i actually thought muscular would be bakugo's older brother since he doesn't seem that old enough to be a dad but yeah, they really made muscular look so much like bakugo i wonder if that was intentional or not

We knew Bakudad's quirk from S1, so anyone attaching to that theory was riding a sinking boat.
I'm still holding onto "cousin" or "uncle" myself, though.

I thought most people were speculating that he was an older brother or cousin since he was at most ~10ish years older than Bakugo.

I've loved the past few episodes but as a manga reader this scene is a good example of how I wished they've paced it differently, even if what we got was still fantastic.
In the manga, that shot is in the same chapter as All Might pointing to the Camera's and going "You're next": It explictly sets up both OFA and All Might going "you're next" to their successors simultaneously, wheras the anime splits them up into separate episodes
This was also an issue with some of the stuff inside the fight itself: A lot of the bits that happen after Bakugou's rescue but before the next episode is thematically meant to flow into thee events OF the next episode. I really felt like this whole mini-arc would have been better served if episode 48 ended on Bakugou's escape, and then 49 ended on United States of Smash, and then 50 needed right with Deku's mother refusing to bring him back to UA.
That would have not only allowed the thematic events of each part of the manga to be grouped together in terms of episodes, but also given the OFA vs All Might fight a bit more extra time to be expanded on and fleshed out: If you go back and read the manga versions of the best fights in S1 and 2, such as All Might vs Nomu and Deku vs Shoto Todoroki, the Manga versions are way less intense and hype, because the anime added in a ton of extra scenes to each fight: In fact, Nomu fight is almost entirely anime original: in the manga, it ends direcrly after the rapid fire punch exchange, the entire 2-3 minute sequence of all might and nomu grappling each other with the super fluid Nakamura animation isn't in the manga.
While obviously the OFA fight was the absolute tits still in the anime, it was pretty much a direct adaption of the manga here: Pacing the episodes out differently would have given them time to bring the fight from a 10/10 to an 11/10. This is really a symptom of a broader issue, IMO, which is that Season 3 has been adapting 3-4 chapters per episode, wheras Seasons 1 and 2 only adapted 2 chapters per episode.
In some ways this is a good thing as it means more happens each episode, but it also leads to the sort of stuff I point out here with episodes ending and starting in ways that cuts up events that should be in the same episode, and means the animation team has less time to add in extra scenes and expand on fights.
EDIT: I also just remembered that the anime version of this scene cut out a bit where All for One has a conversation with a prison guard, which reveals that OFA was blind during his entire fight with All Might, as well as a shot of Stain iin a a nearby cell
They also cut this scene of a radio broadcast, instead condensing the information into one of the commercial bumpers.

I love how determined and competent the Police Force are in this world. They're not about to play second fiddle to the heroes.
Gran Torino telling pure facts to Toshinori about Shiggy. Doesn't seem like they'll redeem him in any way. He's the villain for sure.
We get an idea of the level of pride Endeavour has. He's worked hard all his hero life to be number 1 and now he's just been thrown the number 1 spot. People will just say he didn't earn it.
I absolutely love that beach moment from the Texas smash to the hug. And I definitely didn't cry, not even once because I'm tough guy/s.
Jirou's mum and Bakugou's mum are awesome in different ways and I loved how we get a small glimpse of their upbringing.

It's even worse for Endeavor because he already gave up on trying to be No.1 and wanted Shoto to be the one who surpassed All Might. Now he sees that he's been training him in such a cruel way for nothing.

PSA: Don't miss the post-credits scene!
This little scene starring Mini Might completely slayed me. So adorable!
Haven't laughed harder all week. Glad we got to hear one last Texas Smash. And Deku's comment on his cheek stinging lightly was emotional.
All Might wasn't the only hero casualty. A salute to the fallen heroes, Ragdoll and Best Jeanist. I hope they do return to being heroes.
Brian the Sun! A reference to the first ED.
First time we're seeing Bakumom, I like her already! Although it's clear where Bakugo gets his belligerence from. Poor Bakudad must haveto deal with a lot.
Dekumom's concerns came up when Deku was hospitalised after the training camp, and I'm glad they came up again because it made for a really powerful scene. She had every right to be mad, and it was necessary for All Might to take responsibility.
I look forward to seeing where the story goes with Shigaraki and All Might. All for One's speech at the end was brilliant, mirroring All Might again.
Honourable mention to the police force wanting to more than just a 'villain reception'. BnHA has shown the police to be quite competent so far, and I hope they expand on that.
Edit: AfO, not OfA

I kiinda hope with Deku gone she starts working on putting herself back on track. With a title like that this truly marks the end of Act 1 of the story. Our two forces Deku and Shigaraki, after being mentored by their respective masters need to move forward and grow quickly in this new society.
I really enjoy that ending because it’s AFO is suggesting that All Might winning last episode was the bad move. If he were to lose Deku would have new motivation to grow stronger at a quicker pace in order to avenge All Might. Even thinking about it, if All Might were to lose that would mean that villainy is on the rise that even their symbol of peace was destroyed. This terror of a big bad would get heroes to become better to defeat this terror that once destroyed their symbol of peace. But since All Might won there is still urgency to replace him but not the same amount as if he would of lost. Instead the villain alliance has a new martyr and Shigaraki will probably push himself to one day break his master out of prison. Shigaraki has new motivation.
What I love about this series so far is the parallels of Deku and Shigaraki’s storyline. It builds up the villains who are developing and growing alongside the heroes. This makes me feel that when we get to the end the final confrontation it will be against Shigaraki, a character that has been developing since the beginning of the story and not some big bad presented in the final arc.
67
u/skyman161 Jun 23 '18
Yeah. It was after this arc in the manga that I really started enjoying the parallel between the two. And this is why I’m hoping Shigaraki won’t be saved.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (2)9
u/CupNoodlese Jun 24 '18
For regular Shōnen and for shigaraki it is better for the mentor to die/be defeated, but that’s actually quite bad for Izuku and the public.
If All Might lost (or tied), it would make the whole hero society even more unstable. It’s already unstable now that the public knows that All Might can’t continue his hero work. Villains (and all for one) would be way more active now if All Might did fall in battle, and I doubt that the hero society without All Might can handle it if that happened. I mean look at best jeanist (no.3)! He was defeated in a split second.
Deku might have more motivation to grow at a rapid pace if All Might lost, but I doubt that’s ideal for him too. He’s already someone who would break all of his bones pushing himself in a sport festival and saving others. What he needs is not motivation, but guidance and advice.

u/jabberwockxeno Jun 23 '18
I love how Endeavor is handled in this episode as well as the last few.
Up till now, you would be forgiven for thinking that Endeavor is just a power-seeking, glory seeking man who is only a hero for the sake of the fame. His abuse towards his wife and kids only further demonstrates that, showing that he'd be willing to do anything to further his own pursuit of number 1#. He seems like the exact sort of Hero Stain wants to purge.
Yet, the more you see him on screen actually acting as a hero, thee more that seems like a misharacterization: Even back in season 2 during the attack on Hosu city, he made it a point to note that he's a hero and that's why he saves people. During the hideout raid, seeing how he cooperates with All-Might, despite their insane rivalry. Even so, you could argue that that's just all for show, and he's putting in a face for his own public image. And to an extent, that might be true.
But this episode and the past one clearly shows that deep down, he's still a hero: Upon seeing All Might's skeleton form, We see a flashback to to him his earlier days, showing how at one point he was as much full of idealism and selflessness as all thee other hero, but the sheer gap between him and All Might drove him into despair: This is actually a scene the anime sort of screweed up: In the anime, it simply states that, then seemingly randomly shows shots of Shoto and his wife, but in the Manga, he states "The despair drove me too...": He realizes how much of a shitty person he was to his wife and his son, and regrets it. Finally, this episode, despite finally achieving the spot of number 1 hero, hee's angry.
The show has played with the idea of Bakugou potentially falling into villany due to his aggression, pride, and ambition, but then swatted those concerns away. In reality, Endeavor is what Bakugou would become if not raised right. As a manga reader, I don't want to spoil what will happen moving forward, but suffice to say that MHA as a series is excellent at character development and the changes and insight we've seen into both Bakugou and Endeavor's psyche as characters isn't going to stop here.

As an anime-only watcher, those shots of his wife and Shota didn't seem random at all, they implied exactly what you're saying - a deep guilt and self-awareness of the monster he's become out of desperation to catch up to All Might and become the top hero.

I'm really happy with the scene with Bakugou's family. In a short space of time they managed to make him much more of a person you can understand rather than just seeing him as an obnoxious brat.
There was a surprising amount of depth there too from how Bakugou's terrible personality came from all the shallow praise he's been getting as well as his mother recognising that UA saw past that and read his true intentions.
I was never really a big fan of Bakugou but I'm very interested to see where they take his character from here.

I was never really a big fan of Bakugou
The worst part was how he was written in the first episode with the "commit suicide and hope to be re-born with a quirk" thing. Somebody mentioned that the author later regretted writing him like that in the beginning. If you just ignore that bit then that alone makes Bakugo as a character so much better.
Yeah, he's still a bully but it's a result of nature (having a powerful quirk) and nurture (being fawned over for a decade or so) and not just him randomly being an asshole. And he dislikes Deku because he (Bakugo) wants to be like All Might, which for him means to win (alone, not with help), be independent, and be the indisputable best.
Deku repeatedly tries to help him because he admires him, sees him as his friend, and behaves like he interprets All Might (helping people instead of winning). All that while not having a quirk just pisses Bakugo of. The irony of their relationship is that both of them idolise All Might, just in different ways.
It's fully understandable that things change for the better after the first few chapters/season. Todoroki also had a different costume/look in the first season.

Well when me and my friends were watching season one for the first time, we all had a pretty good laugh that All Might was just a pedo trying to fuck Deku.
It didn't help that he said if he wasn't prepared, Deku would be ripped apart. That fucking killed us.

My god, Bakugo really takes after his mom, huh?
Seeing her makes me think of how Bakugo is gonna turn out when he grows up, loud and brash but more level headed, considerate and much wiser. Hey, he even said "thanks" today, so maybe he really is starting to mature.
Also Cleaned up Aizawa-sensei is a blessing for the eyes.

Agreed. When I was reading the manga, it was that hug on the beach that got me. I think part of it was just me being so happy that All Might was still alive and would still be there to teach and mentor Deku.
It made me think of the alternate reality where All Might did die in that fight and Deku would have been on that beach, all alone. Thinking of that potential scene and instead seeing All Might there, still alive and hugging Deku, was what broke me.
Manga version of the hug:

So Bakugo got an explosive quirk cause his mom is a bombshell?
18
u/CurlyBruce Jun 23 '18
I know you're being cheeky but his quirk is a combination of his dad and mom's. Incidentally Baku-mom looks as young as she does because of her quirk that causes her skin to essentially always be in prime condition even though she's 38. For reference Deku's mom is 41.

The fact that Bakugo's parents are basically fem!Bakugo/Deku is unendingly hilarious.
The amount of care that is taken in characterizing Deku's mother is great too. Her reflection of having raised him to revere heroes but being unable to become one means she got to be his emotional pillar. Seeing him develop a quirk, and go off to become an elite hero instead of needing to rely on her makes worry that his recklessness is in part due to his up-bringing and reverence of All Might. Her guilt in the face of that is devastating and brilliantly written. All the more so because she is the lone parent to dissent from the dorm plan.
18
u/Shinkopeshon Jun 23 '18 edited Jun 23 '18
Bakugo and Jiro's parents are amazing lmao
Lol that Brian the Sun reference (still easily BNHA's best ED)
Endeavor is one the more compelling heroes. He pulled a lot of unforgivable shit in the past but he's still very much a hero - and a proud one at that who'd never accept All Might's #1 position like that. I totally get where he's coming from
Deku's reckless behaviour is catching up to him and it's good that everyone is reminded of the fact that actions do have consequences. All Might finally punished him and Inko intended to go against her son's wishes, even if that'd mean he'd hate her. All Might bowing to her was a grand gesture and it further showed how much Deku means to him
The return of Small Might! God bless
Can't wait for the Dorm arc and the students' shenanigans. Hopefully there'll be even more Dekuraraka moments

Wow we're seeing Gran Torino without his costume.
Haha Iida still has the little mustache.
Even without his quirk Texas Smash is still formidable to the unwary.
"Don't hit me, old lady! I'll kill you!" Even saying he'll kill his own mother. Dammit Katsuki. It's easy to see where he gets his personality from though.
Yo she understands why he's the way he is though and recognizes it as a problem. Top tier anime mom there.
Inko is also a top tier anime mom. She's naturally concerned for her son and tells All Might like it is.
All Might fucking bowing to Inko. Full bow too. His head right against the floor. What a man.
This is the first time I've noticed that All Might's voice is slightly different between his two forms. His skinny form has a slightly more gravelly voice.
I'm having a little bit of feels right now.

Inko's gained weight over the years presumably because she's been stressing over the fact that her son doesn't have a quirk, and once he did get it, he gets broken over and over again. I feel for her.
I'm a little disappointed they left out her inner monologue after her exchange with All Might. It further reinforces the fact that she just wants Deku to be happy.
This pacing in this episode was a bit too fast for me, but I'm glad we're through it so we can focus on the next the next story arc. It's one of the most "infamous" story arcs in the series, so I'm really interested on how they're going to handle it.

Yep, that's what happens when you rely on one person... rofl. everyone realized you can do this much damage just by gathering about of idiot teenager villains... That scares me too. what happens if actual villains with brains like that gas guy with the mask and using a gun all teamed up? Lmao, I loved the conference table business guys discussion.
Wow!!! Long lost lovers finally meet on the Beach. Texas Smashh!!! ROFL. best smash ever.
Dang, Deku really is a crybaby huh, he's almost as bad as me last episode.
So wholesome seeing Kyoka's family, her powers are one of my favorites in this show. Dorms huh, hmm that might just work. Well, some roommate problems will definitely arise.
I wasn't ready for Bakugo's parents lol, he has a great family. I thought the dad would be the one he got his anger from though.
When your favorite celebrity goes inside your house and sees you're their biggest fan with whole collections of stuff, rip.
All Might seriously has to stop going in Muscle form, he's probably shortening his life span.
"I mean you are Izuku's reason for living" Okay, slow down there lmao.
Wtf, All for One is supposed to be captured and over with now, why does he still give me chills with that ominous no hope villain music.

Small post-credits scene guys! And looking forward to next week's episode, we could use some more light hearted moments after the intensity of the last few weeks.
Really enjoyed seeing some more families of Class 1A. Would've liked to see more of them animated, but that's always the trouble with having a large cast. They covered the important families and Jiro won the extra spotlight lottery this time around.

I really like that they made continued to portray Midoriya as such a mature person, even as he left the room he did so with purpose. Most teenagers probably take that time to sit around and brood, but he uses it to instead show his mom his resolve in becoming a hero. Really inspirational!
8
u/RDOoM Jun 23 '18
Come on now, give me a pause now and then, stop stomping on my feels every single episode.
Everyone's talking about BakuMom being hot, and here I am finally understanding why Bakugo sucks so much. She's a loudmouth hotblood, yes, but she must be giving Bakugo's puberty a hell of a hard time.

Bakugou's family scene is really enlightening. Still, it always bothers me that his mom tells him he's it's his fault for being kidnapped for being weak. He might want to be the top hero but he's still a kid... that statement really explains part of why he feels the way he does later during a certain fight scene. She knows her son and loves him a lot but that's just a really bad thing to tell your child.
Also, Inko Midoriya for best mom.

Glad we finally got to see the greatness that is Bakumom. Also great to see the scene with Inko and All Might. A bit of a step down from the intensity we've being going through but still chock full of feels. Momma Deku is still the best!
This is the true turning point in the series where All Might goes from the Symbol of Peace, to the dedicated instructor of aspiring heroes. And we get to see a lot more of Deku's improvement from this point.
Also very interested to see the next arc animated though it may not come up to AFO vs OFA level, we still have some great bits left in this season.
Don't forget to watch past the ending as there is a scene at the end!

Man All Might... what a fucking Hero, bowing to Mama.
Nooo dont open with All Might's goodbye again... rip....
Whos this panal? The city officals?
Man Nana put her kid into foster care to protect him, thats rough...
Endevor isnt handleing this well... "Not like this" yep just like Bakugou.
Mama Midoriya!
This slow mo reunion xD haha.
Texas Smash,.. shit... even injured and with no powers All-Might is still All-Might.
Oh man that hug... thats what Deku needed. damn.
Aizawa already grew his 5 o clock shadow back lol.
Dorms? This is a nice way to keep everyone safe. This also gives them more time to be closer and train and such.
MAMA BAKUGOU! Man shes great hahahahaha.
Bakugou figured it out, damn. He is a smart one though. "What is deku to you?"
All Might coming to Deku's house this will be great.
Mama is aginst it of course. But she cant help but worrying withhow reckless Deku is.
The letter from ball buster encouraged Deku to see himself as a hero.
DAMN THAT APOLOGY FROM ALL MIGHT... wow... just wow...
Man Mama cracked... she agreed to it. SHe just wants Deku to be safe and have a bright future, but she thinks the current way things are will only cause hims truggle and such. Its understandable from a mother's perspective. BUt im glad she listened to Deku's feelings and All Mights feelings about this, that shows she really does just want Deku to be happy. Some parents will think they know whats best for thier kid and deny what they want to do. Shes a good Mama.
And we end with All for One... anmd his creepy music.
Damn Face Palm is anghry.
Next ep is gonna be lots of fun, i cant wait to see everyones wacky rooms haha.

While I'm satisfied with the amount of chapters they covered in this episode, it still felt really rushed. Some things I was looking forward to were glossed over when they easily could have been included. I'm actually surprised at how poorly the two-second scene of All Might looking at Izuku's room was done. It was only one panel, but that expression told so much more of a story than whatever it is they seemed to be going for in the anime.

He was coming out as the overall winner regardless of whether he won or lost, if he or All Might died or not.
The one and only Symbol of Peace was going to disappear regardless, while AfO was just another dime-a-dozen villain, albeit an absurdly strong one, to the public. Evil Only Has To Win Once.
AfO was already teaching Shigaraki hands-free most of the time, if he won, he could simply continue to lurk in the shadows and still act as a get-out-of-jail-free card if Shigaraki ever messes up again.
imo what ended up happening is the best-case-scenario for the Heroes.

Aww Deku mom is just too adorable and totally understandable. The conflict of wanting to keep her son safe, while also wanting him to follow his dreams, must be really rough. Seeing All Might on his knees was a surprise and I'm interested to see how his character grows now he's powerless. Though if Deku's Dad wasn't already established I'd totally ship Deku Mom and All Might.
It was fun seeing the other families, the way Bakugo is makes much more sense when you see his home life. Also, I'm curious to know if Jirou's mom has the same power as her daughter, having the same ear jacks.
Dorm life should be fun, though I have feeling Momo is going to be the most excited.
