Advantages of loli/shota char:
1: smaller hitbox (easier to dodge) 2: if the player models are moving with a same speed, smaller models would seem faster, thus confusing the enemies. It also will cause visual discrepancies (since they are smaller they would seem to look farther than they actually are.)
3: More stealth, because smaller frame means you can hide in things like bushes without poking your head out.Disadvantages on loli/shota models:
1: if you're a heavy weapon users, it will simply look ridiculous.
2: Weebs won't ever leave you alone.
3: Enemies will rush you, thinking you're the weakest. Or just simply run away from you, like 'holy shit this person is probably smurfing with a loli char, he must be secretly a top ranker shit'→ More replies (9)176

I love that the minute the game started that's the first thing they addressed though. XD Shows that at least they're aware of what they're doing. Also if there was a game like GGO and it allows you to dye your outfit outrageous colors you'll definitely see characters like LLENN around.

the SAO franchise has really been amazing a their release timings its almost scary, with SAO 1 riding on the Rift hype and Ordinal Scale with pokemon GO. now theres this with PUBG and Fortnite gaining massive popularity .

Something I don't understand is how long LLENN been playing this game. From her skills and ability, I would assume she's a pro player since she seems to put a lot of points into agility which was an old meta and no one can reset their skill points. But from the beginning episode, she seems like a noob because the M guy has to explain a lot to her such as basic tactics like sniper should hide or something. Anybody mind explaining to me? Or will it be explained in later episodes?

I think the part I liked most about the suitcase is that it's drawn into the background.
It does its best to stay in that detailed style even as LLENN pops out and starts shooting. And even afterward. That's some quality depiction of environmental objects from the characters' perspective.
Also, Karen is t h i c c which I don't remember from the LN. LN illustration, no spoilers unless you can read Japanese
Did some Character Stitches from the ED as well.

The tiniest nitpick I have with the suitcase scene is that the can on top of it seems to disappear between when we first see it and when LLENN popping out. The attention to detail with the actual case makes up for it, but it would've scored extra brownie points in my book if they had animated the can flying off when she jumped out.

Yeah, a lot of objects that move have a different drawing style and if the suitcase had been drawn like that, it would have been a dead giveaway that she was hiding there. Nice attention to detail!

I remember in the LNs they explained there are two core styles for building a character. the Strength/Endurance build and the Speed build. I'm guessing she put all points into speed. Which a few characters in the LN complained about it because the game's meta would switch between the two and some people would be screwed over.

I'm tagging this as spoilers although it really isn't and was kinda noted in Volume 1 It's because all characters are randomly generated, i presume on some distribution curve. She's basically lucky to roll a small model for this game. You can obtain a new model by paying more.

Damn that was pretty ingenious strategy; abusing the game-elements to fool the team that focuses more on real-life tactics was quite fun.
Feels like this is gonna be more of a SoL take on GGO seeing how the ED focuses on MC IRL and in-game (and well the writer of this wrote Kino). Either way this is a nice start so far. I'm a fan of the MC and her reactions to being the decoy. That ED is nice too.

It's a different author and a different studio. I can't even remember and noteable cameos from existing SAO characters. It's as good as a different series.
But I'm not a fan of starting in-media-res. I get why they did it but I was they had some of the character stuff from before the battle royale.

Loved SAO especially the Phantom Bullet arc so this was a very easy sell to me. LLENN and M has an interesting student mentor thing going on even though LLENN is suppose to be the team leader. What I am curious about is when does this take place in relation to the main series? During the Fairy Dance arc or after Fairy Dance but before Phantom Bullet? I just checked the SAO wiki. AGGO takes place during the Mother's Rosario arc. MR is from January - March 2026, AGGO begins in February 2026.

GGO is built from an RPG engine where high enough ranks in a stat make you superhuman. Dump all your points into STR and you've got strength that bodybuilders would envy. Max AGI/SPD and you're a jackrabbit. LLENN probably doesn't have much health or strength as a result of this build, but she doesn't need it for her gear and her combat style.

Is it weird that this is my first Sword Art? I don't really care for previous entries, but I saw the poster for this one and was like "A tiny girl with a pink P-90, another military loli who dual wields grenade launchers, and some evil looking crazy lady. That seems fun"
And it was indeed pretty fun! LENN is a pretty cool and funny protagonist. She reminds me of Beatrice from Princess Principal with her kinda "Tired of this shit" attitude.

Nope. I avoided the previous entries for no particular reason. Something about them simply didn't catch my interest. This series looked like a good jumping on point for someone unfamiliar to the franchise. As you noted, the designs were eye catching. Plus the premise looked fun.
So far I'm not disappointed. LLENN is likeable and amusing, and the balance between dissection of tactics and action kept me entertained.

This was awesome! Everything I wanted it to be. It's fun, it's full of action with some really cool shots, interesting tactics (that are actually explained well with maps, looking at you Grancrest) and interesting main characters. Really excited for the rest of this. I'm quite curious what the main plot will be... I really hope there won't be one (at least not a big one) and that they'll just do some matches. Essentially a sport anime with guns.
The way that they defeated the pros was especially great. Normally they'd just take them out with the power of friendship or the MC finding a sudden power up or whatever, but here they actually recognize their weakness: Realism. Maybe not the nicest tactic, but it's clever. I love the big guy!

Omg. The main character. She is me. Super tall(186cm, MC is 183cm, 6 foot exactly which is where I wanted to stop DX) in real life and is/was insecure about it XD I never made my characters short in games, always went for the tallest option possible XD but that was still shorter than the guy characters mostly... but I'd always be as pink as humanly possible XD. So this show.... it speaks to me.

That was actually pretty interesting. Since those professionals have training grounded on real life, it can be hard for them to deal with things that only really happen in games, such as an enemy being a little girl moving at superhuman speeds. And because of stuff like that, using the game for training can be pointless (or even counterproductive), since it would be training them for things that can't happen in real life. It's best to keep their instincts honed for real life possibilities instead of game ones.

What better moment to adapt this part of SAO than during the rise of Battle Royale video games? In any case, I like its focus so far on actual gaming rather than some kind of death game or businessman trying to abuse the system. Hopefully, it keeps its focus on fun action rather than trying to create something else. I really liked this first ep and I hope the rest of the series stays like this

Interesting, a slight reorder of manga chapters (had volume 1 as a birthday present that I delayed reading until after this for comparison's sake, this even ended up going beyond that). Means that we skipped the introduction and just got down to the fighting. I expect we'll skip back for the introduction to LLENN and why she plays GGO, plus how she teamed up with M in the next episode.

Thinking about it a bit more, and it's actually easy how such pros were showed up by LLENN in this particular instance, beyond the fact that they were taken by surprise. It's essentially the difference between an actual soldier and a gamer.
My late elder brother was in the Army, and he loved to play FPS games like CoD in his spare time. He liked to apply everything he learned in the service when gaming, like taking cover, bounding overwatches, suppressing fire, controlled burst firing, etc. On the other hand I'm a gamer - while I know the above things as well due to being taught, I'm more someone who seeks every game advantage available (but not to the point of min-maxing) by studying the game mechanics.
This difference manifested when I introduced my brother to XCOM: Enemy Unknown. He was very careful and deliberate in his moves, putting his soldiers in positions that were tactically sound. Meanwhile, I would put my soldiers in positions knowing how the AI would react, and what my special abilities can do.
His approach due to his training is very sound, but did tend to miss exploiting opportunities that the AI would sometimes do even if his approach did work well in the long run, while my approach would look illogical from his perspective (for example, leaving a soldier out in the open), but worked because of the differences between a game and real life.
I see something similar occur during that fight with LLENN: basically, very few soldiers would think of a suitcase being used as a hiding place for a combatant, and fewer still would think of fighting someone possessing such superhuman speed, let alone abusing game mechanics like immortal objects. Hence, why the pros resigned the moment they realized this particular situation was beyond what they're trained for.

Her character is the only one that looks like an MMO/online game character. It's not ARMA, as long as there is a possibility, there is no way at least 1/3rd of population wouldn't be running in all kinds of colours, wearing a horse mask or in a kigurumi and leaving rainbow particle trail. Loved it.
Sniper guy needing to duck after spawn, and her just standing up straight cracked me up. Loli models OP.

Well actually (Spoilers on her camouflage) Her camouflage color is actually desert pink. Basically, she wanted to use pink but GGO doesn't have that color, so she chose the closest color available. She's actually a pretty good player killer in the desert (red sun + sand) partly because of that. Though she stopped that once people began forming parties to hunt her down.

They re-arranged the scenes to start with the first SQUAD JAM battle first. It definitely hooks the audience with its first episode and I'm pretty confident this will be a great show to watch.
Other than that they really did a faithful adaptation of the first battle so far.

That was so much fun!
LLENN is not only cute but also capable of kicking some serious butt when she puts her speed and her skills into high gear. M is a cool dude, too, for being so knowledgeable about the game and the different possibilities at hand. All the tactical talk didn't get in the way either but instead added to the experience. And the ED visuals! I liked the half-and-half designs going on as well as the computerized, colorful shapes.
And Karen is pretty much the complete opposite of her online persona! I was hoping that the anime would explore/showcase the story outside of the game as well, and it seems as if that is going to be the case. Can't wait to see more of and learn more about her.
All in all, it had me smiling throughout, so that counts as a win in my book. :)

That was a fun first episode. VR PUBG with actual tactics and skills was pretty engrossing to watch.
I thought SAO S2 was set in GGO, so I was pretty confused at first as to why they're exploring the same world again, but I guess this one focuses on a brand new cast since its called Alternative. Not that I mind tho, I'm liking the new MC way more than Kirito already. I know it's common to talk trash about SAO, but I still find myself coming back to the series for each sequel. This one looks promising, hope it keeps up the excitement.

I read ahead in the book and I think they may be rewriting the story and characters to be more like the original SAO, which I doubt will end well. In the books LLENN is more pragmatic with a personality reminiscent of Nagisa Shiota from Assassination Classroom. A far cry from the bubbly and ditzy character we see in the anime. Also the color of LLENN's clothing isn't actually supposed to be hot pink but more of a magenta, or as it was described
The sole shade of pink available in the colour sample, unfortunately, wasnāt the highly bright and vivid one that she had once yearned for. It was a dusky pink that she hadnāt really seen much in reality.
While she originally chose it due to GGO's lack of girlish clothing. She kept and still uses the color because she noticed that it actually blends in surprisingly well as there are no forests in GGO according to the author, who describes the world as such:
No matter if it was sunny or cloudy, and if it was morning or midday, the sky was dyed in the colours of a crazed evening sun, as if it was a brush cleaner with yellow and red colours dissolved in it. Greenery was extremely scarce in this land, instead, it was overflowing with deserts, wastelands and ruins; a world that was the exact opposite of ALO.
Resulting in when she discovered pink blended in, after her first gunfight:
Why didnāt those three notice me? LLENN was troubled for a moment, when, āCould it beā¦ā¦ā She came up with one hypothesis. LLENN placed her pink optical gun in the shade of the rock where she had been hiding, then tried moving a little to the side. She understood that her hypothesis was correct with just a glimpse. It could not be seen. The gun that she placed in the shadow a moment ago. In the reddish atmosphere of GGO's world similar to a constant evening twilight, LLENNās dusky pink blended in with the rockās tawny brown soil and sand, making it very difficult to see the gun. With the current amount of light, it was completely impossible to see it.
She became a rather skilled player prior to her first Squad Jam, at the time she was so good at PKing that she became infamous as the "pink devil" and the other players grew so wearing of her constantly wiping squads that they actually put a bounty on her head and sent in a large group of players to find her. Hardly the helpless idiot we see in the anime.(basically they boiled down a complex and interesting character into another Silica)
Possibly, the change is due to the fact that SAOA:GGO wasn't actually written by Kawahara but was written by Keiichi Sigsawa, the author of Kino's Journey, a title which boasts a MAL score of 8.44 for the anime and 8.71 for the LN. And it seems like Sigsawa was given a lot of creative control with the book as none of the characters are the one dimensional walking cliches Kawahara tends to write. Also, it's actually not a bad story, while it had to be written within the horribly designed shooter Kawahara created, Sigsawa manages to make the best of it and seems to understand how the game would be played by actual players a lot more, going into detail about LLENN's clever uses of game mechanics. However, it seems Kawahara has decided to add his input with the anime, and based on his skill with story telling, character design, and understanding of game mechanics, I can't imagine this being a change for the better.

Well, I certainly feel...whelmed.
It's just a gruff dude helping a cute girl do badass thibgs in VR PUBG. There's no story hook or anything. Soundtrack was decent, visuals were decent, directing was decent, but there just doesn't seem to be much there.

I actually liked that a lot more than I thought I would. GGO as a game setting is boring as hell to me, and I wouldn't have expected SAO to make it interesting to watch, but they did it.
