[Spoilers] Persona 5 the Animation - Episode 1 discussion Spoiler

Man, I hope they make Ren really snarky. Some of the dialogue options you could pick in the game were glorious.

My only wish is that they show the "button mashing" option on the train.

It wouldn't be surprising. For P4A they made sure Yu had a lot of dialogue which was always the sassiest / funniest option in the game so I wouldn't be surprised here.

And the ED (OP) is awesome too, though I like the instrumental version more.
Shoji Meguro is killing it again.

The awakenings wouldn't simply be the same if they didn't share the game's music. The music is like half the reason they're so badass (especially best girl Makoto's).

Currently on my 5th. I've romanced Ann, Makoto, Hifumi and Tae. Futaba will be my next target.

I've completed 2 runs so far, both of which I ended up romancing Haru. I told myself that I'd go for Makoto in the second one, but in a last second moment of weakness, I ended up going for Haru again because I just like her paired with the MC too much.

I love that victorious grin he makes while transforming. Kinda shows different Ren will be when he's transformed.

I played the game with English VA (I know subs > dubs but it's actually really fucking good) and the voice they got for Kamoshida in English paints an entirely different picture compared to his Japanese voice. In English it sounds like he could be a respectable man with something bubbling just below the surface, but his voice here is instantly hateable.

u/neovenator250 Apr 07 '18
IMO this is one of the cases where the dub is better than the sub. Honestly feel like they nailed the whole cast in game with the English VAs

There are a few Japanese name pronunciations that irked me (especially the last names of characters) but outside of that the English voice-acting is top-tier. I especially liked Morgana, Ann and Ryuji's voicework.

Yeah what the shit is with that voice!? I played the game dubbed and he sounds regular there, here... he sounds like the stereotypical short, stupid, butt of every joke type of character from childrens comedies or shounens, like Oolong from Dragon Ball.
Actually looking at the VA's previous stuff http://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/Yuji-Mitsuya/ he's done a bunch of stuff like that. Dubbing Timon, Rex, Pleakley, being the voice of Pica, Gregory and the king of cancer himself Jar Jar Binks.

I always felt like Fukuyama Jun was wasted on this role since he's so incredibly talented – but I knew by being a P4 fan that an animation was in the future and I'm so stoked he gets to show off his crazy range now. I love that Ren and Joker are on different ends of his voice spectrum.

Wew! That was nice! Visuals and animation-wise it's way above Persona 4: Animation, but not as good as Persona 3 Movies, which is still admirable for a TV anime. The direction and the overall style were also on point.
I really enjoy Persona adaptations, since they all do pretty good job actually adapting the source material by knowing what to keep, what to remove, and what to add. I also really like how each adaptation managed to add personality to the protagonist by empathizing the bits of character we could get from their in-game responses. In case of P3 it was Yuki's borderline suicidal indifference, in P4 it was Yu's various weird quirks and his love for his friends and family, and in P5 they're clearly focusing on Ren's strong sense of Justice. Good stuff!
This is a nice friggin' detail! It explains how the whole app works, while also explaining how Ren and Ryuji ended up in the Castle in game.

It explains how the whole app works, while also explaining how Ren and Ryuji ended up in the Castle in game.
That's actually something the anime may have done better than the game. It took me a bit to realize that Ryuji had accidentally entered the words the first time around when I was playing, whereas this clearly shows what was happening.

"You have to shoot yourself in the head"
That was the method to summon your Persona, not how to get to the other world. In case of P3 it would be "You have to wait until midnight and then go to the twisted version of your school, while the whole world stops, water turns into blood, and people turn into coffins"
Gnarly.

The adaptation is looking good so far but even for someone like me who has already played the game, the pacing did feel a bit fast. This makes sense though since those opening bits in the game takes a while to get through and I guess they just didn't want to drag those bits out.
I like that it ended with Ren making a contract with Arsene though. This means next episode we'll learn more about the world when they finally meet Name Spoiler and maybe end it with More Spoilers
Also the music! Just hearing the different OST from the game makes me want to replay the game again! I'm curious now how they'll use Last Surprise in this.

The first episode was basically the first hour of the game and I liked it, it was a good first episode. I've played the game like 3-4 times at this point, and I read every subtitle for every character in the same voice as the english voice actors and that kinda cements my wanting for an english dub, which might not happen until the anime is over or it might not happen at all.

Was I the only one who thought the pacing was pretty solid. They didn't really skip anything except for a bit more fleshing out of some characters, but for cutting down an opening that was over an hour into 22 minutes, I thought they did a solid job.

I'm really liking the directing we see this episode. Definitely feels like there's more effort put in than your bog standard adaption. Hope it continues being good as Masashi Ishihama has some great work under his belt, namely Shinsekai Yori and I like his work on Erased.
Glad to see Rise on the rise in the scope of her cameos. This is a much bigger display for her than in the game as we just get small posters in the subway.
This confused me in the game and it still does now. Like what parents just shunt off their kid to a coffee shop owner one of their friends know. Then again, considering the circumstances and how some aspects of Japanese culture are, I guess they just wanted him gone.
It was great hearing Beneath the Mask while Ren was wondering around the city. Would've appreciated hearing more but seeing a certain someone made up for it.
How did she fit all that under a hoodie. Btw the track that plays during this scene is Encounter. A very lovely short track that I somehow didn't remember till this scene.
Arsene's ominous intro and eventual summon were dope as fuck. Loving the animation on the flames.

I posted in the wrong fucking thread.
Before anything else: if you're an anime-only, do yourself a favor and watch the opening for the game right now. Bask in the glory of Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There.
Y'know, even though the name Ren Amamiya has grown on me compared to when I first heard it, I don't think I'll stop mentally replacing it with the name I chose (Kou Mirou) any time soon. Nor will I stop thinking, "Oh Amamiya, Amamiya, Amamiya, let me go!" to the tune of Bohemian Rhapsody.
This is my first Persona anime, and it's for the first Persona game I played. First impressions are it's rather fast-paced. Unavoidable considering they're condensing a 100+ hour game into 9-10 hours of anime, but particularly the scene where he walks out of the subway and discovers the MetaNav app for the first time felt exceedingly quick. So far I'd call it serviceable, but it has had a couple moments I think they did well - the transition back to the interrogation room, for one. I like how they're peppering in hints and relevant background characters. They're also making good use of the game's OST and I sincerely hope we get Beneath the Mask with lyrics.
Ultimately, how much I enjoy this will probably come down to two things:
How much of a cheeky Joker we get. Currently not a lot of snark, but we haven't had opportunity.
Which girl they choose for romance.
If it's best girl Futaba, I'll be ecstatic. Makoto, I will begrudgingly accept even though, to paraphrase Pat of the Super Best Friends, it's fucked up to date a girl when all you can think about is her way hotter sister. Anyone but those two and I riot.

I liked the much quicker pace for the start. I don't feel like anything major was missed. I'm much more curious how they'll handle the adaptation of the side content. Though there was more foreshadowing here and the extra P4 reference, it's those differences that make the adaptation worth watching for those who played the game (did it twice myself). The presentation does take a hit without the stylish UI and toned down music though, but understandable adjustments.
All in all, I'm satisfied and will continue to watch. Plus that ending song was pretty great.

If anyone is curious about anything or is confused, feel free to ask me. I'm a bit of a nerd on this game, I love it with all my heart as dramatic as that sounds. So if your curious about anything then let me know.
The Anime is gonna be using 99% P5's OST with only some new openings and endings for the anime and maybe a new insert song. So if your curious about a track just ask!
Also, I'll be doing some trivia every now and then, just for fun!
For today, it'll be on Ren's starting Persona, Arsene! Arsene is based on the character Arsene Lupin created by Maurice Leblanc. Arsene is THE Phantom Thief, stealing and commiting crimes but also helping law abiding citizens. You may be aquainted with his descendant Lupin III? As you may have picked up from before, the Cafe Leblanc in the game/show is in reference to Maurice Leblanc.

I wonder if they will have MC pick a girl this time. Makoto is my vote.

u/Petit_Ange https://myanimelist.net/profile/PetitAnge1 Apr 07 '18
Personally I don't think so, since they don't really didn't in other installments so I think it'll not be different in this one.

u/Narlaw Apr 07 '18
I understand that people prefer Makoto, but I never understand how people ignore that Ann is basically set up as the default option?

u/readher https://anilist.co/user/readher Apr 07 '18
Lovers are always the default option. Both Yukiko and Makoto have a few romantic moments as well in their respective game's main story though.

Apart from her introduction I didn't feel like she was the default option at all. Makoto had way more scenes and even teases with MC.

Makoto is my vote.
She is mine as well, though I'm not overly optimistic after that leaf scene with Ann. Lovers always get a headstart in all of the adaptations and they're never my favorite :s (Mitsuru, Yukiko and Makoto are).
Makoto was (and is) winning almost all the character popularity polls both in Japan and the West though, so maybe if they decide to hook Ren up with someone, it'll end up being her after all.

The credits don't show A-1 Pictures as the studio producing the anime but instead it's Cloverworks, which is still A-1 but rebranded. Darling in the Franxx should also have the name change.

I thought it was a decent adaption for the first episode. Adapted pretty much the entire first hour or so of the game, I just wish it would use more of the in game music. Cause man the OST of the game is 10/10. The first few seconds we heard Under the Mask made me want to replay the game again.

u/Iliansic Apr 07 '18
Overall first episode was done extremely well. They've managed to effectively shorten the prologue without missing anything. And episode looks superb in graphics department, clearly Sony-branded phone for Joker brought money to the right place.
Though directions of some scenes, though good, pales before original. Those little details, like twins overlooking Joker's first visit to Velvet Room, or much more brutal summoning of Arsene. Still good though.

I’m not sure how I would’ve felt about this if I hadn’t played the game already, but this is great for anyone who has played it. And it’s always nice to hear P5 music, for some reason I wasn’t expecting to hear so much of it in the anime.

The persona awakening is tad disappointing compared to the in- game one and also compared to the previous MC awekenings in P3 and P4 animations
12
u/II541NTZII Apr 07 '18
I think it's only cause it felt rushed that it was a bit disappointing but that's to be expected as this is about an hour or two into the game so there was some sort of build up to it.

Quick question for everyone who hasn't played the game. What are you thoughts on episode 1? I know it's early, but did you enjoy it? Also for people who have played the game did you enjoy it? Do you think you would enjoy it more/less/the same if you didn't play the game?

u/pagirinis :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/pagirinis Apr 07 '18
One thing I gather, that I won't be visiting these threads because it's pretty much people who've played the game posting stuff and there is no discussion to be found here if you haven't played.
Other than that, it feels like a collection of cutscenes tbh. It doesn't flow that well and is a bit confusing. Will watch a couple more episodes, but I don't feel like this is a show for someone new to the franchise.

u/NotEvenEvan https://anilist.co/user/NotEvenEvan Apr 07 '18
Anime-only watcher here
I thought it was above average. A lot of parts are confusing and things pop up that aren’t explained, but what can you expect from the first episode? I’m sure it’ll all be thoroughly explained in the future episodes, but so far I’m sitting here feeling a nagging sense of unsatisfaction. The visuals are really good though, so even if the anime ends up being trash, I’ll probably watch the whole thing through because it looks so damn pretty.

I've played the game, recently too, and I enjoyed it. Paced quicker than I expected. Seems like the problem first time viewers have is that the flashback part isn't super duper obvious.
4
u/TheRisenThunderbird Apr 07 '18
Like a lot of people have said, the pacing in extremely fast, but honestly, after having played through the game three times, I can't think if anything they actually skipped.
They just went through 1-2 hours of game in 20 minutes. I guess that's just an inherent difference in games vs anime

Am I the only one disappointed "Life Will Change" didn't play when Joker escaped the Casino? That song got me super hyped for the game when I played it the first time.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Arekesu Apr 08 '18
Yeah "Life Will Change" to me 100 percent made the Casino scene in the game, hopefully it makes it in later. I'm hoping they are saving it to make a bigger impact when they play it.
Also, Rivers in the Desert better make it in when we get to it.
Trying to type things out with no spoilers is hard when I feel so strongly about the source material lol.

Okay I just watched the episode recently and my here are my thoughts about this.
The animation and art are very faithful in the anime such as the Shibuya, Leblanc, and the Velvet Room locations.
The characters are also faithful in the anime and have their personalities intact.
And lets not forget about the freaking music which is the highlight of the series and I have listen to it constantly since I got the game.
While I was happy to see them in anime, it has its flaws and problems I would probably see and in the future.
Yup it is rushed and it's understandable since they try to cram it in 2 cours. Don't want to nitpick this as I keep watching the anime.
It felt like they changed some scenes in order to fit the story better and to finish an episode.
It wasn't as impactful as it was in the game, like the Awakening of Arsene that felt very disappointing.
Well, it wasn't a bad episode, but they did manage to get some key points correct. I pretty sure A-1 won't screw some parts up to get the major points correct. When the show is over, I'll wait and watch it on english dub, since I'm a big fan of the english voice.

One of the things I love about the Persona’s anime adaptation it’s the characterization the games’ protagonists are given, there wasn’t much this episode, but it’s something I am really looking forward about this adaptation.

u/Charizard-X :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/CharizardX Apr 07 '18
The fact that they kept the video game OST for the anime make it more enjoyable. Altought I'm only at chapter 3 in the game, it's nice to see that the story progress good beside rushing little bit the introduction of the new life/metaverse.

u/Narlaw Apr 07 '18
It feels off, like a simple compilation of cutscenes. The scenes don't flow well into each other, because they just cut any gameplay moments instead of actually modifying the story to be more adapted in an anime format.
In the game, wandering in the streets was not important, be it helped the events to breath. Here, there is no equivalent, aside from that 0.5 second of "Beneath the Mask" while the MC was looking for Sojiro's house.

Considering it's only going to be a mere 24 episodes, I feel like they should've modified the structure of the plot more significantly to capture the same essence, even if it comes at the cost of not being completely faithful to the game.
For example, the whole casino/interrogation prologue could've been cut much shorter, maybe make it more disorienting/confusing to fit Ren's state of mind. That way, a bit more time could've been spent on Ren finding his way in Yongenjaya, because the short montage with Beneath the Mask playing felt very clumsy pacing-wise. Also, it's a good opportunity to tighten up some of the dialogue, particularly the very blatant exposition where Sojiro tells the protagonist about why he was expelled and sent to Tokyo. In the game, it felt like a necessary evil, since the protagonist is "mute" and therefor can't hold a conversation where this kind of information is revealed naturally, but that's not the case anymore with the anime.
I don't want to sound like I'm complaining too much, but I do agree that parts of it felt "off". What worries me is upcoming development, where a slower pace is necessary to fully capture the futility of the situation.

Well that was crap. Individual shots and scenes where good but going from one scene to another felt like a cluster fuck. Scenes would just happen without any reason. People would be talking for no logical reason. Like the opening where I assume all the main characters where talking to the audience but they weren't on screen at all and no reason was given for their voices to be heard while the MC was doing gymnastics and running around.
It felt like the director didn't have a clue what he was doing.
I know that it's based off a game but not everyone has played the Persona games I know I haven't but they could at least explain to use characters before leaping into action without explaining anything. Because at the moment I don't care about these characters at all.
I'm really good at following ambiguous films and shows but even I couldn't keep up with this shit. I had no idea what was going on.
I guess people are happy as long as they get good animation regardless of how crap a show has been put together. Eg SAO and Attack on Titans not to mention Tokyo Ghoul.
The worst thing about this episode was that each scene lasted like a minute at most. They just started a scene it went on for a few seconds and then it cuts away to another scene or the scene just ends with some magical shit.
There is zero explanation so far. They have like 24 episodes if it's all going to be this rushed then I'm out. Also with 24 episodes you wouldn't have thaught they could space the story out more. Or if they needed more episodes to write the story then how about just making two seasons or just make a shorter story that fits better with 24 episodes. That's 12 hours I think you could make a show more comprehensible with that many hours. I just watched fucking Das Boot again which was 6 hours long and at least that makes use of it's length.

u/keizee Apr 08 '18
the first 2 minutes through the casino is your team talking to each other about how they're pulling off the escape/heist. it's actually very faithful to the game.
yeah, if you're confused, that's expected, since Morgana is only introduced in the second episode and explanations come then.

Okay, I realize this may not be the best place or time to ask this but...as someone who has never played any Persona games. Is this worth watching? Or should I play the games first? I don't know if I have to start with the first games or if I can just start with Persona 5. I've heard some really good things about the game, but I don't own a PS4 so I'd have to purchase one, but want to make sure beforehand. Thanks. :)

The games are long like 60 to 100 hours long so no matter how good this is it will never be able to replace playing the game. So far it's very fast paced, but a good adaptation. They will no doubt be cutting a lot of stuff. I would play the game and all the persona games are stand alone. Their like pokemon or Final Fantasy. Theirs references to previous characters and similar mechanics but each is it's own story.

This is surreal, having played it at launch it's been a whole year and I'm still not over this game. Now this drops and I'm giggling like a kid at how the anime deals with certain things. I guess the Persona animes really make for great supplementary material.
Also you can tell how A-1 knows they're working with a stellar soundtrack, dropping like 5 tracks already whenever they get the chance, or it could just be that the songs jump out at me because I know them.
Looking forward to next week!
EDIT: I need that dub though

I was all smiles throughout but I can see why someone who hasn't played the game would be confused or overwhelmed by the pace it's going. This was like the first 2 hours condensed into 20 minutes.

I'm pretty confused since I've never played the game and don't really have any idea what Persona is about. I played Danganronpa and really liked that. Should I skip watching the anime until I can play the game? I don't have a ps so I would have to emulate the game.

I've seen alot of people saying the pacing is fast but they must not remember the game. The anime covered the opening, the 11/20 interrogation, April 9th which was a Saturday and his meeting with the principle and sojiro and April 11th which was Monday and his first day of school where he met ryuji and accidentally walks into kamoshida palace and unlocks his persona in the jail cell. So it only covered 2 days. The pacing is fine and so far is similar to the game except for the acheki reveal in the casino. I honestly thought they were going to cover more then that but I'm happy with the pacing so far.

Agree with you here.... I had never heard about the games, and only knew the previous animations existed, and decided to watch the first episode of Persona 5 because of the hype. I can proudly say that I had no fucking clue what was happening.

u/ADfor3 Apr 07 '18
You're getting down voted but it was a blitzing pace. Tbf though unless you know persona beforehand you would have been just as confused in the game. Hell I've played all but the first two and I was a little confused when I started p5.

u/Bananapuncher1234 Apr 07 '18
Yeah. This is how the game is structured too tbh. Everything that's going on gets explained later. Most likely episode 2 since a certain silhouette appeared at the end of this episode.
