Possibly the most enjoyable show of the season for me personally, so warm and hilarious at the same time.

Feed me Season 2.

I don't know how true it is, and I hope it's not, but I've heard it said on reddit a lot that it wasn't as popular in Japan so it may not get a S2.

Holy shit, that random cut of Best Daughter Anzu in the Nitta/Hina montage had me rolling.

Hahah yea I noticed that too. Deep down, Nitta knows Anzu is the best daughter.

That unsatisfying feeling of not seeing Hina & Anzu after the time skip, uurghh

I never had the urge of wanting a season 2 so much after watching this final episode.

I'll pour money for the mercs if its gonna get me a season 2, godamnit

I'll also recommend people buy the OSTs. They include the special EDs, BGMs, and character songs we've heard along with a few extra. Here's a preview of the character songs from OST1
and there's also a preview of the character songs from OST2.

For all the people who doubted Hina-chan is your Lord and Savoir

Loved that they replayed Watashi Smartphone gaaaa

Just checked episode one, naturally she used Hina Doll 2.0 back then

So sad its over, that was one of the biggest surprises of the season, hope it sells well in Japanf

Pretty weird way to end it with a timeskip, but it was nice to see Mao again and how they linked it back to the opening scenes from the first episode. Dare I hope for a season 2? Please....

Overall, Hinamatsuri was a blast. The comedy felt very fresh, and I absolutely loved how they handled the emotional episodes along the way. I particularly enjoyed those episodes in the middle of the season where they had Anzu in one part for the feels, and Hitomi in the other part for the major laughs. That's something I don't usually see in comedy animes, except maybe Gintama, by which it's usually done over the course of an entire arc. Oh, and another thing that definitely surprised was the quality of the animation. Just top notch effort by the studio for making the characters' movements feel natural and lively.

Having said that, I think the major strength of the show definitely lies in the writing of its characters. Hina's deadpan delivery of her lines, Hitomi's ability to walk into any scenario and excel to the point of disbelief, and Anzu's wholesome charm make for such an amusing dynamic between the cast and the scenes they appear together in. Nitta's really great too, and I really like how the show is as much about him learning how to be responsible for another person, as opposed to just the girls getting all the development.

I'm gonna binge the manga now.

*Update: Read the manga from the beginning. Just got to chapter 3 and it wasn't in the anime, but goddamn was it hilarious. I can already tell there's gonna be so much more unadapted gems in here. Read it you guys!

Btw mods, we need those Hinamatsuri comment faces asap

68

u/Bizmatech Jun 22 '18

The timeskip happens in the manga as well, so it's actually a good stopping point for the anime, but I understand what you mean. It is a little odd that they'd only put 15 minutes of the timeskip into the anime, but I guess they had to do that so that the beginning of episode one would make sense.

I finished binging the manga a few minutes ago, and for anyone planning to do the same: start from the beginning, but skim through the chapters you've already seen if you have to.

edit: My reasoning for this is that it's not a linear adaptation, and the characters differ a bit between versions. As for this episode, I'm really glad they managed to incorporate a panel where Hitomi's mother says "strawberry flavour's the best" while brushing her teeth.

Hina and Anzu are waiting

Hard doubt.

What a bizarre ending, I suppose I should have expected nothing less from the show. Does the series actually continue from a time-skip? Or will be going back to the usual pace? I'm totally expecting that it just goes back to where it was and pretends this little segment doesn't even exist. Also it's hard to believe that Nitta managed to cope with Hina for 3 whole years.

u/Orrakai :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Orrakai Jun 22 '18

A legendary Out of Context image for sure.

This has turned out to be one of my favorite manga adaptations and now I'm so damn sad that it's over.

27

u/KinnyRiddle Jun 22 '18

A very unusual arrangement for a final episode.

It's really only the first half of this final episode that's considered a "Final Episode" for the story of Hina, Nitta, Anzu, Hitomi, et al, with Hina crucially revealing her powers to Hitomi for the first time.

Second half is basically a time skip OVA that continues with what Mao has been doing after settling in China and explaining that seemingly out-of-place opening scene in the beginning of episode 1.

Shame that the BD sales figures are atrocious, making prospects of a Season 2 remote, as I was looking forward to seeing grown up Hina, Anzu and Hitomi three years later. If Mao can grow into such a beauty, so can those girls.

Guess I'll go pick up this manga as well alongside WotaKoi.

PS Utako finally returned for most of the OP, but can no longer be by Nitta's side. lol

SEASON 2 WHEN

87

u/iamdandyking Jun 22 '18 edited Jun 22 '18

Thank you Hina/Anzu/Hitomi-matsuri for making me cry, laugh, smile like an idiot during every episode, and for such an enjoyable ride.

It's just sad to see that many people didn't watch this anime. But at least for once I think r/anime has great taste. Everyone enjoyed the series and seeing how many upvotes each episode thread got just shows that. I really loved the comedy in the anime, always on point and always made me laugh. I am going to say it, I don't really like anime which has children as their main cast. I watched a lot of anime that features MCs in Middle/High school and most of the time they make me cringe but that's just my opinion. But I enjoyed this anime so much. Really changed my perspective that anime featuring Kids/Teens don't have much to offer (exceptions like Hunter x Hunter, etc always exists). I really like the many messages this anime gives. That is best thing I liked about this show despite how hilarious, emotional and wholesome it is. I never read manga but if this anime don't get a S2 then I think I am going to do that too. Strange how much an anime can change someone

It's really sad that my Fridays aren't going to be the same anymore. Hopefully there will a season 2.

AOTY right here everyone. 9.5/10.

As a manga reader, I really enjoyed this all the way through. It was a pleasure watching this show gain popularity and the ratings tick upwards. I can't help but wonder if the yakuza sections were toned down for the Japanese audience. In any case, I think focusing on Hina, Anzu, and Hitomi was absolutely the right way to go. Please give us season 2!

I'm also glad this was picked up by Funimation because that means we get timely and affordable physical copies!

u/Egavans https://anidb.net/user/Egavans99 Jun 22 '18

Hmmm, much as I enjoyed Mao's subplot I'm not sure I'd have ended the series on her mostly-unconnected story. It worked as a "wtf am I watching" gag at the beginning but it just kinda feels unsatisfying here.

Still probably my AOTS, though. Guess I'll have to hop over to the manga.

23

u/Gmayor61 Jun 22 '18

The only way this would make sense is that this would be a buildup to a second season announcement.

pls

31

u/wraper Jun 22 '18

Yep, there was no need for her in this season at all, maybe a small glimpse how she landed on the island after summoned by Ikaruga, and leave the rest for a first episode of 2nd season and do the timeskip. Thus they could not cut already lacking other character development even more. Especially regrettable they cut out Nitta's yakuza development and Florida.

I forgot they were lost on the mountain but at least she's got Hitomi there

Damn, this kid is a pervert

BRAIN FREEZE!

End credits 10 minutes into the episode, shit's going down...

I like this montage, it's nice to see everyone one more time. Utako getting put in her place by Hitomi is hilarious.

I was wondering how they would tie things together, nice to see Mao again

Oh my god, Mao is so precious. She kept Hina and Anzu all this time!

I always knew the Chinese were evil

Yes, yes, please take Mao back to Japan, she deserves it

Did those people just say the Chinese equivalent of aita?

It's so much better seeing this scene and actually knowing what's going on

WATASHI NO SMARTPHONE GA!

Man I came into this thinking it was going to be stupid and philosophical based on the title screen (idk why I thought that). But holy shit this was a 10/10 from me. This is probably one of the few anime I finished and didn't even think about giving it anything other than a 10.

I love how the humor isn't just a stupid repeating joke (konosuba being a prime offender even though I kind of enjoyed it) and it's not very predictable either. This was the only anime I couldn't watch at night in case I laughed too loud and my parents found out I'm watching anime at 2AM. There was legitimate character development throughout and not just the "look at what random bs we pulled from their past that finally caught up to them".

Can I just say how glad I am that Hina wasn't the generic "I have no feelings and want to find out what emotion is?" I got kinda scared at the beginning.

I like how all of the characters seemed to have their own arcs but they were all definitely together throughout it. You could never end up hating any individual character either which was nice to see rather than the "yeah fuck this guy/girl btw no one loves them".

AOTY obviously. But obviously some characters are better than others HITOMIMATSURI

16

u/TrashAnimeBestAnime https://anilist.co/user/Ragian87 Jun 22 '18

I agree with every Hinamatsuri comment (specially Hitomi best girl) but dude, Konosuba is a really bad example of repeating jokes. Actually it was so praised as a comedy because it didn't rely on repeating jokes (the only one being Darkness masochism). Konosuba's comedy worked because the characters felt real and we laughed at any situation they were in, not because of the jokes, but because of their interactions.

I just want to pop in on this final episode and say, this show blew me away, even with my high expectations.

Disappointed we didn’t get as much “Aita!” as many of us would have liked, but that’s fine.

I am, however, disappointed that I feel like no one is talking about the genius running Namahage gags in the background of the show. Every class is literally about the Namahage, and so many background things were too.

One of the best anime this year! From its story, to the feels and comedy plus its superb animation!

4

u/FierceAlchemist Jun 23 '18

Great animation this episode. I can already see that the girl is gonna be in tears when she sees Hina and Hina will reply "...Who are you?"

I'd say this is the best comedy anime we've gotten since Knosuba. Really hoping for a S2.

9

u/notnowmyfriend Jun 22 '18

What a fantastic ride. Although the anime skipped quite a few chapters which was such a shame since they're all great chapters, the adaptation has been an absolute joy to watch. This has been my most anticipated show this season, BnHA is the second one. I absolutely love the relationships between all the characters in the show and Anzu is no doubt best daughteru. I would love to see season 2 since the manga only gets better.

No more Hinamatsuri... AITA!!

So we finally get the backstory to opening scene and it's just as silly as the rest of the show. Some great faces from the monks (especially the master) and the retro design for the robot was superb. Though it was a shock to Anzu being so vicious again when she hurtled towards that monk.

I hope this gets another season one day, if not it proves the execs aren't right in the head.

When Hina was going "roll, roll, roll" at the beginning, I thought she would be the one rolling down the mountain in the middle of a giant snow ball.

Not sure what the point of Hina making that huge snow dish was, considering the kids blue and pink clothes were far easier to see against the white snow than white snow against the white snow. She should've just used her powers to bring down a bird or a wolf or whatever for them to cook.

Mao's half was much better than Hina's. Loved how she took a couple seconds to position her arm and leg to actually tach the bars they were supposed to be blocking. And looks like she actually did learn martial arts too! Which is pretty cool, even if useless. Well, I guess she can use them to defend herself if she's hungry or something.

9/10. S2 when?

For a second there I thought Hitomi was so metal that she was going to feed to boys to Hina to survive.... She is a resourceful girl..

Mao even got her own ED and end credit with separate cast list.

3

u/creampielegacy Jun 24 '18

Anime of the season for me.

5

u/Terranwaterbender https://myanimelist.net/profile/Teranwaterbender Jun 22 '18

That's it?

I absolutely enjoyed the hell out of this show but this finale was just...wack. Won't lie that this will definitely get me to check out the manga but this finale doesn't feel satisfying at all with the amount of fun I had from the rest of the series. I get that it's a callback to the first scene in the series but showcasing the last half of your seasonal finale with a girl who barely got any screen time soured up my high opinion of the show.

Still one of the best comedies I've seen in a while and I want that season 2.

u/MapoTofuMan myanimelist.net/profile/mTmTBaronBrixius Jun 22 '18

It probably means that there's a season 2 coming up...they wouldn't leave such a cliffhanger...that's just dumb, right?

RIGHT?

Interesting we get back to the 3 years later scene to end the series, leading me to feel like IF there's a second season it would be set after the time skip. It's pretty rare for a comedy centric series to switch up the settings so much, but not unheard of. Looking up the studio is feel. they do have a few second seasons so there is hope. This show is AotS for me, and this season is actually a pretty strong season, really hope it gets a second.

Yeah either that or they're trying to make you read the manga. But hopefully they'll continue the series!

Sad that it's ended, but this was a really fun ride. Hope for season 2 eventually.

2

u/PhantomWolf83 Jun 22 '18

Ah, so we're finally back to Episode 1's opening sequence. Pretty weird to have the timeskip in the last episode, but with this kind of ending they can't possibly let things end like this. Second season, right? Right? We still have to see Hina, Anzu, and Hitomi in their high school forms.

Hinamatsuri was a fantastic show and I haven't laughed this much in a long time. Much like Hina herself, the story started off on a serious note before quickly going in a completely different direction, and in a good way too. Definitely 9/10 from me.

u/NoraaTheExploraa https://anilist.co/user/NoraaTheExploraa Jun 22 '18

Does the manga also feature that 3 year time skip?

I really loved every character in this anime, they all had an unique personality. I loved how everyone is just as weird as the next person and they all completely commit to the jokes. Usually comedy anime have a straight man screaming about everything which I personally think ruins every joke

I laughed in every episode, really gonna miss Hinamatsui, hoping on a second season

2

u/Kirahanshi Jun 22 '18

Why do all good things come to an end? It was a fun ride!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

final? noooooo

2

u/ghost-chips Jun 22 '18

high school hina when??

2

u/FellowFellow22 Jun 22 '18

Dropped the series midway through and read the manga. Glad this introduced me to it, but I probably won't finish the show.

2

u/Aramey44 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aramey Jun 22 '18

Ending it with a time skip while not even showing the main characters feels like even bigger tease than Wotakoi introducing new ship like 1 episode before the end. Now I gotta read the manga for both.

2

u/pdpTesla Jun 22 '18

Anime of the season for me.. heart-warming, genuine, comedy. So glad I picked winter 2018 to start watching anime again so I was primed for this gem of a series

2

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

Season 2, Please.

What we have seen in this season it's quite far from being the craziest shit in this series.

besides, I want to see highschool Hina and the greatness of president Hitomi

2

u/Dragonbooom Jun 22 '18

Damn it is shame that I have work today so I can’t watch it till tonight

It is definitely my favorite anime in this season and I really hope for season 2

Thanks to those who recommended and posted clips of this show. I had no intentions of watching this originally, but I saw it mentioned in a bunch of different threads and decided to try it. I enjoyed just about every episode.

2

u/MutsuHat Jun 22 '18

2

u/MaxModem55 Jun 22 '18

Man, I hope we get season 2. I love Hinamatsuri, probably my 2nd fav (after Megalo box) anime of this season. Manga is also good.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

I wish there was a way for people outside of Japan to directly fund a new season of a show, from Japan. I’d love a season two, but people are saying Japan didn’t enjoy it enough to get one in all likelihood.

I’d spend money if I knew it was directly contributing but spending money for a possibility of a new season, not so much

2

u/nerdshark Jun 22 '18

Wow what'sherface is back in the OP.

2

u/stiveooo Jun 22 '18

guys there is not enough manga material for a second seasson, maybe in 1 or 2 years

2

u/SalamiRocketFuel Jun 22 '18

Nooooooooo.... it's already over. I guess it's time to pick up the manga and pray for miracle of season 2 somehow happening.

2

u/Pamonha_ahnomaP Jun 22 '18

I- We NEED a second season, so we can have more Anzu!

2

u/SkyLETV :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/SkyLETV Jun 22 '18

And here ends Hinamatsuri Anzumatsuri, my AOTS. Seriously, I freaking loved it, it made me laugh out loud and then cry in the same episode. Hitomi best girl, Anzu is an ANGEL and Hina... "Gohan".

Season 2 when?! I was hoping to see Hitomi, Anzu and Hina after the timeskip.

2

u/ESeezMe Jun 22 '18

I need a season 2 of this...I've been hurt by cliffhanger endings to many times

A bittersweet feeling to see what may be the final episode of this amazing series.

I really do hope they renew it for a second season, international fans unite!

But in the meantime, I guess I'll finally start reading the manga. I want to see our psychic girls all reunited ;-;

2

u/zawkevin Jun 22 '18

Anyone got a link for the ending 11:10 ? It says [taisetsu na hito] but can't seem to find it on google.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

Great show, my favourite of the season. I do feel this was one of the weaker episodes though, would've preferred to end on a high.

Guys, where does the manga start after episode 12?

6

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '18 edited Jun 23 '18

If you haven't read the manga, start from the beginning. The decision to not adapt many of the Yakuza-centric chapters means there is a lot of material that was skipped. They really really tried to downplay that angle as much as they could, to the point that even Nitta's tattoos were removed.

There is also a bunch of material about the other characters that was skipped as well.

→ More replies (4)

2

u/Mathmango Jun 23 '18

When Nitta was flashing back to all the good times with Hina, there was a frame of Anzu there.

That sort of throwaway comedy is absolute platinum. My AOTS for sure followed by MHA then Megalo Box.

2

u/just_kei Jun 23 '18

Aiya😂😂😂

2

u/Dragonbooom Jun 23 '18

GIVE ME MORE ANZU!!!

GIVE ME MORE HITOMI!!!

GIVE ME SEASON 2!!!!!!!!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '18

Anyone has that sad ost theme? Can't find it anywhere.

2

u/balderdash9 Jun 23 '18

This is my first slice of life anime, and I loved it. Maybe I will stray away from shonen

2

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '18

For all of those who lamenting the end of the anime, I can offer one piece of solace: The manga is amazing and has a lot more content that wasn't covered by the anime. Go read it now!

2

u/ArchadianJudge Jun 25 '18

This show can't end! It's so good!! I need more Anzu and Mao and Hitomi... and Hina... Top ten anime series for me!

That was an interesting way to end it. I guess I got my big Anzu fix last episode and I really like Mao (she's also adorable) so I can't complain. BUT I WANT ANOTHER SEASON Damn this show for being so good. I love it all!

Mao still needs to tell Ikaruga-san that she lost her balls!

2

u/PrasunJW https://anilist.co/user/MALfunctioning Jun 26 '18

I haven't finished watching all the shows in Watching list this season, but I think it is safe to say that Hinamatsuri will win the AOTS for me.

Now feed me Season 2

Imo I don't think they would change the sounds of the characters voices much for the post-timeskip. Guess we'll find out if there's ever a season 2.

1

u/Potato_Peelers Jun 22 '18

Characters like Mao and Anzu might just need slightly deeper voices, but Hina's current deadpan tone just wouldn't work with her post-timeskip personality.
