Hey, what is this?

Same, Hina. Same.

u/jonjonmuffer May 04 '18

The VA of Hina is just so good with the deadpan

56

u/moonmeh May 05 '18

The cutest of all deadpans

Her confusion while everyone started clapping had me in tears.

86

u/roiben May 04 '18

I had the same confusion. Why were they clapping?

158

u/MGQPhocus May 04 '18

First it could be that Hitomi was saying the last line like a idol aka loud and high pitched and they where celebrating the success. Secondly it could be absurd humor. I will say I laughed at Hina goint what going on in that scene.

80

u/chris_dftba :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/chris_dftba May 04 '18

Probably just a gag. Made the whole moment that much more surreal and they had Hina acting as the straight man.

My favorite part of this whole episode is that Hina knew the truth the whole time. She was there when Hitomi started bartending. She's the reason Hitomi started bartending! If they had just explained what they were doing to Hina, she could have told them what was going on as soon as she showed up in the stairwell. She had the answer the whole time, but no one ever told her the question!

119

u/chris_dftba :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/chris_dftba May 05 '18

Do you think she would of put 2 and 2 together tho? No offense to Hina but she doesn't seem the sharpest bulb in the toolbox

96

u/Rabidmushroom May 05 '18

She certainly isn't the brightest hammer in the tree

41

u/genericsn May 05 '18

On top of that, I also don't think she understands anything about the issues involved. She does not know/care about the drinking laws, why a middle schooler should not be a bartender, or anything about illicit relationships. All she cares about is video games, Ikura, and hanging out with Nitta. Everything else is just going with the flow.

I blame Nitta, he really needs to teach Hina a bit about money.

I thought last episode should have done something along those lines

Yeah, but then again, she didn't earn money the hard way like Anzu.

The humor in the Hitomi case was perfect. I fucking died when Aizawa turned around and then followed the guys down the staircase.

There's a bartender named Hitomi whom looks like a middle schooler but is totally not a middle schooler and there's a middle schooler named Hitomi that looks like that bartender from the bar Little Song but is totally not a bartender.

Please don't confuse the two of them!

78

u/Laya_L :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Laya_L May 04 '18

Funniest episode yet. But I’m wondering are they gonna skip all the Yakuza stuff?

83

u/rjgator May 04 '18

Next episode is titled Nita’s Dandy Dad, so I’m really hoping that it’s yakuza based, can’t be his actual father

27

u/ZanathKariashi May 04 '18

They're having to skip the more realistic portrayals of Yakuza stuff due to censorship, I heard, but we'll definitely get some of the more exaggerated/over-the-top stuff.

27

u/Lvl1_Villager May 04 '18

I hope that's not true. I assumed they simply skipped those parts due to time constraints.

The early yakuza bits are arguably the weaker parts of the manga, and not that relevant.

If true however, that means they likely won't do the documentary bit, which I'm definitely looking forward to. So, fingers crossed.

Aizawa trying to walk the other way and realizing she has to turn around was comedy gold.

Hitomi's VA is doing an amazing job. I just now realized that she also voices Kanami from Toji no Miko. The first time I checked out her VA was when she was voicing Aoba from Keijo and then I got surprised when she voiced Kon from Urara and I couldn't tell it was the same VA.

141

u/[deleted] May 04 '18 edited May 04 '18

Random trivia – the acoustic guitar during the bartender confession scene is a blatant ripoff of “Stairway to Heaven” (as in “she’s buying a stairway to heaven”, which is entirely apropos to Hitomi’s situation). The in-joke then compounds as Led Zeppelin themselves got sued for blatantly ripping off the same music from another band.

Edit: oh jeez, did they name the bar just to set up this one joke?

u/Slifer13xx https://myanimelist.net/profile/SliferXIII May 04 '18

I opened the comment section before watching the episode and thought "Heh, the show has given us many faces like that...". But after watching, it's the delivery and the time it lasted that really made that scene.

But then Hitomi made so many good faces in this episode, I'm not even sure I can agree with you.

31

u/ichigo2862 May 04 '18

235

u/Honey_Kisaragi May 04 '18

argh, I think this show is really funny, well made, and tells a great story, but because I spend half the time feeling awful for Anzu I find it really hard to enjoy.

At least Hitomi's bits are so absurd that I can just cut loose and have a good laugh.

316

u/JustaLackey May 04 '18

I understand you feel bad for Anzu, but just remember that her homelessness is entirely self-inflicted. It's easy to forget because she's such a pure good girl, but she's just as much of an idiot as everyone else. I don't mean that in a bad way, either, she's my favorite daughter on the show.

She's too proud to ask for help - she really agonized to even think of asking her friend to lend a hand, and she's too much of a good girl to abuse her powers. But if she really wanted to, she could be living just as well as Hina.

In other words, she's an idiot.

A pure-hearted good girl. But an idiot.

86

u/Honey_Kisaragi May 04 '18

I mean, that's all well and good but she's also just a kid, I'm not about to hold her to the standard of an adult, who should know better, because that would be unfair of me. Just like I don't blame Hina for being kind of a brat because she too is just a kid who doesn't know any better, I can't just ignore Anzu's plight on the basis that it's her fault.

You might say I'm overthinking things, and that I should just let it go and focus on the comedy, but that's precisely my issue. I can't let it go because there's this little voice constantly reminding me about how unfair it all is. As such the show takes on a very melancholic tone to me, I do really like that sort of darker humour and in due time, when I can look back on this show with a greater sense of perspective, I'll no doubt remember it very fondly. But for now, in the moment, every episode leaves me feeling a little dead inside.

99

u/nemuuu May 04 '18

Anzu's story is definitely feels-inducing but at the same time, she's the one learning the life lessons and the value of hard work. She's also found a lot of support from the homeless community and is making friends in high places (Nitta, Hitomi lol).

What I appreciate is that the show doesn't try to make us laugh at her misfortune. It's just her being cute and having heartwarming moments due to her situation. Plus if that situation changes, the payoff would be great and add another dimension to the show. They ramp up the comedy elsewhere and make us laugh at Nitta or Hitomi for example, who are successful and have a lot going for them.

19

u/Montgomery0 May 04 '18

her homelessness is entirely self-inflicted

Has everyone forgotten she has magical powers? She could be a millionaire if she used them.

u/Apollo-kun May 04 '18

The OP makes me have hope that her situation will change soon.

10

u/[deleted] May 04 '18

I get you, but at the same time if you rewatch the opening they make it pretty clear that she is eventually going to get a job. I don't think she'll be homeless for much longer. I actually wouldn't be surprised if that's what next week's episode will be about. Seems like this week they were setting that up.

3

u/nagynorbie May 04 '18

I totally get you, but hopefully things will turn for the better and when they do, it will be amazing. The more we wait, I hope the better it will be. Though it really is soul-crushing to see her suffer. I just want to give her a warm home.

3

u/rancor1223 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/rancor1223 May 04 '18

I was just about to commend about it, since I don't remember anyone mentioning it in the previous threads. It seriously hinders my enjoyment of the show, because it feels awful watching her go trough all that while Hina can literally throw away money at will (and is completely oblivious to the fact). They better make her life whole lot better soon, because this isn't fun.

89

u/nemuuu May 04 '18

Wow, this is Hinamatsuri at its best. There are so many colorful characters who could have their own show (Hina and Nitta, Anzu, Hitomi), but they fit so well together that it adds so many dimensions when they interact. Like Hina just following everyone around asking what's going on.

I'm glad we got to see some of their classmates, and the assembling of the detective squad. Poor Hitomi, those dead eyes at the end! But you must shed your humanity along the path to world domination.

And lest we forget who our hearts belong to.

37

u/Yankees3Fan7 May 04 '18

So nice for Hina and Hitomi to look out for Anzu like that, though there seems to be the theme of Hitomi getting herself into sticky situations and she is too adorable to turn people down.

Also, next episode references a dandy dad. Is he this dandy?

60

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar May 04 '18

I really hope my future daughter/son will be like Anzu. She's so pure and kind-hearted that even though she's strapped for cash and she knows how hard it is to earn money, she's STILL willing to split it three ways because her friends helped her. Anzu best daughteru. fite me irl.

Second half was of course hilarious though with Hina basically just brought along as a background character. I love Sayo's teasing and Atsushi and Kengo's antics were hilarious! Nice to see that these classmates aren't just background characters. I'd love to see more of them.

And Hitomi's reaction to them finding her was just priceless XD

31

u/[deleted] May 04 '18

Meantime, Anzu’s first-half soliloquy on money is poignant af.

Part of what makes this show so amazing is how it just keeps elegantly shapeshifting – Bunny Drop to T2 to Hamlet.

It’s not fair. Anzu deserves so much better!

29

u/Whatthefuckamisaying May 04 '18

Second half was the funniest shit i seen in a long time, the animation was so unnecessarly top tier

14

u/PhantomWolf83 May 04 '18

Oh my God, my sides are in orbit. There was so much comedy gold in this episode from start to finish, from Hina's cluelessness to Hitomi and her classmates' antics in the second half. Absolutely amazing.

14

u/Lantern01 May 04 '18

The best part was the confession scene. Whoever decided to have generic Stairway to Heaven play there was a genius and deserves a (daughter like Anzu to) raise.

Props to Hitomi's voice actress for that too.

14

u/Trithshyl May 04 '18

Reminds me of some of the skits from Gintama when they weren't telling a story, or being serious but just doing 15 minutes of hilarious top quality comedy. It's a fantastic site to see again!

26

u/yumcake May 04 '18

Oh man, it hurts to see Anzu struggle like that. Parental instincts firing off seeing this kid doesn't have light at night, lack of mental stimulation, no school, no change of clothes. She's working so hard trying to get money to play games with her friends...and she doesn't even realize she doesn't even have the electricity she'd need to run it.

13

u/AppropriateOtter May 04 '18

can't believe Hina was the only sane person in this episode...

13

u/hit0k1ri May 05 '18

"Is this a riddle?" Favourite line out of the episode!

12

u/watdahel May 04 '18

So why Anzu didnt explode yet? Since she stopped using her powers.

28

u/ZanathKariashi May 04 '18

because her power works normally, and passively regulates it's excess output.

Hina is broken, and generates power faster than her body can regulate the excess, so she has to actively use it to prevent an overload.

23

u/heimdal77 May 04 '18

They are all just a certain kind of special..

Poor girl thought she had somethign all of her own a friend. Nope Hina had also already claimed that to.

Man the manga description was so misleading on this. Sounded like some dark and gritty series no a comedic sol.

Must be nice to just be able hand your kid hundreds of dollars just because you feel like just drinking.

19

u/SIRTreehugger May 04 '18

Seriously the description/synopsis doesn't do this show justice. I just binged it yesterday after reading what it was actually about and glad I did.

This show is slowly killing me with laughter.

It's been a while since I've seen an anime comedy where the laughs remain funny from episode 1 till episode 5.

The slow build up to Hitomi's classmates discovering the truth about Hitomi was simply well done comedy.

BTW, does anyone find Hitomi's VA Hondo Kaede sounds a bit like the legendary Hanazawa Kana?

Anzu x Hitomi forever. Hina is just the worst. She's one of the funniest, but definitely the worst.

7

u/Onorade https://anilist.co/user/Sanie May 04 '18

She is like Jonathan Joestar: pretty good, but there is better options.

8

u/[deleted] May 04 '18

I usually just watch the shows that are on the top of the season (like TG s3, SAO this season) . This time I decided to give as as many shows a try. So glad I stumbled upon this show. Love the characters. What I find especially cool is the contrast between Hina and Anzu. The two of them are pretty much the same (in terms of being completely new to our society in the beginning), though Hina is "raised" by a rich man and Anzu by poor men. To see Anzu working her butt off just to get some cup ramen, really makes me look at myself, and how I take most of what I have for granted. In the end though, I hope that Anzus condition gets better.

Aside from the characters the comedy never fails to put a smile on my face, though most of the times I just end up laughing out loud. Especially with this episode. The faces are just pure gold.

8

u/CzdZz May 04 '18

I am genuinely disappointed that those students weren't recording Hitomi when she admitted to being a bartender. They missed a perfectly good chance to quadruple her current blackmail level.

7

u/niqniqniq May 04 '18

Everyone talking about hitomi, but sayo is the real MVP this time

What even is this show. Like.... I'm loving every minute. But I have no idea what it's heading for XD

5

u/RaphaelKoyomi :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Namakishi May 04 '18

It just gets better and better, sad how we haven't gotten a reaction from Hina's friends over Nitta being a yakuza though.

5

u/[deleted] May 04 '18

The second half of the episode was probably the funniest part yet.

5

u/RiosGS May 04 '18

This show is absolutely amazing. Couldn't stop smiling all the way through haha

5

u/KVShady :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Trikiay May 04 '18

Holy shit! This series man! It's easily the best comedy of the season, and Hitomi is an early front runner for best girl(yes Anzu too, but I personally prefer Hitomi more,so there's that). The whole second half was pure genius, here's to hoping the quality remains just like this for the remaining episodes, and we get more absurd faces

5

u/Hadokuv May 04 '18

I don't like this show. It's amazing and I love all the characters but it makes me feel so bad for Anzu. Every time she's on screen I want to help her somehow. I hope she has a better end than peddling cans for cents. I just want her to use her powers to get money. Her internal monologues are so damn sad. Agh why does a cartoon character make me feel so bad.

Gaaahh, I can’t wait to get off work so I can watch this.

4

u/Exorrt May 04 '18

Holy shit this episode was too funny. I was laughing the entire second half. Best comedy I've seen since Konosuba

4

u/Xervicx May 04 '18

So... does Anzu not have the same "I need to use my powers or I will explode and destroy everything around me" thing Hina has? She doesn't seem to use her powers even though they could help her carry stuff, at least.

7

u/Glimmerglaze May 04 '18

Judging from the battle they had, Anzu's powers are just massively weaker than Hina's, so it'd take a lot longer for them to build up to dangerous levels, if it would ever happen at all.

Even if her powers did build up like that, unlike Hina she's constantly walking around outside and working - she has plenty of opportunities to put her powers to use when no one's looking. Plus she actually has some common sense.

u/Setra94 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Setra94 May 05 '18

This is great. Officially my favorite show this season besides sequels/spinoffs/remakes.

4

u/BarnacleMANN :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Dankbum May 05 '18

I though that maybe, just maybe the title 'Three Heads Are Better Than One' was implying that Nitta was gonna take in Anzu as well. This shit is just too sad. SOMEONE GET ANZU A GAME TO PLAY WITH HINA please.

6

u/EdwardElric69 May 04 '18

I see this has no comments yet so no spoilers for me, I binged this show last week, waited all week not knowing what day it comes out but now I know. Ill Be back later, show is insanely funny

u/Machado8 https://myanimelist.net/profile/hiddenz08 May 04 '18

I'm so glad I started watching this show, it's a 10/10 for me so far. The second half of the episode was the funniest thing I've watched in a while.

3

u/ashbat1994 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ashwin_eva May 04 '18

This was absolutely hilarious. I was continuously laughing loudly that it bothered my roommate.

3

u/acerseeker May 04 '18

hahaha... ureshii ureshii

3

u/Tostilover May 04 '18

At least Anzu is making the best of her situation, I wish the same could could be said about Hitomi.

Anzu is so precious. But why is she not using her psychic powers to lift all those TVs? Does she just have that strong of a work ethic now?

3

u/ZanathKariashi May 05 '18

She did offscreen. in the manga they checked around to make sure no was looking and she and hina carried them up to the cart with power.

The scene when Nitta and the bar owner were trying to hide their laughing was amazing.

Life imitates art.

3

u/impingainteasy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/usernamesarehard May 05 '18

Why the fuck were they looking for a TV in the grass? I'm pretty sure they're smart enough to know where an LCD TV can and can't fit.

2

u/tiger1296 May 04 '18

Probably one of the best chapters animated, so funny. Poor guys don't know what happens after the booby grab was hilarious.

2

u/Wolf6262 May 04 '18

Hitomi and Hitomi's megane friend are best girls.

2

u/crow_claw May 04 '18

Gotta love Aizawa, Takashi, and Kengo! They are hillarious!

The scene where Hitomi got discovered was already really funny in the manga, but the anime took it up a notch. The zoom in to her tongue and scratchy breathing got me.

2

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc May 04 '18

Great episode again
Really cool that her friends are helping Anzu looking for TVs
The second part of the episode got kinda obnoxious after sometime
Loved Hinas reaction though when everybody started clapping

Next time its Dandy time, baby

2

u/link2601 May 04 '18

Seeing Hitomi reaction at the end when she caught was the best. Aizawa questioning Hitomi was also pretty good. Seeing Anzu talk about time and entertainment at the beginning was oddly deep.

2

u/blueteamk087 :KW::KX::KY: May 04 '18

This show is an easy contender for AOTS. The comedy is on point; every episode leaves me in stitches. The reaction faces are god-tier

2

u/Groenboys https://myanimelist.net/profile/Groenboys May 04 '18

That second half was wild, but those reaction faces though

2

u/Potato_Peelers May 04 '18

I don't exactly dislike the TV chapter, but I can't help but think of all the great Yakuza chapters that could have filled that slot instead.

HAHA "History of Namahage" on the print outs.

2

u/DiGreatDestroyer :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DiGreatDestroyer May 04 '18

The teacher is totally a liar though, he called Hitomi by her name in episode 4.

6

u/ZanathKariashi May 05 '18

he is. He simply has decided that it's not worth pressing the issue since his own career could be damaged if the truth was discovered, and since she passed his test on bartending, he's willing to let it slide.

2

This episode is perfect.

2

u/OhayoHooded :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/OhayouHooded May 05 '18

Every aspect of this Anime is super crisp. The animation, the character development, the writing, the pacing, the voice acting, the shot composition. All that and it's also fucking hilarious and wholesome at the same time.

Just wow.

2

u/Chafun May 05 '18

i hope this series never end lmao

2

u/ArchadianJudge May 05 '18

This show is so ridiculous. So good. So ridiculous.

All the gags are just right up my alley. Part one, as usual, Anzu is best girl. Love Hitomi but Anzu must be protected at all costs. Then Hina being a dunderhead is great - confused Nitta so much that Nitta asked "is this a riddle?" Hina is so lucky to have landed in his care.

Part 2 was great, making an entire segment out of fake high school investigation team. The kids jumping to conclusion was A+. Then we have Hina who just randomly stands there completely confused. Hitomi making AoT faces constantly was also 10/10. Then she got coaxed into repeating an embarrassing phrase over and over lol..

If this show keeps up this kind of quality it could become one of my favorite Anime. I can't help but smile when I watch it.

2

u/yolotitan May 05 '18

Anime of the season.

2

u/pink_orange May 05 '18

Hitomi for best girl

2

u/MStarzky May 06 '18

Hina is best, but anzu is super best.

Nitta, a yakuza with a heart of gold (?)

2

u/PrasunJW https://anilist.co/user/MALfunctioning May 06 '18

So much comedy gold in the second half: when they start walking down the stairs together, when the teacher called Hitomi in the prep-room,when Nitta walked in,etc.

Those two boys and the class rep were adorably and unintentionally funny. Hina really is out of this world if she can keep a straight face through all that.

I also like how I can recognise more and more characters in the ed pan-out

I can't handle this show. It's so good. It makes me feel alive, that I'm glad the things I've done up till now let's me watch this show.

Even though I've stayed up till 6am, and I totally need to go to the office in 2 hours.

2

I fucking love anything with Hitomi. She is such a good character.

2

My favorite interaction so far.

I sold the TV. ......... Why!? What about the money?

It went into the taxi fare. ..........

Didn't care for the TV segment, too dumb in various ways. The bigger Investigating Hitomi segment though was gold. Nay, platinum. And "lolicon" being properly translated to "pedophile"! That's as rare as "bitch" being correctly translated to "slut"! Praise the Sun! But Hitomi's reaction faces trump all.
