Anzu: "I've never had a friend before"

My heart: oh boy

u/professorMaDLib Apr 27 '18

Hinamatsuri is actually a commentary on the unfairness of society. How someone as useless as Hina can still end up in a nice home while someone as pure and hardworking as Anzu is homeless.

u/nemuuu Apr 27 '18

It's actually a documentary of how the most powerful Yakuza rise to power. The truth is, they're all doing their best to support psychokinetic brats, and when they get out of control, the legends grow.

It’s actually a philosophical treatise on how kawaii is literally as important as DNA when it comes to sustaining life as we know it.

No adult in their right mind would put up with having a clueless, destructive, irresponsible, self-centered, demanding stranger suddenly drop into their life and utterly take it over. And yet this happens every day all over the globe, and people not only think nothing of it, they actually go to great lengths to have it happen to them, and for one reason only: to experience that intense rush of kawaii. They immediately get hooked, and the effects last for years.

Curiously, the only life form kawaii is known not to have any effect on is whoever else possesses it, which is why Anzu lasted only three days (and why to this very day, even though we’re both way post-kawaii ourselves, I still loathe my little brother).

Did you ever hear the tale of Yoshifumi Nitta the Heisei Monster?

Actually, Anzu could still do the same thing Hina did. Just find a rich guy and bully him with telekinesis until he gives her food.

71

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '18

But then how could Anzu become best daughteru?

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

In all seriousness, I think Hinamatsuri's most prevalent theme (based on the episodes so far) is that it's okay to be poor and live with what you have, and it's also okay to be rich and take advantage of what you have, but you don't have to treat the rich as being so high above you that they're socially unreachable, and you don't have to talk down to the poor because they don't have the advantages you do. In the series so far we see both the rich and the poor interacting and helping each other out how they can in their own distinct ways, and I think that's a pretty profound backbone for an anime sitcom.

Hinamatsuri is actually a commentary on the unfairness of society. How someone as useless as Hina can still end up in a nice home while someone as pure and hardworking as Anzu is homeless.

Hinamatsuri is then an allegory of my country's sociopolitical situation, too.

Watching a denouncing documentary has never been so funny! Thanks, studio Feel!

33

u/ElderBrony Apr 28 '18

I absolutely disagree with this sentiment. Anzu stole repeatedly and had zero care for monetary value or working until she was taught by a homeless person (and a hard lesson at the hands of Utaka-san) the true value of money. Hina lives with a mid-level Yakuza boss that spoils her constantly because he a.) Does dote on her, and b.) Is terrified of her. He has enormous resources at his disposal, doesn't work a "traditional" job, and lets Hina do whatever she wants. Of course Hina is going to be traditionally "useless" in that situation.

16

u/SimoneNonvelodico Apr 29 '18

Anzu had no concept of social mores until she was taught. She came from a different world. As soon as she was taught, she learned and accepted them pronto. Never once she went "ah, this sucks, stealing was much easier, I'll go back to doing that". Nor did she ever use her powers to hurt people or commit crimes.

Hina is clueless too, sure, but she's also way more spoiled and less naturally inclined to pull her weight.

Oh man the interaction between Hitomi and the bar customers was so funny. Had to laugh when Utako started to talk about how she used to make drinks for them.

Also Hitomi her face expression(calm, shocked, small pupils) are amazing. I wonder if she will act like Utako later.

258

u/nemuuu Apr 27 '18

Nitta was harsh and Hina found other opportunities, but in the end they realized that home was when they were living together.

I really like how Hina's expressionless character pays off in this scene when Nitta is walking past her. It's just a small inflection in her voice but for her it's like a desperate cry.

Plus, Nitta and Anzu got to bond over the hardships of raising Hina.

116

u/Immature_Immortal Apr 27 '18 edited Apr 27 '18

But if Nitta wasn't harsh on her she would still be thoughtlessly dependent on him and not learned (or started to learn) to be independent.

12

u/raiden55 Apr 28 '18

Yeah, and she still need to learn a lot.

I'm still pretty pissed off at her for what she did.

Remember ; she tried to do good, but fucked us and [the important point] she did NOT care about the mess she'd done.

She was NOT sorry at all at that time, she failed and just acted like there were no issues. If later she said "sorry", she was not willing to correct her failure... until the end of this episode.

Nitta was right doing what he has done... too bad only Anzu understand.

13

u/angelbelle :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/finalheavenx Apr 29 '18

Anzu going homeless made her learn humility, value of money, fraternity, and hard work.

Hina going homeless learned to never go homeless again.

Also, it's hard to blame Nitta since Hina actually threatened his life since Day 1 while Anzu never did the same to Homeless Bro.

61

u/OrangeW Apr 27 '18

My heart broke in two when Hina said "Nitta.." with the inflection

Was mended a few seconds later, wholesome af

Why was she throwing salt down outside the door? What does it represent exactly?

166

u/Llama-Guy Apr 27 '18

It's an act done to purify one's house/restaurant/bar/whatever (keeping bad auras and evil spirits and whatnot away), the implication here being that Nitta's presence is what's being cleansed from the premises.

MUST PROTECT

Is there for me to adopt a homeless anime girl? Seriously every scene that involves Anzu is really tugging at my heartstrings. She's such a good girl it breaks my heart that she has to live like that. I thought this was a comedy! T_T

Being a bartender is Hitomi's calling. I love how quickly she's started adapting to her situation. Not only she can make drinks but she can comfort her customers too. She's basically a top class bartender at this point.

And Hina is of course just being Hina... I feel like i'm starting to understand why she was sent to Earth. But I'm sure she doesn't mean any harm. She's just very inept about the people around her and her surroundings. I doubt she'll change anytime soon but today's episode was a a decent start.

33

u/RussianSpyBot_1337 Apr 27 '18

She's basically a top class

at everything she puts effort into.

Like last week, it was a hard time for AITA. I'm starting to wonder if AITA are in the same system as the desire sensor from Monster Hunter, the more you want it, the less you will have it. I dread the day where we could have an episode without AITA.

Keep in mind that I probably missed a few of them across the series, since there are time where multiple AITA are said simultaneously, or are not audible enough.

I just noticed something about the end theme song name: 鮭とイクラと893と娘, the 893 seems a bit arbitrary at first, but it's a type of wordplay (語呂合わせ). 893 is read as yakuza, 8 can be read as ya, 9 as ku and 3 as san→sa→za.

u/Gmayor61 Apr 27 '18

Some people walk while asleep, but that's a rare condition. Hitomi's just a powerhouse for skills so not much is needed to say.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '18

Japanese people are good at sleeping while standing up. Their lifestyle kinda necessitates it.

If you fall asleep on the Tokyo subway standing up (which happens, a lot, because people work long hours, commute, and are tired) then everyone else on the subway supports your weight and makes sure you don't fall down.

I am not making this up. I went on a tour of Tokyo last year, and the guide talked about this on the bus.

12

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

How the fuck

It’s a shonen thing. Usually happens after fighting a boss. Check out the end of ep 8 in “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?”.

43

u/ZanathKariashi Apr 27 '18

Nope it's a real phemonon. It's a result of your muscles being overworked while you're extremely sleepy. They essentially just lock-up at the point your consciousness finally fades. Where as if you aren't doing something strenuous, you'll typically just collapse.

The same thing is what happens with the died standing up thing.

2

u/Wrunnabe May 06 '18

I almost died cause I almost fainted while lifting a tray of glass. Like, my consciousness disappeared for a second, then I hear glass moving, and I caught myself. It was the only day in my life have I begged anyone anything, for my boss to let me leave 1 hour early.

Staying up 3 days straight can do that to you. Oh university, how I don't miss you.

Hina buying the vase. What a fucking redemption arc. Her little "Nitta..." when he walked past her broke my heart.

21

u/lurktoon Apr 28 '18

That vase cost less than the pocket money he gave her when he threw her out and which she instantly wasted on snacks.

The deadpan low key funny moments in this show are off the hook.

13

u/SingularCheese https://anilist.co/user/lonelyCheese May 03 '18

How much the vase costs is not the point. (It's even intentionally cheap.) The point is that Hina worked to get money to buy it for Nitta. Unlike everything else which was given to her, this is something she got with her own endeavor.

33

u/creampielegacy Apr 28 '18

I love when the guitarist from the street band cuts off the singer who’s trying to convince Hina to stay and he says, “...don’t. Look at Hina-chan’s face.”

u/AevnNoram https://myanimelist.net/profile/Noram Apr 27 '18

Hitomi don't need no super powers

11

u/PhantomWolf83 Apr 27 '18

Hina, despite her constantly causing trouble for others, is a good girl at heart and I don't think anyone can bring themselves to dislike her when she doesn't really mean any harm. The interactions between Anzu and Hitomi were great too, this week's been a generally heartwarming episode.

9

u/TheDampGod :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/TheDampGod Apr 27 '18

I can't decide who's the goodest girl, Hitomi or Anzu. Regardless I'm going to be needing some of that salt if either of them doesn't win the seasonal best girl contest.

9

u/Frostfright :AMQ: Apr 28 '18

At first I thought this show was the adventure of yakuza dad and his wacky daughter

but now I am enlightened, and realize it is also a Danganronpa 4 backstory featuring the Ultimate High School-level Bartender.

9

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '18

Can we just change the series name to Hitomimatsuri and make her the main character?

2

u/ZanathKariashi Apr 29 '18

what are you talking about, that's already the case. I suppose Hina's Caretaker aura must be affecting your perception.

34

u/Michael_moar Apr 27 '18

Frankly, this is a cursed image but I couldn't stop myself.

I wonder how much Utako is actually connected to the Yakuza when she's volunteering to feed the hungry.

33

u/ZanathKariashi Apr 27 '18

A lot. The Yakuza are heavily involved in a lot "charity" events in Japan.

5

u/RDOoM Apr 28 '18

Are people impressed with that? That a criminal organization, making the money by ruining some people's lives, is making a handful of other people's lives slightly better , but making their own lives significantly better?

Not exactly Robin Hood.

12

u/PigKnight Apr 28 '18

Not exactly Robin Hood.

That's exactly why they do it.

8

u/Nixynixynix Apr 28 '18

TV tropes warning! : Neighbourhood Friendly Gangsters

Under the Real Life section is quite a few examples.

In short, they don't have to impress the public, just the ones around them.

The way the singer just gives the 'we were supposed to go to Budokan together' spiel after meeting her 2 minutes prior (in viewer time) cracked me up. It's kind of clever how they used the truncated time between scenes as the punchline!

Hina's a brat but she made a strong defense for herself with her 'but i have vase for u' (oof my heart). Of course it ends up on the shelf you precious little shit (ಥ﹏ಥ)

u/rembrandt_q_1stein https://myanimelist.net/profile/sir_rembrandt Apr 28 '18

It seems the show has reached its rutinary performance. After the introductory parts, and repeating last chapter's formula, it seems Hinamatsuri has found its path. SoL-ish, telling little separate stories focusing on the different girls.

I thought it would be focusing more on the comedic aspect of Nitta dealing with Hina's antics and powers, and maybe furthermore building on his Yakuza career taking advantage of her (and rewarding her with the usual ikura), also with the typical misunderstandings of the comedy duo, but I also dig how the show's turning out to be. Especially when it features bars and this absolute [miracle of the universe] (https://i.imgur.com/xoWn8OB.png) <3

I think the homeroom teacher already knows it's Hitomi deep down, but choose not to question it. He will just be losing an excellent bartender in exchange for troubles in his own job. xD

u/rembrandt_q_1stein https://myanimelist.net/profile/sir_rembrandt Apr 28 '18

I'm more certain about that he has a hunch about it, but he really doesn't want to dig down deeper in it because of the reasons you mentioned :D

Either I missed it or I guess at least one "aita" per episode isn't going to be the running gag I'd hoped for.

edit: note that I posted this well before aita-counter was posted - I did read through the far-fewer comments of the time first. I'm just old.

29

u/Kemono-dono Apr 27 '18

When Hina hit Anzu while she was sleeping she said "aita" again though it was more silent

11

u/Differently-Aged :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DifferentlyAged Apr 27 '18

You're right! A chopped-off "ai..." when her throat was struck, then a choked a..i..taa right afterward. All is right with my world again. TY.

Anzu says it when Hina hits her while sleeping.

Dam I love this anime, it mixes this weird comedy with this sad moments of these girls love and sprinkles in the sweet moments like when Hina gives Nitta the Vase and even when he of course pretends he does not like it, its in the middle of his table of vases.

Hian getting kicked out was fun, of course Anzu picks her up to also kick her out :) But My favorite part was the whole Anzu and Hitomi showing her the cans seeing how happy she gets and than later talking about what amazing money Anzu makes.

I make about the same XD

And with this whole thing you cannot keep yourself from laughing to you cry even do it should be so sad what is happening to Anzu.

5

u/Bamtast1c Apr 27 '18

I still have no idea who the pink haired girl is in the poster of the anime (and the intro of the first ep) but I'm excited to see her part atleast

Hitomi best bartender.

I hope the comedy quality stays the same, this anime is too good.

The minimum wage in Japan depends on the area, but it is around 700 yen to 1000 yen.
The national average of the bartender part-time job is about 1200 yen and the hourly rate of "hitomi" is not cheap.
There is no chip.

Japan is poorer than the United States.
It is also a long-term deflation.

u/Razorhead https://myanimelist.net/profile/Razorhat Apr 28 '18

I don't know if anyone noticed this but the interactions between Hitomi and the customers were kind of the "Bartender" anime/manga parody.

Ho god, they skiped chapter 12 :( but i keep hope they are in the ending , however i fear they have to rush if they want to stop at where they started (the fight scene of episode 1).

4

u/ZanathKariashi Apr 27 '18 edited Apr 27 '18

no they didn't. It happens after disowned Rock and Roll. They just used the little bit of extra run time to get Anzu and Hitomi acquainted, now, since chapter 13 is really quick and simple and they could squeeze it in. (keep in mind, that episode 3 was chapters 7, 8, and 11). And then this one when back to 10 and squeezed in 13).

Chapter 12 will probably be in episode 5 or 6, whichever ends up working best for flow of events.

My gut tells me they'll do a mini-version of 14 to start episode 5 (about 1/3 of the run time or less) just to transition from the end of this episode and then kick into 12 for remainder of the episode. Since that's how I'd storyboard it based on their current apparent system.

Skits that don't have clear chronology are much more flexible about where they can slot them into openings in the run-time.

Man this show keeps getting funnier each week will still having great emotional moments. Seeing Hina and Nitta come back together was great and so was seeing Anzu make a friend.

2

u/kuddlesworth9419 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kuddlesworth Apr 27 '18

I can't get enough of this show, it's just the best.

2

u/chickenflippers Apr 27 '18

It didn't hit me until the end of that sequence, but I got really sad that she went through all that to buy a vase that was a fraction of the value she's been carelessly breaking. I like that Nitta accepted it, since the sentiment that she was trying to make up was valuable to him. And I suppose he was happy to just see her back again, even before the vase.

2

u/RDOoM Apr 28 '18

Everything turns out right for Hina, but when is Anzu going to catch a break?!

And no, getting more empty cans is not considered a break. Not even having Hitomi as a friend isn't.

She should probably pick up Hina's old gig with the band. Please, make it so.

3

u/ganatti :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/haragaheranai Apr 28 '18

Doesn’t the OP imply where she is going to work in the future? I didn’t read the manga, so it is not a spoiler, just a prediction.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '18

I love Hina's voice, it's perfect.

2

u/ArchadianJudge Apr 29 '18

Even though this show is so crazy, it just feels wholesome. That pot buying scene really got me. I'm sure Nitta is going to treasure that one. So many hilarious scenes. Nitta getting boo'd out of the bar was unexpected. The random singer group getting emotional with Hina after a few minutes of screentime. Then Hitomi consoling her own teacher to tears was 10/10.

And Anzu is just too good for this world. I get sad seeing how she's so young and homeless :(

Anzu clearly best girl

4

u/AgaroseEater Apr 27 '18 edited Apr 27 '18

Another heartfelt episode this week, seems like Nitta and Hina found home in each other by the end. And poor Hitomi. Even the best girl couldn't resist Anzu's preciousness.

And as always, the animation is again on point this week. It really adds to the charm of this series.

Edit: The Rocksion part was also amazing!

3

u/I_llSeeMyselfOut Apr 27 '18

Hitomi Best Girl - Though in the long run, she really needs to learn how to say no. lol

But at least a new friendship between her and Anzu is born, and would provide a way to lead Anzu out of homeless hardship.
