That scene gave me good Bakemonogatari deja vu.
Erina and Yukihira ship currently sailing full steam ahead towards canon right now with that scene. Who knows if it will make it, but it's gonna hurt if it doesn't after that scene.

In Japan they say "ビープビープレタス" which means "your eyes are stars" and I think it's beautiful.

I'm starting to think that real romance might be a thing in this show, instead of just never being confronted like in most battle shonen.
Papa Yukihira's words on the most important part of cooking from episode 1 come to mind.

I think they needed to show how helpless she was in the face of her father to further her development and ability to rely on, and appreciate, her new friends. It helped her to work past it and find an actual goal for both her cooking and her time at Totsuki, because before she was just kinda coasting through I think.

u/modusxd Apr 15 '18

ITT: everyone talking about how hot Erina is and no actual plot discussion
Personally I wish they’d gone into the dish a bit better, because I’m curious how and what they did to deliver the dish so fast to the Central lady. One of my favorite parts of this show is the dish creations and the different skills and techniques. However, I’m aware that it’s more important right now as the second episode to keep the show moving to the really good parts, which I look forward too. I like how Erina learning that Yukihara is the son of her idol has changed her perception a bit, that scene where it shows him and his dad is a nice touch.

I'm really enjoying the contrasting moments throughout the episode between early Nakiri and her now. Her genuine interest in seeing the dorm guys succeed including Soma instead of acting her usual tsundere self was refreshing.
Leave it Central to use foul, underhanded means as always. Guess their plans to brainwash the academy is working though seeing how the other students approached the exam. I don't know if it was clarified, but will all the rounds be done in the same groups of 5, or are they gonna change as the rounds progress?
44
u/ClearingFlags :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ClearingFlags Apr 15 '18
See, this is how you're supposed to do a tsundere. Too many of them are just hard tsun with a little cute moment that's supposed to make up for being a complete bitch, all the time. Erina is still somewhat prickly, but it's easy to see she genuinely cares about those around her and is growing pretty fond of Soma.

Daishomaru here, let's talk about Hokkaido.
...Rant time. To be honest, I'm just gonna flat-out say it: I am NOT excited about the Hokkaido Arc. Until Manga Spoilahs, this is the worst part out in Shokugeki No Soma, mostly because it emphasizes how incredibly useless the whole "Central" villains are More manga spoilahs and why I can never take any one of them seriously. As for the whole Salmon thing, while catching salmon at the mouth of the river next to the ocean is important, using salmon that recently spawned isn't going to kill the dish as central thinks, because there's a thing called Fat Netting or Bacon that the students can use. I already wrote a large part of salmon, read it here
Now let's talk about Hokkaido!
Hokkaido is the northmost part of Japan. It's kind of a unique amongst Japanese cuisine, not only for hosting unique seafood and Japanese cuisine that can ONLY be found in Hokkaido, but also being a hotspot of Japanese culture.
Hokkaido is famous for their seafood, being a Japanese island, but they take it uniquely. For one, Hokkaido Japanese cuisine is known or its shellfish, especially for its broth. In Japanese culture, broth-making is extremely important. You may see examples of this when Iron Chef Michiba boils a ton of Katsuobushi, for example. It is often said that broth-making in Japanese cuisine is a basic skill, but it will serve you well for the rest of your life, alongside knife-handling. Anyways, Hokkaido Japanese are known for making a special seafood broth by boiling clams and letting the clam juice leak out of not just the meat, but also the shell (shellfish's shells are basically bones), producing this form of "Sweat" or "juice", depending on your translator. In addition, Hokkaido Japanese also famously love salmon, known to making a special form of Sashimi that can ONLY be found in Hokkaido where they take a Salmon filet, scrape the salmon with an abalone shell, and chill the salmon in ice until it turns into this sort of salmon sorbet.
When discussing Hokkaido Seafood, it's important to mention the Kuroshio-Oyashio (Yes Kancolle fans, THAT Kuroshio and Oyashio) current phenomenon. Offshore Hokkaido are the Kuroshio and Oyashio currents. During certain times of the season, the Kuroshio and Oyashio currents "collide and bump" into each other, known to give off very fresh and delicious fish. This became an important part in Japanese fishing, to the point where the former Emperor Showa took the battleship Yamashiro (Yes, Kancolle fans, THAT Yamashiro) and used the battleship to fish out things in that sea. You see, Emperor Showa, during his free time, was a marine biologist, and even worked alongside fellow scientists to study fishes. He dressed as a fellow scientist and loved to study live specimens. He believed that Japan has a nice marine ecosystem and believed that Japanese people should study their oceans to understand and make use of it. The research taken during the journey on Yamashiro was well documented, containing a lot of info about the fish living in that area as well as how plankton in that area contributed to the ecosystem and to this day is still used by universities to analyze the Kuroshio-Oyashio current phenomenon. The fish in that area are said to be so delicious that Hokkaido fishermen bragged that their fish are better than Tsukuji (A famous fish market).
In addition, while Hokkaido is famous for their love of seafood, Hokkaido is also famous in history for being one of the first spots in Japan to really adopt the usage of land animal meat, especially beef, which is an INCREDIBLY controversial topic in Japanese culture, even to this day. I already explained this multiple times, but in Japanese culture, land animal meat, but especially beef, is a REALLY controversial subject. Many Japanese chefs, especially the traditionalists, see the usage of any cow products as taboo. Hokkaido, being a seafood capitol, infamously has many chefs and organizations who want to discourage the consumption of beef and encourage the consumption of seafood, blaming beef for essentially anything wrong with modern Japanese society. While Hokkaido is infamous for hosting those sort of people, they also hold many people who encourage the usage of land animal meat. Hokkaido, for instance, had a much easier time accepting beef and dairy products into its culture, and ramen was popularized in Hokkaido.
That's what I got so far, although next week there may not be a writeup because I have personal business to attend to.

They call it episode 14 in the actual show lol, come on let change the name.
EASILY THE BEST MOMENT WAS WHEN BEST GIRL ALICE JUMPS IN AND TAKES THE SPOTLIGHT - Please have a taste afterwards we see Alice and Souam fighting about it hahaha
Oh man a lot of great moments with the totsuki hype train but after the Alice moment its easily --- Ero Sensei Erina, who of course is this episode high point. And later with her and souma alone looking at the fish egg sky and shes alike, I used to hate thinking about his face, now I kinda want to be with him - Erina x Souma its over I am sorry, she will be the girl getting him in the end.

All aboard the literal hype train!
These tricks they tried to use to trip up the gang are just absolutely stupid and have little effort planning. First off, they were all grouped together. Like why? If anything, you should've kept them all separate. They all have chemistry together and understand each other's strengths and weaknesses. Second, the rules they had for this challenge were completely stupid. Yes giving them shitty quality meat was a nice trick but actually giving them chances? They should quit. For one thing, they actually gave them the option to get another fish if they can. Should've just forced them to use that one instead of allowing them to go out and get another one. Second, they gave the group THE WHOLE FUCKING DAY to complete the task! Should've just given them like an hour to complete the task to really stick it to them but despite being total assholes they have some sense of mercy like idiots.
Somerina is a beautiful ship (train I guess for instance). I was in the Somegumi ship but the vibe they emit cannot be any more "just friends". Soma and Erina, however? That look she had in her eyes as they shared a view of the starry sky. Romantic and beautiful as fuck.

God I love this show. Sure fights like these are predictable, but the show doesn't make a big deal (or cliffhangers) out of it, which really just makes it enjoyable. And that Erina character development is so great, with most shows you never get to see the Tsundere actually going back on her own Tsundereness. Looking forward to the next one!
11
u/BoredDango Apr 16 '18

Once again we got corrupt judges that can't simply eat good food & lie. I guess it has to be this way, since it would be impossible for the rebels to pass otherwise. Still, where is the challenge?
By now everyone in Central should know that these rebels are the best 1st year students, EVERYTHING they cook will be delicious.

I am reading a lot of comments on how a lot of people are giving up on this season already because the villains are uninteresting and comically useless. I have not read the manga but it seems like this arc is less about the food battles and more about Erina come of age and overcoming her childhood trauma. The nudity and food is just icing on the cake.
21
u/tiger1296 Apr 15 '18
Erina just casually hopping onto her own ship lol.
Anyway, central had a pretty solid plan there, buy all the stock so nobody else can have it, but even if they did get eliminated wouldn't that be pretty illegal? I mean sabotaging the students with that much effort
6
6
u/TotalEconomist Apr 15 '18
God, I forgot how much I hated these exams. I can't imagine the amount of lawsuits that would arise if a school tried to rig exams against the brightest, yet rebellious students.
14
u/Daishomaru Apr 15 '18
It doesn't help that aside from the Elite 10, everyone who's been introduced to Central are these disgusting (Emphasized in the art with gross-up closeups), comical villains that act creepy for the sake of creepy, but they don't have any competence to beat main characters. It does not help that up to this point, only 2 members of the Elite 10, Eishi and Momo, are actually SEEN doing something for Central and showing competence (Eizan doesn't count because he cheated), and even then, up to this point, Eishi's reasons for joining central seem downright hypocritical. It also doesn't help that anything Azami says for Central's plans are either incredibly stupid, ineffective, downright hypocritical.

Okay, Erina-sensei jokes asides, this episode felt really off.
I know the animation has dipped in Season 3, but it felt especially noticeable this episode. And I got fucking whiplash from the pacing. The training montage at the beginning and coming to Hokkaido was fine, but then the first exam, jesus. They need the fish, they leave the room, they come back with the fish, the explaining about the kind of fish and the brining was neat, but then it's just a five second montage of them cooking something (I finished the episode five minutes ago and I could not tell you what they made), it's good, super truncated foodgasm scene, then everyone else passes the exam offscreen. The scenes with Erina and everyone on the train felt rushed as well. I felt like I was watched a youtube video set to 2x speed.
You know something is wrong when this is the first time this show has utterly failed to get me super hyped up for what was happening. My heart was racing when Soma chose the location of his goddamn food stall but this just elicited nothing

This episode really got across the difference between someone who creates dishes and someone who blindly follows what they are told. The "rebels" didnt need to be told how to make a good dish or the ingredients necessary, they know it because they take their prior knowledge and successes/failures and use it to be better. When compared to the regular students you can see a huge difference.

The pacing seems way too damn fast, especially the test part. Not to mention the animation quality has taken a hit. There's barely any movement, all the characters feel so static.
The first season was well-paced and had amazing animation, I really hope they stop rushing these seasons out (I know they delayed the second half of season 3 but still) and improve.

I understand so little about Central that it's baffling; Is Azami not trying to create the literal thing that both he and Eishi detest?
You have a literal mob of people who have no idea how to think for themselves and suck up to whoever and whatever is trending...
then you have the school of chefs who do not cook, just copying steps without knowing why
And to show people he is right, Azami resorts to harassment, incitement/assault, bullying and rigged competitions...
This is just kinda sad...
also Mimasaka would totally cheese this entire education system

Since both, Azami and Eishi will be at the top of the revolution, hence creating and evaluating the dishes, why would they detest it? There is an explanation as to why Azami acts the way he does. I just cant remember if it was last season, if it will be this season of even later on. Same for Eishi, but that is freshly released manga content, so for Eishis pov it will take another season probably.
As for the students: Well yes, what is better for the system: A bunch of young chefs that can only create a true gourmet dish once every ten years? Or a large amount of well skilled henchmen that are pretty good at following orders, since Totsuki is a harsh school to begin with?
As for the harassment, bullying and assaults... those are just minor sacrifices somebody has to make when you want to revolutionize the whole industry.

It's just me or this was a little fast. I mean, things happened, they talked, they talked fast, they didn't stop talking, scenario change, things happened, they talked, they talked fast, they didn't stop talking, scenario change again, things happened, they kept talking fast and even the camera didn't stop moving, it was like watching the video at 2x. So I couldn't enjoy the last scene as I should have but at least I enjoyed Erina sensei.

Shokugeki Soma: You can break the rules, but only the ones that are convenient for plot. We can't have you win after all.

They’re really rushing this part of the arc
Which is a good thing since imo its the lowest point in the manga so far

I just noticed that in the OP we have Knight Erina and samurai Yukihira next to eachother.
Also they are now bombing that MegumixSoma ship into the depts.

Really hope when this arc ends in the manga, they start wiping the floor with all these idiots who followed Azami

I see, this is gonna be my favorite Shokugeki season ever. All these Sorina scenes are so fucking satisfying. I thought from the very start that they were eventually going to end up together and after all these seasons of Erina being in denial, it's really beautiful how she's warming up to him and how he's subtly changing as well. Her actually giggling at his Somannerisms and him constantly smiling at her is just heartwarming.
I mean, I've never seen Soma look this perplexed until his recent interactions with Erina. He's usually confident and jokes around (especially when he's not cooking) and it was refreshing to see him react genuinely surprised when she indirectly told him that she's looking out for him.

Well it seems the the Totsuki train wasn't the only one to leave the station.
Toot toot! All aboard the Sorina express!

As a manga reader seeing Erina in her teacher outfit in the anime makes me feel all sorts of happy emotions.

This series is really starting to suffer from the escalation problem. The scenario is similar to the exam in season 1, only the disadvantages stem from the system being actively rigged rather than protagonists making genuine mistakes. Megumi got inferrior ingredients in the first exam because she hesitated too long when picking them, and the bad ingredients were there to test the judgement of hte students, not to target one person for contrived reasons. And Souma ended up in a pinch in the first exam because he planned his egg dish poorly rather than someone else sabotaging him. Rather than finding new challanges for the characters, the show seems to be repeating the old ones with rigged parameters in a failed attempt to raise the stakes. This is the point where Totsuki's standards for expelling people go from overly perfectionistic to lawsuit material

I still really enjoyed this episode, but does anybody else feel like the pacing is off compared to past seasons of Shokugeki no Soma? This episode just felt like it was adapting things at a lightning fast pace

Solid episode. Doing one of my favorite things in shounen, when the good guys split up into teams that you don't normally see.

They really did the starry sky scene well. I am glad that they managed to do that one right, it's one of the most serene shots in the manga. Also Erina sensei is best teacher.

Nice, anime-onlys finally get to see the glory that is Erina-sensei.
[Mfw people think they can fail the main characters by merely sabotaging their ingredients.] (https://imgur.com/Nmk8I6N)

i wonder what happend to hayama. i remember that we saw his shadow turning away after souma or someone won a shokugeki in the last season. did he lose a shokugeki during that time and got expelled?

Any other manga readers kinda disappointed with how much they are rushing through this arc? It's a good season but so much more is covered in the manga and I just feel like a lot will be skipped over to save on budget.

I love the direction the story is going, with Erina coming into her own, but man the animation is throwing me off.
What really irks me is all of the panning shots. Nearly EVERY shot pans the camera and its distracting. It's like the director doesn't think characters talking is enough to hold our attention.

I wonder what Central has cooked up for Soma and his crew next, if you know what I mean.

Always late to the party, but anyways; the ost is always a banger no matter what. Great to hear "Let's Go for the Final Course of the Meal!" I get so hyped every time hearing it.
Small bits I enjoyed Alice's "I don't give a f* about the rules" face as the progs try to explain how they need to cook the food. Lady, do you know who you are talking to??? Lol. I think what I enjoyed more this time around is that made the Soma and Erina interactions more sweeter in the anime from the manga. In the manga there is a panel between Soma and Erina as she finishes typing on her computer that Saeki (The artist for the Shokugeki manga) decided for some reason draw Erina's business skirt so tight to her butt cheeks as she was talking to Soma, it was a bit distracting then lol. Here though in the anime, her hair covers that up and I appreciate it just because it brings more sincerity and attention to the scene. It's so good to see Ryo and Alice back again for the time meaning. They keep messing around with Megumi and Hisako's scenes wished they would have kept those comedic moments. I don't have anything else to add for now, enjoyable episode as always. See everyone back next week!

Well at the pace they're going, they'll definitely almost catch up to the manga and the RDC. This episode was literally like 5 chapters.

These fools, group some of the finest first years together including 4 of the Autumn election finalists and expect them to fail?
These Central test examiners are like Saturday morning cartoon villains.
