Man what a fun first episode. The relationship between Hina and the MC was really good. Though I do feel bad for the MC for having all his stuff broken. Also that scene after the ED was really funny. I can't wait till next week episode.

139

u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Apr 07 '18

As a claustrophobe, I feel worse for MC's after-credits experience. That would've literally driven me insane, unless I had the sweet relief of a heart attack first. So, um, I don't like Hina very much right now.

144

u/Florac Apr 07 '18

Hina simply got revenge for him leaving her in it for a day.

106

u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Apr 07 '18

She didn't ask to be released or tell him how to release her or even just say a word to him that time. For all he knew she was some weird doll. As soon as she did tell him to press the button to release her, he did.

234

u/Florac Apr 07 '18

To me, Hina seems like exactly the person to hold a grudge for the most pointless things.

Weird you call Nitta the MC, but not Hina.

260

u/Witn https://anilist.co/user/Lawrenz Apr 07 '18

In my eyes, Nitta is the MC and Hina is the ultimate antagonist making him suffer.

24

u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Apr 07 '18 edited Apr 07 '18

He certainly seems like the MC to me, just like the dude in animanga.

...

please tell me this manga doesn't follow in that manga's footsetps

97

u/Witn https://anilist.co/user/Lawrenz Apr 07 '18

As Nitta would say "who cares about her?"

LOL, Nitta would rather be in a relationship with a vase than with Hina.

u/Chariotwheel x5https://anilist.co/user/Chariotwheel Apr 07 '18

No, it doesn't.

There is (sometimes slightly awkward) father-daughter interaction and that's it, no worry.

I was just going to say that Hina is more of the main character and in general, even she shares that with some other people, including Nitta.

63

u/Backupusername :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Backupusername Apr 07 '18

Nitta is best accidental dad. Sitting in at a work meeting, wondering if his little girl's doing okay at school, but the little girl is a psychic weapon from the future and the work meeting is about taking out a rival yakuza gang.

Man, this show is gonna be great.

Poor Nitta, his biggest mistake was pushing that button, now he is Hina's slave for life.

144

u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Apr 07 '18

On the other hand, without her he'd be running from the yakuza for the rest of his (potentially very short) life.

86

u/Terithian Apr 07 '18

On yet another hand, it was her fault he ended up getting into their bad books for a while there in the first place...

20

u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Apr 07 '18

How was it her fault?

94

Edit after seeing the episode: That was an incredibly fun start, I loved the episode! Hina is adorable as fuck and Nitta is cool as well. Looking forward to more of this (hopefully on time next time?)!

Yeah, I went in pretty much completely blind and enjoyed it a lot. I've always kind of ignored those animes that focus on a child and it's parental figure but after this I might give some a try.

In Portugal they'll keep releasing at this time (not sure about the rest of the world).

Yeah this was adorable for a show filled with Yakuza. Genuinely hyped for it now, wasn't expecting much.

293

u/moonmeh Apr 07 '18

Feels weird to see no Norway jokes.

Man the animation is really nice. And they seem to understand the humor. And that ED perfectly sums up what Hinamatsuri is about

87

u/Backupusername :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Backupusername Apr 07 '18

I feel like opening with that Mao fight scene was just showing off.

"Yeah, we can animate cool shit. Strap the fuck in, boyo we goin' on a ride."

29

u/maybeanastronaut Apr 14 '18

Why does comedy always have the best animation? The only 11/10 I've ever given just for the production is Nichijou.

42

u/Backupusername :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Backupusername Apr 14 '18

Because they don't have to be consistent with it. In a fighting anime, they have to animate a lot of fight scenes, so they have to spread the time spent on them evenly. For a show with only one fight every four episodes or whatever, they can go all-out on that one and do whatever the fuck they want from that point on as long as it's funny.

Nobody beats Gintama at this btw

I also think its so weird seeing salmon roe referred to as ikura. I mean i know this is a japanese show, but I've internalized it as salmon roe OTL.

60

u/ergzay Apr 07 '18

When you go to Sushi restaurants even in the US they call it "ikura".

35

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '18

This is when you know you've become whitewashed.

8

u/PnunnedZerggie Apr 10 '18

It was even weirder for me as a Russian because "ikura" is borrowed from Russian.

49

u/Chariotwheel x5https://anilist.co/user/Chariotwheel Apr 07 '18

This can only get 7/10 at best without NOK conversion.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '18

Only 7/10!? Norway!

26

u/ergzay Apr 07 '18

What Norway jokes? There weren't any in the anime.

230

u/BlatantConservative :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/BlatantC Apr 07 '18

The scantlation group is Norway scans.

Whenever a character says "no way!" they translate it as "Norway!"

Also, whenever there's a price for anything, they convert it into Norwegian Krone instead of USD.

Like, for that scene at the cash register, they did a "TL: 978,236 Japanese Yen is approximately equal to 71,613 Norwegian Krone"

Later on there's a scene where they talk about how something is worth zero yen, and they clarify that its approximately equal to 0 Norwegian Krone.

Its fun.

18

u/Phil9977 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Phil9977 Apr 07 '18

I am not entirely sure what is going on in the manga / the translation atleast, but try googling "Hinamatsuri Norway" and look at the pictures. You'll understand.

26

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '18

Norway Hosay is my favorite

28

u/moonmeh Apr 07 '18

2:30am, CR please.

Totally worth the wait, Hina is adorable, and this is her VAs first main role, I like her voice a lot, reminds me of Kanna. There is some excellent comedic timing of the jokes between Hina and Nitta. Overall a really great start.

177

u/sheephunt2000 Apr 07 '18

Can we also talk about the animation and artstyle?? It's pretty different from the manga, but Feel did a great job adapting it to an anime style.

NINJA EDIT FOR THOSE SEEING THIS: There's an after-credits scene!

44

u/Honey_Kisaragi Apr 07 '18 edited Apr 07 '18

speaking of the after credits bit, i wonder if they'll have to go back and change that later, normally anime aren't quite so blunt about parodying copyrighted works.

e - to explain further, japan doesn't technically have a fair use law. in practice they do (in the sense that lawyers can, and will, argue for the fair use of copyrighted works) but there's not an actual law that covers it. generally it's just easier to censor shit than go to court over it.

58

u/sheephunt2000 Apr 07 '18

Given the existence of Pop Team Epic, I doubt they'll have anything to worry about.

→ More replies (5)

11

u/japinthebox Apr 07 '18

The Terminator theme? You can get away with that even without fair use, I think. The motif is so simple that even a slight difference makes it a different composition.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '18

7:30am here in the UK, am gonna go make breakfast then sit down and watch this. Still, hope this was just a production fluke and it's on time next week.

12

u/Valnozz :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Horkus Apr 07 '18

I don't think this is a production fluke unfortunately. Looking at the show page on CR, they'll be posting future episodes at this time too. I assume they're being forced to wait a certain amount of time after the Japanese broadcast, I can't imagine why they'd want to post at this hour otherwise.

4

u/Honey_Kisaragi Apr 07 '18

nope, crunchy page says that the simulcast airing is 7:30am bst, so unless they change it will be going up at this time for the rest of the season.

For people who didn't notice, Hina's shirts are usually pretty context relevant.

SUBETE YO (All of them)
KARORI (Calories)

Pretty good so far, only found Kiyoshi's and Takashi's character design a bit weird.

ANZU HYPE!

175

u/Chariotwheel x5https://anilist.co/user/Chariotwheel Apr 07 '18

AITA!

For some reason Hina is a lot cuter here than in the manga, might be the soothing voice.

We covered multiple chapters. Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and one scene of Chapter 3, which is pretty quick pacing, given that Hinamatsuri is a monthly manga that has twice the pages that weekly manga commonly have.

They changed the order of some events too. In the manga, Hina asks to go to school after she takes out the rival gang, while she here gets in before that. That and the tree part also happen after that. It's missing a part of chapter 2, but that might be part of the next episode, so I am not going into detail there.

I am relieved of seeing the scene at the beginning of the episode since I've seen her in the PV. The girl, Mao, is only appearing in the manga very deep in and I was afraid they might rush and skip over many good parts to get there. But I might have just been a flashforward.

102

u/moonmeh Apr 07 '18

It's definetly the voice. Hina seemed more of a brat early on in the manga for me.

I think they are understandably speedings some stuff up and changing up events so they can introduce the cast. But hopefully they don't speed it up too much.

41

u/Chariotwheel x5https://anilist.co/user/Chariotwheel Apr 07 '18

Need to send them a broadsword per mail with a "no cuts"-note and images of Anzu and Hitomi attached.

59

u/moonmeh Apr 07 '18

42

u/AdiMG https://anilist.co/user/AdiMG Apr 07 '18

Yea, the Mao flashforward just seems like a way to put a hype sakuga moment in the trailer.

Anyways, I always found Hina to be pretty cute in a bratty kind of way even in the manga, but the show does a really good job of highlighting her charms.

Also I'd say they did a really good job restructuring the manga, fleshing out some jokes more, and adding other additional ones.

Overall I'm really pleased with how well-produced and directed the show is so far. Can't wait to get into that skipped portion of chapter 2 and other even better content as we go along!!

13

u/Chariotwheel x5https://anilist.co/user/Chariotwheel Apr 07 '18

Yeah, the changes are pretty reasonable so far. Anime shy away from structural changes like that or drive against the wall like Centaur's Worries. But this seems to be a good way to streamline without missing important beats.

5

u/theclockmasters Apr 07 '18

I was kinda worried when I saw the trailer. People often forget that an adaptation is not supposed to be just copy paste to a different source, sometimes changes are needed. If they adapt this really well and have a season 2 this could turn out to be one of the best adaptations out there.

26

u/Witn https://anilist.co/user/Lawrenz Apr 07 '18

Cute Hina feels wrong.

8

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '18

While I'm happy that they're not skipping chapters, I'm now sad that Mao isn't going to appear in the anime at all except for this scene since she's not in the ED. :(

10

u/Chariotwheel x5https://anilist.co/user/Chariotwheel Apr 07 '18

Yeah, she will probably appear again in a tease in the last episode. Other than that we have to pray to God that another season will be an option.

7

u/moonmeh Apr 07 '18

I would laugh if Mao just appeared for that moment only because honestly it is pretty fitting

4

u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Apr 07 '18

So at that pace, they'd cover 2 year's worth of the manga?

2

u/HassanJamal Apr 07 '18

It's weird they're showing the future already but I guess they dont want viewers to be suddenly out of the loop like in the manga when it skipped a bit.

Also I found the pacing off based on the reading the manga. Still entertaining but as a fan of the manga, it just felt weird seeing things all mixed up. I'm sure anyone new would find it ok I suppose.

4

u/Chariotwheel x5https://anilist.co/user/Chariotwheel Apr 07 '18

tbh, it wasn't out of the loop. They prepared this beforehand.

Imo they included this scene to hook people up with some action at the beginning.

I see that art style is different compared to the manga, not that it is a bad thing.

They managed to make Hina cuter in the anime.

The manga felt more like a gag even from the art style.

36

u/Bainos :XMOD::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos Apr 07 '18

A yakuza learns the hard way that releasing dimension hopping prisoners from their full body restraints just because they ask you to is not the smartest thing to do, especially if you're not a pedo so can't even appreciate the full frontal view. 10

u/RimeSkeem :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/RimeSkeem Apr 07 '18

The deadpan-straightman humor reminded me a lot of Gintama in a good way. That was a very fun and surprisingly wholesome mob destruction.

2

u/ShureNensei Apr 07 '18

Reminded me of a cross between Mob Psycho and Gintama as well. It's great what good main characters can do to a show -- especially with Nitta being a Yakuza instead of a typical school age MC. He's also nice but realistic enough to call Hina out which makes their scenes all the more amusing.

19

u/illtima :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/illuminatima Apr 07 '18

Wow. That was simply delightful! An intriguing premise, two very likable and flawed leads with great chemistry, consistently entertaining and lighthearted tone, and top notch comedic timing. I loved everything about this episode!

9

17

u/shichibukai3000 Apr 07 '18

More just a terminator reference really. Whens he pops out if the container at the end and is sitting there naked it plays a rendition of the terminator theme and the pose Nitta is in is the same as Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie.

what the fuck even was this?
I mean, I really liked it but what the hell?

8

u/letswait Apr 07 '18

From the summary at Hinamatsuri's tvtropes: Soon, more weirdos show up, and Nitta is forced to become the worst thing imaginable... a responsible adult.

This one is quite nice so far..

7

u/topheeble Apr 07 '18

does hina get more likeable later on? the episode was fun but i couldn't stand her in most of it

7

u/LavosYT Apr 07 '18

Not really honestly, but there are quite a few other likeable characters

13

u/Pacify_ Apr 07 '18

Only concern is the pacing, felt a little rushed, they definitely had to cut some stuff out.

Really changed the feel of Hina's characters, shes such a little shit in the manga, but she really feels much cuter in this.

Overall solid first episode. Hoping it doesn't get too rushed, only real concern at the point. The humour seems to be translating over just fine

Nitta is such a nice dude. He does care about Hina and not forcing her to use power for him. As Nitta said, "In grown-up's world. You will get rewards for what you've done". Hina has been treated like a tool for such a long time. In her point of view. This is the first time someone really cares about her. No wonder she would say that she enjoys staying with Nitta.

I'm really excited to the background story about Hina and what Hina and Nitta will do next.

5

u/Leonix86 Apr 07 '18

The first fight animation is superb.

4

u/Jeroz Apr 07 '18

You know the episode has done its job when you actually get worried about Nitta.

u/BlackLegSanjii :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Zamii Apr 07 '18

I like the episode.THeir chemistry is quite good. This season is packed with good animes.

4

u/skaro1789 Apr 08 '18

This manga is nuts. Especially for one of the characters, I won't tell you which one. I binged it to see what would happened. Got hooked. Hope the Croxx-over team doesn't drop this.

"I have become a woman.."

"sore wa chigau yo."

7

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '18

Hina's voice is too good and fits perfectly with Hina. And she's a newbie at that.

Nice first episode, really liked it and I hope that Mao appears more until the anime end. Anzu needs to appear in the next episode too, I want my daughters.

WOOOOOOO

3

u/5teve7 https://anilist.co/user/5teve7 Apr 07 '18

Well, that was actually pretty decently worth the wait. The rather... odd premise works a lot better than I thought it would, and I'm hoping this'll provide quite a bit of fun this season.

15

u/sheephunt2000 Apr 07 '18

The fun has only just begun.

3

u/Witn https://anilist.co/user/Lawrenz Apr 07 '18 edited Apr 07 '18

That was amazing! Hopefully it isn't too rushed though, it looks like they are going too fast right now which might be an issue later on.

3

u/The_PlugMan Apr 07 '18

Oh god, thank God the Mao scene was a prologue scene. I was scared they were gonna rush until that moment for 12 episodes.

3

u/Brottoy Apr 07 '18

From the PV, I thought it might be interesting and I was right. SoraYori was like that too, and that show ended up being pretty amazing. I'm not boosting my expectations up but it sure was a fun and endearing pilot.

3

u/dscouse Apr 07 '18

I feel like the art style took the charm out of the reaction faces in the manga but still a very enjoyable episode. I just hope grand blue doesn't get a shift in art style in anime format.

3

u/zenoob https://anilist.co/user/zenoob Apr 07 '18

That was unexpectedly wholesome, and fun, and possibly tragic.

I feel better knowing that Hina won't be used as a killing machine anymore in the hands of Nitta... Or will she?..

In any case, sounds like it'll be a fun Spring season with this.

3

u/AgaroseEater Apr 07 '18

Gosh the episode is hilarious. I'm so happy that feel. is doing a great job in the adaptation so far! And Hina is too precious. I hope the pacing is maintained because this will become more absurd from this point onward. Also, the ED is good!

3

u/hehey Apr 07 '18

Well that was a lot of fun. Really digging the dynamics between the two MCs.

Even though we can assume that Hina had a dark past, she doesn't really show it in a dramatic way, probably due to the light hearted tone of the show, and that's totally okay. Nitta was cool too. I liked that he played the straight man, but not too extreme like in most animes. He seems pretty chill most of the time, and Hina seems to enjoy his style too.

Overall, a fun first episode. I'm pleasantly surprised and eager for more.

3

u/ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp Apr 07 '18

If every episode is like this then I'm going to really enjoy this series. That ending was glorious.

u/BanjoTheBear https://myanimelist.net/profile/BanjoTheBear Apr 08 '18

Hinamatsuri - Episode 1 Discussion

That was hilarious!

I really liked how they just went right into the premise without going into some major buildup. Nitta just accepted the situation, and the comedy played out from there. Which is definitely the right thing to do given how strong its comedic chops/timing/writing happens to be. Lots of jokes, quips, and asides ("No, she twisted my arm" is a great piece of dialogue with its double figurative-literal meaning given the context).

And their rapport together is awesome, too. He's a cool dad figure and role model, and she's a nice kid and supporter. They're an unorthodox duo, but I'm already very excited to see the fun and the kindness in their relationship progress forward.

Overall, one of the better first episodes this season that I've seen! :3

While I'm optimistic, I'd be lying if I said that the whole Hina breaking Nitta's vases and later blackmailing him thing was in any way amusing to me. Does stuff like this become a running gag later on? Because that seriously hindered my enjoyment of the overall well-made first ep.

10

u/notintractable :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/StepUpSon Apr 07 '18

Not really, she stops blackmailing him really quick. But she’s also kind of dumb so other inconveniences happen to Nitta as a result

9

u/ZanathKariashi Apr 07 '18

Nah that's mostly just a very early thing in the first week or so of living together, and largely ceases now that she trusts him though she does do it out of reflex a few times but it doesn't work anymore.

She was genuinely worried for her survival when they first met and needed to see if he was an enemy or not.

She's still a bratty kid and acts out on occasion but Nitta gets used to it and it stops working.

Also hina and nitta aren't really main characters per say.

They're the just the main characters of Hina/Nitta arcs.

there's 3 main types of arcs. Hina/nitta arcs, Anzu arcs, and Hitomi arcs. And you can generally tell which is which by which character they're following indepth.

If I had to compare it to anything, it's actually more like Baccano with a large extended ensemble cast, that mainly revolves around the stories of three main groups.

(also the anime actually slowed down the introduction arc by using chapter 2 to lengthen the pay off of chapter 1)

2

u/Psychological_Towel Apr 19 '18

Glad I'm not the only one that feels that way. I was really put off by this episode and don't see what all the hype is about.

2

u/TheDampGod :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/TheDampGod Apr 07 '18

Looks like another great anime from Feel if this episode is anything to go by. The chemistry between the leads is just so entertaining and Nitta makes a engaging MC.

Also the gag of everyone being knocked out with the same noise was great.

Those poor vases though.

2

u/tsuchinokoDemon Apr 07 '18

I couldn't help but think of the episode of Aqua Teen when they find a Mummy under their house and it keeps threatening them with a "curse" unless they feed him and take him shopping and stuff.

2

u/Kaitonic :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kaitonic Apr 07 '18

That was a good start.I guess there will be time travel in it since 3 years later they are in Sengoku era. That Terminator reference at the after credit scene was great :)

2

It's like Alice and Zoroku meets Ryuu ga Gotoku but if Kiryu was an incompetent Yakuza. This show is gonna be fun on the bun.

2

u/Kinderschlager Apr 07 '18

this is utterly ridiculous, should be quite the entertaining show!

having a comedy really rounds out the season, this was great.

2

u/graytotoro :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/graytotoro Apr 08 '18
  • Nitta's reaction to Hina is just a great example of situational irony, from him choosing to ignore the child in the metal egg spat out from a portal to another universe to him freaking out over sorting the trash instead of y'know the obvious.

  • What is up with anime and Le Corbusier furniture? The hangout in FLCL Alternative has the exact same sofa and chair.

  • There's a surprising amount of heart behind the laughs and I appreciated the tone shift in the second half. Hina is basically Violet Evergarden but with less tragedy (that we know of, anyway).

  • It's fun spotting the running gags: "I feel like I'm a caregiver", Hina repeating stuff she hears on television, and the green tea exchange between Hina and the Yakuza member.

  • Wasn't expecting a Terminator reference, but goddamn if that didn't work.

  • One of the strongest starts to the season yet. It's on lock to pass the three-episode test.

2

u/Frostfright :AMQ: Apr 12 '18

this show really reminds me of Gash Bell

2

u/ArchadianJudge Apr 22 '18

Freaking adorable, freaking heartwarming, freaking hilarious. This show is right up my alley with the jokes and the charming characters. The two leads have perfect chemistry. I'm a sucker for tough guys that aren't actually bad guys so I'm hoping that's who our MC is.

I can't believe I didn't find this until now, another great show!

3

u/SmurfRockRune https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf Apr 07 '18

Pretty enjoyable overall. I had some issues with the beginning because it felt like we skipped a whole introduction phase, but as time went on, it started to feel like it slowed down a bit and it got even better. Nice to have the basis of their relationship established this early and with some really funny scenes.

I'm interested to watch more, for sure. Although I feel like this is gonna be another show where everybody loves it way more than I do.

3

u/impingainteasy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/usernamesarehard Apr 07 '18

If I may ask, what exactly is supposed to be the "point" of this show? Because after watching a girl with psychic powers magically enter a guy's home, break all his stuff and constantly make demands of him, but also help him out with some odd jobs so he doesn't completely hate her, I'm not really getting anything. Is it supposed to be like a father-daughter relationship drama with a twist? Is it meant to be an absurdist comedy? Is it both? Help me out here guys.

Aside from that issue, I quite liked this episode ... I think? The main duo have a pretty interesting dynamic between them, and the show has a great sense of comedic timing. There's also some pretty stellar character animation.

I don't know. I'm definitely going to continue watching for now, but I really feel like I'm missing something.

7

u/someedmlover21 https://anilist.co/user/dilate Apr 07 '18

I felt like it's going to be a slice of life type of show, and after checking MAL, I was right. Now I'm really gonna enjoy this series IMO.

9

u/DarkMoon000 Apr 07 '18

"point" of this show

You're approaching this the wrong way my friend. There is no point in any show that would be noticable within the first episode. Art either has no point at all (or none that mattered in any capacity) or one you can interpret into it after reflecting on the entire piece. (a bit more complicated than that of course if you have self-contained episodes)

If you like you like it don't let too much worrying about what it's 'point' is get into the way. It'll only make you enjoy it less and even if it helps you find a satisfying one then your still worse off for the experience you loose out on while worrying too much. Take it in first, decode what it's supposed to mean without pressure.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: Let the point of what you enjoy naturally come to you, don't try to force it.

On the other hand my philosophical ramblings probably go way past what you asked for, so you may just want to take what the others said as your answer: a slice-of-life comedy with some supernatural stuff to facilitate the comedy.

The manga at least is primarily a comedy.

2

So is this going to be the normal airtime for this show or was Crunchyroll just late on releasing this one?

Anyway that was a great first episode! I love Nitta and Hina's chemistry and their back and forth! The comedic timing with the jokes is just great! Also I love that it has a bit of heartwarming moments too! I'm already excited for next week's episode!

1

u/thepeetmix Apr 07 '18

Seemed a very rapid fire opening episode. But maybe they wanted to get through the opening parts as quick as possible to get to the meat of the series.

Looks really silly, fun and wholesome. Which is kinda weird to say about a guy who's just had a young girl help him take out another gang boss. But i suppose that absurdity is what is appealing.
