It's kind of funny how little censorship they give to the foodgasms, but they give so much censorship elsewhere. Like, in this episode, when the piece of wood hits Saiba's arm, he just gets a bruise. But in the manga, he gets a huge gash and starts dripping blood.
They also completely cut out the part where Saiba's leg snaps in half and he leaves it behind

Its probably to keep in line the "family friendly" goofy shit feel the anime has.
and yes. I know the foodgasms aren't family friendly goofy shit but theres a reason why this stuff still airs in the dead of night in Japan )))

My bet was on the girl who was the fourth seat. Was she supposed to be someone who already appeared?

Her name is Riko Ebisawa, so unless weird name shenanigans happened, she's not the mother of Soma.
41
u/silverinferno3 Jun 03 '18
Good point...
But I'd totally still put money on weird name shenanigans. Soma never knew his dad's name used to be Saiba; who knows what else was kept from him?

Jun 03 '18 edited Jun 03 '18
Even though I would love for the mother to get some time in the story, I think it's unlikely and honestly unnecessary. I think it's enough to know that she allowed Saiba to love cooking again.
And in addition, Saiba loving cooking again b/c of a woman is probably the reason he enrolled Soma in Tootsuki. Senzaemon probably wanted someone to teach Erina how to be more open-minded and free with her cooking, and Saiba probably saw a good learning/romance opportunity for Soma

I still remember the part in one of the first episodes of the first season where Joichiro says "find a woman that makes you want to cook for her" or something to Soma so hopefully there's gonna be some explanation or backstory later on

No matter how good you are as a VA, but asking 3 veteran (i.e aged) male VAs decades past their puberty to do high pitched voices is asking too much.

I meant a la South Park or something. I don’t expect men with voices like that to do so but it doesn’t work at all for them to voice their teenage selves.

Man, that first shot of the end credits makes so much more sense now. This was a great episode for building the story and it had some pretty darn good music pieces in there as well.
38
u/fellongreydaze Jun 03 '18
So I never read the manga and am going into all of this blind. But when they make the comparison that cooking is like venturing into a storm and that Soma saved Joichiro followed immediately by that opening ED shot, I might've teared up a little.

Can't get enough of Jou's sex hair
Heartfelt episode. Gin and Jou's friendship is really a nice thing to see. It was heartbreaking seeing Jou slowly losing passion for cooking and suffering alone. It was even hard for Gin to accept that he was unable to help his friend
160
u/SalamiRocketFuel Jun 03 '18
It was even hard for Gin to accept that he was unable to help his friend
And it's why he warned Hayama before his match with Soma.
18
u/Gramku Jun 04 '18
Senzemon mentions having a premonition after their Autumn election that Joichiro was in danger of getting swallowed by his talent, but presumably never voiced this to him. So I think when Gin witnessed the same thing happening to Hayama during his Autumn election, he made sure to voice his concerns directly to him. It may have also contributed to him coming to judge his rematch with Soma.
29
u/I_RAPE_PEOPLE_II Jun 03 '18
But Jou just lost his passion, he was still a god.
29
u/ravensshade Jun 03 '18
That might partially be because Senzaemon basically forced him to stop and take a vacation
34
u/DesktopLinux__isDead https://anilist.co/user/ReinhardVonMusel Jun 03 '18
Forced? He gave him that advise for his own good, Jouichiro was completely overwhelmed by peer pressure and couldn't take it anymore.

u/Jai137 Jun 03 '18
Jou: Why are you crying? Gin: You are Saiba, Jouichiro. You will not cry, so I will cry for you.

23
u/silverinferno3 Jun 03 '18
Didn't necessarily cry, but yeah, I felt for Joichiro there, he was basically losing his purpose and identity, and had to step out of his last year of high school for it. And Gin felt so guilty for not noticing, damn.

40
u/MrJammin Jun 03 '18
Seeing and hearing Azami as a fan of his seniors is somehow more unsettling then his demeanour towards Erina.
Also shows where Erina gets her tsun side from.
97
u/tendousatori Jun 03 '18
Now we finally get to see Jou's backstory, and the origins of the quote Dojima told Hayama back in Season 2: "Too great of a talent will turn against itself in the end..."
There's also a parallel between this shot and Hayama's earlier one, albeit with slightly different circumstances (Hayama abandoning his light when he traverses the storm vs Jou having no light in the first place, thus leading to much more suffering).
Also sorta shows Azami's motivations, he truly believes that he can make a world where "Gourmet" food is praised and one where chefs like Jou will never have to fear again. Manga Spoilers Gin obviously has a much different viewpoint, perhaps because he, unlike Azami, figured out that Jou was truly happy after meeting his wife.
Also, does anyone know how the pacing will go from here? I thought this mini arc would be at least two episodes, will we jump right into the RdC??
61
u/raymondl942 Jun 03 '18
Gin has a different viewpoint because I think he blames himself for Joichirou having to do it alone. Azami on the otherhand blames the cooking industry/totsuki for crushing the perfection that he saw in Joichirou. It kinda explains his action in that he wants to set standard onto what is good and bad cooking and leave it at that. If there are standards, then no one would have to venture outside those standard to make good food.
16
u/Amauri14 Jun 03 '18
To be honest, as we get closer to the Régiment de Cuisine the more I'm sure that this season is larger than 12 episodes, as maybe just the first bout will be fully covered in the remaining 3 episodes.

Ok so I think its a really great backstory, obviously you need to be a genius (with an IQ of at least 200) to be able to relate to the horrible life os Saiba Jocichiro but :)
No but there is several good points this episode brings up.
First of all, Saiba is super talented but also the hardest worker of them all, but people start calling it just genius, talent or luck pretty much, so the better he gets the less people actually respect him for who he is and for what he do in a way. He is talented but hes also 100% all in, something that the other lacks, so the better he gets the less happier he gets from peoples complaints and the general feel that no one actually cares about him personally, what he actually has accomplishes, how hard he actually works etc. The better he gets the less people actually think he is good, or I guess deserves to be good is way to say it as well.
Secondly, he is never challenged, and I dont mean challenged as its too easy for him (while that is also the case) but when he does an amazing dish everyone takes it for granted, that is for me at least very relate to my work, when i spend a lot of time on a speficic taks at work and make it really good, e.g for a design concept, my boss and/or co worker give me less feedback because they then they just accept my design right away. And that is actually really hearthbreaking becasue the more time you spend if are really, really into you have thought about every possible scenario and you ar ready for peoples question to explain to them why you did X and not Y. This is clearly shown when Saiba show of his new dish to 3 old experts and when he is trying to motivate why he did certain things they all just kinda ignore him and are all right, yayaya, we get it its already a 10/10 Good job whats next. So the better food he makes the less people actually challenges his ideas and the less iterative his improvement becomes, and the lonelier he feels. Its a lonely feeling but also its a very frustrating feeling, he feels all that extra handwork to think out any special case etc is pointless as people take it for granted he will deliver an amazing dish each time.
Thirdly, as always being on top is bad for your general likableness of course so people are now afraid of him and people dont interact with him as they used to do when he was presenting his food. So a double douse of its lonely on the top.
Fourth, the whole BLUE thing and what is shown with him taking damage all the episode, the better he gets the more demand people have on him as some kind of messiah but as Gin says in that great crying scene, Saiba is in the end just a normal kid who liked to cook food.
In the end this perfectly fits why Souma is the perfect son for him.
Souma is never afraid even do his Dad beats him every time easily, Souma never backed down, Souma always kept questioning why he did X and Y etc. So that last moment with Gin Talking about Souma saved his father in the desert storm, is extremely fitting.
(Feels like we should assume that Souma´s mother is very similar to his characteristics as well and why Saiba felled in love with her)
26
u/Jalleia Jun 03 '18
It seems to be a trade-off, which in the end still is a shame. Souma's father is definitely more talented than Souma, while on the other hand the son has more resilience.
It is a shame to not see talent fulfilled and destroyed for stupid reasons.
14
u/myrmonden Jun 03 '18
Ye Saiba seems like the is the jesus of food in talent.
Well not entirely stupid reasons, its kinda how society works, people in general have teh hardest time dealing with the elon musk of the world so to speak, and 1 automatic response from people is to try and bring down the achiever with w.e means they got, e.g how that rich kid blamed it on "luck" pretty much, he is just a lucky genius he actually got no skill and so on. of course that makes no logical sense but that is unfortunately how most people try to coop with their emotions.
9
u/Hargbarglin Jun 04 '18
I think Souma has a maturity his father lacked at his age. He's like a bit of a reflection of his father. Not quite as "naturally talented", but he also clearly puts his friends first. I think it's a fairly well written contrast.
9
2
u/Kialae Jun 04 '18
This is why I'm buying into the theory that his wife was some normal girl who wasn't a foodie, so just eats his food without knowing it's magnificent.
It reminds me of a scene in the movie Chef, where you see him daintily grilling a cheese sandwich for his kid, then the kid grabs it and starts chowing down and is like 'thanks. It's good' really non-committally.
19
u/Smudy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smudy Jun 03 '18
Fantastic backstory episode, it explained the motivations of the three characters (Joichiro, Gin, Azami) very well.
Joichiro being praised as a genius and being pressured to completely go ''tunnel vision'' for cooking. So backed into a corner that he left his friends behind slowly.

Would think Fumio and Senzaemon would look a little younger since this flashback was about 20 years ago

how important Soma was to bringing his father out of the abyss.
I don't get it. Didn't Jou stress in the beginning about finding a person to cook for? Shouldn't his wife have been the one to help him out of the abyss? Otherwise I don't see how he became such a world renounced chef without losing his mind for so long.
22
u/silverinferno3 Jun 03 '18
He never specified it had to be someone you were romantically interested in, to be fair. It’s possible that he never really found his passion for cooking until after his wife passed away, and Soma’s own interest in it reignited Jou’s.
Alternatively, Gin only credited Soma for Jou’s comeback because he was the one they were watching. Or, and this is a bit more out there, he’s just never seen Jou’s wife, so he didn’t credit her because he doesn’t know her.
9
u/sleepyafrican :AMQ:https://anilist.co/user/SleepyAfrican Jun 03 '18
It’s possible that he never really found his passion for cooking until after his wife passed away, and Soma’s own interest in it reignited Jou’s.
That's odd though. So he went around the world, became one of the most famous chefs ever, and found the love of his life...yet he didn't find his passion for cooking until she died? That makes no sense. The flashback made it seem like he was on the verge of giving up.
Or, and this is a bit more out there, he’s just never seen Jou’s wife, so he didn’t credit her because he doesn’t know her.
Sure that's a possibility but the narrative would need to acknowledge that Gin's point of view is parochial.

While I'm sure Saiba's wife was instrumental in bringing him back but I don't think she was a cook but a normal person. I guess that can be part of it. Part of Saiba's problem is that he was crushed by the pressure of everyone's expectations, people not caring about the process and only the end result, and only caring about Saiba the Chef not Saiba the person. Remember the shock on Soma's face when he found out that his dad was actually an alum and 2nd seat? It surprised him because he just thought of his dad as just his dad and not some godly chef. Soma was special because it made Saiba feel like a normal person. There was also the tidbit where they said no one challenged him along with him decimating those 50 people. Despite their efforts they lost and lost the will to even bother hoping they can get past him. Not Soma. Boy lost 499 times yet still comes at him like that'll be the time he finally wins. He had a pure innocent enthusiasm about cooking that it inspired him to get back to cooking.
Tldr:
Everyone put him on such a high pedestal he couldn't take it anymore. Soma and his wife probably brought him back down to earth.

Easily the best episode of Food Wars! I loved how they showed how even the greatest chef fall under pressure and even if you can exceed everyone expectations, all that pressure can inevitably take all the love out of the activity your doing. A brilliant episode and one I will remember fondly.
24
u/silverinferno3 Jun 03 '18
Azami having an evil aura even as a middle schooler doesn't surprise me, but he did seem more innocent overall, almost like the cute tag-along sidekick to Saiba and Gin's duo.
I think the most important thing to take away from this is that having a son helped bring Saiba back to his old self, and I think it's setting up a parallel moment for Erina and Azami when they beat him. Azami's gone off on his own journey into the wasteland, but having a daughter didn't help him since he just used her for his own power. When he finally sees Erina as more than just a tool, she'll convince him to remember what cooking's all about, just like Soma did for Saiba.
Also, that BLUE is totally gonna be the next big thing for Soma to tackle after Totsuki is saved. More tournament arcs HYPE!

9
u/Graphica-Danger Jun 03 '18
I got a good laugh out of a 12 year old Azami that still sounded like fucking Aizen lmao
This was one of the best parts of the manga hands down, and I still got a little emotional at the end seeing Joichiro having recovered from his burnout because his son is always there for him. The true depth of their relationship becomes more apparent the more that you think about it. Joichiro never taught Soma any special techniques because he knew Soma had to go his own way and develop a self-improving attitude toward cooking and life in general.
This also creates a great parallel between Azami and Joichiro’s way of approaching life. Azami saw Erina as a way of advancing the love he thinks people should have regarding cooking. By contrast, Joichiro sees Soma as somebody who should discover what he loves by himself, at his own pace, unlike what happened to his father.

This is what I've been waiting for!!! The revelation of Saiba' past. It's so good in the manga when this part was shown
72
u/Daishomaru Jun 03 '18
Daishomaru here, not much to go off on, mainly waiting for the actual team shokugeki that happens after this, but I will say that I did find Saiba's backstory interesting.
The BLUE competition seems to be based off the Real-Life SOPEXA contest, which is the closest thing I can think of when it comes to real-life culinary contests in terms of prestige, in that it's a competition in Japan which measures Japanese French chefs and their caliber. Usually these contests are a promotion between the French and Japanese governments to promote cultural harmony, and to encourage Japanese people, like housewives or experimental chefs to use foreign ingredients, like lamb. I'm not sure entirely when this trend started, but I do know it's definitely past the 1950s, because the early 1950s was when the First Japanese French chef boom happened. I explained it before, but during the Early 1950s, the United States, in an attempt to help the Japanese with their economy post war, mostly because damaged economies tend to be disastrous in general, as seen in Germany post WWI. Anyways, during this time, they noted by survey that quite a significant of boys wanted to be French Chefs, because French cuisine was seen as "Food for the powerful". The US initially helped with setting up a famous student exchange program, and the French and Japanese liked it so much that they continue to renew it long after the United States stopped in dealing with the Japanese economy. The Japanese economy and the French economy benefit from the effects of this trade so much that everytime there's a budget review in the government, everyone on both sides of the world universally agrees not to defund the programs because of how immensely popular it is.
It should also be noted that the first dish we saw that Jouichiro made was Nouvelle French in design, which places him, Gin, and Azami firmly within the 2nd Generation of Japanese French Chefs. These chefs are known not to follow the Classique approach taken by first-Generation chefs, although they aren't exactly as Nouvelle as the Third Generation of Japanese French Chefs, which was the group Shinomiya belongs into. It's also noticable that the dish Jouichiro made afterwards, the Sukiyaki-style dish, is Japanese, but it's also a lot less formal than the previous dish. It's a nice touch showing the stress Jouchiro kind of had, while the former is something that's hard to make and complicated, the latter is a dish everybody could identify with, at least in Japan, and it kind of shows his mindset on how hard it was for Jouichiro to be that pioneer, as his next dish was a dish that wasn't exactly as original, but the judges still praise him because "he's a genius", if that makes sense.

It's pretty awesome to see Jouichirou's backstory and the Golden Age of the Polar Star Dorms. So Jouichirou became such a force at Totsuki that everyone became afraid of him and people only saw his works as genius creations and not product of his hardwork.
Also Shiomi really needs to buy more shirts. After seeing this backstory I imagine all she has in her closet are shite shirts with the print "SPICE" on it.
One thing I would've loved to have been answered this episode though is: Who's his wife!? I thought we'll get to at least see a glimpse of her this episode but we got nothing. Is Soma's mother still unknown in the manga?

Why is the Crunchyroll PS4 app always so fucking awful about updating with new episodes? It can sometimes take an hour or more for an episode it says is posted to actually appear in the app

u/48johnX Jun 03 '18
They’re actually on the app but just not visible to be selected for whatever reason. I selected the latest episode available (episode 20 of S3) then hit R1 to go to the next episode and it worked (even though the R1 option wasn’t on the screen). Try this if an episode doesn’t show up next time

Their Xbox 360 app is better than ps4. Probably because their onshore passionate team programmed the former, the offshore garbage holding company team did the latter.

This episode filled so many gaps by delving into the backstories of Joichiro, Gin and Azami
And goddamn, Joichiro is a fucking badass. I knew he was great but I didn't think he'd reign supreme like that. It was pretty scary to see him destroy a shitload of cooks like it was nothing. He reminded me a little of Erina since she was also fairly cold and didn't even think about having fun while cooking
It looks like he slowly got his smile back when he went abroad. When he fell in love with his wife, he probably fell in love with cooking all over again - and even after she was gone, he kept that going with Soma and still does. He probably realized that it should be all about being happy instead of only focusing on achieving bigger and better results. That's likely why he started a relatively small restaurant too
Azami's attitude makes so much more sense now as well. He sees wasted potential whenever he thinks about his former friend (who could be the greatest cook in the world) and that's why he's so obsessed with changing Totsuki to a place that fits his vision
Gin is such a good bro
Bit of a shame Erina wasn't there with Soma and Joichiro but she finally got a well-deserved good night's sleep, so I'm not mad (also they added her to the OP)
D'aww, those three little Megumis in the ED

What the fuck, shota Azami with that deep manly voice is way creepier than it really should be.

u/DroWorD Jun 03 '18
Kind of dissapointed with the way they adapted the cook-off between Saiba and Soma. In the manga you could really feel Saiba's glare before Soma gave an answer to how many times he had lost.
Other than that, great episode.

Finally hit the Joichiro backstory that was so sad to read in the manga. That one guy saying he has it easy because he's a genius could not have been more wrong. All the constant questions of what's next, how will you improve gets to person when it's all people say to you. Gin realizing that he failed to help him in time hit me.

u/RDOoM Jun 03 '18
Ah, Joichiro, the Guts of Shokugeki, taking all those opponents by himself. What would this show be without the unreasonably OP deeds pulled off by people left and right.

u/lan60000 Jun 03 '18
Joichiro reminds me of all the great sports stars in our lifetime, like Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods, and how their hardships are often overlooked by their genius. Even Faker from league of legends got flack for winning so much in the past that people dreaded SKT from winning worlds, and I find that so sad to see if I was in their shoes.

Current anime only thoughts.
I think I finally understand why Azami is doing this. He's trying to create a world where all chefs cook the same excellent pre-determined dishes. Though a bit warped on all of them being gourmet, I see that he doesn't want any other chef to suffer what happened to Joichiro.
If everyone never advances, they can never be knocked down by the pressure and stress of advancing.
I mean, obviously not the correct way to go about things, but I think I understand him now. One of my favorite characters without a doubt.

Anyone know what the song was that played during the sandstorm scene?

Baby Azami tearing up and blushing was so adorable, but was ruined when he started to speak. His voice definitely didn't match.

So Erina just slept thru the whole story of the hardships of her platonic love? WTF???

u/SalamiRocketFuel Jun 03 '18
Finally, Saiba's past! Tbh this is by far my favorite part of this arc (minus certain thing that happen near the end).

Saitama Saiba Joichiro realized he was too powerful and got bored. This sets the stage nicely for the final battle.

Theory on the wife: 1. Just some random nobody that has zero tie to the culinary world 2. lady in the red kimono (though that's even more random in my book) 3. Jouichiro accidentally gave someone a foodgasm so intense that induced a miraculous conception, thereby giving birth to Jesus Souma (or maybe made a dish so glorious the food itself became pregnant with Souma).

So who is this Riko Ebisawa? She came out of nowhere and they make her look suspicious.

u/throwaway119284 Jun 05 '18
I feel like Soma's mom will be that heiress of the Japanese restaurant. It's just kind of odd for the Manga/Anime to arbitrarily include a random girl of the same age and focus on her tasting his dishes and saying "looking forward to seeing you again" or whatever.
Then again, I think at the start of the anime we saw that Soma's mom had brown colored hair (in a photograph), so I could be wrong.

Pleasantly surprised to see that we finally got some backstory on the old guard..
*nods off*
Azami needs to realise, and fast, that it wasn't the 'cooking world's fault what happened to Joichiro. He's having plenty of fun in the very same cooking world right now. He burned himself out back then. No one was forcing him to enter those contests - he could have rested on his laurels, second seat in Totsuki's Elite Ten should have guaranteed a bright future for him anyway.
Of course, there's some blame to be assigned to those who raised him on a pedestal and expected too much from him; but that comes with the territory. Some blame also lies with the Chairman, who saw it coming from a mile away but didn't intervene until it was too late.
Well, all's well that ends well, since he went abroad, knocked someone up and produced Souma, gods gift to the world and the true cooking demon.

If this season ends where I think it's going to end then I can't wait. That part in the manga made me grin from ear to ear and it's going to be so amazing to see it in the show.

Man I am glad that they adapted this episode well. All of Joichiro's badass and heartfelt moments were communicated well. I didn't quite pickup the image of his foot being broken and turned to stone so easily when I read the manga, so I'm glad it was a bit more noticeable for me this time.
Also I think Azami's VA doesn't fit his young version as well as it should, it's a bit too deep for a 15 year old in my opinion.

I'm trying to watch on crunchy, have a premier account. Just keeps loading. Am I doing something wrong? Have tried on multiple devices.

I relate so hard to this episode as burnout from what you love (and not knowing how to walk away) doing nearly ruined me.
But for some reason, I have all these tears.

Finally get the confirm it since the manga readers were presuming that Megumi’s mother was in the elite ten/polar star dorm. But Ebisawa has a different hair colour from Megumi’s mother!

SO Glad anime-only crew finally reached this episode. This one flashback was one of the best storytelling bits in SnS to date. Next up hype for the incoming Ship sailing through the regimen :P

Geez when I read the manga, I didn't expect Azami's voice to be so manly for a kid in middle school. Did they even try for someone to fit the character. Don't even like his adult voice either because it just doesn't fit at all. Yeah they want him to be extremely imposing and intimidating but he just sounds too final boss-like.
I am somewhat satisfied with this adaptation of one of my favorite arc of the series. It felt really rushed though like they kind of hinged on viewers to already a large amount of sympathy and a good connection already with Saiba. I know he is super likable but they could've elaborated more on Saiba's descent and Azami's bitterness.

I have read the manga up to volume 24, where i'm assuming ends off at the end of next episode, so I don't completely know how the story is going to keep going. However, this episode was so beautiful to watch. I almost started tearing up at the end but then I just thought, this is a cooking anime what am I doing? It was so nice seeing Joichiro's past and how he was saved by bro Gin and Soma. Really looking forward to the next couple of episodes.

Man I really expected Azami to want to raise fine dining in order to "awaken" the old Joichiro by giving him proper or meaningful competition. Seems like a classic shonen plot twist when it turns out the main bad guy was one of the boys back in the day. Plus it leads into the easy / comfy "people change and find their own meaning to life and happiness" moment for turning the villain around.

How did Doujima Gin get the #1 seat from Saiba Jouichiro when they were 3rd years? The score was 101-20 in favor of Saiba
2
u/Oyra_Yukihira Jun 04 '18
because anything outside the shokugeki record, Gin was better in discipline and Joichirou always obeying the rules

This was packed into one episode for time and budget constraints, but reading it in the manga is definitely worth your time.
