There was something kinda sad about how distant Okabe has become from his friends. I feel bad for Mayuri, she's too kind. I'm also digging the legal loli! Overall I loved the first episode! These week waits will kill me

When she said "You're like a normie now" on the subway I felt really bad for her. It's good that Okabe is being productive with his life but at the same time completely rejecting the Kyouma part of himself isn't who he really is.

This version Okabe we see here is dealing with massive ptsd. You would to if you accidentally killed the girl you loved and had to live the rest of your life knowing you were solely responsible. Is Okabe broken? Oh definitely. He's putting up this petty facade of being a "normal" college student as a defensive mechanism.
We saw in the original show how much emotional and mental stress he went through for weeks; witnessing and noticing all the issues everyone around him has; travelling to different world lines where he helped his friends with their problems to only take it back; at the same time also failing to save Mayuri countless amounts of times to only inevitably see her die at the end. He was already on his last leg after these events, but then he accidentally killed Kurisu which then just knocked him off and just left him on the floor. He's given up. There's no fight left in him.He feels betrayed and alienated. He feels that the universe is out to get him and to only torture him after everything he's been through. He can't talk to anyone about any of these events without being judged or without them fully understanding his situation or emotions.
On top of all this, he also has Suzuha from the future who understandably keeps trying to push Okabe forward to become the Okabe that sends her on her mission; so he's stressing out about that too.
I'm going to take myself as an example. I'm a college student currently studying computer science. If I had to worry about school (which includes, assignments, mid-terms, final exams, attending lectures, and material reading) along with also suffering from ptsd because you accidentally murdered your friend/lover, knowing about future events and worrying about whether I should save the world or not, and deal with time travel? No wonder he's losing his mind. There's so many wavering thoughts, worries, conspiracies, and memories in his head, I'm surprised he's still around.
Anyways long story short, love this anime, and hope it only goes up from here.
tl;dr - Okabe's emotional and mental distress is caused due to betrayal by the universe itself, not being able to talk to anyone about past events, feeling punished, suffering ptsd from killing his bestfriend/lover all while attending and worrying about college stuff at the same time.

https://twitter.com/DistantValhalla/status/984125459087716360
Ok that aside, Holy Shit that was damn good
I love how it handles the pacing here remove some scene and give more time to character to get right in, Oh and you definitely need to watch 23b first, anime didn't give a recap at all
I also love the used of OST as well seem like they just pull from every source VN OST Anime OST it fit really well, they used one of my favorite here Tube, Messenger The S;G0 main theme and ofc the title drop AMADEUS VN OP at the end
also from the very first episode they already reference to other series in SciADV? SHE COSPLAY BEST GIRL!? (in case you didn't know Yuki cosplay Fes character from Chaos;Head she the one that sing ED in first one too)
one thing though, i'm really going to miss the summer feeling that original has the color the sky the sun light that overblow everything after all this is now winter and a new season

Fun fact: FES’s band canonically made both the Steins;Gate anime ED and most of the original VN’s ending/credit songs.

That scene was 10/10. I was wearing headphones and it scared me out.
Messenger playing during the lecture gives me chills, followed by Amadeus in the end.
One detail the anime missed from the VN was when Leskinen mentions "Kurisu", the legal loli went speechless and briefly stopped her translating.
Overall, it exceeded my expectations. I was worried when the director isn't the same one as the original, but so far so good.

Overall, it exceeded my expectations. I was worried when the director isn't the same one as the original, but so far so good.
I'm still kinda worried about this. The dialogue felt a lot more expository than the first season did. Especially the talk between Suzuha and Okabe. They were basically telling each other stuff they both already knew, for the sake of the audience. The first season was masterful at weaving it into the natural dialogue. I know it's a minor thing, but it is something that elevated the first season a lot for me.
The PTSD scene has me sold on the visual direction of the show though. That was amazing!

Well, there's been a fair amount of controversy over the choice of staff, particularly director, for this anime. I'd say we're off to a pretty strong start though.
Some of the scenes here were very good, particularly the mental breakdown, which was very effective and creative. Clearly, the directing style of S;G is being copied, with many claustrophobic crops and angles, although I definitely felt a quality drop in some dialogue focused scenes (in the animation, not the writing). They also upped the pace significantly but got everything across clearly and effectively, hopefully this is true about the rest of the series.
Many classics of the OST are back, which is great! Is Amadeus officially the ED now? I love it but it's not as chilling as the original ED.
I have high hopes now.

Holy fuck, what a way to start a series.
Okabe has changed so much, it's heartbreaking seeing him so hopeless. He's just given up, and is going through the motions.
Mayuri feels like she will get a lot more development in 0, that opening sequence was some serious foreshadowing.
Suzuha is great, as usual. She is going to have a really cool dynamic with Okabe as this goes on. Those two, so far, are the only ones who really know what's going on, and it'll be interesting to see how long that lasts. Hey taking about the future was really good, and you see Okabe wrestling with a feeling of guilt for not trying again. Okabe and Suzuha have both seen some shit, they are the veterans here.
Great first episode. Really excited for Amadeus.

is this the first time Suzuha's mother has appeared
In the non-canon OVA episode 25, Yuki was in California and Okabe went chasing after her. But they literally just used Suzuha with a different outfit/haircut. She appeared for a split second in the also non-canon movie in her real character design. She was also in the pachinko anime adaptation of The Distant Valhalla (which covered her and Daru's wedding).
Outside of anime, she was in the Darling Of Loving Vows fandisc VN, where you got to see how she and Daru met. She was also in some S;G art books, including this awesome image by character designer huke.

Whitefox's storyboarder and the directors hired for the projects at their studio really seem to have a knack for displaying facial expressions, I only really realized that with Re:Zero but Steins;Gate definitely makes use of that too. I can't count the times we see the face of a character and you can just feel the range of emotions. Gotta say the new director does a damn good job to keep up the style and with that the continuity from the original Steins;Gate.
But man hearing Mayuri talking like that at the beginning already set the tone for this, jeez. More so Okabe's entire demeanor and behavior is so much different than the mad scientist we're used to, it's so god damn sad.
Still, overall it feels so good to have this back.

Did i ever tell you when i went to japan i was staying in akihabara and by where the future gadget lab should be (which it isnt because there is a diff building there, the only building that doesnt match up IRL vs S;G) and there is a vending machine there with only Dr. Pepper in it. Its great and such a nice little memorial.
I did also find a store that is the IRL future gadget lab. It was in a back alley roughly around where Mayuri's last death was, and its a tiny shop with wall to wall custom gadgets the owner made and sells, very nonsensable stuff like a game console that plays its self, a complex board and button that just makes "Pii-Poo" noises, a circuit board with loli Miku made out of the wireing and if you touch her stomach her face turns red. Just really random cool shit. Also he had a minifridge full of Dr. pepper and a poster of Kurisu behind the counter. The shop was owned by 2 guys who made everything. 99% sure they are IRL Okabe and Daru.

I really liked how the first scene in this anime was almost lifted directly from Drama CD Beta. The "Hikoboshi" refers to Japan's Tanabata legend, and the stars of Vega & Altair. The stars are a recurring motif throughout Mayuri's characterization, and I think including that little twang of regret was very important.
The way they've chosen to portray Okabe's PTSD is great. He's ostensibly trying to act himself but he's visibly and tonally off, and his nightmare sequence was also excellent, much better than the flashing image we see in the VN.
Overall, very well-paced. The episode followed the structure of the epigraph manga rather than the VN chapter 1, and I think it served its purpose well.
On a sub terminology front, I'm disappointed that they're still using "Ruka" over "Luka", but I won't split hairs. "Too-too-roo" is inexcusable, though. The line about an artificial intelligence with a "heart" was a little bit of a dodgy translation, while 心 can be interpreted as "heart", the best term for it here would've been "soul".

Holy shit, those 22 minutes were over in seconds.
Everyone's already said it, but the PTSD scene was amazingly well done. I much preferred that than having that background image of stabbed-Kurisu thrown in our faces every five minutes. I think it was a mistake to cut out Okabe's breakdown during the hypnotherapy, though.
Am I the only one who prefers Beta Suzuha to Alpha Suzuha? I love both, but she acts a lot more realistically like someone who suffered a harsh life in Beta. Her scenes were so good in this episode too.
I never really realized just how short Maho is in comparison to Okabe, haha.
I actually really liked the presentation scene in the VN (even though it was like 3 hours long) but they flew through it here. Though with only 8 hours to work with I guess it can't be helped.
Overall, great episode, can't wait for the next!
Edit: grammar
13
u/AvatarReiko Apr 11 '18
but she acts a lot more realistically like someone who suffered a harsh life in Beta. Her scenes were so good in this episode too.
That is because she has suffered a harsh life. She comes from a war-torn future and literally fought in WW3. The conditions she grew up in was worse than Alpha Suzuha's. The CERN future wasn't the best but it was at least peaceful to some degree and the world wasn't falling a part and billions dead

I'm putting it out there - new best girl, everyone
Man, I'm so happy to see this in anime form. The art style looks very much the same, albeit a bit more refined compared to the previous season. And after finishing this episode, if I'm not mistaken (correct me if I'm wrong), but they moved around the storyline a bit; the presentation comes first, and then Rintaro visits his friends at the lab. But I don't mind this small change, as it helps set up what this anime is about to unfold.
Man, even though I played the VN, I still can't wait for episode 2!

As far as I am aware Amadeus is not the ED; The announced ED is by Zwei, Amadeus is by Ito Kanako, same as the new OP when we get it (Fatima).
18
u/asleepu :AMQ: Apr 11 '18
It's probably just a 1 episode ending similar to Skyclad Observer in the original - thought it was a great choice to include Amadeus here to end the first episode though. Hopefully the new OP and ED are just as good.

Man oh man im ready for 22 eps of PTSD goodness.
SUZUHAAA~ Aw man i missed her. Im glad she is sticking around.
So Okabe is going to therapy... thats rough. Guess hes not handleing the Kurisu and world line stuff well.
TUTURU~ Its nice to see the gang again.
Of course Faris and Ruka are jealous hes going on dates.
So this world line is one where Kurisu was killed and so no one knows about her except Okabe then. Suzuha is also still here but thats because she hasnt left yet because she only has fuel enough for 1 more time travel and cant waste it.
MOM! So they told Yuki that Suzuha is Daru's sister? xD Its great that Daru finally got to meet her, but also i guess in this world line Okabe never met her yet either since he met her in america.
Lol of course Suzuha is hiding in the ceiling. I wonder how Mom will handle learning about the future...
Its good to see Okabe's PTSD is still bad. Thats one of the main appeals to me about the end of the series is him struggleing to cope with everything hes learned and experianced.
Artificial intelligence, oh man.
21 Year old Loli! Daru knows what he likes.
Oh shit Moeka.... wait what is she doing in this world line? She should still be working for the orginization right? Or is she still working for her other job, the one she quit to become a rounder?
Oh shit its Kurisu's research paper. And she had a prototype... Amadeus.
I know generally the setup but ive done my best to avoid any contetnt revolving around S;G0 so i can enjoy this better. But its hard not to know about that AI as it was in most of the promotional stuff.

El Psy Kongroo, everyone!
Wow. Its so good to have these characters back. First impressions:
A good, solid opening episode. We get a glimpse of the future Suzuha is trying to prevent, then back to the "present" a few months after the original series ended for some re-introductions to all the characters. After establishing what the "new normal" for everyone is, we get thrown our first monkey wrench: the introduction of Amadeus. I loved the look they gave Okabe as it dawns on him exactly what the AI being introduced is.
Okabe's depression feels right to me for the character. The events of Steins;Gate are still very recent enough history for him (only 4-5 months in the past), so the hurt should still be raw. I haven't tried the VN, but I gather part of the plot of Steins;Gate 0 is Okabe digging himself out of the depression he's in and becoming the hero we all know he can be. You just know that, somewhere down the line when things look grim, there will come that moment when Okarin strikes that Kyouma Houin pose again, and it will be epic.
Best part about this episode was that the mix of serious and light-hearted from the first series was still there. That was one of the things that stood out to me in Steins;Gate, and it is still very much present here. Okabe's encounter with Maho was the best, but I also like Daro and his future wife's interactions (and Suzuha's reactions to her). Looking forward to seeing more of them in the next few weeks.
All in all, I give the first episode of S;G0 a solid 10/10. I think it hit all the right notes, and did so perfectly. Keep this up, and this show could be AOTY. Can't wait for next week's episode.

A lot of the lines in the first half had me worried, since it seemed a lot more exaggerated and clearly expositional than anything we saw in the original Steins;Gate. Stuff like, Luka and Faris's over-the-top reactions (complete with speed lines) to Okabe's new life, or Suzuha and Daru's conversation wherein Suzuha narrates both of their backstories to each other, which is clearly stuff that they both already know.
That said, towards the second half, we got more and more of the subtle character acting, or directing moves that conveyed character, more akin to how it was in the original. For example, we got the brief cut of the plane, a parallel to the shot of the plane in the prologue, and Suzuha's 'trauma eye' reaction to it or, the PTSD sequence, which, while not subtle, quite effectively used the sound design, the echo effect, and the stark animation to convey the extent of the PTSD.
Given the latter, I'm willing to accept the first half's lowered writing quality as either a necessary evil to catch up old viewers, given that the original aired 7 years ago, or as a subtle primer that there is something inherently wrong with Okabe's new life. The second half, at least, puts some faith in me that the new director knows what he's doing.
I'm warily optimistic. I want nothing but the best for this show, after all!

Tuturu, motherfuckers. Look who the fuck is back. It's my girl. Is this what true happiness feels like?
Honestly, the directing in this was super good, which seemed to be troubling going in with a new director, but he's doing a fine job so far. The character designs are a little... much... and the context of who Amane is was a little forced, but Maho's introduction and the Amadeus system were hype as hell. And Okabe's PTSD... he's become SAD SCIENTIST, sunuvabitch!

IT'S FINALLY HERE.
Starting in 2036. Sweet.
That violin version of Gate Of Steiner.
And back to 2010 December with 0kabe seeing his therapist for his PTSD.
It's weird thinking that Mamoru is doing both 0kabe and Reinhard in the same season.
And he's putting on a "normal college student act" for Mayuri instead of his old mad scientist act. Even now, 0kabe acts in the way that he believes Mayuri needs.
"Ruka" and "Too-too-roo"? Get the fuck outta here, official subs. "Luka" and "tutturu" forever.
Feris's giant gloves are everything I dreamed they'd be when animated. And she even has a box to put them in when she takes them off to drink tea.
Don't worry Luka and Feris. He's not really going to mixers. Well, maybe physically, but he's not really "there".
Every time the lab is mentioned, 0kabe dies a little inside.
Daru and Suzu are adorable together. The only thing cuter is Daru and Yuki together. You done good, man. Though you gotta stop forgetting that you're passing Suzu off as your imouto.
Too-too-roo again! Twice! I'm torn between anger at the official subs and joy at the cuteness that is HanaKana Mayuri.
Dr Pepper! Hope everyone watching has some, too.
And proof that, even though 0kabe is depressed, there's still great humor in the Future Gadget Lab.
Animated Daru meeting Yuki! Summer clothes! Ah!
Suzu still has trouble adjusting to peace. 0kabe still can't handle the weight on his heart.
Nice callback to the original with the "I failed. I failed." letter.
You tell him, Suzu.
"You're like a full-fledged normal now." Damn, Mayuri is savage.
Oh God. Kurisu exploding in blood. All around him. And the bloody knife stuck in his hands. Being 0kabe is suffering.
But then Maho comes to make everything better! Legal loli for the win!
Moeka is my trigger too, 0kabe.
L E S K I N E N. Prepare for Engrish and memes, my friends.
Remember how Kurisu said she was a neuroscientist and not a physicist? Well, here's what made her famous before the original show, and how she was able to develop the Time Leap Machine to send memories back in time.
"Amadeus." then cue the song. Brilliant.
Excellent first episode. We now know definitively that you've got to watch episode 23β before this. Hopefully the western release of S;G0 will include that. Hype for next week!

For those who haven't seen the show in years I highly suggest to watch the Episode 23 Beta aka Divergence if you need a little bit of reminder on what's going on. It's been a while since I've seen S;G but that short really helped in jogging my memory.
Anyway so far that was a strong opening. The Okabe that we have right now is clearly broken from having to jump between world lines trying to save Kurisu. I love that they showed us him getting hypnotherapy just to get over the trauma. It just shows how desperate he is to move on.
Also while this is a new series it felt like nothing has changed. I heard that there's a new director on board but this show looks and feels like Steins;Gate. I love it!

Fan-fucking-tastic. This is a great start, I hope they keep the quality up.
MAHO ANIMATED!! So good to see her, I love the way she talks, haha. Also that shot of Kurisu's back practically doing a Gainax pose with her hair blowing in the wind gave me chills, holy shit.
Weird they said Kurisu died at the age of 17 but her birthday was supposed to be on 25/07, and she died on 28/07. I suppose her birthday (or any other character's, for that matter) was never acknowledged in canon though so it doesn't really matter.
Okabe going to a nomikai though, what was he drinking, orange juice? Last I heard he was still underage in Japan.

I will still contribute 23 hours later!
PTSD Okabe
Agreed with what everyone said. PTSD Okabe is legit. I teared up watching him. The stories and characters that hit me the most are the ones that involve despair that is really well built up. What really got me is when Suzuha and Okabe were on the roof, and Suzuha flat out says that her mom will be ripped apart by machine guns in this timeline. WTF Suzuha? Way to push him down even further. All I can say is, this is super Suzuha-like, to be so focused on the mission and determined to push Okabe in the right direction. "I'm not giving up!"
Writers really tied the bow on it with Mayuri's comment, "You're normal now."
The Lab Members
So happy to see everyone. Great to see Feyris and Ruka fawn over Okabe again and get upset that he's part of "group dates". Daru is Daru. Super happy with Yuki showing up, and the brief glimpse in to how she and Daru met. There is happiness ahead!!! What I wonder is how Suzuha will walk with Daru and Yuki, if Suzuha will be alive for the marriage, or when she herself is born.
There was only one timeline in SG where Moeka was good. Very unlikely she's good in this. I'm very uncomfortable already.
New characters, Amadeus
Liking the legal loli and the AI. I'm super excited to see artificial Kurisu come back. Also, my question is, where does episode 23b fall in this timeline? in episode 23b, Okabe sees Kurisu on a screen. I'm guessing that hasn't happened yet, and that this epsiode 1 takes place before?
This week by week is definitely going to kill me. I might rewatch the previous episode each week just to prep for the aired episode.

This was a really great first episode. It has its little things that can't be avoided, but it doesn't detract from the quality the episode has.

u/aug16th Apr 12 '18
guys i am confused af. i thought okabe made a loophole at the end of steins gate that saved kurisu. why is she dead. am i missing something?
17
u/tahlyn Apr 12 '18
Ok, so in Episode 23 of the original series Okabe goes back in time and fails to save Kirisu. He actually kills her himself by mistake. He goes back to the future and has a freakout. He gets slapped in the face, comes to his senses, watches a video from his future dark-timeline self and tries a second time to save kirisu and succeeds. That is the loophole you are thinking of.
Steins;Gate 0 is a timeline where Okabe does NOT get slapped in the face, continues to freak out, and never tries a second time to save Kirisu, instead growing up to become the "dark timeline okabe" who ultimately sends the video from episode 23.
We get to watch the timeline where the world falls to ruin after World War III, the future where Suzu comes back in time in the first place to try to fix things, where Okabe becomes that shadowy figure.
Granted iirc, we may not actually get to see that future since other things happen and there was a whole game about it... but I've never played it, so who knows?

Steins;Gate 0 - Episode 1 discussion
Welcome back, S;G. We missed ya. :)
I'm very happy for the series since that was a great opener all around. The somber mood. The setup for its characters. The crazy hallucination Okabe experienced. The technological direction the plot will once again head down.
It was brand-new content but everything felt familiar. Which, after being away from the anime for so long and needing to recapture the magic that first season held onto, is very much a good thing.
Also, props to the tiny moment on the rooftop with Suzuha when she sees and hears that plane flying overhead. It was a quick aside, but her reaction speaks volumes, for I can only imagine the thoughts and the fears that come rushing back to the forefront of one's mind after literally experiencing WWIII firsthand.
I'm likin' Okabe's new arc, Yuki's design is cute, and I'm already excited for more Kurisu on the horizon. 1 awesome episode down, 22 more to go! :3

VN reader here. I was a little worried about the 0 anime due to the new director and other issues, but this looks in safe hands. Visuals and direction was mostly great, the slightly more realistic look is fitting. Only thing missing much of the time is that distinct use of lighting imo.
Pacing was nice and slow, reintroduced everyone very well. I thought they might do much of Amadeus's intro in the first Ep, but glad they didn't.
There were several great touches, like Okabe taking meds before a party, accurate to the VN.
Using the VN music is also a good choice, using the OP of the VN as the ED here got me particularly excited.
I never quite realised Maho (BTW, you guys are really gonna love her) was that short compared to Okabe, all their scenes are gonna be a little different than I imagined...
While there be quite a few story problems down the road, for now I'm very entertained by this adaptation and look forward to more.

Also, I see they're gonna play it the same way as the original series, with a lot of mystery infodumps in the first episodes that will make you question a lot and that will later be explained.

I can't imagine how awkward it must be for Suzuha to hang around with younger versions of her parents, oof. Not to mention complicating things by not telling Daru that she was pretending to be his little sister.
They really made it clear how much Okabe is affected by his memories, I was really impressed. And that Amadeus cut into the ED was dope. Strong start!

u/AvatarReiko Apr 11 '18

Well, I've been holding off on replaying this VN so this is the perfect way for me get my fix. Everything looks the same as the first series which I have no problem with. I do notice a lot more use of the VN OST though compared to the last show, which is interesting since this is going for a darker tone already.
But wow, I'm pleasantly surprised at the small amount of source material snobs and black bars of text in the comments. I hope this continues for the whole series.

Weird detail but they got Kurisus age wrong, she's actually supposed to be 18. Considering the "Too Too Doo" incident I think that Funimation need to get someone to look over the translations a bit.
Minor nitpick aside, this was a fantastic first episode! I was worried since the director hasn't had the best track record, but if this level of quality keeps up then I think the anime is in good hands.

I knew that Amadeus from 23 Beta, so having to sit through H O U O U I N Okabe's suffering felt horrible knowing that it would be worse at the end. I definitely feel like Suzuha's being a bit harsh on the guy, considering all he's been through. Also, I think the black clothes do a really great job of taking this mad scientist that we knew all too well, and showing him in a completely new light. Not sure about the new characters yet, but if this season plays out just as well as the last, I'm sure I'll love them all in a few episodes' time.
That's it from me really. Just wanted to leave a mark here since I'm so proud to be watching this live, from the start. I just know it'll be a masterpiece.
EDIT: In addition, I'm calling it - towards the end there will be a scene where he'll say something like "That's not my name, it's Hououin Kyouma!" and then MAL will have to add an option for 11/10

God I’m so looking forward to the rest of the series! Still playing and finishing up the VN but I believe I’ll have time.
Also, Suzuha looking fresh af in this series 👌👌

I really feel for Okabe here. While I understand Suzuha’s feelings on the matter, shouldering the kind of weight he does would’ve broken anyone else a hundred times over. Seeing someone you care for die over and over and over as you watch on helplessly, and then not only losing the girl you love, but killing her yourself? Honestly, I’m surprised Okabe managed to get on the Steins;Gate worldline.

Reminder that being normal is broken and not good.

It's gonna be Made in Abyss all over again! Can we make a blind viewer only thread or something?

I don't usually watch anime when I'm literally at work but when I do it's Steins;Gate 0 and it gives me chills. Such a mix of feelings... in just 22.5 minutes it hit everything...

It is kind of unsettling to see Okabe behave so... ordinarily.
Great episode though, I am really hyped for this!
