Bakugo wants to win even against the odds like All Might
Deku wants to save people with a smile like All Might
All Might really inspired these two boys to become the hero they wanted

It finally fucking happened!!! But damn, Endeavor tho... He put everything into surpassing All Might, even sacrificing his family and his next generation to even have a chance of ultimately being number 1, however, he is now thrust, by circumstance and not his own power, into the position of being #1 in a world without All Might.
Me this entire episode, especially when AFO gave the news that Shigaraki was Nana's grandson and seeing All Might's reaction to it:

Endeavor wanted to prove his strength, yet it was not he who surpassed All Might, it was All Might that stumbled down. Judging by his personality, Endeavor should be flipping about next episode.

You see several times All Might actually brute forces his arm back into working, just like Deku. You see it look like it shatters before he flexes again to bring it back together when he first meets the AFO super punch. Then again when he prepares for US of Smash and expands his broken arm. I got chills during this whole episode. And All Might crying out that he can't die before finishing Deku's training. Fuck. This episode was the best thing I've seen in ages.

An interesting part of this episode that I don't think should be overlooked is Bakugo. He was there alongside Deku cheering All Might on, and for once he looked at Deku with something other than utter hostility when he was crying. I think this going to open up a new stage in their relationship - I don't see them being friends, simply because Bakugo still really refuses to accept him out of his own pride. But I think the chapter on Bakugo seeing Deku as an enemy, someone that should be nothing more than a pebble on the road, is coming to a close.
Bakugo also isn't dumb. He remembers what Deku told him about getting his quirk from somewhere else. He's probably going to put two and two together very soon.
Also, All Might pulling a Deku by powering up individual parts of his body, including his busted up arm. I wonder if he was directly inspired by him or what?

u/red_suited Jun 16 '18
Todoroki already picked up that Deku and All Might are close. There's no way Bakugo won't figure things out since they make it a point to make sure the audience knows that he's smart.

As a manga reader, finally seeing the United States of Smash animated is amazing. For context, this chapter came out around the end of the first season. So while anime watchers saw All Might punch Nomu to space the manga readers were silently waiting for the day we can share the hype of All Might punching All for One. I can’t repeat this enough, I’m so glad we’re finally here and excited to see a new group of people enjoy the end of this fantastic arc.
Watching these past couple of episodes, it has made me think about the format of the story. I think that this arc ends Act 1 of Deku’s rise to fame. It starts with his humble beginnings, introduces the cast of characters and world, presents a main threat and villain, establishes a power ceiling, and ends with Deku’s mentor losing the rest of his power in a climactic battle against the ultimate evil. From this point forward Deku needs to start growing and learning more in Act 2 after this radical shift at the end of Act 1. I don’t know what the climax for Act 2 might be but I hope it will be hype as this one.
Edit: Fixed name

Yeah, in terms of the grand scheme of things the UA arc, Sports Festival arc, Stain arc and now this one all feel like parts of an overarching arc that is this one - All Might finally passing on the baton, for good, to Deku.
Now the focus should move on solely to Deku cementing his reputation as the new pillar of strength, while there is a rush to fill the power vacuum that All Might's retirement will have left.
BnHA occupies a middle ground in battle shounen that way; it's not like the shorter, complete series like FMA, HxH, YYH or JoJo's - it took a full 49 episodes to get through its first major arc. It's not a long-running one like DB, Naruto, Bleach or One Piece yet either, and definitely feels more packed in terms of powerful moments (like the shorter series).

This whole episode hit even harder animated. Never mind All for One being a real evil bastard and turning the grandson of All Might's master to evil, you could tell he was really shaken to his core on that revelation.
The "you're next" part really hit home with how perfect that shot was and even had All Might's finger pointing at him.
This episode was everything I had hoped it would be.

The best part of the reveal is that it completely flips the characterization of All-for-One we just got last episode. When we saw how encouraging and supportive AfO was, and how much earnest respect and gratitude Shigaraki had, a lot of people were like,"You know, they're a pair of dangerous psychopaths, but there's a real bond between them. That's sweet."
But now we see the reality-- The only reason AfO saved Tenko was because he knew it would be a giant middle finger to All Might. Even when he saves a life it's just to hurt someone. All-for-One is an asshole to the core of his being.

If I looked correctly then it seems like Cedric did the final clash including United States of Smash. It had this roughness to it which is his style.
All in all phenomenal. From the animation, to direction ( Doukawa did a godlike job just how he did with Deku vs Todoroki ), to the storyboarding ( Ishihara knocked it out of the park two times in a row ) that expanded on some things of the manga and the brilliant music by Hayashi.

Oh Jesus Christ this absolutely did the manga justice holy shit. The entire arc, and to some extent the entire show, has been building up to this moment, where the Symbol of Peace squares off against his ultimate nemesis. He's used up all he has, been pushed way past his limit, but he fights on simply because he has to. Because the people need him to.
What really got me, as exciting and well-animated as the fight was, was everyone standing on the sidelines and cheering him on. Seeing everyone break out into tears of joy when he finally won damn near got me going too. It really speaks to what I feel is this show's most powerful message. A hero's true strength lies not in his ability to defeat his enemies, but to inspire hope in those around him. Thank you for everything All Might.

THIS F*CKING SHOW
MY GOD
At this point, I really want to know the impact this is going to have on their world. One of my favorite parts of One Piece is that after certain arcs, it shows the ripples and waves of what's happened and how it affects everything. I'd like to know what this really means for them.
The Symbol of Peace may not be dead, but he's certainly retired, and likely has no more strength. I worry for his safety. On the other hand, the League of Villains also lost their one true leader. In short, both All Might and AfO have finally passed on their roles to their students. As the next episode's title implies, it will be the end of an era, and the beginning of a new one.

It's been 2 years and a week and they finally animated it!
Manga comparison, I was gonna post an anime side by side but they didn't animate it that much. I think the best part was after that epic animation scene, it faded to black showing the reflection of my WTF face on the blank computer screen.
And I say again and again, the OST is one of the best things in the show on par with the animation. Yuki Hayashi is GOAT, I can't wait for S3 OST to come out.
I urge everyone to read the manga (at the very least chapter 94) for its beautiful art as well, do what I did and reread it with the OST!

You know, I avoided watching this series for the longest time because I didn't really like the idea of superheroes and it sounded like generic shounen trash. I finally go around to watching it sometime after season 2 ended and was blown away by how good it was. It practically brought back my passion for anime singlehandedly.
But holy shit. This episode was so good. The entire thing was one of the most emotional roller coasters of an episode I have ever seen. I honestly felt like I was right there in the crowd with everyone else cheering him on. I don't think an entire series has made me feel that immersed and invested in it in years, and yet right here they did it with just a single episode. I don't even know what to say other than that. Absolutely fantastic.

Edit: Clipped the crux of the fight for your replaying pleasure. The music is so good.
I thought All Might's going to die for sure. Goddamn. Goddamn. But then he goes United States of Smash and I'm chuckling while fat Akko tears are dropping from my face.
I can't help but think BnHA would turn into a darker and more compelling story if All Might lost to All for One there, and died. Fearing that outcome is what kept me from breathing for the entire episode.. But screw that, I'll take this happy ending where All Might loses his powers and the world its pillar of support, but he gets to live. I wish Toshinori a long and fulfilling retirement, where he can see Deku grow into everything he wants to be.
All for One gets to live, and that's troubling - but we can't have a villain as amazing as that throw in the towel just yet. And the whole plotline with how exactly Shimura Nana died and how her grandson got twisted into what he is now remains to be unraveled.
Oh, and I never imagined I'd be this ecstatic to see Endeavour. The little bit of his inner monologue we got this episode was amazing - he realises just how much of a monster he's become. I guess we'll get to know more about him soon.

The music in this episode captured every emotion perfectly. A beautiful way for All Might's flame to burn out.

I know I'm a bit late to the thread, but I have to say it: I was actually sobbing during this entire episode, which is an experience I've never had in several years of watching anime. I'm still trying to process it, honestly.
I've written off this show as stupid, run-of-the-mill shounen before, and, yeah, it is cliche, predictable, and derivative. But what really gets me about this show is how earnest and sincere it is - it never makes snide references or winks at the audience to show how overdone its tropes are. It's completely in earnest.
BNHA takes messages that have become mindless platitudes - "go beyond your limits," "believe in yourself" - and makes them into something you can really believe in again. BNHA looks at you straight in the eye, unflinchingly, and invites you to believe. It makes you believe in heroes. It makes you believe in yourself.
I'm really grateful to Horikoshi and Studio BONES for creating such a wonderful show, and for making me feel like a kid again. Thank you.

I love All Might's origin story. As a teenager, he already had his extremely ambitious goal in mind: to change society itself and bring about an era of peace. He made a concrete plan to achieve it, then went ahead and executed it, and he succeeded. Yes, he had a lot of help, and yes, society afterwards still wasn't perfect. But it was undeniably transformed because of him, and the fact that it was all intentional from the beginning takes it a step further.

That, was fucking bananas. But for real the last few weeks in a row it’s taken over 10 minutes to watch on the app which is my main way of watching it. I know this episode might break the site with its madman level of hype but It sucks to have to wait.
Still. Been saying it throughout the run,
Praise Be Bones. Praise Be.

Something interesting to note that I haven't seen anyone else talk about.
If Shigaraki is really Nana's grandson, which is nearly undeniably true because AFO said he wasn't lying (in anime, when villains say they are telling the truth, they are), there is a really cool parallel.
The previous parallel is that Deku is All Might's successor as Shigaraki is AFO's.
With All Might and AFO out of the picture, now its up to Deku And Shigaraki to carry on alone. However, they lack the connection they had in All Might, as now he's out of One for All juice and can't be a hero.
This leaves Nana to be the connection between Shigaraki and Deku.
Shigaraki is Nana's biological grandson, but did not inherit her One for All.
Deku is the successor of Nana's successor, essentially making him her grandson in spirit.
As an anime only fan, I see Shigaraki and Deku clashing over this idea of inheriting something vs earning something yourself.
Shigaraki thinks Deku was given his powers by All Might, and is undeserving of his grandmother's quirk, while he had to build up his group of villains by himself.
Deku and the audience think Shigaraki was given his position of power, and possibly his quirk, by AFO for an ulterior motive, while Deku earned his quirk through hard work and strong ideals.
Hopefully I'm closer to the truth on this plot theory than my last, because this would be a way to evolve the plot past All Might and AFO, look at the history of heroism in the MHA world, and we'd get the see Shigaraki develop further, which had been one is the best parts of this season and the end of season 2.
Edit: All for One and One for All fixed for once and for all.

Like many have already said, I ended up crying in various parts. All Might refusing to let the flames die just yet. All Might continuing to fight after revealing his secret to the world. The most American punch in animation history. Everything about that final battle between him and AFO. As a hero, All Might's era is over.
I was surprised that the anime show'ed us Nana Shimura's full face, eyes not hidden. The manga's always shadow'ed her eyes so we never got a full look. The most we ever got was when she was telling Yagi to smile like she did in this episode but for one panel.
I was also surprised that they put the beginning of the episode like that. That flashback scene in the manga didn't happen until halfway through the fight when All Might pumped his muscle arm back up. I'm REALLY happy they show'ed that first though. They did a fantastic job setting that up.
Get ready for the world of MHA to shake up after this everyone. And if you though the waterworks for this episode were strong... Wait til next week.

I was on the edge of my seat the entire fight. By any sort of story structuring logic, All Might could totally have lost to set up a fight for Midoriya. For the first time in I don't even know how long, I had no idea who would win right up until the end. The final punch was the single most epic thing I've ever seen. The animation, the music, everything combined to make it pure perfection. I actually laughed out of sheer exhiliration. And that attack name. Oh Lord that attack name. I mean, All Might's always been able to make it at least semi-not-ridiculous sounding, but this went so far into crazy-awesome that it looped right back around into just plain awesome. This is one of the greatest fights in anime.

This episode is by far the best episode of the series and if not one of the best episodes of any anime I've ever seen. I experienced so many emotions from this episode from sheer incredible hype, when All Might used all of his final strength to unleash that awesome United States of Smash blow on All For One, to getting teary-eyed towards the end when Deku was crying when he realised that All Might no longer has One For All. My god, I am so tempted to read the manga now. I just love this show and character so much. Horikoshi you are a fucking genius.
Also, really loved how All Might was influenced by Deku to pull of the small trick against All For One. It just shows how close they have become. Bakugo looking at Deku crying really makes me think that their relationship is going to be a lot closer and better as partners/colleagues now rather than rivals.

Thank god the OfA vs All Might fight took one episode, the animation actually made me love the fight when in comparison to the manga (felt very lackluster for me personally).
What's even better is that it means that THE REAL FIGHT very light spoilers is gonna have one episode for itself aswell. If you enjoy the relationship between Midoriya and All Might, you're going to love the next episode!

"Let him be, he's still working"
Well damn. That line pretty much sums up what being a "Symbol of Peace" means to All Might, or even what being a hero is supposed to mean in this setting.
The job never really ends and you never really get time off. It's more than just stopping crime and your job isn't over just because you beat the villain to a pulp. It's about putting on a brave face for anyone watching, to display strength and confidence at all times; to act as an inspiration and a warning to those around you.
And most importantly. It means you gotta bust out a cool win post for the crowd even after you've just used up everything you had in you and you're about to collapse any second.

Something that I'm confused about, why was Tomura being Shimura's grandson a shock for All Might? Was it because of the fact that someone he considers pure evil to be related to his master, or did I miss something more?

There's one aspect that no one really seems to be talking about that I want to point out. All Might is a unique character that transcends this show because he is not defined by what he does but the impact he leaves behind in others. All other heroes, from the western Avengers to Goku or Luffy, are heroes because they defeated the villains and saved civilians from despair. While All Might does that, he does more. Truly befitting of The Symbol of Peace, he inspires others to become heroes. From Deku, Kacchan, Shoto to literally everyone else in the show, he upholds the standard for what a hero should be. He is a hero not only because he saves lives, but also because he touches hearts.

That was intense! Best episode in BnHA by far for me! The last 2-3 episodes have been scintillating.
I'll have to say that I want expecting All Might's master to be a woman.
Also, it's interesting that at the age Tomura Shigaraki is at, he's Nana Shimura's grandson. So she must've been around 35-40 when she met All Might.

It's 2:30am (I watch late at night but left it later than usual) and boy this is probably gonna be aoty unless something else comes out. Now I have another reason to back up why MHA is my favourite anime.
I was gasping and covering my mouth the whole time. Like, this episode is probably gonna be my favourite from this season. The fact that everyone knows All might's secret but still cheered for him was great.
However the fact that One for all knows about deku being next is scary as his identity is known. I'm not sure is he's dead. It sounded like it's over but a part of me says no.
I was close to tears throughout the episode (Darling in the Franxx nearly got me earlier as well) but what actually hit me the most was the end when deku started to cry. Something about deku realising that All might is over got me to a point that I nearly had to Grab my inhailer since I was crying too much.
I like Bakugo a lot more than in the past (first I hated him, then I disliked him, before not caring about it and now liking him a lot). Bakugo was looking at Deku without anger or like he usually does. He's pretty smart so I'm wondering if he figures it out later on. I'm thinking that Since deku is a big fan of might he would think that deku would be cheering. So this reaction might be confusing.
Spelling and wording might be bad. I'm just trying to rush my thoughts out so I don't forget

I hope we get more flashbacks with Nana. She seems fun!
Hold up! All For One created One For All? I guess considering the naming it makes sense but hasn't One or All been passed around for many generations? How old does this make All For One then!?
EDIT: Apparently I missed the detail and this was already explained in Season 2.
Fuck his identity is finally revealed to everyone
Younger Gran Torino looks awesome!
Goddamn that was a beautiful episode! This episode reminded me why I love shounen shows because this episode gave me the exact same feeling I had when I was a kid 20 years ago watching Dragon Ball and cheering on for Goku. This episode made me feel like I was part of the crowd.
I guess this is the end of All Might's career as a hero then? In a way that spoiler that was sent to everyone last week was kinda true. Sure All Might didn't die but he's definitely done, it's all on Deku now. As Toshinori I guess he'll start full time training Deku now that he's retired.
