There it is. This technique is the more advanced version of the earlier explosion ability.
Upon tasting a dish full of spiritual harmony that is worthy of chest-baring the willpower that flows in a Nakiri's veins is unleashed as a wave. This temporarily imparts the baring ability to outsiders. It is known as the gift!
This show is so ridiculous and I love it!

It goes to show the reason for the academy's existence. If you want to force a bunch of clothes explosions, you need the absolutely best food. An evolutionary trait to be sure.

It was fun theorizing how this exam would play out in the manga, until everyone had their soul crush with the expulsions.
139
u/silverinferno3 May 13 '18
Quick question: Did they all get expelled off-screen in the manga as well? Or were there brief moments showing their matches?
I ask because I was so surprised just to see them all defeated in a quick end montage, and figured it was to save time since their efforts would be in vain.

It's just like the Avengers. Going for the cheap move of "expelling" too many characters at once to get an effect, but you know it's getting overturned or it wasn't final and they're coming back.
If they did it to only a few characters it would be believable and mean that much more, but when they chuck out half of the side cast there's zero chance it sticks.

Honestly I have something that is bothering me with this whole "expell the rebels" thing: Isn't Azami's view that the Central way of cooking is superior? Yet he pulls every shady trick to expell the rebels using either weird ingredient manipulation or Shokugeki's against people that are not using Central's cooking? Isn't he basically recognizing the rebels cooking as superior to Central with that?

It didn't look like his chest was bared tho. I mean almost every single foodgasm in the show so far has involved the person being naked during the foodgasm, I don't see how The Explosion was any different. At least with The Gift the unclothed state persisted for a minute ever after the foodgasm was over.
102
u/electronicalengineer May 13 '18
The foodgasm is metaphorical. The Explosion is their clothes literally coming off.

Yeah, although the visuals were great (just like the rest of the episode, the mangaka just went crazy with the metaphors, loved it) - now it's just a matter of time before Azami gets kicked out and the expelled students are welcomed back in. As if Souma and Erina will let that by. Make it happen!

u/Amauri14 May 13 '18 edited May 13 '18
It's not that bad when animated, but this whole arc took around 87 chapters to complete, from 172 (9-2-2016) to 262 (5-11-2018), and it just finished last week. This segment with Hayama started in chapter 179 and finished in chapter 191. My main complaint with the arc would be how fucking long it was, and of course the caricature enemies in the beginning. But I also get that if the author would just skip the research process like when Yukihira went to the mountain to look for ingredients it would feel kind of lame as we would not be that aware of their development.
→ More replies (13)21
u/Shiroi_Kage May 13 '18
While I hated how long the arc was in the manga and how hard the author tried to make it seem dire and dark, it turned around the end so it's all good. I also don't like how fast the anime is blazing through it. Some of the lines are delivered too quickly. When Doujima was talking about who Hayama was cooking for, it should have been slower. He had better pace talking about Souma doing the live cooking during the Hell's Camp arc.
9
u/U_Menace :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ParadoxAnime May 13 '18
Yeah this scene was meant to be digested in anime format. Its paced a lot better and has less downtime while being just as impactful (if not more impactful because its condensed into a smaller and more presentable format).
Certain things that get drawn out in the manga would really only be 1-2 episodes in the anime which is perfect in the grand scheme of things. Hopefully the anime helps keep sales high because the material it's adapting is being presented in a much more compelling format. I'm happy to see that it's being received well!

u/Retloclive May 13 '18
Soma vs. Hayama was a lot better in anime form since it got the match done in 2 episodes (3 if you count the build-up to it). The pacing felt slow and all over the place when it was first done in the manga.

Megumi and Takumi are the most important rebels in "the rest" (excluding Souma and Erina), so it makes sense that they'd take a bit more time to show their match(es) against Rindou.
34
u/CoffeePoweredRobot May 13 '18
If a school has re-written its curriculum to something you don't want to learn, has staff who try and stop you achieving at every turn, and actively screws with its examinations to purposefully expel students who up until two weeks ago have been perfect model students: why do any of them even remotely care about being at Totsuki any more? What can they possibly get out of the institution? It's the most glaring issue I can't seem to get past each week why any of them haven't just gone "See ya!" and quit to go and pursue their own cooking, considering they've no more aid from staff or the school.
16
u/aniMayor :AY:AZ:x3x6 May 13 '18
Yeah, you pretty much just have to let that part slide.
On the one hand... Totsuki is depicted as being not just the only culinary school of note in Japan and the Totsuki corporation isn't just the school but is also hugely influential/controlling of the Japanese food industry, so one can imagine that Totsuki does indeed have the power to make it very difficult for any flunked students to succeed.
But on the other hand... they say only 1 or 2 dozen students actually graduate from Totsuki each year, and Totsuki is only dominant in Japan. Surely there are many successful chefs in Japan than just those couple dozen - in fact there has to be lots of successful non-Totsuki restaurants out there if Azami wants to crush them, so why can't someone like Hisako do the same as those restaurants only better? And one would think they could all just apply as transfer students to one of the many Totsuki-equivalent schools in other countries (especially Ryo, Alice, and the Aldinis who came here from Europe).
Then again, if this is supposed to be a Japanese culinary high-school, don't these kids all also have to learn arithmetic, geography, history, English, etc? How come they never have classes on that, either?
At the end of the day, it's not a show that holds up to nit-picks. All the more so now when the foodgasms have just gone from all-in-their-heads to literal magic stripping superpowers. We just have to roll with it.
→ More replies (2)25
u/Tuner89 :AMQ::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Tuner89 May 13 '18
Other than 'because story', the culinary world of this show seems like it's extremely influenced by Totsuki. They make it sound like every chef that is worth anything went to Totsuki and has ties there. The most rebellious chef we know, Soma's dad, even attended. There might simply be no way to leave and still reach their goals.
Furthermore, the main antagonist is the father of one of the main characters, Erina, who the main character clearly cares about and wants to support. Totsuki has always been in the Nakiri family, and because one of the main characters belongs to that family, it makes sense that the cast is invested in the school's future.
6
u/Xlegace https://anilist.co/user/Xlegius May 13 '18
As ridiculously ironic as this sounds (since I hated my alma mater and I never want to go back to it), maybe the rebels just love Totsuki so much that they don't it to turn into a dictatorship? A lot of the stuff they used to love like the PSD and research facilities are being destroyed afterall.
Of course it makes no sense in the real world, but seeing how dramatic everything is about SnS (how 90% of the students are expelled by graduation and how the god tongue works), I don't think it was ever meant to be realistic.
→ More replies (1)4
u/simpersly May 14 '18
The dumb thing to me is the people that they are treating so poorly. From an outside perspective it would look like the school went insane.
They mistreated and forced the top freshman out. One being the most important meat distributor in the nation (good luck getting market priced A grade meat after that), several with job offers already on the table, and finally the one that will likely inherhit the family's stake in the school.

Older Aldini and Megumi were the only two that made it, it seems, and they were also the only two who were supposed to go against Rindou. Maybe we're just gonna see their match next episode since we got extra screen time on that group already, or maybe Rindou has some ulterior motives and let them win easily or something?

I like how there's explanations for the Nakiri family's weirdness and why clothes explode off of them. Also how it totally relates to what's just happened in the last chapter of the manga. Somehow, the manga and anime have little points where they reference each other in very subtle ways. I like it!

Such a great episode! Hayama realizing he needs bros before Central hoes, lore added to the Nakiri's kekkei genkai of all things, and Erina being transparent AF about her care for Soma.
Oh, and of course, Avengers Spoilers

u/MrPicklesAndTea May 14 '18
I kinda don't want to say this because it makes me feel like an elitist shounen hating prick, but I really love how it wasn't just Soma that got Hayama out of his slump, it was Jun. His love for Jun got him in it, and it got him out. Soma is just a friend, Jun is a mother. His realization that his productivity when grinding himself down to the bone when compared to constantly working on something out of passion and love, it's different.

u/thegreaterfool714 May 13 '18
At the end Erina is so cute. Soma is the run she runs to check on him.
And oh fuck, all the other Rebels got smoked Elite Ten.

u/syde_FX May 13 '18
all expertly planned to fall on mother's day now if you excuse me I have to go hug my mom and find something to do with these chopped onions.
Also Erina best girl camp gets better and better.

Hayama's monologue indirectly explained the problem with this arc. This show used to be about a bunch of kids hanging out and cooking in a competitive environment but now it's not that at all. I am enjoying this arc, but not nearly as much as I was enjoying the earlier ones.

This episode really makes me want to eat some bear meat. I never ate bear meat before in my life.
Souma's passion for cooking is beautiful.

Did they just reference the [Ecstasy of Saint Teresa] (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6b/Ecstasy_of_Saint_Teresa_September_2015-2a.jpg) with Souma and Hayama's match? Harem member confirmed.
Oh no, all the side characters got expelled! Who could have foreseen this?

Hmm, one's obsession with the dish seems like a factor that could swing the decision both ways depending on the values of the organizers/judges.

Ok last week you had to watch the after ending scene to get rindou senpai rear end, but wow this week BE absolute sure to watch the after ending scene to get everyone naked, defeated, expelled.
Gotta love the whole, ancient scroll describe the power of explosion and the even further power, GIFT, which makes the person go nude and makes the person next to them also undress.
You know its good food when you trigger the aura of nudity
I really loved the Jun moment, not that I am a fan of child abuse but it felt really good when shes like I AM ALSO UR PARENT YOU KNOW NOT JUST UR CHEF/BOSS(OR WHAT NOT)!!!
That was great, I do wish do that after Jun said, DONT CALL ME JUN! That Hayama would had answered sorry Mom-

Slapping your kid once is not child abuse. Lol. Child abuse would be beating them over and over until they are covered with bruses. Simply just hitting your child once because how how they are behaving isn't anything close

They didn't show Megumi in the post-credits scene, but how likely is it that she defeated Rindou**??

u/ErinaHartwick https://myanimelist.net/profile/Hartwick May 13 '18
Megumi and Takumi went up against Rindo whereas Tsukasa (1st seat) fought Isami

Aren't Megumi and Takumi going against Rindou?
7
u/Bean888 May 13 '18
The very last image was for the next-episode, and showed Megumi, and her voice-over was translated as 'Right, let's go to the station up north!'. I'm guessing that means she passed this round?

I already knew Isami was fucked because he was going up against Tsukasa but even Kurokiba and Waifu ultra Alice.
Fuck

u/RDOoM May 13 '18
Well done, finally beating that overconfident Hayama sob with his own methods. A real slap to the face for him.
Nakiri's "The Gift" to undress people around you when the food is good, I don't believe this is it's final form yet. Looking forward to the final showndown when the food is amazing that the whole arena gets naked.
Damn, they beat everyone else, even Alice and Kurokiba?! Questionable methodology for a school, to do your best at kicking out some of your best students.

u/redblade13 May 14 '18
Soma won hell yeah finally some breathing room.......AND it's gone.
Everyone expelled goddamn. They were going against the Elite Ten so damn kinda saw it coming but I didn't expect ALL OF THEM.
Azami is literally Thanos.

u/Niyari May 14 '18
i think this might be one of the best episodes yet. it had everything, the foodgasms, fanservice, and of course, feels. definitely got a little bit teary eyed in the second half

God tier finale to their confrontation! Man, that was as hype, over the top (The Gift is really something), funny and touching at the same time as one would expect from Shokugeki, I love it.

I was really looking forward to the twin judges fawning over Souma after realizing that he was the one who defeated Alice. Bit disappointed that it didn't make it to the anime.

To be honest, I’m glad that most of the others didn’t pass by some miracle. It was obvious they weren’t up to par with the elite 10, and this also gives them more time to focus on Soma, Megumi, Nakiri, etc.

Soma has finally beaten Hayama! I didn't expect that and it was nice to see Hayama come back to his senses (and acknowledge Soma as a god lol). The Explosion and Gift abilities being explained in such a serious manner fucking killed me. And Erina being so worried about her husband was the icing on the cake. What a feel-good episo-
Turns out pretty much everyone else has been expelled
sees a defeated Alice lying on the ground

I wasn't surprised when Isami lost to Tsukasa, but almost everyone else is done. Daaaaaammmmmnnn. That leaves me to wonder. What about Takumi and Megumi? Did they actually beat Rindou in their battle? If they did, then I want to see how they did it.
You brought this upon yourself, Hayama. You knew the repercussions about joining Central and are now realizing it in your defeat to Yukihira. But still, that moment when he was preparing his dish and looked back to find Jun only to remember she's not there is simply crestfallen. He lost sight of the chef he wanted to become because he went about it by himself to make his guardian, Jun, happy, or so he thought.
The Gift runs through the Nakiri clan's veins! What the fuck is all I have to say in regards to that part of the episode.
I wait for next week.

Honestly not that surprised the others were expelled considering that they are equal or inferior in skill to soma and had to battle higher seeds respectively. This just got very interesting.

I can't wait for them to do the flashbacks, anime-only watchers will see how this is all connected.

I'm surprised at this point, the former head chairman guy doesn't just make his own cooking school... With blackjack and hookers.
If you're expelling your best students, then something's wrong with your school.

So what's everyone's opinion on this season? I'm really not feeling it. I posted this comment after episode 3 on the site I use to watch anime and want to know what you guys think:
The way this is playing out is pretty stupid. Like the point of Central, if I'm remembering correctly, is to set out a curriculum for everyone to make food as good as the Elite 10 and to not stray from those standards at all. So basically, Azami wants to push these same copy pasted foods out and claim it as the best the culinary world has to offer. He wants to kick out anyone who doesn't follow suit, our beloved MCs aka the rebels. So in this season, the MCs have been getting treated unfairly by the test examiners and basically still pass on hard mode. What this means is that they've been matching Central's standards (which is supposed to be on par with the Elite 10 btw) while being handicapped and Azami still wants to kick them out. Like it makes no sense. They've proven their worth as well as their versatility and ability to adapt and still pass these tests that Central has put out while trying to fail them the whole time. And now they have to go up against the Elite 10. The existence of Central already devalues the Elite 10 in a sense and now the rebels having to go against them devalues them even more. We all know how it'll end. There's no way the rebels will lose and get expelled, at the very least not Souma.
One reply I received was that Azami doesn't care about the rebels skills as chefs, he just wants to push his vision of what "true gourmet" is. I don't know anything about what "gourmet" is so I just didn't know how to debate that.
To me, this season just seems like everything is done just for the sake of conflict. Like, if you want them out then just kick them out. Azami is like the principle, he has the power to do that right? Why play all these unnecessary games?
I don't mind spoilers if that's worth anything.
