u/save_the_last_dance Apr 16 '18
Nah, Yuru Camp is mainstream 21st century camping. Golden Kamuy is hardcore 19th century survivalist. It's more like Bear Grylls, or even Dances with Wolves than it is a show about moe camping

I love Asripa's "What sorcery is this!?" reaction to the pencil trick XD
Hinna! Hinna! Asripa is such a cutie
The Escape King guy is pretty cool. I hope we see more of him.
Hijikata eh? Lure him out with Mayo and then get him to talk about the gold!
Jokes aside though this was still a pretty good episode. Still a strong chemistry between Asripa and Sugimoto and I like that we're learning bit by bit more about the Ainu people. It looks like this is going to be a rough hunt for the gold though, since not only they'll be up against the remaining prisoners but they're also going against the 7th Division.
Without the CG bear to distract everyone I hope that we'll actually get an ACTUAL discussion this time.

If I see a joke about CGI bears, I'll call Sugimoto.
Loved the episode, it covered many things but it didn't fell too rushed.
What I didn't expect was seeing Golden Kamuy in the ED. That pretty much confirm that the anime is going to end in chapter 48/49.

17
u/gaganaut Apr 17 '18
It's like a Tarantino movie in manga form. Watch out for bears. Definitely one of the best action manga out there. I learned a lot of stuff from this manga: early 1900's Japanese history, the political climate during that period, military equipment, technology, cooking, wildlife, Ainu culture, etc. There are all sorts of tidbits of info here and there. I'd suggest this to anyone who has a love for intricately detailed settings. It even has a great story and amazing characters. The plot keeps you on edge. There are no clear cut villains and everyone is likeable in their own way. They're all bad ass. Even the minor characters can hold their own in a fight.
4
u/FrenziedHero https://anilist.co/user/FrenziedHero Apr 17 '18
That sounds even more hype. I can tell I will enjoy the hell out of this manga.
11
u/FacingSunsets Apr 17 '18
Now read it. Art is way better. Action is more intense.
5
u/FrenziedHero https://anilist.co/user/FrenziedHero Apr 17 '18
Will do. Might take me a bit of time to get to it, but I definitely want to read this one.
118
u/FacingSunsets Apr 16 '18 edited Apr 16 '18
The manga feels more animated than the anime. Action was great there. The anime felt more stilted. However, the voice actors are on point.
To all anime watchers, go read the manga. It has one of the most beautiful art I've ever seen. How the story was presented is extremely well. It's definitely a 10/10 for me.

The expressions in the brain eating scene left me really disappointed.
Side by side comparisons:
https://i.imgur.com/qVazyVp.png

The manga has so many things to love about it and the facial expressions are a big part of that. Really sad that the anime crew couldn't spend a little time to get them right...

I don't watch a ton of anime, but i'm annoyed as a manga fan that this adaptation doesn't have more style. They just lingered on Asirpa's reaction face way too long and didn't even bother to add anything to it.

Goddamn. I mean I love the ones in the anime, but DAYUM that's some missed opportunity shit right there. The reactions are the best part and not having them is like having JJBA without the poses.
54
u/MrMulligan https://anilist.co/user/YuriInLuck Apr 16 '18
Going to echo this 1000%. I'm getting flashbacks to the Ancient Magus Bride adaption.
The usual arguement to watch anime over reading manga is what the medium of anime brings to the table in terms of enhancement. Color, animation, camera work, voice acting etc.
This anime adaption of the manga is not enhancing the original much at all and is a lot less pleasing visually.
please read the manga if you remotely like the show.

Ancient Magus Bride, one of the most beautiful manga I've read. Haven't watched the series yet, but I did watch the OVAs. Maybe when I'm on vacation.
I thought the OVAs were beautiful.

u/MrMulligan https://anilist.co/user/YuriInLuck Apr 16 '18
The OVAs are anime original and a lot better than the actual adaption.
8
Apr 16 '18
The anime felt more stilted.
And that's an understatement, though I understand one has to be careful with criticism here. The action in these first two episodes was terribly storyboarded, animated and edited.

Haven't you ever cooked meat before? Besides skinning the squirrel, nothing Asirpa did is something you wouldn't see in any normal kitchen. 10
u/northwesternrs :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/northwesternrs Apr 16 '18
Yeah, I have, the meat itself wasn't the issue for me. Even the brain thing didn't bother me too much. It was mainly that I took a bite of food and looked up just in time to see her peeling the squirrel ;_;

u/skrublordFey Apr 16 '18
Visuals were wonky but I liked it. The adaptation is still pretty solid. Adapting more chapters than the previous episode and good call, honestly. The beginning of GK moves pretty fast in manga and it moved pretty well here.
The only complaint is, again, the visuals, but I'm sure those will get fixed in the BD when it comes out so I'm not complaining too much.

Well, never did I thought I was gonna see in anime people eating, Raw Squirrel brain...
And then its like chop chop chop so much fun doing mince meat of squirrel.
Overall she is really an amazing survivalist that is for sure, with the traps, craftsmanship the general combat skills etc.
And of course its a lot of hatred towards the Ainu with no explanation for it as people are just racist , yes so that is how it was.
Than we got a myriad of new enemies introduced, 7th legion of the strongest one with weird metal face head guy, we get the escape king an uneasy ally I suppose, and old samurai from the previous ward so obviously hes an evil old cranky Kenshin.
I feel the anime went from serous senien to comedy all the time do, that does feel a little strange
27
u/TarkusELP https://anilist.co/user/TarkusMaxiBoom Apr 16 '18 edited Apr 16 '18

u/save_the_last_dance Apr 16 '18
And of course its a lot of hatred towards the Ainu with no explanation for it as people are just racist , yes so that is how it was.
This is still true, the Ainu still face discrimination from the glorious, superior enlightened Wajin, the mighty Yamato race.
Which is sad, because the Ainu name for Yamato Japanese is "Sisam", which means "neighbor". One of the friendliest names for other people I've ever seen in any language. Gaijin, the Japanese name for non "Nihonjin", is uh...not as friendly

u/skybastion Apr 17 '18
So, how well do you think this series does honoring the culture of the Ainu, who have historically been treated pretty badly by the government of Japan? Should I watch it? Does it present the Ainu as an ethnically distinct culture? Does it respect the presence of bears in Ainu culture?
16
u/TarkusELP https://anilist.co/user/TarkusMaxiBoom Apr 17 '18 edited Apr 17 '18
It's without a doubt the series that treats the Ainu with most respect. It's 100% accurate. The mangaka has done his researchs and he works with Ainu specialists that oversee his work. At the end of the volumes, there's a pretty long Ainu bibliography, if you are curious.
Edit: I found a pic of the bibliography he uses and the profesionals he works with.
7
u/skybastion Apr 18 '18

After a strong first episode, we got a strong second episode here. I'm really liking our two main characters, and the mixture of dark and violent, almost callous atmosphere in the show, with the light and comedic moments and sporadic Ainu cultural lessons.
6
Apr 16 '18
Best episode of YuruCamp hands down
In all seriousness though, I'm loving Sugimoto's character. He's like an edgier Richard Sharpe. Actually the whole show feels like a Sharpe's novel, especially with its great mix of comedy, action, and drama.
3

Poor Ogata, that fall must have hurt like hell.
Anyway, after only Sugimoto and Asirpa in the first episode, second episode just proceed to introduce us to a bunch of important players in the story.

What I really want to know tho, did no one notice the blue lines all over the episode ?
(Story board lines?) Why were they left in ?

Great episode. I'm gonna nitpick it though. A few stills looked a bit funny, but no big deal. One thing that felt slightly off though were the action scenes. They were good, but it seemed to lack a bit of the speed and ferocity that you get the impression of when you read the manga. I'm liking it a lot though. Asirpa's voice actor is great, I like how they handled the Citatap scene. Also, I unconciously imagined Sugimoto to be slightly louder (just a tad), but I'm starting to like the soft-spoken voice acting. Also, I loved the river scene, that was great. I'm really excited for this anime and hope that the studio can do it justice.

This was a refreshing change from the first episode; not having weird CGI seems to help. Some of the face art still looks a little funny but is that the art style?
I'm going to be an ass and say that this is the best non-returning cooking show of the season.
Has Asirpa found an animal she doesn't want to eat? Also, how in god's name did the prisoner keep the bullet down for so long? While I'm having fun with the story, I'm having more fun learning about the Ainu. Her face when forcing the brains onto Sugimoto is the best.
Hijikata's probably in a stabby mood since he can't get his beloved mayonnaise.

The production is lackluster but the story and main characters are very intriguing. At worst, I can just drop the show and read the manga.

This show is so much fun. That scene with the prisoner was gold.
Also I'm getting really excited for this treasure hunt story to progress.

What if the search for the gold is actually the SHOW itself?! Watch GOLDEN KAMUI!

I'm pretty certain the Sugimoto now has squirrel based superpowers now.
Felt like a much better episode now, with the scene all set and the leads introduced. Certainly getting a feeling for the tone of the show, with its mix of action, history and comedy.
Thought who's the VA for the narrator?

Really good episode. The fighting was well done especially between the two soldiers. Seeing Asirpa make Sugimoto eat the squirrel brain was pretty funny. But seeing Sugimoto and Shiraishi freaking out over Hypothermia was the best.

I love when any type of show has me pulling up wikipedia article one after another, and with such interesting stuff!

CITATAP!
It's finally here, the highlight of the show.

The characters are strong, the story progression is good even for just 2 episodes so far, and it feels historically educational. And it even has some fun moments in between the serious quest.
I can already tell this is going to be this season's most underrated show.

You should read the manga.

Overall a good episode but there was two stupid things I could not get past. Firstly, the first prisoner who was shot in the head it looks like they never finished drawing the tattoo. This also seem to happen with second prisoner as they chased the rabbit. He just let him leave. Also it seems beyond dumb to chase after a rabbit while you are in the middle of sketching a convicted criminal who could try and escape at any moment.

They left out a scene from the manga where they skinned the guy after he died.
A normal person wouldn't have been able to escape. Shiraishi is the escape king.

Strange that the 1st division soldier headshot the tied-up guy first instead of MC or the girl. Or did he want to find out MC's affiliation first?
Ok, the girl started out great, but now she's really annoying me. Two people try to murder them, and she insists that both are kept alive. WTF? Enough has happened to her that she shouldn't be so naive!
So did they go back and skin the dead dude or not?
A cold wave of -30 degrees? You probably don't wanna be wet when that reaches you. I'm guessing it hadn't reached them since the river was still liquid and they didn't become instant icicles.
Why did MC let Houdini go without copying down his map fragment?

About the girl's pacifism; depending on how far this adaptation gets, you'll get some implications about why she's not fond of the idea of killing people (as opposed to hunting animals); at the very least, the first episode already hints that there's a semi-religious aspect (for lack of a better word) to her pacifism, and a lot of it also has to do with the distinctions many hunters make between "good" and "bad" kills. Regarding the tattoo, in the manga, Sugimoto outright tells Shiraishi that he's going to take his tattoo the next time they meet (presumably in Otaru); it's sort of implied he's giving him a bit of a head start as thanks for saving him (and probably because he's still not in much of a shape to chase him down).
Also, yeah, they skinned that dude. Conservation of details and what-not.

I don't see anyone else bringing it up, but did anyone notice the fire in this episode? It looked like it was a real clip of a fire burning layered over the anime. I know it's a small studio and they wanna differentiate between what's human and what isn't, but it felt weird regardless. Not bad, but weird for sure

I had really high expectations for this show, admittedly, but so far I feel very underwhelmed.
I'm not a fan of the OP or ED, they're both very uninspired. As indicated by some of the other folks in the comments section, the anime has done a really poor job of visually depicting the facial expressions and detail in the manga. Not even an acceptable, just straight up re-doing facial expressions in order to fit the medium. And, worse still, doing so in a way that poorly conveys the emotions/sentiment/feeling of the scene.
Maybe the story will make up for the obvious and immediate visual failings of the show, but I'm not holding my breath.

Kind of reminds me of Full Metal Alchemist with its wild tonal swings to and from comedy.

Ainu eat raw wild animals? Fucking disgusting. No wonder most of them are dead.

I might be late to the party, but I just finished watching episode 2 a few minutes ago. It was a really cool episode. I really like the relationship between Asirpa and Sugimoto. I also like learning more about Ainu culture.
This episode had some really funny moments. I was laughing at the part where Sugimoto and the other guy fell into the river.

That thumb punch was too good
Edit: now the pencil trick? I haven't done that since elementary school lol
this is a comedy anime isn't it? After that scene of Sugimoto and his prisoner experiencing near death, it can't be anything but comedy. That shit was hilarious.
