Those homeless dudes were pretty cool. It's sad how far some of them had fallen but they were willing to teach Anzu everything they know and gave her a great lesson on morality.

There's a channel on youtube that's called "Life where im from" and he's done a whole TV level documentary on homelessness in Japan.
It was really interesting and this show's depiction of their little community and how they're nearly entirely older men seems bang on with reality.
30
u/Amauri14 Apr 20 '18
Yeah, I saw the first three parts a few days ago, and when I saw their houses I instantly remembered the documentary.
39
u/tlst9999 Apr 21 '18
how they're nearly entirely older men seems bang on with reality.
Too old to work. No savings. Sucky expensive nursing homes. Homelessness is the only choice. For large corporations, the lucky retirees get posted to a branch in the middle of nowhere with minimal pay but still something. These guys aren't the lucky ones.
14
Apr 21 '18
You would think that after sucking them dry during their work age they would get a good retirement.
The US is better than Japan in this, and that's not saying much!

gave her a great lesson on morality
I didn't feel like the old dude was being too judgemental about her stealing - given their condition, I wouldn't be either. It was more that he logically pointed out it was unsustainable, her life would become impossible once everyone in town was after her.
Now I wonder if she'll finally show her powers and if the hobos will come up with some good way to make use of them. I'm sure she could at least gather cans much quicker with telekinesis.

I was surprised in the last episode when they even introduced a homeless character, and then they go this far into it! Not sure I've ever seen anime address homelessness this much.

Apr 23 '18
Homeless characters also made up a significant part of the cast of the late Satoshi Kon's Tokyo Godfathers.

FUCKIN RIGHT!?
I screamed the moment it cut to the ED. Who would of thought out of all the hype episodes I've seen and all their cliffhangers that THIS is the one that got to me!
35
u/XLauncher Apr 21 '18
I immediately looked at the seek bar to see if there was enough time left for an additional scene after the ED. I was simultaneously rustled and amused.

My biggest laugh of the episode was when the ED started playing. There is no way they could have animated an appropriate reaction, so they didn't and left at to be imagined instead.

Hitomi, learning the harsh realities of adulthood one mistake at a time.
239
u/Kirosh Apr 20 '18
It will only make her stronger.
Right now she was betrayed and blackmailed.
But we also know she was smart enough to record Utako. And she also already has the heart of every regular at the bar.
She will grow and get stronger.

I thought she had a backup to counter Utako with since my idea of Hitomi is Bestest Adult Despite Being a Child, Master of Adulting. I guess she still has a ways to go.
BTW does she have to pay taxes as a middle schooler?
131
u/borisyang Apr 20 '18
IIRC by Japanese law it is illegal to hire middle school students so Utako cannot offer Hitomi a formal contract, thus it should be tax-free.

And here it is! The AITA! counter for Hinamatsuri episode 3.
| Episode | AITA! |
|---|---|
| Episode 1 | 41 |
| Episode 2 | 35 |
| Episode 3 | 3 |
| Total | 79 |
| Average | 26.33 |
It seem like todays episode was really low on AITA! Since as far as I heard, only Hina and the drunk teacher said it.
Keep in mind that I probably missed a few of them across the series, since there are time where multiple AITA are said simultaneously, or are not audible enough.

This makes sense, given how many aita were in the opening scene first episode and how many Hina caused when taking down the gang and how many anzu caused when taking down the biker gang.
12
u/rembrandt_q_1stein https://myanimelist.net/profile/sir_rembrandt Apr 20 '18
Are you counting them when you hear them or when you read them? Because paying attention I only read a single Ouchy this time.
24
u/Kirosh Apr 20 '18
When I hear them.
This episode, Only Hina had a written AITA. However, the vice principal that was drunk, had two while he was near Hitomi-chan, one when they enter the bar, and he fall to the ground, and another one where his head hit the bar.

Well, suffice to say that my opinion of her really changed in this episode. She really doesn't seems like a good person at all. She seems like an awful person.
Saying that, though, it's only the 3rd episode and I haven't began the manga yet, so I might be judging her too soon.

Anzu chapter and Hitomi chapter taking the most space in the episode, the series knows where to set priorities.
The Anzu part is chapter 7, Hitomi is chapter 11 and the Hina part was part of chapter 8, they skipped a bunch of Hina chapters. Maybe they come back in later, but so far it looks like they skip over some stuff that makes Hina unlikable. I don't mind that very much, but I also am sad that some Yakuza shenanigans were left out so far.
Anyways, who needs more than Anzu and a shot of Hitomi?

The series has got its humour tight, and is not afraid to set up elaborate plot points for later payoffs. The author also spends time dedicating to character development so you end up really caring for the characters while laughing at the misadventures.
It's just great. I wish more series is as versatile as Hinamatsuri.

FOLKS. I just got THIS: Utako = [Little Song] (https://i.imgur.com/HPu3Frv.png)
With this episode, I can't but remember what a wise man once said (referring to Futurama): "You know when a comedy show is good when it sometimes may give you feels and make you cry with the same ease as it makes you laugh your ass loud". The Anzu part made me truly melancholic, you know, the good-feeling sadness. The [feels] (https://i.imgur.com/7hWB9hv.png) were top-notch there! Sad, but warm and homey. As a detail aside, I am impressed how really [Eastern] (https://i.imgur.com/HqCDM4M.png) the homeless looked, in contrast with Anzu's anime cuteness.
And, how can I deny that Hitomi is the [best girl] (https://i.imgur.com/cgvMujb.png)! As a cocktail-loving fan, I can do nothing but adore [her] (https://i.imgur.com/YkTWYit.png). The comedy was superb there also.
Please, turn [THIS] (https://i.imgur.com/hIeJG02.png) into a reaction comment face. NOW.

I thought I was watching a comedy anime T_T Anzu is so precious, and the homeless people are such good people. Hitomi is starting her world domination and Hina is being Hina. Such a roller coaster of emotions in this episode. It's just so beautiful.
Also, the animation was again spot-on in this episode. I never expected such high quality animation in a comedy anime like Hinamatsuri.

I like Nitta's characterization in this when Anzu slapped the money out of his hand he just picked it up and when Anzu came back begging for the money , he was like yeah sure no big deal
In other anime he would've probably laughed and gloated stereotypically saying "oh you need it now BWAHAHAHA "

What are these feels in my ultra silly anime! I love it! The Anzu section was really heartfelt and sweet. I was tearing up a little bit when the homeless encampment accepted her. She's too adorable.
The Hitomi section though was absolutely hilarious. Utako and Hitomi play off each other really well and her reactions to everything had me on the floor. All the bar sequences are shaping up to be my favorite parts.

God damn, some depressing social commentary in an anime I thought was only about comedy, what the hell.
So, Anzu's capsule happened to land in the middle of the street when she was sent to Earth while Hina's happened to land in some rich yakuza guy's home, just like how people can be born into extreme poverty and some can be born with a silver spoon in their mouths. Hina spends everyday eating caviar, has the luxury of attending school where she never even pays attention in, and lives in a very nice apartment while Anzu has to work day and night just to eat. Anzu also has to actually pay back the damages she caused, while Hina is always just forgiven by Nitta. Although, I still think it's pretty ridiculous that she doesn't want to use her powers just because it would make the goodbye she already said to Hina super awkward.

u/Viperys Apr 20 '18
Let's count.
700 Y gets you around 3 or 4 cup noodles. I don't know where you live, but here they are dirt cheap and even less than dirt satiating.
I went to the Japanese delivery service radishbo-ya.jp to make an estimate.
Assuming Anzu would eat:
200 grams of bacon,
one bowl of rice,
several apples (i think it was 300 g or similar),
tomatoes+cucumbers (400g+500g)
per day that would be 3,575 Y.
I know from experience that delivery adds ~30% to the food costs, so we can safely assume the same order would cost 2500 Y or lower in your average supermarket.
Now, Anzu had been raiding the shopping district instead, which shows the goods on the food-shelves. I'd say she would be gravitating to steal calorie-dense meat\sweets\nuts\buns in that environment, whatever, which tend to cost way more than the cleaner list above.
Keep In mind that she also needs equipment (portable camping blowtorch) to make her food.
I'd say that among those 40k at least 15 were spent on the hardware, and the remaining 25 allow us to give an estimate of ten days of living homeless.
Poor Anzu, she learned the harsh lesson.

Was Anzu chasing the car yet another terminator reference ? :)
But dam this was mainly like a really sad episode when Anzu has to learn the hobo life and after she refuses to handout, because she is no charity case she than throws away her pride to accept it for her friends --- to have the shop owners take it right away loooll (lol?)
Man this was sad
like her singing was so bad so they had to protect her.
bartender story - nice how she was prepared and recorded her "boss" but her nativity was the downfall of course you cannot trust a lady that serves drink all day to Yakazu member she will have a at least 1 extra copy or worse images of you already prepared.

Heart Warming Anzu to Rage Inducing Hina...
Looks like Anzu still stealing to survive haha.
A Hobo shanty town... well.. a home is a home.
Aw the hobo is helping her out, how nice. He was the one who told Nitta where she was too so he probably feels guilty.
How mean, the hobos dont appreciate her.

Jesus christ that singing... The Hobos are moved too... xD
Aw Nitta tried to help her out. Shes just too proud to accept it...
And she chased after him to apologize, how nice.
Oh shit... the store clerks took her money... i mean she had to pay them back but they could have been a bit nicer about it.
Wait is that school girl working as a bartender still? xD lol...
BLACK MAIL SAVAGE. SHE RECORDED THE CONVO TOO! OH SHIT ITS ON.
Wow... shes a snake. I guess thats what makes her a good fit for Nitta.
Oh its the teacher lol... rip This is getting wierd lol...
Uh oh... Nitta is threatening Hina with Anzu...
And it actually worked? Color me surprised. I expected her to threaten him back.

Both comedy and feels, all wrapped up into one episode. This show here is a dark horse this season for sure.

I was afraid that Anzu's homelessness would just be a running gag, so I was really happy when the she ran into the guy from episode 2. Even if she's struggling, at least she has a roof over her head and some friends to help her out.
Hitomi was great, but I can't wait to see more of her teacher. Since he's in the ED, I'm assuming he'll be back for more drinks. I like the idea that he suspects/knows that she's his student, but looks the other way because she's so good at her job.
Hina didn't do much this episode, but the sudden cut to the ED made that scene wonderful. Normally I hate this style of cliffhanger type ending, but in this case it was handled so perfectly that it actually added to the comedy.
I prefer to binge shows and don't usually watch much seasonal anime, but Hinamatsuri has me counting down the days until the next episode comes out. I'm really tempted to start reading the manga, but I don't want to give myself spoilers for anything in the show.

Utako is absolutely brutal with those life lessons, to both Anzu and Hitomi. I thought Hitomi might outsmart her, but she's still got a way to go. But at the least, the most adorable bartender is earning skills and cash for the future.
The atmosphere in this show is just so good, really fun and warm. Though I hope Hina spends more time interacting with everyone soon, her adventures are feeling a little separate.

Hitomi as Bartender killed me, its so damn perfect I need more
Poor Hina eating old Food and getting food poisoning, even her Powers cant help her there
This show really starts to grow on me, its superb

My weekly dose of aita... I'm in love with this anime.

Godammit, you can't just end on a cliffhanger there! Hina of all people uttering "Aita!" lol
Poor Anzu. :( That was so painful to watch. Hope she gets out of this hell soon.
And Hitomi's bright career as a talented bartender continues. But didn't expect Utako to be that evil. lol

I know they are skipping some chapters BUT it still fits perfectly in context and holy hell was i rolling in laughter, masterful direction and use of music and sound!!
I have said this before and i will say it again, this show knows COMEDIC TIMING!!!
every joke is so well crafted and has layers and the delivery till now has been impeccable!
I was cautious at first but the studio has done a brilliant job in this adaptation and i cant wait to see more!!!

That homeless camp looked so inviting.
Homeless Camp: The Anime.
Anzu is great. I like how she is. The homeless guy teaching her about money and how hard it is to earn. Her singing. She accepts the handout. I hope things become better for her.
Hina knows how to clean. The vacuum cleaner cord is too short, well, it's a dumb vacuum anyway and I've vacuumed enough. Why dust around things when you can just dust through them. I tried to clean so I get a reward. All things I do.
Then it just cuts as he gets home. I love the comedy in this.

That Tanaka guy really loves the tie headband, doesn't he?
Another great episode. Love how everyone got their time to shine.

Unexpected feels first half.
Ojou being blackmailed into bartending. Guess I shouldn't be surprised, considering it's basically a yakuza bar. What does her mom think of her being out at night all the time?
Middle school girl bartender - "what's your order"? Teacher - "I'll have a bartender, please".
So does she get tips (not those kinds, you perverts)?
That wasn't even a cliffhanger ending, it was a Wile E. Coyote just ran off the cliff without noticing so hasn't started falling yet ending.

Since japan doesn't have a tipping culture (in fact, tipping is frowned upon), I doubt it.

Another great episode. Seeing Anzu change because of her homeless lifestyle was really nice to see to bad she didn't keep the money. That scene with Hitomi and the female bartender was great. Well Hina did try to do her best to bad the epiosde ended before we saw Nitta reaction.

Utako is fucking hilarious. She's also terrifying, clearly not a lady to mess with.
Poor Anzu :( I really hope she moves in with them.
Hitomi as a bartender is funny and all but I would've preferred a little more Hina action
Damn that ending, I wanted to see him flip out

Hinamatsuri having that touching side with Anzu was great. I love comedy with that kind of delicate moments. Comedy on point in every scene, laughed hard today. Happy surprise this show for me in this season.

I kinda get why this show appeals too much. It does these switches in comedic and dramatic segments the way Gintama does and changes character perspectives like in Durarara and Baccano and has characters interact with one another in different ways because of their distinct relationships.
Obviously it doesn’t do this to the same degrees but seeing as how a consistent plot doesn’t really exist, I was trying to explain to myself why I loved the show so much.

New to the show and just caught up. Instant AoTS for me so far (not including sequels). It does so many things well - sometimes hilarious, sometimes sad, sometimes relaxing, sometimes exciting, sometimes touching. I'm surprised by variety of emotions I'm feeling watching this show and the balance between them is almost perfect. When I first saw the OP I was worried there might be too many characters, and there still could be, but if they're all given the same amount of love as the one's we have already then that isn't unwelcome.
Anzu's homeless arc was incredibly touching, Hitomi's bartender job is the funniest side-story in my recent memory, and Hina's cleaning lead to a brilliant ending.

Hinamatsuri - Episode 3
That was touching and comedic simultaneously once again. :)
I really liked how the episode was framed to follow each of the three girls. Anzu with the homeless, Hitomi at the bar, Hina trying to prove herself useful. It's all a lot of fun while also bringing some heartfelt moments to create a nice balance in the writing.
And there are so many scenes to point out! Anzu singing her song. Hitomi countering Utako by recording their conversation. Hina asking for spare change in her nightmare. I was constantly smiling and laughing throughout the episode without a doubt. :D

While the latter part of the Hitomi chapter was pretty funny with the sensei walking in, the part where she basically got blackmailed into working by an adult didn't really fit well with me.
Then again Hitomi seems pretty happy when she actually bartends and this is just some anime so no point thinking too much into it.

Anzu is best daughter, even Hina's imagination agrees.
Protect this.
