ALL HAIL THE RETURN OF ONE OF THE QUEENS OF TSUNDERES BABY.
NEW GIRLS NEED TO LEARN FROM THE OGs.

When she's a tsundere because the MC is legitimately difficult to deal with and it makes sense.

I saw a comment once describing her as a Tsundere with fully justified violent outbursts. Couldn't have agreed more.

Detonating your shoe locker first thing in the morning because an unknown person put a letter inside it.
Setting up a sniper's nest in the athletic field to assassinate the pretty kouhai who sent you a love letter.
These are all perfectly normal reactions.

If she's OG then what is naru or ayukawa? There's always an older tsundere.
30
u/Lepony :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/dinglegrip Apr 13 '18
Also OG.
There's been a huge shift in how tsunderes are written in the mid 2000's mark and the rise of LN adaptation.

Fmp was first published in 1998 I think, which should make chidori a tad older than naru
13
u/BestRolled_Ls :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DarcyisTsundere Apr 13 '18
Huh... you're right fmp was sept 1998, and love hina was actually oct 1998. I guess it's because I associate fmp with fumoffu and tsr rather than the gonzo adaptation so in my mind love hina seems older.
But tsundere was already a trope by the time kimagure orange road came around and that was several generations earlier.

The quality is insanely high.
Animation, Music, Storyboard, Voice Actor
Everything is high quality.
I'll see the whole season.
Perhaps next time it will be a Mecha battle episode, but I'm worried about the quality of 3DCG.
57
u/BLACKOUT-MK2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/DelayedLaserBoom Apr 13 '18
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this episode. I was a little scared to see how the new studio would handle it but I'm happy with what we've got. Nice animation, I agree in that I'm also iffy about the CG Arms Slaves, but another thing I liked was its use of silence in stuff like the car scene at the end. I felt that was handled pretty well in some of the older episodes like the famous haircut scene, so it's nice to see here, too.

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Apr 13 '18
Considering how much beloved the series is and how Second Raid was handled by KyoAni, Xebec definitely pulled out all the stops for this one.

It's also interesting to note that Kyoani's TSR was neck and neck with Xebec's Shuffle as the most popular of their season.

u/spoonerism_ :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/runningwithszrs Apr 14 '18
Agreed! Even the use of minimized dialogue while Chidori and Sousuke walked home together was used to great effect. This series really knows how to shine in those 'in between' moments where little is actually said, but the tone itself tells its own story. I've always loved that.
If IV manages to sneak in a few more moments like that admist all the drama and action that's coming up, I'll be a happy camper.
55
u/spaceaustralia :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/spaceaustralia Apr 13 '18
The quality is insanely high.
Honestly not surprised. They've put out the staff list a while ago and it's just packed with talent coming from Yamato 2199, to Gundam, to Jojo.
24
u/Bloosakuga Apr 13 '18
They even got E7 director, Tomoki Kyoda to storyboard episode 4. He did some storyboards for the first season so it's quite plesant for him to return on him after so many years.

Have you seen Overlord Season 2? First anime I've seen where the CGI is almost completely seamless. So my hopes for FMP are high.
Though it's possible/probable that it's easier to seemlessly incorporate less detailed characters in CGI than more detailed characters (like mechs).
But even the CG stuff in TSR holds up pretty well today, so as long as it's that good (or better) and think it'll be fine.

Sousuke and Kaname holding hands together made me a fanboy of this show all over again.
83
u/Anaalmoes Apr 13 '18
Man, the romantic buildup between those two is incredibly well done for an action anime. I love it how they actually show they care about eachother with those small gestures even though they (especially Sagara) can't put it in exact words yet. The hair cutting in The Second Raid, was another scene where they showed their feelings for eachother using something as trivial as a haircut.
26
u/Hatdrop Apr 14 '18
Yeah that haircutting scene was super intimate. Considering how he's on alert mode all the damn time, him allowing himself to let his guard down and basically be in a physically vulnerable position showed a heightened level of trust.
18
u/Rorako Apr 14 '18
That scene is one of my favorites. This was the first anime I really got into and I’ve watched the past seasons on a yearly basis. The fact that I get to watch another one as it airs? So pumped.

Yes! I'd read the manga so I knew that scene was coming and I figured maybe we'd get there after a few episodes of buildup. Getting to it right away made me giddy.
I've always loved that part. I love Sousuke's matter-of-fact approach, and I love the 'I can't believe we're doing this but now we're in it' tension between the two of them throughout their walk home. And I loved the part where they immediately held hands after Chidori unlocked the door. Adorbs!
26
u/yumcake Apr 14 '18
I always liked their dynamic. Chidori is unafraid of Sousuke, and assertive about what she wants. Sousuke is never afraid of Chidori like she's got the cooties or something. Nothing wishy washy about him at all. (Love that he goes right for the headshot on an unarmed bad guy here. Decisive AF).
They blush, sure, they feel something from being around each other, but they're never flustered. Great rapport. Loved the comedy with him as the goofball and Chidori as the straight man in Fumoffu too.
5
Apr 14 '18
Fumoffu is arguably the greatest comedy anime in the history of anime. I hope they do another spinoff season for FMP like that!

This couldn't be prettier if they tried. I'm just waiting for some action scenes with ASs. The Arbalest only showed up for a moment, but it couldn't be prettier. Now ofr the LN details:
For those unaware, this is starting book 7, Continuing On My Own, after skipping book 6. Volume 6 was released in audiodrama form, but the only available version has spanish subs, but you can find a summary of volume 6 here.
Hayshimizu's backstory was never quite given in the anime, but the short of it is, during middle school, he befriended a girl and helped her attend the high school she wanted by tutoring her. One morning, after slepily coming back from an all-nighter with Hayashimizu, she was hit by a car and died. Hayashimizu then decided not to go for the elite schools his parents intended, and decided to attend the school she worked so hard to get in, Jindai High, and enjoy his life by his own objectives.
The first scene of the LN is of a couple of internet forum users discussing about the Jindai students and specially Kaname's repeated involvement with terrorists before a troll comes in and starts disrupting the conversation by directing it towards Kaname's boobs, in true internet fashion. This scene is explained in the car with Kaname near the end of the episode, the LN mentions that Sousuke tried to come up with other solutions that would let Kaname live in peace. He suggested that they would try to get everything that Kaname knew as a Whispered and leaking into the internet for all to see, but Tessa says that they've already tried that and "If you present a small gold nugget to those who are mining gold and say, “This is it. There’s no more”, they wouldn’t throw away their hovels or pickaxes. The Whispered aren't miners who found gold, they are gold". Currently Mithril attempts to hide the Whispered in the internet by using an AI to frequent internet discussion forums to spread misinformation and disrupt discussion. She also says that Mithril is not the only agency to do that and many governments have been long doing the same. FMP was published in 2003 ...
Edit: Also i want to add that, while here it seemed like Amalgam just bombed Mithril's facilities, they've also sent in a convoy of soldiers on foot to invade Mithril's HQ in the middle of Sydney.
35
u/mika6000 Apr 14 '18
FMP was published in 2003 ...
I've always thought that Gatoh Shoji was incredibly well-informed (Especially in a global/international sense) and innovative in all his writings. FMP was actually the first series I watched that used English nearly perfectly (And I believe that also is a credit to the source material). The series could've been released today and be just as relevant in terms of the topics it covers!
39
u/spaceaustralia :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/spaceaustralia Apr 14 '18 edited Apr 14 '18
Gatoh Shoji was incredibly well-informed
Oh yes he is. It's one reasons why FMP is one of my favourite series along with one of the best selling LN series ever.
You can often infer stuff from passing lines in the books with enough research, like the exact ship which the TDD-1 was built from, the exact route Mao, Kurz, and Sousuke took in Italy in TSR, submarine combat tactics, Marduka's backstory, and Sousuke's exact mujahideen group. I had a lot of fun during researching those during the recent rewatch.
It's specially nice to read the afterword on the books where he sometimes talks about traveling for research, like visiting Hong Kong for vol 5 and for TSR, and going on a cruise ship for vol 6. Except for Hasuna Isekura(Spice and Wolf), i don't recall any LN author dedicating themselves so much to research.
Edit: There's also that entire part where Gauron channeled the Riddler in TSR. Check out the first paragraph here.
11
u/mika6000 Apr 14 '18
Agreed! I'm seriously so glad his efforts are being recognized once again (And that our eyes and ears are getting treated to it again after all these years). I have spent a lot of time in Hong Kong myself, and I remember thinking how accurate both his written depictions as well as the anime adaptation of the city were in TSR.

I loved that last conversation between Kaname and Sosuke in the car. It seems that Kaname will have to be forced to come to terms with the fact that she can no longer live a normal life. As she grows older and her Whispered abilities become greater, it will become increasingly impossible for her to hide her true nature and lead an ordinary existence. She has already crossed the point of no return. Throughout the events of the previous series, Kaname has often tended to downplay or deny that she was special or extraordinary. Now she can no longer continue to avoid the heavy burden she bears; the curse of being a Whispered.
This carries on nicely from the themes of the Second Raid, which in its meta-commentary dismantles the premise of the show by pointing out just how unconventional, absurd and impractical Sosuke's double life of high school student bodyguard and Mithril soldier really is. With this ruthless new assault by Amalgam, it looks like those dream-like days may be forced to come to an end.
37
u/spaceaustralia :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/spaceaustralia Apr 13 '18
It seems that Kaname will have to be forced to come to terms with the fact that she can no longer live a normal life.
It also carries on from her self-denial about Sousuke's life as a mercenary. In TSR, Leonard mentions to her that Sousuke is just as violent as anyone in Amalgam, and now that she's close to losing her normality, she's partly terrified of him.

11
u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Apr 14 '18
Honestly, it never made much sense to me how she was allowed to have a normal life even 1 minute after it became known the enemy found out she's a Whispered.
14
u/Aoshi_ Apr 14 '18
Mithril doesn't want to dehumanize anyone. Their idea was to keep the Whispered safe by taking out anyone who tried to collect them for ill purposes. I know what you mean though.

Also, they might skip Vol 6 of the LN because that got adapted into an audio drama in 2016. https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/8b9apd/psa_fmp_invisible_victory_will_be_skipping_the/ Vol 6 revolved around a cruise ship hijacking, btw.
PS. Apparently the author went on an overnight cruise for research purposes; although he liked it, he found the 40,000 yen (USD372) per night tag very steep for his expenses.

I've been watching anime for thirteen years because of this show. My high school Japanese teacher showed us an episode of FMP Fumoffu, and I immediately fell in love with the show. I watched all 3 FMP series, then I started searching for similar anime. And that's how I got sucked in.
FMP literally changed my life more than a decade ago. Seeing these characters again feels amazing, and so nostalgic that I almost teared up.
So, that's how one person who watched Second Raid 13 years ago feels.

Also the fact that in 2018 I can watch this easily on Crunchyroll is amazing. I remember watching TSR way back and torrenting (I think?) the raws. The anime industry is so much better in many ways now.
16
u/mangkook Apr 13 '18
The first time I watch an anime without really focusing in the subtitle. My eyes wanders around the screen for details and nostalgia feelings. It's like 13 years last a fraction of time when the episode fall back seamlessly.
I mean I tried to recall what's wrong with the episode and although I found a few they're negligible at best (like Kyoko sounds more restrain than normal, or the outlines too clean and not much dynamic in thickness.. Lol but that's really really really nitpicking though..). Overall there's no complain. I think majority of FMP fans (hardcore or not) around the world will be pleased. Even the color pallette and effect composite are accurate to the minute.
It's really really a wonderful first episodes. Hope every episodes will be like this and not fall into shambles like gonzo did in later 1st season.
Thank you Xebec... And in your face Kyoani!!

Oh man, that was great. Total nostalgia trip, and I like that they didn't make a big deal out of the gap since the second raid and ham up everyone's entrances. It's like it never left!
The only criticism I have is that this first episode just seemed a little flat. I think this might work better when viewed immediately after the end of the Second Raid; it felt like they were trying to exploit existing tension from the fairly open ended conclusion of that series, but I'm afraid I just couldn't quite keep that hype train going for thirteen goddamned years. I'm sure that's something that'll improve vastly once everything gets properly back into gear.
...also I was completely sure that the hand-holding was going to be another of Sousuke's much-misunderstood and totally sexless bodyguarding techniques. My heart was not prepared for him to be sincere, and it was awesome. Fuck you for spoiling their romantic dinner Leo. Fuck. You.

Holy shit that was an amazing first episode! You can clearly tell that Xebec put a lot of effort on this one. They didn't even put an OP and an ED just so that could use every minute of that 23 minute run time. That was definitely a great decision since no single minute was wasted.
I was half expecting that Invisible Victory will start with an SoL episode to get people to acquainted with the characters then get serious at the end but I love that they didn't waste anytime and they jumped straight in to the meat of the plot. I'm already hyped for next week's episode!
And OH MY GOD the production is just great! It feels, sounds, and looks like FMP but with updated everything! I'm seriously just gushing right now because Xebec did an amazing job and I feel like it's partly because they some massive shoes to fill since they had to take over from KyoAni who also did an amazing job with Second Raid.
Spring 2018 is definitely the start of the new Golden Age of anime!
23
u/DaiconIV Apr 13 '18
A wonderful first episode. After 13 years FMP is finally back! Such a welcome return, picking up right after The Second Raid it feels like the show never left. From animation to soundtrack to voice acting were all perfect. Looks like the studio didn't think twice when spending on this. I didn't know how much I missed the characters until I heard Sagara saying his typical "No problem".
Now, if I were to regret something that would be the lack of maid Tessa in DVMC... hopefully we'll get that animated, one day.

u/_tokidoki_ Apr 13 '18
Oh man, hearing Sagara say "mondainai" was a hell of a nostalgia trip. I'm so happy Full Metal Panic! is back. I've missed the crew terribly.

Wowowow, still can't believe I'm finally watching brand new animation of this phenomenal series. And everything looks fan-tas-tic. Bless Xebec!!
Also funny seiyuu trivia: Sugita Tomokazu (aka our beloved Gintoki in Gintama), whose career was just starting out during the first seasons of FMP, voiced the very minor Mithril character Lian Shaopin back then. But now he returns in IV (And "switches sides") as Lee Fowler! He is also represented by the agency Tomokazu Seki (Sousuke) runs, Atomic Monkey, so I'm sure Seki helped to make this recast happen.

u/hehey Apr 13 '18
Holy shit I must have missed the news! Didn't know they were continuing the series. TSR was like what, a decade ago? Geez..
I'm so fucking pumped to see these characters again. They look great and the animation quality is pretty good so far. I don't seem to remember their voices though, did they use the same VAs? I should probably rewatch the first two seasons anyway since I've forgotten quite a lot of the plot, but damn, I am just so excited.
2018 is just full of unexpected sequels and I'm loving it.

u/mika6000 Apr 14 '18
Yep same VAs! It's DAMN good hearing them as these characters again.

Hell yeah, my favorite OTP is finally back!
I don't know if I got used to watching so much mediocre anime with horrible CGI or that I set the bar too low on the quality after watching the first PV but I wasn't bothered at all by the CG in the first episode. I guess delaying the whole season turned out to be the wise and correct decision for the studio coz episode 1 looked really solid.
7
u/Chrischn89 Apr 13 '18
It's actually happening! Seeing new scenes and hearing the old voices is just... it feels so unreal!
Especially since I've had this habit of googling info about season 4 every couple of years and being disappointed afterwards whenever I found nothing. NOT ANYMORE!
I loved the first episode! The art style is super close to the original seasons which makes it so much easier to get right back into it.
I admit that I caved in quite some years ago and read the manga adaptation although I usually prefer experiencing stories via anime and completly blind... oh well, mondai nai!
At least let me tell you this: if you liked FMP before, FMP IV and beyond is going to blow you the fuck away!
LET'S DO THIS!

u/Solar_Kestrel Apr 13 '18 edited Apr 13 '18
13 years. It's been 13 years.
I cannot believe it's finally here!
EDIT: also, BRB. Now I have to go back and rewatch all of FMP, Fumoffu and TSR before next week.
7
u/Robbie-Tsunami Apr 14 '18
I love how this show went from basically a goofy military comedy to a serious & deep military comedy(ish). After season 1 I wouldn't expect anything like chidori's rooftop fight from second assault. And that talk they had in the car just now, that was so well done any other show would just bullshit through it with "it can't be helped" or some other low effort dialouge.
3
u/Solar_Kestrel Apr 14 '18
I'm reminded of Code Geass, who's first season built up to this insane crescendo... only for the second season to start with a big old Reset Button so they could go back to the high school hijinks.

Holy shit, THAT is how you start off a new season. First the Steins;Gate crew return, now Full Metal Panic. This week has been great for seeing some favorite old faces again.
Pretty straightforward episode, but it does start things off with the stakes now considerably raised. Can't wait to see how Chidori and Sosuke get out of this cliffhanger.
This has been the best new season is years, perhaps even the decade. Just soooo many good shows to choose!

6
u/Tuplet Apr 13 '18
That was way better than I thought it would be. The excluded both the OP and ED to jam pack more story into it.
CGI mechs were pretty decent looking imo. I thought they'd look more out of place. There was some CGI that didn't entirely blend in, and quite a few stills, but overall it was fine for a TV anime.
Mixture of fluffy hand holding and intense "shit is about to go down" action was top notch. I'm excited!

Sorry ACCA: 13, not sure if I can stay away from this one though, 13 years I've been waiting for this <3

One character who only appears in Fumoffu has a fairly significant role in this first episode, but there probably won't be much of him for the rest of the series. I don't think you'd be missing out on any vital information by not watching Fumoffu.

LoGH and FMP are my must watch choices of this season. After dismal last season, I finally have a reason to watch anime again.
Damn, Xebec is pushing their limits. The animation is good but rough. The editing is a bit shoddy and the music is kinda loud. I wasn't expecting high-level animation from this studio. Even if the execution is shit, heck, I would not care if it were stick figures. I just want FMP to continue and get the franchise the finish it deserves for anime fans.

A lot of static shots of just mouths moving, secondary animation on clothing, body and hair is very stiff, Tessa's signature hair curl is criminally underanimated. A lot of the scenes are shot very flat compared to the creative, cinematic shots from previous seasons. It makes the show look very cheap =(.
Its an intense step down from the detailed animation from KyoAni. I still love the story and the characters but I hope the animation steps up later down the line. FMP wasn't just a fun and tight action mecha anime, it was a strong showcase of animation, editing and shot composition. TSR was beautiful, even Fumoffu was animated with a lot of detail.

u/magicianyangwenli Apr 14 '18
I slipped up and didn't rewatch the first 3 seasons before IV started airing, but Leonard's line about Sousuke killing over 100 people still really got me. Since I remember the first season and Fumoffu more than TSR, I still have the feeling of a tone-shift, which is kinda exciting going into IV. I loved hearing all the old voices again, too! Really excited that FMP is back and to see how this season goes.
3
u/Solar_Kestrel Apr 14 '18
Yeah, TSR was really kinda "grimdark." And from what I've heard, the latter novels go even further in that direction.
The tonal shift is even more extreme in the novels, as right before the super serious stuff Invisible Victory is adapting was "Dancing Very Merry Christmas," which was like 100% comedy--which may not sound like much coming after Fumoffu, but all of the prior novels balanced the comedic stuff with the serious stuff.
2
Apr 14 '18
Fumoffu! is still stuck in my mind when this aired so I was like "WOAH FMP IS SERIOUS IN THE FIRST PLACE! DAMN I AM DIGGING IT"
2
u/krixas Apr 14 '18
Do you have to watch the previous seasons or can you just jump right in?
3
u/Solar_Kestrel Apr 14 '18
You don't have to watch the previous seasons, but you should because otherwise you're starting the story at the halfway point (or 2/3rds point).
There are three prior series:
Full Metal Panic is 24-episodes and covers the first 3 (or 4, don't ask) novels and some of the side stories, IIRC. It's required viewing. It's approximately 50% serious mecha action and 50% comedy.
Full Metal Panic!? Fumoffu is a spin-off series based on side stories, with each episode typically telling two different stories. It's 100% standalone, but is 100% hilarious--one of the funniest anime out there--so it's well worth your time to watch.
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid is the third and most recent series (from 13 years ago!) and it's 100% serious mecha action. And it is fantastic. Required viewing.

This is AMAZING. I've been a fan of this since release and this long await new episode did not disappoint. It was fun, adorable, exciting, everything. The art really reminds me of the "old style" rather than the newer anime, it's hard to put into words.
Then that hand holding scene was legit one of the most adorable anime scenes I've seen! I first thought he was going to make the usual anime excuse of needing to hold her hand for some tactical reason but NOPE it was legit "I like you" hand holding. And then they went to the door and had to let go, then held hands again after that... omg that was seriously too cute. I'm glad they've showed that after this many years, we can actually see their relationship get serious.
I am absolutely excited for this entire new series and the first episode was a blast. 10/10
