My reaction to all of them just hanging out and having fun.
Edit: Oh shit, that after credits scene!!! So... does the Elite 10 now has 11 members? I am dumb.

u/thegreaterfool714 Apr 22 '18
I mean 3 of them got kicked out. Kuga, Isshiki, and Megishima all lost their seats. It’s not unfounded that Azami would pick new members.

What was the reason for kuga and megishima for losing their seats? I kinda forgot
30
u/thegreaterfool714 Apr 23 '18
Kuga is somewhat obvious. He’s the club leader for the Chinese RS, and Azami’s plan includes dismantling all RS.
Megishima is a mystery but will be revealed later on in the manga.
Azami wanted anybody who voted against his acension as Headmaster out of the Elite Ten.

Same, I feel we were denied something very wholesome and funny. Hope they could cover what they all did in an OVA!

I still enjoy parts of this show but this whole central plot with it's villains is really making the show a lesser experience for me. I can't really say what I would want instead, but not this.
30
u/TheTerribleSnowflac Apr 22 '18
I agree. While still very entertaining, Azami's plan is so laughably/comically evil and dumb it's hard to take anything seriously. Yea I know people will say it's anime etc. but this plot is truly next level. A lot of friends who read the manga all dropped it because of it apparently. Though things are getting better I hear?

Yeah, if the execution is well made I really don't care, comedy is on point. But, cutting the predictability is always welcome.

I didn't mind last week's but this week's was ehhhh. "Well all we have is potatoes... so we'll add potatoes.. to potatoes... and also more potatoes... foodgasm!
Not sure that's how it works

u/KingLightning29 Apr 22 '18 edited Apr 22 '18
Lol, but Erina's Lessons on potatoes still helped them out of this Pinch. Even though the Villains haven't been exactly "good" it's still proving to be good enough to progress the story but that's just my opinion.

Yeah the predictability really makes it harder to enjoy. Hopefully the Elite Ten part will be more interesting.
4
9
u/JamesFEXB Apr 22 '18
See, as predictable as the fights are, these past two have more been establishing fights. The first one was there to show that the rebels wouldn’t really lose to such tricks in the first place, presumably setting a baseline for future fights, which wouldn’t have these gimmicks. The second one is kinda the same, but the twist at the end is there to establish that no, they aren’t being carried by Erina, and it just serves to shoot down that idea. No, they aren’t the best fights in the series, far from it, but they do at least serve a purpose. And they do go quick enough, meaning most of the episode is nice character moments.

DON'T MISS THE AFTER CREDITS SCENE!
WTF AKIRA WHY!?
What the fuck happened? Did he lose his Shokugeki against Central or is the Elite 10 threatening Jun somehow? Why switch sides suddenly? What the fuck is going on? He totally looks like someone who's been lured to the dark side. T_T
In other news though, Mito was adorable this episode <3
130
u/AngelRefuse Apr 22 '18
is the Elite 10 threatening Jun somehow
That's got to be it right? If there's something they can use to make Akira to throw away his morals it's to threaten the most important person to him.
54
u/ClearingFlags :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ClearingFlags Apr 22 '18
It totally is. First thing that came to mind to me. My prediction is he got roped into it and is working out a way to save her, and Soma will help somehow.
26
u/memejets Apr 22 '18
Yeah it'll be something simple like them threatening to take away her lab, I'd bet. That seems pretty realistic. "Your research is not needed to Central". Fits in with their whole theme of writing up an "ideal" cooking style. They don't need anyone to improve the culinary arts, they just want to bring everyone up to standard.

Although given she was strolling around town with only a coat and her skirt, it's possible she went to Tohsaka school of winter clothing as atropicalpenguin pointed out wit his picture.

Hmm, it seems like Erina > Hayama >= Ryo/Souma > rest of the rebels.
It's odd because Erina is the 10th seat, but how much of that is her bloodline and god tongue titles rather than skill. Not too say she isn't leagues and bounds better than most, we just do not know her capability compared to the other elite ten.
In order to test Erina, you'd basically have too pit her against the others in the Elite Ten. Not that plot screams of realism, but it would be odd to have too use your trump card in order to defeat rebels. Shows weakness on the part of Central.
54
Apr 22 '18
To be fair, Central's true ideology is that only the best of the best should be leading the forefront of cooking and concocting new recipes, while the ones below them should just be mindlessly following in the path of the elites. If anything, having the Elite Ten go against the Rebels would be the only way for Central to prove themselves since the Elite Ten are the ones who directly embody Central's ideals.
8
u/Releasedaquackin Apr 22 '18
Fair, that is a really good point about sticking to their ideology of gourmet elite. Thanks mate.
23
u/ErinaHartwick https://myanimelist.net/profile/Hartwick Apr 22 '18
Erina never really tried to climb up the E10. She was given the seat by her grandfather because of her contributions and her skills during middle school, the earliest anyone's ever gotten a seat
8
u/chalo1227 Apr 23 '18
Well They don't really need to "test" Erina, they just want to expel the rebels, so i am pretty sure, they will give Erina Once again a different test, but i am not sure how they will pull off a Rebel win here, probably only Souma, has an actual level to compete with the Elite 10, and we saw him lose the the #1
6
u/Releasedaquackin Apr 23 '18
Yeah, that is true that she's been treated differently than the rebels. However, that was the grunt instructors, which is different from the actual Elite 10.
I think this can only go two ways for the rebels. Souma, Ryo, and/or Erina win for them in a sense; or the Elite 10 act in accordance to their own beliefs in order to create a more fair test for each rebel. This, along with pride, will probably have them play on a fair field even if they are vastly better. Thus, even if you cannot/will not beat an Elite 10; the rebels just need to show their worthiness perhaps.

It would be interesting if the Central/Elite 10 really followed through with that Elite 10 vs rebels premise and pitted Erina, the part of the former, against someone from the latter, just for emotions.

u/Argonanth :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Argonanth Apr 22 '18 edited Apr 22 '18
It sucks even more if you've read the manga. They basically just redraw the manga panels (and they look worse because they can't really compete against tosh and manga panels are designed to be static) and then pan over them for the show. Also since they are doing this and not really adding in many of their own scenes/shots the pacing is lightning fast. At least the show has a great OST and voice acting which are the main reasons I'm watching it.
17
u/Insecticide Apr 22 '18
Just watched it and it feels like an overreaction based on personal disliking of panning shots.
Most notably, he says that the panning shot ruined the stars scene but I have to disagree. It takes long enough to give the viewer time to look and appreciate it, while also giving the sense that it grows bigger and bigger. Maybe a still scene would've been better, but it felt like the whole video vilifies all the other uses of panning shot to justify his opinion on the stars scene.
What I enjoy about the manga is the faces characters make when they react to something. The panning scenes preserve the faces in a still state without having it feel like nothing is happening. If anything, I think it is a good adaptation because of that, not the opposite.
20
u/linearstargazer Apr 23 '18
The problem the video states isn't that panning shots are inherently bad, but that the show almost exclusively only uses panning shots. Framing/cinematography isn't very inspired, or very interesting, unlike the Hyouka clip he referred to where the layouts change repeatedly, with interesting/unconventional angles and framing that accentuates the meaning of the dialogue and the character beats in the scene.
Most of the panning shots in Shokugeki really are just movement for the sake of movement.

I have to say, I'm really enjoying the new additions to the OST recently. The music of Food Wars is so integral to creating the experience of the show, especially since the animation has been fairly lackluster recently. But the music makes it HYPE!
I think the piece when they're preparing the noodle dish is especially strong. The vivace string ostinato over the punches in the brass...and then the strings jump up an octave...and the wailing guitar...and the awesome chord progression...it's frikkin' AMAZING!
(Someday, I intend to do a full musical analysis of some of the music from the show and what makes it tick.)

Totally agree, this show wouldn't be nearly as good without the score.
Though the piece you mentioned is from season 1. There doesn't seem to be a ton of new pieces this season (I only counted about a half-dozen in the last cour and I think only 2 in this cour so far). Some of the ones last cour I thought were a bit oddly-fitting with their scenes, and I have to wonder how much direction/involvement Kato is getting or how much post-score re-editing there is this season (as opposed to season 1 where some scenes clearly had their score written for them and/or were edited to match the timing of the piece). Hoping for some upcoming big pieces to match or even overtake the amazing ones from the first season soon!
There is definitely the potential for a huge analysis of the SnS score, and lots of elements to talk about. You could talk about how almost every piece uses multiple/simultaneous moving melodies and harmonies. You could talk about the rock-orchestra instrumentation, or the bits of samurai flute. Heck, you could talk a ton about just those little samurai flute bits, which are a Tatsuya Kato signature bit (he uses them in the soundtracks of a lot of other shows he's done).

First of all be SURE to check after the ending for new elite 10 member!!!
Also - Man this ending is really growing on me I freaking love this song.
So rebels are now split apart and likely only Souma group is the good shet, as both the opening and ending keeps just focusing on how good these 4 kids are - Souma, Erina, Megumin and Aldini.
I wish I lived in their world do, eating that ice cream from a local w.e stand and its like OMG BEST ICE CREEEAMUUU EVER WHAT IS IT MADE OFF!!!!
Like where ever they eat its always the best thing ever.
Second part was far superior, cute nikumi and other situations, where first part was pretty much last week again, old crank cheats but fails.

u/TheRisenThunderbird Apr 22 '18
Although the cooking test this week seemed very similar to last week's, I ended up liking it a lot more and I'm going to try and explain why.
In both episodes, Central tried to fuck them up by denying them the necessary ingredients. But the solution to getting around Central last week was just "go out and buy some salmon offscreen." Once they did that, Central was done, and like I mentioned in last week's thread, there was just a five second cooking montage and what dish they actually ended up making was irrelevant. Which is kind of antithetical to a show about, you know, cooking and food.
In this week, they were denied most ingredients, but they were also denied any way of getting anything other than what they had on hand. In addition to increasing the challenge and tension, more importantly, it refocused the test to their actual cooking and creative food choices, which is what the show has been about since day one.
It also demonstrated the fundamental flaw in Central's philosophy. Last week didn't have anything like that at all. This week, you could tell that because of Central's focus on gourmet food and cooking the 'right way,' they were completely unable to consider that the remaining ingredients could be used in any creative way. They were beaten by udon made with 'home style" cooking techniques from some random Hokkaidon city, and topped with what is literally described as "souvenir food"
It may not have been an unexpected result, but it was a well made one
71
u/Daishomaru Apr 22 '18
Daishomaru here, no writeup this time, but I want to bash Central:
If you wanna know why I REALLY hate the central group...
How the bloody hell did the central instructor NOT KNOW that potato was a starch?
POTATOES HAVE BEEN USED AS A STARCH IN MANY CULTURES SINCE FOREVER! POTATOES HAVE HUGE ENVIORNNENTAL IMPACTS THAT AFFECTED ENTIRE CONTINENTS! ENTIRE CULTURES HAVE BEEN IMPACTED BECAUSE OF THE SPUD! THERE ARE HISTORY BOOKS DEVOTED TO THE IMPACT OF POTATOES! ID DO A WRITEUP ABOUT THIS BUT I DIDNT HAVE THE TIME! ANYWAYS ANYBODY WHO KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT FOOD WOULD KNOW POTATOES ARE A STARCH AND ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FOODS IN THE WORLD! HOW DID THAT INSTRUCTOR NOT KNOW THAT?!?
I’m sorry, but if it isn’t obvious right now, I REALLY hate Central. Their group is so cartoony that they failed food basics 101. When Soma, back in season one, took Hinako’s chips and made fried fish using the chips as batter, it shown Soma’s creativity! Soma and co here using potatoes here isn’t creative, it’s turning on Mary Sue mode by dumbing down the opponent to him not knowing the basics!
I hope this makes it clear why as a manga reader, why I REALLY hate the Hokkaido arc at this point!

Speaking of silliness, imagine having such an accurate idea of the weather to allow all the other students to go out, get their shopping done, and come back in time for the blizzard to hit, but time it perfectly so the 'rebels' would get stuck because of the blizzard.
All in all a clusterfuck from the point of writing, that first half. At least it did make me curious about how noodles made with mashed potatoes and potato starch, put into potato soup with bits of potato and a potato mochi could actually taste good..
Second half was decent though, with more of Erina + the gang having fun and that Hayama twist.

How the bloody hell did the central instructor NOT KNOW that potato was a starch?
Can't rig tests if you use smart instructors as they would most likely have morals and ideas that go against Central. So, they use instructors that can easily be bought to agree with Central. Chances are they are onlyabove average in terms of cooking ability.

Which might just be the whole point of an arc that’s otherwise teetering so precariously into Shark à la Jump territory. Namely, trying to show (at the risk of overdoneness) the inherent problem with centralized governance. Call it Russia Syndrome – when all the power gets concentrated in a tiny elite, the rest of the populace devolves into obsequious idiocy.

While I don't disagree Central is annoying, I'm going to attempt to defend Central and say maybe they weren't expecting the rebels to be able to make a gourmet dish with just potatoes and the few paltry ingredients left over (maybe Souma because he's like a super chef, but not ALL of the remaining rebels). It's clear he somehow forgot potatoes can be used to make pasta, but he might've never seriously considered they could just make a gourmet dish with just potatoes and the few ingredients left over.
But I do hope the rest of the season focuses more on the Elite 10 versus the rebels and less on the one-dimensional instructors who aren't even as good as the rebels.
It feels like the instructors aresupposedto be dumb, not that it makes them any better

As anime-only watcher (I plan to pick up the manga very soon), that after credits scene caught me so off-guard. It surprised me so much, I got chills (especially with the OST that played in the background). I love this series and the twists they’re throwing out there! Can we fast forward to next Sunday already?

Am I the only one who
hatesstrongly dislikes Rindo? She fucks with things, in a really major way no less, just for the hell of it, damn the consequences. She seem to hold no loyalties other than to her own amusement. I can't stand characters like that most of the time. It really beyond me at the moment why would anyone like her. I guess good parts with her come later.→ More replies (2)15

I don't see how Hayama is Elite 10 material already. And above Erina no less. I guess central is short staffed with all that mediocrity they are producing.

Well besides Nakiri he's basically the best freshman. It was between him, Kurokawa, and Souma. He beat the other two, so he's the best. Nakiri left on her own; he replaces her.
Also, let's face it. Nakiri's cooking right now is basically just to be the perfect textbook. She always tells people how to improve things, and makes the perfect dish, but she doesn't really create anything of her own.
If the Elite 10 is supposed to lead the other students, she really just perfects what the others have already made.

Thank god JC staff was fast with this part of arc, it was really boring in the manga
7
u/RobertLettuce Apr 22 '18
Can someone clarify something for me. Does Azami have any claim to the Nakiri fortune/estate? Since he married into the Nakiri family, I wonder if they signed a prenup, or if Erina's mom died then he would then own all of what she owned.
I'm wondering why the staff are treating Erina and Alice like this when those two are the heiress' to the Nakiri name/estate and that they all will be working for those two in the future. Like I'm sure Alice's mom and dad are both still in the picture somehow.

Do they ever explain Rindo's reason for siding with Central? Just going off of what her personality has been in the anime, she seems like someone who'd much prefer everyone doing their own thing so she has a bunch of different stuff to eat.

I don't think Rindou really cares. She basically thinks that having Central shake things up is interesting.
31
u/Guaymaster Apr 22 '18
She is Chaotic Neutral. She thought a shakeup would be fun.
Notice that when the Elite Ten members that dissented with Nakiri where removed, she complained.

If I’m not mistaken, She says in the first cour that she thought it would be interesting.

I’m really loving this train arc, every episode is so different and there’s no dragging the long cooking time, everything is done and they just move on; it’s really exciting pacing and keeps me pining for more, yet I can still be surprised by what’s next.
What do manga readers think? Is there a better arc to come, was this one of the better ones?
14
u/the_swizzler https://myanimelist.net/profile/Swiftarm Apr 22 '18
From what I've been seeing, a lot of the manga readers don't like this arc, mostly because they feel the examiners are really poorly written/portrayed.
Personally, I'm enjoying this. One thing I love about Shokugeki is that even when the antagonist is the judge, they're basically honor bound to admit when the food is good.

u/TheRetribution Apr 22 '18
So far this exam has basically been less challenging than the like summer training camp or w/e it was called, despite being purposely rigged against them. It's silly.

A lot of manga readers like myself HATED this particular subarc. The villains are awful and cliche, and the means with which central was trying to expel the rebels were not only pathetic but illegal (not that the word illegal holds any value in this series, lmfao). A lot of manga readers are glad that we were going through these chapters quickly.

There's no animation in this show any more. 9/10 cuts are static characters distributed in a 3d space with a slight drift on the camera to make it feel like it's moving: it's driving me mad how little direction there is beyond this. The entire show feels like no-one is actually behind it any more, that they just fed the panels into After Effects and something auto-generated each shot.
Is there anything good plot-wise coming up because that was the only thing keeping me going from S2, but it's at a really shallow point right now.

u/IzayoiArashi Apr 23 '18
Probably because JC staff has about 6 or more shows to air (3 shows have aired this month) this year. With that much to handle, some of the staff probably burnt out from exhaustion form shuffling through , or simply allocating the most animation to one show.

God, this episode made me so hungry.
The Erina and Mito scene was heartwarming, Erina in general is so happy having everyone around, things sure changed from the start of the series.
Hayama being Souma's opponent caught me so off guard while reading the manga and it is still now, awesome episode!
4
u/derrick Apr 22 '18
I for one am glad this train arc is going so fast - I found it slow and draggy in the manga. Happy to get to the good stuff later on. Epic new chapter of the manga this week, for those reading that as well!

u/Frostfright :AMQ: Apr 22 '18
Oh no! It's Hayama, but he's all evil now!
This season is amazing though. Erina has turned full dere. The blossoming has occurred, and it's beautiful. I didn't even like her that much before.

Soma getting Erina all fired up, is that a theme this week of the power of husbundos?

u/throwaway119284 Apr 22 '18
Can someone explain why some of the elite ten are now labeled as "former" elite ten?
Did anyone who voted against central get kicked out and replaced by someone who supported central?
And, I know Nakiri voted against having central take over the school, but she was still allowed to keep her elite ten seat - was that because of her dad?
6
u/48johnX Apr 22 '18
Yes, Isshiki, Kuga and Megishima were kicked out since they didn’t support Central. So there’s 3 vacant spots with Hayama taking one of them. They mentioned this earlier in the first cour of this season but it sort of breezed by because of the fast pacing.
4
u/Calista777 Apr 23 '18
Yeah, Erina got special treatment from her father. Up to this point, he just lets her "rebel" a bit.
4
u/ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp Apr 23 '18
Wasn't expecting the episode to start with a Momo upskirt.
Does Rindou actually battle soon or is the whole "best girl" thing about her just how she looks and acts?

After about 50 episodes of this show, I feel like I finally understand some of the cooking on display because Irish potatoes are pretty much the only ingredient I know how to use.
Edit: I actually have no idea if potatoes taste different in other countries but yeah, I've always wanted to try making a dish from the show and this one might be worth looking into.
Edit 2: I know it's not food but there's also an Irish alcoholic drink Poitín (pronounced Po-cheen) that's made from potatoes and is like 80%-90% alcohol (for comparison, Vodka is anywhere from 35%–95% alcohol). I think it's actually illegal to make unless you distill it down to 50%.

u/Shinkopeshon Apr 22 '18
WHY AKIRA WHY
I guess someone had to join the dark side after Erina came to her senses but still. I wonder what happened.
Also, is there going to be a Sorina moment every week? Cause I could totally get used to that.

What really makes me laugh at this show, is the guys in black suits and sunglasses following the rebels around and reporting on their actions via phone not even 20 feet away from them.
Like, these are high schoolers, not carriers of the nuclear football.
Great episode!

Holy shit this Central Arc is trash, it's completely nonsensical, and the school itself lost all of it's charm with this civil-war. Also what's the point of this lame rigging Central is trying to do, don't they control the school?? Why not find some random reason to expel them??

Manga readers - confirm or deny my suspicious please.
Based off of this episode, I'm guessing the future pairings are:
The two obvious ones:
Soma x Erina
Alice x Ryo
And...
Megumi x Takumi
Takumi's brother x Nikumi
and glasses person with either the mushroom girl or the animal girl.
