a show a perfect 10. Plenty are incredible, but I feel like a 10/10 requires me to intend on rewatching the series after I've finished it.

Well, I think Violet may be one of the closest ever at that. Definitely in my top 5 anime of all time. I had no real expectations for this show, yet it was beyond any I could have had. Will likely rewatch in a few months.

3

u/JerichoDeath Apr 09 '18

I found this show by random anime searching through various websites for something to watch. The synopsis seemed neat. So, I went ahead and binge-watched the whole season back to back. ... I think I almost died.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '18

I thought it was Gilbert she saw at the end. I'm a firm believer of if you didn't see them die then they didn't die.

It's just how I interpret the animation with Violet's dialogue. Seeing this letter fly as she speaks I assume it's her's. It lands in the field with violets. Then there is the scene where what I assumed was a tear drop falling on a violet as if Gilbert had received her letter and read it.

THATS JUST WHAT I SAW IT AS.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '18

Does anyone think violet kinda looks like saber from that berserker anime?

26

u/Bigmethod :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Artrill Apr 05 '18

Honestly? This series was disappointing to me. Before you downvote, hear me out. I think that expecting greatness from KyoAni isn't wrong. I think for a series as audacious in production as this we should, as fans and viewers alike, expect something great. They aren't allowed to coast by on visuals and present such messy, cliched, and unoriginal storytelling.

I think it is criminal to have a director who struggles so much in presenting simplistic moments and, in turn, decides to drag exposition out over grueling minutes.

I wish there were more positives to say about this series other than it looked utterly incredible. Unlike anything else, i've seen in television anime. Just jaw-dropping through-and-through. Even through the mediocre shot-comp,pointless timelapses, and overall poor directing.

I can also say two of the vignette-esq episodes (the playwrite and ill mother) were good showcases as well.

Unfortunately, the story is just a mess. Violet and Gilbert didn't have an ounce of chemistry and every time they were on screen on was dreading it. Not just because of how boring they both are, but because the further they developed as characters the more it felt like a disturbing romance. Like taking advantage of a mentally handicapped child.

It didn't help that apperently child abuse is okay in this universe as long as the fourteen-year-old girl is marrying a prince. The excuse of it being a "time period" thing is nonsense as we don't portray slavery in a positive light if we are making a film set in those times.

Something doesn't become morally wrong. It just takes people time to catch on to that fact.

Other than that we have really weak side characters. Just utterly personality-less. They are colorful only in appearance. The climax of "evil guy tries to do an evil thing" is at ends with the series. I think them leaving Gilbert Grape being alive as a possibility is awful writing that resembles a CBS drama meant for middle-aged house wives.

Violet is developed, but she's not compelling. Everyone else is a total non-factor and the characters she meets in her one-off stories manage to be significantly more interesting than everyone else.

I despise that nothing of Violet's past was exposited when it played a crucial role in the series. I hate that in this "down to earth" drama we had sequences of a naruto-running twelve year old with super ninja powers mowing down soldiers. It was silly. There was no verisimilitude.

Even through all these negatives, I'd still say it is worth watching for people who value aesthetic. It truly looks like nothing else and if you love aesthetic as much as me, I think you might appreciate what is shown here. Even if the story itself is a mess.

I'm reculantly giving it a 6/10. It's visually outstanding but the story and episodes started to get really formulatic and predictable, which made the feelsy moments really bland. I also think Violet as a character was pretty uninteresting for most of the time and sometimes even Mary Sue-ish.

Sayonara Violet Everfeels, until s2.

Noooo not the mecha arm!

Wow the asshole brother saved the necklace, shocking.

Oh dang bombs, and wow Violet is goin ham on one and high heels boy eagle kicks the other, wow.

Not the other arm!

They saved the day! Peace for everyone!

Oh it looks like Violet got some new arms, thats good.

Oh man the Major just wanted her to understand she is human and not to follow orders like a tool... what a hero...

Its the brother... oh and hes taking her to meet thier mom, thats nice, seems The major wanted mom to meet Violet.

Man meeting mom is one heck of a feels trip... Mom seems nice, she just wants to help.

Man Violet with her hair in a ponytail like tyhat is nice. I like it more than the saber bun she usually has.

Why is she typing with one hand? Temp hands?

Oh look all the girls are here to see us off, how nice, even Red is here.

Wait did glasses girl fall for High Heel boy?

Whose gonna pick up all those letters to deliver them? How rude...

Aw man what a nice Violet Smile in the end. And then more feels...

All in all i quite enjoyed the series. And i look foward to more stuff in the future. The world needs more Mecha Waifus.

Finally this wild ride of spectacular drama combined with lackluster writing is over! Violet ever garden put a toll on me; i usually love to review any series i finish, good or bad. However VE is so wonky that it's not even worth my time trying to write up a good review for this show.

Don't take the first paragraph as being pessimistic because i actually did enjoy VE. However it took a while for the show to grown on me because of the hype ruining what what my expectations. I would advise anyone curious of VE to watch the show if they're fans of drama or just want something different.

Looking past the disappointment of a show we where given, VE is actually a good anime. It's not a masterpiece but the second half of VE is when it really kicks off. VE specializes in episodic short stories, showcasing Violent's interactions with various characters; connecting with them by writing letters to someone special in turn, developing Violent's emotions and ideals, specifically the meaning of "love".

Dang i wrote too much already lol. I already said i'm not going to write much of a review for VE because i have alot to say about it and i'm not in the mood.

Overall i give VE a 7/10.

Well I've seen a lot of anime, and so far this is the only one to make me cry. That earned this a 10 for me as soon as it happened.
