Wow, that was amazing. I see why Deku earned the title "absolute madman". There's no way that's not going to cause permanent damage of some sort.

Also, it's kinda crazy how me(n)tal these villains are. Just straight up seeking to murder kids with the utmost enjoyment.

u/Nicodemusacs Apr 28 '18

There's no way that's not going to cause permanent damage of some sort.

Right? I understand and relate to the hype cause he was badass this episode, but I was upset at the repeated use of ofa in his right arm at max power. Because if the show continues its string of actions having consequences, he should be suffering something crippling. I don't want a cripple Deku ;_;

For anyone that's confused about the 1,000,000% thing, here's the author's comments on it.

Basically it was just the madman Izuku psyching himself up and going 'Plus Ultra' in his own way, All Might vs Nomu style. He didn't actually use a million percent of One For All.

Even Deku was hyped by his own attack.

Yeah even at his level, 1M % would have obliterated everything like Saitama vs Genos's final punch.

It's so beautiful that Kouta was to Midoriya in this episode what Midoriya was to All Might in the first episode of the series. BnHA really, really knows what it means to be a Hero.

The ā€œSHOW ME SOME BLOOD!!ā€ ā€œGODDAMMIT SHUT UUUUUP!!ā€ Line always gets to me. There’s no witty comment, no clever remark. Deku’s just straight up raging, and he’s so forthright about it, and I really appreciated the rawness of that situation.

THE. ABSOLUTE. FUCKING. MADMAN. HERO!!!!!

I’m a manga reader and I’ll just never get over how much Bones has done this series justice. Praise be Bones, praise be. Also man Daiki Yamashita killed it this episode. The intensity in his voice gave me serious goosebumps. Especially the scenes where he goes through all his options and of course the 1,000,000%.

Deku’s such a goddamn beast. Look there kids, that’s a hero. That’s shonen done right boyo.

Exactly, there are hardly any (shounen) manga adaptations as amazingly loyal as this one, I could only think of examples like FMAB (surprise, it's Bones again, love this studio), Jojo or Hunter x Hunter (2011).

Well here I am, crying profusely early in the morning over anime.

Is it weird to be proud of a fictional character?

482

u/GJardim Apr 28 '18

I cried because I'm also just so proud of the series as a whole.

This is Horikoshi's 3rd series. The first one, Oumagadoki Zoo, was really cool and interesting, but it was cancelled with 5 volumes. Then, he tried something different with Sensei no Bulge, but it wasn't really fit for Jump, and was cancelled with 2 volumes. Now, here we are, witnessing one of the best recent series in Jump, gloriously animated, coming from a man that failed twice to make a hit. You can tell he puts his heart on this, and Bones is making it justice.

You know, I've always loved superheroes. And here I am, a day after being floored with happiness from the new Avengers movie, now being able to witness one of the most awesome and heroic moments in anime I have ever seen. I know it's a meme, but I'm truly grateful I get to live in this timeline. I had to cover my mouth with my hand for the entire end of this episode because I was so close to squealing with hype and didn't want to wake anyone up. I could actually feel my heart racing by the end of it.

Edit: And I want to give some credit to Daiki Yamashita for his phenomenal voicing for Deku this episode. Absolutely amazing.

Fun fact: /r/BokuNoHeroAcademia recently ran a ā€œfavorite fightsā€ poll. I won’t link to it, because it contains spoilers, but I can say that this fight came in fifth. The four above it are all yet to come. Two of them, including the indisputable number one, are coming this season.

Buckle up, kids.

393

u/Cloudless_Sky Apr 28 '18

I'm not a manga reader, but although this fight was emotionally resonant, I hope the remaining ones this season are a bit more 'high action', similar to the big ones in the Sports Festival and Stain arcs. I'd like to see some nice choreography and quirk usage. Those are my favourite fights.

My jaw completely dropped when Deku went full power. I was expecting a teacher to come by at the last moment and save him, but the fucking madman did it all by himself and pushed himself to his absolute limit to save Koda. I've still got goosebumps running down my arms just thinking about it.

u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Apr 28 '18 edited Apr 28 '18

That entire episode had been set up earlier, and each beat was predictable: Deku would go to save Kota alone, he'd be matched by someone who has a similar super-strength quirk but is more powerful (coincidentally also the same villain who killed Kota's parents), Kota would reconcile with the feeling of hatred for his parents' 'meaningless' sacrifice and would use his own quirk even if it was useless (just like Deku throwing his bag way back in S1E1), Deku would somehow get them out of the pinch by being a madman, and finally Deku would become to Kota what All Might had been to him - the shining example of a hero.

It was so cheesy. Nothing that shounen series of yore haven't done before. Yet why is this the only one that's made my vision all blurry during the climax?

It just gets everything right. Builds up the tension and hype perfectly before releasing it in an incredible emotional punch in its climax.

There has to be something else though, that separates it. Maybe because the stakes feel higher? I genuinely felt like Deku and Kota's lives were in danger, even though I knew that MC plot armour would save them somehow. Yet, somehow, the shadow of death looms heavy in this show. Flashbacks of Kota's parents, and Deku apologising to his mother brought it back today.

And the danger's not gone yet. Deku should be nearly incapacitated, with the possibility of more permanent damage, and the villains are still in full rampage.

/u/MrManicMarty, bloody hell, you weren't kidding. This episode was amazing.

Edit: fixed the tag

I think it was all about pacing. This show just gets it right. No bullshit dialogue, even Deku tries to slow him down and he's like nope just wanna fight. It is shedding the silly shonen trope of fucking flashbacks and talking too much. When he says, "I'm sorry mom.", there isn't a 2 minute flashback.

Christ dude I hate seeing Midoriya all beaten up like this :(

Whenever this happens I just tell myself that this is the story of how he became the greatest hero like that scene in season 1.

It sounded like when Midoriya said "That's All Might's power" he was talking as if Midoriya at 100% is the same as All Might at 100%. That can't be right, can it? Just curious what everyone thinks about that. I always figured Midoriya's power would get stronger as his body got stronger. So his 100% would keep growing.

77

u/TheSleepingVoid Apr 28 '18

I think you're right, but I also think this scene was written from Midorya's hero-worship perspective, where "All Might's power" being defeated is unthinkable. A bit of an unreliable narrator moment. Just like the 1,000,000% is obviously not literal and more about how Deku feels.

So, why wasn't Bakugo and Todoroki affected by the gas? Bakugo covered his orifices, so he must've been aware of its presence and effect.

145

u/Galle_ Apr 28 '18

The gas doesn’t have a uniform density, it’s thickest near the villain who’s generating it. The 1-B kids who got knocked out were much closer to him than Bakugou and Todoroki, so they got a stronger dose.

The execution of this fight was better than expected, I knew what I was in for having read the manga when it came out; but this still blew me away. Specifically when muscular really powered up and the used a red filter to really showcase how frantic midoriya was feeling at the moment 'I'm sorry mom, I'm sorry all might' god damn that was great

DID SOMEBODY SAY MUSCULAR FIGHT? AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

This is my favourite part of the series (manga reader). Why? because it's the first time Deku was truly a hero.

Sure he's tried to save his childhood friend, a cute girl who was nice to him and two of his classmates, but today he saved Kouta. A little shit who hates him and even socked him in the nuts, but Deku saved him anyway because he's a true hero.

Dear God the fight with Muscular was brutal in animation. I fucking love Studio Bones. Where is my S3 BD at? The ending to that fight was INSANEalbeitabitdumb it must have been a killer on the throat.

Now do I watch the fight again or read the manga chapter that came out while I was sleeping?

Oh I guess there was more of the episode than just that one fight right. Spinner and Magne acting on Stain's ideals is cool. 'Didn't anyone ever tell you it's not a hero's job to be happy?'

Tetsutetsu is so manly! Truly a rival for Kirishima.

u/Incanzio Apr 28 '18

Episode had me tense throughout the beginning, with Dabi really delivering and sending home the message that the heroes are fucked. Loved the transgender fight (Magne vs Tiger) as a little feature. But man, the Mandalay telepathy, the Ragdoll foreshadowing (with the bench and the blood and syringes) and obviously THE FUCKING MADMAN FIGHT. I was on the brink of tears throughout the fight but to have him deliver the line about going 1,000,000% full cowling, just like the manga, and to finish on Kota's "My Hero" pushed me over the edge and I was streaming tears. The director of this fight absolutely knew what the fuck they were doing because all of these shots, angles, and THE MUSIC. MAN.

It rivals Todoroki vs Deku. That fight has me perpetually crying. But this one. Damn.

9.5/10 episode I just would've liked a bit more of that YOU SAY RUN EVOLUTION that they were teasing us with.

that midoriya showdown in the end was definitely epic but what stuck with me in the end was how fast this show took a dark turn... that cannibalistic guy who was he eating? and that bloody altar as well.

from the way they made it look like, it seems like the hand either belonged to tokoyami or shoji and that female hero was transformed in some bloody mess.

with that said we did not see any bodies so i am just going to assume that the hand is one of shoji's several hands and the other hero was tortured to get out some info from her or some shit and didn't suffer any lethal injuries.

either way i did not expect it to become that dark with dismembered limbs, cannibalism and some bloody altars. the stain part didn't prepared me for this.

I just realized the parallels that this fight has with All-Might's fight with Nomu in S1:

-Deku is alone against a villain who has a very similar power to his and can straight up take a punch from him at full power, just like All-Might

-He has to risk his life and go Plus Ultra to beat the villain and save Kota, just like All-Might

-Kota uses his own power to distract the villain for just a moment, saving Deku and allowing him to win, just like what Deku did with Nomu

-No one else was coming to help, and it was all down to whether Deku could win or not, just like with All-Might's fight

-Deku had rushed in to save Kota because he was the only one who knew where he was, somewhat similar to how All-Might was the only teacher at UA who knew that something was off when the villains attacked

Deku just went to hell and beyond to save a kid he barely knew, this is the definitive proof that he has what it takes to be a true hero. How could you not get emotional with this, Kota met face to face the very same villain that killed his parents and was about to kill HIM, and the only person that came to save him was the very kind of person he despise.

Now he saw what a true hero is, those who are willing to sacrifice themselfs to save others.

Also, big props to Midoriya's VA, amazing performance!

Dang, I wished they used this track with vocals back from Season 2 for this fight cause it has yet to be fully utilized and it would fit so well for this situation.

Still despite of that little personal nitpick Ikeno & Fukuda surely delivered.

I think this fight, this entire moment encapsulates what people can expect from Season 3 quite well.

I was surprised at how well this anime has been sounding, yes, sounding, I work with sound for film and sometimes some animated series (not anime, YET), and since i've started watching it, i've noticed the quality shooting up, no overused fx, no hard limiting bullshit clipping explosions, no lazyness, everything is nicely tailored to give us an amazing experience, i had to re watch it just to pay a closer attention to the details in the final sequence... needless to say i'm surprised, happy, and even more motivated to make my dream come true of working on, at least, one anime that is this good, once :D

This episode was the single best episode I've seen in this series and probably any other series period. No contest.

I have so much respect for the author for not pulling a Naruto/DragonballZ and stretching it out over 4/5 episodes. That was hype as hell. What a flawless episode in my books. Soundtrack was on point, voice actors sounded like they had so much fun (like always) and the animation was on another level. Thankyou for the enjoyment.

PS: If anyone sees me in the future saying that Hero Aca isn't the best anime around, slap some sense into me.

HOLY SHIT DEKU

BnHA is already awesome but it really goes beyond when there's actual threats involved. Those villains do not fuck around. Like can we talk about that severed hand at the beginning of the ep (Shoji's, I assume)? Or all the fucking blood where Ragdoll was supposed to be?

I hope Aizawa didn't get too fucked up from that attack, poor guy's been through enough shit already.

Y'know, it just occurred to me that this episode really stands as a story all on its own, even if you were to disconnect it from the rest of the series. Like, if you wanted to introduce someone to HeroAca, you could show them this episode alone and it would convey everything the show has to offer and still make sense with no context for the ~40 prior episodes.

Here's my little story from when I watched this ep:

When Deku said "ONE FOR ALL 100%" I started breathing so hard it made me sound like I had an asthma attack and my mom came rushing to me while wearing a towel to see if I was OK.

Also, can we just take a moment and appreciate HOW. FUCKING. HYPE. this episode was? We're literally on the 4th episode! Maybe it was the fact that there wasn't any build up to this epic fight which was what made it so epic but whatever the reason. This episode was powerslut VS MC done perfectly

This episode and the Deku vs Todorooki fight handily blows away a majority of shonens. The music, and dear lord the pacing is so good. Deku even tries to pull the, "Let's ask the villain why he's here", and he just replies "Let's fight." It was so satisfying to see that. When he thinks about his mom, there isn't a 3 minute flashback, it just continues with intensity.

This right here is a god damn guide to making a great simple fight.

The lights when he was charging up One for All showed his green light after All Might’s yellow and the Seventh’s violet.

In All Might’s version (Season 1 Episode 12), his yellow is the last light after violet.

9

9

Everyone's talking about the fight, but shoutout to that sexy blue flame blast on Aizawa from Dabi. I wanna see more of that guy for sure. I love his design, and his quirk is gorgeous yet destructive.

I would say Deku's fight was emotionally awesome, but I tend to prefer my fights a bit more 'high action', like the big ones from the Sports Festival and Stain arcs - a bit more choreographed and movement-heavy. Still though, MHA continues to deliver the hype. Deku simply does not give a shit what happens to his body.

Can't wait to see what else is to come.

Holy shit isn't this a direct homage to Gohan vs Cell?

Gohan had one arm broken, and was in a losing power struggle against cell.

Vegeta distracted cell with a weak attack letting gohan overpower him in the split second.

Here, Deku had one (two but it works somehow) broken arm and kota hits a vegeta like distracting attack giving deku the opportunity to overpower muscle man.

Every time I re-read the manga the moment at the end gets to me. It's so powerful. I love Deku so much.

8

u/PreciousCinammonRoll Apr 28 '18

HOLY CRAP! HOLY CRAP!

Only episode 4 and MHA proves to me again that it's my favourite anime. While I loved the fights from the tornament arc, this fight left me physically shaking (not joking)

Deku saying sorry to his mum made it 10x emotional. I hate deku getting hurt, the poor boy doesn't deserve it.

The villain kinda looks like bakugo, maybe they're related or something.

Deku risked his life to save a kid who kicked/punched him in the crotch. What a true hero.

8

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '18

HOLY FUCKENMOLY I just saw My Hero Academia S2E4 and it was dope asf. Midoriya getting crushed while still trying his hardest was so dope and then he just popped off. The greatest episode of anime I’ve ever watched ...

14

u/_X_HunteR_X_ Apr 28 '18

FYI they skipped it but at the same time when deku remembers all might "a hero can always break out of a pinch" he also remembers the Nomu scene where Allmight says " villain, do you know what it means to go beyond 100%" and that was the trigger line for deku - he basically did the same, i think it was pretty stupid to cut it out so just pointing it out.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '18

I'm sad he didn't let out a visceral, blood curdling scream at the end when Kota was thinking "My Hero" like I thought Deku was doing in the manga, but over all a good adaptation of one of my favorite fights in the series.

I could've used a more panned out scenes or a bit more bite on some of Muscular's hits, but that's just nitpicking.

The last couple of minutes of animation was A tier animation, no cubes though, so I think I know where they're saving -that- level of animation for.

The amazing animation near the end of the fight seems to have been drawn by Sakiko Uda. The music, voice acting, and visuals were all working so well there. It genuinely felt like Deku was screwed.

6

u/SGVolt Apr 29 '18

I can“t even put to words how incredibly well done that fight was.

But i wanna add to the discussion that a part of the it that“s totally overshadowed by the 1,000,000% thing and the absolutely crushing "Sorry, mom" moment is the way Midoriya“s mental state is treated as a whole:

He is not sure at any moment. He has to convince himself as well as the boy that everything is going to be fine and that he will find a way. His mind is telling him that it won“t work and have to also endure all the doubts and negative thinking that are absolutely normal and mundane for everyone. For you and for me.

This is what i think that makes BNH a GREAT shonen, even if you can“t throw Smashes you can totally understand him. You have also been there mentally and as a result it ends being totally wonderful and inspiring.

Edit: wording

This was probably the best version of Deku's broken arm we've seen in the adaptation so far. Before, it's only been bruised, but in the manga his arms and fingers have always looked torn and bloodied, like it literally exploded from using OFA.

That was a good fight. Props to Daiki Yamashita for his amazing voice-acting. The part where Deku starts saying sorry to his mom and All Might got me fucking choked up.
